Critical to understanding and controlling phase mixing and separation in metallurgical processes, is the development of reliable experimental techniques to measure interfacial properties of melt systems. A series of experiments has been carried out to determine the effect of oxygen potential on the surface tension of liquid copper. Using an electromagnetic levitation method, a surface tension-oxygen chemical potential adsorption isotherm was produced for the Cu-O system at T 1400 K. The surface tension results show good agreement with the literature values e.g. within 3 per cent for pure copper. The Belton `ideal' adsorption isotherm was applied, and the following equation derived to best fit the experimental data ? =1251-77.5 1n41+ (2.79x105 . pO1/2)](mN.m Using this equation, the surface tension of copper was calculated/predicted as a function of oxygen potential at 1400 K, and showed excellent agreement with the experimental values. This confirmed that the adsorption behaviour of oxygen in liquid copper is ideal. The saturation coverage of oxygen on the surface of liquid copper was determined to be T0 = 6.65 µmoles.m,-2 corresponding to an area per adsorbed oxygen atom of ao ? 25 Å2. These values agree well with those cited in the literature, and our experimental data cover a very wide range of oxygen potential (10-5 to 10-17 atm). Electrical impedance tomographic methods have been applied to a variety of mineral and chemical processes in the laboratory and on plant. This review paper surveys technical developments in measurement methods to enable quantitative extraction of key process information in the form of mapping of concentration profiles, mixture homogeneity and suspension velocity. The methods for determining velocity are summarized, since this is of especial interest when applied to opaque systems where most conventional optically based measurements fail. A recent significant development is the use of ultra-high speed measurement that now allows velocity vectors to be extracted for fast moving mixtures and fluids (up to several metres per second). New data are reported pertinent to low and high solids concentration flow in pipelines. Use of the methods offer improvements to design of such systems but also points to the use of tomographic electrical sensor as online flow measurement and fault detection. This offers new opportunities for applications and benefits in the design and monitoring of mineral slurries and sludges.

It is known that the CaO-FetO-P2O5slag system has a wide liquid miscibility gap at steelmaking temperatures and this two-liquid slag phase has many advantages such as high activities of both FetO and CaO and high amount of P2O5. The phosphorus distribution ratio between the two-liquid slag and molten steel was confirmed to be higher than that between CaOsat.-FetO-P2O5slag and molten steel. The two-liquid slag may be useful for dephosphorization of molten steel and reduction of slag volume. Furthermore, the phase equilibrium of two-liquid CaO-FetO-P2O5slagsaturated with MgO was measured to determine the applicability of the two-liquid slag to dephosphorization in steelmaking process. Casting, cooling and crushing/sieving of ferroalloys has followed a well-established pattern in the whole ferroalloys industry for many years. Usually liquid metal or alloys are cast into flat open moulds of various shapes and forms, and after solidification the product is removed from such mould to further cool down to a temperature where subsequent handling steps are feasible. Common to all mechanical product fractioning is the generation of dust and fine size material with lower product value. For almost 10 years, Bécancour Silicon has investigated alternative roads to improve technology and/or reduce or solve problems related to those disadvantages. Since 1995 Bécancour Silicon operates a special silicon granulation plant targeted to product for the chemical treatment/conversion of silicon for silicones production. Prior to the development of the granulation process, various systems had been evaluated, among others the vibrating casting bed, now in operation elsewhere but judged inappropriate because of the tapping volumes to be handled at Bécancour Silicon and other disadvantages. After evaluation of all aspects of heat transfer, radiation, and conductivity in relation to transfer media and within the product, a novel system was designed and built.

PK2 Ventilation shaft is part of Paardekraal No 2 twin shaft system that is being developed to replace depleting Merensky reef production at Paardekraal shaft complex. The sinking team at this shaft faced considerable challenge of improving the total sinking cycle in order to be able to deliver the fully equipped shaft on time and on schedule. The cladding support cycle was identified as the tedious and time consuming activity in the overall shaft sinking operation. Reduction in the time required for handling and setting up the support installation equipment, and the time required for subsequent installation of the necessary support has a direct impact on the overall cycle time, and consequently the overall productivity and efficiency of the sinking operation. This reduction in support cycle was achieved by making use of machine carousel. The objective of this paper is to describe the support methodology that was used during the ventilation shaft sinking and the use of the machine carousel to reduce the cladding support cycle. The machine carousel replaces the traditional use of machine kibble in conventional vertical shaft sinking and has been designed specifically for installation of sidewall support at the shaft bottom during the sinking process.

"An investigation into pillar cutting was carried out at a platinum mine on the western limb of the Bushveld Complex. The focus was on crush pillar design and implementation in order to ultimately improve the compliance percentage for pillar cutting. The major findings from the investigation suggest that the pillar cutting problem lies with the implementation of the design rather than the design itself. Observations of the practical issues underground that prevent good pillar cutting were made. After these issues had been identified, recommendations to rectify these problems and a few other issues identified during the investigation were provided. The recommendations are aimed at improving the pillar cutting compliance and reducing the likelihood of pillar bursts or pillar runs, which will ultimately create a safer mining environment. For several decades, the deep, gold-bearing reefs of the Witwatersrand basin have been mined predominantly according to layouts characterised by longwalls with strike pillars to provide regional support. During the past few years, a new generation of mining layouts has been introduced. These layouts are based on the concept of grid-type, scattered mining with dip pillars for regional support. As the extraction of the gold reefs extends to depths below 3500 m, the hazards associated with mining at these ultra-depths are expected to increase to unacceptable levels. Therefore, the question arises as to, which of the currently applied mining layouts is most acceptable for the economic and safe extraction of an ultra-deep orebody. The purpose of this paper is to describe a research investigation carried out to evaluate the degree of acceptability, from the rock engineering view point, of four currently used mining layouts for application at a depth-range of between 3500 and 5000 m. Pendant plusieurs décades, les filons d’or profonds du bassin du Witwatersrand ont été exploités d’une manière prédominante selon des dispositions caractérisées par des longues tailles avec des piliers directionnels pour donner un support local. Les dernières années ont vu la naissance d’une nouvelle génération de dispositions de mine. Ces dispositions sont basées sur le concept d’extraction type grille, éparpillée, avec des piliers au pendage pour le support local. Comme l’extraction des filons d’or va à des profondeurs en dessous de 3500m, il faut s’attendre à ce que les risques associés à l’exploitation à ces profondeurs extrêmes atteignent des niveaux inacceptables. Par conséquent, la question se pose de savoir laquelle des dispositions de mine couramment utilisées est la plus acceptable pour l’extraction rentable et sans danger d’un gisement ultra profond. Le but de l’étude présente est de décrire les recherches exécutées pour évaluer le degré d’acceptabilité, du point de vue d’ingénierie de roche, de quatre dispositions de mine couramment utilisées pour application à un rayon de profondeur entre 3500 et 5000m. Die tiefen, goldträchtigen Riffs des Witwatersrandbeckens wurden über einige Jahrzehnte hindurch vorwiegend nach jenen Layouts abgebaut, die von Langfrontstreben mit Schlagpfeilern charakterisiert waren, um regionale Unterstützung zu gewährleisten. Während der letzten Jahre wurde eine neue Generation von Grubenlayouts eingeführt. Diese Layouts basieren auf dem Konzept der Rasterfeld-Art, gestreuter Bergbau mit Neigungspfeilern für regionale Unterstützung. Es kann erwartet werden, daß auf Grund der Tatsache, daß sich die Extraktion der Goldriffs auf Tiefen unterhalb 3500 m verlagert, die Gefahren, die mit dem Bergbau an diesen Ultratiefen verbunden sind, sich auf ein nicht annehmbares Niveau erhöhen. Folglich erhebt sich die Frage, welche der gegenwärtig angewendete Abbaulayouts für die ökonomische und sichere Extraktion eines ultra-tiefen Erzkörpers am annehmbarsten ist. Zweck dieser Arbeit ist es, eine durchgeführte Untersuchung zu beschreiben, die vom Gesichtspunkt der Gesteinstechnik gesehen, vier gegenwärtig angewandte Abbaulayouts für den Einsatz in einem Tiefenbereich zwischen 3.500 und 5.000 m evaluiert.

Premier Mine is a large underground diamond mine, situated at Cullinan in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. The mine hoists over 3 millions tons of diamond bearing kimberlite per year, from a modern, mechanized panel retreat block cave mining operation. Troughs sited at the base of the cave are developed into the overlying caved ore, allowing loading access to the ore through draw points. Trough opening is therefore a vital aspect of the mining operation. Most of the production is dependent on fast, reliable and safe trough opening. Successful trough openings are achieved under difficult mining conditions due to restricted void, long up-holes and the inherent properties of kimberlite?soft, elastic rock with a high swell factor. Early in 1998, Premier Mine undertook a joint development project (with an electronic initiation system supplier) to determine whether the use of a fully programmable electronic detonator system would enhance the mining cycle in the trough opening process. Blasting commenced in February 1998, initially with blasts of a similar size and duration to those that had been previously blasted with shock-tube systems, to confirm the operational capabilities of the blasting system. The accuracy, reliability and flexibility of the electronic delay detonators (EDDs) minimized associated risks for re-engineering of the trough opening process. Further, as blast timing was optimized, larger blasts were successfully initiated. To date over 20 troughs have been opened successfully with the use of EDDs. Not only did it take less time to open troughs, but also drilling and blasting operations have been optimized, as well as an overall improvement in safety. This paper details the benefits that EDDs have delivered to Premier Mine in this area. A systematic study of groundwater conditions at eight underground mine sites exhibiting a wide range of groundwater qualities throughout Australia has been completed at the WA School of Mines. This has resulted in a new corrosivity classification for groundwater driven corrosion processes for cement grouted cable strand used in the Australian underground mining industry. The new corrosivity classification is simple to use and corrosion rates may be predicted from readily obtained in situ measurements of groundwater dissolved oxygen.

This paper investigates a potential method for arsenic removal from copper concentrates using hypochlorite leaching. The problems concerning pyrometallurgical processing of copper concentrates with high arsenic contents are discussed. A possible solution to the problem by leaching of natural enargite crystals with sodium hypochlorite under alkaline oxidizing conditions, with enargite converted into crystalline CuO and the soluble arsenic forming AsO43-, was experimentally investigated and results are presented. Kinetic parameters were calculated for enargite leaching, using a model-free approach. Advanced isoconversional methods were used to investigate the dependence of activation energy (Ea) on reaction rate (a). In 2015, after amendments to the explosives regulations, stemming became a mandatory activity for all South African mining operations. There are, however, circumstances in which it is thought stemming has an adverse impact on the blasting outcome. Some of these circumstances include blasting in hot holes, in reactive ground, or when blasting a pre-split. In order to determine when stemming is necessary, its role in the control of adverse blasting phenomena and impact on explosive performance were reviewed. Stemming was found to play a significant role in the fragmentation process and burden movement. Additionally, stemming significantly influences the control of flyrock, air-blast, and toxic fume generation. The review of the literature indicates some motivation for not using stemming for presplit, trim, hot hole, and reactive ground blasting, provided the benefits associated with not stemming the holes outweigh the risks of stemming them. Best practice for stemming from the literature indicates a stemming length of 0.7 × burden is best for larger hole diameters, and 20 to 30 × Ø for smaller hole diameters. Crushed aggregate appears to be the most effective stemming material. The South African explosives regulations pertaining to stemming were found to be consistent with those of Australia and the USA.

Increased contamination due to sand in spiral feed has had a negative effect on the efficiency of spiral concentrators at Navigation Plant. The no. 1 seam at Kromdraai opencast, which was previously mined by underground bord and pillar methods, is now susceptible to spontaneous combustion because of air ingress into the old workings which are exposed in the opencast high wall. This posed a risk in the loss of reserves to burnt coal. As solutions, buffer blasting of the preceding cut to collapse bords and soft overburden dressing of un-collapsed bords were implemented to prevent air entering the workings. The latter remedy resulted in increased contamination due to addition of sand in Run of Mine. After evaluating alternatives, a low capital option was selected. The 110t/hr Teetered Bed Separator (TBS) has been installed, primarily to desand and upgrade the feed to the spiral concentrators. The unit indicated an upgrade with a yield increase of 0.4% during test work and is currently showing an overall plant yield increase of 0.97%.

Dolomite is a calcium carbonate sedimentary rock that can be found all over the world. In its calcined form it is employed for water treatment or as an additive in iron production. Calcined dolomite is produced at the Wünschendorfer Dolomitwerk GmbH in shaft furnaces (kilns). Because of an expansion of the mined deposit, significantly higher extraction costs were expected. Therefore, the existing upgrading processes for the kiln stone fraction had to be adapted and improved. This paper presents a process optimisation which allows for an increase of the yield of calcined dolomite by 10 % due to a redesign of the crusher circuit and by an additional 5 % due to a comprehensive characterisation of the kiln stone fraction itself. Here the interdependency between the pressure drop in the furnace during calcination and the size distribution of furnace stones was used to increase the amount of fine size fractions in the furnace feed without deterioration of the calcination process. The Two Rivers Project is a feasibility study to evaluate the UG2 chromitite layer on Dwarsrivier372KT, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. The project, which commenced in August 2001, is expected to receive go-ahead early in 2003. The project sponsors (AVMIN 55%, Implats 45%)required project delivery within a short timeframe requiring optimization of the geological and geostatistical programme. Geological modelling was carried out in parallel to the drilling programme, and significant up-front geostatistical preparatory work was done. The time saving was approximately 4 – 6 months on project delivery. The cost saving to the project (excluding NPV considerations) is estimated at R20–30 million. "In 2017, Petra Diamonds completed the construction and commissioning of a modern, fit-for-purpose diamond processing plant at Cullinan Diamond Mine (CDM). The design of CDM’s milling circuit is unconventional in that it comprises an autogenous (AG) mill with a grate discharge with large ports, low-revolution jaw crushers, and high-pressure grinding roll crushers with large operating gaps. In this paper we review the design to provide guidance on what is expected from the milling circuit and to demonstrate how the design aims to address challenges experienced in the old plant, which was based on staged crushing technology. We assessed the performance of the CDM AG milling circuit from commissioning and early production stages to examine its impact along multiple dimensions. In the assessment we sought to understand the lessons from our milling circuit regarding diamond liberation, energy consumption, and the future of diamond processing as a whole. IntroductionCullinan Diamond Mine (CDM), previously known as Premier Mine, is an underground diamond mine owned by Petra Diamonds. Petra Diamonds is a leading independent diamond mining group and a growing supplier of rough diamonds to the international market. Petra’s total resource of 305 million carats ranks third by size after De Beers and ALROSA (Petra Diamonds, 2018).CDM was established in 1902. Over 206 million tons of hard coal were mined in South African collieries in 1996. Some 132.5 millions tons came from underground operations and approximately 120 million tons came from bord-and-pillar workings resulting in between 100 000 and 150 000pillars being formed. Coal pillar design remains a significant feature of South African mining. This paper reviews South African coal pillar design procedures in the light of 90 pillar collapses that have occurred since 1904. It shows that, while the current pillar strength formula is still valid within the original empirical range of Salamon1,cognisance must be taken of local conditions. Current South African coal pillar research is attempting to account for the variations in local conditions with the emphasis on the effect of discontinuities and pillar deterioration. It is suggested that a more holistic approach to pillar design be adopted to include a design methodology that examines the stability of the roof, pillar and floor of the underground workings. Using this approach, deviations from the empirical database used by Salamon and Munro will be incorporated into the design methodology resulting in more stable underground workings.

The compressive strength of rock (sc) has an important effect on design of structures in rock engineering. Compressive strength can be determined in the laboratory using the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) test. Some other index tests, such as the point load test, are also used, particularly when suitable samples for UCS are not available. The quantification of rock texture has introduced a new method in rock engineering for estimating the mechanical and physical properties of rock materials from microscopic investigations. The aim of this study is to quantify rock texture to estimate rock strength from the texture coefficient (TC), which is determined from a statistical assessment of thin section images. Rock texture is quantified by twelve different images from a single thin section to increase the reliability of texture analysis. A data-set is prepared to investigate correlations between TC and sc. The statistical correlations are computed after classifying of the rock samples based on their lithology as well as grain features. Equations derived based on the results of this study are used to predict the approximate value of compressive strength from the texture coefficient. This method is particularly useful for preliminary studies in rock engineering projects prior to detailed site investigation.

The soil was decomposed shale and diabase from the Witwatersrand Supergroup. The location was in the car park of The Wilds (a public park) in Johannesburg. The method proved very simple and required less complex plant and equipment than normal when excavating the shallow soil sections in shafts. It involves driving steel sheets ahead of the shaft sump into the soils and then excavating inside the ?tub? created by the sheets whilst supporting the sheets above with regularly spaced circular Steel Rings. It is the intent of this paper to discuss the method and design approach to the method. This will be done at the hand of experiences at E2 shaft..
