Subsidence from underground coal mining alters surface water discharge and availability. The magnitude and areal extent of these impacts are dependent on many factors, including the amount of subsidence, topography, geology, climate, surface water - ground water interactions, and fractures in the overburden. These alterations may have positive and/or negative impacts. One of the most significant surface water impacts occurred in July 1957 near West Pittston, Pennsylvania. Subsidence in the Knox Mine under the Coxton Yards of the Lehigh Valley Railroad allowed pan of the discharge in the Susquehanna River to flow into the mine and create a crater 200 feet in diameter and 300 feet deep. Fourteen railroad gondola cars fell into the hole which was eventually filled with rock, sand, and gravel. Other surface water impacts from subsidence may include the loss of water to the ground water system, the gaining of water from the ground water system, the creation of flooded subsidence troughs, the increasing of impoundment storage capacity, the relocation of water sources (springs), and the alteration of surface drainage patterns.

Engineers at a West Virginia coal preparation plant owned by one of the nation's largest coal producers sought a fire suppression system for the plant's MCC and cable spreading rooms. Officials considered the traditional options of water-based sprinklers, dry chemical, and clean agent systems; however, each of those options presented challenges. Sprinklers can damage electrical equipment, proper delivery of the agent and adequate coverage/protection can be an issue with dry chemical systems, and clean agent systems require room integrity. An alternative to traditional systems was discovered in the Victaulic Vortex Fire Suppression System. The first hybrid inert gas/water mist system (FM 5580), Vortex adequately addressed these concerns. The system, which deploys a high-velocity, low-pressure mixture of water and nitrogen, is not damaging to electrical equipment and extinguishes fires in open, ventilated areas. This is one of the first installations of the Vortex system in a prep plant, and is a compelling example of how new technology can overcome the challenges of traditional technologies. The paper will detail plant specs, situation, and system evaluation, selection, and configuration.

Barrick's Goldstrike AA heap leach pad is an HDPE-lined facility that was used for gold recovery from low-grade ores using conventional cyanide heap-leach technology. The pad was operated from 1987 through 1999. Goldstrike prepared a unique reclamation plan for the AA leach pad facility to provide for a cost-effective, environmentally sound facility closure and to fulfill the State of Nevada's closure requirements. The traditional Nevada leach pad closure procedure involves rinsing to reduce the cyanide concentration to an acceptable level followed by reclamation. However, rinsing does not typically reduce certain metals and compounds, and some constituents may increase in concentration with rinsing. A closure scenario to effect limited infiltration through installation of a capillary cover for the leach pad was developed. The capillary cover was constructed by placing a fine-grained layer above the coarse-grained spent leach material to create a capillary break. In an arid climate such as in Nevada, the fine-grained layer will rarely reach saturation, and the cover will be able to store water during precipitation events and will allow removal of water through evaporation and transpiration (ET) during the growing season. A 1.22-m (4 ft) cover thickness was selected as the optimum design cover thickness. The drainage network on the surface of the recontoured AA heap leach pad was specifically designed to enhance the re vegetation, reclamation and sediment yield control aspects of the AA heap leach pad closure, while resulting in a natural looking surface that is compatible with the surrounding topography. Adjacent natural topographic features were used to establish target design parameters for recontouring and erosion-control design.

In an effort to reduce the risks to underground miners of health hazards associated with exposure to high concentrations of diesel particulate matter(dpm), the Mine Safety and Health Administration(MSHA) published proposed rules in 1998 limiting dpm exposure in both underground coal and metal and nonmetal mines. The proposed rule for underground coal mines would require removal of 95% of dpm by mass, while the rule for metal and nonmetal mines would eventually limit total carbon exposure from dpm to 160 micrograms per cubic meter of air over an eight-hour shift. The comment period for both proposed standards ended on July 26, 1999.In this session, representatives from MSHA, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), equipment manufacturers, labor and industry will discuss the impact of the proposed regulations on mine operations and worker health. Questions will be taken from the audience after brief presentations from each panelist. This paper provides a compilation of written summaries of each panelist’s opening presentation.

"The industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)—a concept that combines sensor networks and control systems—has been employed in several industries to improve productivity and safety. NIOSH researchers are investigating IIoT applications to identify challenges of and potential solutions for transferability of IIoT from other industries to the mining industry. Specifically, NIOSH has reviewed existing sensors and communications network systems used in U.S. underground coal mines to determine whether they are capable of supporting IIoT systems. The results show that about 40% of the installed post-accident communication systems as of 2014 require minimal or no modification to support IIoT applications. NIOSH researchers also developed an IIoT monitoring and control prototype system based on low-cost microcontroller Wi-Fi boards, to detect a door opening on a refuge alternative, activate fans located inside the Pittsburgh Experimental Mine, and actuate an alarm beacon on the surface. The results of this feasibility study can be used to explore IIoT applications in underground coal mines based on existing communications and tracking infrastructure. INTRODUCTION The nation’s approach to health and safety in mining has historically been reactive in the sense that health and safety regulations and mandates have traditionally been passed as a result of tragic mining accidents. An example of this is the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006, which was passed as a result of several mining accidents where tracking of and communications with underground personnel were severely limited. While this reactive approach has led to the development and implementation of highly impactful safety interventions and safety practices, there currently exists a technological revolution that can shift the paradigm toward a proactive approach based on preventative methods: Internet of Things (IoT). IoT is the network of physical objects or ""things"" embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and connectivity to enable that network to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator, and/or other connected devices [1, 2]. It should be noted that IoT has been defined from various perspectives, and hence numerous definitions exist in the literature. The apparent ambiguity of the IoT definition might be due to the fact that IoT is syntactically composed of two terms: internet and things. The first one pushes towards a network-oriented vision, while the second tends to put the focus on generic objects. The traditional internet can be viewed as an internet of computers —i.e., “things” connected to the internet are computers only. IoT “extends” the internet by allowing other generic things that are commonly found in our daily life, such as refrigerators and cars, to be interconnected via the internet, and thus creates a bridge between the virtual word and the physical world."

The stability of gateroad pillars is crucial in deep-cover longwall mining, especially during transitions to wider panel layouts. This study evaluates the transition from a 700-foot to a 1,000-foot panel layout with an inter-panel barrier in a deep-cover longwall mine in Southwestern Virginia to identify a configuration that enhances stability and reduces operational risks. Using the LaModel program, three pillar configurations were simulated to assess their performance based on stress distributions and pillar safety factors. These included the previously used 4-Entry Yield-Abutment-Yield layout, the current 3-Entry Yield-Abutment layout with a 220-ft inter-panel barrier, and the proposed 3-Entry Yield-Yield layout with a 320-ft inter-panel barrier. The findings of this study suggest that the proposed 3-Entry Yield-Yield pillar layout is more effective in managing stresses in deep-cover mining environments. By optimizing pillar placement and improving load management, this layout could positively impact mineworker safety and health. The study underscores the importance of advanced simulation tools in developing innovative solutions to address the challenges of modern longwall mining operations.

Many remnants of gold exploitation in the Middle Ages were found in the Lower Silesia region. The oldest evidence of such activity was found in the neighborhood of Zloty Stok and comes from the 7th century. Mining of precious and non-precious metal ores has a great relevance in the late Middle Ages when advanced metallurgic technologies were mastered, that allowed to obtain gold, silver, lead, copper, zinc and arsenic from complex ores occurring in the oldest middle part of Sudetes. Historically it concerned the area of the Swidnica Principality and Klodzko County. Experience obtained in Freiberg, which is located close to the Lower Silesia, was used in the development of mining. A high level of mining and metallurgic technology was obtained in the 15th century that caused significant increase of production of the metals mentioned above. Unfortunately, the good time of Lower Silesian mining lasted only up to the 18th century; the notion of preservation of cultural heritage was unknown at that time. The Lower Silesian medieval mines were not in such a fortunate situation as the ?Wieliczka? and ?Bochnia? mines, which are operating to present-day, and which made preservation of the most interesting headings and objects possible. All these objects are now available for visitors. However, in the case of the middle Sudetes it seems that it is often sufficient to localize old shafts and headings on the basis of careful observations and old maps and carry out some earthwork to uncover medieval headings and objects of underground mining activity. They are often preserved in amazingly good state; this also pertains to mining devices. Another issue is of course the permanent preservation of that heritage and its possible availability for re-searchers and tourists. Some success has been achieved in that field (Zloty Stok Gold Mine is a good example), but also problems were encountered in many cases. The Lower Silesian Coal Basin, which has not been exploited for 10 years is an evidence that there is not a holistic conception of mining heritage renovation. Many attractive mining objects disappeared irrecoverably from the mountainous landscape of the Middle Sudetes despite common consciousness of their significance for cultural development of Silesia and other regions.

INTRODUCTION Rapidly increasing capacities of equipment used to load and handle material at the face require improved haulage equipment and better methods of transporting the mined materials or "muck" to the shaft or slope and out of the mine to the processing plant on the surface. Increasingly, those transportation demands are being satisfied with underground belt conveyors. Such con¬veyors provide the most readily available, most efficient, and most reliable method of carrying materials in a continuous and rapid flow from the face loading equip¬ment to the surface plant. Almost universally, belt con¬veyors are used in coal mines and those nonmetallic and metallic mines operating in relatively flat bedded deposits. Belt conveyors are available in a wide range of capacities, mainly limited by belt width, belt speed, and weight of the material to be transported. They can be used on the level, on grades, on the surface, or under¬ground. They provide a rapid and constant flow of material, transporting the material as quickly as it is mined. Length of belt conveyors is almost unlimited. Where the haulage distance exceeds the practical capacity of a single conveyor unit, two or more conveyors can be used in series. Single conveyors more than 1.6 km (1.0 mile) long are common; multiple-unit conveyors in series operation are transporting materials over distances exceeding 16.1 km (10 miles). Depending upon mate¬rials being transported, job conditions, cost of the terrain being spanned, and alternative haulage methods avail¬able, conveyors can be conceivably economical for even greater distances. Table 1 lists maximum belt speeds recommended for most materials, relating belt speeds to belt widths. Table 2 lists capacities of typical conveyors of various widths and speeds, transporting commonly mined mate¬rials of various weights. ADVANTAGES OF CONVEYOR SYSTEMS For several years after their initial introduction, belt conveyors were available only with rigid side frames or a supporting structure of steel and concrete. That con¬struction limited underground applications, due to the cost and relative inconvenience of extending or retract¬ing the belt conveyor in the confined underground environment. However, during the last 20 years, wire-¬rope side-frame belt conveyors, as shown in Fig. 1, have become widely used in underground applications. Even wider use can be anticipated with their application to the fast movement of materials in surface mining operations. Advantages of the wire-rope side-frame belt con¬veyors were realized first in panel or section belt haulage in coal mines. Soon afterward, use of those conveyors was extended to gathering and main-line haulage. The mobility of the wire-rope side-frame conveyor is the principal reason for its success. The conveyor can be extended, retracted, dismantled, moved, and reassembled easily, even in relatively confined under¬ground spaces. The intermediate structure consists of rope support stands, wire-rope side frames, wire-rope tie-off stands, and the necessary carrying idlers and return idlers. An important and very attractive feature is the ability to suspend the conveyor from the roof in an underground mine, as shown in Fig. 2, leaving more room for improved housekeeping and allowing passage of face-service equipment, haulage vehicles, and other mining equipment. The conveyor's open construction allows quick and easy visual inspection of its com¬ponents for failures or malfunctions; it also facilitates checking and correcting conveyor-belt alignment. Other advantages contributing to the attractiveness and widespread application of wire-rope side-frame conveyors in main-line, slope, and surface installations include: lower capital costs, lower installation costs, lower maintenance costs, reduced impact on idlers and belting, reduced spillage and minimal cleanup, improved conformation to undulating terrain or mine bottoms, and the ability to span most obstacles without heavy structural support. CONVEYOR CLASSIFICATIONS Underground belt conveyors are classified normally according to their function. Generally, conveyors are classified into one of four main categories: 1) Panel or section conveyors normally receive the material to be transported directly from the face-haulage equipment. 2) Gathering conveyors are secondary haulage units that usually receive material from two or more panel conveyors. 3) Main-line conveyors transport all the material mined in the underground operations to the slope or shaft. Normally, they receive the material from two or more gathering conveyors. 4) Slope conveyors generally operate in tandem with the main-line conveyor, providing continuous Table 1. That makes all the difference,” said Dee Kippers, of FMI Henderson Mine, in her talk on “Process optimization during a market downturn (A Moly MacGyver story).” Kippers told an entertaining story of the journey she and her team took in tackling the issue of an annual spike in iron content in the product at Freeport- McMoRan’s Henderson primary molybdenum mine near Empire, CO.As the metallurgists tried one thing after another — cranking up the iron depressant, adjusting pH with sodium hydroxide and hydrated lime, modifying reagent levels — Kippers found that when she shared her results with the operators, communicated with them on what she was doing and got their input, they were more willing to work with her, and more understanding and supportive of her efforts.The results make the case for getting people on board and coming together as a team. The cost savings from their optimization efforts, with little capital investment, have been “enough to cover the annual salaries of our metallurgy department and then some,” Kippers said.Considering the environmentDavid Lemieux, of Dundee Sustainable Technologies (DST), talked next on “Cyanidefree process for gold extraction,” presenting the results obtained from a demonstration campaign of the company’s novel chlorination process for gold extraction and associated arsenic stabilization process. Developed at an investment cost of C$35 million, they are ready for commercialization, having been demonstrated on the laboratory, pilot and demonstration scales.The DST process is differentiated from the Plattner chlorination process, which was in use from 1851 to 1916, by moderate process conditions of atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature — the result of using sodium hypochlorite solution, or bleach, instead of direct injection of chlorine gas — and new, cheaper materials of construction, such as polymers, plastics, fiberreinforced plastics and Teflon, resulting in lower capital and operating expenditures."

The purpose of this paper is to present a discussion of the various approaches that can be utilized in the study of mine subsidence phenomena. Attention is focused upon the rational selection and use of laboratory models. Broadly interpreted, mine subsidence is the deformation of the rock mass enclosing the mine. Depending upon a number of factors, the movement of the subsiding rock mass may be such as to disrupt gas and water lines or other buried utilities, to damage surface structures such as buildings and bridges, to dislocate streams, roads, and rail lines, to aggravate acid mine drainage and fire problems, and to generally mar the landscape. It is clearly a problem that no mine manager can safely ignore. It is also a problem that will grow with the general population increase. In the following, a summary review of past and present approaches to subsidence studies is given. The possibilities of duplicating subsidence phenomena in laboratory models are examined, and an analysis of a particular type of model is presented. Some preliminary results obtained from a model of the particular type analyzed are then discussed.

"One of the most common emissions from detonating explosives are nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are potentially deadly if inhaled. Lab studies estimate emission quantities, though great variation is shown based on site-specific conditions, and lab tests may not fully represent field results. Field VALUES (have not been measured due to the vast area affected. OSMRE recently promised to release a ruling regarding surface mine NOx production. Once the ruling is implemented, it may eventually be necessary to monitor site-specific NOx production from blasting. A small unmanned aerial vehicle system (sUAS) is able to carry a NOx gas monitor, rapidly travel to the blast location, and to follow resulting clouds of dust and emission gasses. This project will perform laboratory tests to expand on current estimations, determine an optimal method for collecting data, and evaluate the ability for this unique application of sUAS to assist in health risk assessment for mine employees and nearby communities. Additionally, large initial NOx concentrations do not necessarily correlate to unsafe conditions, and this project will be ground breaking in observance of surface blasting emission dispersion. The project is still in early phases at the time of submission for this paper (Nov 1, 2017). Therefore, this paper focuses primarily on summarizing background research related to the project and a description of the project plan. INTRODUCTION Nitrogen oxide gases (NOx) are common emission by products of surface mine blasting. These gases can potentially cause risk to human health and safety, both for mine workers and communities near the blast site. However, these emission quantities are largely unmeasured and no attempts have been made to relate these VALUES (to human health risk. The primary objectives of this project are to determine actual quantities of emission gases produced during surface blasting, to evaluate immediate and long-term risks to nearby people, communities, and ecosystems, to develop a system for mine employees to easily monitor emission and risk levels, and then provide guidelines for mitigating health risks based on a location’s emission results. BACKGROUND Current research regarding health risk produced by surface mine blasting NOx emissions is extremely lacking. Estimations have been made based on laboratory research, though these same test results show wide ranges of possible gas quantities produced based on site-specific conditions. Even if these estimations are accurate, no method has been created to relate gas quantity produced to human exposure concentrations. To further understand this field, background research was studied pertaining to blasting emission gas formation, laboratory and field measurements, harmful effects of blasting emission gases, and relevant government regulations. A mine fire or roof collapse may necessitate the reversal of main fans to isolate the fire or provide an escapeway. Hence, to assist the mine operator in estimating the flow and pressure during reversal, Engineers International, Inc. conducted a laboratory and field study of the reverse performance characteristics of main mine fans. Laboratory tests were performed using a 96-inch (2.4 m) diameter vane axial fan to establish the forward and reverse performance characteristics under controlled conditions. Subsequently, a field test was conducted in a Colorado oil shale mine during which two 79-inch (2 m) diameter fans were reversed. The data obtained indicate that reverse performance characteristics are dependent upon the blade angle and the hub to tip ratio. The quantity in the reverse mode ranged from 30 to 65% less than in the forward mode, and the static pressure was directly proportional to the square of the quantity.

Newmont has a large integrated operation in Northern Nevada with numerous mines, stockpiles, and processing facilities. There are over ninety defined metallurgical ore types and over sixty defined gold recovery process options. To take better advantage of the available synergies, a complete Nevada wide mine plan and process model along with a mixed Integer and Linear Programming optimization tool has been developed and implemented. This system is maintained and operated by a Nevada Planning Group. Standard in-house planning software tools and methods have been implemented at all mine sites. While increasing the effectiveness of planning in Nevada, these changes have allowed a significant reduction in overall Mine Engineering staff.

Seabed polymetallic nodules, which contain significant quantities of metals key to electrification (nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese) can be processed using several different metallurgical processing options, including direct smelting and subsequent hydrometallurgical refining of the copper/nickel matte, ammoniacal leaching (gas reduction or Cuprion), and acid leaching (often reductive). Many of these approaches suffer from reduced cobalt extraction, difficult physical performance, or overall circuit complexity in general, leading to increased risk to the overall project. SGS has considered pressure acid leaching of nodules for further investigation, as publicly shared data on this processing route stems from the 1970s and 1980s and is not always easily accessible. This paper will detail the series of tests conducted and provide updated results obtained (high Ni/Co/Cu recovery with limited Mn/Fe), as well as comment on the potential treatment options on the product solution and residue.

Gas wells have often intersected mining resources, but unconventional shale well drilling has more recently challenged mines to balance the risk of interaction due to higher pressures and larger quantities of gas. Full extraction mining, such as the longwall method, induces ground movement that may influence the casings if wells are drilled within the mining area. The possibility of a casing shear would lead to the risk of unplanned gas migration into the mine. This has the potential to quickly overcome the ventilation system and reach the explosive range which, if ignited, can have catastrophic consequences on the health and safety of underground workers. The utilization of network software to model mine ventilation is a common practice in the mining industry and can assist with a well breach scenario. This work focuses on a well breach in between two longwall panels after second panel mining with gas entering primarily through the gobs of the adjacent longwall panels. Applying the network software Ventsim, a gob zone and ventilation network were created to better understand the distribution of gas within the mine and the limitations and effectiveness of a ventilation system. The model shows both a transient flow simulation and steady state concentrations throughout the mine ventilation system. Using a standard Pittsburgh coal seam longwall ventilation scheme, we find that the system can dilute a significant inflow of up to 700 cfm of methane.

Column flotation and selective agglomeration are promising advanced physical cleaning processes that can be developed for preparing premium quality coal-water slurry fuel from coal fines. Such a fuel could either replace oil or natural gas in certain industrial and utility boilers or else could be burned in advanced combustors currently under development. These applications require coal cleaned to sulfur and ash contents below 258 g/GJ and 430 - 860 g/GJ (0.6 lb/million Btu and 1 - 2 lb/million Btu), respectively, to meet clean air emission requirements. A highly loaded slurry must be produced in order to avoid derating the boilers, and the total cost of the fuel must be below $2.37/GJ ($2.50/million Btu) in order to penetrate the market by the turn of the century. Achieving these technical and economic goals depend critically on the selection of suitable feed coals. This paper describes the identification and evaluation of 18 coals and final selection of six coals from different regions of the United States as potential feedstock for preparation of premium fuel. The work is being performed under a cost-shared DOE project.

"Pareto analysis was used to investigate the failures database of a Hitachi EX1900 hydraulic shovel over one year of continuous operation. The hydraulic system and hydraulic links, hoses and piping were identified as the most critical system and subsystem, respectively. A three-parameter gamma distribution function was identified as the best fit for a probabilistic modeling of the time between failures (TBFs). This distribution was used in a Monte Carlo reliability analysis of the hydraulic system. Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), within the context of a time series analysis of the TBFs, was proposed as a viable alternative to the traditional technique of distribution fitting. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) metric was used to compare the two models. The MAPE value that resulted from the ARIMA was 66 percent smaller than that from the traditional technique in predicting the TBFs.Resumen ¦ Se usó análisis Pareto para investigar la base de datos de fallas de una pala hidráulica Hitachi EX1900 durante un periodo de un año de operación continua. Esta distribución fue usada en un análisis de confiabilidad Monte Carlo para un sistema hidráulico. El promedio de movimiento integrado auto-regresivo (ARIMA por sus siglas en inglés), dentro del contexto de análisis de serie temporal de los TBFs, fue propuesto como una alternativa viable a la tradicional técnica de ajuste de distribución. Se usó el porcentaje de la media absoluta de error (MAPE) para comparar los dos modelos. "The Netherlands has major resources of sand, gravel and clay, exploited mainly for construction works and the building materials industry. As in most western countries, mineral extraction meets with considerable societal resistance. To this end, Dutch minerals policy aims to prevent extraction by promoting economical use of materials, and the use of alternative (secondary or renewable) materials. Up till recently, it also included a system of production planning to sustain supplies of regionally scarce materials. Dutch policy development is reviewed and discussed in terms of pitfalls and possibilities for mineral planning in general. Promoting secondary substitution has been quite successful, and presents an example. In contrast, the production planning system has been controversial from the start and ineffective as a result, mainly because it attempted to solve supply problems without properly addressing the underlying resistance. Based on the mechanical essence that large-scale plastic failure zone appears in all or part of surrounding rock in soft rock roadway, the numerical simulation method is used to study the rectangular roadway in layered rock strata. It is clarified necessary conditions must be met for soft rock: firstly, the strength condition is that the maximum confining pressure is greater than the uniaxial compressive strength of rock strata. Secondly, the stress environment condition is that the ratio of maximum confining pressure to minimum confining pressure is greater than 3. Thirdly, the angle condition is that The direction of principal stress action enables the plastic zone of weak rock layers to fully develop. At the same time, the quantitative description method of soft rock is given, and the soft rock roadway is redefined. Soft rock roadway refers to the roadway that meets the strength conditions, stress environment conditions, and rock structure angle conditions under certain surrounding rock conditions and in-situ stress environment conditions. After the excavation of the roadway, a large-scale plastic failure can be formed, that is, a butterfly-shaped plastic zone is formed, and the conventional support cannot be adapted. It is difficult to support in engineering. It provides a theoretical basis and engineering analysis method for the identification of soft rock roadway, and the research results have engineering value Soft rock tunnel engineering in coal mines constitutes a vital aspect of soft rock engineering. This field broadly encompasses rock engi- neering concerning large plastic deformations, e.g., soft rock slope engineering and soft rock tunnel engineering. The intricate geological conditions encountered in soft rock tunnel engineering present a significant challenge to support, which has harmed coal production in China. China leads global raw coal production with the annual output of 4.6 billion tons. Annual tunnel excavation supporting this production spans approximately 11,000 km, with over 10% of these tunnels classified as soft rock formations. Soft rock is commonly associated with soft rock tunnels due to their prevalence in engineering projects. However, reaching a consensus on the definition of soft rock has long been an enduring challenge for scholars and engineers. Numerous definitions have been proposed, includ- ing descriptive, index, and engineering definitions. For instance, the International Society for Rock Mechanics defines soft rock based on its uniaxial compressive strength σ ranging from 0.5 to 25 MPa. China's Engineering Rock Body Standards, established in 1994 (GB 50218-94), take a qualitative and quantitative approach to classifying rocks. Rocks are categorized as hard or soft based on criteria such as hammering sound, fragmentation, water immersion effects, and weath- ering degree. Additionally, the integrity of rock bodies is assessed across five categories intact, relatively intact, soft fractured, fractured, and extremely fractured. This classification considers factors like the number and spacing of structural planes, their combination, and the types of structures. Descriptive and index-based definitions fall under the category of geological soft rocks, providing a comprehensive geological perspective on the surface features or strength characteristics. However, these definitions have limitations in engineering practice, which leads to contradic- tions. For instance, rocks with uniaxial compressive strength less than 25 MPa may not exhibit soft rock characteristics if the tunnel is shal- low with low horizontal stress levels. Conversely, rocks with compressive strength exceeding 25 MPa at sufficient depth and high horizontal stress may exhibit soft rock characteristics. Definitions originating from engineering practice have emerged after realizing the inadequacy of discussing soft rocks without considering engineering. For instance, Dong's loose circle theory defines soft rocks as rocks with a loose circle thickness exceeding 1.5 m, which chal- lenges conventional supports. This intuitive definition, widely accepted by engineering professionals, emphasizes the difficulty in supporting tunnels due to extensive damage. However, various tunnel damage poses a challenge in relying solely on the loose circle thickness of tunnels for determining soft rocks. He introduced the concept of engineering soft rocks, which are defined as rock formations exhibiting significant plastic deformations under applied engineering force. Two fundamental mechanical properties of soft rocks are identified the critical softening load and critical soft- ening depth. WIDCO is a surface coal mine located near Centralia, Washington. The WIDCO preparation plant processes over 7 million tons of run- of-mine coal each year with a product yield averaging 72%. In the jig type preparation plant the fine refuse amounts to approximately 130 dry tons per hour of 28mesh by 0. This fine refuse material is thickened in a 160ft. diameter static thickener with the use of lime as a coagulant and organic polymer as a flocculant. Once thickened the fine refuse, which is predominately bentonitic clays, has been dewatered and disposed of using several different methods. These methods will be discussed and include vacuum disc filters, ponds, solid bowl centrifuges, belt filter presses and experiments with electrokinetic dewatering.
