The loading characteristics of gold-bromide species onto activated carbon were evaluated using a batch system. The overall loading of gold onto activated carbon was rapid for the first few hours, but it continued without cessation as a result of the reduction of gold. Therefore, conventional equilibrium considerations were not applicable. Although loading continued slowly after several days, an abnormally high, loading capacity value of 10-12 meq/g carbon (650-800 kg Au/t) could be attained in 72 hours. The loading of gold-bromo species by activated carbon was by the mass transfer of (AuBr4)- species to the external surface to be reduced to metallic gold by carbon. Elution of gold from loaded carbon was feasible provided the carbon had not been loaded to high capacity values. If loading is carried to high levels, complete elution becomes impractical, and the gold may be recovered by ashing the carbon. For the high loading capacities observed, this option would appear to be cost effective. The effect of several variables on the loading capacity of the activated carbon for gold-bromo species is discussed.

Metallurgical process methods have seen dramatic improvement over the past fifty years. As these improvements have come about, more and more emphasis has been placed on obtaining accurate and rapid analysis of the metallurgical processes. Well-defined conventional laboratory analysis procedures which have proven to be reliable were developed early in the mineral industry's history; however, these conventional procedures, which have not changed appreciably in fifty years, have the serious drawback that they are too slow to be of appreciable value in automatic control of the processes. For example, the assay results normally become available to a mill operator from eight to twenty-four hours after a sample is taken. Since the desired mineral separation can only be made while the minerals are in the flotation circuit, conventional assay results provide information similar to postmortem reports. Consequently, using conventional procedures, the mill is operated with information from an earlier period of time, which may not reflect current conditions. In recent years there has been a steady increase in the volume of required samples. At the same time, labor, material, and overhead costs have continued to rise causing the cost per assay to reach an alarming level. This rising cost per assay, plus the increasing demand for rapid analysis necessary for control, has caused the mining and metal processing industries to look toward other techniques to solve these problems As a result, X-ray fluorescence which can provide on-stream analysis necessary for control, as well as perform numerous laboratory assays at lower cost and at a much greater speed than conventional methods, has gained wide-spread attention. In addition, multichannel X-ray fluorescent instruments are now available which have been perfected to the point where the analysis of the most important chemical constituents is available within one minute after a sample is presented to the X-ray analyzer. Because of these obvious advantages, extensive use is being made today of X-ray analysis in the mining industry to analyze slags, ores, and mineral content of rocks. The results are used to make quick decisions for both mining and beneficiation of metals. For example, X-ray systems which provide rapid on-stream analysis of the slurries at desired points Fn metallurgical processes have recently been developed. The successful application of these systems has moved the milling process a step closer to fully automatic control.

This paper presents the details of the Kramer tunnel project in the Federal State of Bavaria, Germany. This road tunnel, which has been under construction since December 2019, is the key component of the western bypass of the town of GarmischPartenkirchen. Once completed, it will relieve the town’s central district from enormous volumes of traffic. The contractor is the joint venture named ARGE Kramertunnel consisting of BeMo Tunnelling and Subterra. The whole project will be completed and handed over to the project owner, Staatliches Bauamt Weilheim, in 2023. The opening of the entire bypass section including the tunnel to traffic is planned for 2024. The tunnel, with a total length of 3,609 m (2.24 miles) and an estimated cost of EUR 178 million (incl. VAT), is designed as a single-tube, double-lane structure with one traffic lane for each direction of travel. The safety issue that exists for single-tube tunnels is solved by a parallel escape tunnel passable for vehicles. All tunnels and ducts are excavated according to the principles of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). In order to reduce the geological risk for the owner, the escape tunnel was supposed to be completed before the design process for the main tunnel ever began. The exploratory tunnel was awarded to a competitor with an separate contract.

There are tens of thousands of inactive mine features in 274 mining districts in New Mexico (including coal, uranium, metals, and industrial minerals districts). However, many of these mines have not been inventoried or prioritized for reclamation. Many of these mines have existing mine wastes, generated during mineral production, which could have potential for critical minerals, especially since the actual mineral production was generally for precious and base metals and not critical minerals. The purpose of this project is to characterize and estimate the critical mineral endowment of mine wastes and “beta-test” USGS sampling procedures. This project is important to the state of New Mexico because critical mineral resources must be identified before land exchanges, withdrawals or other land use decisions are made by government officials. Future mining of mine wastes that potentially contain critical minerals will directly benefit the economy of New Mexico. Possible re-mining of mine wastes could clean up these sites and pay for reclamation. Furthermore, this project will include training of younger, professional geologists and students in economic and reclamation geology by the PIs.

Modern electronic devices and systems used to enhance miner safety and health are becoming commonplace in underground coal mines. The ability for these devices and systems to function properly in the presence of electromagnetic emissions from other electronic and electrical devices and systems is not entirely understood. To investigate potential electromagnetic compatibility issues of critical mine electronic devices and systems, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are conducting surveys of electromagnetic emissions in underground coal mines. This paper presents the measurement system, methods, and results of electric field electromagnetic emission surveys conducted in three underground coal mine environments in the frequency range of 10 kHz to 1000 MHz. The survey data show that in some environments electric field electromagnetic emissions in underground coal mines approached or slightly exceeded limits as defined by other industrial sectors.

The paper presents the results of a plant test using WEMCO 1 + 1 enclosed flotation machines for inert gas (nitrogen) flotation of by-product molybdenite from copper sulfide concentrate. Copper depressant consumption in the rougher flotation stage was reduced by 68% as reagent consuming oxygen was removed from the flotation air. Unlike other nitrogen flotation systems used in the industry, nitrogen is recovered above the flotation cells and from froth in tails and concentrate streams and recycled, resulting in minimal nitrogen makeup requirement.

The properties of a geologic mass may be considered from a resource or an engineering viewpoint. The primary engineering applications include ground control, excavation, bulk handling, and hydrology. This study will focus upon these areas in descending order. For an adequate geologic description, data is necessary on the following components: (1) the intact rock, (2) geologic structures, (3) contained fluids, and (4) existing pressures and temperatures, see Table 1. This information, combined with the engineering specifications, provides the basis for a formal geotechnical analysis as illustrated in Figure 1. For a structural analysis it is essential to establish the mechanical properties of the material composing the structure. This material, termed the "rock mass," consists mainly of the first two geologic components, the intact rock and geologic structures (Figure 1) Consideration of fluids will be subordinated to their role as chemical agents affecting the mechanical properties. The existence of pressures and temperatures generally lies beyond the scope of this study.

"The Port Mann Main Water Supply Tunnel involves a 1km long tunnel beneath the Fraser River from Surrey to Coquitlam, BC. At depths of up to 60 m below ground, the earth pressure reached 6 bar. The tunnel is constructed using an EPB TBM and gasketed precast concrete segmental liner. The tunnel and two shafts were constructed in a variety of soil conditions ranging from soft to stiff clays and silts, to compact to very dense sands and gravels. After approximately 800m of mining, a very dense and highly variable soil group consisting of cobbles and boulders halted the TBM. Several options were considered to stabilize the TBM face so an intervention could be conducted. Although de-watering was considered, there was risk of settlement to the Port Mann bridge piers, which was within 500m of the tunnel. Hyperbarics were also considered, however, the cost, schedule and uncertainty of the work that needed to be done, made it a risky option. Ground freezing by Liquid Nitrogen was chosen as the best solution, which would provide a frozen block around the face of the TBM. A temporary platform on the river was designed and constructed to enable drilling and installation of the freezing pipes and temperature monitoring equipment. The operation required close coordination among the tunnelling, marine and freezing sectors. Following the intervention, the TBM successfully broke through the reception shaft, and the remaining project was completed. This paper describes the design, construction and operational approaches used for the freezing and serves as a basis for future projects requiring expedited ground freezing."

Silica flotation with amine salts has been a commercial process for years in certain non-sulfide mineral systems. Phosphate rock and feldspar deposits are notable examples. Generally, the quartz is clean and coarse. Primary amines and imidazolines are used, usually in a mole weight range 250-300, ad often fairly impure grades of collectors are satisfactory. As the production of magnetic iron concentrates grew in Michigan, Minnesota, Canada and in foreign locations, the iron mining companies began to explore amine flotation of silica to improve these concentrates. Many of the mining companies, as well as reagent suppliers, government laboratories and university research teams, had already studied amine collectors for silica, but the application to magnetic iron concentrates presented a real commercial opportunity to apply the art. Amine flotation of silica has been accomplished by simple addition of a flotation cell, and possibly a regrind mill, at the end of the magnetic concentration process. The flotation system gave the mill operator a flexible method to control final grade caused by ore variations in the feed. It increased iron content with lower silica, which resulted in lower freight costs per unit Fe and better pellets for blast furnace use.

Starting with rutile, containing more than 55% TiO2 and of the proper particle size, the commercial production of titanium tetrachloride via fluidized bed chlorination is relatively very simple and economical. As compared to shaft chlorination, it operates at a much higher capacity for given sizing of equipment, and appears more foolproof, requiring less attention. Operating data were obtained on a 53" diameter fluidized bed chlorinator using Australian rutile and petroleum coke of controlled particle size. Production rates varied from 20 to 50 tons of crude TIC14 per day for a campaign extending over one month. Close to theoretical yields and efficiencies were obtained from the viewpoint of chlorine and/or rutile consumption. Details of important equipment design, critical operating conditions and pertinent results are described.

Comminution represents one of the major costs of mineral recovery from low-grade ores. Efficient mineral recovery in a typical low-grade ore grinding-flo¬tation process depends on grinding the ore small enough to liberate mineralization without producing excessive slimes, which would result in higher power and flotation reagent costs. Size criteria for efficient grinding should be stated in terms of the distribution of mineralization sizes, but as the mineralization-size distribution is difficult to determine, less desirable criteria of absolute particle-size distribution (PSD) are used in practice. Thus, there is considerable incentive to be able to analyze and predict the PSD performance of grinding circuits for control and optimization of the process. Any realistic model of a grinding circuit must account for recycle of oversize material; such oversize recycle adds to the total mill load and limits total production rate. Simulation of such closed-circuit operation to study grind factors affecting total throughput can be done in a straightforward fashion provided recycle calculations can be added to an accurate input-output model of PSD in the grinding mill itself. Such a total simulation of mill performance is of obvious practical value in assessing the practicality and benefits of various over-all mill control schemes and/or modes of operation. For example, considerable interest has been shown in the development of continuous on-line particle-size sensors and such instruments should be an operating reality in a few years. A total closed-circuit PSD model of this type would be invaluable in the utilization of, and in predicting the pay-out from, such an on-line particle-size sensor. The purpose of this paper is to present a new approach to the development of an input-output PSD model of a grinding mill. The model is continuous in the par¬ticle size coordinate, L, and is based on the principle of a particle population balance along the particle size coordinate. A flowsheet was developed for upgrading Climax tin concentrate to about 45 percent Sn. Bench-scale test work conducted at AMAX Extractive Research and Development, Inc., was used to design a multiple-stage tin- processing flowsheet which included screening, high-intensity magnetic separation, and high- tension (electric- static) separation. Formal engineering and plant installation was accomplished in-house by Climax mill personnel. The successful start-up operation of the facility was the joint effort of the AMAX R&D and Climax-mill staffs.

First comes our definition of education--and education is not the merely formal acquiring of academic knowledge, but the understanding, using and projection of knowledge into our channels of life and thought activity. This past year makes us realize the extent to which price and economic cut-off may stimulate or curtail exploration,, But exploration does not consist solely in the discovery of sources of material. There is just as inspiring and imaginative a territory in the develop¬ment of uses and application--and no one in our base metal industry but would hope that our educational processes would fertilize those springs of inspiration that lie dormant in us all, toward the- imaginative conception of new uses--lead roofing cloths or felts, non-tarnishable copper utensils, further zinc solid state application. Thus an educational pattern should seek to develop imagination and thinking beyond--the possibility of that small but oh so difficult step just ahead of the existing,

"The tunnel sector is excavated into a rock mass heavily affected by tectonics, defined as a regional fault. The rock around the tunnel support undertakes the non – elastic deformation and gradually detaches from the rest of the non affected rock mass, moving inside of the excavated area and tending to fill up the whole space. The initial solution of using stiff support consisting in double steel ribs I12 with circular shape in the upper part and straight vertical pillars in the lower part has proved to be inadequate. Based on the calculations of the subsidence phenomena and a mathematical model, the proposed alternative support was provided by special circular steel ribs – SG-23 –that allows a limited rib deformation (by relative slip between the arch segments) in order to mobilize the contact between the rock contour and the inner face of the rib - not only for the deformed rib but also for the neighboring ribs. 1. INTRODUCTION Hydropower development of Jiu river in Romania, in the narrow gorge sector includes two diversion HPP and a small hydro plant that provides the minimum required flow downstream: CHE Dumitra , CHE Bumbesti and MHC Livezeni (Table 1. Hydropower parameters).The Livezeni intake reservoir is provided by a gated dam located 1250 m downstream of merging point between Jiul de Vest river and Jiul de Est river. The dam is equipped with three radial gates with flap gates with a span of 12 m each and the height of (6 + 3) m. Geometallurgical assessment of orebodies in the mining industry typically relies on bench-scale or lab-based characterization techniques. In this study, we investigate drone- and tripod-based field hyperspectral imaging as a potential addition to the geometallurgy toolkit in multiple applications. This pilot study tests hyperspectral imaging for largescale mineral mapping in and around the active Lisbon Valley copper mine, including natural exposures, previously producing U-V mines, highwalls, dumps, and leaching sites. Tests include different (supervised and unsupervised) mineral data classification methods, varying mineral spectral reference libraries, comparison with ground-truth geological and spectroscopic mapping and sampling, and integration with LiDAR data. The results show that hyperspectral scans can produce spatially registered maps of the distribution of different spectrally active mineral types over dumps, highwalls, leach pads, and natural outcrops. Clays, other phyllosilicates, carbonates, and sulfates showed up particularly well. The sensor was also able to distinguish dry from lixiviant-saturated areas and map different clay types on the leach pads, and shows promise for differentiating types and health of vegetation. These results suggest that hyperspectral imaging, if coupled with robust ground-truthing, can be a useful complement to existing geometallurgical techniques in the mining industry, such as geological mapping, blast hole sampling and automated mineralogy identifications, and handheld spectrometry. In particular, hyperspectral imaging has promise for mapping the distribution of acid-consuming minerals; mapping the distribution of swelling, sliming, and heap-blinding clays; and pinpointing problem areas on heap leach pad surfaces.

One of the prime examples of the versatility of the MARCONAFLO system, which is a body of technology comprising the means to handle, store, load, transport, discharge and reclaim mineral commodities in slurry form, is the direct application of this process to leaching ores. The initial approach was to provide a much improved materials handling system for the transport of copper ores; however, an extensive development program, inclusive of prototype and pilot plant tests, has established that a new leaching concept is possible with this system. Data are presented from the leaching operation of a 25 TPD pilot plant utilizing a copper-oxide ore, mainly chrysocolla. This pilot plant was designed to incorporate true countercurrent flow where the ore is actually in motion, as contrary to vat leaching operations, and the ore being successfully leached is fine crushed ore (3/8-inch x o), contrary to agitation leach circuits. Extractions in excess of 85% of the soluble values are common with only 15 hours of retention time in the MARCONAFLO leaching system.

The problem of pollution of water by mine drainage is at least as old as the mining industry itself. However, research on the formation, composition, treatment, and abatement of mine water is a relatively recent historical event. At Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., acid mine drainage control has been an important area of work since 1944, at which time BCR began sponsorship of research at West Virginia University. The work at West Virginia University involved a detailed study of the acid mine drainage problem and led to the identification of iron oxidizing bacteria as important factors in the formation of acid mine water. The results of this research were summarized in 1954 by Temple and Koehler (1) who concluded that "no practical solution for the problem" of controlling acid mine drainage is yet known.?

The request to participate on your theme panel was accepted with some reluctance but indeed as an honor. My subject was outlined to cover 'Energy Resources - both nuclear and conventional' as related to your theme 'Minerals - Treasure Trove of the West'. This is indeed quite an order and I hope you will forgive me for concentrating mainly on the nuclear-uranium portion with brief references only to conventional fuels some of which will be covered in detail later in your conference. In regard to Uranium, I am speaking on the fringe of the area containing half the uranium reserves in your country and no doubt to many who are very conversant with knowledge of these resources. Nevertheless since our two countries have been very closely allied in both nuclear developments and uranium supplies I hope an exchange of information may be mutually beneficial. Concentration on the nuclear fuel resources is I hope understandable as nuclear energy is the coming source of power which will augment the rapid demand in the industrialized countries and provides hope for economic power in many of the more underdeveloped countries. The situation regarding conventional fuel resources is more widely known and their expanding future revolves around production cost reductions, research into diversified uses, plus more assurance of imports from countries less effected by international controversies determining export policies.

The Government or Jamaica has just completed agreements with four of the five bauxite/alumina companies operating in Jamaica. These companies are Kaiser, Reynolds, Alcoa, and Alcan, and the Agreements came into effect on February 1, 1980. One of the results of these new Agreements is the Acquisition of all company-owned bauxite lands by the Government and the rationalization of bauxite reserves.

Waste phosphatic clay presents a difficult disposal problem and a significant loss of P2O5. Recent developments make this study on the use of phosphatic clay as a feed material for H3PO4 production worthwhile. (a) New data from Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute (FIPR) suggest that the Bclay^ waste can be effectively treated by improved solid separation coupled with flotation to produce feed material for recovering additional phosphate. (b) The use of BOLI Flowsheet^ provides capability to predict performance of aqueous-based processes for a range of possible operating conditions. Using the new FIPR data and BOLI Flowsheet^ enabled the design of a new process that can potentially extend the usefulness of current P2O5 ore deposits. Predictions using OLI Flowsheet were able to identify process conditions that effectively overcome the difficulty of high Mg content of phosphatic clay. Estimated manufacturing cost in the current study lead to valuation of the P2O5 content of the phosphatic clay recovered/utilized at 60 to 70% of that of the phosphate rock feed material currently used. Phosphatic clay should be considered as a valuable material that is currently given zero value. The new FIPR data and BOLI Flowsheet^ enables the design of a new process that can potentially extend the usefulness of current phosphate ore deposits by extending the fraction P2O5 of recovered
