During August 1943, the Bureau of Mines undertook sampling and measuring of the Kennedy zinc tailing pile near Hazel Green, Lafayette County, south-western Wisconsin, as part of a general investigation of this lead-and zinc-producing area at a time when it was extremely important to increase the production of metals for the Nation's War program. The tailing pile was the residue from old jigging plants that treated ore from the Kennedy mine, one of the oldest and. largest mines in the district. Because retreatment of tailing by modern milling methods was proving economically successful at other sites in the southwestern Wisconsin field, the Bureau?s investigation was designed to assist the potential operators in evaluating the feasibility of a retreatment operation at this site. The study involved measurement of the tailing pile and sampling by means of auger to determine the average metal content within the narrowest possible limits. A total of 46 auger holes ranging in depths up to 40 feet and aggregating 886.5 feet of bore were drilled in the tailing pile, and weighted samples from each hole were analyzed and averaged to determine the zinc and iron content of the tailing.

The Bureau of Mines has designed and built a controlled-environment test chamber specifically for instrument evaluation in simulated work atmospheres. The atmosphere inside the 300-liter stainless steel chamber can be controlled at any selected temperature and relative humidity in the range of 2° to 93° C and 20 to 95 percent, respectively. Instruments placed inside the test chamber are subjected to an atmosphere at a preset temperature and humidity containing various concentrations of toxic gases such as CO, C02, NO, NO2, S02, and H2S. Toxic gas losses resulting from wall reactions, monitoring instruments, and instruments under evaluation are compensated by the use of a dynamic gas blending system.

Equilibrium phase diagram studies of zirconium- rare earth metal alloys by the Bureau of Mines at its Albany Metallurgy Research Center prompted the development of a rapid gravimetric method for determining rare earths in zirconium in which the rare earths are absorbed from sulfuric acid solution of the alloy on a cation exchange resin . The sample in 10 percent H2SO4 is introduced into the column , the zirconium is eluted with 10 percent H2SO4 , and the rare earths are eluted with (NH4 )2SO4 solution and precipitated with NH4OH . A tracer technique was employed to determine the efficiency of the procedure . Y203 and europium 154 - 152 (Oak Ridge ) were added to 10 g of zirconium and taken through the entire procedure . Recovery averaged 97.6 percent on 0.002 μg europium in the rare earth fraction . Rare earths were determined in the range 0.10 to 90 percent .

"The El Dorado copper mine is situated in the foothill copper-zinc belt of California, which traverses the western slope of the Sierra Nevada with unusual persistence from Butte County to Kern County, a distance of more than 300 miles. Although this area contains such important past producers as the Penn mine, Union, and others, a great part of the current production has been derived from smaller properties, which depend largely on premium metal prices for economical operation. The El Dorado mine is in the latter group, which constitutes an important source of metal in a national emergency.Exploration by the Bureau of Mines by means of eight diamond-drill holes Indicated narrow, intermittent lenses of copper ore along structures boo feet in length. The copper occurs in massive sulfides composed of chalcopyrite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, and minor quantities of bernite. The sulfides have evidently replaced tuffs, which are interbedded with the Mariposa slates and shales.H. A. Weiler and Hal T. Hall, owners of the El Dorado copper property, requested an examination by the Bureau during the latter part of 1914. In December of that year an engineer of the Bureau of Mines visited the mine and recommended the project work undertaken. The purpose was to aid the owners in bringing the property into production of copper and zinc, which at that time was critically essential to the war industries.Complete factual data obtained by the exploration are embodied in this report.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G, Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.Acknowledgment is made to A. O. Inhaled particle contact with pulmonary surfactant in the hypophase lining pulmonary alveoli was modeled in vitro by exposing two respirable sized dusts, kaolin and silica quartz, to lecithin, a major component of pulmonary surfactant, emulsified in physiologic saline. Lecithin adsorbs to the dusts upon incubation at 37º C and suppresses their cytotoxicity as measured by pulmonary macrophage and erythrocyte assays, suggesting that pulmonary surfactant provides a defense system against prompt cell membrane lysis by inhaled dusts. Subsequent pulmonary macrophage phagocytosis and lysosomal enzyme digestion of the coated dusts was modeled in vitro by incubation with phospholipase A2 for one hour. With increasing lipase activity, silica hemolytic potential was restored to native silica levels. Kaolin was retoxified to levels far in excess of native kaolin hemolytic potential. Elution, thin layer chromatography and phosphate assay of treated dusts indicate most lecithin on silica is digested to lysolecithin and desorbed, silica retoxification being due to surface and adherent lysolecithin effects. Most lecithin on kaolin is not digested in this same time; that which is results in adherent lysolecithin which is responsible for the kaolin retoxification. Digestion with phospholipases A2 and C together produces only weakly retoxified kaolin. Results suggest that surface adsorption properties which control the adherence of prophylactic surfactant distinguish the pathogenic potentials of quartz, kaolin and mixed dust.

"Agglomeration processes and agglomerate characteristics are largely controlled by the forces of interaction between particles. The nature and typical magnitude of these interaction forces are evaluated relative to the external forces commonly present in agglomeration systems. The specific roles of the interaction forces in the various stages of agglomerate formation and growth and their effects on the integrity and mechanical strength of agglomerates are briefly reviewed. Because the interaction forces affect different aspects of agglomerate development in different ways, conflicting requirements can arise. Examples of such conflicts are given and used to demonstrate the importance of evaluating the effects of interaction forces etc., in the context of the overall agglomeration process and its ultimate objectives.INTRODUCTIONThe term agglomeration is generally used to refer to processes whereby discrete particles are caused, or allowed, to associate into clumps in which the individual particles retain their identity but are held together by relatively weak, usually physical forces. Various other designations are given to these processes, depending on the specific circumstances under which agglomeration occurs. The terms balling and pelletizing are often used to describe agglomeration in dry or semi-dry powders; coagulation and flocculation are used to refer to agglomeration of particles dispersed in fluids. Common to all of these cases is the fact that the formation, growth and integrity of the agglomerates depend primarily on the forces acting on and between particles. The same forces are, of course, responsible for manyaspects of the behavior of colloidal systems and their study and evaluation constitute the,basis for colloid and interface science.FORCES ACTING ON FINE PARTICLES AND AGGLOMERATES It is convenient to classify the forces acting on and between particles into two general types: external forces and interaction forces. It should he recognized, however, that a sharp distinction is not always possible.External Forces Gravity and inertial forces act on all particles and their magnitude is proportional to particle mass, i.e. they vary with the cube of particle size. Such forces are oftensignificant for large agglomerates but may be negligible for individual, fine particles.Hydrodynamic (""drag"") forces are important, for particles suspended in fluids. For very small particles, the drag force is directly proportional to size (Stokes' Law) while for very large particles or agglomerates it varies with approximately the square of size (Newton's Law). A useful procedure for estimating drag forces over a broad range of particle sizes and physical conditions has been given by Concha (1)."

"The U.S. Bureau of Mines established on August 15, 1983, The Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust (Dust Center) within the Mining and Mineral Resource Research Institutes (MRIs) at The Pennsylvania State University and West Virginia University, and in association with participating MRIs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Minnesota. In 1986, Michigan Technological University (MTU) was awarded a grant through the Dust Center. The center's research program has been developed with recognition of the stated objective of the Federal Mine Safety and Health law, which is ""... (to) permit each miner the opportunity to work underground during the period of his entire adult working life without incurring any disability from pneumoconiosis of any other occupation-related diseases..."" The Dust Center's program is designed to foster an accelerated attack through fundamental research on problems confronting the control of respirable dust in mines. The interactions of the universities and the research program components in the characterization of coal seams, respirable dust particles and the workers lungs are depicted in the logo of the Dust Center.The primary goal of the Dust Center is to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease through advancing fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling, and the interaction of dust and lungs. The Dust Center's research program explores these concerns with the objective of refining existing strategies and developing new respirable dust control techniques that are consistent with the fundamental dust-lung interaction processes that lead to mine worker disability. The work concentrates on: (1) control of dust generation; (2) dilution, dispersion and collection of dust in mine airways; (3) characterization of dust particles; (4) interaction of dust and lungs; and (5) the relationship of the mine environment, geology, and seam characteristics to dust generation and mobility. The fundamental aspects of this work are applicable to the control of respirable dust problems in both hard rock mines and coal mines, and to other dusts such as those generated by diesel equipment. Achieving the Dust Center's goals also involves the training of engineers and scientists, graduate students, and undergraduate students through their respective institutions, and technology transfer to industry. The distribution of personnel in the various universities are presented in Table 1. A directory of Dust Center principal investigators is presented in Appendix 1. A summary of degrees granted and mineral sector employment is presented in Table 2. The subjects of theses developed under the various research projects are presented separately in Volume 7. The center research is fully compatible and complementary with the existing and ongoing U.S. Bureau of Mines activities (see Volume 2). Additionally, the expertise and facilities of the NIOSH--Division of Respirable Disease studies are available as a result of the existing relationship between NIOSH and West Virginia University. Figure 1, Respirable Dust Center Projects and Activities, presents the various projects in the five major areas of investigation and the scope of characterized dust samples, the suite of tests, the sampling and dust generation methods, and the size, chemical and mineralogical analysis performed in the center. Table 3 presents a summary distribution of the 95 publications and presentations that have emanated from the center. In addition there are more than thirty presentations made at each annual Dust Center review meeting. The titles, authors and location of presentation for publications supported by the Dust Center are presented in separate publication volumes for 1984 (Volume 3), 1985 (Volume 4), 1986 (Volume 5) and 1987 (Volume 6)."

This report presents the results of a field and laboratory study by the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the California Division of Mines, of the swelling-type bentonite deposits in the Vallecitos area in San Benito County, Calif. The purpose of the study was to learn if these large deposits contain bentonite of sufficient quality and quantity to be of economic value as an oil-well drilling mud additive. Large amounts of bentonitic clays are used by the petroleum industry as well as the steel industry in California. Additional amounts may be required in the near future as a concrete or earth-fill admixture in constructing dams and canals in the California Central Valley. Depletion of some local clay deposits and loss of others to military installation areas have given new emphasis to the need for developing new bentonite deposits in California.

"INTRODUCTION The predominant characteristic of powdered mica is the thin -plate shape of the particulars, and the thinner the plates, the more enhanced is this characteristic. Consequently, it is frequently desirable to grade mica according to the thickness of the plates. Concerning the various possible methods for grading mica, very little has been published. There is also no information on the relative quantities of mica per given range of plate thickness. This paper presents a graphical method that shows how these quantities are distributed and how the different methods of grading compare.CUMULATIVE BULK DENSITYBulk density, which is an indirect measure of the plate thickness, was determined in a small cylindrical cup of 3.37 cubic centimeters volume. The mica was placed in the cup under a standard procedure. The densities thus measured checked these determined in a 273 cubic centi¬meter cup with less than a 2 percent error.In calculating cumulative densities it is important to know how they are averaged. In any grading operation the bulk density of a series of fractions is determined. Starting with the lowest density fraction, the cumulative percent under-density can be calculated through the various fractions. It is possible that quantity may be measured by volume or weight and that the averaging may be done by a number of methods. However, experimentally it has been shown that the quantity must be by volume and that the averaging must be arithmetic. This is illustrated in table 1, in which the calculated and actual bulk densities are listed."

Cooperation between the United States Bureau of Mines and the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain, continuous since 1924, has made possible this and other papers on safety subjects. Grateful acknowledgment is made to representatives of the Safety in Mines Research Board of the Mines Department for their assistance in arranging visits to several mine safety stations, and to F. R. Wynne, Deputy Chief Inspector of Mines, Great Britain, for arranging visits to mines in Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, and France. During the summer of 1927 the writer had the privilege of visiting the mine safety testing stations in Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, and France, in the order named. All of these countries have large coal mines, many of which are rated as gassy. Therefore, when installation of electrical equipment is contemplated, each of these countries is confronted with the same safety problem as is the United States - the development of electrical equipment that will not ignite gassy mine atmospheres which might, through neglect or accident surround the equipment. The means used by these countries in safeguarding gassy mines should therefore be of general interest to safety engineers of American coal mines, and it is proposed to give a brief survey for each of the four countries mentioned. This paper presents the second of these surveys, which covers conditions in Belgium.

In the summer of 1950, Bureau of Mines engineers visited a number of coal-preparation plants in western Europe and Great Britain to obtain information on European and British coal-cleaning and froth-flotation practices. In view of the growing importance of froth flotation as a process for cleaning fine sizes of coal, it was felt that such data and information would be of value in this country, for, although froth flotation has been adopted for use in a few of our plants, it has not as yet been employed as extensively as in British and European preparation plants. Many of the important coal beds in western Europe, especially in the Ruhr Valley of Germany and in the Dutch coal-mining region of Limburg, Netherlands, are very friable, with the result that the run-of-mine product contains a large proportion of the sizes too fine to be treated successfully by any other method than froth flotation. Furthermore, the relatively high cost of producing coal from these beds has for many years made it economically feasible and desirable to treat the fines by froth flotation, especially in the coking-coal fields.

"As stated earlier the primary goal of the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust is to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease through advancing the fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling and the interaction of dust and lungs. While initial work was directed to coal dust the charge to the dust center has been expanded to include diesel particulates and asbestosis, the latter of deep concern not just to workers in the mineral sector of the economy but also to the general populace.A major facet of Dust Center research has been the analysis and documentation of comprehensive research protocol and procedures that are appropriate state-of-the-art in the various areas of respirable dust. In addition to definition of standardized research protocols and procedures which would be utilized by center personnel for uniformity and reproducability there is a considerable need for utilizing standardized respirable dusts in experiments with consistent, reproducible characteristics which simulate those of actual mine dust. This respirable dust needs to be available in large quantities for a wide variety of research uses that include animal and medical experiments. The dust must be free of the lubricating oils and grinding wheel contaminants that are frequently encountered in laboratory generated dusts.The holistic approach to establishing standardized protocols and procedures applicable to the five major research areas of the center is presented in Figure 5.In one hypothesis, range in coal volatility is considered to be a major causal factor in the incidence and severity of pneumoconiosis. Therefore a suite of characterized standard respirable dust samples have been prepared for researchers from coals representing the western (high volitile A bituminous), central (medium volatile bituminous) and eastern (anthracite) mining areas of Pennsylvania. Quartz, limestone (rockdust) and kaolin clay samples, representing important mineral constituents of coal dust have also been prepared.A suite of medical investigations have been developed utilizing small and medium size animals as well as non-human primates in a variety of dust/lung interaction projects which will be discussed in the next section. A number of respirable dust sampling and dust generation methods have been investigated and selected techniques utilized for both in-mine and in-laboratory research investigations. These will also be discussed in more detail later. A wide range of respirable dust size, chemical and mineralogical analyses have been investigated, standardized and documented for use in various research investigations.This interaction and documentation of various respirable dust sample procedures, animal and medical tests, sampling and dust generation methods, plus size, chemical and minerological analysis applied in the five major areas of research investigation have served to create a very favorable synergism and rapid technology transfer in the respirable dust center."

A nomographical approach is proposed as a fast, easy-to-use, and reason- ably accurate method for estimating expected discounted cash flow (DCF) rate of return and payout time for onshore development drilling and oil production. All costs pertaining to drilling, completing, and equipping development wells, annual expenses of operation, maintenance, and taxes incurred in producing properties, and crude oil prices were considered in developing the nomographs. This report briefly outlines the origin, derivation, and use of the nomographs.

This study was conducted to determine the patterns of heat transfer to water-cooled copper crucibles during vacuum arc melting. Values of heat flux from the ingot to the crucible were determined during nonconsumable electrode vacuum arc melting of zirconium and during consumable electrode vacuum arc melting of titanium) zirconium) and steel. The results of these studies con-firm the existence of a high thermal resistance between the ingot and the crucible wall which results from the shrinkage of the ingot as the metal solidifies. Maximum heat flux occurs near the top of the ingot where maximum values of heat flux of 1.4 X 106 Btu/ft2 hr were observed during small-scale consumable electrode arc melting of zirconium and titanium. The maximum heat flux for consumable electrode arc melting of 8-inch-diameter ingots was 0.5 X 106 Btu/ft2 hr. The effects of electrode material) electrode diameter) arc current) and arc potential on heat flux from the ingot to the crucible were studied. Data were also obtained on crucible wall temperatures and on the effect of very narrow annular water jackets.

Relative enthalpies of V20S from 298.15 to 1,101.0 K were measured at the Bureau of Mines to provide data needed for the advancement of min-eral technology. Enthalpies were measured with a copper-block calorimeter. A sharp melting point was found at 951 K, with [~~ = 15.690 kcal/ mol ] for the standard enthalpy of melting. Tabulated values are given at selected temperature increments between 298.15 and 1,500 K for the standard relative enthalpy [(HO -H~98),] heat capacity (CpO), entropy (SO), and Gibbs energy function [-(Go -H298)/T]. Standard relative enthal-pies are also given in equation form and combined with data from the literature to derive values of standard enthalpies of formation and Gibbs energies of formation.

"During the development of the sulphur dioxide leaching process for the treatment of ""mixed"" copper ores at the Southwest experiment station of the Bureau of Mines*** the pulp from treatment of roasted cupriferous pyrite with sulphur dioxide gases and water showed an unexpected amount of sulphuric acid. After following out several false premises it was found that this was due to iron in the solution, and also that this iron tended to oxidize to the ferric state if the concentration of sulphur dioxide in the roaster gases used did not rise above a certain figure. While the percentage of iron present was email it was enough to cause an entirely different set of conditions from those of the original sulphur dioxide leaching process and to promise a much wider application of the general idea. Sulphurous acid dissolves only certain copper minerals, sulphuric acid solutions certain additional minerals and ferric sulphate solutions certain further additional copper minerals, so this observation was of importance in connection with possibilities in the hydrometallurgy of the so-called ""mixed"" or partly oxidized copper ores.The work has been carried along by a number of experimenters. L. R. Eckman, junior chemist of the Southwest station, contributed largely to the early developments. L. Roberts, W. D. Bonner and C. G. Maier each in turn physical chemists at the Pacific Experiment station, (Berkeley, Calif.) have studied the reactions involved. A complete report of all the work on this process will be prepared later under the direction of O. C. Rolston. The purpose of the present paper is to place a summary of the more practical phases of this seemingly important piece of work before those interested."

About 300 tons of gold ore per week was being produced in February 1934 by Thomas D, Herron and Con Laster from the old lake Superior and Arizona workings; the ground was leased from the Magma Copper Co. The workings adjoined but were not a part of the Magma mine. The lessees had been employees of the Magma Copper Co, at the time the Magma closed down for the summer of 1932. Work on the lease began in July 1932 on an exposure of $2-per-ton ore disclosed in a drift; after a few hand-drilled rounds were blasted the gold content increased to about $30 per ton. Extensive sampling by pannings elsewhere of exposed portions of the vein indicated that other ore shoots existed. The last work previously done in the mine was during the World War, when lessees mined a number of small shoots of copper ore. In some of the stapes the copper miners had left a quartzose streak on the hanging wall that carried $15 per ton of gold. This material did not look as if it cried values and evidently never had been sampled. The first shipment of gold ore was made on September 28, 1932. Up to April 1, 1933, 3,778 tons had been shipped and from September 1, 1933, to January 31, 1934, 3,125 tons.

This paper gives the cost and describes the mining of 55 tons of nickel-bearing rock by hand methods from a prospect in southern Nevada, June 15, 1937, by the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines. The geology, mineralogy, and problems related to future development also are discussed briefly. The main object was to obtain a 55-ton sample within the limited period during which funds were available; little time was available to make a first-hand detailed study of the possibility of commercial ore deposits being found. The sample was desired by the Metallurgical Division of the Bureau for experimental purposes at the Electro-Metallurgical Station at Boulder City, Nev. The term "ore" is used loosely in the following discussion to designate dike material containing nickel and copper, without consideration of its commercial value. "The wide publicity that is given to the discover; of new oil fields has led many people to believe that our supply of crude petroleum is practically in- exhaustible and that in order to keep pace with the demand for petroleum products, it is only necessary to drill a few more wells in some of the south-western states. It is not generally realized that, although many famous fields have been developed in Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas and Louisiana during the past few years, the production of crude oil in 1919 was not sufficient to meet the demand and it was necessary to import approximately 53,000,000 barrels from Mexico.Continued efforts are being made to recover a larger percentage of the oil underground by improvements in methods of drilling and in handling producing properties. Improvements are also being made in methods for handling the oil after it has reached the surface which will result in reducing losses through leakage and through evaporation. These methods for cutting down waste in production and storage, if universally adopted, will no doubt result in appreciable increases in our supply of crude oil."
