This report presents the results obtained in a study of the technical feasibility of recovering a usable pig iron by pyrometallurgical treatment of typical copper reverberatory slags . The iron in the slag was readily reduced with carbon , but the copper and sulfur content of the metal was best controlled by a three - stage procedure comprising ( 1 ) melting the slag with pyrite to remove copper as a low- grade matte , ( 2 ) smelting the partly decopperized slag with fluxes and carbon to reduce the iron , and ( 3 ) refining the impure iron alloy from step 2 with a flush slag to remove sulfur and residual copper . Laboratory - scale tests demonstrated that washing with 8 wt pct of pyrite lowered the copper content of a typical reverberatory slag from 0.58 to 0.12 Subsequent smelting of a mixture composed of 70 pct decopperized slag , 25 pct lime , and 5 pct coke reduced 84 pct of the iron to metal containing 2.27 pct sulfur . This metal then was successfully desulfurized by treatment with a basic flush slag to produce a finished metal that contained , in percent , 93.5 Fe , 0.02 S , 0.26 Cu , and 4.9 C. Overall recovery of iron under the conditions of trial was about 80 pct . This could be increased if higher tolerances for copper could be accepted . Commercial processing would be accomplished in three furnaces with molten materials passing from one to another . Currently produced smelter slag could be treated fairly inexpensively , because the molten product would require only a little additional heat to produce an iron byproduct that undoubtedly would be attractive to local foundries .

The Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a systematic evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of combustion gases. These studies were designed to provide basic thermodynamic information of high accuracy, facilitating the theoretical study of flame and combustion phenomena.4 This report is the fifth of a series5/ presenting results of the study for particular fuel-oxidant systems. These calculations have as their objective the constant pressure flame temperature of acetylene-air for a range of pressures.

Problem: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's [NIOSH] National Occupational Research Agenda (DHHS Publication No. 96 115) reports that approximately 50% of miners will experience hearing loss by age 50, compared to only 9% of the general population. The present investigation examines three antecedents believed to be associated with miner's use of hearing protection. Method: A posttest delayed posttest control group field research design was employed to assess antecedents toward wearing hearing protection. Results: Following the initial posttest, miners' attitudes and subjective norms were antecedents to intentions to wear hearing protection devices. Also, intentions toward wearing hearing protection predicted hearing protection behaviors. Approximately six weeks later, miners' attitudes and perceived behavioral control were each significant predictors of intentions to wear hearing protection and again, intentions were positively associated with hearing protection behaviors. Impact on Industry: Our results indicate that appeals to normative influences may be the most effective antecedent to employ when persuading coal miners to wear hearing protection. However, messages designed to impact attitudes and perceived behavioral control were also effective.

Enthalpy and entropy increments above 298.15° K were determined for cop-per sulfate between 298° and 1,000° K and for copper oxysulfate between 2980 and 1,146° K by the method of copper-block drop calorimetry. Enthalpies, entropies, and heat capacities are tabulated for both compounds. In addition, free-energy functions are tabulated for the sulfate. Equations representing the enthalpies are given for each compound.

In Kiowa County, Okla., extensive deposits of clay are closely associated with pre-Cambrian anorthosites and gabbros. Investigation by the Bureau of Mines, including 1,723 feet of auger drilling, has shown the presence of very large quantities of clay containing between 20 and 25 percent alumina. All of the material contains large amounts of impurities, and even the best clays, selected for their relatively low content of iron, titanium, and magnesium, are unsuitable for the production of alumina by the sulfuric-acid process The soda-lime process gave somewhat better results, the product being nearer specification for commercial alumina. The clays are not amenable to beneficiation by simple sedimentation processes, and the alumina content could not easily be increased to produce material suitable for any alumina process.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report summarizes a field demonstration of pneumatic backfilling technologies conducted at the abandoned Hillside Coal and Iron Slope in Vandling, P A. Researchers demonstrated two pneumatic backfilling technologies recently developed under the USBM's Abandoned Mine Reclamation Research Program, the Pneumatic Pipefeeder and the High-Efficiency Ejector. Both systems had previously been evaluated at the USBM's subsidence abatement investigation laboratory near Fairchance, P A. The objective of the demonstration was to fill 100% of the abandoned tunnel with backfill stone to prevent further subsidence. The Pneumatic Pipefeeder was used for 21 days, at a rate of 63 to 124 t/ d (69 to 136 st/d), to fill 88% of the tunnel. The High-Efficiency Ejector was used for 2 days, at a rate of 125 to 132 t/d (138 to 146 st/d) to fill the remaining 12% of the tunnel. The backfill placed by both systems was tightly compacted. The major problem encountered was wear on the polyethylene pipeline from the abrasion of the high-velocity backfill. The use of heavier steel pipe minimized the problem. A cost analysis for the entire project is given.

Background Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas that can cause illness and death by asphyxiation. Although the toxicity of CO is understood, CO exposure can occur from unrecognized sources. On April 2, 2000, a couple and their newborn infant were poisoned by CO migrating through the ground from blasting at a nearby coal strip mine into their home near Kittanning, Armstrong County, PA. They were treated at the hospital and diagnosed with CO poisoning. The infant had a carboxyhemoglobin level of 31%, the father 28%, and the mother 17%. Carboxyhemoglobin is the compound formed in the blood when CO is breathed. Persons not exposed to CO have carboxyhemoglobin levels of 0.3%-0.7%, and cigarette smokers have levels of up to 9%. Following release from the hospital, the family installed a CO detector in the basement of their home with the help of the local fire department. This Technology News briefly describes this incident to help increase awareness of the problem. It is discussed in more detail by Eltschlager et al. [2001]. Figure 1 shows the coal strip mine believed to have generated the CO. The initial suspect for the source of the CO was the furnace in the house. Only later did it become apparent that blasting at the nearby strip mine might be the culprit. A State investigation concluded that CO had migrated approximately 500ft from the blast, through the ground, and into the home. Figure 2 shows the locations and order of blasts at the mine. Initially, the mine did not plan to blast. Overburden generally consisted of weathered shale that could be dug without blasting. However, the mine decided to blast when hard sandstone that could not be dug out was encountered within 3 ft of the coal top. The blasting was intended to break up the sandstone. Blasting was done using bulk ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) in 6.25-in holes 25-30 ft deep on a 16-ft by 16-ft pattern, with charge weights ranging from 17 to 170 lb. The closest blast to the home was 430 ft on April 17, 2000. The distance from the home to the blast area on the day when CO was first reported (March 31, 2000) was 500 ft. Twenty blasts were detonated at the mine between March 7, 2000, and April 20,2000. The blaster was careful to prevent fly rock since another home was only 150 ft away and a garage was 50 ft away. The quantity of explosive used in the blasts was sufficient to break the sandstone, but was less than would normally be used to blast overburden. The holes were typically one-third explosive and two-thirds stemming, with powder factors averaging 0.43 lb/yd3. Additionally, the muck was not immediately excavated after each blast. The heavy confinement on the explosive acted to prevent the typical release of blasting fumes into the atmosphere. Instances of CO migrating from blasts into homes have occurred before, but generally the distances involved were under 150 ft. It is believed that the blast design contributed to the confinement of CO in the ground, and discontinuities in the ground strata facilitated migration toward the residence. Upon inspection of the blast pitwall, a regular system of joints was observed. These joints are oriented roughly from the blast pit toward the house (figures 3-4).Blast-generated CO appears to have been driven into the joint system, displacing the air. When the joint system was saturated, the next succeeding blast pushed the CO into an uncased well next to the house (a high level of CO has been measured in the well shortly after a blast). From there, the CO entered the French drain system and then the basement of the house. The joints are vertical cracks through rock layers that occur on a regular spacing (figure 3). They are most common near valley slopes and are caused when valley walls converge as the stream cuts down through the rock layers. Often called hill seams, they roughly parallel the valley walls, but can curve and split, creating a pathway for gas movement (figure 5). These fractures are often encountered when underground mining proceeds close to outcrop. The system of fractures at the Kittanning blast pit was well developed and provided a path for transmission of CO both through the sandstone and up and through the overlying shales. Blasting engineers should be able to distinguish naturally occurring fractures from blast fractures and note the frequency, development, and orientation of the hill seams and their proximity to occupied houses. The Bureau of Mines used a diphenyl ether calorimeter to determine the heat contents of natural and synthetic blast-furnace slags. For solid slags, enthalpy (HT-H298) at 1,448° to 1,680° K ranged from 282.1 to 348.5 cal/g (±3 percent); liquid slag values were 400.1 to 514 cal/g (±3 percent) in the temperature range between 1,626° and 1,890° K. Experimental results for liquid slags were 14.3 to 16.2 percent higher than the enthalpies calculated from thermodynamic tables; values for solid slags ranged from 5.3 percent lower to 3.9 percent higher than calculated values. Experimental results for liquid synthetic slags ranged from 14.9 to 24.3 percent higher than the calculated enthalpies; values for solid synthetic slags were from 1.0 to 3.4 percent higher.

Tests with a high-pressure water jet were conducted in the steeply pitching Roslyn No. 5 bituminous coalbed in the Roslyn No. 9 mine, Roslyn, Wash., to determine the feasibility of extracting coal from pillars and from a solid coal face in development without drilling and blasting. During pillar mining, using a hand-held monitor, the best results were obtained with a 0.150-inch- diameter nozzle, a water pressure of 3,500 psi, and a flow rate of 38.5 gpm.3 The rate of mining and productivity were 0.74 ton per minute and 16.6 tons per man-shift, respectively. During development mining, using a monitor mounted on a roof jack, the best results were obtained with a 0.148-inch-diameter nozzle, a water pressure of 4,500 psi, and a flow rate of 40.0 gpm. In one section of the mine where the coal was relatively hard, the rate .of mining and productivity were 0.10 ton per minute and 5.7 tons per man-shift, respectively in another section of the mine where the coal was relatively soft, the rate of mining and productivity were 0.51 ton per minute and 8.3 tons per man-shift, respectively. The tests showed that hydraulic mining methods were more productive than conventional mining methods in pillar mining. In development the productivity of hydraulic mining depended primarily upon the coal hardness. Compared with conventional methods, hydraulic mining methods were less productive where the coal was relatively hard and equally as productive where the coal was relatively soft.

As part of its mission, the U.S. Bureau of Mines continues to develop technologies that will enable cost-effective compliance with environmental requirements. To this end, investigations to improve the kinetics of chalcopyrite dissolution by simultaneous grinding-leaching in ferric sulfate solution were conducted using the Bureau-designed turbo mill. The development of such a hydrometallurgical process would provide a nonpolluting alternative to conventional smelter technology. The effects of mill rotational speed and volume percent solids on the leaching time and energy required for copper extraction from chalcopyrite were evaluated. The results of this laboratory study have shown that the simultaneous grinding-leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate using the turbomill is technically feasible with essentially 100 pet extraction of copper being possible at 90° C. An optimal energy consumption of 1,153 kW?h/st of copper leached was found in batch testing with the mill operating at 400 rpm with a slurry containing 35 vol pet chalcopyrite. This energy consumption, while higher than other proposed leaching processes (about 600 kW?h/st), is of the same order of magnitude. Further refinement of the energy requirements would require additional testing using a continuous circuit. Leaching times of less than 1 h, for 80 pct copper extraction, are achievable using the turbomill grind-leach process.

NEW theoretical data are presented for the intensity of X-rays diffracted from randomly oriented aromatic and alicyclic molecules and diamondlike structures such as are found in coals, cokes, and carbonaceous materials. Data have been computed using the Debye interference function. Computations for the smaller molecules have been made with the Univac 1204 computer: those for large structures, with either the IBM 704 or Bendix G-20 computer. A brief theoretical introduction of the Dobye interference function is given, and an outline is made of the treatment of experimental data so that the experimental interference function can be obtained.

Now you know why there is concern about mine illumination. You have some idea about how the human eye works and about the problems of glare, peripheral vision, and accommodation. And you know that lighting in a mine presents special problems because of the dark surroundings and low reflectance. This chapter describes what can be done to improve conditions. This chapter begins with a short discussion about Federal Standards on mine lighting -- what they are and what is being done to carry them out. The chapter then describes different types of lamps that can be used for mine lighting, and discusses their advantages and disadvantages. Finally, the chapter lists some things that you can do personally to improve lighting, or can point out to others so that improvements can be made. The Federal Government is doing its part to improve mine lighting by establishing regulations. Lamp manufacturers are constantly studying new lamps to provide better equipment. And your company will do its part to comply with regulations. Better lights may not be here yet, but they will be soon. But in the end, you are the one who will be using the lights, and you are in the best position to see the improvements. You are also in the best position to see and tell others where further improve¬ments can be made.

Automation of coal mining activities at the face offers improvements in worker safety, health, and productivity. Introduction of integrated computer-sensor systems to current mining machines will enable these machines to perform some of the most hazardous tasks through supervised teleoperation. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is pursuing the development of the enabling technology necessary to achieve this goal. The research program consists of both basic and applied research, each focused on the fundamental issues of computer and sensor technologies. Short-term research is directed to providing computer-assisted, remote supervisory operation of present underground equipment; the long-term goal is the development of progressively more intelligent mining systems. The research program includes a review of robotic machine and autonomous vehicle technologies and of current mining technology, which provides a base for developing innovative mining methods; research in navigation and guidance technology, emphasizing control of a continuous mining machine; research on coal-rock interface sensing technology for horizon control, and rib thickness control in highwall mining; the development of computer systems and hierarchical architectures for real-time control; and development of expert systems for machine system fault diagnostics and predictive maintenance. This report presents a brief background and the current status for each of these research areas.

In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unpre- cedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 400,00 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country's oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the be- ginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million bar- rels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but pro- duced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation's petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. ce World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum prod- ucts has become the order of the day every day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has been increased enough to meet domestic require- ments by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the over-all daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 50 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields - having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly or perhaps more rapidly than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each, were discovered and proved - an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year's supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the num- ber of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. This report is a compilation of all information obtained in accordance with the requirements of contracts SO122076 and H0232056. A series of eight coal mines were visited to determine their communications usage and requirements. Presently available equipment was surveyed and evaluated to determine its applicability to the needs of the mines. Pipelines for transporting crude oil and refined products in the United States totaled 189,982 miles on January 1, 1959. This mileage was less than a 1-percent increase from the 1956 total of 188,540 miles. During the three-year period (January 1956 - January 199), 14,886 miles of new pipe and 10,649 miles of secondhand pipe was laid. Pipe taken up in the same period was 24,093 miles. The facts regarding pipeline mileage were obtained by the Bureau of Mines from pipeline companies and information provided by the Interstate Commerce Commission. Crude-oil gathering lines, as of January 1959, were 40 percent of the United States pipeline mileage and totaled 75,182 miles, an increase of 1,656 miles during the three-year period. Crude-oil trunklines totaled 70,317 miles or 37 percent of the United States pipeline mileage, a decline of 8,277 miles from the 1956 total. Some of this loss is attributed to the converting of crude lines to refined products. Refined product lines in January 1959, totaled 44,483 or 23 percent of the United States mileage, an increase of 8,063 miles during the three-year period.

Research was conducted to develop methods on a laboratory scale for recovering manganese from manganiferous slimes and limestones . The procedure is a low- temperature modification of the carbamate process , in which manganese is dissolved and the valence reduced by treating slimes and limestones with controlled amounts of sulfurous acid . Manganese ( II) hydroxide is precipitated and leached with ammonium carbamate solution , and manganese carbonate is separated by warming the leach solution . A major portion of the reagents is regenerated and recirculated . About 75 percent of the total manganese in manganiferous slimes , and from 50 to 75 percent of the total manganese in manganiferous limestones , are recovered as manganese carbonate containing 45 percent manganese .

Only a limited number of mass and infrared reference spectra of high purity unsaturated hydrocarbons and oxygenates are presently available in the literature. To aid Bureau of Mines research programs requiring such references, 64 mass spectra and 70 infrared spectra were obtained and are reported. The individual compounds, acquired from commercial sources, were purified by preparatory gas chromatography. Purity determinations were made using a combination of analytical gas chromatography, microhydrogenation, and catalytic deoxygenation. These spectra will aid spectroscopists in the identification of compounds of the types reported.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the safe operating conditions for using recycled (used) lubricating oil from mining equipment as a partial replacement for diesel fuel to make ANFO-type blasting agents. The use of recycled oil (RO) saves energy, reduces oil imports, and reduces mining costs. Low ambient temperatures may cause these recycled oils to become too viscous for proper absorption by ammonium nitrate (AN) prills and result in poor blast performance, safety hazards, and environmental problems. To help quantify and resolve these issues, viscosity, mixing, and performance tests were conducted at various temperatures. Diesel fuels No. 1 and No. 2 were studied separately and in blends with 25,50, and 75% RO. Good quality ANFO mixes (94-6) were produced with dry absorbent prills and blended fuel (No. 1 diesel plus RO) at temperatures as low as -40°F (-40°C) with 75% No. 1/25% RO, and at -20°F (-29°C) with 50/50. Diesel fuel No. 2 also made good mixes as low as -30" F (-34°C) with 75% No. 2/25% RO, and at 0°F (-18°C) with 50/50.
