"Of the 135 current or past-producing 'gold-only' mines in the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield which have produced more than 100,000 tons of ore, the 33 mines which have produced one million ounces or more of gold have accounted for over 84o/o of the total production of 137 million ounces. The published literature on these 33 deposits was reviewed in order to determine the geological setting of the mineralization on a regional (mining camp) and local (mine) scale. The dominant rock types underlying the mining camps are mafic, variolitic, tholeiitic volcanic rocks with a significant ultramafic (komatiitic) component, and clastic and/ or exhalative sedimentary rocks. Felsic volcanic rocks are generally subordinate. Most mining camps are located at or near the top of the mafic-ultramafic sequence, and generally there is a major sedimentary-volcanic contact present which may be 1) a stratigraphic superposition of volcanic and sedimentary units, 2) a rapid, along-strike gradation from dominantly volcanic to dominantly sedimentary units due to facies change, or to the formation of structurally controlled sedimentary basins during volcanism, or 3) frequently (at 40o/o of the camps) a juxtaposition of sedimentary and volcanic sequences across a major fault zone or 'break', which in many instances may represent a reactivated, syn-volcanic basin-margin fault.In contrast to the regional setting, on a local or mine scale over 90o/o of the 33 mines contain felsic intrusions and/ or extrusions within mine workings. The felsic rocks may be quartzbearing (commonly quartz-feldspar porphyries) or dominantly quartz-free (commonly feldspar porphyry syenites or monzonites), and appear to have been emplaced in two different depth-zone environments: an epizonal intrusive environment, and a volcanic vent environment. Although the distinction between epizonal intrusive and volcanic intrusive-extrusive rocks is uncertain in many deposits, the two are tentatively separated on the basis of the grain size of the rock matrix (medium to coarse grained vs aphanitic to fine grained), homogeneity (multi-phased and/ or compositionally zoned vs compositionally homogeneous), and the shape and relationship to stratigraphy of the igneous body (circular or oval in cross section, and cutting the stratigraphy at a low angle vs lenticular and either stratiform or cutting the stratigraphy at a high angle). In addition, felsic intrusions of the volcanic environment commonly grade into tuffs or breccias of extrusive origin, whereas epizonal intrusions do not.Stratiform ore zones of possible exhalative sedimentary origin appear to be confined to deposits in which volcanic felsic rocks are present, and are absent from deposits in which only epizonal felsic intrusions are present. Pervasive carbonate- rich alteration, commonly in roughly stratabound zones of regional extent, and carbonate-rich chemical sedimentary rocks are present in over three-quarters of the deposits containing quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks, but are much less common in deposits with quartz-free felsic volcanic rocks. The host sequences of epizonal felsic intrusions which are quartzfree are more commonly sedimentary than those of quartz-bearing epizonal felsic intrusions.Quartz, carbonate minerals, arsenopyrite, scheelite, tourmaline and Cr-muscovite ('juchsite') are the most common mineralogical associates of gold. Arsenopyrite is essentially restricted to the volcanic environment, occurring in about twothirds of the deposits with quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks and less than half of the deposits with quartz-free volcanic rocks. Tourmaline, on the other hand, is almost ubiquitous in deposits associated with epizonal intrusions and also occurs in about two-thirds of the deposits associated with quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks, but in only one of the eight deposits associated with quartz-free felsic volcanic rocks. "IntroductionBACK IN THE nineteen-thirties, when Eldorado was a private company and was preparing to become Canada's first radium producer, the Mines Branch in Ottawa did much work on the development of chemical processes for the Port Hope refinery (1).In 1945, after the Canadian Government had taken over Eldorado for •atomic energy reasons, the Mines Branch was called upon again, this time to help out by looking into ways and means of improving ore treatment methods for the mine at Great Bear Lake. A group of technical men was assembled to devote full attention to this work, which was known as the Eldorado Project.Three years later, in 1948, the Government decided to reopen the development and operation of uranium properties to private enterprise.Since it is a function of the Mines Branch to assisit private development of Canadian mineral resources, this new uranium policy made it important for the Branch to be in a position where it could provide up-to-date services, technical assistance, and information relating to treatment of radioactive ores, mineralogy of radioactive ores, and assay methods for radioactive ores.At the same time, .because of the demand for increased uranium production, lower grade ores had definitely come into the picture, ores that might be of decidedly lower grade than, say, Eldorado pitchblende, and of entirely different nature."

For engineering applications, magnesium is usually alloyed with one or more elements which include aluminium, manganese, rare earth metals, lithium, zinc, and zirconium. Under normal environmental conditions, the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys is comparable or better than that of mild steel. The oxide film thickness on pure magnesium after exposure for only ?10 seconds at ambient temperature is 2.2 ± 0.3 nm. Exposure to humid air or to water leads to the formation of a thick hydrated amorphous film that has an oxidation rate less than 0.01 pm/ y. E-pH diagram and high temperature corrosion are discussed. The pH values between 8.5 and 11.5 correspond to a relatively protective oxide or hydroxide film that is more stable at higher pH. Structural applications of magnesium alloys are limited by creep strength rather than by oxidation. Active and active-passive behaviours of magnesium alloys are discussed. The pilling Bedworth Ratio values of oxide and hydroxide are 0.79 and 1.77 respectively and so the formation of Mg(OH)2 inside the oxide film could lead to the development of cracks. Microbiologically influenced corrosion and rational biodegradation of magnesium alloys are discussed because of their interest for medical care.

"There are many tests that can be used to characterize and classify coals, and describe their quality. One of the easier tests, and most versatile in its application, is petrography. Rank and coal type are precisely defined by petrographic evaluation, and in this paper they are compared with other definitions of rank and coal type. Brief descriptions are given of the various rank tests, and of rheological and coking tests used to describe coking-coal quality in Canada. Similarly, tests used to evaluate thermal coal quality are discussed. Finally, the use of these tests as parameters to classify Canadian coals is examined with reference to four coal classifications.Introduction Among all coals there are two independent variables that are required to evaluate coal quality. These are, coal rank and coal type (or composition), and although coal petrography can be used to precisely define them, other methods are often used to provide values that are, in fact, functions of rank and coal type. For example, volatile matter yield is used as a proxy for rank, and free swelling index is used as a proxy for coal type in the International Classification of Hard Coals by type. Currently, there are a number of methods in use in Canada to define rank. The approach taken here, (obviously the author's bias), is that Romax, the mean maximum reflectance of vitrinite, is both a quick and an accurate measure of rank. It is logical to compare the other techniques employed in the measurement of rank to this favoured method. Coal type is, in theory at least, simply a quantitative measure of the various varieties of coal. In practice, the microscopic entities are assigned to a Reactive or Inert category, and at that point objectivity fades from petrography. Despite this somewhat subjective approach, petrographic composition of coals remains an independent variable of such.importance that its place in the evaluation of coal is essential. In this paper, a variety of me.thods that are used to assess rank and coal type are reviewed and compared; the influence of these variables over other parameters that are used to determine the quality of metallurgical and thermal coals is examined, and their usefulness in coal classifications is discussed."

In these days, however, such a definition is not detailed enough.The modern science of metallurgy is based on two fundamental sciences, physics .and chemistry, and is sub-divided into two major fields: Process Metallurgy and Physical Metallurgy. These fields of metallurgy are now so comprehensive and involved that even the graduate metallurgist has to specialize in one or the other.In recent years, the relatively new science or technology of non• destructive testing has also entered the industrial scene, with tremendous impact and ramifications. So much so that, certainly, no .discussion on metallurgy can be complete without including some reference to it.Obviously, one paper cannot hope to cover in detail the relationship of the whole science of metallurgy to the mining industry. Consequently, only a very brief reference will be made to the field of Process Metallurgy, our major concern being with Physical Metallurgy and Non-Destructive Testing."

THERE is at the present time a revived interest in amalgamation, due to the number of mines starting up, usually on high-grade ore, and utilizing this relatively cheap and convenient means of recovering gold, more especially in their initial stages of production. The marked increased use of the amalgamation process has revealed a dearth of amalgamators and there is no doubt the art of amalgamation has stood still for a generation or two and is not readily applicable to the modern practice of milling gold ores. Mill operators of long experience are learning the art for the first time and are giving it intelligent study, and considerable testing and research work is now being undertaken Most millmen consider amalgamation a simple process, and so it is when we have a clean ore with coarse gold, specially when stamps are used for crushing. In treating Nova Scotia ores by stamps and amalgamation, recoveries of 95 to 97 per cent are common and easily obtained. So-called 'under-water feed' is almost universally used in Nova Scotia and is quite beneficial. The water is supplied through jets between the dies and below the die surface and maintains this space as a live trap which catches the gold particles before they are overground and spoilt for amalgamation. With this method, the portion of gold recovered in the battery is higher than usual and often amounts to 80 per cent of the total gold in the ore, the remaining 20 per cent being caught on the plate. As a continuous amalgamator, the simple plate cannot be excelled. Some of the modern devices having moving or covered and not very accessible plates, which cannot be readily inspected and dressed to keep them in condition, do not give the best results in service. An exception might be drawn in the case of amalgamation of very heavy ore or concentrate which would bank up unless the plate is carried at such a steep inclination as to weep mercury. Difficulties in stamp-mill amalgamation are encountered when acid water is used or when grease is present. Also, certain sulphides and graphitic and talcose ores give trouble, resulting in poor gold recovery and high mer-cury loss. The older literature on gold milling deals with the common troubles of this type and the old-time amalgamator was well able to take care of day-by-day difficulties. When the difficulties were unsurmountable, the ore was classed as 'refractory' and other processes were used.

"IntroductionTHE PROCEDURE and technique for drilling holes has probably undergone as great a change during the past ten years as any one of the other operations conducted in hard-rock mining. During this period, we have seen a change from the heavy leyners and drifters to the light jackleg type of drill machine; from steels that were forged and hardened on the bit end to the inserted •carbide-tipped rod, from the necessity of providing special bit-end fabrication and beat treatment of shank steels to the simple grinding or turning of a plain section on a shank with no heat treatment required for bit attachment.When the steel maker was first called upon to manufacture a hollow drill rod, it was required that the steel must not only have sufficient strength and fatigue resistance to cope with the stresses of service, but also must be capable of being heat treated on the bit end to a high hardness for resistance to wear and abrasion . Little was known at that time about alloy steels and the beneficial effects to be gained from additions of chromium, nickel , and molybdenum. So it was that the plain 0.80 per cent carbon analysis was selected, since it had already proven to be a suitable grade for chisels, hammers, and other such shock tools. This grade has long endured the test of time and is still used in considerable tonnage today, particularly by the construction industry.As the metallurgist learned more about the influence of alloying elements, a new hollow drill analysis was placed on the market in the early 'thirties'."

"There is a dire need of a technology which can break the mineral interfaces to enhance liberation with minimum energy consumption in mineral beneficiation processes. Understanding of mineral crystal system and interfaces is essential to develop such methodology. So, this study is carried out to find out the role of mineral crystallography in milling and liberation. Data related of mineral crystallography, Vickers Hardness Number, Bond Work Index and beneficiation processes were collected from literature and detailed statistical analysis has been carried out to establish a correlation among these parameters. It was found that atomic weight and cell parameters shown statistically significant relationship with Vickers Hardness Number of minerals, which controls the milling characteristics of ores. Liberation characteristics of five different kinds of ores were analyzed considering the types of interfaces between valuable and gangue minerals. It was found that phase interfaces play vita role in liberation and coarser liberation can be achieved in the minerals of incoherent crystal systems like manganese and zinc ores. Study of this subject can help us to understand the effect of stress wave propagation in solids and its effect on crystal interfaces. It can also help us to design a technology of future to break the mineral interfaces.INTRODUCTIONCommunition is energy intensive mineral processing operation and consumes up to 2% of the total electric power generated in the world. Energy consumption due to comminution is increasing every year as there is growing needs to exploit lower grade ore bodies and process rejects (Blazy et al., 1994; DOE, 2005). Low grade ores require crushing and grinding to liberate the valuable minerals which are further separated from gangues by various beneficiation methods like gravity separation, floatation, leaching etc. Currently, comminution methods are selected based on the reduction ratio and energy consumption but effect of grinding methods on subsequent processing methods specially on liberation also need to be studied to optimize the entire beneficiation process. Most of the attempts made in past to minimize the energy consumption in milling to enhance the mineral liberation were focused on compression mechanism, chemical additives, thermal treatment, microwave treatment and electric disintegration (Kilpelm and Austin, 1982; Norgate and Weller et al, 1994; Bearman et al., 1997; Kumar et al., 2010; Wang el al., 2011; Singh et al., 2012). But the role of mineral crystallography on milling and liberation behavior of minerals not fully explored yet."

For more than 20 years the author had the privilege of working closely on a number of R&D projects with Lucy Rosato and her team at CEZinc. Several of these projects were driven from the sustainability agenda that Lucy Rosato championed as an innovation leader that supported research collaborations. Highlights from this highly rewarding collaboration are to be presented in this paper. In particular we will deal with the following works-topics: (a) iron control via solvent extraction as alternative to jarosite precipitation; (b) production of high-density gypsum by controlled neutralization of simulated zinc plant process/waste waters; (c) selenium removal from weak acid solutions; (d) electrolyte purification by cementation; and (e) manganese control by oxidative precipitation with SO2/O2.

Several low-temperature, dry chlorination processes for the treatment of sulphide minerals are reviewed, in a chronological order. These processes include the following: the Swinburne-Ashcroft, Baker-Burwell, Maim, Comstock-Wescott (Aldermac) and the Mitterburg Mining Process. Dry chlorination investigations at the Canadian Mines Branch (now CANMET) and the U.S. Bureau of Mines are discussed, as is a proposed process by the South Africa National Institute for Metallurgy. The techniques used in the process are discussed, as are the shortcomings, problems and failures of the methods.

"Madawaska Mines Limited, incorporated in 1975 is the successor to Faraday Uranium Mines Limited. The history of the latter's mine development and corporate changes are outlined. This paper describes the geology of the Bancroft area and the rock types found in the mine, particularly the pegmatite which is the host rock for the uranium. The structure, mineralogy and distribution of the ore shoots are described with the method of grade control and mine development. The paper concludes with a summary of the production and mineral reserves.Location, Access, and PropertyMadawaska Mines Limited is located in Faraday Township, Hastings County, Ontario. The mine is in the N.T.S. quadrant 31 F/ 4, Bancroft sheet and near 46 degrees 01 minute latitude, 77 degrees 46 minutes longitude. The mine is one-half mile north of Highway 28, five miles (8 km) west of Bancroft, and is accessible by various highways from Toronto, Ottawa, Peterborough, and Belleville. (Fig. 1). A landing strip for small aircraft is located at the northwestern edge of Bancroft. Bancroft is a modern community with a population of 2,400. The company has the mineral rights to 2982 acres (1207 hectares) surrounding the mine workings and plant which are situated in the north parts of Lots 16 and 17, Concession XI, Faraday Township."

The rock quality designation (RQD) was initially introduced by Deere (1963) for civil engineering. But, its application has been largely extended to rock mechanics and has become a fundamental parameter in geotechnical engineering (e.g., Hoek & Brown 1980; Milne et al. 1998). The success of this definition is due, in great part, to its simplicity. However, this index includes a number of limitations. Among these limitations, a critical one is associated with the arbitrarily selected threshold value (e.g., Priest & Hudson 1976). Consequently, the RQD value would vary with different threshold length for the same core. Also, using the customarily and universally adopted but very arbitrarily selected threshold value of 10 cm (for NX cores) in the assessment of RQD, the RQD values usually tend to be either high or low in most rock engineering. Some intermediate values (50%) are less frequently encountered (Harrison 1999). The original definition of RQD does not well represent the actual quality of rock masses. In this paper, an improved definition of rock quality designation (RQDc) is given.

Introduction The Author As the pail of smoke and wartime destruction gradually rises from the surface of the earth, from all countries, statesmen assemble to discuss and prepare pacts and treaties which are designed to, once more, bring people of all nations to understand each other and live in harmony. Scientists and engineers throughout the world are also undergoing a drastic reconversion in their ideas and objectives. No longer do they think only in terms of destruction and twist their brains to develop more devastating weapons or to surpass production records of war machinery. They have turned their eyes and ambitions to more pleasant tasks and are taking stock of wartime developments in materials, fabricating procedures, and equipment, many of which had been carefully shrouded with a veil of secrecy, and are applying their new knowledge to the fabrication or improvement of the tools of peace. The next few years will see the gradual elimination of scores of substitutes and makeshifts, expedients which the constantly changing law of supply and demand' under wartime stress necessitated. The universal search for satisfactory substitutes, however, has resulted in a general awakening of plant engineers to the possibilities of materials with which they were relatively inexperienced, with the result that, in many instances, what was considered a substitution at the outset turned out to be more satisfactory than the original material, and, in reality, can be considered a worthwhile development. Not only have materials been explored, but existing fabricating processes have been reviewed, and others, built around the properties and characteristics of new materials, created.

"Ironstone Resources Ltd. is developing the Clear Hills oolitic iron ore deposit in northwest Alberta, Canada. Sources of oolitic iron ore worldwide are abundant and ubiquitous, but there is currently no commercial technology to extract iron from oolitic iron ores. Mineral processing of the ore to generate a commercial iron ore concentrate is very challenging due to the nature of these ores. Accordingly, Hatch and Ironstone are developing a new pyrometallurgical process (Hatch Ironstone Chloride Segregation) to produce metallic iron from high silica and high phosphorus oolitic iron ores. Following the chloride segregation process, the treated ore is subjected to fine grinding. The iron is then separated by magnetic separation. The iron grade and phosphorus content of the final product shows a strong dependence on the separation methodology and the grind size. The pyrometallurgical process has been developed and tested at a lab-scale pilot plant. The commercialization of this technology could provide an opportunity for the development of a new alternate iron making technology. This paper presents the results of test work done on the raw iron ore to create a concentrate and also on the products of the pyrometallurgical process for the production of a high grade 90% metallic iron product.INTRODUCTION Oolite is a sedimentary rock formed from ooids – spherical particles with concentric layers. There are a number of large oolitic iron deposits where the mineralogical form features a low iron content and high concentration of impurities making them presently impossible to exploit on either a technical or economic basis. The fifteen largest oolitic iron ore deposits in the world are estimated to contain approximately 337 billion tonnes of iron ore, which would be a significant source of supply for worldwide steel production. A viable process that can economically recover iron from these oolitic iron ore deposits could become an important new technology to meet future demand in the steel industry. Hatch and Ironstone have demonstrated that oolitic iron ores can be exploited to produce direct reduced iron (DRI). Direct reduction ironmaking is a method for producing solid metallic iron using different techniques compared to the blast furnace process, which is the more conventional ironmaking route. The demand for the construction of direct reduction ironmaking plants has increased in response to the increasing demand for crude steel. It is viewed as a method of providing low-residual iron sources to scrap-based steelmaking in electric arc furnaces."

"IntroductionTITANIUM is probably the most widely publicized metal today. Much has been written, both in the lay press and the technical press, about its properties and potentialities. In view of the fact that Canada possesses large quantities of titanium-bearing ore, and could conceivably become a major producer of metallic titanium, it was felt that a paper dealing mainly with the physical metallurgy of titanium would be of interest to this Institute. This paper is concerned chiefly with the useful properties of titanium and its alloys and the fundamentals governing the modification of its properties by alloying.Physical Properties of TitaniumTitanium belongs to a family of metals that have been termed 'gas sensitive' (I), because their mechanical properties are altered by certain gases which they readily absorb and retain. Other metals of this group are zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, columbium, tantalum, and chromium. Titanium has a strong affinity for oxygen and nitrogen and once it has absorbed these gases they cannot be removed either by melting in vacuum or by any degassing agent. These gases, when present in excess of about half a per cent oxygen plus nitrogen, render the metal brittle and useless as a structural material.Some of the typical physical properties of titanium are listed in Table I along with those of common structural metals for comparison."

"Cobalt based super alloy stellite 6 was weld cladded on AISI 304 L stainless steel using SMAW process in order to improve the wear resistance for tyre crusher blades. Microstructure characterization and micro hardness testing was performed on stellite 6 cladding. The suitable parameters viz. 80 Amp current with arc weaving technique was selected by performing bead on plate experiment were further used for depositing multipass multilayer cladding to achieve full filler chemistry at the top surface. Further GTAW process was used for re-melting the top surface of the cladding. Comparative evaluation of the claddings showed that TIG re-melting resulted in increased microhardness and wear resistance in comparison to as cladded specimens even with lesser deposition of material. It was observed that TIG re-melting improved the hardness from 603 HV0.5 kg to 712 HV0.5 kg. Micro structures of stellite 6 contained cobalt solid solution matrix along with inter dendrite chromium carbides which resulted in the increased micro hardness values. Pin on disc abrasion tests were carried out at room temperature and the worn out surfaces were characterized using SEM and EDS.INTRODUCTIONThe crusher blades are used in many industries for crushing various types of material and its wider applications in tyre rubber crushing mills, metal-powder crushers industries etc. Most of the crusher blades are damaged by the wear and impact loading conditions. It is because of metal to metal abrasion and the temperature also plays a vital role in blunting the cutting edges of these blades. The wear is the major cause which leads to loss of material and thus the productivity that can never be recovered (Kotechi et al., 1992). The wear can be reduced by coating of various super alloys which could reduce the behavior of metal degradation even in aggressive environments. Cladding of cheaper low alloyed material with expensive superalloys to enhance the performance of components at low cost has been investigated by many scholars (Deng et al., 2010, Kennametal, 2007, Lolla et al., 2014, Singhet al., 2014, J.N et al., 2003, Ramkumar et al., 2012). Many researchers have reported that cladding is an application of build-up deposits of specialized alloys to resist abrasion, high temperature corrosion and impact loadings. Cladding is used for providing required mechanical strength properties as well as inhibition of oxidation and other corrosive degradation. Coatings are used to protect the heat affected areas like tubes of fluidized bed combustor etc. (Kirchbner et al., 2008, Wang et al., 1994, Hocking et al., 1993, Ananthapadmanabhan et al., 1991, Staia et al., 2001). Coating techniques are widely used for the protection of turbine engine and boiler tubes against high temperature corrosion attack, power generation equipment, chemical process equipment, aircraft engines, pulp and paper processing equipment, bridges, rollers and concrete reinforcements, orthopedics and dental, land-based and marine turbines, ships. Coatings of stellite 6 are widely used in steam turbine blades and boiler tubes for power generation because of an excellent combination of impact, wear and other properties. It can maintain its properties even at high temperature and in harsh environments (Kobayashiet al., 1999, Alam et al., 2009, Munehru et al., 2009). The loading and unloading conditions experienced by the material may induce the surface cracks which lead to its breakage and leaving large pits in the surface (Meng et al., 1995). Many researchers have reported that the properties of cladded layers can be increased by various techniques such as controlling the current variations, dilution, heat input, laser and other re-melting processes, addition of special alloying elements, speed of weldingetc(C.M Anaet al., 2002, Kumaret al., 1999, Luo et al., 2012, et al., Madadi et al., 2011, Shin et al., 2003, Kuzucu et al., 1997, Sudha et al., 2008, Sawant et al., 2017, Houdkova et al., 2016, Ciubo"

The morphology of the anodic films was examined by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the composition was examined by glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES). The adhesive bonding strength and durability in corrosive environment were investigated by using single lap shear test and salt spray corrosion test (SST), respectively. The results showed that the pores structure could significantly influence the adhesive bonding performance. The unsealed sample showed porous structure and provided high bonding strength, however, the durability was poor in corrosive environment. The hot water sealed sample showed fine and loose hydrated alumin a structure on the surface and provided high durability in corrosive environment, but the bonding strength was low. In contrast, the agent sealed sample provided both high bonding strength and durability in corrosive environment.INTRODUCTIONAdhesively bonded aluminum joints by using adhesives have been widely used for the realization of lightweight design in industrial applications like automotive and aerospace industry[1, 2]. Durable bonds which are capable of taking structural loads can be created due to a careful consideration of the way in which the joint is formed, the type of adhesive and the appropriate treatment of the adherend surfaces prior to bonding[3-6]. Experiences demonstrate that the surface treatment is the most critical step which could not be disregarded, since it is essential to achieve long-term service capability [7].In structural applications, a bonded assembly is expected to maintain a significant load and may be combined with exposure to harsh environmental conditions in its service life. For this purpose, the pretreatment for structural bonding of aluminum alloy must provide not only strong tensile strength and durability but also good corrosion resistance. Chromic acid anodizing (CAA) process provides an anodized layer which has good corrosion resistance while also exhibiting useful adhesion characteristics as well as lacquer coating retaining characteristics[8].However, the use of Cr (VI) is unadvised from a health and environmental point of view since it is toxic and carcinogenic, and this process is gradually limited even prohibited. Boeing's phosphoric acid anodizing(PAA) process provides a more open pore structure allowing penetration of high molecular primers/adhesives[8]and PAA process is the most widely used pre-surface treatment suitable for adhesive bonding between aluminum alloy components. Rahimi et al. demonstrated that nanostructure can be produced by PAA process and is affected by the time of pretreatment and anodizing parameters [9]. Xu et al.investigated the influence of surface energy and roughness on adhesive bonding through PAAprocess and provided improved adhesion performance under certain anodizing parameter[10]. However, PAA process is normally not recommended for a major concern of deterioration of the mechanical performance of the joints as a result of exposure to a wet and corrosive environment. Sulfuric acid anodizing(SAA)process, recently, has been widely used for corrosion protection and good base coating for the adhesion of lacquers in aerospace manufacturing[11]. The good performance is explained by properties such as the porous morphology and high adsorptive power of the oxide film, the chemical and electrical inertness of the anodized layer. Moreover, modified sulfuric acid could also used for adhesive bonding. Aluminum extrusions are widely used for automotive crash management systems due to their superior specific energy absorption capabilities, as compared to steel. The Al-Mg-Si alloy series can be readily extruded into complex multi-hollow profiles, as required in crash systems, and can be used to target a range of desired strength levels. This paper focuses on the development of an axial crush test protocol and evaluation of the crush performance of common 6XXX series alloys for a variety of tempers. The observed crush behaviour is then compared to tensile test results.

The basic factors -population growth and industrial development -which will create energy demand are so fundamental to national economies that the ascending energy demand curve will be little affected by short-term factors.Because of the economic and practical advantages of nuclear power and the degree of present acceptance by electric utilities, there is no doubt that uranium will be a principal source of primary energy in industrial countries -and this will happen within a decade. Indeed, during this period it will be the fastest growing source of energy, capturing, for example, more than half of the electric utilities' expansion in the United States by 1980. The ready availability of energy sources from domestic and foreign resources is so essential to industrial nations that the long-range outlook for their adequacy is of prime importance. There has been international concern about the availability of uranium resources at reasonable cost to adequately support and foster the development of the nuclear power industry. Canada, fortunate in having established reserves and a potential in excess of any forseeable domestic demand, can confidently look forward to being a principal supplier to the industry."

Introduction Up to the present, the operation of small mills for the treatment of gold ores has not been favoured in Canada to the extent that it has in other countries. For instance, a list of the operating properties in Southern Rhodesia, published in The Rhodesian Mining Journal of November, 1934, shows for the month of September, 1934, that there were over 500 small mills treating less than 50 tons per day, and the majority of these between 5 and 25 tons. They are operated by individuals, syndicates, and small mining companies. It is presumed that the operations are profitable, although from the published figures of the tonnages treated and the yields, it is difficult for one familiar with Canadian operations to understand how this can be possible, in the majority of cases. Most of these small mills employ stamps with plate amalgamation and with, occasionally, tables to produce a concentrate. Enquiries have been received from many parts of the world respecting milling practice suitable for small gold mines and the type of plant used in Canada. The tenor of these enquiries leaves the impression that the majority of the writers assume that the practice would be similar at all small properties. This, of course, is not the case. Conditions vary widely, and what would be a suitable mill for a typical Nova Scotia ore would not necessarily be wholly adaptable to many ores in Ontario, Quebec, or British Columbia. This paper has been written with the intention of inviting discussion, and it is hoped that, by such discussion, the subject will be more fully dealt with than has been possible in the time at the disposal of the writer. Only more or less standard principles and practices have been dealt with, and, purposely, no reference has been made to plants using mills of the Hadsel, the Nutt, or the Gibson type. As there is available but little reliable information on the costs of installation and operation of small mills, it is also hoped that those contributing to the discussion of milling practices for small mines will be in a position to give these data for the benefit of those contemplating the erection of small plants in Canada. Although it is difficult to generalize, it can be said that there are three types of gold mills commonly used at small mines: (1) Amalgamation and Gravity Concentration; (2) Amalgamation and Flotation; and (3) Cyanidation.
