Silver (Ag) filler is the most attractive choice among all the conductive fillers of die attach materials for the attachment of silicon devices because of its balanced properties and relatively low cost. However, a major problem of silver is that it electrochemically migrates in the presence of moisture and applied bias. In microelectronic devices, silver migration can occur between adjacent conductors/electrodes, which leads to the formation of dendrites and eventually results in short-circuit failure. In order to assess the reliability of these conductive fillers, an investigation for two types of Agfilled die attach materials was done using the water drop test at room temperature and using a 1000 hour temperature-humidity-bias (THB) test under 85 ºC and 85% RH conditions. Four different bias/voltages and six different electrode distance spacing were used. Both dendrite and cloud/lace-like growths were observed as a result of the electrochemical migration of silver, Water drop test results revealed that increasing the applied bias/voltage and decreasing electrode spacing causes migration to occur faster, thus resulting into shorter time to fail (TTF). It was also observed that the growth rate of the dendrites from the cathode increased linearly as the dendrite approached the anode, probably due to a combination of increased ion availability and electric field. A minimum applied bias of 3 volts was required for migration to occur in Epoxy A as compared to 2 volts for Epoxy C. The higher migration voltage requirement for Epoxy A was attributed to the higher volume resistivity of the said epoxy. In addition to the minimum voltage requirement, it was observed that a minimum electric field of about 1 volt/mm is required for migration to occur. The 1000 hour THB testing did not result into any failures. It is surmised that the presence of condensed moisture is another requirement for migration. Such condition is not present during the THB testing.

THERE are, broadly speaking, three classes of refractories: acid, basic, and neutral. Fireclay, diaspore, silica, and the sillimanite group of minerals are included in the acid class, which for the most part are not very resistant to basic slags. The neutra! class includes chrome, graphite, and silicon carbide, while most important in the basic class are magnesite and dolomite. Although chrome is a neutral refractory, it has no sharp distinction from magnesitic refractoriness. The two are mineralogically (1) and chemically related, and there is available on the market a complete range of brick from straight chrome to straight magnesite. In many indus trial applications, one. type may be replaced by another. The present paper is confined entirely to such refractories. Molecular recognition technology (MRT) has a wide range of applications in the hydrometallurgical and chemical processing industries for the selective removal of iron as well as various other impurities from a variety of streams, including aqueous solutions through a wide pH range, as well as organic solutions. An example of a commercial application is provided for the removal of iron from an aluminum chlorohydrate stream. In this example, MRT has a selectivity for iron relative to aluminum which is significantly higher than that of ion exchange resins. A discussion of MRT capabilities for other impurities and streams is also provided.

This report investigates the limited use of super large backhoes in surface mines around the world. The demand for super large (> 700 t) hydraulic excavators is rising and most of the machines are sold as front shovel (FS) application. Despite advantages in faster cycle times super large backhoe (BH) machines are a minority (ca. 1% of the total machine population). This investigation is based upon the comparison between the volumes available to the BH and FS in one block and before the machine needs to move. The working conditions are created with standard parameters as given by Original Equipment Manufacturers of hydraulic excavators regarding bench height, angle, and material density. The travel amount of both machine types is derived from these volumes and compared. Furthermore, the travel amount of super large BHs is compared to the travel amount of smaller mining BHs and evaluated based on attachment length and bucket size. The calculations conclude that the volume of material recoverable in a single spot is about 75% higher for FSs. This leads to an increased travel for BHs. The combination of both the increased appearance of electrical driven machines (in the class of > 700 t excavators) and the travel amount lead to a high risk of damaging the cable or the excavator. Enlarged wear on the travelling parts is also attended by the higher travelling. A direct comparison of commonly found working set ups shows that the ratio between volumes is 32% which leads to an increased travel amount. In comparison with a 250 t BH, the calculation shows that the smaller BH is able to reach nearly 50% of the volume of the super large BHs. The main reason for this is the respectively high reach on smaller machines which, combined with other factors, leads to a significantly higher number of BHs in lighter classes.

Directionally solidified (DS) Rene 80 Superalloy was tested in thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) over the temperature range 500-900°C and plastic strain levels from 0.2 to 0.8% using a DSI Gleeble thermal simulator. Thermo-mechanical testing was carried out on the parent material in the conventional solution treated and aged condition (STA), as well as gas tungsten arc welded with an IN-738 filler, followed by solution treatment and ageing. Comparison of the base TMF unwelded alloy with that of the welded and heat treated alloy showed that varying crack initiation mechanisms, notably oxidation either by stress assisted grain boundary oxidation, or associated with grain boundary MC carbides fatigue crack propagation along grain boundaries and creep deformation were operating, leading to different "weakest link" failure initiation points.

Reference to the original use of the terms Laurentian and Huronian (and its extension), shows that the former was applied to granitized sedimentary and metamorphic pre-Cambrian rocks, and the gneissoid igneous rocks associated therewith, and the latter to non-fossiliferous rocks supposed to be later. But it appears from the work of Collins, Quirke and others that there is more or less of an overlap, and that of the original Laurentian the Grenville limestone, and some of the granites, may be later than the lowest part of the original Huronian. Before we can decide whether to abandon one or the other of the two terms, or how to delimit them, it is important to know the extent of this overlap. The Pb :U ratio, though not to be depended upon too minutely, does give a real idea of the age of a mineral as it increases with the decay of uranium, and so is greater the longer the time since the uranium was separated: and there are reasonable prospects of help there from in getting a knowledge of the relative age of different granites to assist in solving the problem, as facts already collected show. 1. "In 2000-2009, Highland Valley Copper (HVC) tested new generation 660 mm cyclones supplied by various manufacturers in an aim to replace existing first generation 762 mm cyclones without success. Due to plant infrastructure limitations, new generation larger (838 and 800 mm) cyclones were not feasible. In 2010, an approach of testing hybrid 800 mm diameter cyclones was initiated by HVC. The hybrid cyclone consists of an 800 mm cyclone upper head section and the use of existing 762 mm cyclone conical sections. Three hybrid 800 mm cyclones were engineered and fabricated, targeting a throughput of 850-950 mtph and were installed in the E line cyclone cluster. Since starting operation on September 20, 2011, three hybrid 800 mm cyclones have been running at combined throughput ranges of 750 to 1050 mtph. Based on plant Daily Met Reports, the test hybrid cyclones demonstrated a decrease in misplacement of coarse copper bearing material to the cyclone overflow and better cyclone efficiency when compared to the existing 762 mm cyclones at the same throughput. The hybrid 800 mm cyclones also demonstrated significantly higher capacity per unit when compared to the existing cyclones. Based on the improvement demonstrated in the full plant trials, HVC decided to install the new hybrid 800 mm cyclones in all five grinding lines starting in July, 2012. A more detailed discussion of the full plant trials and initial results of the first complete retrofit of E line will be presented. INTRODUCTIONHighland Valley Copper Partnership (HVC) is Canada’s largest base metals mine and one of the world’s largest producers of Cu-in-concentrate. The mine, located in the central interior of British Columbia, is owned (97.5% interest) and operated by Teck Resources Ltd. In 2011, HVC produced about 210 million lbs. of Cu and 8 million lbs. of Mo. HVC’s Mill Modernization Project (MOP), which was budgeted for $475 M, is currently under intensive construction and is scheduled for commissioning in Q1 2014. The following description was valid at the time of writing this paper.The operation has been expanded a number of times since the startup of the original Lornex mill in 1972. The plant started up with two 9.75 m (32 foot) diameter primary SAG mills. It was expanded in 1981 with the addition of a 10.36 m (34 foot) diameter SAG mill. In 1988, the Highmont concentrator grinding mills and flotation section were moved and attached to the Lornex mill site. This added two10.36 m (34 foot) diameter AG primary mills to the Highland mill. This brought the total number of primary mills to five referred to as Line A, B, C, D and E: three SAG mills (A, B and C) each with two ball mills in parallel and two AG mills (D and E) each with one ball mill. Each AG mill line is equipped with one short head pebble crusher. Ball mill circuits are classified using 8 clusters of ten Linatex 762 mm cyclones to reach a target P80 330 micron (equivalent 43% +100 mesh), before the cyclone overflow product advances to the bulk flotation circuit."

"A series of new, grease-based, solvent free open gear lubricants were developed to meet the demanding service requirements of mining equipment. The use of these products has resulted in better performance under conditions of temperature extremes and in terms of longer component lives. They have gained widespread acceptance within the mining communities for such applications as the lubrication of mining shovels, draglines and ball mills.These products are WHMIS non-controlled and are environmentally acceptable. The benefits and advantages of using this type of product to lubricate mining equipment as well as the field evaluation and experience will be discussed."

"A comparison between hydrogen-diffusion-based micro-porosity formation and growth behaviour of two important aluminium foundry alloys, B206 (Al-Cu) and A356 (Al-Si-Mg) is presented in this paper. Specifically, the predicted pore size and pore fraction distribution of these two alloys resulting from directional solidification and identical hydrogen concentration are investigated numerically based on a model proposed by Yao et al. (2011. Met. & Mat. Tran. A. 42A, 4137–4148). This model takes into consideration the initial hydrogen content in the melt, the cooling rate, the partitioning of hydrogen between the solid and liquid phases, and the evolution in solid fraction with temperature. Due to different alloy chemistries, the activity of hydrogen in B206 and A356 are quite different, as are the solidification range and the resulting solidification microstructure. Being a primary alloy, B206 has dendritic microstructure and solidifies over nearly 135°C (505–641°C), whereas A356 contains fifty percent eutectic microstructure, and solidifies over 80°C (533–613°C). This allows a very different behaviour of micropores i.e. the effective pore radius in B206 is quite a bit lower as compared to A356, as is the pore number density. The evolution of local hydrogen concentration in liquid metal is analysed and compared for both the alloys.INTRODUCTION Over the past decades, the demand for materials with enhanced strength-to-weight ratios has significantly increased in the aerospace and automobile industries in order to improved fuel efficiency. For many automotive components, particularly shape castings, the trend is towards replacing ferrous alloys with aluminium alloys. The increase in the use of Al is primarily due to its low density, about one-third that of steel, and its relatively good strength that allows for weight reduction without reducing performance. Presently, Al-Si based alloys (e.g. A356) are the most prevalent due to their good mechanical performance in strength-to-weight ratio and excellent castability (Atwood et.al., 2000). However, superior mechanical properties can be achieved using Al-Cu alloys. For example, the alloy B206 offers a higher strength while retaining excellent ductility (Poirier et.al., 1987)."

"In the Introduction the author briefly discusses the company history as it relates to the development of its contracts with the Japanese steel mills. The main part of the text describes how Coleman Collieries Limited approached the problem of mining coal profitably in thick, steeply inclined seams. For many years a basic room-andpillar system was worked by conventional methods. Main roadways were driven on strike across the mineable area. These roadways acted as haulage routes for coal, materials and men. Rooms were developed to the rise of the main haulage route by pairs of men using air-operated hand picks. As these rooms advanced the miners would lay and extend a sheetiron chute down which mined coal would gravitate to a controlled loading point, where it was loaded into trains of mine cars. Connecting roadways or ""OFFS"" were driven at predetermined intervals between adjacent rooms, forming pil1ars or blocks. Extraction of the blocks followed on a line conducive to good strata control some distance behind the developing rooms. A need for higher productivity, expansion of the operations and a scarcity of qualified miners resulted in the company deciding to mechanize its underground mines. Joy 6 CM continuous miners and 10 SC shuttle cars were selected as being machines that could reasonably negotiate the problems associated with the pitching seam. The equipment, nonetheless, has definite limitations and Coleman therefore developed a modified version of the room-and-pi11ar system such that the miners and cars could work on cross pitch. In the area described, main roadways were driven to the rise on an average gradient of 12 degrees. Panels, which consisted of two parallel roads with interconnecting cross-cuts, were then developed on strike to a boundary point. Blocks formed in the development of the panels were subsequently extracted on retreat. Problems associated with each phase of the operation are thoroughly discussed, together with roadway support methods and equipment used for the conveyance of coal and materials."

Medium carbon, low alloy, high-strength steels containing Ni, Cr, and Mo are used for the fabrication of various types of high-strength fasteners required for launch vehicle structures. Cold heading properties and response to hardening and tempering are the essential requirements of the material for fabrication and application, respectively. Combining these two requirements is essentially warranted in high-strength fastener-grade steels. Cold heading properties require ductility, which can be achieved through spheroidizing treatments. In the absence of a suitable spheroidizing cycle for medium carbon 3.8 Ni, 1.8 Cr, 0.3 Mo steel, experiments were carried out with a theoretical understanding of the alloy system. This paper presents the experiments and results obtained after a spheroidizing treatment, which was carried out to optimize the process. Hardness measurements were carried out and microstructural studies were conducted to assess the spheroidization process and to determine the optimal spheroidization parameters.

"THE TITLE I have chosen is certainly not one of those self-explanatory ones. I shall endeavour to make its significance clear during my remarks but, in the hope of minimizing that inevitable exodus which follows a good lunch such as this, I am going to withhold the final key to its meaning until the very last sentence of this talk.Some explanation is due at the beginning, however, so for those of you unfamiliar with Spanish I will explain that casa means house, or home. The casa about which I am going to talk necessitates a wide .and generous interpretation of the word, because I am using it to indicate principally that portion of the North American continent which is the home, in the western hemisphere, of British and American ideals of justice and freedom, the dignity of the individual and his right to exercise private initiative .and engage in private enterprise. In a wider sense, I am including the entire western hemisphere, which may yet stand as the last bulwark of political and industrial democracy.As for the treasures of which I am about to speak, may I remind you that there are no• material treasures but those derived from the earth, and they are derived by one of two processes, -mining and farming. These two fundamental industries are the basis, and the sole material basis, of our welfare, our wealth, our very existence. From farming, whether it be farming of the land. or farming of the sea, we obtain the food to keep us alive, healthy and able to work."

An industry survey has been conducted by the Queen's University Mining Engineering Department of 30 Canadian mining organizations to determine how effectively newly graduated mining engineers meet the needs of the industry. The principal objectives of the survey were to evaluate, and thus provide focus on change for, curricula being taught at Canadian mining engineering schools in service of the industry's needs; to provide feedback on current industry expectations; and to reinforce contacts with the industry as a means of providing future collaboration. A strong focus of the survey was placed upon industry's perception of the special attributes of engineering hires and applicability of student academic training to meet their industrial requirements. In providing this detailed summary of corporate responses, a clearer understanding of the mining industry's expectations of engineering training at Canadian colleges and universities has been gained.

The need for selective metal separations has increased as the mining industry encounters more complex ore bodies and the demand for higher performance end products expands. Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) is a green chemistry process that involves use of SuperLig® resins to selectively remove desired metals from a variety of solutions in mining and metals processing industries. Recoverable metal concentrations can range from multiple g/L to mg/L or less. The MRT separation process is based on green chemistry principles and can efficiently produce high purity metal products with minimal waste generation and energy usage. In this paper, applications of MRT to metal recovery and purification in the minor and specialty metals industry will be presented and discussed. Examples will be described involving cobalt, nickel, zinc, rhenium, iridium, indium, germanium, bismuth, and cadmium, as well as removal of lead and iron from process streams.

"Dust control is an increasingly important consideration for all mining operations from a health, safety, environmental and maintenance perspective. Modern mining operations incorporate a variety of mechanical dust control techniques into design however in many cases these engineered systems are unable to meet desired fugitive dust level targets. In these cases a variety of chemical dust suppression options are available to operators to assist in meeting their targets. This paper provides an overview of available chemistries, discussion of application techniques and equipment requirements and available performance monitoring technologies. This paper will also include a number of case histories discussing the treatment approach chosen, challenges encountered, chemical feed, storage and application equipment, monitoring techniques employed and results achieved.INTRODUCTIONDust FundamentalsFugitive dust by definition is an aerosol consisting of particulate matter suspended in a gaseous medium. Aerosols can include suspensions of particulate (solids) or sprays (liquids) or a mixture of both. Of particular concern from an occupational health and safety perspective are aerosols of particulate matter due to their involvement in classical occupations lung diseases such as silicosis, poisoning through chronic exposure to compounds such as lead and beryllium and expected involvement in more modern identified conditions such as cancer, asthma, and a host of other respiratory and non-respiratory conditions which may be caused or influenced through exposure to dust.According to the ""Glossary of Atmospheric Chemistry Terms"" (IUPAC, 1990), ""Dust: Small, dry, solid particles projected into the air by natural forces, such as wind, volcanic eruption, and by mechanical or man-made processes such as crushing, grinding, milling, drilling, demolition, shoveling, conveying, screening, bagging, and sweeping. Dust particles are usually in the size range from about 1 to 100 µm in diameter, and they settle slowly under the influence of gravity."" It should be noted that the behavior of particulates with respect to settling rate in air is a function of particle mass and shape and therefore the geometric size of the particle can be misleading. Occupational hygienists utilize the concept of particle aerodynamic diameter as a more representative reflection of particle size. Particle aerodynamic diameter, is defined as ""the diameter of a hypothetical sphere of density 1 g/cm3 having the same terminal settling velocity in calm air as the particle in question, regardless of its geometric size, shape and true density."" The expression of particle size as aerodynamic diameter allows for a more consistent understanding of particle behavior both from a settling perspective as well as from the perspective of how dust particles will behave in the respiratory tract. Figure 1 illustrates settling rates for particles of various aerodynamic diameters. The relationship between particle size and settling rate is important for understanding what size of particles must be addressed by dust control strategies as well as what particle sizes represent the most danger from an exposure and occupational health perspective."

The growth in the supply and use of energy over the past years has been tremendous, but our very closeness and familiarity have somewhat distorted the viewpoint, particularly of the younger generation. To many of us who remember the wonderful satisfaction of our first responsibility for directing two horsepower hitched to a farm cart or hay wagon, there still arises a feeling of some awe at the casual flick of the switch with which our sons and daughters summon to their convenience the service of some one hundred or more horsepower.Energy is the vital component of our existence and, no matter what contempt our day-to-day familiarity may •breed, it is wise to .pause from time to time and consider our national energy standing. Have we still capital in the bank? Are our expenditures wisely •conceived and well directed? Is provision being made for the years •ahead for the needs of our children and our children's children?"
