"INTRODUCTION The Mining Branch of the Bureau of Mines has used the wagon drill to sample mineral deposits in New Mexico. This method of sampling was successful and con¬stituted an important phase of the work on five exploratory projects undertaken in 1943, 1944, and 1945. The deposits varied in topographic features, geology, mineral content, and in the physical characteristics of the rocks drilled. The altitudes ranged from 630 to 7,800 feet. Three hundred and seventeen holes totaling 6,852 feet were drilled. The deepest hole was 66 feet; the average depth was a little less than 22 feet.The results of the above-mentioned work form the basis of this report. Special attention is given to the later and more improved techniques used. This report was written with the expectation that the procedures might prove advantageous to others in the exploration and sampling of near-surface mineral de¬posits, and that a more extended use of the technique might result.AcknowledgmentsAcknowledgment is due Charles H. "INTRODUCTION Aerosols (5 um have not been shown to be consistently generated and characterized in inhalation chambers. Particle deposition in the lungs however may occur with particles as large as 25 um(1). Therefore, in order to closely simulate the atmosphere of an underground coal mine where the distribution is bimodal, with modes at S and 15 um (2), particles much greater than <1 um must be characterized for uniform mixing and size distribution within these chambers. The Hazelton Animal Exposure Chamber has been chosen because it has been best characterized for smaller particles (<1 um) (3), and is the major type used by most inhalation toxicology institutes such as Lovelace Inhalation Toxicology Institute and Battelle Northwest Laboratory.BACKGROUNDPreviously published studies on the inhalation of solid aerosols have attempted to characterize the distrition of particles of <2 um in diameter. There are no published reports of extensive work characterizing either the size distribution of particles <1 um or the concentration throughout the exposure chamber (Table 1).Table 1 shows the variability and sizes of several aerosols <1 um in diameter used in five previous chamber studies.Discussion of Previous StudiesThe study done by Bauermash, Bryan, Dickinson, and Burke (4)stated two major concerns in the development of the 6.5 ft. diameter chamber. The first was that a quantity of animals could be exposed to the same concentration regardless of the location of the animal, and second was that the chamber could be easily cleaned and decontaminated. The solution to the first concern required a circular chamber with the contamination air entering the chamber somewhere along the central axis. The animals could then be changed during exposure time so that each animal was exposed throughout the total volume."

In June 1942 , ' the Bureau of Mines selected the Zonia copper mine , near Kirkland , Yavapai County , Arizona , as a property meriting investigation in connection with its search for supplies of strategic minerals for use in the war . The following month , representatives of the War Production . Board conferred with Bureau officials and requested that the property be explored with the object of determining the tonnage and grade of ore that could be brought into production quickly and mined cheaply by open-pit methods . The work wa's designed to verify information submitted by the owners in support of an application for a Government loan. It was essential that the investigations be completed promptly , so that operations might be planned and copper produced for war needs . The investigations called for surface trenching , diamond drilling , and check sampling of underground workings . Unable to purchase equipment for trenching without considerable delay , the Bureau saved time by borrowing most of the necessary items from the Golden Queen mine of the Gold Fields Development Co. at Mohave , Calif. This company , whose engineers had sampled some of the old trenches , had a tentative agreement with the owners to operate and manage the Zonia mine in event the loan was granted . Additional equipment was borrowed from two Governmental agencies . The exploratory work , completed in 16 weeks , was carried on 7 days a week .

The rate of oxidation of coals with nitric acid has been used by earlier investigators4 5 6/ for determining fusain and for studying petrographic composition. These workers accumulated considerable evidence indicating that, for coals ranging from lignite to low-volatile in rank, the method gives values for fusain that agree satisfactorily with those obtained by optical methods. One group5/even concluded that, when discrepancies are noted between results obtained by chemical and microscopic methods, the results based on the oxidation reaction are probably the more reliable. Unfortunately, after concluding that the method was valid, most of these workers apparently lost interest. As a result, no attempt to exploit or apply the method to problems of utilization has been reported. Recent studies of the influence of inert petrographic constituents on the properties of cokes made from various coals7/ have indicated a need for additional means of characterizing coals and blends used for carbonization.

A radon survey was made at five different locations in the Twilight mine near Uravan, Colo., to determine chances in radon concentrations in an inactive mine. Data were taken with a continuous monitor set for 1-minute count periods and readings were taken 24 hours a day for 9 days. The 12 readings per station each hour accurately showed how t w radon concentration varied during the day. From the data collected from the intake portal to station 4, the average radon emanation rate was estimated at 18 picocuries per second per square foot (pCi/sec/ft3). A daily cycle in radon concentration was detected that apparently was related to barometric pressure change.

"INTRODUCTION During the course of research on the beneficiation of the Big Seam iron ores of Birmingham, Ala., an urgent need was felt for quick iron assays of grab samples for mill control. Since the gangue minerals in these ores - quartz, limestone, and clay - all have about the same specific gravity, the use of a specific-gravity method was anticipated as a means of measuring the iron content. The idea of estimating the composition of a mineral mixture by measuring its specific gravity is by no means new. However, the usual method of carry in out this idea proved unreliable when applied to the Big Seam ores. The usual rapid method of determining specific gravity consists of measuring the volume of a known weight of sample that has been dried at high temperature. The inadequacy of this method led to the development of the rapid, modified, specific-gravity determination described in this paper.This work- was an incidental development resulting from research on beneficiation of iron ores by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and ore producing companies of the Birmingham district."

During the first quarter of 1973 ADL worked closely with PMSRC staff, under an extremely compressed time schedule, on all aspects of the detailed planning, organization and overall coordination and preparation of the lectures and in-mine demonstrations for the Bureau&apos;s Technology Transfer Seminar on Mine Communications given in March of 1973 to representatives of the mining industry. Our efforts centered on the detailed organization and preparation of each of the five technical seminar lectures and associated supporting material, and the coordination of tasks assigned to ADL and other seminar participants. Revised and expanded drafts of the seminar papers were prepared from rough draft versions obtained from PMSRC, Collins Radio and ADL staff. Measurements were made to gather key data on the operation and performance of each of the following systems installed in the Bruceton Safety Research Mine; call alert paging, roof bolt paging, section wireless radio, and guided wireless radio systems. These data were analyzed, manufacturer&apos;s equipment specifications utilized, and calculations made to provide performance curves and data for each of the above systems. A substantial amount of artwork was conceived and prepared for 35 m slides, system identification posters in the mine, and seminar handouts. This artwork included some forty 8-1/2" x 11" line sketches, graphs, block diagrams, circuit diagrams, coverage maps, and other line drawings; five 30" x 40" block diagram system identification posters suitable for in-mine use; a 20" x 30" detail perspective illustration of a representative coal mine layout; forty viewgraphs; and seventy 35 m slides of the artwork and word charts. Conferences, discussions and review sessions were held with conference participants to help coordinate the various efforts, obtain technical information, and make final plans regarding the lecture presentations, associated visual aids, and the communication system installations to be demonstrated in the Bruceton mine. These meetings included final systems checkouts and dry run presentations and reviews of the lectures and mine demonstrations. This phase of the seminar effort concluded with R. Lagace and R. Spencer of ADL participating in two days of seminar presentations in the lecture hall and in the Bruceton mine.

Calculations based on data related to the electrostatic precipitator illustrate the variation in the electric forces on a particle with change in position in the ionized field. The feeble forces in some separators are explained by the low field intensity at midpoint locations between the electrodes. When the particles are in contact with the exterior surface of a rotating cylindrical electrode, a high field intensity at the electrode surface combined with the image charge results in large electric forces. The permissible feed velocity increases as the square root of the electrode diameter, providing high values in efficiency and feed rate capacity, particularly in surface-to-mass ratio separations such as are encountered in secondary materials recycling operations.

"The demand for open-hearth iron ore and the existence of suitable smelting facilities in the St. Louis area seemed to warrant investigation of several Missouri iron-ore deposits of the filled-sink type. Preliminary examinations were made in the autumn of 1944 by an engineer3/ of the Bureau of Nines, and in December of the same year funds were allotted for the exploration of these properties by churn drilling. Three properties, the Silver Hollow Bank and the Newbauer and Coleman properties, were drilled. Work was completed May 8, 1945.The Federal Geological Survey and the Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources assisted in the project by determining the stratigraphy from drill cuttings and by mapping the drilled areas.The properties explored are in the hilly section of east-central Missouri and are connected by all-weather graveled roads with various shipping points of the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway system within 3 to 6 miles of each property.The Silver Hollow Bank, in sec., 8, T, 40 N., R. l W. Franklin County, Missouri, is in the Meramec State Game Reserve. The nearest town and shipping point is Sullivan, Mo„ which is 6 miles distant. The Newbauer property, in sec. 28, T. 41 N., R, 2 W., Franklin County, Missouri, is approximately 3 miles west of Stanton; The Coleman property, in sec. 14, T. 38 N., R. 3 W., Crawford. County, Missouri, is within a short hauling distance of the railway at Elayer, Mb. These are shown on figure 1.The region surrounding the explored areas contains a series of low-lying hills or ridges and narrow winding valleys drained by the Meramec River system. These hills seldom rise more than 200 feet above the valley floors, most of which are approximately 700 feet above sea level. Except for numerous small farms and a few small towns, the entire region is covered by a dense growth of timber and small brush. The St. Louis-San Francisco Railway system, U. S. Highway 66, and numerous all-weather State and county roads traverse the area."

The Bureau of Mines equipped a longwall shearer with a water-jet-assisted cutting system and measured dust levels during the cutting of a simulated coal block. The block was cut dry, at a conventional water spray pressure of 190 psi, and with water-jet-assisted cutting pressures ranging from 1,000 to 6,000 psi. At water pressures of 3,000 psi and higher, dust concentrations were reduced by as much as 85 pct via water-jet-assisted cutting in comparison with conventional water sprays. This reduction was achieved without any increase in the water flow rate.

"One of the proposed mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of silicosis is that inhaled silica dust activates a ""respiratory burst"" in pulmonary phagocytes, such as macrophages and neutrophils. This increase in oxidative metabolism results in enhanced generation of reactive oxygen species which if produced in excess, would overwhelm natural defense mechanisms and cause damage to the lung parenchyma. This damage would then result in scarring, fibrosis, and decreased gas exchange.Weiss and LoBuglio' have listed several oxygen species produced by phagocytes which may be involved in cellular injury. These oxidants include superoxide anion, hydrogen, peroxide, hydroxyl radical, and hypochlorous acid. Superoxide anion (0;) is generated from molecular oxygen by the plasma membrane bound enzyme NADPH oxidase according to the following reaction:Once generated, superoxide anion can form hydrogen peroxide:In the presence of myeloperoxidase and halide, hydrogen peroxide can form hypochlorous acid:Superoxide and hydrogen peroxide can also form highly reactive hydroxyl radicals. Hydroxyl radicals can be generated slowly by the Haber-Weiss reaction:In addition. hydroxyl radical production can be catalyzed via the Fenton reaction:Hydroxyl radicals can also be generated from the reaction of superoxide and hypochlorous acid as follows:Recent investigations suggest that, in addition to the reactive oxygen species discussed above, nitric oxide may be a potential mediator of silica-induced toxicity.2-4 Nitric oxide (NO') can be generated by the cytosolic enzyme nitric oxide synthase according to the following reaction:NO synthase exists in two forms. i.e.. a constitutive. Ca2+-calmodulin-dependent form and an inducible. Ca2+-calmodulin-independent form. In pulmonary phagocytes. the activity of the constitutive form of NO synthase is low. However. NO synthase can be induced in macrophages and neutrophils by a variety of stimulants such as lipopolysaccharide. interferon y. chemotactic peptide, platelet activating factor, or leukotriene B4.3.5Once generated. nitric oxide can combine with superoxide anion to form peroxynitrite as follows:Peroxynitrite is a potent oxidizing agent. In addition, peroxynitrite can form peroxynitrous acid. which in turn can produce hydroxyl radical and nitrogen dioxide (all of which exhibit strong oxidizing potential) by the following reactions:Oxygen metabolites have been shown to cause lung damage in vivo.6 Such damage includes edema. leakiness of the alveolar endothelial/epithelial barriers, and airway constriction.7 Superoxide and hydrogen peroxide have been associated with membrane damage and cell lysis.8 These oxidants have also been associated with alteration of cytoskeletal structures at cell-cell junctions and elevation of transepithelial conductance in cultured monolayers.9 Macrophages or neutrophils can be stimulated by bacteria or phorbol myristate acetate to produce sufficient oxidant levels to lyse lymphoma cells.10 This cell killing is inhibited by catalase but is unaffected by superoxide dismutase. hydroxyl radical scavengers. or azide. i.e., an inhibitor of peroxidase. This implicates hydrogen peroxide as the active oxidant. Similarly. Weiss et al.11 have reported that hydrogen peroxide is critical in the death of cultured endothelial cells due to neutrophil activation. In addition. hydroxyl radicals generated by monocytes have been associated with cell injury.12 Lastly. peroxynitrite has been shown to oxidize sulfhydryl groups and to inactivate proteinase inhibitor making the lung more susceptible to damage caused by phagocytotic enzymes.' Therefore. a strong case can be made that activated pulmonary macrophages and neutrophils are capable of causing oxidant injury. This chapter presents in vitro and in vivo data indicating that silica is associated with the production of reactive oxygen species from these pulmonary phagocytes."

Those of the oil-shale operators in this country who are sincerely attempting to make a real industry out of oil-shale developments, are anxious to obtain fundamental data on the retorting of oil-shale; particularly as regards the effect of certain variable factors in the process of retorting on the quantity and quality of products yielded from oil shales when they are subjected to destructive distillation. From careful examination of a con siderable number of suggested processes for treating oil shales and the con flicting ideas on which they are designed, it seems probable that accurate information of a fundamental nature is highly essential to the successful establishment of an oil-shale industry in this country. . Accordingly, the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the State of Colorado, is undertaking to furnish some definite and impartial information of this type through investigations now under way at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo. A retort for the distillation of oil from oil shale has been designed and installed, together with the necessary auxiliary equipment for controlling and determining variable factors of distillation, and for recovering and de termining the quantity and quality of the products yielded from the shales. The retort is of such a nature that conditions of retorting can be accurately . and completely controlled, and varied at will. It is not designed as a com mercial retort, but only for research purposes. A testing laboratory with equipment necessary for the examination of the shales, physically and chemic ally, and the products yielded by them, has also been fitted up . The material used in the investigations is oil shale obtained from the DeBeque, Colorado, shale field. It yields on distillation in the Bureau of Mines testing apparatus, about 42 gallons of oil to the ton, and is there fore a fairly representative sample of the shales that probably will be first worked in Colorado. The shale used will be as uniform as possible in character and oil yield and will all be obtained from the same seam at the same point, in order to avoid the introduction of unnecessary variable factors in the tests and to render results strictly comparable •

The Bureau of Mines investigated chemical methods for producing high- purity gold from precious-metal-bearing zinc precipitates and steel wool cathodes. Precious-metal-bearing zinc precipitates and steel wool cathodes are unrefined products from conventional cyanidation and heap leaching-cyanidation operations. The zinc precipitates contained 14,40 pct Au and 0.35 pct Ag. The precious-metal-bearing steel wool cathodes contained 20.65 pct Au and 4.84 pct Ag. The precipitates and cathodes were treated with dilute acid to solubilize the silver and/or base metals. The gold-bearing residue was leached in dilute aqua reqia to solubilize the gold. High-purity gold was precipitated from the aqua regia solution with oxalic acid, sulfurous acid, sodium bisulfite, and gaseous sulfur dioxide. The leaching-precipitation experiments recovered 99.9 pct of the gold. The gold precipitates ranged in fineness from 997 to 999 fine. The chemical refining method provides a viable technique for the smaller operator to produce high-purity gold without using pyrometallurgical refining methods.

The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis consists of the formation of long-chain hydrocarbons by passage of carbon monoxide-hydrogen mixtures over metal catalysts, usually based on iron, cobalt, nickel, or ruthenium, at temperatures in the range 180°-300° C., and at pressures of 1-15 atmospheres. Although the reaction has been known and studied for more than 20 years, the mechanism by which it occurs is still poorly understood. One approach to understanding is to consider the effect upon the course of the synthesis of variations in each of the important operating variables. Consideration of the experimental data pertaining to these variables may suggest an over-all picture describing the synthesis - a picture which, in turn, would have to be consistent with all the known facts. The first part of this paper will be concerned with such a consideration of operating variables; the second portion will discuss recent work pertaining to the role of metal carbides as intermediates in the synthesis.

Volume-rate-of-flow measurements were made of the flow of mercury through porous samples under conditions of no field, magnetic field transverse to the direction of flow, and transverse magnetic field and electric current to determine if a magnetic method might be potentially useful in the study of pore-size distribution. No change was observed in the flow rate from the application of a magnetic field alone. The application of both field and current produced an electromagnetic pumping action with or against the direction of flow, depending upon the direction of the electric current. This pumping effect was observed to be greater in a rectangular porcelain sample than the calculated value for an equal-Sized open channel.

While conducting an investigation on electrolytic reduction of magnesium oxide in 1943, it became necessary to obtain accurate data on the conductivity and density of various mixtures of fused chlorides. AZ the required information was not available in the technical literature, or there were inconsistencies in the data from several investigators, an independent study was made at the Bureau of. Mines laboratory at Salt Lake City on the conductivity and density of the molten chlorides MgCl2, CaCl2, BaCl2, KCl, and NaCl and the binary mixtures of MgCl2 with the other four chlorides. Studies were also made on the binary system KCl-CaCl2 and on certain portions of several ternary systems. Measurements covered a temperature range from the melting point to 1,000° C. The results of this study were reported in an intra-Bureau report prepared early in 1944. Since then the Bureau of Mines has received several requests for data on fused chlorides; the results of the previous study, therefore, are being published to make the data available.

The apparatus described was developed for determining the kinetics of gas - solid reactions at high temperatures by measuring the volume of gas consumed with respect to time . This apparatus consists essentially of a horizontal precision- bore glass tube connecting a small reaction chamber in a furnace to a large constant - temperature reservoir . A drop of mercury in the tube separates the two sides of the system and serves as an indicator that moves at a speed proportional to the rate of gas consumption . The sensitivity of the apparatus depends inversely on both the density of the gas in the system and the cross - sectional area of the tube ; with a tube having an area of 0.079 cm² , the sensitivity for oxygen at 308 ° K and 0.5 atm is 20 cm/mg . The reproducibility of data with the volumetric apparatus is good .

In this island, which is a Crown colony of the British Empire, and where remarkably extensive remains of ancient mining operations-- mainly for copper--exist, the mining law of Turkey governs, rith such modifications as were made necessary by the transfer of the country in 1878 from Turkey to Great Britain, and with such fer ameliorations thereof as have since been ordered by the local authorities. The Turkish law to which Van agenen refers is, no doubt, "2 Shaban, 1285," which though subsequently repealed with respect to Turkey is still in force in Cyprus, inasmuch as the mines regulations (amendment) law of 1925 "is to be read in connection with 2 Shaban, 1285" (articles 61 to 67 of which were repealed by the law of 1925): In the preparation of this digest; access was had to the mines regula- tions (amendment) Iaw, No. 5 of 1882; which Van Wagenen does not mention. Other Cyprian laws, passed since the publication of Van Wagenen's work in 1918, are the following: Eines regulations (amendment) law, 1925, No. 12 of 1925; mining-prospecting permits; notification, No. 539 of 1927; mines regu- lations 1926, No. 1006 of 1926; mines regulations (amendment) rules of court, 1926, No. 144 of 1926; mines regulations (amendment). 1a, 1928, ko. 3 of 1528 (as amended by No. 32 of 1928). Most of these làrs are concerned with the regulation of actual mining operation--safety and sanitary provisions; and, therefore, they ado little important information. The Cyprian Government's official publication says: It is considered that the laws regulating mining in Cyprus are inadequate and antiquated, and a thorough revision is necessary to bring them up to a standard of modern mining practice and to encourage mining ventures in the island. As a preliminary to this the mines regulations, 1926, were issued to govern the workings of the larger mines; and serious attention is now being given to the regulating of prospecting, quarries, machinery in mines, and generally to the bringing of mining in Cyprus into conformity with the other mining countries of the world.

Because economic and geographic factors have focused particular attention on the use of anthrafines in blends containing Lower Kittanning coal as the low-volatile component, samples from this particular bed were selected for experimentation whenever practical. Carbonizing tests were carried out in accordance with standard procedures, using the Tuscaloosa and sole-heated ovens. Most of the results are in general agreement with those reported by previous investigators. Specific findings are as follows: (1) The effectiveness of anthrafines in reducing coal expansion is such that even highly expanding, low-volatile coals can be carbonized safely with suitable additions of anthrafines and careful control of charge density. (2) Increases in coke size, resistance to shatter, and apparent specific gravity appear to be characteristic for additions up to approximately 15 percent to a fixed base blend. When anthracite of minus-48-mesh size was used and the proportion of low-volatile coal simultaneously increased, these indexes increased only slightly or remained substantially constant. (3) No increase in breeze formation was noted for additions in amounts up to 15 percent. (4) Abradability of coke was increased by additions of anthracite of No. 5 Buckwheat size, but it either decreased or remained sub¬stantially constant when the inert was ground to pass a 48-mesh screen.
