Large surface mining projects in sparsely populated regions of the West have the potential to create disruptions in an area's social and economic character with potential effects on man that can far outweigh the physical and ecological effects on man's environment. The data and analyses involved in addressing the socioeconomic issues are additional to those traditionally associated with surface coal mining, such as those concerning land reclamation and water quality. Appropriate socioeconomic studies in conjunction with mine-planning can identify the potential problem areas in order that project measures can be taken to maximize the beneficial impacts and minimize the adverse effects of surface coal mining. The information required to conduct such socioeconomic analyses, available data sources, and the applicable analyses are described. Overall impacts of some proposed Western surface mines are summarized and potential mitigating steps discussed.

The trapezoidal tapered ring method has made significant progress in recent years for shielded-TBM projects, excavating tunnels with high overburden, strict water tightness criteria, and multiple curve alignments. The selection of compatible tapered rings is critical for successful advancement of the tunnel, assuring efficient installation of rings, as well as prevention of ring damage and excessive leakage. Using experience from the Arrowhead Tunnels Project, this paper describes guidelines for ring selection in tunnel curves, geometric analyses that comply with criteria principals, and provides techniques developed to determine the appropriate relative key position.

"The Deep Ocean Resources Development Co. Ltd. (DORD) of Japan signed a 15-years contract with the International Seabed Authority for exploration of polymetallic nodule in a 75,000 km2 area, consisting of West and East Areas in the Clarion and Clipperton Fracture Zone in 2001. The exploration work is now concentrated in resource estimation of the first generation of mining area, the High Abundance Area.A detail survey of the Model Area, set in the High Abundance Area, was conducted using AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) equipped with MBES (Multi-Beam Echo Sounder), SSS (Side Scan Sonar), Sub-Bottom Profiler (SBP) and still camera. The seafloor topographic map based on 1 m grid data was produced in an area of approximately 80 km2 (Figure 1). Photographs, continuously covering the seafloor taken by AUV along two west-east trending traverse lines, together with detail seafloor topographic map produced from MBES give an excellent opportunity to observe distribution manner of pollymetalic nodule related to topographic features. This helps to understand more accurate resources estimation of a whole area of the High abundance Area. Furthermore, information of micro-topography gives ideas for conducting ore collecting operation and designing ore collector."

Arsenic sulfide [orpiment, realgar, amorphous AsS and As2S3] oxidation rates were measured in mixed flow reactors at pH~2 and temperature of 25-30oC. The measured oxidation rates for arsenic sulfide solids by dissolved oxygen are in the range of 10-11 to 10-10 mole m-2 s-1 after being normalized to final surface area. The order of arsenic sulfide oxidation rates decreases at pH~2 from amorphous AsS > realgar > orpiment > amorphous As2S3. In comparison to pyrite, arsenic sulfide oxidation rates are approximately 1.5 to 15 times slower than pyrite oxidation rates at pH~2.

Sustainability of lignite mining in the Rhenish lignite mining area is ensured by a preceding study of the overall project, with the involvement of all those affected. The supporting holistic consideration of the various sustainability elements is essential for a later balancing of the several ecological, economic and social concerns. In what follows, a brief overview of the Rhenish lignite mining area is given as introduction to the focus of this report, which is on sustainability, starting with the approval procedure under regional planning law incl. opencast mine planning, and extending to concrete on-the-spot implementation, taking the Garzweiler II follow-up mine as example. To illustrate the issues involved, an account is given of some selected sustainability elements.

Introduction Some uranium minerals are paramagnetic and hence are amenable to concentration by high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS). This paper describes effects of the HGMS parameters-pulp velocity, field strength, matrix loading, and magnetic field gradient-on the product recovery and grade. Unsatisfactory separation of uranium minerals by HGMS is related to ore-specific properties, such as lack of liberation, fine dissemination of uranium minerals, uniform distribution of magnetic minerals throughout the ore matrix, and interference of fine-sized slimes. Experimental techniques to identify and resolve some of these problems are outlined. HGMS of Uranium Ores The mechanism by which uranium minerals are attracted to a magnetic field is either due to its magnetic susceptibility or its association with other minerals that are magnetic. Data on magnetic susceptibility of uranium minerals are scarce. The only reported data are for uraninite at 2360 X 10-6 cm3/mole. Povarennykh (Andres, 1976) concluded that the magnetic properties of minerals depend on: • Structure of the outer electron shell in a mineral with electropositive atoms; • Valence of the atoms; • State of the chemical bonds; • Type of coordination; and • Proportion of magnetic atoms (Fe, Mn, Cr, and Ni) in the composition of the mineral. However, information on the magnetic susceptibilities of the constituent atoms of a mineral alone does not suffice for evaluating the mineral compound as a whole. Most often, uranium minerals can be beneficiated by HGMS if they are associated with other minerals that are magnetic. This appears to be a more predominant mechanism by which the uranium minerals are beneficiated. Experimental A Sala-HGMS (Malghan and Subramanian, 1981), model 10-15-20, separator was used in the experiments. The matrix material-ferromagnetic stainless steel in the form of expanded metal or steel wool-was packed into a 38-mm (1.5-in.) diameter by 360-mm (14-in.) long canister. The matrix material occupied only a 150-mm (6-in.) length. The experimental set-up and slurry flow direction are described elsewhere (lannicelli, 1976). The response of uranium ores in the HGMS was studied by feeding well-dispersed slurry at 10% solids and examining the influence of process variables on selectivity and overall uranium recovery. The chemical and mineralogical characteristics of the ores under study are presented in Table 1.

Visible and sometimes audible indications of excessive underground rock pressure such as pillar fracturing, squeezes on chocks, and "roof talk" are familiar to mining engineers. Such signs often precede rock failure on a larger scale and therefore may be used as a warning. Nevertheless, these subjective observations do not provide an adequate means of evaluating the existing rock pressure conditions in a mine. One method which appears to be extremely promising in determining the stability of geologic structures in general is that of monitoring their associated micro seismic activity. Mining engineers generally agree that during the process of rock deformation and failure small-scale seismic ("microseismic") vibrations are produced in the rock itself. These transient vibrations propagate through the rock structure and may be detected at a considerable distance from the failed rock by employing suitable electronic monitoring equipment. Hardy (1) has presented a detailed review of microseismic research in the mining, petroleum, and geoscience areas, and it is apparent that relatively little application of micro seismic techniques have been made in coal mines. This is especially true in North America since here most coal mines are fairly shallow and consequently are not generally subjected to excessive stresses. Furthermore, strict Federal and State mining laws limit the use of electrical equipment in coal mines complicating the use of the necessary monitoring facilities. In terms of both mine safety and economics, monitoring microseismic activity appears to be invaluable in the detection and location of over-stressed pillars and unstable roof conditions caused by development and production work. In 1970 The Pennsylvania State University Rock Mechanics Laboratory became involved in a research project, sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, to investigate the feasibility of using microseismic techniques to detect and to locate potential regions of instability around a longwall coal-mine operation [Hardy and t10wrey (2); Mowrey (3)]. In this study geophones (velocity gages) located in an array of shallow boreholes drilled from the surface above the active area of the longwall were employed to detect microseismic activity, and a mobile micro-seismic monitoring facility was used to condition and record this data for later analysis. This project is unique in that measurements were made from near-surface geophones rather than geophones installed on the mine itself. Two advantages are apparent, namely that (1) there are no electrical limitations on the monitoring system and that (2) mining operations can continue normally because there is no monitoring equipment or cables in the mine.

When a solid-liquid mixture is conveyed through a pipe,' four hydrodynamic conditions may develop depending upon the properties of the transporting medium, the properties of the transported material, the properties of the pipeline and the flow characteristics. They are classified as homogeneous flow, heterogeneous flow, intermediate flow and saltation. Heterogeneous flow, which is the subject of the present analysis, occurs when solid particles are coarse, of high density, and the mean velocity of the flow is relatively low, such that the combination allows the establishment of a pronounced concentration gradient in the cross-section of the pipe. In this type of system the suspended matter does not change the rheological properties of the conveying fluid, and solid and fluid phases behave somewhat separately. In recent years much work has been directed toward gaining more insight into the hydrodynamics of heterogeneous flow (1,2,3,4,5,) However, almost all knowledge obtained is empirical in nature and limited in scope. Much effort has been extended to collect experimental information on the energy losses associated with systems of slurry flow (6-13) The work of Durand and Condolios(14,15) represents one of the most extensive experimentations in this field. Operations at the Sweet Home Mine transformed the mineral specimen industry, not only in the development of new innovative extraction techniques, but also in the fields of sample preparation and marketing. Principally as a result of the activities at the Sweet Home Mine, there is now a better appreciation of minerals and the market they encompass. Individual Sweet Home rhodochrosite specimens have been sold for more than $1 million, with many more in the five- and six-figure dollar range. This article is a review of the Sweet Home operation, with emphasis on its extraction techniques. District history The Sweet Home Mine is located within the Alma mining district in the Mosquito Range of central Colorado, approximately 6 km (3.7 mile) northwest of the town of Alma at the base of the Red Amphitheatre in Buckskin Gulch at an elevation of 3,440 m (11,286 ft). Other nearby mining districts include Climax, Leadville, Breckenridge and London. All are considered part of central portion of the Colorado Mineral Belt (Fig. 1).

Editor’s note: Mining companies doing business in Central Asia, and parts of the developing world, should look for ways to promote community development through the introduction of appropriate technology. This article should be of interest to SME members. It shows sustainable development type projects need not be massive or expensive. Smaller, utilitarian projects are equally valuable to developing communities as they seek to develop their own economic and social infrastructures. Joint Development Associates International (JDA) began humanitarian relief and community development in Central Asia in 1992, following the collapse of the former Soviet Union. Appropriate technology has played an important role in the company’s efforts to assist those segments of society that are most vulnerable to poverty and disease.

Seven pairs of drop and ventilation shafts, between two and nine feet in diameter, will convey combined sewer flow to a 230-foot-deep, 26-foot diameter storage tunnel. This paper will present case histories for each site. Discussion will include functional requirements, program and site access constraints, structural design, geology, the variety of excavation and lining construction methods used, and lessons learned. Noteworthy observations include the importance of assuring competent ground sup-port at the soil-bedrock interface and of achieving tight verticality tolerance using both top-down and raise bore excavation methods.

Regulations, such as the MINER Act of 2006, require the installation of redundant and secondary communication systems to assure that contact can be established with coal miners who may become trapped underground as a result of an event such as a fire, explosion or inundation. For half a century, the orientation towards underground communications has been that more complex systems better serve the coal miner. However, if a goal is to provide for an alternative means of establishing communication between the surface and trapped miners underground, then some of the technology employed should be simple, reliable and cost-effective. Coal mines spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on exploratory drillholes to characterize reserves, sometimes decades ahead of mine development. During the pre-mine planning phases, certain exploratory drillholes could be located and then outfitted with a simple communication link that would remain compatible with the continuing evolution of communication systems. Inexpensive links, whose locations would be accurately recorded, would be exposed by continuous miners during mine entry development, thereby allowing an underground phone to be connected to a surface station in the event of an emergency. A latent network of these communication links could be installed for less than $500 each, minimally affecting drilling and grouting operations, and could be designed to be compatible with many communication devices. This research examines methods and materials for incorporating an embedded communication link during pre-mine exploration drilling, addresses significant factors affecting its implementation, and presents a recommended design. Since mine plans are known to change, the objective is to minimize cost so that, if not used, the investment is minimal for a potential secondary means of communication between the surface and underground workings.

Biological treatment of metals-impacted water using sulfate reduction is a viable means of treatment that has been applied in pilot and full scale at numerous projects. One of the fundamental challenges with this type of treatment is the selection of an appropriate substrate to support the sulfate reduction process long-term. The substrate degradation products provide a carbon source and an electron donor for metabolism by sulfate-reducing bacteria and consequently organic characteristics are critical; however, the physical attributes of the substrate are equally critical to an efficient and optimized substrate mix. This paper explores the affect of particle size (a.k.a. grain size) of several substrate mixes on the treatment efficiency of sulfate reducing treatment systems. Substrate selection can be separated into two phases of evaluation, the primary selection phase and the secondary optimization phase. The primary selection phase considers such fundamental attributes as source availability, economics, bioavailability and longevity. These fundamental activities are conducted in order to identify potential candidate ingredients of the substrate mix which are regionally available, economically viable and consistent with the biogeochemical aspects of the project. Recent work has been conducted in the development of testing protocol for organic substrates to quantify bioavailability (Martinez Hernandez et al. 2010, Place et al. 2006) as part of the primary selection phase. Once the substrate ingredients have been selected based on the primary criteria, the mixture of these ingredients is then developed based on an optimization process, including consideration of the substrate ingredient?s particle size distribution.

Ten years ago, only 3% of Consol's underground coal production resulted from using the longwall mining method. Today, that figure has grown to 45% and has helped the Pittsburgh-based concern fuel an upswing in productivity. The company reported that productivity at its underground mines, excluding labor strike periods, increased 24% between 1978 and 1981. Last year, an additional 8% increase was achieved. Efforts such as improved safety, training, engineering, and maintenance programs as well as the closing of unproductive mines has contributed to these gains, according to Joseph M. Richards, Consol's executive vice president of operations. But, Richards adds, a great part of the credit goes to longwall mining. What is Longwall Mining? To fully appreciate the advantages of longwall, one needs an understanding of how mining is done by other methods. For instance, in both conventional and continuous mining, rooms or tunnels are dug in the coal seam. Pillars of coal are left standing to support the roof as mining moves forward in the seam. In conventional mining, a slot is cut in the base of the seam and holes for blasting are drilled. After blasting, the coal is loaded. A more efficient method - continuous mining - uses a machine that combines cutting and loading. Longwall mining, by contrast, works backwards from the end of a panel. Two parallel sets of tunnels (development panels) are cut into a seam with continuous mining machines, then connected with a set of crosscuts at the far end. Min¬ing then proceeds back toward the entrance. Longwall mining employs some very productive machines. Large drum shearers, for example, run on a track along the length of the coal face for some 150-180 m (500-600 ft). The shearers cut the coal which falls onto a conveyor system or pan that also runs the entire length of the face. The longwall crew works under a roof of heavy steel supports called shields. As the coal is removed, shearers, pans, and shields are moved forward by hydraulic rams. The roof is allowed to collapse behind the shields. In addition to increasing production, longwall mining is considered to be safer because the miners work under strong steel shields. New designs have made them more rugged and maintenance free, as well as more stable on soft mine floors. Early roof supports, called chocks, had gaps in the roof canopies. The new roof shields now cover the entire working area and are better able to prevent roof material from falling into the working area, thereby improving safety and productivity. The calculation of the dose to the bronchial epithelium, lungs and other body tissues from exposures to airborne radon and thoron daughters requires a knowledge of the pattern of deposition in the respiratory system and clearance from it. Exposure to radon or thoron daughters is measured in units of Working Level Months (WLM), which is independent of the aerosol particle size, the fraction of daughters that are attached to the aerosol and the degree of disequilibria between the daughters, and age and breathing rate of the subject. These factors will influence the deposition and clearance, and hence dose. It is therefore of interest to find the relationship between WLM and calculated dose as a function of aerosol size, unattached fraction, and disequilibria, and of age and breathing rate, and to define ranges for these parameters for which WLM is an acceptable measure of the risk. This presentation briefly reviews the two dosimetry models being considered by a current Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD) Working Group, and using these models, defines limits on parameters for which the WLM is applicable.

The general application of memory cutting technology to shearers is improving the intelligence of the working face, but it has its limitations. It is only suitable for conditions where the environment of coal seam is changing slowly. It compensates for the cutting height by changing the fuselage attitude, and frequently adjusts the height to control the learning cutting trajectory, but due to the problems of shearer control and height adjustment accuracy, it cannot adapt to and compensate for the change of cutting height in a timely manner, resulting in poor cutting accuracy. "Float dust deposits in coal mine return airways pose a risk in the event of a methane ignition. Controlling airborne dust prior to deposition in the return would make current rock dusting practices more effective and reduce the risk of coal-dust-fueled explosions. The goal of this U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health study is to determine the potential of open-air water sprays to reduce concentrations of airborne float coal dust, smaller than 75 µm in diameter, in longwall face airstreams. This study evaluated unconfined water sprays in a featureless tunnel ventilated at a typical longwall face velocity of 3.6 m/s (700 fpm). Experiments were conducted for two nozzle orientations and two water pressures for hollow cone, full cone, flat fan, air atomizing and hydraulic atomizing spray nozzles. Gravimetric samples show that airborne float dust removal efficiencies averaged 19.6 percent for all sprays under all conditions. The results indicate that the preferred spray nozzle should be operated at high fluid pressures to produce smaller droplets and move more air. These findings agree with past respirable dust control research, providing guidance on spray selection and spray array design in ongoing efforts to control airborne float dust over the entire longwall ventilated opening. IntroductionCoal mining processes produce airborne dust that naturally deposits on the floor, roof and ribs of mine airways. These fine dust particles, termed float coal dust when smaller than 75 µm in diameter, are deposited in the return entries of coal mines and can be reentrained by pressure waves induced by methane-air explosions (Rice et al., 1911; Nagy, 1981; U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), 2006). These particles are also those most likely to participate in coal-dust-fueled explosions, which can potentiate and propagate explosions resulting in extensive damage. In order to meet compliance requirements of at least 80 percent incombustible content in the composition of material deposited in mine entries (U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), 2016), coal mines apply an inerting agent, specifically, rock dust (Harris et al., 2009). Should methane be present in the mine atmosphere, the required fraction of incombustible content is further increased by 0.4 percent for each 0.1 percent methane. The removal of airborne float coal dust (AFCD) prior to deposition is an approach intended to make current rock dusting practices more effective by increasing the proportion of inert material to combustible material, resulting in a lower risk of coal-dust-fueled explosions."

For measuring the level and environmental mining sustainability nature to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the world’s second largest salt mine “Khewra,” Folchi and Phillips environmental sustainability mathematics (PESM) models are applied. The results indicated that Khewra was deemed to be potentially sustainable for the environment and quality of salt. The results suggest the delicate balance of maintaining sustainability successfully, regarding the mining process in Pakistan which has been affecting the local environment and community so badly. The North Auckland Line (NAL) in Northland, New Zealand, is being upgraded to pass Hi-Cube containers. The line includes many tunnels and bridges which need to be refurbished to improve structural clearances and line capacity. Tunnel 2 along the line, the Makarau Tunnel, has posed special challenges. Opened in 1898, the tunnel suffered multiple collapses during construction and has shown significant distortion during operation. The tunnel has been repaired many times since opening. Successfully enlarging this delicate and distressed structure has involved historical research, advanced analysis and design, and careful construction. The results provide lessons for dealing with brick lined tunnels and poor ground conditions
