The production of minerals for human use at locations other than the Earth is expected to ?advance ? human prosperity in ? ways that [do] not compromise the potential prosperity and quality of life of future generations? (Brundtland, 1987); in other words, sustainably. This paper examines the interaction of extra-terrestrial mineral production (ETMP) with the following sustainability imperatives: ? The sustainability of human activities on Earth; ? The sustainability of human activities elsewhere; ? Human survival in general, the ultimate sustainability goal. Some of the consequences of mineral production on Earth are widely considered to decrease the future prosperity and quality of human life. Examples include noxious by-products or wastes and unsettling economic up- and downswings. Moving mineral production activities to extra-terrestrial locations, where appropriate, will decrease many of its deleterious effects. Terrestrial mineral production presently is decreasing in some countries and increasing in others, moving from the cheaper and easier ores to more expensive, difficult materials. When the full costs of maintaining the terrestrial environment in a sustainable manner are included, total mineral pro-duction costs must increase. The cost of extracting mineral products from extra-terrestrial sources will be substantially higher, especially in the initial phases, but as the full costs of terrestrial production increase, at some point in the future (different points for different minerals), the curves will cross (Fig.1). This will occur at different points for different materials, a process whose prediction will be complicated by substitution of cheaper materials for some uses as prices of the original material rise. In summary, mineral products from extra-terrestrial sources will tend to increase the sustainability of human civilization, once steady state has been reached.

This paper describes, in detail, results obtained from a research study of a complex iron ore aiming to produce a pellet feed concentrate with at least 65% of Fe and less than 3.5% of SiO2 in the final concentrate. The work includes an ore desliming followed by column flotation at laboratory scale. The ore sample was from Carajás province - Brazil and represents a complex low grade compact itabirite ore, analyzing 35.9% Fe, 45.1% SiO2 and 0.57% of Al2O3. Yet, the feed was treated previously by magnetic separation and grounded to 97% < 20 µm; this sample was named MAG 2. The chemical and mineralogical characterization of the MAG 2 sample showed that Fe and SiO2 grades were 50.7% and 24.3% respectively and was composed mainly by hematite, goethite and quartz. The particle size distribution, using a laser diffraction technique, showed that 90% of the particles were < 18 µm; 50% less than 8 µm and 10% minor than 1 µm. When the cationic reverse flotation without desliming was tested the selectivity of the process was very low and did not meet the concentrate metallurgical goals of the pellet feed product. However, when desliming was applied prior to flotation, a concentrate product with chemical characteristics of the pellet feed was obtained. The best results after desliming and column flotation achieved global iron metallurgical recovery of 72% with Fe grade in the concentrate of 66.5% and 2.1% SiO2 using starch as depressant for the iron oxides minerals at 1200 g/t ? 1500 g/t and an amine as the quartz collector at 100 g/t concentration (pH constant, at 10.5). It is believed that the desliming stage was key in the separation of the iron bearing particles and has a high potential for the flotation process of this type of ores.

SABC circuits have gained widespread attention within China, and are being gradually applied to many mines. However, the domestic knowledge of comminution process is still relatively basic, and the design and production management of the application of SABC technology lack guidance of scientific theories. This research project focuses on the Phase I SABC milling circuits of Wu Shan Porphyry copper mine. Targeting the design and operation problems of existing process and circuit, and without increased investment and alterations in equipment, the new technologies will combine ordinary crushing and grinding theories as theoretical guidance, and borrow JK Simulation Software (JKSimMet) for analysis in order to optimize the comminution process, efficiently allocate production output and energy consumption, eventually resulting in increased production and energy efficiency. Using JKSimMet Simulation Software, and combining theoretical optimizing and practical production techniques, as well as the on-site situation, the eventual SABC comminution process and circuit optimization plan is: increasing the grinding Ball charge from 8% to 10% v/v in the SAG mill; Setting the Ball charge in the Ball mill to 27% v/v and the maximum operating power draw to 5 800kW; replacing the HP Series crusher with a TRIO TC84 crusher, which is without a power controller, and adding a pebble bin. The final optimization result is: Maximum system processing capacity increased between 20%-26.7%, specific energy consumption reduced by more 2.0 kWh/t, creating an economic benefit of over 300 million RMB, thus achieving the goal of increased production, reduced energy consumption, and improved profitability.

"In this study, a three level Box- Behnken factorial design combined with Response surface methodology (RSM) for modeling of process parameters of Multi Gravity Separator (MGS) for recovery Iron values from sub grade iron ore, Deposit No. 5, Bailadila complex has been developed. The three significant operational parameters of MGS, Drum rotational speed (RPM), Drum inclination (degrees) and quantity of wash water (LPM) were considered in the experimental work. Other parameters like feed percent solids, shake frequency and shake amplitude were maintained constant. The ‘as received’ sub grade iron ore sample is admixture of lump and fines and chemically assayed 40.80% Fe, 40.90% SiO2, 0.24% Al2O3 and 0.22% Loss on Ignition (LOI). The obtained results were evaluated with the Box-Behnken factorial design, RSM and also Quadratic programming(QP). Second order response functions were produced for Fe in terms of grade (%) and recovery (%) of the concentrate fraction. Taking advantage of QP, it was observed that maximum grade of 62.21% Fe achieved at an inclination of 4.3degrees, 2.7LPM of wash water and at a drum speed of 198 RPM. Similarly a maximum Fe recovery of 65.37% weight can be achieved at 4.3degrees inclination, 2.6LPM wash water and at a rotational speed of 212 RPM Predicted values of responses obtained using model equations were in good agreement with the experimental values. The influence of the process variables of the multi gravity separator concentrator on grade and recovery of concentrate fraction were presented and discussed."

It has been long known that many microorganisms are able to interact with mineral particles to obtain a concentrate; thus, one possible technique is flotation and its related process. Biological process have been attracting attention in mineral processing due to lower operating cost and their possible applications to process low-grade and fine ores. The adhesion of microorganism to surface of mineral particles can alter the hydrophobicity of mineral markedly. Such surface modifications modify its hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity will be used to flotation of cassiterite fines. The major difficult to float fine particles is attributed to the low probability of bubble-particle collision, one characteristic of electroflotation process is the ability to create very tiny bubbles, which is known, improve the collision efficiency and flotation performance of fine particles. In this study, the electroflotation of fine particles using Rhodococcus opacus strain as bioreagent was investigated. Electroflotation experiments were carried out using particles of cassiterite around 8µm of mean diameter the adsorption of R. Opacus onto cassiterite particles was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), electrokinetic and contact angle analyses. The measurement of bubble size by laser diffraction showed a mean bubble size of around 26 µm, current density and bacteria concentration appear to be the main parameters affecting the mean diameter of bubbles, electroflotation tests reported recovery around of 64.5 % at pH 5, concentration of 2,87 x10¹² cells/ml (50 mg/L) and current density of 51,4 mA/cm2.

Pyrite is present as a gangue mineral in most of complex sulphide ores and most of time it is removed as a tailing. However, beneficiation of pyrite from tailings could be important because of its economical value and for the environmental concern. This paper presents a research for the enrichment of pyrite from copper plant tailings, Siirt-Madenköy/Turkey, by flotation. Siirt-Madenköy copper mine is operated by Park Electric Production Mining and Industry since 2005. In order to obtain the pyrite from Siirt-Madenköy copper plant tailings, laboratory test work has to be done to determine the type of reagents, the flowsheet, and the size of plant. The objective of the company is to develop a pyrite flotation circuit for concentration of pyrite from tailing dam to obtain 500.000 tons/year pyrite concentrate. There are about 3 million tons tailings that containing pyrite in the tailings dam. Experiments were carried out with three different types of tailings from the plant and the pyrite concentrate with 46% Fe and 90% recovery has been obtained. Therefore, this study shows that high grade pyrite with high recovery can be recovered from the tailings.

"IT enabled platforms are the key to provide an integrated view of the business activity or an enterprise as a whole. Attempts to integrate all functions in an enterprise such as mine-to-market initiatives, wherever and to whatever extent implemented, have provided significant benefits to the industry. The transformative potential of IT enabled integration platforms is illustrated in this communication from our own work in this field. TCS PREMAP (Platform for the Realization of Materials and Products) is a knowledge-driven engineering design and development platform which leverages modeling and simulation and artificial intelligence into the engineering design process. We illustrate the customization of this generic platform for the design and optimization of mineral processing plants in an integrated manner. TCS PEACOCK (Process and Equipment Analytics for Optimization and Control) has been developed to enable automation of data analytics in the operating plants. We illustrate its utility and power in improving the plant performance with the help of case studies from our work on pelletization of iron ores and optimization of flotation plants. INTRODUCTION We are living in an exciting digital era. With the advent of cloud computing and social media on the one hand and rapid advances being made in several research areas of interest to us in the minerals and metals industry such as artificial intelligence (AI) & machine learning, robotics, unmanned vehicles including drones, big data analytics, 3D printing, sensor technologies, renewable energies and internet of things (IoT), many disruptive transformations in our industry are on the horizon. Recent advances in information technology (IT) and knowledge engineering, in combination with appropriate domain expertise, that is, our enhanced understanding of the underlying science of mining and mineral processing operations and the availability of a variety of powerful modeling-simulation tools make it possible to address the challenging problems facing the mining and mineral processing industry, in an integrated manner."

In this paper, various methods, such as XPS, XRD, SEM and zeta potential measurement are applied to investigate the action mechanism of sodium sulfide in flotation of lead and zinc oxysalt minerals. The experimental results show that the mechanisms of sodium sulfide in flotation of lead oxysalt minerals and zinc oxysalt minerals are different: on the surface of cerusite, there is lead sulfide phase formed under the reaction of sodium sulfide, resulting that the cerusite surface shows the form of galena, which is advantageous to the adsorption of anion collector and improves the floatability of cerusite as a result. On the surface of zinc oxysalt minerals, there is no zinc sulfide phase formed, but the sodium sulfide increases its surface electronegativity, and enhances the adsorption of cation collector lauryl amine, so the floatability of zinc oxysalt minerals is improved. The difference of action mechanisms of sodium sulfide on lead and zinc oxysalt minerals exactly explains the reason why different collectors are selected in the flotation of cerusite and smithsonite, which are both carbonate minerals although.

A novel ilmenite collector, tert-butyl benzoic hydroxamic acid (TBHA), was investigated in this paper. The flotation performance and adsorption mechanism of TBHA to ilmenite were evaluated through pure mineral flotation tests, ?-potential measurement and IR spectrum analysis. The experiment results indicated that TBHA exhibited strong collecting capability to ilmenite under pH 6.0-8.5. At pH 7.0-10.0, TBHA existed in the form of anionic species in aqueous solution, and the ?-potential measurement results showed the surface of ilmenite maintained negative and more negative after the adsorption TBHA on it, which inferred that TBHA might adsorb on the surface of ilmenite through chemical interaction. The IR spectrum analysis further confirmed the chemical interaction between TBHA and ilmenite surface. "Present paper deals with the investigation of a Hungarian pumice. Grinding experiments were carried out in a stirred media mill for various residence time. Ground samples were tested with laser particle size analyzer to determine and calculate the material fineness (particle size distribution and specific surface area). The lime adsorption capacity was measured to monitor the reactivity. Alkali activated cement paste was prepared using ground pumice with various alkali activators. Cube shaped specimens were produced from the paste and the uniaxial compressive strength was measured at the age of 7 days. The resulted alkali activated material structure was investigated by XRD and FTIR. The results of the experiments show that pumice fineness has strong impact on its hydraulic activity, hence on the compressive strength and the structure of the resulted binder. Relationships between grinding fineness, material structure and strength of the raw and mechanical activated material as well as the alkali activated cement were revealed. INTRODUCTION Pumice is a natural pozzolan which can be used as raw material for cementitious materials in limited portion owing to its low reactivity. Furthermore, due to its mineralogical composition it can be used for developing a new environmental friendly binder, namely alkali activated cements (AAC) which are inorganic alumina-silicate materials with good cementitious properties (Almalkawi et al., 2017; Özodabas and Yilmaz, 2013; Najimi et al. 2018; Yadollahi et al., 2015). Despite being a rather recent research topic, many papers and books have been published focusing on various aspects of alkali activation. There is great variety of raw materials that can be utilized for AAC production. However, primary raw materials are very expensive and secondary materials are heterogenous in composition. Therefore, a more homogeneous and low price silicate would help to balance the properties and cost of resulting cement and easing the way for commercialization of AAC. However, the control of its reactivity is of great importance which can be realized using mechanical activation by grinding (Juhász and Opoczky, 1990; Djobo et al., 2016; Mádai et al., 2015). The goal of present paper is to investigate the effect of mechanical activation of pumice on the properties of the resulted alkali activated cement."

A citric acid leaching test after heavy medium separation process was performed to remove the heavy metal contaminat such as Pb, Cu, and Zn from contaminated soil. The lead component was removed from soil by heavy medium separation whereas zinc component shows 0 % - 37.9 % removal ratio with particle size. The citric acid leaching was conducted to remove the remained zinc component. The removal ratio of Zn reached to more than 95 % under the conditions; 10 % in pulp density, 200 rpm in agitation speed, 50 °C, 2 mol/L in citric acid concentration at 2 hrs in leaching time. These results suggest that the heavy medium separation method followed by citric acid leaching is effective for treatment of soil contaminated with various chemical forms of heavy metal. In this paper, the development of research and practice on the separation process of fine complex Cu-S ore at a Copper Mine in south of China, was discussed. Since early 1980s, various processes were used, such as the process of bulk flotation-separation, the process of selection flotation and the process of iso-flotation. Especially when the process of selective flotation was put into operation, further development was achieved in beneficiation results, but the difficulty in separation of chalcopyrite from pyrite has not been solved yet, so causing a poor quality of Cu concentrate. The author has successfully developed a new separation process characterized by the use of collector thionocarbamate and fast flotation. The selectivity of fine chalcopyrite and pyrite was greatly improved. This process supplied a new route for the treatment of fine complex Copper sulphide ores.

"For the traditional principle of flotation cell design, or in the perspective of some researchers, the mixing effect of impeller for flotation cell is not only to suspend the particles off the bottom, but also to mix slurry well to achieve a uniform system. But for some special processing conditions, the depth profile of slurry concentration and particle size demonstrates an obvious difference. In the part around of the impeller in the cell, the slurry concentration is much higher than the part below the lip.For the vanadium titano-magnetite flotation process, distinguished with high concentration and large coarse particle size fraction, even though the concentration is very high, it can reach good gas dispersion, which is a fundamental principle for flotation cell design and application. The gas dispersion is not a challenge in the high slurry concentration environment, not only in the vertical direction, but in the cross section. Different levels (the distance from the lip is 400mm, 700mm, 1200mm, 1700mm, 2200mm, 2700mm) slurry in the flotation cell is sampled and analyzed. The slurry concentration of the 3 levels(1700mm, 2200mm, 2700mm) is about 55%, but the slurry concentration decreases from 55% to 25% sharply towards the lip.Therefore, a new understanding and viewpoint is presented, that the uniform system of slurry is not always reasonable for all of the flotation process. For some special process, if the coarse particles are needed to agitated well and transported to the upper cell, the quiescent zone in the upper cell will be destroyed and enhance the detachment probability for the coarse particles. The difference of slurry concentration and particle size fraction benefits the air dispersion and coarse mineral particles recovery.1.INTRODUCTIONNowadays, flotation is the most widely used separation process in the mineral processing industry. The importance of flotation technology in the global economy is significant. A rough estimate of the quantity of crushed ore treated by flotation is about nine billion tons per year, and the portion of base metals processed using this method is approximately 95% (Brewis, 1996)."

A new porous apatite product was prepared using phosphorite from Yichang China by a tem-plate-directed method in self-made reaction equipment under constant temperature and pressure. The product was characterized by XRD, FT-IR and SEM. The results showed that the product was a kind of micrometer porous sphere three-dimensionally structured by apatite nanoflakes, that the average thickness of nanoflakes was about 50 nm, that the average pore size was about 1.2 µm and that the particle average size was about 20 µm. Great amounts of Ca2+channel, high special surface area and regular spherical shape show the potential promising applications of this special porous apatite product in the fields of catalyst, medication, chemical engineering and environment engineering

The results of research on recovery of ammonium perrhenate from by-products of lead production are presented in the article. For the first time in the world, rhenium marketable products were produced on lead plant of Kazakhstan. Distribution of rhenium in lead production has been studied. During oxidative agglomeration of lead charge, 67.43% rhenium is sublimated and at that, 67.27% rhenium is trapped by the dusts of a system of gas purification, out of them 6.21% is transferred into different solutions, 1.89% into slime and only 0.09% into exhaust. During agglomerate smelting, up to 72% of its rhenium is sublimated and condensed in the dusts also. At leaching stage of sulphate product under dusts processing by the method of sulphatization, 15% of its content in the dusts is transferred into solution. The sorption method on the ionite ?N-21 has been proposed for recovery of rhenium from the solutions of sulphatization. At the same time, rhenium recovery from the dusts into commodity was 13%. The method of direct hydrometallurgy - leaching the dusts by solutions of sulphuric acid under presence of manganous concentrates, has been proposed as alternative method of recovery. This method has allowed increasing recovery of rhenium and other metals from the dusts into solution up to 90%~95%. Rhenium solvent extraction by ??? has been proposed for recovery of rhenium from the leaching solutions. At that, extraction of rhenium into marketable product from the dusts is above 75%.

Discontinuous and consecutive process was applied to probe into the Kinetics and adsorption theory for Cs+ adsorbed by Zeolites under the conditions of temperature, time and fixed-bed dynamic adsorption. It indicated that the sorption kinetics behavior of zeolite?s sorption on Cs+ is ac-cord with pseudo-secondary velocity equation, velocity constant k2=0.0005213 g?mg min-1, and equilibrium adsorptive capacity is 147.0588 mg?g-1; The equation can be expressed as: Y=0.0068X+0.0887; From the analyzing of diffusion coefficients on different temperatures and times, the coefficient of diffusion is not only related with the fabric of mineral and the character of ions but also the temperature and time; When the ambient temperature hoisted, the diffusion velocity augmented rapidly; Cs+ would get over a certain energy barrier when it enters into structure of zeo-lite; This energy is expressed by activation energy, and its value is E=131.668818 kJ?mol-1; There are two dominating adsorption mechanisms in the system of zeolite absorb Cs+: ionic interchange and surface coordinate adsorption.

"For a copper-sulfur polymetallic mine in south China, the main valuable minerals were chalcopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite. The flotability of pyrrhotite was similar with chalcopyrite and pyrite and it was easy to be oxidized. As a result, the indexes of copper concentrate and sulfur concentrate were unsatisfactory. Furthermore, the recycling of tailings water ulteriorly deteriorated the technical indexes of copper-sulfur ore beneficiation. After a large amount of experimental studies, under the condition that the tailings water recycling rate was 100%, the copper concentrate with a grade of 22.25%Cu and a recovery of 82.46% on average was obtained for the raw ore containing 0.517%Cu, 15.94%S, 25.46%Fe on average, through using new technology “magnetic separation-flotation” and effective adjustment of parameters in the industrial test which was continuously conducted for 14 shifts in 5 days with a scale of about 75t/d. Comparing with the production indexes (the copper concentrate with a grade of 17.49%Cu, the recovery was 62.27%) during the corresponding period, the grade of copper concentrate increased 4.76%Cu, and the recovery increased 20 percentage points. Besides, the indexes of sulfur concentrate gained a considerable improvement. Currently, the new technology was adopted in the design of the new-built plant with a scale of 7000t/d of this mine. The new technology provided powerful support for the tailings water recycling and indexes improvement of copper-sulfur ore beneficiation.INTRODUCTION Chalcopyrite was usually associated with pyrite and pyrrhotite in copper-sulfur ore. Due to the similar flotability, it was difficult to obtain copper concentrate and sulfur concentrate with high grade. Furthermore, sulfide ore was easy to be oxidized and a large amount of ions formed in the pulp by the dissolution of minerals, which made the pulp become acidic. As a result, pyrite and pyrrhotite were easy to be activated in acidic solution and their flotabilities became stronger. Meanwhile, hydrophilic film formed on the surface of chalcopyrite in raw ore. The flotability of chalcopyrite became weaker and it made the separation of chalcopyrite from pyrite and pyrrhotite more difficult. So it was more difficult for copper and sulfur recovering with the recycling of tailings water containing high content of heavy metal ions and reagents."

Despite increasing demand, the supply of silver is limited by its inadequate recovery from ores. Due to its scarcity in nature, its high ore variability and complex mineralogy of current silver deposits, its recovery by mineral froth flotation presents a real challenge for process engineers. A silver ore often contains significant amounts of five to ten different silver minerals and knowledge of the mineralogy is a necessary precursor to flotation testing. In this work, a complex silver ore was treated by using batch laboratory flotation, in an effort to find the best experimental conditions to obtain the optimal silver recovery. Mineralogical characterization of feed samples was conducted using a combination of tools, namely the mineral liberation analyzer (MLA) and inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), which indicated that most of the silver occurred as ?invisible? silver in pyrite. The pyrite assay of the ore was approximately 4%. The ore was processed in two flotation stages. The first stage, sulphide flotation, aimed to collect a sulphide mineral rich concentrate; then a non-sulphide flotation stage was performed by adding sodium sulphide and collectors to the remaining material in the cell, with the objective of obtaining a pyrite rich concentrate. To reach the target recovery of silver from this ore, various variables were altered. In the first stage: mixed collectors, activators, dispersants, and mainstream inert grinding were assessed. In the second stage, the conditions for sulphidization and subsequent flotation were both investigated. From the grade recovery curves for silver and sulphur it was possible to observe a similar metallurgical behavior for both elements, supporting the results given by the mineralogical characterization. The Cu-Co ore studied here belongs to the oxide type. The oxidation rates of copper and cobalt are69.30% and 78.78%, respectively. The content of Cu in ROM is 1.34% and that of Co is 0.096%. The ore contains 4.64% carbon.Based on the process mineralogy and previous metallurgy tests, the principalprocess flow-sheet of ?grinding fines 80% -0.074mm, sulphide flotation followed by oxide flotation, and flash flotation for oxides? has been determined.The handling of carbon is determined through tests. The depressant PNL-1 depressed carbon effectively, improved the recovery of sulphide minerals and reduced the reagents consumption.The operation of the flow-sheet was also changed to better at the same time.
