The bioleaching of mineral sulfide pulps in a bench-scale rotating drum reactor has been studied. The reactor includes horizontal paddles in the inner wall for lifting of the mineral pulp. The performance of the reactor was tested in the bioleaching of a refractory pyritic gold concentrate in the presence of pure Thiobacillus ferrooxidans strain (ATCC 19859). The concentrate was efficiently bioleached at 50% pulp density with the drum operating at 0.5 -1.0 rpm Attempts of bioleaching the concentrate at the same pulp density in conventional stirred reactor showed severe inhibition of bacterial activity. The results demonstrated that the drum reactor allows to operate at much higher pulp densities than the conventional stirred tank reactor. This behavior is explained in terms of an improvement of the bacterial activity due to a better control of the attrition of the mineral particles.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are being explored by researchers to measure concentrations of gas emissions in situations where such measurements are otherwise extremely difficult to obtain, such as NO and NO2 (NOx) emissions from surface mine blasting. Recently, countries have imposed or are planning to impose surface blasting gas pollution regulations, which creates a need for an improved understanding of UAV-based gas measuring systems. The experiments detailed in this paper were performed to determine if airflow generated by the rotors, also known as downwash, unnaturally alters concentration measurements. Downwash turbulence could create locations of varying pressure, which could affect concentration. A UAV fitted with gas sensors was attached to a stand in a controlled environment containing a mixture of NOx. The gas sensor measuring points were placed at various distances on and from the UAV body to evaluate downwash effects on gas concentration. Results show that the presence of downwash turbulence causes no statistically significant changes to concentration measurements at any distance or direction from the UAV. Based on these results, it is possible to use a UAV-mounted gas monitor to measure concentrations without concern for downwash interference, provided the UAV and measuring point are entirely contained within the gas cloud.

Microorganisms have been widely used for hydrometallurgical operation and effluent treatments(Smith, et. al., 1991a; Gadd, et. al., 1986; Darnall, 1986; Paponettis, et. al., 1991; Mihaylov, et. al., 1991; Rusin, et. al., 1991; Noble, et. al., 1991; Yang, et. al., 1991). In recent years there is a growing interest in using microorganism for flocculation of minerals fines and flotation collector (Smith, et. al., 1991b, 1991c; Misra, et. al., 1991a, 1991b, 1992a, 1992b). It is envisioned that the utilization of nonpathogenic microorganism and/or extracellular surfactant derived from microorganism as a flotation collector will replace some of the environmentally toxic flotation collectors and at the sometime improve flotation efficiency. The selection screening, and judicious selection of appropriate microorganism as flotation collector has been a challenge to process engineers. Over the past five years, continued research at the University of Nevada has shown that certain microorganism Mycobacterium phlei (M. phlei) can be a good flocculating agent and has potential to be used as a flotation collector (Dubel, et. al., 1992; Misra, et. al., 1991a, 1991b, 1992a, 1992b; Smith, et. al., 1991d; Chen, et. al., 1992a, 1992b)).

AVAILABLE MACHINES Machines discussed in this section include only rubber tire mounted kerf cutting machines of a self¬propelled electrically powered design. Such machines handle bars up to 4.6 m (15 ft) in length, cutting kerfs of from 115 to 191 mm (4.5 to 7.5 in.). The basic design concept of all machines currently in production is very similar. The chassis features dual driving wheels on the cutter-bar end, fixed directly to the main frame. The steering wheels on the outby end of the frame are articulated in some manner to keep all four wheels on the floor over uneven bottom. Machine power for tramming, and all other functions except powering the cutting chain, is furnished from a pump motor that drives the specific pump or pumps required by a given machine. The cutter chain is driven through a mechanical drive train from a separate electric motor having no duty other than driving the chain. The general arrangement of a cutting machine is shown in Fig. 1; two types of machines, with their specifications are shown in Figs. 2 through 5. A hydraulically powered cable normally is included to eliminate the need for manual cable handling and make this a one-man machine. A bug duster, though optional, is needed for most applications. The bug duster is an hydraulically driven scroll conveyor located directly behind the cutter chain drive sprocket. Its function is to move the cuttings away from the sprocket to prevent them from packing up in this area and consuming a lot of machine power to further pulverize them. Available machines vary from models 610 mm (24 in.) high that can cut horizontally only from 203 mm (8 in.) below ground line to 229 mm (9 in.) above, to machines 1143 mm (45 in.) high that can cut in any plane from 178 mm (7 in.) below the ground line to 3.7 m (12 ft) above it. Most currently manufactured machines fall in the 17 200 to 20 400 kg (38,000 to 45,000 lb) weight range, but can be dis¬assembled for underground installation where weight and size are a problem. Maximum teardown results in all pieces having a weight of 5400 kg (12,000 lb) or less and a size allowing passage through a 1.2 x 2.1-m (4x7-ft) opening. Further reduction in either size or weight of the parts becomes a serious problem. Machines currently being manufactured are avail¬able for use with power supplies of 250 v dc; 500 v dc; 440, 550, or 950 v ac (60 Hz). Also available are machines for use on 415, 500, and 950 v 50 Hz. De¬signs to allow operation on other voltages of either 50 or 60 Hz can be made available without any serious problems. As of September 1977, a typical medium-seam ma¬chine without the extra options needed for unusual conditions, but fully equipped to operate, was selling for about $185,000. "The term “aggregate” has a number of definitions depending primarily on the use of the material. Aggregate in some context is sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag or other material of mineral composition used in bituminous and portland cement concrete, mortar, plaster, railroad ballast, filter beds and a variety of other uses where aggregates can be utilized.Of the natural aggregates, crushed stone is widely used for most construction purposes. Crushed stone can be mined from a variety of rock types such as limestone, dolomite (dolostone), granites, and granitic type rocks, basalt, gabbro (trap rock), sandstones, schist, marble, gneiss, quartzite, rhyolite, as well as other rock types. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) breaks down the rocks by type sold as follows: limestone, dolomite, marble, calcareous marl, shell, granite, trap rock (basalt, diorite) sandstone/quartzite, slate, volcanic cinder and scoria and miscellaneous stone.In 2015, the USGS estimates that 1.32 Gt (1.45 billion st) of crushed stone were produced in the United States. The volume of crushed stone produced, and the numerous mines that produce it make the crushed stone industry the largest mining industry in the United States. The five leading states for production of crushed stone in 2015 were Texas, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Florida and Ohio. The size of the first two states certainly helps in output because of the large market area. The remaining states benefit from being able to barge along rivers to outside markets in adjoining states. Georgia producers rail large amounts of granitic aggregate to Florida and adjacent states devoid of crushed stone aggregate, especially skid resistant aggregate (aggregate used on the top course of asphalt roads)."

Introduction Despite the focus on the so-called "high-tech" and service components of the economy, the minerals industry in 1987 continued to provide the world the overwhelmingly dominant share of the total raw material supply for all manufacturing operations. And, in the form of fertilizers and other soil treatment materials, minerals also supplied indispensable raw materials to ensure continued high production of the agricultural and forestry sectors of the world's economy. Moreover, the role of minerals as a source of construction raw materials was essential to that sector. On the basis of preliminary and partial statistics on world output of crude mineral commodities, 1987 appears to have been a year of further recovery from the recessional years of 1981-1983. The value of world crude mineral industry production (all mineral commodities including fuels) apparently advanced about 5% to nearly $1.1 trillion in terms of constant 1983 dollars.' That is significantly above the recently revised 1986 level of nearly $1.05 trillion, but still considerably below the record-to-date high of $1.27 trillion set in 1980, as shown in Table 1. That growth in value took place despite relatively flat world oil prices - oil being the most important component of the aggregate, as it has been for decades. There is insufficient information available to assess the total value of processed mineral commodities (refined metals, refined oil, manufactured fertilizers and the like). But a figure of $2.6 trillion (constant 1983 dollars) would be a quite conservative estimate for those materials derived only from primary or newly mined materials. And an additional, as-yet-unestimated increment should be added for processed materials derived from secondary raw materials - scrap and other reclaimed substances. From a world trade viewpoint, minerals and mineral products dominate in terms of tonnage. For example, in 1985, on a weight basis, mineral commodities including fuels constituted more than 58% of all goods moving through the Suez Canal and 53% of all goods passing through the Panama Canal. These waterways cannot accommodate giant tankers and ore carriers. So an even larger share of total oceanic trade is composed of minerals and mineral products. Yet, in terms of value, the share of the total accounted for by these industrial essentials is much lower than that accounted for by other commodities, most notably sophisticated high-tech equipment and other goods with a relatively high per-pound value. Worldwide data on the value of mineral export trade for 1987 is so incomplete at this writing that it is impossible to assess that actual level. Indeed, the compilation of similar available data for 1986 covers only the exports of nations with developed market economies. In 1985, these countries accounted for only 67% of total world exports of all goods. They accounted for only 41% of world exports of major mineral commodities: crude nonmetals; metal ores, concentrates, and scrap; mineral fuels; nonferrous metals excluding gold; and iron and steel. For these developed-market-economy countries, the value of exports of these major mineral commodities declined by more than 10% between 1985 and 1986. A tube bundle system (TBS) is a mechanical system for continuously drawing gas samples through tubes from multiple monitoring points located in an underground coal mine. The gas samples are drawn via vacuum pump to the surface and are typically analyzed for oxygen, methane, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. Results of the gas analyses are displayed and recorded for further analysis. Trends in the composition of the mine atmosphere, such as increasing methane or carbon monoxide concentration, can be detected early, permitting rapid intervention that prevents problems, such as a potentially explosive atmosphere behind seals, fie or spontaneous combustion. TBS is a well-developed technology and has been used in coal mines around the world for more than 50 years. most longwall coal mines in australia deploy a TBS, usually with 30 to 40 monitoring points as part of their atmospheric monitoring. The primary uses of a TBS are detecting spontaneous combustion and maintaining sealed areas inert. The TBS might also provide mine atmosphere gas composition data after a catastrophe occurs in an underground mine, if the sampling tubes are not damaged. TBSs are not an alternative to statutory gas and ventilation airflowmonitoring by electronic sensors or people; rather, they are an option to consider in an overall mine atmosphere monitoring strategy. This paper describes the hardware, software and operation of a TBS and presents one example of typical data from a longwall coal mine.

A sample of thorium-contaminated soil from Kirtland Air Force Base (AFB) was subjected to froth flotation for removing thorium contaminants. A series of flotation tests were conducted to screen and evaluate the reagents. Among the collectors used, sodium oleate exhibited to show the promising results. Preliminary tests showed that a concentrate having activity as high as 5300 pCi/g can be obtained from the contaminated feed soil having activity 800 pCi/g. The volume reduction obtained was 89% and the activity recovery in the concentrate was 68%. The paper discusses the physico-chemical characterization data and the potential physical separation decontamination schemes for the thorium contaminated soils.

INTRODUCTION The solid fossil and nuclear fuels, but especially uranium, are given prominent, indeed leading, roles by energy experts in most long range estimates of world energy futures. Optimistic forecasts are inspired partly by the disproportionately large solid fuels resource base compared to present rates of consumption or to oil and gas resources, and partly by the vision of inexpensive high technology applications. Such a view overlooks the fact that while resource- use disparities and new technologies give allure to the promise of the solid fuels, they do not guarantee cheap solutions to the basic problems of solid fuel uses: viz., their relatively difficult conditions for efficient ignition and control, including the management of environmentally acceptable residuals disposal. Contrary to the varied versions of this optimistic hypothesis, this paper shows that a great many persistent economic and technical problems interfere with such a simple inference. These act as constraints which qualify or dispute much of the national energy policy based on existing modeling of solid fuel requirements and optimistic engineering evaluations. The assumptions and techniques of such exercises are sometimes at fault. As often as not, however, the distortions created in open market fuel com- petition due to misdirected national energy policies themselves are to blame for misdirected efforts. A number of interesting implications result. Among them are the distinct possibility that the low technology applications will dominate, so that more direct coal and less synfuel or nuclear use will occur; that, accordingly, exhaustion rates for uranium will be low, that the most extensive growth of solid fuel through 2000 will be in conventional pulverized coal cumbustors, and that the traded share of the world coal bum will be much larger than predicted. These trends will place much more pressure on oil and gas prices than forecast by most experts. On the way to these findings the paper demonstrates that solid fuel resource adequacy in situ, balanced against the projections of demands as capacity requirements, mean little as conventionally measured by years to exhaustion or potential supply schedules. Indeed, all stock concepts of demand requirements or of fuel re- sources must be tied to the paths of the unit costs and the deliverable prices of all substitute fuels and systems over time. This requires a dynamic analysis of supply and demand, integrated with geological and engineering constraints, to provide insights into the multiple modes of market and product substitution. Market forces rather than technical promise will determine the allocation of the solid fuels. Moreover, the equilibrium paths of individual fuel prices and market shares are not easily simulated by general or network models, and decision makers will continue to rely on the partial, local comparison of alternatives in their choices of fuel systems at any time. The Summitville Au-Ag-Cu district in the southeastern part of the San Juan volcanic field has been a major gold producer in Colorado. Mineralization is hosted by the composite South Mountain quartz latite porphyry volcanic dome, which is believed to have been localized by the intersection of the northwest margin of the Platoro-Summitville caldera complex and the northwest-trending Platoro fracture zone. K-Ar age dates indicate that alteration and mineralization were nearly contemporaneous with emplacement of the dome at 23-20 m.y. ago, 6-7 m.y. after collapse of the Platoroo-Summitville caldera complex. The dome consists of at least four major phases including strongly altered quartz latite porphyry; a late-mineral, coarse-grained sanidine quartz latite porphyry; and postmineral quartz latite dikes. The dome was emplaced into intracaldera rhyodacite and andesite. Gold-silver-copper mineralization is concentrated near the top of the dome and is associated with pods, pipes and steeply dipping tabular zones of silicification and advanced argillic alteration. Alteration is zoned outwards from the center of mineralization through argillically and propylitically altered rocks, and is largely confined to the area of the dome. Trace element geochemical patterns for the deposit indicate a central zone of anomalous As-Au-Pb-Ag and low Mn within an exterior zone of anomalous Ag-Au-Pb-Hg and high Mn. The chief ore mineral is native gold which is associated with goethitic iron oxide in the oxide zone. In the sulfide zone, native gold is associated with copper sulfide-sulfosalt mineralization. A genetic model for the Summitville deposit is based on recent models of modern geothermal systems, with which it shows similarities in alteration, ore mineralogy, zoning, and structural patterns.

This contribution presents the first multi-scale geophysical investigation conducted in the Abakaliki and Obubra mining districts (AOMD), southeastern Nigeria, for the exploration of shallowly emplaced (< 50 m) massive sulfide and barite mineral deposits. Raw airborne magnetic data covering the AOMD was acquired and subjected to diverse enhancement routines to facilitate the identification of areas of subtle magnetic anomalies for subsequent ground truthing. The mineralization is mainly made up of galena, sphalerite, and barite. The contrasting physical properties between these minerals and their host rocks make resistivity, induced polarization (IP), spontaneous potential (SP), and magnetic methods ideal to study and delineate the mineralization and possibly locate the ore bodies. Wenner DC resistivity and IP data acquired along the same parallel traverses are inverted using Res2dinv to produce 2D tomography models of resistivity and chargeability. The resistivity and IP models were successful in delineating zones of sulfide and barite mineralization. The ground SP data collected along the same traverses as the resistivity and IP data were interpreted as line graphs. The 1D SP models show a number of central negative anomalies that could be related to sulfide mineralization. These anomalies show fair-to-good spatial continuity and are in close agreement with the result obtained in the resistivity and chargeability model. This study suggests the presence of exploitable mineral deposits in the AOMD and demonstrates the superior interpretative ability of combined geophysical methods over a single geophysical approach.

In mineral processing practice, flocculation is largely established as an engineering technique of waste water treatment and the study of parameters increasing the settling velocity of particles is still of great importance to improve the process. Further investigations were made using quartz (Q89) and fluorite samples (F91) which included 58.8% and 65.8% of -2.3 µm particles respectively. In all the experiments the flocculation phenomena were observed varying the pH value of the aqueous suspension. In contrast to quartz particles (Q89) which did not flocculate for all pH values, it was, noticed that fluorite particles (F91) flocculated in the alkaline range of pH over 11. With an aqueous suspension containing equal quantities of Q89 and F91, a hetero-flocculation of particles was observed at a range of pH below 10. In this case, the maximum floc size of the hetero-flocculation was 37.0-26.2 µm This size was about three times larger than when quartz (Q84) and fluorite particles (F85) were used with 32.4% and 40.4% of -2.31 µm particles respectively. Besides, in the experiments using Q89 and F91, the maximum size of hetero-flocculated single particles was found to be 6.54 µm instead of 3.27 µm as obtained with Q84 and F85.

Foskor operates a mine in the Northern Province of the Republic of South Africa exploiting the igneous complex at Phalaborwa. It produces about 3 million tons of phosphate concentrate per year by means of froth flotation from 26 million tons of ore of which 16 million is mined and milled on site. The remaining 10 million tons originate at the Palabora Mining Company and is pumped as a slurry to Foskor. Two types of ore are mined and milled namely Foskorite and Pyroxenite. (The main mineral content of this ore is Apatite, Phlogopite and Diopside.) After three stages of crushing the ore is milled using 24 rod mills and 5 verti mills. The apatite is then recovered using four stages of froth flotation. The stocks of Foskorite ore are rapidly being depleted and the PMC tailings will also fall away by the year 2002 so that the whole mining operation will then be centered around the Pyroxenite ore. This will lead to substantial increases in production costs. The recoveries achieved in the flotation plant are largely dependent on the successful operation of the comminution section. Parts of this plant are now 35 years old and the advantages of re-engineering, new technology and automation can only be applied to a limited extent in an effort to reduce costs. It was then decided to investigate alternative milling methods, both wet and dry.

"This paper deals with an innovative mechanized method to bore and simultaneously line circular shafts, adopted in the Naples Metro project for the installation of 10 vertical shafts for ventilation purposes. With this method, excavation of shafts is carried out under a positive head of stabilizing fluid by a milling machine, temporarily set at the bottom of a permanent lining made of precast reinforced concrete segment rings. The debris is evacuated by inverse fluid circulation. The shafts in Naples are 4.5 m I.D., from 34 to 44 m deep and they are all located downtown in a highly urbanized area. They were bored and installed into volcanic soils under a hydrostatic head of up to 30 m. Displacements and groundwater level were constantly monitored to keep control of the effects on the surrounding buildings and utilities. INTRODUCTIONThe extension of Metro Line 1 in Naples (Italy) from the previous terminal of Piazza Dante to Piazza Garibaldi is also called the “low stretch”. Most of it runs along the coastline, encompassing the historical city center, the Greek-Roman Neapolis. The Metro Line crosses under densely urbanized areas for the whole way (Figure 1). It runs beneath Via Toledo, which follows the layout of the ancient Aragonese walls. The first station (Toledo) is located halfway along this street. Then, after a wide bend, the line reaches Piazza Municipio, where the second station is located. From there, the line moves along the axis of Via Depretis and Corso Umberto I, where the stations Università and Duomo are situated. The fifth station is in Piazza Garibaldi and the end of the stretch is located at the Naples Business Center. The twin single track tunnels were bored into volcanic tuff by TBM. This design choice simplified by far the construction of the tunnels and reduced to practically zero the interactions between tunnelling and surface buildings and utilities. Nevertheless, this choice entailed that the line had to be located at depths to the order of 35-45m below ground level and 30-35m below the water table. At each tunnel segment between stations, a pair of ventilation chambers were constructed (10 in total). Each ventilation chamber is connected to one TBM tunnel by a vertical shaft and a horizontal drift at the base of the shaft. The shafts, in addition to tunnel ventilation, provide a safety access/escape."

The aim of this study was to develop an integrated approach to enable identification of areas favourable for the presence of massive sulphide deposits in a given region (Las Herrerias, Spain). It is based on geochemical soil exploration, geophysical surveying (ground gravimetry), detailed geological mapping and a knowledge of the deposits of the South Iberian Massive Sulphide Belt. The multi-dataset approach consists, in the first instance, in standardizing and combining all the geochemical data with reference to their geological setting. Next, the "heavy" anomalies are extracted from the gravimetric survey, regardless of the surrounding context (heavy or light). The results from these two stages are then crossed, so that areas where heavy anomalies are associated with geochemical anomalies can be identified and classified. Crossing the geochemical and geophysical data enables a much tighter selection of anomalies than does the manual superposition of data provided by each method (geology, geophysics, geochemistry).

The 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments specify national objectives for reducing sulfur dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants System-wide reductions can be achieved by combining various emissions controls technologies and allowances, or compliance credits, that can be purchased, sold, or traded. As part of the Coal Quality Expert development project funded by U.S. Department of Energy and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), Black & Veatch has developed an interactive computer tool, the Acid Rain Advisor (ARA). ARA allows the user to develop integrated system-wide compliance plans by comparing the costs and emissions reduction benefits for emissions allowances and various SO2 control technologies such as coal cleaning, fuel switching, and scrubber retrofits.

Coal cleaning with traditional magnetic separation usually yields unsatisfactory results because minerals associated with coal, such as quartz, clay, pyrite and calcite, are weak-or non-magnetic. Magnetic reagent technology is a new mineral processing technology with the capability to enhance the magnetic property of minerals selectively. This reagent can be adsorbed selectively on minerals through the control of surface chemistry and, thus, result in selective magnetic enhancement. The application of this technology on coal cleaning has been experimentally demonstrated. Good separation results can be obtained at low to medium magnetic field strength. Comparison with other processing technologies is included.

Management teams at mining companies begin to ask themselves whether to take a company public and, if so, how to do it as they approach the normal threshold for going public in terms of revenue and operating performance. Today, the expense of going public generally suggests the company has at least $20 million in annual revenue and at least $2 million in cash. The revenue number can be lower for mining companies with large reserves. In order to properly attract the investing public, the company must also be operationally strong with robust prospects. The company should have a strong management team and a consistent history of double-digit growth that will continue into the foreseeable future. Assuming the thresholds are met, a company?s management needs to weigh the pros and cons of going public.

Flotation is the primary method for copper minerals separation from porphyry ores. The need to process difficult-to-float porphyry copper ores presents challenges to engineers and scientists in several areas. This paper is concerned with summarizing generalized problems faced in the processing of porphyry ores and treatment methods to overcome the specific problems. Though some of the problems are interrelated the problems have been classified into three broad catagories. The case studies of some of the successful applications of innovative methods to solve problems related to ore mineralogy, metallurgical aspects of ore treatment and process variables show that quite often the problems are solvable by a judicious choice of flotation variables.
