In block cave mining, rock fragmentation is a key parameter that influences the production level design and mine planning. Fragmentation occurs mainly by natural breakage during the caving process and in the draw column. The breakage that occurs within the column is known as secondary fragmentation. Secondary fragmentation has been successfully described using the block caving comminution model, which replicates the fragmentation mechanics between particles under drawn and vertical loads in a draw column. This model is based on a kinetic and population balance approach, in which non-normalized and normalized assumptions can be used depending on material and comminution system behaviour. In this paper, the non-normalized and normalized approaches are applied and compared to laboratory data to determine which assumption should be used for secondary breakage in block caving. Approaches are compared graphically, with the mean square error and the Fisher test with a false-rejection probability of 0.05. Based on a statistical analysis, the results show that the normalized model can be applied to all the rock types tested.

The choice of which mining method to use at many large surface coal mines is often dicated by what machinery is available or what experience the mine management can offer. One of the most significant surface coal mines in Turkey is owned and operated by the Turkish National Coal Board, located to the west of the city of Kütahya. The Seyitömer Lignite Enterprise (SLE) extracts low quality coal, the majority of which is supplied to an adjacent power station. The coal seems at SLE contain bands of ash which under normal mining conditions are extracted with the coal. This increases the ash content of the run of mine coal and results in lower efficiency at the power station and financial penalties for SLE. In this paper, therefore, selection of the best possible equipment and production method was identified to achieve high selective mining at SLE. The research found that two different high selective mining methods were suitable for selective excavation of the B3 seam, which were hydraulic excavator and truck and surface miner and truck combinations. It was also found that high selective excavation could provide the desired coal quality at 52% lower costs when the whole process (excavation, transportation, processing, etc.) was considered. The quest for efficiency in comminution is an ongoing concern as comminution usually constitutes a major cost component in the metal production industry. Such improvements can be made by circuit optimization or development of more efficient equipment. A novel crusher, known as the rotary offset crusher (ROC), promises to deliver in this space. The ROC was invented in 2002 by Michael Hunt, Henry Simonsen, and Ian Sinclair, but failed to garner enough support to progress to production. The original design concept was recently rekindled, and a laboratory version of the crusher has been built and commissioned at the University of the Witwatersrand. The crusher is simple in design, with two cylindrical discs that are parallel to each other, and, as the name implies, there is an offset between the vertical axes of the discs. The top disc has a conical section on its lower face, and this creates a crushing zone between the opposite faces of the two spinning discs. Centrifugal motion transports particles through the crushing zone. Batch experiments have been conducted with quartz at various crusher settings (discs offset, rotational speed, and vertical exit gap) for various feed size distributions. The indications so far suggest that the disc speed is a key factor affecting the performance. Size reduction ratios as high as 11 were recorded from experiments with quartz at a speed of 830 r/min.

A recent experimental pillar extraction project at a UG2 bord-and-pillar mine presented a unique opportunity to compile a new pillar database. Currently, the South African hard rock bordand- pillar mines are designed using the Hedley and Grant formula with a modified K-value. This empirically derived formula was developed for uranium mines in the Elliot Lake district of Canada. The use of this formula for the design of pillars in South Africa is questionable. Very few pillar failures have nevertheless been observed and its current calibrations for the various reef types are possibly too conservative. A new UG2 pillar database of 66 pillars, of which seven are classified as failed, was compiled by the authors. This enabled a revised ‘first-order’ calibration of the K-value for the Hedley and Grant formula. The new estimated value for the UG2 is K = 75 MPa. This gives a pillar strength that is more conservative than the PlatMine formula. This work should nevertheless be considered as only a preliminary calibration as the database was small. Further work is also required to determine whether the exponents in the formula for the width and height parameters are appropriate for UG2 pillars.

This paper identifies the need for the development of specialized inverse solution techniques for the analysis of pressure transient data for the characterization of the transport and sorption properties of coal seams. Central to the proposed inverse solution technique is a specially structured artificial neural network (ANN). The most important transport and sorption characteristics of coal seams are butt and face cleat permeabilities, macropore porosity, Langmuir volume constant, Langmuir pressure constant, and sorption time constant. Conventional methods, such as type curve matching techniques and laboratory-derived measurements are handicapped in terms of being representative over the entire domain of interest. In this paper, we utilize analytical forward solution techniques for various combinations of characteristics of coal seams to generate training and testing patterns. These training patterns are shown to an ANN structured to learn the ubiquitous non-linear relationships that exist between coal seam properties, input conditions and the pressure transients measured. The trained networks are then extensively tested to ensure that they have effectively learned the training patterns. In the final stage of the development, the networks are run in the prediction mode. The responses of the networks are found to be in agreement with the input data. The developed networks are able to generate results generally within 5% error margin for permeability and porosity and 20% error margin for the sorption characteristics of coal seams. A number of examples highlighting the capabilities and degree of effectiveness of the network in characterizing the coal seams areincluded. The Namibian Copper Joint Venture has been formed to undertake development of the Haib copper deposit, one of the largest undeveloped copper resources in Africa. The development programme includes extensive hydrometallurgical testwork that is being managed by Kvaerner Metals (formerly Davy International).Various parts of the programme have been contracted to four third-party laboratories. The testwork involves sample selection and characterization, amenability tests, and a parametric study on the leaching variables. All portions of the programme are described and the results a represented. The ores selected for testing are quartz feldspar porphyries. The amenability tests include ?mapping? studies to assess optimum leach conditions, tests at high oxidation potentials, oxidation with various bacterial strains, and heap leach modelling. The parametric programme includes such variables as ore grade, leach temperature, crush size, pH, and ferric iron content of the lixiviant. Testing was done on both whole ore and concentrate. Results show that bacterial leaching is effective and that ore grade and temperature are key variables. Crush size and pH have less impact on copper extraction. For mid-grade ore, about 0.25 per cent copper, extraction is projected to reach 50 per cent after two years when heap leaching tertiary crushed ore at 60°C and pH 1.5. The heap leach operation would fit well with the proposed roast-leach operation used to treat higher grade ores. The latter could supply the low cost heat and acid needed in the heap leach.

With increasing demand for real-time monitoring of mine parameters, the requirement for appropriate data management in many mining applications is also increasing. This includes atmospheric monitoring in underground coal and metal mines. Although a number of different (real-time) monitoring systems have been installed in underground mines, they all typically share the same systems or sub-systems, where each sub-system may include both custom hardware and / or software components. In addition, monitoring components installed in underground coal mines in the USA should also be intrinsically safe and approved by the US Mine Safety and Health Administration. Real-time analysis adds complexity to the system since data validation and storage should be completed independently of filtering, data reduction operations, or visualization. Real-time processing may include statistical evaluation, trending, cross-correlation, and real-time alarm or warning generation. This paper presents the concept and design of an integrated system under development for atmospheric monitoring in US coal mines.

This article is a continuation of a series of publications by the authors on the international debate on resource nationalism, with specific reference to South Africa. Previous outcomes have shown that mine nationalization is not a solution for South Africa, and that maintaining stability of the current mineral and tax regimes is fundamental. It will not be wise to replace existing law and policy instruments until there is a better understanding of the distinction between fact and public perception about the impact of the current system. The new scheme of state custodianship linked to a mining royalty that effectively targets economic rents provides for effective resource use. The methodology in this article is to consider how South Africa's mineral tax regime can be tweaked to achieve optimal management and benefit from mineral extraction and associated rents by avoiding changes feared by investors. The major finding is that the current suite of instruments can be considered a suitable platform for optimal management of resource rents. However, it will be necessary to first investigate ways of improving the mineral beneficiation intent of the royalty structure, and secondly investigate whether the mineral rent portion of the royalty formula can be ring-fenced for the purpose of establishing a sovereign wealth fund.

Fine phosphate feed is considered to be slime and normally disposed of as a discard in settling ponds or dumped as landfill. The purpose of this research was to establish whether commercially acceptable qualities and yields could be obtained from this material using dry separation methods. The results obtained from the electrostatic separation of <105 µm phosphate ore are presented. An existing separator was upgraded in order to improve on product and flotation concentrate recovery, to test different mineral, and to reduce particle residence time between the charging chamber and the separating zone of the separator. The operating conditions were varied according to the charges imparted to the particles in the electric field, and according to other device parameters. Parameters such as splitter position, charge reversal, rotation speed, charging voltage and separating voltage. The <105 µm phosphate feed was concentrated under both triboelectrification and inductive charging. The use of inductive charging and charge reversal resulted in a significant increase in grade for <105 µm phosphate feed, with the P205 grade increasing from about 12 per cent to 20.50 per cent, and a recovery of 26.30 per cent under a single stage of separation. It was found that better separation was achieved at rotation speed of 6000 r/min, -8 kV charging voltage, and 25 kV separating voltage.

Mine water in the Upper Olifants River Catchment in Mpumalanga(upstream of Loskop Dam) is at times discharged into local streams, resulting in local acidification and regional salination of surface water resources. Pollution of surface water can be prevented by collecting and treating mine water to a quality where it could be re-used without restriction (Cleanwater 2020 Initiative). Mine water in the Olifants River Catchment currently amounts to only 4,6% of the total water usage, but contributes 78,4% of the sulphate load. Limestone and lime treatment is the most cost-effective technology for neutralization and partial sulphate removal of acidic/sulphate-rich water to sulphate levels of less than 1500 mg/l due to precipitation of magnesium and removal of the associated sulphate fraction (through gypsum crystallization). Neutralized mine water of this quality may be suitable for irrigation. A number of alternative desalination treatment technologies were investigated (subsequent to gypsum crystallization pre-treatment) where treated mine water must meet more stringent quality requirements (e.g. less than 200 mg/lSO4). The capital cost of these processes varied between R4 million/(Ml/d) and R10million/(Ml/d) and the running cost between R2/m3and R5/m3. Water usage in the Upper Olifants River Catchment currently amounts to 947 Ml/d (including the power stations), and will increase to an estimated 1385 Ml/d by 2020. The additional water demand by2020 (438 Ml/d) will have to be supplied by importation from neighbouring catchments, and more efficient utilization of the local water resources, including excess mine water. Various levels of treatment are required to make mine water suitable for the following potential applications (acceptable treated water sulphate concentration shown in brackets): irrigation (2000 mg/l), coal processing plant (1000 mg/l), general industrial use (500 mg/l), discharge to public streams (500 mg/l), potable use (200 mg/l) and cooling water in power stations (20 to 40 mg/l). The following two options, or a combination thereof, can be considered for management of excess mine water in the Upper Olifants River Catchment: ?Collection and treatment of excess mine water to a quality suitable for selected urban and industrial applications (Option A) ?Collection and treatment of mine water to a quality suitable for irrigation (Option B). The estimated capital and running cost for Option A amounts to R528.5 million and R55.7 million/year, respectively, compared with R68,2 million and R11,9 million/year for Option B. It is recommended that Option B be investigated for implementation in the short to medium-term. Option B was selected due to cost benefits and the initial favourable results obtained by a joint Water Research Commission and Coal Industry initiative where mine water is used for irrigation. Option A may become feasible in the long-term to ensure maximum environ-mental protection and reduced treatment cost as a result of anticipated technological improvements over the next 5 to 10 years.

Deep level block caving as a mining method is becoming more popular due to the fact that it is the lowest cost per ton underground extraction system. However, many block caves do not achieve their full potential due to draw horizon instability. In this paper five design rules are given to overcome this problem. The design rules described are applicable for slusher and trackless block caves where the operational depths exceed 500 metres.

A new method, localized uniform conditioning (LUC), was proposed in 2006 for modelling grades of small blocks of ore when data spacing is too broad for their accurate modelling by the linear regression based techniques, such as kriging (Abzalov, 2006). It represents a modified uniform conditioning (UC) technique that calculates the grade distribution functions for the large panels. LUC uses partitioning of the panels onto the small blocks and then ranks them in increasing order of grade. Based on the block ranks, a single grade value can be deduced for each block from the UC model of the gradetonnage relationships of the corresponding panel. After being first presented in 2006, the LUC method has been implemented in ISATIS© (commercial software) and became one of the common approaches for grade estimation when data spacing is broad in comparison with the estimated block size. Several years of study on the LUC method and its application to different geological environments, have allowed identification of the strengths and weaknesses of the method, which are as follows: ? The method produces accurate grade-tonnage functions, which are in a good accordance with a volume-variance relationship principles ? An initial ranking of the selective mining unit (SMU) blocks can be made by direct kriging from the sparse data grid. Therefore, the LUC method can be particularly useful at the early stages of exploration and mining project evaluations when sparsely distributed data is often the only available information ? Accuracy of the local estimation depends on the SMU ranking techniques. When ranking performed by direct kriging of the SMU blocks their spatial distribution is approximate. When the variogram of the studied variable is characterized by a large nugget effect, the block ranks produced by kriging can significantly differ from their ?true? distribution ? Block ranking can be improved using auxiliary data, either geophysical or geochemical. This allows use of the LUC method for integrating different data sets. In particular, LUC can be used for grade control in open pits by integrating resource definition data (e.g. drill-hole assays) and blast-hole assays. The latter are used for the block ranking.

The influence of solution treatment on the phase evolution and tensile properties of Ti-Mo alloys was investigated to assess their potential use in biomedical applications. Phase formation and microstructural evolution were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The mechanical properties were characterized by means of tensile tests and bending strength. XRD analysis showed that solution treatment increased the volume fraction of β phase and supressed the α" phase. The microstructures of the as-cast alloys consisted of β equiaxed grains with sub-grain structures of different sizes, while the solution treated alloys comprised β equiaxed grains only except for Ti- 10.02Mo, which comprised needle-like α" structures. EBSD showed an increase in the volume fraction of the ω and α" phases in all the alloys after solution treatment. The elastic modulus and UTS of all the alloy significantly decreased after solution treatment, except for Ti-15.05Mo,whereas the elongation significantly increased. The fracture surfaces of all the alloys after solution treatment indicated more ductile behaviour than brittle

The aim of this investigation was to study the influence that varying production rates have on iron sinter quality. This was done by performing sinter pot tests at different pressure drops over the sinter bed, namely 11 kPa and 15 kPa (for 500 mm total bed depths). During each of the sintering processes temperature-time profiles were recorded of the top, middle and bottom layers of the sinter bed. On completion of the sinter process the sinter cakes were divided into top, middle and bottom layers. The physical properties of each layer were subsequently characterized by performing a tumbler test and a sieve analysis. A comprehensive mineralogical study was also conducted on each layer. This study revealed that sinters of similar cold strength could be produced under the examined production rates. However, a higher production rate was accompanied by an increased amount of fines. The cold strengths of both sinters significantly increased from the top layer to the bottom layer of the sinter bed. This strength variation is not related in any simple way to the phase composition. ABSTRACT: Settlements above fractured crystalline rock masses are rarely observed and in the past, geotechnical engineers would not expect substantial subsidence to occur in association with a deep tunnelling project. However, recent high precision levelling measurements along the Gotthard pass road in central Switzerland, have revealed up to 12 cm of subsidence along sections that pass several hundred metres above the Gotthard highway tunnel. Large-scale consolidation resulting from tunnel drainage and pore pressure changes in the rock mass are believed to be the contributing mechanism. This paper presents results from an extensive numerical modelling study focussing on the processes responsible for this subsidence. Results derived from 2-D discontinuum (i.e. distinct-element) and continuum (i.e. finite-element) modelling show that both discrete fracture deformation (i.e. fracture closure and shear) and poro-elastic consolidation of the intact rock matrix equally contribute to the observed magnitudes and shape of the surface subsidence trough. RÉSUMÉ: Des tassements aux dessus de massifs cristallins sont rarement observés et par le passé les géotechniciens ne prévoyait pas de subsidence significative associée avec des projets de tunnel profond. Cependant, de récentes campagnes de nivellement haute précision le long de la route du Col du Gotthard (Suisse centrale), ont mis en évidence des subsidences atteignant 12 cm sur des sections passant plusieurs centaines de mètres au-dessus du tunnel routier du Gotthard. Le mécanisme invoqué pour expliquer ce phénomène est la consolidation à grande échelle due au drainage du tunnel et aux variations de pression de pore dans le massif rocheux. Cet article présente les résultats d’une modélisation numérique intensive mettant l’accent sur les processus responsables pour la subsidence. Ces résultats obtenus grâce à des modèles 2-D discontinus (p. ex. éléments distincts) et continus (p. ex. éléments finis) montrent que la déformation sur des fractures discrètes (fermeture de fractures, cisaillement) ainsi que la consolidation poro-élastique de la roche intacte contribuent également aux magnitudes et aux géométries de subsidence observée en surface. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Beachtliche Oberflächensenkungen in einem kristallinen Gebirge, deren Ursache im Vortrieb eines mehrere hundert Meter tiefgelegenen Tunnels liegt, wurden bisher nicht erwartet und beobachtet. Dennoch wurden nach dem Bau des Gotthardstrassentunnels, entlang der Gotthardpassstrasse Oberflächensenkungen mit einem Maximalbetrag von 12 cm bei der Auswertung von Präzisions-Nivellements entdeckt. Dieser Maximalbetrag wurde in einem granitischen Gneis gemessen. Die örtliche Übereinstimmung zwischen dem maximalem Senkungsbetrag und dem maximalem Wasserzufluss zum Tunnel, und die zeitliche Abfolge von Tunnelbau und auftretenden Oberflächensenkungen lassen hydromechanisch gekoppelte Prozesse als Ursache dieser Gebirgsverformungen vermuten. In dieser Arbeit werden die Ergebnisse ausgedehnter prozessorientierter numerischer Simulationen präsentiert. Resultate aus den 2-D Diskontinuum (d.h. distinct-element) und Kontinuum (d.h. finite element) Simulationen zeigen, dass beide Verformungsmechanismen, d.h. an diskreten Brüchen und der intakten Gesteinsmatrix, gleichbedeutend für die beobachteten Senkungsbeträge und der Form des Setzungstroges verantwortlich sind.

A survey of 120 recent NI 43-101 technical reports was conducted to evaluate the current state of practice regarding resource classification techniques. The most common classification techniques are based on search neighbourhoods (50% of recent reports), drill-hole spacing (30% of recent reports), and/or kriging variance (6% of recent reports). Two new techniques are proposed. The first is based on kriging variance and involves removing one or more drill-holes with the highest weights while performing kriging and using the resultant kriging variance for classification. This technique has the advantages of variance-based techniques and reduces artifacts. The second technique is based on conditional simulation and uses a moving window approach for classification at the desired selective mining unit resolution based on larger production volume criteria. This technique has the advantage of accounting for heteroscedasticity, which is a common characteristic in mineral deposits, and also reduces artifacts since a production volume scale is considered for the actual classification. The drill-hole spacing, search neighborhood, kriging variance, and simulation-based techniques are described and compared for 2D and 3D examples with regular and irregular drilling patterns to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

"A downward trend in tyre life on haul trucks at an open pit iron ore mine prompted an investigation into the current tyre management strategy in order to improve tyre life. ‘Best practice’ was compared to the current tyre management strategy at the mine to determine aspects that could be improved. Aspects that showed significant room for improvement included employee tyre awareness, tyre pressure maintenance, and road conditions. For each of these aspects a plausible alternative was suggested.A new tyre management strategy was formulated as a step-by-step guide on how to implement the proposed changes. Each step introduces new initiatives but at the same time builds on the previous step’s success. A sensitivity analyses was performed to determine the impact of the proposed changes, with the variables being the reduction in the percentage of premature tyre failure, and the reduction of the site wear rate.The ‘most likely’ scenario showed an increase in tyre life of 41% for the Komatsu 730 trucks and 105% for the CAT 777 trucks if the entire tyre management model is implemented. This would result in a possible annual saving related to tyre usage of R9.2 million. OverviewThe study focused on the tyre life on the main haul fleet at an open pit iron ore mine. The haul fleet consisted of 17 Komatsu 730 (180 t) haul trucks and 12 CAT 777 (90 t) haul trucks.The haulage operation consists entirely of tyre-based haul trucks. Five per cent of the total mining budget is related to tyre costs. Since 2012 there has been a steady decrease in tyre life as measured in operating hours (Figure 1) due to the high percentage of tyres that fail prematurely. In 2014 a total of 41% of all tyres failed prematurely and 61% were classified as ‘worn out’."

Resin bolting in South Africa has been developed and refined in underground coal mines (i.e., soft rock) since the late 1940s. The extension of resin bolting to hard rock mines started in 2003 and has required significant adaptations, challenging the status quo from both a supplier and applicator perspective. As far as resin bolting is concerned, the most affected aspect in coal mining and hard rock mining environments, is the rock drills or machinery used for installation. Hard rock mines mostly use hand-held airlegs with limited thrust, low torque, and rotation speed, relative to coal mine mechanised bolters. Resin bolt development for hard rock mines was, and still is today, predominantly focussed on compensating for the ‘shortfalls’ of using hand-held airlegs. At face value, hydro-powered rock drills, which are more powerful than traditional handheld equipment, provided hard rock mines with a means to attain more consistent and reliable resin bolt installations. This paper assesses the quality and performance of hydro-powered resin bolting at an intermediate to deep level platinum mine in South Africa and its potential contribution to rock-related instabilities when applied erroneously. The findings of this paper necessitate a revision of current quality control and quality assurance measures related to resin bolting for underground support.

Scenario reduction is designed for selecting a representative subset of geostatistical simulations out of a much larger set. Three steps are involved: measuring the dissimilarity between two simulations; finding a metric to measure the distance between any subset of k simulations and the full set of N simulations; and finding an efficient algorithm for selecting the subset that minimizes the metric. This paper focuses on the third question. We show that genetic algorithms are an efficient way of approaching the minimum when the population of subsets to be sampled is large. Two case studies based on the Walker Lake data-set are presented: firstly choosing k=4 simulations out of a total of 100, and secondly choosing 20 out of the same 100 simulations. In the first case it was possible to compute all possible combinations exhaustively and hence to demonstrate that the algorithm converges to the true minimum. This was not possible in the second case. Instead we demonstrate that it outperforms the random draw algorithm used in earlier work. A procedure for tracking individual selections during the iterative procedure was developed. This allows us to measure the evolution in the percentage of progeny resulting from crossing-over and from mutation that survived in the next generation. It gives valuable insight into how to choose the parameter values in the algorithm. Another key finding is that there is a trade-off between the number of individuals per generation and the number of generations required for the algorithm to converge.
