In the framework of the optimization of Teniente Converter operation the new system of automatic flux feeding through gar-gun was implemented in the Potrerillos Smelter, Codelco Chile, Salvador Division. The control algoritm based on simple iron and silica balance adjusted by empirical coefficients was incorporated in the logical programmer. The programmer works in real time gathering information from the plant instrumentation events and introduced chemical assays of concentrate, slag and flux. Through the auto-tuning of the automatic operation the criterions of optimal flux dosage were determined. Four month of operation of the automatic flux feeding system demonstrated the stabilization of magnetite content in the slag in the narrow range from 18 to 20% and the decrease of flux consumption, corresponding to annual savings US$ 340,000. Additionally, the automatic system helps operators in the control room in fast determination of optimal fluxing and avoid the errors in flux dosage affecting the slag quality and its impact on refractory wear.

"The property of the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company; Limited; is in the Wells-Barkerville district of Cariboo mining division. It consists of a group of 106 Crown granted mineral claims and fractions; and extends for over 6 miles along what is termed the Barkerville gold belt. The main portal and mine camp are half a mile south of Wells; which lies at the northeast end of Jack of Clubs lake and is reached by a 55-mile motor road from Quesnel; the northern terminus of the Pacific Great Eastern railway.Gold-bearing quartz veins were discovered on the surface in various parts of the property by different prospectors as far back as 1877, but the work that led to the formation of the present company was performed by Al Sanders in the year 1926. Sanders dug trenches and drove small adits on quartz veins containing gold above what is now known as the Sanders zone. Very little underground work has been done beneath the earliest known discovery-the B.C. vein. The Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company was formed in the autumn of 1926. Emission of perfluorocarbon gases, CF4 and C2F6, produced during anode effects from aluminum electrolytic cells are a significant part of the total equivalent CO2 emitted by aluminum plants. With the current concerns about global warming, the reduction of these PFC gases is a key issue in reducing greenhouse gases for a smelter and achieving GHG emission agreement goals. This paper will present the approach taken by the Alcoa vertical-stud Soderberg plant in Baie-Comeau to reduce GHG emissions generated during anode effects and close emission gaps with other Alcoa Soderberg plants. The approach has been to adapt the existing technology in place at the Baie-Comeau Soderberg plant. PFC emissions were lowered by reducing both the anode effect duration and frequency through different methods. Examples of change include: implementing skimming practices and wider side crust break area for better alumina dissolution in bath, increasing the ratio between reacted and pure alumina, reducing the time to declare anode effects in the potrooms, implementing best work practices and finally educating the workforce on the importance of reducing PFC emissions.

"Within the research project “Mine Development” (Fettweis and Moser, 1990) a PC-based mine database has been built up since 1991 and so far includes detailed technical and economic data of about 150 under-ground hardrock mines in industrialized countries worldwide. These data represent about 50% of the underground hardrock mines in west and central Europe, Scandinavia, United States, Canada and Australia (Fig. 1). The mining operations included in the database have been visited directly and analyzed with respect to their deposit conditions, their general design and layout and also their operational and economic performance.The main aim of the Mine Database is to make a contribution to an improved planning of new underground hardrock mines. An analysis of current mine planning practices shows, that both personnel and company experience is still a dominant factor in planning new underground hardrock operations. Through the information included in the Mine Database the experience of a single per-son or company is supplemented by the experience of a wider group of people. The Mine Database makes the huge amount of experience that is available worldwide in the field of under-ground mining accessible for new mining projects. From that a contribution to a more reliable mine planning procedure based on the performance of existing mining operations is expected.In addition to its use in planning new mining operations, the Mine Database can con-tribute to the exchange of technical data among different mining operations, especially on equipment performance, etc. Such an information service is offered by the Department of Mining Engineering & Mineral Economics in Leoben and is already being used by different mining companies. To respect proprietory information, company specific information is not released under any circumstances.The cost of building up the Mine Database, so far, is about US$500.000 — two thirds of which is labour, and one third, travel."

IN 1952, prompted by the great demand of the Canadian drilling and foundry industries for sodium bentonite, the Geological Department of Magnet Cove Barium Corporation, Limited began an extensive search for bentonite deposits throughout western Canada. Their efforts were rewarded in 1958, when substantial deposits of high quality material were found approximately 100 miles southeast of Edmonton, Alberta. The bentonite material, a part of the Edmonton formation in the Upper Cretaceous, is located approximately nine miles south of the town of Rosalind. The land where the bentonite lies has in places .been eroded by stream and glacial action to form a wide gully, convenient for strip mining methods (see Figure 1). The bentonite bed is almost flat-lying, dipping to the southwest at approximately 12 feet per mile. The main bed is 8 to. 10 feet thick and is covered with 15 to 25 feet of overburden. Before stripping, the area is drilled and sampled to evaluate the quantity and quality of the bentonite.

We report the studies of Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEM FC) and hydrogen storage materials at McMaster University for the last 14 years. From the initial investigation of ionic conduction mechanism to the revelation of the origin of non-Arrhenius temperature dependence, as well as the synthesis and characterization of high temperature polymer electrolytes, both experimental and theoretical works have been compiled for the fuel cell membranes. In addition to the discovery of suppressed ionic conduction in Electrode-Membrane Assembly (EMA) and novel hydrocarbon PEMs based on micro-emulsion, the first evidence of hydrogen adsorption saturation by carbon nano-tubes was also achieved, which has been the bottleneck for the application of PEM FC. Prior to our study, a number of controversial publications have claimed the hydrogen capacity of these materials to be between 0.1 to 10.0 wt.%, and none demonstrated a plateau of adsorption with pressure that is consistent with monolayer saturation. Others suggested that the tube bundle structure is opened under high pressure to enable higher adsorption on newly uncovered surfaces, but received no confirmation. Using our home made high-pressure instrument with in-situ electrical probes, we found that a plateau is nearly achieved at about 300 atm in the room temperature isotherm, and that nanotube bundles actually compress with pressure instead of splitting, using in-situ electrical measurements.

The precipitation of Fe(III) to form ferrihydrite in the presence of arsenic is the United States EPA's Best Demonstrated Available Technology for treating arsenic-containing hydrometallurgical solutions and waste streams. This technology has been widely adopted throughout the world and developments have been well reviewed. The adsorption and long-term stability of ferrihydrite can be improved by co-precipitating Fe(III) and Al(III) together to form an aluminum-modified ferrihydrite. Arsenate adsorption into ferrihydrite and modified ferrihydrite as a function of pH, Fe/As or (Al+Fe)/As mole ratio, and the initial As(V) concentration is presented and compared. The results of long-term aging of both adsorbents at 70°C for over a year are also summarized.

THE time has come when, as your President, 1 turn the helm over to my worthy successor. When 1 was reminded by our Secretary that 1 had to prepare an address for this meeting, 1 was at a loss for a subject. In the hope of inspiration 1 perused the records of our Society for some years past. 1 found in these records that many problems in need of solution relative to industry in Nova Scotia were discursively dealt with and that sound thought was given to the solution of these problems, with a natural leaning, of course, to problems pertaining to the mining industry. 1 found also that some of the reasoning was remarkably prophetie. Some of these subjects and problems were: The use of pulverized coal to generate power instead of hydro-electric power; rural electrification; the importance of youth training for an efficient place in industry; the proper marketing of coal; the fuels competing with coal; the need for better in-dustrial relations between employer and employee; better education for success in the social field as applied to industry; and Canadian unity. The issue of some of these copies has been forced upon us by war. For instance, there appears to be no marketing problem for coal, nor does there ? seem to be a marketing problem for anything just at present. The problem of the coal producer just now is supply and transportation. Also, at present, coal fe.ars no competitors, such as oil-and not even hardwood. Many large companies now have an industrial Relations or Personnel Manager and department. Furthermore, we have been compelled of necessity to train our young men, and women also, for both industry and war. However, war does not solve these problems and, with the return to normal times, we may be faced with the same troubles in even greater measure. My reason for mentioning these copies is to point out that, as mining men, we are aU desirous of progress in every industry, not only the mining industry; and that mining men are able to see clearly ahead. In normal times, especially in matters not directly affecting the mining industry, we are inclined to let matters take their own good rime, or let the government do it. We do not seem to realize that these necessary and desirable changes can be made in times of peace-instead of being forced upon us by war or other social upheavals-by the method of sound thought and action to the desired end.

Simulated TMCP using a Gleeble was undertaken to evaluate the effect of the austenite to ferrite cooling rate, coiling temperatures of either 400°C or 500°C and the magnitude of plastic deformation at the coiling temperature on the hardness of a Grade 483 (X70) steel. For comparable apparent cooling rates and deformation conditions, the hardness of the samples were independent of coiling temperature The application of a minimum compressive deformation > 8% was required to increase hardness at both simulated coiling temperatures of 400°C and 500°C. An increase in hardness was also observed with increased cooling times between 800°C and 500°C (i.e., slower cooling rates).

Although not considered a high risk pollutant as compared to toxic metals and acidity, environmental agencies worldwide are proposing regulations to control sulphate in effluents and drainages by setting a threshold value varying between 250 mg/L and 500 mg/L. The aim of this study was thus to compare four different techniques for removing sulphate ions from mining/metallurgy effluents. The first alternative studied was sulphate removal by precipitation as ettringite. Treating a synthetic solution containing 1650 mg/L sulphate at 22±1 ºC resulted in removals close to 85% during continuous precipitation. Sulphate sorption was also investigated using three different ion exchange resins as well as limestone. Fixed bed experiments produced sulphate loadings of up to 70 mg SO4 2-/L resin, at pH 2.0. In neutral wastewaters, limestone is also a potential adsorbent producing a maximum particle loading of 19 mg/g. Sulphate sorption on limestone seems to be an alternative to treating mine waters with sulphate concentrations below the 1200-2000 mg/L range, where lime precipitation is not effective. Subsequently, sulphate removal by sulphate reducing bacteria was also investigated and it was observed that reactor’s hydrodynamic conditions and the choice of substrate are important factors for the process. The different technical aspects of each technology are addressed.

This paper deals with the drilling and blasting methods employed at the Cassiar mine, which is located just south of the B.C.-Yukon border. It covers both the "pit" and "peak" mining operations. Specific problems, such as working in frozen ground, are discussed, and the breaking characteristics of the various rock formations are outlined. "The inlet air velocity profile of any surface mine ventilation fan is an important factor when designing the connecting ductwork from the mine shaft collar to the fan. Deficient fan performance can be the result of ductwork that adds unnecessary pressure loss and/or adversely influences the fan inlet air conditions (velocity profile). The need for optimized inlet air conditions begins with discussing the process of performance testing during the development of the fan performance curve. Additional discussions include design of the shaft collar connection and the connecting ductwork. A preferred design of ductwork for parallel fan installations will be illustrated.INTRODUCTIONThe inlet air velocity profile of any surface installed mine ventilation fan is one of the most important factors to consider when designing the connecting ductwork from the mine shaft collar to the fan. Oftentimes deficient fan performance can be traced to poorly designed ductwork that adds unnecessary pressure loss and/or adversely influences the fan inlet air conditions (velocity profile). Such designs may lead to added power requirement, excessive vibration and noise, and reduced fan performance.Understanding the need for optimized inlet air conditions begins with discussing the process utilized when factory testing takes place during the development of the fan performance curve.Additional discussions include design considerations for the shaft collar connection, the connecting ductwork, and fan inlet. Illustrations of cost savings and pressure losses will be included for audience consideration. The design of ductwork for parallel fan installations on the surface is another issue that requires consideration. A preferred method will be illustrated.The selection of accessory components, such as self-closing doors, can also add to the potential for reduced fan performance. Several components will be discussed.An elementary presentation of the Air Movement and Control Association (AMCA) Standard 201 “Fans and Systems” will be included to provide background for those audience members that want additional technical explanations of the need for a uniform inlet air velocity profile at the fan inlet."

Network communication note is a cloud system for an earthwork project. It enables backhoe operators and dump truck drivers to monitor their own works in progress currently and performed up to the present, and to have opportunity to reflect on their own bearings in the earthwork operations, and then could increase their situational awareness to the actual work conditions. First, this paper presents problems and purpose. Secondly, the configuration of the network communication note is reported. Thirdly, examples of communications enhanced by the network communication note are shown. Finally, remarks are described.

The need for quantitative mineralogical data to characterize ore types before they are processed is becoming increasingly necessary. Mineralogical data (modal abundances, grain size, liberation/locking characteristics, mineral textures and associations) can provide invaluable information to facilitate the identification of metallurgical issues that may arise during processing of a particular ore. This paper will discuss the use of QEMSCAN analysis in conjunction with bench scale flotation test work to determine metallurgical characteristics for several ore types that will be fed to the Morenci concentrator upon commencement.

After nine years on a 36 hour schedule and two programs of creeping, the Alcoa Deschambault Potroom of faced the necessity of changing its organization for many reasons: the anodes butts were too small, the anode schedule was unbalanced, the iron content in the metal trends had increased, the metal tapping volume did not convene with crucible capacity and the liquid measurement task was delayed by tapping activities. A kaizen activity inspired the Potroom department to improve the organization. A team of 15 people including the process engineer, the process technician, team supervisors and Potroom operators developed a scenario, which would permit flexibility to creep pots if energy is available and an increase of added value production.This paper will describe the systematic approach, the communication method, the trials, the changes, and our success, along with the problems experienced by the team during the adaptation of Alcoa Deschambault Potroom organization over a 20 month period. In order to evaluate the impact of air quality control on mine design, a few examples are given of cases in wh.ich ventilation has affected the economics of the total design problem. Principles for the drainage of gas contaminants are shown, and the contamination control problems created by differential pressures in complicated booster fan installations are discussed. The paper also deals with the use of advanced mathematics for solving some of the ventilation problems likely to be encountered.

Bio(hydro)metallurgy is the latest development in the ongoing search for efficient and economic metal winning processes. In addition to bioleaching, other biotechnology-based applications are becoming more and more accepted. In this paper the THIOMET process for general effluent treatment is described. With this process, it is possible to produce sulfide on-site and on-demand and to use the sulfide to precipitate metals, even selectively when required. The process is ideally suited as a treatment to remove metals after, for example, an acid regeneration process. Another process is proposed that deals with stainless steel pickling bleeds. Such effluents typically contain nitrate, iron, nickel, chromium(VI) and other species. This one process handles these compounds, as well as other metals.

"Rare earth elements are becoming increasingly in demand, due to their prevalence in both renewable energy devices and high-end electronics. The characterization of the composition, morphology and volume fraction of the various phases that have valuable rare earths in the ores are needed to find the optimal industrial process to extract the ores containing the rare earths. Rare earth-bearing minerals contain many elements with the M-and L-lines overlap, requiring a high degree of resolution, pushing the boundaries of scanning electron microscopy quantitative analysis. Enhanced microscopy at a high spatial resolution with improved x-ray quantitative analysis enables the accurate determination of the distribution of the desired rare earths in various mineral phases. INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements are becoming increasingly in demand, due to their prevalence in both renewable energy devices and high-end electronics. From batteries (lanthanum and cerium), to magnets (dysprosium and neodymium) and lighting (yttrium), the rare earth elements are crucial to the advancement of technology, and to energy saving devices (Crow, 2011). The goal of this project is to characterize the composition, morphology and volume fraction of the various phases that have valuable rare earths in the ores in order to estimate the economical VALUES (of the ores and to find the optimal industrial process to extract the ores containing the rare earths. High spatial resolution imaging and x-ray microanalysis are needed to reach this goal. In this work, the results obtained with a cold-field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and a silicon drift detector (SDD) energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) detector at low accelerating voltage are compared to experimental conditions typically used with electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) instrument.With this improvement, a detailed scientific analysis of the composition of these, and other, ores will become possible with a SEM/EDS system. This will help to better understand how such ores were formed, hence assisting in finding them, and to better understand how to process them in preparation for high end industrial applications, namely through mineral processing."

The potential of a bacterial strain isolated from water samples collected from a chromite mine in Odisha, India has been assessed for the bioremediation of hexavalent chromium, a toxic environmental pollutant. The isolate was identified as Sphingopyxis sp., a Gram negative bacterium, adopting molecular biological protocols and biochemical characterization techniques. Detailed investigations on the bioremoval of Cr(VI) were carried out using Sphingopyxis sp. cells and the various parameters affecting the biosorption process were evaluated. About 55 % biosorption of Cr(VI) was obtained using Sphingopyxis sp. bacterial cells and the residual chromium in solution was found to be bio-reduced to the trivalent form, namely Cr(III). Thus, complete bioremediation of Cr(VI) could be achieved using the mine isolate, with contributions from both biosorption and bioreduction mechanisms. The Cr(VI) biosorption isotherm obtained for the isolate was found to follow a typical Langmuirian behavior and the free energy value of biosorption was determined to be ~-25 kJ/mol, indicative of involvement of chemical binding forces in the bioremediation process. The chromium biosorption kinetics by the isolate followed a pseudo second order reaction. The FTIR spectral studies revealed that carboxyl, hydroxyl, amino and phosphate groups were involved in the biosorption process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies on the bacterial cells interacted with Cr(VI) confirmed the presence of both Cr(VI) and Cr(III) on the cell surface. The electrokinetic studies revealed that the surface potential of the bacterial cells were less electronegative subsequent to interaction with Cr(VI), compared to the cells alone, which further testified to the binding of positively charged Cr(III) ions, formed by bioreduction of Cr(VI), to the bacterial cell surface. A marginal shift in the iso-electric point obtained for the bacterial cells interacted with Cr(VI), corroborated the involvement of chemical binding forces in the bioremediation process.
