The Bureau of Mines determined the factors involved in the corrosion of starting sheets used in the production of electrolytic zinc with the ultimate purpose of adapting zinc starting sheets to commercial practice . Under present practice , zinc is electrodeposited on aluminum cathodes and subsequently stripped for melting . The use of zinc instead of aluminum would eliminate the need to strip the deposit , thereby reducing the cost of handling and melting it , but zinc has not been suitable because it was too vulnerable to the corrosive attack of the electrolyte . Serious attack was found to be limited to the areas of the cathodes situated immediately above the surface of the electrolyte and to re - entrant corners . It was possible to avoid solution - level corrosion by immersing the starting sheets completely , exposing only a relatively heavy suspension member to solution - level attack . Zinc starting sheets could be made as reliable as aluminum and could be continued in residence for periods up to 39 days . Periods as long as a week were feasible under conditions similar to those found in commercial practice . A test of zirconium as a starting - sheet material showed that it promoted corrosion of the deposit to a lesser extent than aluminum and that the deposit adhered less tenaciously . These two properties lend themselves to the development of ways to strip deposits mechanically from zirconium starting sheets . Titanium was unsuitable for use as a starting - sheet material .

Some mines after passing through the prospecting stage and becoming sizable enterprises still adhere to the development program of the prospect, extending their workings without definite plans. In mining operations where definite structural conditions do not exist, a prearranged layout of mine development is not feasible; but where exploration and preliminary development have indicated the extent and probable limits within which the ore is expected, careful planning of development will result in a lowering of mining costs and a consequent increase is profits. A lack of definite plane for laying out mine workings is one of the contributory factors to unnecessarily high costs. Although this paper deals primarily with the influence of level spacing on mining costs, still other phases of mine development, such as the proper spacing of ore chutes and raises, can be analyzed on a cost basis in a similar manner, as shown herein. LEVEL SPACING The problem of establishing a new level or levels in order to exploit steeply dioping ore deposits and prospect the ground at depth recurs at intervals during the active life of mines. Driving levels is largely "dead work" and therefore costly. By the judicious selection of the proper level interval after balancing the opposing factors involved in the problem, a considerable saving in mining costs can be effected. Although much has been written in regard to the various methods employed in ore extraction, mining literature is still incomplete in regard to the factors-influencing level spacing at various mines. Level spacing involves procedures not lending themselves readily to description, and, moreover, it is a phase of mining operations that is apt to escape criticism, because only those in close contact with the operations are equipped with the necessary familiarity with the conditions to pass judgment.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the Ketchem Dome tin prospect in east-central Alaska to evaluate the tin resource. The studies included field investigations, mineralogical characterization, and concentration of the tin-bearing minerals. The tin mineralization consists of cassiterite (Sn02), which occurs as grains disseminated in a greisen (quartz-mica) matrixo A bulk sample from the largest and best-developed greisen vein exposed at Ketchem Dome contained 0.51 pct Sn. Concentration of the cassiterite by gravity table methods resulted in a product that contained 56 pct of the tin at a grade of 41.4 pct Sn. The mineralization exposed at Ketchem Dome is typical of greisen found in the area and elsewhere in interior Alaska.

In 1985, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Mines studied a 50,57U-acre portion of the 90,345-acre Twin Peaks Wilderness Study Area (CA-020-619A) in order to evaluate its identified resources. The area studied is located about 45 miles northeast of Susanville, CA, in Lassen County, CA, and Washoe County, NV. The area is underlain by Tertiary volcanic, volcaniclastic, and intrusive rocks. Quaternary stream, lake, and landslide deposits overlie the older rock. There are no mines or mining claims in the study area. One mineral resource, pozzolan, was identified. Mining claims, inactive in 1985, have been staked adjacent to or near the northwest corner of, and also southeast of, the study area. Examination and sampling of 17 mineralized sites, delineated mostly by prior geochemical surveys, showed at least 30 million tons of subeconomic pozzolan resources and small or low-grade occurrences of gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, nickel, molybdenum, zeolites and clay.

The objective of this contract was to provide thrust and torque control and visual output torque readout systems to an existing mine roof bolting machine and to test the consistency of torques obtained under actual field conditions. A Lee Norse TD1 roof bolter was modified by adding a simple torque sensing device to the drill rotation mechanism and a pneumatic logic control circuit that measures torque and controls the hydraulic circuit to the rotation motor. The modification controls and indicates the final installation torque of mine roof bolts. A total of over 5,000 mechanical roof bolts were installed in an operating coal mine. The installed torque of these bolts were within an error band (standard deviation) of 8%.

This report describes the washability characteristics of 18 coal samples taken from 11 drill hole cores from the San Juan Basin area of New Mexico and Colorado. The ash content of these coals could generally be substantially reduced by removing the heavy impurities. The coals were characteristically low in sulfur content; only one sample contained more than 1 percent sulfur after removing the sink-I.50 specific gravity material. The coals ranged in rank from subbituminous C to high volatile C; 11 of the samples were subbituminous A. Many of these core samples came from areas where very little fieldwork has been done; consequently, an outgrowth of this work has been an increase in known coal reserves of the San Juan Basin area.

"The generation of free radicals from reactions of nickel (Il)-thiol complexes with molecular oxygen and model lipid hydroperoxides was investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR) utilizing 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) as a spin trap. Incubation of nickel (II) [Ni(II)) with cysteine in an aerobic environment generated hydroxyl (·OH) radical, which then reacted with cysteine to generate a carbon-centered alkyl ( · R) radical. Radical generation was inhibited under a nitrogen atmosphere. Model lipid hydroperoxides, cumene hydroperoxide, and I-butyl hydroperoxide enhanced the yield of these radicals and also generated an alkoxyl (·OR) radical. Radical yield decreased by approximately half under a nitrogen atmosphere. Although histidine did not cause radical formation in the reaction between Ni(II) and cumene hydroperoxide under aerobic conditions, the addition of histidine to a mixture containing Ni(ll), cysteine, and cumene hydroperoxide under the same experimental conditions increased the yield of · R radical but lowered the yield of ·OR and ·OH radical adducts. It thus appears that histidine caused the ·OH attack to be more site-specific. Similar results were obtained utilizing 1-butyl hydroperoxide. Penicillamine or N-acetylcysteine yielded similar results except that under aerobic conditions, reaction between Ni(ll) and N-acetylcysteine without hydroperoxide did not generate a significant concentration of free radicals. Under the same experimental conditions, cystine did not generate any detectable free radicals, suggesting an important role of the -SH group in Ni(II)-mediated free radical generation. The results indicate that free radical generation from the reaction of Ni(Il)-thiol complexes and molecular oxygen, and/or lipid hydroperoxides, may play an important role in the mechanism(s) of Ni(II) toxicity and carcinogenesis. INTRODUCTIONWhile nickel is a well-recognized carcinogen [l, 2]. the underlying biochemical mechanisms remain unclear (3, 4). Recent studies suggest that these mechanisms may involve oxidative DNA damage through free radicals, especially the hydroxyl (•OH) radical [5-13]. The mechanisms of nickel carcinogenicity and toxicity may also involve lipid peroxidation [14-21]. Unlike ferrous ion [Fe(II)], the Ni(II) cation itself does not directly react with 02, H2O2, or lipid hydroperoxides to generate free radicals [12, 21]. However, it has been reported that Ni(II) complexes with certain synthetic oligopeptides, e.g., tetraglycine or glycylglycylhistidine, make Ni(II) reactive with 02. This reaction results in transitory formation of Ni(III) and degradation of the organic ligand via free radical reactions [22]. Such Ni(II)-peptide complexes are also capable of reacting with H2O2 to produce oxygen free radicals [11, 12]. Although the cellular environ¬ment may not contain these particular peptide ligands that are known to render Ni(II) redox active in vitro, it does contain a variety of oligopeptides that are capable of forming Ni(II) complexes at physiological pH, and thus may facilitate Ni(II) redox activity in vivo. These oligopeptides include glutathione (y-L glutamylycysteinylglycine), carnosine (homocarnosine (y aminobutyryl-L-histidine), and anserine ( B-alany1-3-methyl-L-histidine)."

The Bureau of Mines devised techniques involving the use of beta-and gamma-ray-emitting radioisotopes and successfully adapted these techniques to the density of mineralized flotation froths) the rate of flow of finely ground ore pulps) and the residence time of pulps in processing circuits. Specifically, the water and mineral loads of flotation froths were continuously measured by determining the proportion of a constant-strength beam of beta rays that was absorbed by the froth column. Continuous measurement of the rate of flow of an ore pulp was accomplished by measuring the changing width of a free-falling stream of the pulp with a collimated beam of beta rays. The residence time of solids in conditioning and resin-in-pulp circuits was accurately measured by following the progress through these circuits of a portion of the pulp that had been tagged with the gamma-emitting Ag110 radioisotope.

The objective of the investigation was to determine spectrochemically 19 elements in the general range of 0.5 to 1,000 ppm in high - purity hafnium and its compounds . Samples were converted thermally to hafnium dioxide , mixed with buffer - carrier - internal standards , and excited by a dc arc . Spectra were recorded on photographic plates . Transmittance values were recorded densitometrically and converted to relative - intensity ratios . Four groups of standards were used to establish analytical curves from which the concentrations of impurities were obtained . Average precision of the method was 14.2 percent relative standard deviation , and relative error was 4.2 percent .

Consumption of abrasive materials in the United States decreased 23% in value from that of 1981 to $262 million, of which 53% was manufactured abrasive, 39% was industrial diamond (natural and synthetic), and 8% was natural abrasive. Production of natural abrasives, excluding industrial diamond, appeared to be stable when compared with that of 1981. Production of tripoli, a porous siliceous rock, increased slightly after decreasing steadily over the three previous years. This publication contains analyses and related source data for 256 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 17 States. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1977 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. Nineteen previous publications have presented the results of 11,317 gas analyses prior to 1977. The first three, Bulletins 486,4 576,5 and 617,6 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960. The other 16

This bulletin is a revision of Bulletin 63 and is published by the Bureau of Mines in order that purchasers of coal for Government, State, municipal, or private use may be informed regarding advances or refinements in sampling coal deliveries and preparing specifications for the purchase of coal. The purchase of coal by the Government under specifications depending on the heating value of the coal, its content of ash and of moisture, and other considerations, rather than upon the reputation or trade name of the coal, was based on the fuel investigations begun by the Technologic Branch of the United States Geological Survey in 1904. The plan was first adopted by the Treasury Department in 1906. Since then the plan, variously modified in form, but the same in principle, has been gradually adopted by other departments until, at present, of the coal used by the Government, the total value of which approximates $8,000,000 annually, more than half is purchased under specifications. The Government publications dealing with the adoption by the Government of the specification plan, the number of contracts awarded on that basis, and the quality of the coal delivered under such contracts in the several fiscal years covered by the reports are given in publioations a listed at the end of this bulletin. Under the authority of acts of Congress making appropriations for analyzing and testing fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Government, a laboratory is maintained at the headquarters of the Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C., where samples representing deliveries of coal purchased under specifications for Government use are analyzed and tested. At this laboratory more than 1,200 samples have been analyzed and tested in one month. With the complete equipment and the efficient force employed, the analytical work has been so perfected that the analyses and heating-value tests of the samples received are as accurate as may be reasonably expected in laboratory work of this nature. One of the serious drawbacks to the general adoption of the specification method for the purchase of coal is the difficulty of obtaining at reasonable cost samples of coal that can be considered fairly representative of the commercial product delivered in wagons, railroad cars, or ships. Therefore the method of taking and preparing samples for shipment to the laboratory has been given fully as much care as the making of the analyses and tests, and a general plan of collecting samples fairly representative of the delivered coal has been evolved through various modifications and improvements based on experience and increased knowledge of the physical and chemical characteristics of the various coals that are purchased by the Government. The method that is in general use by the Government is described in the following pages. In connection with studies of the coal deposits of the country, of the best methods of preventing waste in mining, and of increasing efficiency in the utilization of coal belonging to or for the use of the Government, geologists and engineers of the United States Geological Survey and of the Bureau of Mines have visited more than 2,500 coal mines scattered through all of the coal-producing States and Territories. From each mine 2 to 8 or more samples were taken, the number depending upon the size of the mine and its output. The analyses and descriptions of the samples collected up to the end of the fiscal year 1913 are published in Bureau of Mines bulletins 22 a and 85,b and those of samples collected in the fiscal years 1914 and 1915 are presented in a bulletin that will soon be published by the bureau. A study of the analyses of these samples and of the samples taken from cars shipped from a number of the same mines shows that the mine samples are as a rule of higher grade than the average commercial shipments, particularly with respect to containing a lower percentage of ash and having a correspondingly higher heating value. This difference is due to the fact that the Government inspector, proceeding on the basis of what can be done by a good miner, usually removes more of the partings of bone, slate, and other extraneous matter from his mine samples than the average miner does in ordinary practice, the aim of the miner being to get the maximum number of tons past the tipple inspection, as his earnings are based on his output. The average miner, therefore, does not always take as much care as he might in rejecting the impurities. "Domestic Situation:The greatly increased use of lithopone as a base for paints, particularly for interior use, has timulated the demand for barytes to such a degree that the supply cannot keep pace with the demand. Lithopone is an artificially prepared compound composed of about 70 per cent barium sulphate and 30 per cent zinc sulphide, precipitated together. Its most important use is in paint, but it is also used in oilcloth, linoleum, rubber goods, shade cloth, etc.Prior to the war large quantities of barytes were imported from Germany, but during the war imports were negligible, domestic production increased very greatly and is still increasing. Ground barytes as used in paints/ formerly regarded as an adulterant, but now it is generally recognized as a valuable paint constituent. Mile domestic sources have expanded rapidly they have not overtaken the demand and there is need for still greater expansion. Stocks are low, little is being sold on the open market, and prices are high. Since barytes is a gangue mineral associated with metallic ores now being mined in the west, it is suggested that more attention be given to its recovery as a by-product.The following tables compiled from reports of the U.S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, indicate the growth of domestic consumption."

The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1980 was $328.6 million, a decrease of $7.8 million from 1979. Cement, crushed stone, lime, clays, and sand and gravel continued as the major commodities produced. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble; was second in bauxite; third in native asphalt, ferroalloys, kaolin, and oyster shell; fourth in dimension marble, masonry cement, and bentonite; and fifth in fire clay and lime. Alabama ranked in the top 20 States in total value of non-metallic minerals produced. Adverse economic conditions in the construction and metals industries impacted on the minerals industry in Alabama. Mineral producers supplying raw or finished materials to these industries experienced periodic reductions in sales during the year. Unit price increases did not keep up with inflation.

Abstract-This study predicts the level of smoke that miners might meet while trying to escape a coal mine fire and describes how smoke would impede their safe escape. For this study, the authors assumed that miners exit through an escapeway adjacent to the burning entry, that some air would leak from the burning entry to the escapeway. The following conclusions were made: • A very low amount of air leakage to the escapeway can produce a critical level of visual obscurity from smoke. This shows that intake airways may be as susceptible to smoke visibility problems as return airways. • This critical level of smoke obscurity is reached much before a critical level of carbon monoxide is reached. • Small fires can cause a severe sensory irritation that further limits vision. Thus, reliable eye protection is very important. These results show that methods to guide miners through dense smoke will contribute greatly to saving lives during mine fires.

This volume summarizes mining and petroleum legislation in 30 jurisdictions of the Western Hemisphere. Within these jurisdictions, primary attention is given to requirements that must be met in each country for acquisition of rights to permit development of mineral resources. Coverage includes: First, identification of the controlling laws or statutes governing minerals acquisition and reference to the administrative authority; second, analysis of the laws governing mines and quarries and their products; and third, analysis of laws applicable to natural gas, petroleum, and related materials. Where pertinent, sections dealing with historical background or administration have been added. In countries where minerals are subject to control of States or Provinces, those areas are considered separately from the central government.

Statistical methods applied at the Bureau of Mines Denver Mining Research Center to data from metallic ore bodies were used to evaluate lignite reserves from core data and to predict the extent of lignite horizons in some Texas lignite beds. Six lignite seam units were studied using data from 361 drill holes. The data indicate a total of 214.2 million tons of lignite in the area examined, and probable reserves of 113 million tons in an area 2,000 feet beyond the limits established by the drill holes. It was demonstrated that lignite reserves present in lenticular beds could be reliably determined by statistical techniques, and that core drilling could be optimized to maximum information with minimum drill holes. The technique described is applicable to other coal beds.
