More than 1,200 professionals from the global tunneling and underground space industries are expected to be on hand for the 2009 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference to be held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, NV. The conference, set for June 14-17, is sponsored by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, & Exploration, Inc. (SME) and the Construction Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The four-day conference will feature more than 100 technical papers in 19 sessions. Two one-day short courses are also planned, as are a pair of field trips. And the show?s exhibit will feature more than 120 of the industry?s leading equipment and service suppliers.

In the mining industry and particularly in the processing plants, we use some large and unusual equipment. Understanding what it is and what it does is important to good operations, but how do you teach a new employee. When I started out in this field, the information on the processing equipment was easy to come by. Equipment manufacturers readily supplied it; their salesmen, often engineers themselves, knew how important the availability of this information was. Old engineers used their notebooks to train the new engineers. Over time this has changed. Equipment manufacturers have changed hands or gone out of business, and often the older engineers are gone. As a start in reversing this, this presentation will be an introduction to sizing, selecting, and operation of some of this equipment, in particular gravity separating equipment. For public organizations, preparing accurate project cost estimates is a critical component in capital project planning. Project delivery methods provide a structured approach to moving projects through the design and construction lifecycle, and typically use cost estimates as key inputs at each stage to determine if the project will advance. As design stages can occur years or even decades before construction contracts are awarded, estimates need to make reasonable assumptions about how the work may be executed (means and methods) as well as potential future market trends so that appropriate values for material pricing, labour costs, escalation, and owner’s costs can be included. This process is challenging enough during stable markets, as historic trends can often be misleading and require a suitable understanding of economic factors to use appropriately. When you mix in the market volatility that has been observed since 2020, developing accurate project cost estimates becomes even more challenging. In cases such as this, having a structured approach to cost estimating that includes an adequate risk-based reserves cannot be overstated as it provides the basis for ongoing project decisions. This paper explores some of the historic and more recent market trends that have impacted key aspects of project cost estimates for capital project planning. It also provides recommendations on how to develop cost estimates for infrastructure projects, with examples from Metro Vancouver, which plans for and delivers regional-scale services to 2.6 million residents. A brief commentary on the use of escalation clauses in contracts is also presented.

Lithium is a top-quality mineral in the energy market, with growing demand. It has many applications in medical, nuclear, and energy industries. The purpose of this article is to quantify and analyze the economic potential and projected global demand for lithium annually. It aims to determine Peru’s (specifically Puno) positioning in the global context in 2025 and 2030. The article also seeks to identify the main regulatory, environmental, and social challenges to sustainably exploit lithium in Peru. The study employs applied research (mixed approach), descriptive-correlational scope, and observational, crosssectional design. The methodology demonstrates the use of statistical techniques to model and make predictions about this energy-transition metal. Academic sources were reviewed to enable a comparative approach and projection into the future of lithium for development in the mining industry. In the last 10 years, lithium demand has grown, noting a 600% increase in the economy and projected annual growth of +26%. Exponential growth in resources is projected, where econometric, R-multivariable and R-linear models estimate that Peru could supply 1.5% in 2025 and 3% in 2030 of global lithium. Estimated growth of 5–15% in socio-environmental conflicts is projected with the start of lithium exploitation (Peru – Puno). The global potential of lithium demonstrates exponential growth. Lithium reserves in Puno - Peru would rank 13th between 2025 and 2030. It is necessary to establish a clear regulatory framework to avoid excessive increase in socio-environmental conflicts.

This paper explores the age-old concept of mine-mill reconciliation from a new perspective. Advances in reconciliation processes have been slow to materialize because in the quest for “rightness”, engineers, geologists and metallurgists have become entrenched in their viewpoints, dutifully performing to the metrics and expectations imposed upon them by the siloed organization. Moreover, reconciliation has not been viewed as a primary value creator, but an accounting non-value added task. In reality, the knowledge from reconciliation can significantly enhance yields. Critical review of the direct variables (tons, grade, etc.) and other less-obvious variables (incentives, communication, etc.) reveal a complex web of barriers to be cleared by management in order to realize benefits. Also, mineralogical reconciliation methods may offer renewed faith in the process.

Feldspar, a low-alumina, and abundantly available aluminosilicate source, is explored in this study to extract aluminum and potassium values. The sample comprises lamellar layers of microcline and albite with quartz containing 17.4% Al2O3, 9.67% K2O, and 66.3% SiO2. Mechanical (milling) and thermal (alkali and acid baking) activation are investigated, followed by HCl leaching. The milling treatment up to 6 h is inefficient in phase dissociation and results in ~ 40% Al and K dissolution. The alkali thermal treatment yielded 80% Al and 71% K extraction. Direct precipitation of the dissolved Al and Si values yielded alumina purity of ~ 29%, and silica gelation separated SiO2 and improved alumina product (94% purity, 71% recovery). Acid baking yielded 98% pure alumina precipitate; however, Al and K extraction were limited to ~ 45% and 65%, respectively. The microwave-assisted alkali treatment was optimal with 800 W and 10 min processing conditions yielding 80% Al and 71% K recovery with 2.26 kWh/kg alumina of thermal energy consumption. The study examines the impact of different drawbell geometries on hang-ups during ore extraction in underground mining. Using the discrete element method, the research compares three drawbell geometries: drawer, circular, and El Teniente. The findings indicate that the El Teniente geometry experienced more hang-up events, while the circular geometry had fewer.

The European climate and energy framework for 2030 is highlighting the reduction of man-made CO2 by increasing the use of renewable energy. In this spirit, Germany has decided to erase coal use as an energy source by 2038 completely. This strategy premises a feasible, responsible and sustainable post-mining management. The Research Institute for Post-Mining (FZN) at the TH Georg Agricola University in Bochum, Germany, has developed a holistic approach to meet post-mining challenges. In all efforts, the FZN aims to achieve the fundamental goals of the United Nations to deal with the resources of our planet responsibly and sustainably.

The normal practice for processing complex sulphide ore has been to grind with steel balls and/or rods in steel mills before flotation. Little thought had been given to the effect of grinding media on flotation selectivity of copper-lead -zinc ore until 1960 when Rey and Formanek(1) published their experiments on sphalerite floatability after grinding in a porcelain mill with ceramic pebbles. The studies by Rey and Formanek had a pronounced effect on the milling of copper-lead-zinc ores in Canada and possibly throughout the world at a time when autogenous grinding was creating a great deal of interest. The impression was created, and possibly still exists with some mill men, that grinding an ore in the absence of steel will result in a loss of selectivity between copper, lead and zinc minerals. This is in spite of the fact Rey and Formanek's experiments showed that the "naturall floatability" of sphalerite was not apparent after grinding in a porcelain pebble mill in an alkaline pulp.

Siderite ore with high phosphorus content was reduced isothermally at 1,050° C with pulverized coal and different dosages of sodium carbonate. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energydispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX) were used to characterize the samples. The influence of sodium carbonate on the carbothermic reduction process was investigated. Sodium carbonate and its dosage played a considerable role in the carbothermic reduction. The iron particle size in the reduced ore was below 20 µm, and fayalite was abundant without sodium carbonate additive. With a mass ratio of Na2CO3-to-ore of 5% additive, the iron particle size in the reduced ore was generally above 50 µm, and the diffraction intensity associated with metallic iron in the XRD pattern increased. The effect of sodium carbonate on the phase transformation of fluorapatite during carbothermic reduction was also addressed via thermodynamic calculations and aqueous leaching experiments. The results showed that the fluorapatite was not reduced to P2 at 1,050° C, and a portion of the fluorapatite was converted to soluble phosphate. The reduction of siderite can be catalyzed by adding an appropriate amount of sodium carbonate. This catalytic activity was caused by an increase in the reducing reaction activity of FeO and the acceleration of the carbon gasification reactions. The decrease in phosphorous content in the iron concentrate was attributed to an improvement in the separation of the iron phase from the slag phase when sodium carbonate was added and with the formation of soluble phosphate.

White Pine Copper Company began operating a plant designed to recover copper matte particles from its discarded reverberatory furnace slags in April, 1972. Seasonal operation, generally the months of April through November, continued through October, 1974, shutting down due to feed exhaustion. White Pine reverberatory furnace slags contained economically recoverable amounts of copper for a variety of reasons. Among them: 1. White Pine concentrates yield extremely high matte grades (65+% Cu) and viscous slags. The viscous slags hinder matte settling causing matte "prill" entrapment in the slag 2. White Pine's total refined copper output is accomplished through fire refining requiring special techniques for impurity removal, especially small amounts of nickel introduced from purchased pyrite and chalcopyrite fluxes. These special techniques result in high-copper slags, refractory to smelting, being reintroduced into the reverberatory furnace. 3. Furnace bottom build-ups resulting in mechanical matte entrapment through the formation of "dams" hindering matte flow. 4. Occasional concentrate fluxing and furnace atmosphere control problems.

Shovel excavation constitutes a significant component of production costs in any surface mining operation. This makes shovel loading an important cost center that needs to be improved to lower production costs. Optimization of tool design will improve energy efficiency in earthmoving operations. However, modeling the soil-tool interaction is a complex process due to the fact that forces for excavating particulate material are functions of many variables. The magnitude of this resisting force depends not only on the type of soil but on the size, shape and orientation of the cutting element. Moreover, part of this complexity is attributed to the fact that the behavior of the material during excavation is not yet well understood. For the past five decades, researchers have mostly used the passive earth pressure theory to study the soil failure patterns around a cutting tool and to develop force prediction models for design optimization with some success. Although the force models developed from the passive pressure theory have been successful to some extent, they can hardly be extended to a general case because of the underlying assumptions and simplification of tool shapes. This paper aims at reviewing some of the existing empirical and analytical methods of cutting and excavation tool modeling with a focus on their merits and limitations. The paper also explores the use of numerical methods, specifically the discrete element method, for dealing with the unresolved aspects of soil dynamics in excavation.

Three nutrient amendments and a biological seed inoculant were evaluated for use in establishing vegetative cover on waste rock substrates. Randomized blocks were placed on three substrates. Treatments included two types of organic fertilizer, mineral fertilizer, Azospirillum bacterial inoculant, plus controls. The seed mix consisted of native grass species adapted to low nutrient conditions. Canopy cover has been monitored for three growing seasons. Results indicate : 1) two of three substrates support plant growth following amendment with organic fertilizers; 2) organic fertilizers increase cover substantially over mineral fertilizer; and 3)Azospirillum had no effect on canopy cover.

A modular computer program APEX (AMAX Process Evaluation Executive), has been developed at AMAX Extractive R&D, Golden, Colorado to facilitate rapid simulation of steady state material and energy balances of existing and/or proposed metallurgical process flowsheets. Currently, APEX is being used for the design, analysis, and evaluation of several of AMAX?s Nickel, Molybdenumand Tungsten processes. A unique feature of APEX is that it allows specifications of flow rates and compositions for different solid size fractions in addition to aqueous organic and gaseous phases. Thus, a metallurgical process which may involve crushing, grinding, flotation, leaching, washing, solvent extraction, precitation and refining operations can be simulated in a single computer run using APEX. APEX requires two input data files. The first is a process data file which includes physical and thermodynamic properties of the various chemical components of interest. This data file is unique to the process under study and does not require changes for alterations in the process flowsheet. The second data file is specific to a simulation case and includes descriptions of the flowsheet, various feed streams and the process equipment's operating conditions. In addition to temperature, pressure and percent solids, calculated information for each stream includes weight and volumetric flow rates, chemical compositions, specific gravities and enthalpies of solid, liquid and gas phases. For each process equipment in the flowsheet, APEX prints its operating conditions and detailed information about the streams that enter and leave the unit. Models of several general unit operations are preprogrammed in APEX. Also, the modular design of APEX permits quick and easy additions of simulation models which are specific to new and/or unique process operations. To study process stability and optimization, APEX permits several cases of a flow-sheet to be run together. Three simulations of the Moa Bay Nickel process have been excluded to illustrate the ease and flexibility of using the APEX system.

Conventional tailings slurry contains a significant amount of water, and water management is key to ensuring the stability of a tailings storage facility (TSF). Simply reducing the water content in the slurry before discharging it from the mill could be an effective way to improve TSF water management. This study investigated the potential for using an environmentally friendly polymer as a new drag reduction agent (DRA) to reduce frictional pressure loss and also conserve water. It entailed conducting pipe loop tests to assess the polymer’s effect on pressure loss in tailings flow and then applying the test results to validate a numerical model using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The model was also used to determine the polymer’s optimal concentrations at given solid concentrations and flow rates, its effect on energy efficiency for tailings transportation, and its potential for saving water. A case study for a mid-sized, hard-rock mine with a throughput of 50,000 t/day found that the solid concentration could be increased from 30 to 45% with no pressure loss by applying 1996 m3 of the polymer per day. Adding the polymer also resulted in water savings of 57,552 m3/day. The results of this study demonstrated the potential for using the new DRA not only to improve TSF stability but also to save water.

The incidence of heat stroke in the South African gold mining industry is today small (less than 1 in 10 6 shifts worked). Acclimatization and selection procedures have been developed and applied throughout the industry, underground working conditions have, and are being improved, and personnel are to-day made more aware of heat stress and its consequences than ever before. Although these actions have, over the years, brought about a steady reduction in the incidence of heat stroke (see Figure 1) the small incidence of heat stroke which persists indicates that heat stress is still a problem. This realization provides the stimulus for the work presented in this paper, which has as its primary objective the development of reliable heat stress limits for men working in South African gold mines. [ ] In keeping with recent trends3I4 the approach followed in this paper is based on the physical principles of heat transfer. Crocidolite is a well known causative agent for mesothelioma. Studies have shown that the pathogenicity of the fiber from different mines varies considerably and it has been postulated the parameter that appears most likely to account for this variation is fiber width. Epidemiological studies have shown that ‘thin’ fibers from mining areas of Western Australia and the Cape Province, in South Africa are associated with a high mesothelioma risk while exposure to ‘thick’ asbestiform amphibole fiber of the same fiber type are associated with little or no mesothelioma risk. This study is concerned with ‘thick’ Bolivian crocidolite but similar findings also probably explain the paucity of mesotheliomas in the Finnish anthophyllite, South African amosite and African Transvaal crocidolite mines. The findings from the present study suggest the incidence of mesothelioma in the three major cities of Bolivia is not significantly elevated above background even though Bolivian crocidolite has been used for the past 60 years commercially and residentially in all three cities. Although some cases of mesothelioma may have been missed due to a failure to reach hospital or a shortened natural lifespan, mesothelioma generally occurs after the age of 50, we cannot tell precisely the extent to which these were confounding. We suggest the most likely explanation for the lack of mesotheliomas despite the large populations at risk from the long and extensive residential and commercial use of crocidolite containing products, is related to an increased fiber width distribution and a concomitant reduction in the ‘Stanton fiber size’ fraction.

The Cigar Lake uranium deposit was discovered in 1981 at the south western end of Waterbury Lake, approximately 660 km north of Saskatoon in the province of Saskatchewan (see Figure 1). It is the largest undeveloped high grade uranium deposit in the world. It contains proven and probable reserves of more than 226 million pounds U3O8 at an average grade of 20.7%. The world average grade is less than 1% U3O8. [ ] The ore body is located about 450 m below surface at the interface between sandstone above and basement rock below (see Figure 2). The sandstone is fractured rock and saturated with water. This makes water inflow a real hazard at the mine. In fact there have already been two significant mine inflow events. The first of these occurred in October 2006 and resulted in the flooding of the mine. The second occurred in August, 2008 during mine recovery activities.

Mining at Newmont Mining?s Phoenix?s Mine is currently done by surface operation in the Fortitude and Bonanza pits at a combined rate of approximately 100 kt/d (110,000 stpd). A portion of the orebodies targeted by these pits was mined previously by underground mining methods, dating back to the mid-to late-1800s. Most of the underground workings (voids) are located in the west central area of the Bonanza pit. The surface operation requires excavation through voids, and there is a risk of pit floor subsidence that has to be addressed. This article presents a review of the risk mitigation measures that were implemented to reduce risks to people and equipment working in the area.

Surface subsidence induced by underground coal mining activities, especially longwall mining operations, can cause various problems to interstate highways ranging from structural integrity to drivability to safety. Accurate subsidence prediction, correct influence assessments and effective mitigation measures are the keys to ensuring the safety of highway traffic. The surface subsidence prediction program, called comprehensive and integrated subsidence prediction model (CISPM), was developed based on the principle of influence function method and has been validated with a large number of subsidence measurements. In this paper, the techniques to use the predicted final surface movements and deformations for assessing their influence on the integrity and functionality of highway structures — such as road surface pavements, concrete slabs and transverse joints — vehicle dynamics, comfort level and drivability are presented. A number of mitigation measures to protect the highway structures and to ensure traffic safety are proposed, along with an application case.
