South Africa’s mining and metals industries have an illustrious history dating back to the Late Iron Age. We live in a complex and data-intensive world that has already fundamentally changed how we work and live. The outbreak of the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 resulted in immeasurable suffering worldwide, but the crisis also accelerated many technological developments and altered the way we think about, and experience, technology and work. Problem-solving requires new and rapidly changing skills to manage the data tsunami. Whether at the rock face or on the processing plant, the fundamentals have not changed, although how we interact with minerals and their properties has changed dramatically. Sustainable processing and design are non-negotiable if we genuinely want to achieve the aim of the cradle-to-cradle principle. As we venture forth, what can scientists, engineers, technologists, and mathematicians learn from history? History is data presented in a context; sometimes, the context is also important. We exist in an age of data, with most of the world’s data created in only the past two years. History can enhance our understanding of the present and enhance our future outcomes. Lessons from history can help provide insights into making ethical and sustainable choices related to technology or engineering in the mining and metallurgical industry. Shifting the perspective of mining and metallurgy professionals from a narrow focus on complex technical solutions towards a broader context for problem-solving and designs that includes the entire ecosystem is crucial. In other words, using or reflecting on historical process development is, at its core, systems thinking.

The value realised by an open pit mine depends on the quality and integrity of the mine planning process as well as the level of execution against these mine plans. When managing the execution against the mine plan, how well the mine plan is executed spatially, is of critical importance. The short-term mine plan is the plan that is physically executed on most open pit mines. At the same time, the spatial mine-to-plan compliance is typically reconciled against the annual business plan. Short-term mine planning, therefore, plays an important role in the effectiveness of the spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation process by providing operational teams with detailed designs and schedules, while ensuring that mining execution is spatially aligned with the business plan. The Sishen open pit iron ore mine (Sishen) strives to continuously improve spatial compliance to the business plan. Sishen enhanced the role that short-term mine planning plays in enabling the forward-looking component of the spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation process. The enhanced short-term mine planning process focuses on detailed tactical sequence designs per mining pushback, the health of value chain buffers, spatial plan-to-plan reconciliation, and the associated management routines. This led to improved spatial mine-to-plan compliance to the business plan from 71% to 94% over the four-year period from 2020 to 2023 inclusive. These results indicate that the application of short-term mine planning as part of an integrated spatial mine-to-plan compliance process at open pit mines can contribute positively to improving the level of spatial execution against the business plan. This paper presents the enhancements made to the short-term mine planning process, which other open pit mining operations can consider to improve spatial mine-to-plan compliance.

This research involves the investigation of phase transformations in the platinum-chromium coated system. Single-layer 0.1 µm platinum coatings were deposited via electron beam deposition on 99.98 percent pure chromium substrates. Specimens were subjected to systematic heat treatment in a vacuum furnace at 900°C for up to 20 hours. Phase formation and the changes in surface morphology were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Both CrPt and Cr3Pt phases are formed during heat treatment for different times at 900°C. Significant changes in the morphology of this coated system were detected after heat treatment at 900°C for 20 hours.

The beneficiation equipment under the control of plant metallurgists exploits the differences in the physical properties between valuable and waste mineral components. In many cases, laboratory results are too late for process control and can only serve the purpose of "post" reports, the calculation of a mass balance and the issue of a quality certificate. As a result, experienced operators regularly adjust separation equipment based on the colour and texture of the various product streams in the beneficiation plant. Metallurgists quickly learn to recognise the different minerals in their ore body. The stereo microscope has been a valuable tool used by operators to quantify known mineral species. For many years it was the only practical method available for the purpose of process control and even for quality contro1. The modem spectroscope is far superior to the human eye and can rapidly detect a change in mineral composition. New generation optical scanners and digital signal processors can provide useful signals, related to mineral composition that can readily be applied for the purpose of process control. Successful case studies, covering dry in-line and slurry applications as well as in-plant fast spot analysers are presented.

The abrasiveness of a mineral or rock is an extremely important topic in the mining industry and is generally measured by the Bond abrasion index (AI). However, to determine such an index by the Bond test requires 1,600 g of sample with particle sizes ranging from ½” to ¾”, which are not available in certain situations, such as ore prospecting, drilling, and geometallurgical studies. In order to investigate the abrasiveness of smaller-sized sample materials, a modified LCPC test was developed, which allows testing fine materials (i.e., 1.0 mm or smaller) to predict wear in ore processing circuits and anticipate possible failures resulting from changes in abrasive characteristics of the ore being processed. The results for 16 different materials indicated a good correlation with the AI and the modified LCPC, resulting in a reliable alternative for the AI. "Electrical steels are used in motors, power generators, and transformers for electrical applications owing to their superior magnetic properties. These properties are attributed to the presence of a significant amount of silicon in the steel composition. Silicon steels are mainly grouped into two categories: grain-oriented (GO) and non-grain-oriented (NGO). The Si content of silicon steels is generally between about 0.50% and 6.5%. Therefore, silicon steels are further classified as low-, medium-, and high- Si steels. In this paper, liquid steel processing practices for certain silicon steel grades are outlined by considering a steelmaking company that integrates a basic oxygen furnace (BOF), a ladle furnace (LF), and an RHtype degassing unit (RH). Possible problems are identified, suggestions are discussed, and conclusions are drawn on the basis of real plant data. However, the differences in the properties and thermomechanical production of GO and NGO grades are outside the scope of this paper. In this study, liquid steel processing of certain silicon steels will be discussed. In the integrated iron and steelmaking process, converters are the primary steelmaking units that are used mainly for decarburization and removal of phosphorus, and for obtaining liquid steel with a specific chemical composition and suitable temperature for secondary steelmaking operations. Ladle furnaces are a type of ladle metallurgy station consisting of electrical and/or chemical heating facilities for adjusting the liquid steel temperature during alloying. Various types of vacuum units are used for decarburization and removal of nitrogen, hydrogen, and sulphur, depending on the metallurgical conditions of the vacuum units. In this study, an actual steel-production company is considered in which the primary steelmaking operation uses a basic oxygen furnace (BOF) converter with N2/Ar bottom blowing, and the secondary steelmaking operations involve (1) a ladle furnace (LF) heated by three graphite electrodes and equipped with Ar and N2 top/bottom mixing facilities, and (2) an RHtype (circulation) vacuum degassing unit equipped with a top-blowing attachment for oxygen blowing and an Ar-purging system from an up-leg snorkel."

Most Australian longwall coal mines are currently working coal faces up to nine kilometres from the surface. In the event of a mine emergency walking this sort of distance wearing breathing apparatus becomes very difficult if not impossible. Self-rescue continues to remain the focus of mines rescue in Australian coal mines and this paper describes a vehicle modification which will improve the chances of a miner rescuing himself. Existing mine personnel transport vehicles are not designed to operate in some types of atmospheres that may be present following a mine fire or explosion event. An Australian Coal Association Research program (ACARP) funded research project recently completed in Australia has developed a specification for a vehicle that is able to operate safely in some types of post emergency atmospheres. During the course of this investigation, diesel and electric vehicles were examined prior to making a final decision on vehicle suitability. Based on the fact that there are already some 1500 diesel vehicles in use in underground coal mines in Australia it was decided that modifications to existing diesel engines would be the best option. This presentation will outline the proposed specification for the vehicle and the reasons behind the decisions that were made with respect to the specification.

"The accurate modelling of geometallurgical data can significantly improve decision-making and help optimize mining operations. This case study compares models for predicting copper recovery from three indirect test measurements that are typically available, to avoid the cost of direct measurement of recovery. Geometallurgical data from 930 drill core samples, with an average length of 19 m, from an orebody in South America have been analysed. The data includes copper recovery and the results of three other tests: Bond mill index test; resistance to abrasion and breakage index; and semi-autogenous grinding power index test. A genetic algorithm is used to impute missing data at some locations so as to make use of all 930 samples. The distribution of the variables is modelled with D-vine copula and predictions of copper recovery are compared with those from regressions fitted by ordinary least squares and generalized least squares. The D-vine copula model had the least mean absolute error. IntroductionIn this paper we compare the use of D-vine copula, generalized least squares (GLS), and ordinary least squares (OLS) for modelling geometallurgical data from an orebody in South America. The first objective is to construct models for predicting copper recovery (Rec) from the Bond mill index test (BWi); resistance to abrasion and breakage index (A*b); and semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) power index test (Spi). This involves fitting a D-vine copula and regression models fitted by OLS and GLS. The second objective is to investigate the performance of the fitted models for predicting Rec (Willmott and Matsuura 2005).Traditional resource model approaches either ignore the mineral processing characteristics of extracted tonnages or treat processing as an independent component of a mining operation. The net present value (or any other objective) can be truly optimized only by considering the mining operation as an integrated system in which net value is defined as the end-product that the company sells. This approach requires the resource model to be extended to include all relevant rock properties and processing responses."

Fluorination of magnetite (Fe₃O₄) by NH₄HF₂ was investigated using simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), and observing the morphology and phase changes using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results indicate that fluorination with the involvement of oxygen begins at room temperature, peaks at 178.40C, and is completed at 2000C with the formation of only (NH₄)₃FeF₆. On heating, (NH₄)₃FeF₆ gradually releases NH₄F by the formation of NH₄FeF₄ at 2590C, then (NH₄)0.18FeF₃ at 3270C, and finally FeF₃ with minor FeF₂ at 4000C due to the partial reduction of Fe (III) to Fe (II). At 5500C, FeF₃ is oxidized to FeOF/Fe₂O₃.

It is commonly accepted that three types of aquifers exist in the Bushveld Complex: (a) alluvial aquifers in areas of river courses, (b) weathered bedrock aquifer formed by the in-situ weathering of the bedrocks, (c) fractured aquifers underlying the weathered aquifers controlled by the regional and local fracturing of the crystalline rocks. Hydrogeological studies conducted in the Critical Zone of the Bushveld Complex in the western limb show that the UG2 pyroxenite layer is of a particular interest and has a unique aquifer property. It yields much of the groundwater inflow into some mines and can be classified as the most important aquifer in the vicinity of the mining zone. The UG2 pyroxenite aquifer is restricted to the dipping UG2 pyroxenite unit. The unit weathers more intensely than the surrounding norites and anorthosites and is characterized by deeper weathering horizons (two to three times deeper than the surrounding rocks). For much of the UG2 mining area between depths of 35 ? 80 m, stoping of the UG2 takes place approximately 5 ? 7 m below the UG2 pyroxenite aquifer, and usually there is no groundwater inflow into the mine workings. However, unsealed deep exploration boreholes intersecting the UG2 pyroxenite and reaching underground mine workings, or mine roofbolts penetrating the weathered pyroxenite aquifer from underneath, can result in significant groundwater inflows into the underground workings. The reason as to why the UG2 pyroxenite weathers more than the norites and anorthosites has not been fully studied but is suspected to be due to the bedding planes of the unit and mineralogical composition of the particular pyroxenes forming the unit, which result in preferential physical and chemical weathering under atmospheric conditions. The weathered pyroxenes form sand-sized, rounded grains with improved effective porosity and permeability suitable for the storage and passage of groundwater. The orientation of the pyroxenite aquifer can easily be determined as it dips with the Bushveld layered strata. No-flow boundaries can be assumed on the hanging- and footwall of the pyroxenite aquifer and the flow rates can be estimated using 2-dimentional analytical equations. However, this must be confirmed with strong conceptual models since the existence of a fracture network connecting the pyroxenite aquifer with the overlying weathered and/or underling fractured aquifers can complicate the system, lowering the accuracy of analytical models and necessitating the utilization of numerical models.

"A computer system for the design of open pits to mine stratiform orebodies has been developed for use at Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Ltd. The particular requirements of such a system, for example, the accuracy of representation of geological detail and the ability to follow footwalls, arc described in this paper, together with the methods that have been adopted to satisfy them.A modified version of the Open Pit Design Program of Rio Tinto Zinc Consultants, Ltd. is incorporated in the system and the geological data are converted into a form usable by the computer by means of a pencil follower. Some of the uses which have been made of the system are described, with reference to the long- and medium-term planning of the Nchanga Open Pit, the major producing pit at Chingola Division."

Sphalerite flotation using copper sulfate has been performed in the industry for decades and the mechanism of Cu activation is well established. Despite its ubiquity, many practical questions surrounding copper sulfate persist. It is not clear how iron selectivity is achieved in zinc circuits given the propensity of iron sulfides to be activated by copper. Also, the large variation in copper sulfate dosages across different plants and ore types cannot be explained. Lastly, Zn flotation with greatly reduced copper sulfate dosages attracts significant interest and has been demonstrated in certain laboratory settings, but no information is available on why those laboratory solutions have not been adopted in plant practice. Flotation studies are presented that demonstrate that Zn flotation with very low copper sulfate dosages is possible when using certain novel collectors that are not practised in the industry. However, these reagent schemes are impractical because of a heretofore unappreciated and critical role that copper sulfate plays in Fe rejection. With both very low and standard copper sulfate dosages, copper sulfate influences both Zn flotation and Fe rejection. The results highlight the multifaceted role of copper sulfate in zinc flotation and the need to holistically consider complex systems’ behaviour to understand flotation reagent mechanisms and optimise plant performance. "SAMPLING: THE IMPACT ON COSTS AND DECISION MAKING1. INTRODUCTIONFor years those in the minerals industry have been taking samples to assist them in making decisions; whether they be about investing billions of rand in a new mining operation, or simply whether a truck load of mineralised material should go to the mill or the waste dump, - we need a sample to help us make our decisions. This paper emphasises the importance and significance of sampling as a process, some of the associated technical problems and some of the advantages, especially in the light of traditional approaches that has usually left mine sampling to the least educated and lowest paid individuals on the mine. Perhaps the most important aspect that requires attention is the variability, usually measured in terms of precision, that tends to infect the sampling procedures. Francis Pitard 12 has stated: ""There is no such thing as reliable feasibility studies, unbiased ore grade control, accurate environmental assessments or effective process control, if you cannot identify and minimize the seven (ten) major sources of sampling variability. "" It is these ten sources of sampling variability and the way they arise that are briefly investigated. Variability is measured in terms of variances and rather than being self-compensating, there is good evidence to indicate that they are in fact additive at every step in the sampling and analytical process."

Jackleg rock drills expose their operators to high hand-arm vibration levels. To address this problem, an antivibration handle has been developed. The antivibration properties of the handle were achieved through a suspension based on a hinge design, achieved with a torsion spring and o-rings. To provide some bench marking for this new handle and to follow the evolution of its performance over time, a test bench was developed to characterize the vibration emission values of jackleg drills under controlled operating conditions. Testing of four antivibration handles on the test bench have shown reductions of the overall weighted acceleration level in the order of 54 % to 60 %, with most of the attenuation occurring in the zh-axis at the rock drill percussion frequency.

Refractory gold-containing concentrates usually contain gold enclosed in sulphides as well as in rock-forming minerals. Another difficulty is that gold often occurs as very fine inclusions of several micrometres, and even smaller than 1 micrometre, or can be part of the mineral composition at the structure level. Processing of such concentrates is a challenge. Ultrafine grinding and further oxidation are applied for gold liberation. The paper deals with the results from the study of gold deportment using Qemscan, and atmospheric oxidation testwork involving Albion Process™ on a gold-containing concentrate with a high content of refractory gold in sulphides and gangue minerals. Albion process testing was performed at Institute TOMS with the participation of Glencore Technology Pty Ltd (Australia). Additionally, conventional cyanidation testwork was carried out for the concentrate processing. As an alternative technology of gold liberation, oxidising roasting with arsenic stabilisation was used. The results from the study make it possible to assess the efficiency of the above-mentioned methods of gold liberation, and applicability of Albion technology to recover gold from the refractory concentrate. Drill-hole spacing analysis (DHSA) and optimization are becoming commonplace for uncertainty assessment and management in the mining industry. However, there is no standardized DHSA workflow, and the outputs of certain methodologies are not interchangeable. We group available simulation-based DHSA methods according to their accounted uncertainty into (i) raw uncertainty, assessed by drawing realizations from synthetic data-sets with the drilling spacings to be tested; and (ii) model uncertainty, in which these synthetic data-sets are used to assess the variation between the estimated model and the (unknown) actual value. DHSA workflows available in the literature ignore the differences between both types of uncertainty. Commonly, the DHSA algorithm is chosen without a detailed analysis of its uncertainty output, which may lead to misleading results and suboptimal decisions. While available solutions are based only on assessing raw or model uncertainty, the proposed approach simultaneously analyses both and their relationship for models at different stages of the mine. The integrated analysis results deliver more information to support decision-making than available methods. Principles, practical considerations, and discussions of the advantages of the proposed integrated analysis are presented. The approach is applied to a real gold deposit to illustrate its use.

Arsenic-bearing acidic effluent from hydrometallurgical processes contains many harmful metal ions and must be appropriately treated before discharge. In the present study, arsenic, copper, zinc, aluminum, and magnesium were co-precipitated by means of the Fenton reaction. The precipitates obtained under different conditions were investigated to determine their stability. The results indicate that pH value and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) dosage have significant effects on the removal of various elements. Arsenic, copper, zinc, and aluminum (but not magnesium) can be removed at pH 5–6 and anH2O2/As mole ratio of 2 at ambient temperature. The precipitates were mainly amorphous and granular with particle size in the micrometre range. The arsenic concentration in leachate from the toxicity characteristic leaching test was 3.6 mg/L, which proves that the precipitates are effective in fixing arsenic.

In open pit mining, ore and waste are hauled outside of the excavation area by trucks that move along a system of ramps. The design of these ramps must be carefully addressed because they have to comply with geomechanical constraints to ensure the stability of the pit walls, provide access to the different levels and phases, but also maximise the value of the extracted ore and reduce the extraction of waste. Because an optimisation approach able to deal with the design of the full ramp system seems to be out of reach at the moment, this paper addresses the problem of designing one ramp providing access to a single pushback, which has been determined beforehand. The optimisation objective is therefore to find a ramp that gives access to one given potential volume, while minimising its impact on the economic value of the volume. Two versions of the problem are formalised. One version allows the extraction of ore and waste only if this extraction is necessary for the ramp system. This version somehow minimises the intrinsic value of the ramp system. In the second version, it is possible to extract more than is needed by the ramp system. For instance, this takes into account the possibility of attaining ore on the wall opposite to the ramp as soon as the ramp reaches its level. In the setting mentioned above, the contribution of this work is three-fold. First, the computational complexity of the two different versions of the problem is presented and discussed; in particular, they are shown to be NP-hard. Second, compact integer programs modelling these two versions are proposed. Third, an efficient GRASP algorithm able to cope with the large instances of the problem is proposed. To assess the proposed approaches, the models and algorithms are applied to real instances with an off-the-shelf solver, illustrating and discussing their potential and relevance for the two versions of the problem. They are also compared with other approaches from the literature in terms of value and resulting designs.

Tronox Namakwa Sands operates two ilmenite smelters for the production of high-titania slag and low-manganese pig iron. Slag or metal is tapped from one of two product-specific, bi-level tap-holes. In this paper the refractory design specific to the tap-hole refractory layout is described, as well as practices for slag and metal tapping and refractory maintenance. Further developments planned are briefly described.
