The Federal Bureau of Mines examined ilmenite-bearing sands in southern Texas as part of a program to discover sources of supply for the domestic titanium industry. Deposits were examined from May 1956 through January 1959 in the outcrops of sandstone beds in the Jackson group of Eocene formations in Lee, Burleson, Fayette, and Starr Counties on the Gulf Coastal Plain; in alluvial valley fill in Brewster County in southwest Texas; in the sand beaches of Matagorda Peninsula and the Galveston, Padre, and Brazos Islands--part of the offshore chain of barrier islands along the Texas coast; and in unconsolidated sediments in Willacy County on the Rio Grande delta in the southeast Texas.

Bastnasite is a natural fluocarbonate of the cerium group and affords an abundant and high-grade source of the lighter rare-earth elements. As part of a broad research program in rare-earth element technology, the Federal Bureau of Mines directed extensive experimental work to separating and purifying the rare-earth elements in bastnasite. By the use of a combination of techniques--classical chemical, ion exchange, and solvent extraction--the processing of a bastnasite concentrate to obtain the individual rare-earth elements, or groups of elements, was accomplished. A bastnasite concentrate, containing about 60 percent rare-earth oxides, was sulfated with concentrated sulfuric acid to eliminate the carbon dioxide, fluorine, and silica. Calcination at 1,200° F. made the gangue matter insoluble, thus permitting the separation of the soluble rare-earth sulfates. Essentially 100 percent of the rare-earth elements were recovered by this procedure. Since the rare-earth sulfate solution contained only trace amounts of nonrare-earth elements, subsequent separation procedures were simplified.

This paper on milling methods and costs at a flat river (Mo.), mill is one of a series of information circulars on milling methods and costs which is being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines, The mill under consideration treats 5,000 tons of load ore daily by table concentration and flotation. It is 25 years old, and yet it is a new mill. Research has been in continual progress at the plant since its beginning, and accordingly a day never passes without a record of change for advancement. The changes have been so orderly that no evidence of obsolete equipment remains.

At the Groveland-mine iron ore is mined by open-pit methods and concentrated by means of spirals and flotation. A brief history of the mine and its early development is given. Various methods of monitoring slip movements on bedding planes, as well as examination of rock burst damage in stopes, suggests that rock bursts in the Lucky Friday Mine are closely associated with these movements. Slip displacements along bedding simultaneously reduce the physical dimensions of stopes and increase compressive stress along stope margins. Such changes, in turn, contribute directly to rock bursts and the sudden failure of volumes of rock and cemented sandfill surrounding stopes. The distribution of seismicity and several mining-induced and premining structures resemble those described in South African gold mines. These suggest fundamental similarities in seismic sources and mechanisms of rock burst damage.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes a viewing transformation algorithm that generates a perspective view of a three-dimensional scene. This tool may be used by researchers to improve mine safety by assessing the visual capabilities of a mobile equipment operator. Three-dimensional transformations used to build the viewing transformation and techniques used to project the image onto a two-dimensional display screen are defined. The algorithm is written in the C-programming language and designed to stress portability, allowing it to work without significant modifications on numerous computers. A listing of the computer routines along with sample output is included in the report.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted a survey to determine potential exposure of mine workers to dust produced in connection with intermittent rock drilling in coal mines. Eighteen mines in 3 states were visited, and 30 different operations were observed, as follows: 10 drilling in draw slate, 8 drilling top rock for brushing or grading, 2 drilling in the coal face, 4 drilling in the bottom, 2 drilling top rock for overcasts, 2 drilling in faults or boulders, 1 drilling for roof bolting, and 1 drilling for trolley hangers. Dust respirators were worn by drilling crews during 16 of the 30 operations. Three hundred thirty-two samples of air-borne dust were collected during the survey. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The information in this report is based on samples collected and observations made in bituminous-coal mines. Operating officials at these mines have contributed to this study, and their cooperation is gratefully acknowledged. All samples were counted by Thomas B. Kirby, chemist, and Dominick A. The jig men of the Tri-State (Joplin-Miami) zinc district complain about the flakiness of their mill feed. They believe that the flakiness of the composite grains of gangue and mineral are to blame for losses of zinc; that is, that the flaky grains in the jig tailings have higher zinc tenor than the cubical grains. Although the evidence which follows contradicts this belief, no effort is made to give a final and conclusive answer. On the other hand, there is outlined a positive and mechanical method which the operator may use to pursue this and similar investigations. DISCUSSION OF SCREENING METHOD Hand-sorting is obviously not satisfactory for separating cubical grains from flaky grains because the personal influence can not be removed. Screens, however, may be used with success. A set of each of two types of screens is required; namely, the square-hole type and the rectangular (rectang, oblong) type. The square-hole screens must be of the double Tyler scale; that is, the order of the sieves should be after the fourth root of two instead of the customary square root of two; close sizing is important. The size of the rectang screens may be selected by trials so that a part of the material already closely sized on the square-hole screens, will pass the oblong holes. Obviously, the cubical grains will remain on the rectang and the flaky grains will pass through. Hence the mode of operation is to screen first on square-hole screens and then split the products on the oblong-hole screens.

This report describes the response to high- temperature sulfatization of a variety of manganese minerals and companion compounds which may occur either as a principal component or as a gangue material in low- grade manganese deposits . Fourteen manganese samples representing oxide , carbonate , and silicate minerals as well as seven compounds which might occur as gangue with manganese minerals were tested batchwise in a bench- scale apparatus under conditions which would be favorable for the sulfatization of manganese . The manganese minerals substantiated thermodynamic predictions and responded to sulfatization but to varying degrees . The gangue materials , MgO , MgCO,, CaO , and CaCO3 , were sulfatized readily in contrast to the iron oxides and the aluminacontaining material which were not .

The U.S. Bureau of Mines used the East Fork Pine Creek watershed to conduct a pilot study for an inactive and abandoned mine lands inventory, during which techniques and methodologies would be developed for subsequent inventories. A total of 177 waste dump samples, 191 mill tailings samples, and 36 stream sediment samples were collected. Water samples were collected from 18 sample sites during five sampling events. Waste dump, tailings, and stream sediment samples were analyzed for antimony, arsenic, cadmium, copper, iron, lead, mercury, and zinc. Results indicate a multidisciplinary approach is necessary: disciplines should include geology, geostatistis, geochemistry, geophysics, biology, hydrology, and remote sensing; small prospects do not generally contribute to watershed contamination, major mine and mill sites may contribute metal enriched sediment of metal enriched water; speciation studies and bioavailability studies are important.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in partnership with Strata Products tested the sealing capability of Ventstop®? as part of an ongoing mine fire control and suppression research program. Ventstop®? is a multi-purpose, inflatable device that is produced by Minvent Solutions and is available world wide for use in the metal and nonmetal mining industry. Ventstop®? is also used in the Australian coal industry as a temporary ventilation control device. The device can be quickly deployed, is reusable and can be placed in horizontal and vertical mine voids to control dust, fumes and smoke. Deployment, multi-day inflation and air leakage tests were conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory to determine the capability and limitations of Ventstop®? in a simulated coal mine setting. During the tests, Ventstop®? was also subjected to low level forces of a nearby methane gas ignition. It is thought that Ventstop®? could be used by the US coal mining industry to temporarily close an underground mine area in response to a fire or spontaneous combustion heating event, to temporarily redirect mine ventilation during longwall equipment moves or during stopping construction. This paper describes this inflatable temporary mine sealing technology and presents the results of the NIOSH tests. The Bureau of Mines tested cores from 35 wells from 14 oil-producing zones in southern Illinois, southern Indiana, and western Kentucky to determine why rates of water injection were apparently low in some zones. Since these zones contain only minor amounts of clay minerals, it is concluded that permeability reduction results from movement of dislodged silica particles and other material, including the clays, that lines the pores. Both single-phase and two-phase permeability measurements, however, indicated that most samples had only low to moderate water sensitivity, so that permeability reduction due to such particle movement should usually not be of practical significance. The effective permeability to water was considerably lower than the effective permeability to oil during two-phase flow measurements, as is typical of most reservoir rocks. It can be concluded, therefore, that relatively high injection pressures will be required in waterflooding thin zones or zones having low permeabilities.

This computer program determines the price per ton of coal needed to obtain a profit of 12 percent discounted cash flow. From a predetermined equipment and manning list, the program calculates all costs and prints seven tables, Including the equipment and manning tables and the discount cash flow table. Forty-four of the input variables may be readily changed to study their effects upon the final price per ton of coal or upon individual cost items. The method is adaptable for any type of mining and with additions, for beneficiation processes. This program was written in Fortran IV for use on the IBM 11302 and with few modifications can be used on other computers.

GENERAL INFORMATIONSince its introduction into coal mines, the use of Airdox has grown in popularity, especially in the Indiana and Illinois coal fields. Its use permits breaking dawn coal on shift, whereas the use of explosives for blasting coal on shift is prohibited by law in those States. Many of the hazards connected with the use of explosives are eliminated. The accident experience in the use of Airdox has been excellent with respect to the number of fatalities or serious injuries per million tons mined.The Federal Mine Safety Code specifies that Airdox lines should be grounded at the compressor and at other points of low resistance along the lines but should not be connected to tracks, pipe lines, or other possible power conductors. The Bureau of Mines conducted phosphate beneficiation studies to determine the influence of mineralogical and textural features on the recovery of phosphate from select bed and composite samples representing different phosphate rock types of the western Phosphoria Formation. Batch heavy-liquid tests showed that ore grade) pellet size, and type of interstitial material were significant parameters affecting concentrate grade and recovery. Recoveries at acid grade (31.5 percent P2O5) ranged from 98 to 56 percent. Liberation was essentially complete at 28 mesh, and recoveries tended to drop when overgrinding occurred.

The data in this circular were taken from publications of the United States Bureau of Mines and published annual reports of the Wyoming State Inspector of Coal Mines. The tables included are complete only' with regard to major disasters; the Bureau of Mines considers a major disaster one in which 5 or more men are killed. However, minor disasters and gas ignitions recorded in these publications are included. It is known that a number of gas ignitions have occurred of which no record is available. This is one of a series of papers by the Bureau of Mines giving by States available data regarding coal-mine explosions. This information is published in condensed form in the belief that it may be of vale to mine operators in preventing future coal-mine explosions.

This report presents the results of laboratory mineral-dressing investigations by the Bureau of Mines of 14 individual or composite character samples from deposits in the Batesville manganese district. It will be noted that some concentrates have met or approached analytical specifications for metallurgical manganese ore although great variations in both physical and chemical composition from once deposit to another make each a new problem. In most cases it is evident that a substantial loss of manganese has occurred in the various slime and tailing products. An important aspect of this work is the research being conducted on manganese-bearing limestones. Recent reconnaissance indicates that this resource constitutes one of the major domestic reserves of manganese. Laboratory study has shown that ferrograde concentrates can be recovered from samples of manganese-bearing limestones from two properties. Research on samples from other areas is still underway.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted considerable research to improve life support technology for underground mining applications. This proceedings volume presents several new developments that may help increase the chances of mine workers in surviving underground disasters. Several papers address the performance of present self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR's) and provide proposed guidelines for the design and testing of a second-generation SCSR. Improvements In the safety and effectiveness of mine rescue and recovery operations are described, including the design of a low-profile rescue breathing apparatus and a rescue team helmet.
