The center of mining at the Homestake gold mine in Lead, SD, is moving deeper every year. As a result, it has become necessary to upgrade the ventilation system. This paper describes the first phase of a scheduled two-phase upgrade - installation of a 2.2-MW (3000-hp) centrifugal fan. The higher pressure fan is required to route larger airflows into the deeper production levels. Selection of the fan began by specifying the necessary operating point to provide these larger airflows. Special site work had to be done on the surface to accommodate the new fan structure as well as underground to reroute airflows.

Future Florida phosphate reserves contain higher MgO than presently mined deposits. The high MgO content is contributed by dolomite and Mg-rich clay, palygorskite. Selective flocculation was attempted to reduce the MgO content of apatite in synthetic mixtures of apatite with dolomite and palygorskie. Mixed mineral selectivity was predicted in the apatite-dolomite and apatite- palygorskite systems with Poly(ethy1ene oxide) (PEO) flocculant. Loss of selectivity in the mixed mineral systems was primarily attributed to heteroflocculation, which was minimized by addition of a Site Blocking Agent (SBA), a lower molecular weight fraction of PEO, prior to addition of the flocculant. A 80:20 mixture of apatite-dolomite (or palygorskite) was upgraded as 95% apatite at more than 80% recovery level in the product fraction.

Twenty-six in situ analyses of cubic galena crystals from a Mississippi Valley-type deposit were undertaken with a laser microprobe emission spectrograph to study the variation of nine trace elements from the crystal center to its periphery, both along the diagonal and vertical. The general trend is an outward increase in the concentrations of Ag, Ga, Ge and In, with As showing the opposite trend. Bi, Cd and Sn showed no discernable trends. Sb was not detected. These variation patterns may serve as a model for similar studies of other Mississippi Valley-type deposits.

The state of the art in crawler transporters for loads to 3 kt (3300 st) is sufficiently advanced to allow compilation of job cost figures showing the economics of tracked vehicle use under a wide variety of circumstances. Initial costs, cost per ton of capacity, and operational and maintenance expenses are presented. Data is derived from participation by the Neil F. Lampson Co. in more than 3 Mt - km (2.05 million st - mile) of crawler operation during the past 16 years. The effects of economics on future design trends will be examined with particular reference to versatility, portability, and capacity.

By the middle of 1989 Inco will have applied its patented cyanide removal technology to seventeen commercial operations. Removal of cyanide from CIL slurry tailings is applied at Equity Silver and Inco's new 1.200 mtpd mill at Inco/Golden Knight. Detoxification of CIP tailings is carried out by Colosseum California (3.600 mtpd), Canamax's Ketza River (360 mtpd) and Westmin's Silbak Premier (2000 tpd) operations. Repulped tailings from Merrill-Crowe flowsheets are treated at Total Erikson's Mount Skukum (300 mtpd) and Skyline's Johnny Mountain (200 mtpd) mills and barren bleed at Inco/Queenston's McBean mill (500 mtpd). Lynngold's MacLellan mill (1800 mtpd) and ERG (40.000 mtpd) treat pond supernatant water. Plating shop cyanide effluents are decyanized at Kuntz Electroplating and two other plating shops in Ontario. Details regarding some of the above operations are given. Operating and capital cost estimates for various treatment options are discussed.

Contract mining has a definite place in the mining industry, both in the United States and around the world. A mine owner should evaluate the utilization of contract mining in the devel­opment and production of mining properties. This evaluation of contract mining should be performed at various times in the life of a mining prope1iy from the development and initial operation of a new mining project, periodically throughout the mine's life, and at mine closure. Many factors must be considered in ana­lyzing and evaluating the potential of contract mining and those factors are both quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative factors are those factors for which costs or measures can be determined or estimated objectively; and qualitative factors are those factors for which costs or measures must be determined subjectively and do not lend themselves to objective determination or estimation. Some of the qualitative aspects may provide only yes, maybe, or no answers while others will provide a tendency or partiality toward one answer or the other without a quantified cost. The major quantitative aspects include operating and capital costs, monitoring costs, capital preservation, acquisition and disposal of new and used equipment, direct payroll and administrative costs, recruiting and training costs, and employment and termi­nation of staff and hourly personnel. The major qualitative areas include corporate philosophy, risks associated with capital and operating costs, financing the project, operating control, operat­ing flexibility, recruiting and training of personnel, employment and termination, administrative concerns, and owner/contractor relationship.

The Klondike symbolized one of mankind's driving forces - the desire to lay one's hands on a scarce resource, gold, in that case - and in doing so to make some money along the way. It can be argued that construction aggregates - a once lowly and ignored sector of the natural resource industries - have become the desired targets of their own "Klondike." This began in the 1970s and accelerated to a frantic pace in the 1980s. The scope of industrial minerals is very wide. It ranges from high value minerals such as talc, bentonite and kaolinite to the truly humble minerals of sands and gravels, limestones and granites. Their major end uses are in construction aggregates. A rich variety of different mineral types all make good construction aggregates. However, those successfully used have two fundamentals in common: • Their technical characteristics are appropriate for the requirements of their end use. • They are located within an economic distance from the market. The North American market This is the largest construction ag¬gregate market in the world. Consumption in 1990 reached 2.2 Gt/a(2.5 billion stpy). This rate of consumption has grown steadily over the past decades. In the United States, from 1963 to 1989, it averaged a 1.6% compound growth rate. Within this long-term trend, there are business cycles, because aggregate demand is closely linked to economic strength or weakness. The North American market also displays the greatest per capita demand for aggregates when compared to the major industrial economies (Table 1).

Welcome to Chicago and to the first North American Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference. It is a great privilege for me to serve as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of such a Conference. We are here because of the rapidly mounting interest of technicians the world over in turning the potential use of underground space into sensible and economical benefits to people. This Conference certainly provides a major forum of international importance and scope for the exchange and dissemination of up-to-date knowledge on the technology of underground excavation and tunneling. The discussions will also surely delineate the immediate and longterm challenges we must approach in multidisciplinary force. We must exercise leadership in the problems we are trying to solve. Your program shows the breadth of the technical discussions which are going to be underway here during the three days of this Conference. I am not going into technical aspects or detailed discussions of the many uses to which underground space may be devoted. I also will leave to the technical meetings the outline of the state of the art. But I do want to tell you of the progress being made in channeling the expertise of many of the world's foremost authorities on rapid excavation and tunneling to consider the problems, laying the ground work for needed research, and provide the leadership in converting unused subsurface potentials to improve the quality of life. On reflection of certain overall circumstances which have pervaded the gold mining industry, it appears useful to point out some specifics which the writer hopes will improve the potential for success in the application of hydraulic dredges to gold mining activity. I will, prior to entering into that discussion, comment briefly on rule of thumb for the application of the three types of equipment. The three are bucket line, bucket wheel and drag line dredges. From a standpoint of high volume movement over a short distance, between 50 and 300 feet, the drag line dredge is historically the most cost effective type of machine to be utilized if bulk excavation is the single driving consideration. It is typical for this sort of equipment to operate in the 10 to 30 cents per cubic yard range, however, cost of operation is not the sole consideration. Typically the drag line mixes and remixes the material which it excavates. In the event that gold recovery is the object of the exercise, a strong potential for loss of the valued mineral exists. Additionally, drag lines do a poor job of bottom cleaning, particularly if there is a ridged or creviced bottom which must be cleaned and in some cases partially removed to assure recovery of the highest percent of valuable ore. The bucket line dredge has, until recently, been considered an extremely cost effective device. THE PLANNED MAINTENANCE PROGRAM All concentrators should start with a planned maintenance program from day one. Every- body thinks they have a program in place before start-up, but in reality, most have only a fraction of what is needed to avoid the "Post Start-up Disaster" (PSD) - two years for start-up is not that uncommon. An effective program has all of the following: (1) Good people. (2) Area Maintenance. (3) Good PM Checklists. (4) Daily Work Schedules. (5) Written Work Orders. (6) Equipment Histories. (7) Backlog Control. The installation of a workable program takes hard work, talent, and commitment. You have to know what you are doing (hard work will not replace talent). Good People Good people are available in any location if you make the effort. Always check references carefully (both superiors, peers and subordinates). Was the last concentrator they worked at successful? Was it clean? Find out! Success or failure follows people around. I know people who are experts on PSD because they have lived through it three or four times. You need some college trained people with hands-on experience. There are no secrets, you have to make the effort. If you make a mistake in hiring (and you probably will), make the tough decision necessary to rectify it quickly. Area Maintenance Area maintenance refers to organization of supervision such that one person is uniquely accountable for every inch of ground and piece of equipment. Avoid overlapping authority if at all possible. You must have a planner as a staff position. A foreman cannot effectively plan and

By implementing various mining practices, mine operators can reduce the respirable dust exposure levels of the roof bolter and the continuous miner operators. The Bureau of Mines has developed a computer program, entitled AMP (Alternative Mining Practices), that gives a quantitative comparison of these reductions. The alternative mining practices and their corresponding reductions in dust exposure levels that are evaluated by the program include a remote control continuous miner, a half-curtain ventilation system, two auxiliary fan-tubing bypass ventilation systems, a modified cutting sequence, a comparison between single-split and double-split ventilation networks, and a comparison between exhausting brattice and exhausting tubing. Descriptions of each of these mining practices are included in the report. The report also includes a hypothetical case study to show how AMP enables mine operators to select the technique(s) that is best suited to their particular needs. AMP is a compiled basic program that has been designed to run on computers with a DOS version 2.0 or later operating system. It includes high resolution graphics (640 X 200 dot positions) designed to run with video boards that are functionally compatible with the IBM Monochrome/ Printer Adapter. Graphic screens are selected from menus, and can be bypassed if the computer is not equipped to handle high resolution mode. Their primary function is to show proper implementation of the mining practices evaluated by the program. This package requires a minimum of 256K bytes of RAM. In spite of the large annual expenditures and the vast field of activity covered, it cannot be said that many new grinding machines have actually come to light and modified the existing market for more than half a century. Manufacturers have mainly made advances in increasing machine sizes, efficiency and reliability, and in machine automation. The relatively recent emergence of roller presses is the only exception to this homogenisation of machine ranges. The development of roller presses in pregrinding has shown the advantages of compression grinding over the ball mill from the power consumption point of view. But classical roller presses still have maintenance problems due to the high grinding pressure. The FCB Research Centre has carried out much work in this field and in particular has studied the advantages of this process in pregrinding and integral grinding. These researches lead to the development of two new compression grinding machines. The first one, HOROMILL®, presented for the first time on the 8th European symposium on comminution at Stockholm, finds its application in the field of fine to very fine grinding in dry process. The second one, RHODAX®, presented at INTERMAT in Paris, covers the field of secondary and tertiary crushing and the first stage of grinding for most of the minerals in dry or wet process. Its high reduction factor permits to do with only one machine the work realised today with two or three crushing/milling stages. These two complementary machines offer a wide range of combination summarised on [Figure 1].

Few members of the general public have a clear understanding of mineral resources. Most people do not know how minerals are mined or why they must be extracted from many diverse locations. Many people acquire knowledge of mineral development from mass media sources with incomplete details or obvious anti-mining bias. The California Mineral Education Foundation was formed in 1991 to provide educational opportunities for the public and industry. There have been major changes in earth science teaching requirements for kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12) curricula since the passage of California Senate Bill 813 in 1983. Model graduation standards, curriculum standards and the state science framework mandate substantial coverage of geoscience topics. The California State Commission on Teacher Credentialing has completed changes in multiple subject and single subject science credentials which will require more geoscience preparation for all teachers. The need for pre-service and in-service education in geoscience is at an all time high. Teachers must have continuing education to maintain their credentials and many are now seeking information in geoscience. The California Mineral Education Foundation designed and conducted the California Mineral Education Conferences held in August 1991 and 1992. The conferences involved lectures and field trips on mining geology, environmental problems and political concerns. Master teachers were employed to share how they get across mineral resource concepts in the classroom. Ninety-six percent of the participants stated that they had changed to a more positive perception of mining after taking the three day course.

It is indeed an honor for White Pine, as a member of the copper mining industry, to participate in this Rapid Excavation Conference. Although our presentation, as the title indicates, is not a success story, we foresee, through our experience, future application of boring machines and rapid excavation equipment in the hard rock mining industry. One might ask what a copper mining company would be doing with boring machines and why the gamble on a high-cost, capital investment for a relatively untried application. Perhaps a little background on the White Pine mine and its geology will explain our daring and speculative motives. THE WHITE PINE MINE The White Pine Copper Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Copper Range Company, operates a mine, mill and smelter at White Pine, Michigan in the western Upper Peninsula approximately 6 miles due south of Lake Superior. We employ approximately 3,000 people from the surrounding area and mine approximately 25,500 tons of low grade (1%) copper ore per day. The orebody is contained within several distinct sedimentary horizons that comprise the lower 20 feet of a Precambrian formation known as the Nonesuch Shale. Numerous articles and reports have described many aspects of the White Pine operation and the geology. I will brief you only on that criteria which precipitated our interest in rapid excavation equipment and techniques, specifically, boring machines. Mineralogical and optical studies have demonstrated that the siltstones, sandstone and shale beds all contain relatively barren and discrete particles of quartz (25%), feldspar and mica, bonded with

"?irovski Vrh" Uranium deposit in Slovenia is type of mineralized sediments in ore bearing belts of deflected S-structure, in which the belt is less than 25% mineralized. Ore bodies of irregular small thickness, unreliably contoured, made difficult estimation of correct contours, which are necessary for design and exploitation works. The deposit was explored by vertical boreholes made at the surface and by boreholes fanned from drives. For the purpose of application of this estimation method, 1 m composites have been made in slices which were parallel to the referential belt plane. Estimation was made for 1,5m x 1,5m x lm blocks which do correspond to the size of the containers in the ore transport stage. Two variables have been used: the first, indicator of function (ore=1, waste material =0) and kriging method; the second, logarithmical content of Uranium and Minimum Mean Square Error Estimation (MMSEE) method. Based on estimated values of those variables, probability of ore quantity as well as Uranium content over determined cut-off were calculated for each block. Those two parameters enable determination of the most probable form of the ore body in ecah one metter slice. Estimation of sixteen small blocks in a large 1,5m x 1,5m x 1m block made possible estimation of ore quantity and its content for the determined cut-off, as well as categorization of exploration. This method is being used for estimation of ore reserves and planning of exploration operations. The described' methodology was tested in an exploitation block.

Optimization has been defined as the procedure of locating the best of something or the best way of doing something (Mular, 1971). Several texts (Himmelblau, 1972; Ray and Szekeley, 1973; Box and Draper, 1969; and Lee, Adams, and Gaines, 1968) on the subject are available. Such techniques have been placed in two categories, namely, off-line optimization and on-line optimization. For the former, an optimization model is employed; for the latter, a black box approach is involved. The essence of an optimization problem becomes obvious, when a response surface is considered. Suppose that a response (in this case, a criterion of improvement such as profit per day; grade of concentrate per day) denoted by Y, depends only on two variables, X1 and X2, which can be manipulated and controlled. The relationship between Y, X1 and X2 may be represented graphically as shown in Fig. 1. The diagram is called a response surface and its height, Y, is determined by X1 and X2. Points associated with equal responses constitute response contours. The shape is that of a hill, and optimization is the procedure of ascending the hill to reach the top (maximum). In practice, a response surface is subject to disturbances which distort its shape and shift its location from time to time, so that the exact location of a maximum is imprecise. Generally, constraints (restrictions of some sort) on responses and manipulable variables serve to define a region of permissible operation.

Underground roof falls can have devastating effects on the safety of operations personnel, and equipment, and seriously impact production. Immediate steps are usually taken to danger off and secure the area while clean-up efforts are designed and implemented. A critical step, often overlooked due to production demand, is the determination of - why the roof fall occurred so that additional occurrences can be avoided in future developments or what measures can be taken to identify areas that have similar ?symptoms?? Forensic engineering includes the investigation of materials, products, structures or components that fail or do not operate/function as intended. The authors define forensics in ground control engineering as the study of evidence discovered while examining underground roof falls by applying expert observational techniques and established mining engineering principles to determine the probable cause, hypothesize solutions, and design engineering safeguards to prevent reoccurrences. Simply stated, the primary steps in the forensics of underground roof fall techniques are: ?Assess regional and local conditions prior to the event. ? Assess post-event conditions. ? Hypothesize plausible ways in which the pre-event conditions became the post-event conditions. ?Search for evidence that either denies or supports the various hypotheses. ?Apply engineering skill to relate the various facts and evidence into a cohesive scenario of how the event may have occurred. This paper details the proposed technique by utilizing a roof fall case study that required the examination of five primary factors: mine design parameters, excavation geology, method of excavation, method of support, and mining cycle times.

During the past decade, since the appearance of Popoff's (1966) review of grade tonnage calculations, it has become evident that defining a new method which could be followed step by step by a technician and which would improve reserve estimation was not a simple thing to do. Some concepts have emerged though, and most definitions of ore reserve now require a statement of reliability (USGS, 1975; and Zwarten-dyke, 1976). Exactly how the reliability should be computed is not a straightforward process. It also became apparent that not only was reliability a requirement but that additional questions such as how to predict mining re- serves from geological reserves were to be asked. In fact what became obvious is that specific models have to be designed for each type of mine and for each type of question which is asked. Most methods can be encased within a unique general geostatistical, model, but it takes considerable custom tailoring, and there are still questions that are left unanswered. In this chapter, before giving techniques, we intend to first review what should be required from a grade tonnage calculation done at the exploration stage. If the final objective is still to specify a tonnage and grade, with eventually a reliability, many qualifications have to be made before quoting, and of course, calculating these two numbers. Then the currently avail- able methods will be reviewed and future trends will be shown; finally a few case studies will be given and recommendations about the choice of a model will be made.

This paper describes in detail the economic forces affecting cobalt supply, demand, and prices. The major factors that will determine the growth or decline in the use of cobalt in each of its applications are discussed. The flows of cobalt from mine to refinery are described on a company-by-company basis. The paper concludes with a discussion of how the characteristics of the supply and demand sides of market interact to determine cobalt prices.

A review of recent phosphate beneficiation developments shows that Flotaire cells, ranging from 0.20 m to 2.44 m in diameter, have been examined in pilot scale and commercial plants. Applications of the column cells have included sized feed fractions using anionic and cationic reagent systems. In plants where the Flotaire was installed as a test unit or as an optional circuit, its use has been largely discontinued. On the other hand, when management committed to installing the Flotaire as an integral part of the flowsheet, the performance expectations were met or exceeded.
