"SynopsisScientific progress relies on the publication of ideas and experimental results that can be replicated, tested, and improved over time. The first printed book on metallurgy to have been published in Europe is considered to be De la Pirotechnia, written in Italian by Vannoccio Biringuccio, and published in Venice in 1540. Together with De Re Metallica, written by Georgius Agricola and published in Latin in 1556, this can be considered to mark the start of scientific and technical literature in this field. Scientific publishing of journal papers has been in existence for 350 years, since the world's oldest and longest-running scientific journal, the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, was first published in London in 1665.The nature of scientific societies has changed significantly since the early days when regular meetings were held to discuss science and conduct experiments, and the reading of scientific papers took place, and publication of papers was undertaken to record the proceedings of meetings, often including rather robust debate. In today’s world, there is a plethora of publications, and it is close to impossible for anyone to keep up with the vast flow of information. International conferences with hundreds of presentations have taken the place of the local meetings that used to discuss a single paper or experiment. In this frenetic environment, it is essential that researchers are able to trust the material they read.The system of peer review is used to maintain standards and to improve the quality of papers. This vital system is, however, significantly flawed. There is little incentive for reviewers to invest sufficient time in picking up all errors in publications, and any ineptitude on their part is usually protected by anonymity. It has reached the point where some reviewers have mistakenly permitted the publication of hoax papers deliberately presented with a complicated scientific facade. In light of such astounding inadequacies, perhaps a more open review process would be an improvement. Electronic publishing allows errata to be linked to the original papers.There is an increasing trend towards open access for papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings, which helps to reach as wide an audience as possible. This also supports the statement in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which says ‘everyone has the right freely to … share in scientific advancement and its benefits’."

Much has been said and written about the need to reduce South Africa's dependence on gold. To compensate for the decline in the country's foreign-exchange earnings resulting from the phasing out of gold, which must inevitably occur at some future date, a far higher priority will have to be placed on the mining, beneficiation, and export of the 59 other mineral commodities produced in South Africa. The basic strategy of the mining and metallurgical industries should be to move from the traditional approach of establishing a resource base to the establishment of a market base; to turn from production orientation to market orientation; and to rely less on exploration and economies of scale and more on process innovation and product development. The enthusiasm, entrepreneurial spirit, and commitment of the leaders in the mining and metallurgical industry will clearly be of decisive importance in the establishment of new industries for the beneficiation and export of added-value mineral-based products. The State can make a significant contribution by the provision of a welldeveloped and efficient infrastructure, including rail and harbour facilities, communications and health services, roads, and of electricity and water supplies. In our search for a new development strategy for the beneficiation and export of South Africa's minerals, we need to recognize that no one nation has all the mineralresources that it needs. Commercial and strategic manipulation of mineral supplies should no longer be tolerated. The future of the human species lies in international cooperation and in a greater understanding of the limitations of the world we live in.

Planning the use of South Africa's energy resources, especially coal, is of the utmost importance. The State and the mining industry require reliable official estimates of the economically mineable coal reserves for planning purposes. An overview of al the previous reserve estimates is given, with specific attention to the two most recent estimates-those of Petrick and De Jager. The differences between these two estimates are highlighted. The following important aspects are discussed: . the need to update the information regarding South Africa's mineable coal reserves, . the necessity of understanding and agreement between the coal-mining industry and the State department responsible for updating the coal-reserve data, and . the importance of the specific assumptions used in the updating of the data. A downward adjustment of mineable reserve figures is proposed, and the factors that influence the meaningful exploitation of the coal reserves are discussed. A recommendation is made as to how the Waterberg coal reserve should be exploited, and it is concluded that the Soutpansberg Coalfield cannot be exploited economically in the foreseeable future. An evaluation of the status of the coal-export trade is made and compared with the assumptions and targets set at the start of the coal-exportation scheme. The comparison shows the extent to which the exploitation of the coal reserves is being negatively influenced by the current market situation. Recommendations are made regarding planning for the coal-export market, and the aspects that have to be taken into account to keep South Africa in the export market are identified. Reference is made to the fact that the present unrestrained wage and salary adjustments, which show a total disregard of South Africa's poor productivity record, require serious thought and speedy rectification if the country is to survive in the export market. A salary and wage strategy must be developed to suit the specific needs of the Republic of South Africa.

This paper provides an overview of the concepts of citations and journal impact factors, and the implications of these metrics for the Journal of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (JSAIMM). Two key research literature databases publish journal impact factors; namely, Web of Science and Scopus. Different equations are used to calculate journal impact factors and care should be exercised when comparing different journals. The JSAIMM has a low impact factor compared with some of the more prestigious journals. It nevertheless compares well with journals serving other mining sectors, such as the Canadian CIM Journal. The problems associated with journal impact factors are discussed. These include questionable editorial practices, the negative impact of this concept on good research, and the problem of a few highly cited papers distorting the journal impact factor. As a consequence, there is growing resistance to the use of journal impact factors to measure research excellence. The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment is a global movement striving for an alternative assessment of research quality. As a recommendation, the Editorial Board of the JSAIMM should adopt a pragmatic approach and not alter good journal policies simply to increase the journal impact factor. The focus should remain on publishing excellent quality papers. Marketing of the Journal, the quality of the published papers, and its open access policy should be used to counter the perception that journals with high impact factors are better options in which to publish good research material.

Abstract: Triaxial tests were conducted on the schist specimens with various anisotropic angles under confining pressures of 0, 7 and 15 MPa, and axial stress-axial strains, were measured and plotted for various conditions. The results obtained reveal the effects of schistose on the strength and deformability of the rock very clearly. Peak strength of the specimens for 00 and 900 schistose orientations are nearly the same. Modulus of elasticity of this rock varies with anisotropic angle. For 0 orientation modulus of elasticity increases to a maximum. Confining pressure increases the peak strength and improves the rock deformability. However, this effect is not the same for various orientations, and there are no similar trends for each anisotropy direction. Analysis of the results shows that consideration of a linear failure criterion such as Mohr-Coulomb is appropriate for the prediction of rock behaviour up to 10 MPa, rather than a non-linear one. The analysis also reveals that the friction angle and cohesion are affected by the anisotropy orientation, and this effect is more important for the cohesion than the friction angles. Le resistance final sur les echantilions pour les angles o degre et 90 degree est equivalent. Le modoule d elasticite de ce roch sera difere par a port de l angle de stratification. Pour l angle o degree le valeur de modoule est le maximum. le pousse lateral augmenterai le resitance final, et sera amilterai le toleran le de ductilite. Mais cette effet bn est pas unigue pour les different stratification, et pour les diferents directions no– isotrop it n y a pas le meme solution. L analyse des resulitats montre que le criterre de ruin comme mohr–colomb est moderate pour le pousse lateral jusq av lo mega pascal , et ce n est pas neccesaire d utiliser de criterre no–linear . Cette analyse aussi montre que l angle de frottement et cohsion est en relation de la direction no–isotrop, et cette effet est olus important pour le cohsion par a port de l angle de frottement . Growing global concern over the impacts of climate change, attributable largely to fossil fuel energy sources, has led to the widely shared goal for a ‘just transition’ to cleaner energy and reduced dependence on carbon-based fuels. As the world’s 14th biggest CO2 emitter and being particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, South Africa must embark on a just transition pathway. This paper reviews expected coal mine closures and associated community vulnerabilities and local governance challenges in South Africa. Decommissioning schedules for all coal-fired power stations and operating coal mines are plotted, and 69 mining host communities and 21 municipalities are mapped, classified, and described. Community socio-economic profiles are measured using a set of SDG indicators and census data and municipalities assessed through financial audits. Our research shows that five coal-fired power plants (8.9 GW) and 15 coal mines (29.5 Mt/a) will probably close by 2030, and a further four plants (14 GW) and 23 mines (106 Mt/a) by 2040. Thus, the shift to cleaner energy will likely occur without the premature closures implied by the just transition. The impact of mine closure on the 2.5 million residents of host communities will be significant, particularly as levels of income, employment, and education are already very low and many municipalities are in financial distress. The South African approach to the just transition needs to take local realities into account and the narrative must support an effective transition that does not undermine energy security and economic growth.

In this work we have reviewed methods to classify corrosivity of ground waters. Weight loss and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) corrosion tests have been done for rebar and steel strand. No clear indication of SCC was found. The application of tensile stress to 85 % of yield strength increased general corrosion rate significantly in very corrosive waters. The effect of corrosion protection on the axial behavior of steel strands was determined by double pipe axial tests with different embedment lengths. The results showed a significant difference on behavior between epoxy-coated steel strands, galvanized steel strands and plain steel strand. Dans la présente étude, nous avons passé en revue des méthodes permettant de classifier la corrosivité des eaux souterraines. Des tests portant sur les pertes de poids et sur la corrosion FCC (la fissuration par corrosion sous contrainte) ont été effectués pour les barres d’armature et les torons. Aucune indication nette de FCC n’a été constatée. L’application d’une contrainte de traction allant jusqu’à 85 % de la limite d’élasticité a accru de manière significative la vitesse générale de corrosion dans les eaux très corrosives. L’effet de la protection contre la corrosion sur le comportement axial des torons en acier a été déterminé au moyen de tests axiaux à double tube avec des longueurs d’enrobage différentes. Les résultats ont mis en évidence une différence significative quant au comportement entre les torons en acier à revêtement époxy, les torons en acier galvanisés et les torons en acier standard. In dieser Arbeit haben wir Methoden geprüft, die korrosive Wirkung des Grundwassers einstufen. Gewichtsverlust- und SCC-Korrosionstests wurden für Stahlstäbe und Drahtlitzen durchgeführt. Es wurden keine sicheren Hinweise auf Spannungsrisskorrosionsbrüche gefunden. Bei Anwendung einer Dehnbelastung von 85 % der Streckspannung bzw.Ergebnisstärke stieg die allgemeine Korrosionsrate in stark korrosivem Wasser deutlich an. Die Wirkung des Korrosionschutzes bei axialem Verhalten von Stahldrahtlitzen wurde durch axiale Tests an Doppelleitungen unterschiedlicher Versenkungslänge determiniert. Die Ergebnisse zeigten im direkten Vergleich von epoxidbeschichteten, galvanisierten und normalen Stahldrahtlitzen beachtliche Unterschiede im Verhalten auf.

Abstract This paper presents the results of a series of creep tests performed on a total of nine samples of Lac du Bonnet granite from the Underground Research Laboratory near Pinawa, Canada. Each of the nine samples were subjected to stresses in excess of 80% of the average uniaxial compressive strength of the granite and were maintained at that level of constant loading for periods of time ranging between a few minutes and several months. Acoustic emission was recorded in order to monitor the development and accumulation of brittle microfracture damage in the samples throughout the long-term loading. According to previously published theoretical predictions and field results, as well as similar experimental results of creep tests in granite, samples should fail when loaded to 70% of their UCS for an extended period of time. Six of the samples did not fail when subjected to stresses in excess of 80% of their UCS over periods of several months and were subsequently subjected to uniaxial compression to failure. The average strength of the samples that had previously been subjected to long-term loading were comparable to the average published strength of this rock. Three of the nine samples had increased end confinement and these three samples failed under long term loading. Résumé Cet article présente les résultats d'une série d'essais de fluage de roche exécutés sur neuf échantillons de granite de Lac du Bonnet, du laboratoire souterrain de recherches près de Pinawa, Canada. Chacun des neuf échantillons a été alors soumis aux charges au-dessus de 80% de la résistance à la UCS moyenne du granit et a été maintenu à ce niveau du chargement constant pendant des périodes s'étendant entre quelques minutes et plusieurs mois. L'émission acoustique a été enregistrée pendant les essais afin d'obtenir des indications des dommages pendant le chargement à long terme. Selon des résultats théoriques précédemment édités et les résultats expérimentaux semblables des essais à long terme en granite, échantillons devrait échouer si chargé à 70% de leur UCS pendant une période prolongée. Six des échantillons n'ont pas cassé quant ils ont été soumis aux charges au-dessus de 80% de leur UCS et ont été plus tard soumis à la compression uniaxiale à la rupture. La force moyenne des échantillons qui avaient été précédemment soumis au chargement à long terme étaient comparable à la force éditée moyenne de cette roche. Trois des neuf échantillons avaient augmenté le confinement de fin et ces trois échantillons ont cassé sous le chargement à long terme. Zusammenfassung Dieser Artikel beschreibt die Resultate von Kriechversuchen, die an neun Proben aus dem Lac du Bonnet Granit des "Underground Research Laboratory" bei Pinawa in Kanada durchgeführt wurden. Jede der neun Proben wurde Drücken unterworfen, die mehr als 80% der einaxialen Druckfestigkeit des Granites entsprechen. Diese Drücke wurden für verschiedene Zeitspannen von wenigen Minuten bis zu einigen Monaten auf einem konstanten Niveau gehalten. Wider Erwarten trat bei sechs der Proben kein Versagen ein, als sie mit über 80% ihrer einaxialen Druckfestigkeit über mehrere Monate belastet wurden; daher wurden sie im Anschluss bei einaxialer Kompression zum Versagen gebracht. Die mittleren Festigkeiten der im Langzeittest verwendeten Proben sind vergleichbar mit den normalerweise für diesen Gesteinstyp angegebenen Festigkeiten. Drei der neun Proben versagten unter der Langzeitbelastung; diese drei Proben hatten eine erhöhte Endflächenreibung.

Strainbursts are common in overstressed brittle rock around deep mine openings. Such failures are characterized by a biaxial state of stress in the plane of the opening boundary. A zone of compressive stresses imposes initial failures near or at the surface of the opening that results in spalling of thin slabs of rock roughly parallel to the free face. While the failure of rock under biaxial loading conditions is increasingly common in deep underground mines, only a few representative laboratory studies have been reported in the literature, without emphasis on rockbursting aspects, and none in the last decade. This paper presents the results of a testing program on a granite rock type. Biaxial testing, conducted on 100 mm cubic samples, was carried out to examine the influence of lateral confinement and loading rate on the rock’s ultimate strength. The paper reports the test results in terms of normalized biaxial failure envelope s1/sc-s2/sc. A discussion of the failure mechanisms observed is presented. Les coups de toits de déformations sont choses communes dans le rock cassant surcontraint en place autour des ouvertures minières profondes. De telles ruptures sont caractérisées par un état de contraintes biaxiales dans le plan de la périphérie de l’ouverture. Une zone de contraintes compressives impose des ruptures initiales à ou près de la surface de l’ouverture, qui produit des relâchements de minces plaques de roc plus ou moins parallel à la surface. Bien que les ruptures de roc sous des conditions biaxiales sont de plus en plus communes dans les mines à grandes profondeurs, il n’y a eu que quelques études représentatives en laboratoire de publiées, sans emphase sur des aspects de coups de terrains, et aucunes publiées depuis la dernière décennie. L’article présente les résultats d’une campagne d’essais appliquée à un type de granit. La campagne d’essais biaxiaux, sur des échantillons cubiques de 100 mm, avait pour objectif d’examiner l’influence du confinement latéral et le taux de chargement sur la résistance ultime du roc. Cet article fait part des résultats en terme de l’enveloppe de rupture biaxiale normalisée s1/sc-s2/sc. Une discussion sur les mécanismes de ruptures observés est présentée. Dehnungsbrüche findet man häufig in übergespannten spröden Felsen um die Öffnung von tiefen Minen. Solche Brüche sind von einer zweiachsigen Spannung in der Ebene der Grenze der Öffnung charakterisiert. Eine Zone von Druckspannungen verursacht initiale Brüche, entweder an der Öberflache der Öffnung oder in der Nähe. Davon scheiden sich dünne Felsplatten mehr oder weniger parallele mit der freien Wand. Obwohl Felsbrüche unter zweiachsiger Beanspruchung immer mehr häufig in tiefen Minen beobachtet sind, hat man über nur einige repräsentative Laborversuche in der Literatur berichtet. Diese Studien diskutieren das Thema ohne Betonung auf Felsbrüchen, und keine sind in den letzten zehn Jahren erschienen. Die vorliegene Arbeit gibt die Ergebnisse eines Testprogramms auf einem Typ von Granitfels. Durch zweiachsige Prüfungen von kubischen Proben mit Seitenlangen von 100 mm sollte man den Einfluss von seitlicher Ermittlung und der Beanspruchungsrate auf die Bruchfestigkeit des Felsen studieren. Man findet auch die Prüfergebnisse in bezug auf das normalisierte, zweiachsige Bruchkriterium s1/sc-s2/sc. Die beobachteten Bruchmechanismen sind auch diskutiert.

Uncertainty with regard to estimated grades and tonnages of a mineral deposit demands risk assessment in order to build investor confidence and attract the interest of other stakeholders in the success of a project. Uncertainties associated with Mineral Resource estimates can lead to unreliable production schedules and unpredictable cash flows. However, the techniques used in the mining industry to determine these uncertainties are inconsistent, because the important decisions taken in the process are solely dependent on the responsible Competent Person (CP), without limitations. This leads to disparities between different CPs’ results, using data-sets from the same drill-holes. The various standard codes for public disclosure provide guidelines and recommendations for the classification of Mineral Resources and Reserves but do not provide details on, for example, the amount of geological and geostatistical information needed to qualify for each category of Resources and Reserves. The parameters used to generate the classification categories are subjectively assumed by the responsible CP. In this paper we investigate the impacts of different CPs’ judgements on resource classification, using the same data-sets. The results underpin the need for the mining industry to develop a uniform Mineral Resources and Reserves classification framework that can minimize or avoid significant discrepancies that lead to potential misleading public disclosures.

There is a set of settled ideas in the field of the mechanics of rock mass joints, that need a deep revision, after the last experimental works of several authors. In this paper, this theme is approached under several viewpoints, like the following ones: the essential influence of the mating or mismatching of rock joints on their strength (different strength models are applicable to these two situations, one leading preferably to normal scale effects, and the other to inverse scale effects); Patton's model is a bad formulation of the joint strength, whenever there is a dilation effect in the slidings (actually, the essential consideration of the amplitude of the roughess isn't made by any limit equilibrium model, like Patton's model); the joint strength increases as the width perpendicular to the sliding direction is reduced (previous works of other authors suggested the independence of the strength on that width); the reduction of the anisotropy of the roughness, as the sample symmetry and sample dimensions increase; there is no scale effect in the discontinuity mechanics, if there is no roughness heterogeneity; when only the same roughness and undulation orders are involved in the tests, shorter samples have larger peak displacements and lower shear stiffnesses than larger samples (usually, the contrary is admitted). For all these reasons, there isn't an easy correlation between the small scale tests and the natural large joint scale. Only "in situ" large scale tests have some representativeness. All the above mentioned questions are correlated to each other. Es gibt eine Menge eingewurzelter Ideen im Gebiet der Mechanik von Felsklüften, die, nach den letzten experimentellen Arbeiten von mehreren Verfassern, eine tiefe Überprüfung benötigen. Nur "in situ" Versuche im großen Maßstab sind einigermaßen repräsentativ. Alle die oben erwähnten Fragen hängen miteinander zusammen. Uniaxial tension tests were conducted on specimens of eleven granitic rocks which came from eastern Japan, and included a granite, four granodiorites, four tonalites and two gabbros. The axial and transversal deformability of these rocks was determined based on strain measurements using wire strain gauges. The experimental test results revealed that deformational properties of the rocks investigated varied depending on their petrographic features. However, the axial strain and the lateral strain characteristics showed a similar trend for all the rocks, i.e. the stress-strain curves were non-linear throughout the whole stress range from the initial point of loading to the point of ultimate failure. Moreover, the tangent Young's modulus and the ratio of the lateral strain to the axial strain decreased monotonously with the increasing of the axial stress. Still, the deformational properties were different for individual rocks in a quantitative sense. In particular, the difference in the lateral strains among different rocks was more distinct than that in the axial strains. For example, the Poisson's ratio at a stress level equal to 50% of the ultimate strength of a granodiorite was very low, close to zero. Furthermore, the Poisson's ratio of a tonalite was lower than that of a granodiorite, and assumed a negative value. This effect occurred because the lateral strain became positive as it changed from contraction at the initial stage of loading to extension at higher stress levels. There is no ready explanation for this phenomenon; it is believed, however, that it occurs due to microcracks pre-existing in rock materials and/or weak bonds between the adjacent mineral grains. Les essais de traction directe ont été conduits sur les échantillons de onze roches granitiques provenant de la région Est du Japon: un granit, quatre granodiorites, quatre tonalites et deux gabbros. Déformabilité axiale et transversale de ces roches s’était déterminée en utilisant des jauges extensométriques à fil. Les résultats obtenus à partir des essais montrent que la déformabilité des roches examinées varie selon leurs propriétés pétrographiques. Cependant, à partir des essais, une tendance semblable était observée dans les paramètres de la déformation axiale et la déformation latérale de toutes les roches; c'est-à-dire chaque courbe de contrainte-déformation était non-linéaire dans tout l'intervalle de contraintes à partir de l’état initial jusqu’à l’état d’une rupture finale au cours du chargement. De plus, le module tangent de Young et le rapport de la déformation latérale sur la déformation axiale a diminué de manière monotone avec l'augmentation de la contrainte axiale. Cependant, les différences quantitatives de propriétés de déformation sous traction étaient observées entre des roches individuelles. Particulièrement, la différence de déformations latérales était plus notable que celle-là de déformations axiales entre des roches différentes. Par exemple, le coéfficient de Poisson à un niveau de contrainte égal à 50 % de la résistance d'un granodiorite était très bas, près du zéro. En outre, le coéfficient de Poisson de la tonalite était inférieur que celui du granodiorite et a assumé une valeur négative. Cet effet est apporté parce que la déformation latérale est devenue positive en passant de la contraction dans l'étape de chargement initiale à l'extension sous les contraines plus hautes. Il n'y a aucune explication prête de ce phénomène; on prétend, cependant, qu'il est induit par des microfissures préexistantes dans des matériaux rocheux et/ou des joints faibles entre les grains minéraux adjacents. Einaxiale Zugversuche wurden auf Probestuecke von elf frischen, in Ostjapan vorkommenden, granitartigen Gesteinen durchgefuehrt, welche einen Granit, vier Granodiorite, vier Tonalite und zwei Gabbros umfassten. Die axiale und transversale Verformbarkeit von diesen Gesteinen wurde durch Verformungsmessungen mit Drahtdehnungsmessstreifen geklaert. Die experimentellen Versuchsergebnisse offenbarten, dass Verformbarkeitseigenschaften des untersuchten Gesteins in Abhaengigkeit von ihren petrographischen Eigenschaften variierten. Jedoch zeigten die axialen und die lateralen Spannungsdehnungslinien eine aehnliche Tendenz bei allen Gesteinen, d.h. die Verformungskurven waren nicht linear im ganzen Bereich vom Ausgangspunkt des Belastens bis zum Punkt des entgueltigen Bruchs. Ausserdem verringerten sich das tangentiale Elastizitaetsmodul und das Verhaeltnis der lateralen Verformung zur axialen Verformung monoton mit der Erhoehung der axialen Spannung. Dennoch waren die Verformbarkeitseigenschaften der einzelnen Gesteine in der quantitativen Wahrnehmung unterschiedlich. Insbesondere war der Unterschied bezueglich der lateralen Verformungen zwischen verschiedenen Gesteinen eindeutiger, als der in den axialen Verformungen. Z.B. war die Querkontraktionszahl auf einem Spannungsniveau, das 50% der Zugfestigkeit eines Granodiorits entspricht, sehr niedrig und nah an Null. Ausserdem war die Querkontraktionszahl eines Tonalits negativ und deshalb niedriger als die eines Granodiorits. Dieser Effekt trat auf, weil die laterale Verformung, als sie sich von der Kontraktion am Ausgangsstadium des Belastens bis hin zur Ausdehnung auf den hoeheren Spannungsniveaus aenderte, positiv wurde. Es gibt keine fertige Erklaerung fuer dieses Phaenomen; es wird jedoch angenommen, dass es wegen der Mikrorisse auftritt, die vorher im Gesteinsmaterial und/oder in den schwachen Bindungen zwischen den angrenzenden Mineralkoernern existieren.

Abstract: The aim of the research presented is to study the effect of complex loading schemes on the fracturing process during loading and/or unloading. A first set of experiments was done using a poly-axial cell. These experiments in combination with numerical simulations showed a difference in micro-fracturing (shear and tensile cracks), but not in macro-failure between various loading/ unloading schemes. The second set of experiments was based on the three-point bending test and several cycles with or without rotation between cycles were applied. If the specimen was rotated by 90° or 180° about its long axis between the first and second cycle, no Kaiser effect was observed. Résumé: Le but de la recherche présentée est d’étudier l’effet de schémas de charge complexe sur le processus de fracturation durant la phase de charge et de décharge. Une première série d’expériences était réalisée utilisant une cellule polyaxiale. Ces expériences combinées avec des simulations numériques ont montré une différence de micro-fracturation (fissures de cisaillements et de traction) pour les différents schémas de charge et décharge, mais en ce qui concerne la macro-fracturation ce n’est pas le cas. La deuxième série d’expériences était basée sur des essais de flexion trois points avec plusieurs cycles, avec ou sans rotation entre les cycles. Si l’échantillon est tourné de 90° ou 180° selon le grand axe entre le premier et le second cycle, l’effet Kaiser n’est pas observé. Zusammenfassung: Der Zweck der vorliegenden Forschung bestand darin, den Einfluß von komplizierten Beanspruchungsschemen auf den Bruchprozess im Laufe von Belastung und/oder Entlastung von Gesteinen zu untersuchen. Der erste hier beschriebene Satz von Experimenten wurde mit einer dreiaxialen Belastungsmaschine angestellt. Diese Experimenten zusammen mit dazugehörigen numerischen Simulationen zeigten Unterschiede zwischen Be- und Entlastungsbeanspruchungen in Bezug auf mikrobruchmechanische Mechanismen (d.h. Scher- oder Zugrisse) an, aber nicht in Bezug auf den Makrobruchprozess. Der zweite Satz von Experimenten umfasste Gesteinsbeanspruchung in mehreren Zyklen von Drei-Punkt-Biegung, indem die Gesteinsproben zwischen den Zyklen um einen angegebenen Winkel (0°, 90° oder 180°) gedreht wurden. Falls die Probe um 90° oder 180° gedreht wurde, wurde kein Kaiser-Effekt im zweiten Zyklus beobachtet.

Soundless chemical demolition agents (SCDAs) are proving to be the future of sustainable and environmental-friendly mining. These expansive chemicals become critical when there is a need to break rock close to communities, environmentally sensitive areas, and critical structures and infrastructure. Unlike explosives, the SCDAs do not generate air-blast, ground vibrations, flyrock, noise, dust, and noxious fumes, which can negatively affect the environment, surrounding communities, sensitive areas, and critical structures and infrastructure. Over the years, several types of SCDA products have been used successfully in the civil and construction industries for the demolition of old and dilapidated buildings near vibrations and environmentally sensitive areas. They have also been used to fragment boulders in the mining and construction industries. However, to date, no study has investigated the applications of soundless chemical demolition on a large-scale in opencast mines. Therefore, this study evaluated whether soundless chemical demolition can break large volumes of in situ rock. This was done by conducting five trials using Nex-Pand soundless chemical demolition agents in four different surface mining sites. Trial 1 was unsuccessful as it was unable to break the rock due to the large confinement between the drilled holes and the use of a hole diameter that was 182% larger than recommended. Trial 2 was a success as it was able to fracture the rock with a crack width that reached 110 mm after 72 hours. Trial 3 generated cracks at the biggest hole diameter of 102 mm. The cracks developed and ceased to increase after 96 hours at a crack width of 100 mm. Trial 4 achieved the smallest crack width due to a very competent rock compared to the other sites. Trial 5 generated cracks at a slower rate than other trials because of the use of Nex-Pand powder at lower ambient temperatures than recommended. These trials proved that soundless chemical demolition agents can replace explosives in areas closer to sensitive infrastructure and communities. This will ultimately enable mines to unlock value and access deposits in these areas.

SYNOPSIS Tribute is paid to J.S. MacArthur and the Forrest brothers for their invention. The opinion is expressed that the successful application of their process, not only saved the gold-mining industry on the Witwatersrand from stag¬nation for an indefinite but probably prolonged period, but also made a major contribution to the economic growth of the country in the twentieth century. A background is given of the activities of prominent chemists who researched the solubility of gold in cyanide solution prior to the MacArthur-Forrest invention. An account is given of the invention and patenting of the cyanidation process, and of the golden rule that the patentees laid down for themselves, which came close to wrecking the invention. The South African gold-mining scene from the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886 up to 1890 is sketched. An account is given of how, when unoxidized ores were first encountered, the recovery efficiency dropped alarmingly, gold shares were sold on an unprecedented scale, and doom and despondency seized the town of Johannesburg. The complete turnabout in the fortunes of the South African gold-mining industry after the introduction of the cyanidation process in 1890, the steady rate of increase in production after the Anglo-Boer War, and its effect on the South African economy are described. A brief look is taken at the effect of gold mining on secondary industry. The deportment of the gold that is not dissolved from the ore by the cyanidation process is illustrated. Some thoughts are expressed on what can be done to increase the gold recovered by cyanidation.

Extraction of isolated blocks of ground with elevated levels of stress and/or seismicity is a common occurrence in South African gold mines. Isolated blocks of ground that are divorced from the main orebody and are bound by complex, dip and strike parallel, non-persistent geological structures dominate the Klerksdorp gold fields. No quantifiable methods exist to assess the risk associated with mining these and other classes of remnants. A case history, from a gold mine that planned to extract three remnant blocks hosted in a large complex fault system, is used to illustrate the decision making process based on a combination of underground observations, numerical and seismic techniques. Simple risk estimation matrices were developed and used to estimate remnant-mining risk and finally to quantify the decision on which of the three remnant blocks could be extracted at the lowest possible geo-mechanical risk. Il est courant dans les mines aurifères sud-africaines d’extraire des blocs de terrain isolés qui possèdent des niveaux élevés de contraintes et/ou sismicité. Les régions aurifères de Klerksdorp sont dominées par des blocs de terrain isolés qui sont séparés du gisement principal et qui sont retenus par des structures géologiques non continues, à parallèle de pendage et direction, et complexes. Il n’existe pas de méthodes quantifiables pour évaluer le risque associé à l’extraction de ce genre et autres genres de résidus. Une observation de cas, celle d’une mine d’or qui avait l’intention d’extraire trois blocs de résidus qui se trouvaient dans un grand système complexe de faille, est utilisée pour illustrer le processus décisionnel basé sur une combinaison d’observations souterraines, et de techniques numériques et sismiques. Des matrices simples d’estimation de risque furent développées et utilisées pour estimer le risque lié à l’extraction des résidus et finalement pour quantifier la décision sur lequel des trois blocs de résidus pouvait être exploité au moindre risque géo-mécanique. Die Extraktion isolierter Gesteinsblöcke mit erhöhtem Spannugsniveau oder Seismizität ist in südafrikanischen Goldminen üblich. Isolierte Gesteinsblöcke, die von der Haupterzader getrennt und durch komplexe, parallele abfallende und horizontale nicht persistent geologische Strukturen gebunden sind, beherrschen das Klerksdorp Goldfeld. Es gibt keine quantifizierbare Methoden die das Risiko welches mit dem Abbau dieser und anderer Klassen verbunden ist beschreiben. Eine Fallstudie einer Goldmine, welche die Extraktion von drei in einem großem komplexen Verwerfungssystem eingelagerten Einschlußblöcken plante, wird verwendet um den Entscheidungsprozeß zu illustrieren, der auf einer Kombination von Untertag Beobachtungen und numerischen und seismischen Techniken basiert. Einfache Gefahreinschätzungsmatrizen wurden entwickelt und angewendet um das Abbaurestrisiko abzuschätzen und letztendlich die Entscheidung zu quantifizieren, welcher der drei Einschlußblöcke unter dem niedrigst möglichen geo-mechanischen Risiko extrahiert werden konnte .

It is often asked whether this is atributed to the high grade of the ores encountered in this country, or whether such factors as fiscal and Infrastructural incentives create an economic climate that has en bled the mining industry to successfully extract and market minerals at a profit. This paper views South Africa's mineral resources in a regional and global context In an attempt to place the country's geological wealth in perspective. The aims of this study were to investigate the factors that influence women’s engagement in technical positions in the South African mining sector and to determine what could be done to promote their successful participation. A convergent parallel mixed-methods research design was used to ascertain the factors that facilitate, inhibit, and influence engagement. In the quantitative phase of the study, questionnaires were circulated to women employeees; and in the qualitative phase, semistructured interviews were conducted with employer representatives, most of whom were human resource personnel. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the three-factor structure (vigour, dedication, and absorption) of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale fit the sample data reasonably well. Although there is room for improvement, respondents demonstrated acceptable levels of engagement in their work. On the other hand, the qualitative findings showed that employee engagement is impacted by unfavourable working conditions, work–life balance, and the mining industry’s male-dominated work culture. The findings showed that employee engagement should be elevated to a core human resource function. To increase the participation of women in mining, human resource professionals are encouraged to collaborate with mine supervisors, managers, and employees to develop programmes that promote employees’ absorption in and dedication to their work.

Abstract The in-situ stress field is one of the primary parameters influencing the performance of underground structures particularly in the Himalayas where there is strong influence of topography and geology on in-situ stresses. It is always advisable to measure the in-situ stresses, in whatever best way possible. Hydrofracturing is one of the methods by which in-situ stress can be measured. This paper briefly describes details of the concept of Hydrofracturing in arriving at the in-situ stresses of the rock mass at Pancheswar Project. The data obtained from the tests has been analysed, interpreted and the results are presented in this paper. Kurzfassung Das Spannungsfeld an Ort und Stelle ist einer der wichtigsten Parameter, die das Verhalten der Untergrund-Struktur beeinflussen, insbesondere in den Himalayas, wo die Topografie und die Geologie einen grossen Einfluss auf die oertlichen Spannungen ausueben. Es empfiehlt sich stets die Spannungen an Ort und Stelle so gut wie moeglich zu erfassen. Die Hydrofraktur bzw hydrografisches Zerstueckeln ist eine der Methoden, die bei den Messungen der oertlichen Spannungen verwendet werden koennen. Diese Abhandlung beschreibt kurz Einzelheiten ueber das Konzept von Hydrofraktur bei der Bestimmung der Spannungen an Ort und Stelle von der Felsmasse bezueglich des Projekts Pancheshwar. Die gewonnenen Daten aus den Messungen wurden analysieret und ausgewertet. Die Ergebnisse werden dabei vorgelegt. Sommaire Le champ de contraintes in-situ est un des paramèters principaux influencant l’exécution des structures souterraines particulierèment en Himalaya où les forces in-situ sont fortement influencées par les caractéristiques topographiques et géologiques de la région. La fracturation hydraulique est une technique qui permet de mesurer des forces in-situ des massifs rocheux. Cet article décrit brièvement le mécanisme de fracturation hydraulique et présente les résultats de mesure des forces in-situ des roches au site du projet hydroélectrique de Pancheswar.

Technical publications in the field of mining and metallurgy have existed for a long time. Recent developments in electronic publishing on websites make it possible to disseminate information more widely and cost-effectively than before. Professional societies have an opportunity to serve their members and their industry by publishing high-quality peer-reviewed papers on their websites as well as in printed form. Older publications can be scanned, and optical character recognition used to provide searchable text. Various business models exist around this process. This paper outlines the approach used by the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) to provide free open access to their journal papers and conference proceedings, as well as the work being done by OneMine.org to collect technical papers from a number of international societies and make them available to subscribers via a large database. An approach is outlined that should be of benefit to authors, readers, and society at large.
