In early 2007, it became apparent that with changing concentrate feeds, the magnesium (Mg) load projected for CEZinc starting in 2009 and beyond would quadruple and overwhelm the current Mg process bleed capacity. A project was started, following design for six sigma (DFSS) standards, to select both the optimal process and to evaluate its target capacity for the Mg bleed circuit. The economic and process risks of under or over-designing while Mg reduction efforts were underway at the mines also needed to be evaluated. This paper describes the project methodology, the impact on the plant, and some potential optimizations for CEZinc's basic zinc sulphate (BZS) Mg bleed process.

When producing high grade mattes in smelter plants, copper losses in the slag are inevitable. Hence, the recovery of copper from slag has been the focus of many research projects, copper flotation being a widely used process. In the Khatoonabad converter, 200 t/d of slag are presently produced with a grade of 2.3% Cu. Assuming a 85% recovery by flotation, about 3.9 t/d copper could be produced, which is of prime importance economically. In the present work, a sample of this slag was crushed and ground in the laboratory to liberate the copper-bearing minerals. Following mineralogical studies, optimum laboratory flotation parameters were obtained, resulting in 90.27 % recovery and 9.42% of copper grade for the rougher stage. At pilot scale, a pulp of 28% solids was floated at ph 10.5 using 40 git of Z6, 25 git of R407 and 20 git of MIBC and A65. A recovery of 83.52% was obtained for a concentrate grade of 28.36% Cu. In the rougher cells, the feed consisted of particles 94% finer than 74 microns whereas in the cleaning stage, particles were 95% finer than 44 microns. Based on the obtained results, the Sarcheshmeh Khatoonabad converter slag is presently being fed to the Chargonbad flotation plant, where a concentrate of 32% copper at 86% recovery is being produced.

BauxsolTM, prepared by treating bauxite refinery residues with Mg2+ and Ca2+, has an excellent ability to remove arsenic from acidic waters. The addition of BauxsolTM to sulphidic waste rock at the Gilt Edge Mine, South Dakota, reduced As concentrations in leachate water from 35 mg/L to < 0.005 mg/L; the concentrations have remained below 0.005 mg/L for the five years since the treatment was initiated. However, ordinary BauxsolTM does not effectively remove As from near-neutral water and it needs to be acid-treated or blended with small amounts of reagents, such as jarosite or ferrous sulphate, to increase the proportion of positively charged binding sites on the particles. The use of a jarosite/BauxsolTM blend can effectively treat ponded water, and As(V) concentrations can easily be reduced from over 1 mg/L to < 0.001 mg/L; As(III) has to be oxidised to As(V) for effective removal. Metal contaminants in the jarosite are trapped by the BauxsolTM and only very small amounts of the As, or other elements bound during treatment, are liberated using a TCLP leaching test. The exhausted treatment reagents meet the criteria for classification as an inert solid and do not need to be disposed of in a secure repository.

In 1954, Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited began the program of deepening the Falconbridge mine workings for 2,000 feet below the bottom, or 4025, level in order to provide twelve new levels for production. Involved in this program were a production-sized internal shaft, .crushing, pumping and hoisting installations, the integration of the new shaft operations with those of existing shafts, and considerations of ventilation requirements and ground support at depth. This paper describes the major items of equipment, and the depth development of No. 9 shaft as a whole, and also emphasize the planning phases of the program. The factors involved and reasons for the equipment and layouts chosen are given. Introduction and History THIS paper describes the planning and development of that portion of the Falconbridge mine between the 4025 and 6050 mining levels. This mine, the oldest of several being operated by Falcon-bridge Nickel Mines Limited in the Sudbury district, has been a continuous producer for over thirty years.

Discrete Element Method simulation of charge motion in ball, SAG and autogenous mills has become a standard for design of mill internals, power draft evaluation, etc. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional codes are being used. The two-dimensional code dominates the user market since the code completes a simulation in one or two hours. On the other hand, three-dimensional codes have been in the domain of specialists who can handle the complexity of the code and have access to parallel computing hardware. For the first time, this barrier is overcome via computing with graphic processing units (GPU). Commodity graphics cards now allow parallel computation with hundreds of processors. It is shown that the computational time has been reduced by a factor of fifty using GPU computing. Hence, SAG charge simulation results in three dimensions are achievable in a few hours using affordable desktop machines. The GPU computing shown here enables the three dimensional simulation into a manageable daily task for mill designers and researchers. On the technical side, the simulations can be elevated to a higher level of complexity to simulate breakage and transport. First, the speedup factor of fifty is established for the Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 graphics card. Next, four simulation tasks, consisting of AG, SAG and ball mills are reported. The simulation of AG and SAG mills are completed in less than 8 hours. The ball mill simulation with 1.25 million spheres is completed in 27 hours. In the near future, as the graphic card hardware advances the compute time can be halved.

"The treatment of nickel-copper concentrate in the new smelter at Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited, Falconbridge, Ontario, is described. The concentrate in a slurry form is partially roasted in a fluid-bed roaster and the calcine is smelted in an electric furnace. The roaster gases are treated in an acid plant. IntroductionSmelting began at Falconbridge in 1930 with the first blast furnace treating high-grade ore containing 2-3% nickel. In 1933, the Falconbridge concentrator was built and started producing a bulk sulphide concentrate containing 4% nickel. A sinter plant was built to agglomerate and partially roast this concentrate. The sinter was smelted in blast furnaces along with high. grade magnetic ore. Matte from the furnaces was treated in Pierce-Smith converters to produce shipping matte which was refined at the company&apos;s plant in Norway."

"The Lonmin Base Metal Refinery treats converter matte from the Lonmin Smelter to produce nickel sulphate crystals, copper cathode as well as a concentrate containing the platinum group (PGM) metals. The original process employed a Sherritt design and utilizes atmospheric and pressure leaches for the dissolution of base metals. This paper describes the original flow sheet and the improvements made to enhance PGM recoveries, product quality and to increase capacity. Changes include the introduction of flash recycle cooling on the autoclave, batch leaches to improve the quality of the PGM concentrate and the implementation of solid-liquid separation with centrifuges. INTRODUCTIONThe Lonmin Base Metal Refinery (BMR) is about 100 km north-west of Johannesburg and treats converter matte from the Lonmin Smelter to produce nickel sulphate crystals, copper cathode and a concentrate containing the PGMs. The plant was commissioned in 1985 based on a Sherritt design to treat 12 tonnes converter matte per day. The original flow sheet consists of a milling circuit, an atmospheric leach and a pressure leach to produce a PGM concentrate which is despatched by helicopter to the Lonmin Platinum refinery in Brakpan, about 40 km east of Johannesburg. The liquor from the atmospheric leach is treated by crystallization to produce a nickel sulphate hexa-hydrate crystal. The leach liquor from the pressure leach is treated by a selenium removal step followed by electro-winning to produce copper cathode. The spent solution from the copper electro-winning is recycled to both the atmospheric and pressure leach steps to provide sulphuric acid for the leaching reactions.Modifications were made to the original circuit to increase the plant capacity, to improve the PGM recoveries and to improve the quality of the PGM concentrate. Capacity increases included all the unit operations, new mill, new first stage, additional autoclaves, additional nickel sulphate crystallizers, new copper electro-winning and new batch leach reactors for upgrading the PGM concentrate. The current circuit is described in this paper and not the detailed history of each plant change."

The corrosion behaviour of Al-B4C metal matrix composites immersed in 2500 ppm boron-containing H3B03, 0.5 M K2SO4, and 3.5% NaC1 solutions was investigated. Effects of B4C particle volume fraction on the corrosion behaviour of composites were studied using potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to study the surface morphology of the material before and after corrosion. Results show that all materials investigated are more corrosion resistant in 2500 ppm boron-containing H3B03 than in other solutions. No appreciable corrosion was observed in boric acid and sulfate solutions in contrast to an obvious pitting in NaC1 solution for both base alloy and composites. The preferential pitting sites are the interfaces of Al/Fe intermetallics for the base alloy, and the A1/B4C interfaces for the composites. Increasing the volume fraction of B4C particles in the composite decreases its corrosion resistance of Al-B4C composites.

DURING and after 1949, various groups of British mining engineers came to the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, at Sydney, N .S., to see at first hand the Dosco MINER ( 1). These visits culminated in 1952 with the ordering of four Dosco Miners by the (British) National Coal Board on an experimental basis through their Experimental Expenditure Funds. Others are now on order. The first machine was delivered in February, 1953, and, after slight alterations to suit the different power supply, the machine was made ready to work. Due mainly to the size of the machine, new rules and regulations governing its operation had to be put into effect and it was not until April, 1954, that the machine was put underground. It started to produce in June of that year. The three others were delivered early in 1955. The authors were sent to England by the Dominion Coal Company to install and demonstrate these machines and to work with the Coal Board engineers to- further interest in the machines in the British coal fields .

Construction and mining worksites pose unique challenges to workers and equipment operators due to their dynamic and unstructured nature. Narrow haul roads, crowded work spaces and presence of workers and equipment in close proximity, combined with large blind spots and overall poor visibility afforded to operators lead to collisions and run-over-type accidents between equipment, workers, and other entities that may be present on the jobsite. Operations that involve machine-infrastructure interaction, particularly in the case of concealed infrastructure such as excavation and drilling lead to unintended strikes between the equipment?s end-effect or and the infrastructure. Such accident-prone scenarios can be avoided by providing operators with real-time feedback and warnings using 3D visualization and proximity monitoring of the entities present in the equipment?s vicinity. Thus the jobsite in the real world is abstracted and represented in a 3D virtual world. However, this requires the ability to create a seamless link between real-world sensors present on the equipment and/or the jobsite and the virtual environment. This paper describes a non-restrictive acquisition allocation framework that allows position and orientation sensor streams from construction and mining job sites to be used for updating 3D virtual scenes in real-time for providing vital collision avoidance warnings to equipment operators.

The Cassiar orebody is located in a sill-like serpentinite body intrusive into the Devonian-Mississippian sedimentary rocks of northern British Columbia. Subsequent intrusion of the Cassiar batholith formed the McDame synclinorium and produced chrysotile asbestos. Present information indicates an orebody of approximately 16,277,000 tons amenable to open-pit mining, but continued diamond drilling will be needed to accurately define total tonnage and grade. A program has been developed at the mine to provide the required information on a daily basis, and work is continuing on more effective dollar-value prediction methods.

A flowsheet has been developed to treat the flotation tailings from a copper mine in Mexico to recover gold and silver by cyanidation and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). The plant will treat ~15,000 t/day of a 60:40 blend of current flotation tailings and the mine’s historic tailings. The tailings also contain a significant amount of cyanide-soluble copper, and the economic viability of the project is strengthened by recovering most of the copper and cyanide associated with this process. The solution and solid phases in the CIP tailings will be separated in a counter current decantation (CCD) circuit and the CCD solution overflow will be treated by a SART Process. Copper precipitates as a salable copper sulphide product in the SART Process and the cyanide that is associated with the copper complex is regenerated as free cyanide. After SART, a portion of the SART product solution will be recycled to leach to reuse the free cyanide, while the remaining solution will be used as wash water in the CCD circuit. Incorporation of the SART Process in the flowsheet allows the CIP circuit to be operated aggressively as a gold plant, which means most of the silver in solution passes through CIP to SART. Silver co-precipitates with copper in SART and is recovered very efficiently with the copper sulphide by-product. Incorporation of SART also allows the leach and CIP circuits to be operated with relatively high levels of free cyanide, which enhances silver leach kinetics and helps keep copper from loading onto the carbon in CIP. The flowsheet was developed in the laboratory and successfully demonstrated in a fully-integrated pilot plant in 2018.

ABSTRACT Reconnaissance exploration in the Kuene region Namibia has included geological mapping, soil and stream sediment geochemistry, and ground geophysical methods. Copper mineralization occurs within a well-defined belt with north-northwest to south-southeast trend, parallel to the regional strike of the sedimentary rocks. The occurrences vary in size but are generally stratabound. The mineralization is centred on the transition from calcareous shale and interbedded limestone, through carbonate rocks, to quartzite. Geochemical anomalies have been identified correlating to induced polarization (IP) and magnetic anomalies. The anomalies identify one potential metallogenic zone more than 17 km in strike length.

"Introduction Byron Creek Collieries Limited Corbin mine is located in southeastern British Columbia approximately 180 air kilometres southwest of Calgary (Fig. I), twenty four kilometres south of Highway No. 3 via a newly constructed provincial road (Fig. 2). The development of the area began July 30, 1905, when D.C. Corbin, a prominent businessman from the northwestern U.S., and his associate E.J. Roberts first visited the site of Coal Mountain on horseback. Coal was in great demand by railways and other industrial users, so the Corbin Coal and Coke Co., after acquiring 6,000 hectares of land in the area, began to develop a mine. Mr. Roberts was responsible for the construction of the 22-kilometre rail spur, the Eastern British Columbia Railway, which joined the mine to the CPR main line at the McGillivray Loop. Rail access to the mine and its developing community, Corbin, B.C., was completed in September 1908, the same year that the first underground mine began production. The Corbin Coal and Coke Co. operated six mines on Coal Mountain (Fig. 3) and production from 1908 to 1930 inclusive totalled 2,120,800 tonnes. SULPHUR, like the minerals of coal, iron and petroleum, is one of the essential materials in our modern expanding industrial civilization. Before discussing the salient features of the production of sulphur from the Canadian sour gas, it seems appropriate to outline the historical past and probable future utilization of sulphur. The ancient Greek writer Homer spoke of its "pest-averting sulphur" and the "divine purifying fumigation". Ancient alchemists found sulphur to be a fascinating and baffling material. The discovery of gun powder in the year of 1250, and its application to the art of war a, century later, made sulphur an important commodity in the progress of mankind. The initial manufacture of sulphuric acid in the year of 1736 by the Englishman Joshua Ward, established the basis of a chemical industry that today utilizes 80 per cent of the consumption of elemental sulphur. Commercial production of the chemical soda ash ( N a2C03) discovered in 1787 by the famous Leblanc Process, in-creased international demand for the element sulphur and marks the birthday of the Sicilian sulphur industry.

The Star Lake property, located 115 km northeast of La Ronge, Saskatchewan is underlain by metamorphosed andesitic tuffs and flows which have been intruded by the dioritic to granitic Star Lake Pluton. Gold mineralization on the Star Lake property was first discovered at Ru h Lake by E. Beveridge in 1959 and by M. and E. Hird in 1961. In 1960 E. Partridge discovered Kahn 18 and Kahn 28. In 1982 the SMDC-Starrex joint venture completed geophysical and geochemical urveys including magnetics, VLF, IP/Resistivity, vegetation, bulk till and oil sampling, followed by drill testing of pecific targets. To date the most ignificant depo it is the 21 Zone which contain drill indicated reserves of 230,000 tons grading 0.5 oz/ton Au . The 21 Zone con ists of quartz with 5-10% (locally > 30%) drusy pyrite, minor chalcopyrite and trace amounts of scheelite, chalcocite and arsenopyrite. The 21 Zone is enclosed by a 25-50 m wide band of mylonitized monzonite. The mylonite occurs in the central portion of a 300 m wide northeasterly trending zone of brittle deformation .

The development of the Granduc mine presents a number of problems which are peculiar to its location and surrounding terrain. Because the development tunnels portal onto an area which is covered by an extensive glacier, and the mountain-side is subjected to dangerous snow slides, it was decided to construct an underground powerhouse to supply the necessary electric power and compressed air. This paper deals with the special problems inherent in the design and -construction of an underground plant. It involves the installation of diesel-electric generating equipment having an aggregate capacity of 1,050 kw.,and of air compressors with a total capacity of 2,400 cfm. Items dis-cussed include the selection of equipment to meet site conditions, the ventilation and cooling of the underground room, and the protection of personnel and equipment from explosions and fire. A short discussion on the automatic supervisory and alarm installation is also included. THE Granduc mine is located 135 miles north of Prince Rupert and 25 miles north of Stew-art. The Island of Ceylon, which is one of the most beautiful possessions of the British Empire, has been an abode of man from the very earliest times. The Veddhas, a wild tribe of some 4500 people still living in the fastnesses of the jungle in east central portion of the island, are believed to represent a remnant of the oldest inhabitants of which we have any actual knowledge, but in the caves in which they live there are found the stone axes and other implements of Palaeolithic people who represent the first race of men who inhabited our globe, and of whom they may be, for all that is known, the direct descendants. About the fifth century before Christ there came the Aryan invaders, apparently from the north of India, who drove the Veddhas into the remote fastnesses of the jungle and developed the remarkable Singhalese civilization whose high character is demonstrated by the remarkable and very extensive system of irrigation works which they built up, and through which they made the island wonderfully productive. Great cities arose, some of which are believed to have had a population of over a million souls and whose temples and public buildings show that the people were accomplished architects and sculptors.
