The Bureau of Mines conducted surface joint and stress measurements, airborne remote sensing imagery studies, compass-oriented borehole televiewer surveys, numerical simulation of fractured wells, and well productivity studies in a four-quadrangle study area of Ohio, to determine the effects of earth fracture systems on the deliverability of gas storage fields. The results of these studies indicate that much useful information about a gas storage reservoir can be obtained and put to practical use by studying--(1) oriented cores for fractures and directional permeability, (2) orientation of induced hydraulic fractures for alignment of well patterns, and (3) aerial photos and multispectral scanner imagery for general surface geology comparison and to determine if some, development patterns can be generated by such results. The absence of known tectonic elements associated with flat-lying sediments, such as faults or fracture zones that can be seen on the surface, indicates that the use of remote sensors such as radar or aerial photography is not likely to be useful in picking well locations for drilling. Studies similar to those discussed here should be conducted in gently folded and strongly folded sedimentary formation areas to determine if the increased knowledge of earth fracture systems under these conditions might be beneficial in gasfield and gas storage reservoir development.

The object of this study was to determine the economic feasibility of hydraulically transporting Sandow (Tex.) lignite 100 miles and dewatering and thermally drying the transported lignite to a surface-dry condition. The most important factors involved in the feasibility of hydraulic transport, are the degradation incurred during transit, the length of the line, and the cost of alternative methods of shipment. In pipeline tests in which roughly 75 miles of hydraulic transport was simulated the percentage of minus-325-mesh solids increased from about 1 to 41 percent for both lignite and bituminous coal; in the micron sizes the coal fared considerably better than the lignite. Such degradation, even though it enhances flow through the pipe-line, severely aggravates the dewatering problem on lignite. Cost studies indicated that continuous vacuum filters offer the most economical means of dewatering minus-1/8-inch material. Surface moisture, if high, must be removed by relatively expensive thermal drying.

"The Bureau of Mines conducted research on the flocculation of various minerals with insoluble cross-linked starch xanthate (ISX) to determine its potential as a beneficiation technique for low-grade, highly disseminated ores and for selective desliming. Covellite, chalcocite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, bornite, sphalerite, galena, and molybdenite fines flocculate with ISX. Floc formation, floc size, and settling rate are dependent on pH, with the pH dependence differing for each mineral. Quartz is not flocculated by ISX. Experiments to obtain selective flocculation of sulfides from quartz were attempted. Good selectivity was only obtained for the bornite-quartz system. Post flocculation separations resulted in flocculated bornite in grades as high as 92 pct. Evidence is presented that the flocculation of many of the sulfide minerals with ISX may involve covalent bonding of the xanthate group to lattice metal site(s). INTRODUCTIONBecause of the increasing interest in selective flocculation as a beneficiation technique for low-grade, highly disseminated ores and for selective desliming, the Bureau of Mines has been investigating the flocculation behavior of several cross-linked starch derivatives containing chelating groups. This report dis cusses the flocculation of sulfide mineral fines by insoluble cross-linked starch xanthate (ISX).Polymeric materials such as ISX, which contain a chelating group of known re¬activity towards specific mineral surfaces, were first proposed by Slater, Clark, and Kitchener (1), 3 Kitchener (2), and Attia and Kitchener (3) as selective flocculants for mineral fines with particle aggregation possible through a bridging mechanism. Energy dispersion X-ray analysis was evaluated for possible application in the secondary metals industries for the rapid analysis and identification of copper-base alloys. Laboratory investigations of standard brass and bronze samples indicate that X-ray methods are capable of separating standard alloys into 10 general classes with analytical times of less than 3 seconds per sample for clean, flat samples. A radioactive source of americium 241 with a secondary fluorescer was used as an excitation source, and a lithium-drifted silicon semiconductor detector was utilized for energy discrimination of X-rays.

This report describes economic mining feasibility studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines to estimate mining costs in the Porcupine mining area of the Juneau Mining District, southeastern Alaska. Investigations were conducted on the economics of three mineral deposit types: 1) massive sulfide deposits containing zinc, copper, and silver, 2) vein gold, and 3)disseminated gold. Cost estimates were developed using the Bureau of mines Cost Estimating S,-stem. Discounted cash flow rates of return were calculated using the Bureau of Mines MINSIM (mining simulation) computer program. Three sets of metal prices were used in the study based on recent historical price information. Underground longhole stope mining of a massive sulfide deposit containing 25 pct zinc. 1 pct copper, and 63.6 g/mt silver was found to be economic at high metal prices at a quantity of 13,200,000 mt ore. Cut-and-fill mining of a 26,400,000 mt massive sulfide deposit was found to be economic at medium metal prices. Open pit mining of a similar deposit was found to he economic at medium metal prices and 26,400,000 mt ore, or at high metal prices and 6,600,000 mt ore. Underground mining of a vein gold deposit was found to be economic at a grade of 17.1 g/mt medium metal prices and 1,320,000 mt ore. Open pit mining of a disseminated gold deposit was found to be economic at a grade of 1.71 g/mt medium metal prices and a quantity of 39,600,000 mt ore.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated podiform chromite deposits in three ultramafic bodies in the Caribou Mountain and lower Kanuti River areas of central Alaska. The investigation, reported in two parts, was done as part of the Bureau's mission to help insure an adequate supply of minerals to meet the Nation's needs. Part I describes an extensive field investigation and mineralogical studies by personnel from the Bureau's Alaska Field Operations Center. This report, part II, describes the mineralogy of 11 samples that were high-graded from surface exposures at 10 sites and presents the results of laboratory batch beneficiation tests designed to concentrate the chromite. The 11 samples, peridotites and chromitites that consisted of variable amounts of chromite or chromium-bearing spinets, olivine, and serpentine, were beneficiated by grinding and sizing, gravity concentration, and electrodynamic separation. Three high-chromium chromite concentrates, two high-iron chromite concentrates, and one high-aluminum chromite concentrate were produced. Three other concentrates were marginal, and two were submarginal. Chromium recoveries ranged from 54 to 92 pct. These results indicate that the areas may be significant chromium resources. Potential platinum association with the chromite was also investigated. Analysis of these 11 samples indicates that the areas are not good platinum resources.

A facility to evaluate the fire endurance of mine stoppings was constructed by the Bureau of Mines in the multiple entry section of the Bruceton (PA) Experimental Mine. Stoppings up to 6 by 18 ft can be tested in a manner simulating mine conditions. The stopping is subjected to a 70-min liquid fuel tray fire with an energy output of 75,000 Btu/min. The stopping and adjacent areas are instrumented with thermocouples and heat flux gauges. Data acquisition is by an automatic data logger capable of continuously recording over 100 channels of information. Two 8-in-thick concrete block stoppings and a galvanized steel stopping were tested. A crack developed on the fire side surface of the block stoppings where the flames were most intense. However, the temperatures of the unexposed surfaces of the stoppings never exceeded 800 C and the surfaces were undamaged. The steel stopping retained its structural integrity during the test. The temperature of the unexposed steel surface reached 5000 C, but combustible materials located 1 ft from the surface did not ignite. A 3/4-in-thick coating of construction plaster was applied to the fire side of the previously tested uncoated steel stopping. The quantity of heat energy transmitted across this coated metal stopping was reduced approximately 50%. All stoppings prevented the passage of flame and smoke.

"DEFINITION OF VISCOSITYViscosity has been defined as the resistance experienced by one portion of a liquid moving over another portion, such as one molecular plane moving over an adjacent plane. A measure of viscosity is the force required to keep one plane in motion at Unit velocity, the other plane being considered stationary. Figure 1 illustrates the general idea that the surface friction between two adjacent areas will be greater the larger the molecules. Therefore it may be assumed that viscosity will be increased by molecular association or agglomeration, and likewise dissociation rill decrease viscosity. According to Maxwell (1)6 the unit of viscosity, the poise, is the tangential force per square centimeter of area of either of two horizontal planes 1 centimeter apart, one of which is fixed while the other moves with unit velocity, the space between being filled with viscous liquid of unit viscosity.The need for a satisfactory apparatus and experimental procedure for the determination of viscosity of high-melting materials at temperatures corresponding to those in pig-iron and steel making has been recognized during the past few decades. The condition of the slag during the smelting and refining periods in the iron- and steel-making processes exerts an important influence on the metal product obtained, this slag condition really meaning the state of viscosity or, vice versa, fluidity, which the slag attains under certain conditions."

This paper is the result of a comparative study of ultimate coal analyses made and published by the United States Geological Survey. This study, at first casually undertaken to devise an acceptable classification of coals based on chemical analyses, was continued in connection with a microscopic examination of a number of the coals. The initial comparisons, made from a relatively small number of analyses, not only confirmed a previous conviction that the elimina- tion of oxygen incident to the development of a coal is economically far more important than has been generally suspected, but also showed that oxygen is very nearly as harmful as ash in coal. The immediate purposes of the present study were: (a) To deter- mine more definitely, from a comparative examination of a large number of ultimate analyses, the relative importance of oxygen as an impurity in various coals; (b) to illustrate the transition between various grades of coal of similar origin-transition mainly due to progressive devolatilization, brought about more or less directly by dynamic influences; (c) to ascertain the relative proportions of oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon in coking coals, especially with refer- ence to a theory tentatively framed to explain the coking quality; and (d) to forecast the probabilities of successfully treating a large number of coals so as to render them amenable, in a softened condition, to satisfactory study under the microscope. Although the hypothesis as to coking quality finds but partial support in the chemical analyses, its consideration has led to a method of predicting from an analysis with a fair degree of certainty whether any given coal will coke by the ordinary process. The unbroken transition between coals originally similar but now classed in widely different groups, whether of the same age or of different ages, as a result of dynamochemical action, appears demonstrated by the analyses as well as by field observation. The study area, which comprises 11,500 acres, includes the 9,610-acre Whitewater Wilderness Study Area, in the California Desert Conservation Area, 15 miles northwest of Palm Springs, CA. The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluation of mineral resources is based on examination of prospects and mineralized areas during the spring of 1981. The Whitewater study area is mainly underlain by granodiorite to quartz diorite and their gneissic equivalents in an igneous-metamorphic complex. Late Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic rocks locally overlie the crystalline complex in the eastern part of the study area. The study area lies between branches of the San Andreas fault system.

Sec. 451-483). Background The Federal Coal-Mine Inspection program was established to carry out the provisions of Public Law 49, 77th Congress, H. R. 2082, approved May 7, 1941. This act has since been amended to be known as Title I -Advisory Powers Relating to Health and Safety Conditions in Mines, under Public Law 552, 82d Congress, approved July 16, 1952, which also includes Title II -Prevention of Major Disasters in Mines. Public Law 552 is known as the Federal Coal-Mine Safety Act.

Disposing of coal mine waste at the surface has been and continues to be a problem which has yet to be resolved within the coal mining industry. A possible solution to this problem is to return the refuse back into the operating underground mine generating the waste material. It is believed that the approach described will provide an inexpensive and pratical solution to the problem. The designed system is installed and operable at the Millers Cove Energy Company, Inc. property in Lee County, Virginia. This system limits surfact facilities to a minimum size. It incorporates state-of-the-art hydraulic transport and backfilling technology and equipment to systematically backfill areas within the active mine. It maximized the benefits of reducing treatment of coal wasts while it minimizes environmental impacts on groundwater. The system approaches the problem in a manner to maximize benefits and minimize risks. The cost of returning coal waste back underground at the Millers Cove site is estimated at $0.67 per ton of marketable coal (1982 dollars), which is slightly higher than their surface disposal cost of $0.61 per ton of marketable mat (1982 dollars). The underground disposal costs do not include cost savings that should be realized within the preparation plant and treatment facilities at the surface. Preliminary tests of the system were conducted at the surface; funding restrictions prevented an in-mine trial. Efforts should continue to demonstrate the feasibility of solving the problem of refuse disposal. The installed system and plant at Millers Cove should provide the opportunity to test an underground disposal operation. This report contains guidelines to pursue this opportunity.

A study of the high magnification of some inorganic fibers which are found in nature or produced in the laboratory, has been conducted with the electron microscope. This series of electron microqraphs shows the important morphological differences exhibited by potassium-lead silicate, lead-aluminum silicate, chrysotile, wollastonite, silicon nitride, potassium titanate, cobalt chrysotile, magnesio-fluor-richterite, fluor-richterite, refractory oxide fiber, silicon carbide, massive serpentine, and palygorskite. A ribbon or a thin lath 250-2500 A. wide is the structural form of potassium-lead silicate and lead-aluminum silicate. Chrysotile, cobalt chrysotile, and massive serpentine all have a tubular structure and a fairly uniform (150-300 A.) diameter. Wollastonite, potassium titanate, fluor-richterite, and magnesio-richterite crystals have a lath shape, and potassium titanate laths are laminated ribbons. Single fibers of silicon nitride and palygorskite are ribbons, and the silicon nitride sample contains many twins (branching fibers). Palyqorskite fibers are highly flexible and have cross-sectional measurements of 150-300 A. Silicon carbide fibers differ from other fibers because their structure consists of several different forms. The sample used in this study had, predominately, a margarite-type structure. The refractory oxide fiber lost, all its apparent fibrosity after being prepared for electron microscopic examination, and only irregular fragments are visible in the electron micrographs.

Native asphalt was produced by five companies in two States, Texas and Utah. Bituminous limestone, used primarily as a paving material for street and road repair, was produced by White Uvalde Mines and by Azrock Industries Inc., Uvalde County, TX. In June, Azrock Industries was purchased by the R L. White Co. Gilsonite, a solidified hydrocarbon found only in Utah and Colorado, was mined by American Gilsonite Co., a division of Chevron Resources Co. (a subsidiary of Standard Oil Co. of California); by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp.; and by Hydrocarbon Mining Co. (a subsidiary of Oberon Oil Inc., a Utah corporation) from properties in Uintah County, UT. Gilsonite is used for a variety of purposes including automobile bodysealer, light-weight aggregate for cement used in oil well drilling, asphaltic building board, protective coverings, anticorrosive paints, and roofing compounds.

1. This, the final report to the U. S. Bureau of Mines on the program with the subject title, presents the data obtained from June 29, 1973, to April 20, 1974. 2. Operating in the Illinois #6 coal seam, the effectiveness of foam opposed to water was compared in reducing respirable coal dust. A combination of 39 foam generators and 14 water sprays were used during the foam tests. Sixty one water sprays were operated during the water tests. Data from 24 shifts using foam and 21 shifts using water are presented. 3. Additional work on foam generator design should be undertaken to provide coverage to a wider area with foam. 4. The general attitude of those working on the foam program and with the miner at the face was positive. It is urged that the work be continued. 5. The minor respiratory irritations evidently caused by an aerosol effect of the surfactant should be investigated. 6. The statistical analysis of the tests will be made and reported by the U. S. Bureau of Mines.

A mineral resource survey of the 940-square-mile (2,434 km2) Hells Canyon study area, which includes Hells Canyon Wilderness, Snake and Rapid Wild and Scenic River's, and adjoining roadless lands in Oregon and Idaho, indicates the area is highly mineralized. Thirty-four lode deposits within the study area have resources totaling about 31 million tons (28 million t) containing copper, silver, zinc, gold, and lead; another 42 lodes, not sufficiently exposed to allow resource estimates, are believed to have mineral potential. The most important deposits are copper-, silver-, zinc-, gold-, and lead-bearing volcanogenic occurrences, followed by silver-and copper-bearing contact replacement (tactite) deposits; other lode occurrences are relatively unimportant. The most important placer deposits occur at Dry Diggins; placers along the Snake River are small and scattered. The study area has extensive deposits of limestone and sand and gravel; it has little potential for energy resources.

U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized areas to determine the mineral resources and potential of the Moses and Dennison Peak RARE II areas in Tulare County, California. These areas, along the west slope of the Sierra Nevada, are underlain by grarnitic rocks of the Sierra Nevada batholith and contain numerous metasedimentary roof pendants. Silver, copper, and zinc occur in contact-metasomatic deposits within the metasedimentary rocks. In the Moses area, the Powell Mine (fig. 1) contains an estimated 90,000 tons (82,000 t) of subeconomic silver, zinc, and copper resources. The King Solomon Prospect has 3,000 tons (2,700 t) of silicified phyllite containing zinc. On the Helen-Joyce Prospect, 44,000 tons (40,000 t) of gossan occur above a poorly exposed silver-zinc rich zone. Potential exists for additional mineral resources and occurrences at each of these properties.

The Bureau of Mines has carried out experimental and theoretical studies with prilled and pulverized ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) mixtures containing varying amounts of fuel oil in an attempt to quantify the effects of stoichiometric composition, nonideal detonation behavior, and expansion volume on the production of CO, NO, and N02 fumes. Experimental fume measurements were obtained in the Bureau's large closed gallery facility (7.2 X 104 liter expansion chamber) and in the standard Crawshaw-Jones apparatus (90--liter expansion shamber) using a prepackaged charge configuration containing about 450 g of explosive.4 The theoretical calculation of toxic fumes was achieved with an equilibrium detonation code called "TIGER,," Contrary to initial expectations, the NOx (= NO + N02) fumes from the large gallery test were found to be in essential agreement with the Crawshaw-Jones results. It was also concluded that (1) "TIGER" calculations offer a good approach to the prediction of toxic fumes; (2) there is a basic problem in extrapolating laboratory measurements of CO fumes to mine conditions--this being due to postdetonation oxidation of CO to CO2; and (3) the detonation velocity decay rate of an explosive is a useful experimental parameter for correlating toxic fumes production with nonideal detonation behavior.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 352 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 18 States and 5 foreign countries. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1974 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economics. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. A ventilated helical boost pump was developed that can handle varying flow rates and/or solids concentrations while operating at a single rotational speed and without computer assisted feedback controls. The boost pump developed and briefly tested during this program was designed to accomodate flows suitable for a 3-in. diameter pipeline. The boost pump's ventilated design provides the automatic pressure regulation needed to meet the system's requirements for supporting transient pipeline flow.
