Past attempts to establish an integrated steel industry on the West Coast of Canada have been unsuccessful for at least three reasons: (a) insufficient reserves of a suit-able iron ore supply; (b) a relatively small local market for iron and steel; and (c) the non-availability of an economical process to produce primary iron on a small scale. Today, the reserves of economically mineable ore deposits are ample to support a steel production of 100,000 to 200,-000 tons per annum. The local market has increased so as to be able to absorb most of this capacity. With-in the next few years, a small integrated steel plant, including the "H-Iron" direct iron ore reduction process for electric furnace charge stock production, will be able to show a profitable operation. "Grande Cache Coal (GCC), an investor-owned Alberta company, is in the final stages of the regulatory process leading to the resumption of coal mining in the Smoky River Coal Field of Alberta. Although many opportunities for low-cost, high-yield mining remained on the property, GCC opted for a long-term production plan that ensures stability for the local economy, sustainable use of the resources in the area, environmental responsibility and a satisfactory return for its investors.GCC entered the Alberta coal approval process in late 2000 with a public disclosure document. In October 2001, GCC formally submitted an application for mining approval and an environmental impact assessment (EIA) to the government and the public. The application covered the proposed Grande Cache Coal project, which includes the No. 7 underground mine, No. 8 surface mine and coal processing operations. The EIA provided a comprehensive investigation of environmental sensitivities in the project area, matched with environmental protection programs. The project is based on commencement of operations in late 2002. GCC’s plans are founded on a commitment to sustainable development and has framed this commitment in the context of a long-range mine development plan that will sustain the community of Grande Cache over the next 25 years. The Grande Cache coalfields offer extensive coal reserves and opportunities, for both surface and underground mining. Combining highly productive U.S.-style room and- pillar underground mining methods and conventional truck-and-shovel open pit mining, GCC’s approach to sustainable development encompasses community involvement and reclamation of mine sites to productive land uses after mining."

Mining mobile equipment is becoming larger in order to lower operation cost and increase productivity; however, their performance characteristics are often limited by the tire capabilities. Although considerable progress has been made in the field of tire research, the lack of comprehensive knowledge on tire performance characteristics impedes the advancement of off-the-road tires. Longer haul roads, and a severe operating environment make tires more vulnerable than other components of a vehicle. Furthermore, due to a limited availability of large tires, mines are facing shortages. Thus mines and tire service companies are keen to improve tire performance, extend tire life and hence lower operating costs. This paper reviews the relevant tire performance research, analyzes tire interactions with the surrounding environment, tire maintenance practices and operational issues using a case study based on data collected during an ongoing project with Fountain Tire.

"In 1987 the only knowledge available of the Ansil orebody was that it was high grade, deep and relatively small . High stresses were also anticipated because there had been rockbursts during shaft sinking and destress blasting had been necessary (Fig. 1). From the design, through the development and now in the mining stage, rock mechanics and microseismic monitoring have been used to maximize recovery and safety and minimize dilution. Examples are given of the use of a microseismic monitoring system in the early stages o f mining. This paper also presents a review of the mine's in situ stress measurement campaign, cable bolting practice and backfill procedure.The Design PhaseAfter the initial mapping and classification work, preIiminary numerical modelling was performed using assumed stresses of ov = oH and oH = 3ov• The empirical Mathew's analysis was then used to optimize stope dimensions based on geomechanics data available at the time (Bawden et 01., 1988; Falmagne, 1987; Potvin et 01., 1988). Because of high stresses predicted by numerical modelling and a brittle, strong and relatively unfractured host rock which was believed to be rockburst prone, it was decided to mine without temporary or permanent pillars. However, in order to satisfy production rates, the orebody had to be broken up into two horiwns separated by a triangular pillar (Fig. 2). The final mining sequence is shown in Figure 3.The Development PhaseAt this point, based on work accomplished to date, including mapping and observations from drifting and modelling, the following problems were identified: (1) flat backs in the hangingwall andesite were thought to be highly stressed; (2) flat backs in weak massive sulphide ore would also be subjected to high stress and be difficult to support; (3) the felsic dyke was noted as a "" stress raiser"" , because activity increased as drifts approached it; and (4) chlorite coating of joints in the hangingwall was thought to be an important factor in reducing their stability."

"This paper aims to introduce and discuss a newly developed algorithm, which can be uploaded on smart watches and other mobile devices to inform and protect underground personnel working in hot and humid environments. Using this algorithm, the metabolic rate (M) of a worker can be determined in “real-time”. In addition, besides warning signs and alarm signals emitted by the smart watch, the algorithm has the ability to determine work-rest time periods based on the worker’s physiological parameters (e.g. age, height, weight, gender) and the climatic parameters (Td, Tw, flow velocity). This paper also investigates whether a re-designed auxiliary ventilation system can provide appropriate work conditions in the production stopes. INTRODUCTION An underground environment with high temperature and humidity conditions generated from various heat and moisture sources can significantly affect the thermoregulation processes of the human body. This can lead to heat-related illnesses such as heat rash, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Heat stroke is a serious illness that carries a high risk of fatality, if the underground workers are not immediately treated and the climatic conditions are not corrected (McPherson, 1993). There are two methods used to control the climatic conditions in underground mines: (1) Using ventilation and cooling systems to reduce the thermal stress on the mine workers, and (2) Reducing the heat transferred to the ventilating air from major sources such as: strata, auto-compression, mining equipment, groundwater, blasting, etc. The heat from strata and auto-compression is transferred to the ventilating air at varying degrees, based on factors such as the virgin rock temperature (VRT), the thermal properties of the surrounding rock formations, and the surface air temperature. However, the use of mining equipment and blasting processes can be managed to reduce their contribution to the mines’ overall heat load. To provide appropriate work conditions, selecting the most suitable cooling method depends on the level of heat to be removed, the location of the problem areas, and economic constraints (Brake & Bates, 2002; McPherson, 1993). Because every mine is unique, it is essential to monitor the climatic conditions to select the most appropriate method of cooling. A majority of the time, simply adjusting or re-designing the auxiliary ventilation system can efficiently remove the heat and dilute the contaminants. This may involve moving the ducting system, changing the size of the duct, changing the size of the auxiliary fan, or switching from forcing to an exhausting fan arrangement. If the required air volumes are higher than the existing primary ventilation system can supply, other measures may need to be taken to increase the airflow delivery. This may include regulating the flow in some areas of the mine to increase airflow to the desired area, adding booster fans, or replacing the primary fans."

"Testwork was conducted in order to compare the effectiveness of carbon based catalysts while oxidizing a gold-bearing pyrite concentrate under atmospheric conditions. Without the use of a catalyst the oxidation of pyrite was incomplete after 96 hours, resulting in roughly 60% pyrite oxidation. Furthermore the resulting sulphate yield from unassisted pyrite oxidation ranged between 72 and 84%. It is evident that atmospheric oxidation of pyrite is not viable due to slow oxidation kinetics and high sulphuric acid production when using a ferric sulphate media without a catalyst. The effect of two different carbon based catalysts, one Lewatit® AF 5 a new microporous carbonaceous bead, and the second a granular coconut shell based activated carbon, were tested under the same oxidation conditions as the unassisted pyrite tests. After 96 hours, Lewatit® AF 5 assisted oxidation showed approximately 96% pyrite oxidation with a sulphate yield ranging between 26 and 35%, while the activated carbon assisted oxidation reached approximately 100% pyrite oxidation with a sulphate yield between 36 and 37%. Testwork indicated that not only does the addition of a carbon based catalyst greatly improve the oxidation kinetics and lead to almost complete oxidation, the sulphate yield is also drastically reduced, resulting in very high elemental sulphur yields.INTRODUCTION Pyrite is an important sulphide mineral due to its ability to contain invisible gold concentrations up to 132 g/t (Chryssoulis & Cabri, 1990). As a result, ores composed of only a small amount of pyrite still have the ability to contain high gold grades. This refractory gold cannot be accessed via conventional gold leaching processes, such as cyanidation, and additional oxidative pre-treatment is required to liberate the gold, making it more amenable to extraction (Marsden & House, 2006). Current oxidative pre-treatments do exist consisting of both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes including high temperature and high pressure leaching within autoclaves, biological atmospheric leaching and roasting. Autoclaves are a proven process reaching desirable recoveries within approximately a 1–2 hour retention time, due to the increased temperatures and pressures, allowing for an increase in dissolved oxygen (Marsden & House, 2006). The typical reaction for pyrite oxidation within autoclaves is presented in Equations 1, 2 and 3."

"IntroductionThe Chairman, in his speech to this body last year in Montreal, stated that the Dominion Coal Board looked to and depended upon the Bureau of Statistics for statistical material, and the Bureau does collect and publish monthly and annual data on coal. It may therefore be asked why an officer of the Dominion Coal Board should prepare and give a talk on statistics.I would explain that it has been our experience in the Board that, since the supply and consumption of coal in Canada is subject to a seasonal ebb and flow, it can be more profitably studied on the basis of a twelve-month period ending on March 31st than of a calendar year, since the end of March does represent a fairly stable end point in this ebb and flow. The figures are not prepared or published by the Bureau on that basis and it has therefore been thought that a presentation on this fiscal-year period would be of interest. The Bureau of Statistics has agreed that this may be valuable and all the data here presented are based on the reports secured from various sources by the Mining, Metallurgical and Chemical Division, Dominion Bureau of Statistics. The only contribution by either myself or the staff of the Dominion Coal Board has been the tabulation in a different twelve month period, and the comments upon the picture presented.It should be noted that the data for the month of March, 1950, are not available in all cases and consequently the figures for that year contain an estimate for this month."

New "clean technologies" to treat mining and metallurgical effluents containing dissolved metals have been successfully applied at mine sites in North America and Asia, treating water flows up to 24,000 m3/day. These clean technologies offer significant benefits compared to conventional alternatives and provide a sustainable solution that eliminates residual waste sludge, improves water conservation, generates revenues from wastewater, and delivers overall improvements to the environment. This paper will profile these technologies, and provide best practice case study examples of their application at mining operations, including data for water chemistry, flows, water quality, capital and operating costs, and life cycle costs of treatment.

"Increase in permeability of rock mass is vital for both petroleum and geothermal applications. Hydraulic fracturing is a common method to create and increase the permeability for production. Due to the complexity of fracture propagation in a naturally fractured medium, understanding the interaction between hydraulic fracture (HF) and natural fracture (NF) is of great importance to optimize the fracturing process. The possibility of interaction between HF and NF is partly a function of orientation. Various scenarios are predictable for hydraulic fracture regarding the intersection with NF such as being arrested by NF, crossing NF or crossing the fissure while injecting water into it. Different parameters such as geomechanical and geometrical properties of surrounding rock mass, the operational parameters such as injection rate and the angle between created hydraulic fracture and natural fracture (approach angle) can affect the result of hydraulic fracture and natural fracture intersection. In this paper, using a series of flow-coupled Distinct Fracture Network (DFN) simulations, hydraulic fractures were analyzed to investigate the influence of the aforementioned parameters on the hydraulic fracture propagating. Results show that the most significant parameters affecting the interaction of natural and hydraulic fracture are orientation of the intersection as well as injection rate. The interaction and fracture propagation in NF and HF intersections are also studied and discussed in detail.INTRODUCTIONThe hydraulic fracture technology has substantially changed the oil, gas and geothermal industries. With the help of this technology, extraction of fossil resources from tight shale reservoirs will be economical, feasible and sustainable. Due to presence of massive oil and gas trapped in these reservoirs, this technology has been the center of attention for the past 40 years (King, 2012). Hydraulic fracturing is the process in which high pressure water is pumped into shale unconventional reservoirs with low to ultralow permeabilities. With this process paths are created in these mediums for delivering oil and gas to horizontal wellbore and increase the surrounding rock medium permeability. Economical and sustainable stimulation of these tight reservoirs is highly dependable on our understanding in regard to fracture propagation in the highly complex rock medium. Hydraulic fracturing process in rock mediums with preexisting natural fractures is more complex because of the high possibility of Hydraulic Fracture (HF) being arrested or deviated by Natural Fracture (NF). Also, HF and NF intersection can influence the required pumping pressure, injection rate, the outcome of horizontal wellbore and the affected geological underground zones. Since the 1950s, numerous studies have been conducted to predict and plan fracture propagation with the help of modeling and simulation methods. Having a thorough and accurate prediction of fracturing process will not only prevent stimulation of unwanted geological zones or pollution of aquifers, but also will improve the efficiency of the fracturing process. Previously, several studies have been conducted in order to investigate and analyze the interaction of hydraulic fracture and natural fracture (Cottrell, Hosseinpour, & Dershowitz, 2013; Doe, Lacazette, Dershowitz, & Knitter, 2013; Shakib, 2013; Zhang & Jeffrey, 2006)."

"A solid flows out of a bin provided that the outlet is sufficiently large so that stable obstructions to flow do not develop. The geometry and surface finish of a bin and the construction of the feeder determine the type of flow pattern which then develops within the bin. The pattern, in turn, affects the uniformity and consistency of the stream, segregation, caking, degradation, live capacity and the action of level measuring devices.In most bins now in operation, material flows toward the feeder through a channel which forms within the stationary solid. This is referred to as funnel flow. If the hopper of the bin is sufficiently steep and smooth and the feeder capable of drawing material across the whole area of the outlet, all the solid flows whenever the feeder is in operation; this is referred to as mass flow. Mass-flow bins are usually far superior to funnel-flow bins; their initial cost is also usually higher.The paper describes the design criteria used in deter-mining the minimum bin outlet needed for flow and the bin geometry needed for mass flow."

Yukon, one of the most potentially accessible, relatively undeveloped, regions of Canada, has major mineral possibilities. The Klondike placer gold fields and the Mayo silver-lead ?district are the sole major producers but large base-metal re-serves have been discovered in re-cent years and important asbestos deposits are now being explored. Several major exploration companies are active in this region despite short seasons, permafrost overburden, remoteness, lack of transportation, and resultant high costs. Pro-posed new roads can be expected to accelerate development. At ?present the major future mineral possibilities are considered to be lead-zinc, copper, aslbestos, silver-lead, gold, and mineral fuels. These and other mineral possibilities are outlined for various geological subdivisions of Yukon. Major favourable metallogenic features of Yukon include complexity of rock types and structures, widening of the Cordillera with cross-trends, and variety and quantity of mineralization found even with limited prospecting. Comparisons with southern 'British Columbia and the U.S. Cordillera suggest that further exploration will result in discovery and development of more major ore deposits and reserves which will eventually revolutionize economy of mining in Yukon. Such mineral resources, with interior petroleum and natural gas possibilities, and ?huge coastal hydroelectric power potential, are the foundations of a much larger future mining industry in Yukon.

"The molybdenite property of Brynnor Mines Limited, Boss Mountain Division (wholly-owned subsidiary of Noranda Mines Limited), is situated approximately 360 miles northeast of Vancouver on the east slope of Takom-kane mountain in British Columbia's Cariboo District. Orebodies at the deposit fall into two categories; quartz breccia, and veins and stringers. The development of the breccia ore zone was started in June, 1964. The bulk of the ore is being mined from the stringer ore zone. The ore-body has been divided into 100-foot stopes and pillars. A sub-level blasthole method is used and the broken ore is handled in drawpoints and scram drifts. The development, drilling, blasting and handling of the ore are reviewed. The future pillar recovery operation is also analysed. The paper is also concerned with a scheduled shaft sinking program."

"Autoclaves have been in commercial use in the mining industry since the early 1950's the initial applications included tin, uranium, cobalt, nickel and copper extraction under both acidic and alkaline conditions. These circuits varied in batch or continuous operation. The geometry has been spherical, vertical, and horizontal type with up to six agitators, with throughput as high as 1000 stpd.Presently autoclaves are a good process selection for many refractory sulphide gold bearing ores. The first application of pressure oxidation in the gold industry was at the Homestake Mcglaughlin's Mine which was commissioned in 1985. This was an acidic pressure oxidation process treating 3000 stpd in three four compartment horizontal autoclaves 14' diameter and 53' long. Since the initiation of autoclaves for the treatment of gold bearing sulphides, there are presently 16 gold autoclaves operating worldwide varying in size up to 18'4"" inside diameter. There are seven autoclaves for the treatment of refractory sulphide gold bearing ores to be commissioned in 1997 and 1998.Autoclave technology has progressed extensively since the mid-eighties. Operational experience has made rapid progress and the result is much smoother and safer autoclave operation. There have been many advances in autoclave technology design. For example, the use of exotic materials for corrosion resistance to reduce down time for maintenance. The instrumentation involved in autoclave operation is very sophisticated which allows for many safety features. The advanced design has allowed for greater availability and as a result operating costs and maintenance costs have decreased. These technological advancements have made autoclave technology more safe and this has resulted in a greater acceptance of this type of operation. Many of the gold autoclave facilities operate up to 9 months continuously without shutdowns. The advancement of autoclave technology has inspired many new applications.Because of the outstanding operation of autoclaves in the gold industry, many other applications for autoclave technology are being considered. The pre-fabricated outdoor rooms are often utilised near the mines and construction sites for office purposes. The paper has presented modelling and simulation results of the integration of commercially available glass coated photovoltaic (PV) energy technology and solar ventilation technology into a pre-fabricated outdoor room. The pre-fabricated outdoor room has been setup at Concordia University, Montréal for full scale testing of the glass coated PV modules with solar air ventilation. The computer simulation model has been developed for PV modules installed on a double wall wooden frame in an outdoor room based on its preliminary field testing. The testing apparatus was a wooden frame assembly of double wall with solar air ventilation: two adjacent glass coated PV modules, air column and plywood board filled with polystyrene. The measurement data collected from various sensors were: solar intensity, ambient air temperature, room air temperature, electric power, surface temperatures of PV modules and plywood board, air velocities and air temperatures in the air column. The enhancement in the air velocity of the air column was achieved with an exhaust fan fixed in an outdoor room. The simulation model is used to perform the two dimensional energy analyses with applied one dimensional solution of steady state heat conduction equations. The simulation model is based on conjugate heat exchange paths with network boundary conditions of convection, radiation heat exchange and solar air ventilation heat transport. The model parameters are based on measured values of ambient air temperature, room air temperature, air velocity at outlet of air column in double wall, electric power and available solar intensity. The model has predicted fairly well energy performance of glass coated PV modules with solar air ventilation installed on a wooden frame. The model is also useful for predicting heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) requirements for the pre-fabricated outdoor rooms.

"The Afsin-Elbistan coal deposit with its 3.4 billion metric tons of reserve is the biggest coal basin and one of the most important resources for electrical energy production in Turkey. The coal deposit is located north of Elbistan, Kahramanmaras Province, in southeast Turkey (Fig. 1).The Kislakoy sub-basin of the Afsin-Elbistan basin was selected as the first open cast mine to feed four power station blocks of 340 MW each. The mine is equipped with six identical bucket wheel excavators of the type Sch Rs (2300/5) 32. The annual coal demand of the power station is 18.5 million metric tons. The Elbistan basin encompasses an area of 900 km2, and its centre lies about 1150 m above mean sea level. The sedimentation took place mainly in the upper Pliocene period. The thickness of the coal bed varies from 20 m to 60 m, respectively. The basal part of the coal beds consists of clay, marl and sandy clay. These formations are overlain by gyttja, which may also occur in the form of calcareous ooze, enveloping coal beds. The thickness of the gyttja is up to 35 m (Otto-Gold, 1969). The coal of Afsin-Elbistan is soft coal and the quality has been found to vary considerably throughout the deposit. The thicknesses of the sterile intercalations vary from 0.50 m to 2.2 m and average 1 m in thickness. From the quality control point of view, the coal seam is regarded as upper seam where the gyttja formation occurs as sterile intercalations, and lower seam where the clay formation occurs instead of the gyttja (Fig. 2). The CaO content of upper Kislakoy coal is very high, grinding resistance is low and base to acid ratio of ash, that is, the ratio of acid oxides of metals to base, is greater than one (Ural and Onur, 2001). Contrary to upper Kislakoy coal, CaO content of lower Kislakoy coal is very low, grinding resistance is high and base:acid ratio of ash is smaller than one. Modified Impact Strength Index (MISI) tests are used to determine the grindability of the Elbistan coals (Ural, 1999)."

"Sulphur deposition on the internal wall of a pipeline is caused by the temperature effect on the solubility of sulphur in the carrier fluid and is not due to particulate sulphur present. Deposition can be completely eliminated by proper insulation of the pipeline to prevent ""cold-spots"" and the resultant temperature gradient necessary for sulphur to precipitate from solution. Friction head losses for sulphur-condensate slurry systems are quite acceptable from a technical and economic standpoint and, in fact, are less than many present commercial slurry systems. Slurry transportation of sulphur in a hydrocarbon pipeline is a viable possibility and promises to have economic advantage over currently accepted transportation modes."

Due to changes in the solid-state conditions of minerals in the rocks surrounding hydrothermal, contact meta-somatic or metamorphosed ore deposits, positive or negative thermoluminescent anomalies may be found in their vicinity. Several types of equipment which can be used for both quantitative and semi-quantitative measurements of the emission are discussed and compared. Methods of selecting, preparing and testing samples to ensure reproducible results are outlined, along with the kind of data which can be obtained from different types of equipment. The normal thermoluminescence of rock-forming min~ erals in the common rock types is noted, and variations in the solid-state conditions in the wall rocks which will cause marked increases or decreases of true thermoluminescence are outlined, as well as the thermolum-nescence-like emissions which are present in the vicinity of ore deposits. The yield strength model developed by Esmaeili, Lloyd and Poole [1] has been adapted to model isothermal aging in Cu-containing AA6xxx alloys, with (a) a moderate and (b) a very low Cu content in the solution-treated, as-quenched, condition, Isothermal calorimetry has been used to analyze the kinetics of precipitation in these alloys, While the kinetic parameters for the low Cu alloy has been derived from the present experiments, the previously determined kinetic parameters for the high Cu alloy AA6111 has been used to model the precipitation kinetics in the moderate Cu alloy. The age hardening responses of both alloys have been well predicted by the model.

"The mechanization of mining operations in underground coal mines has led to faster cutting rates of coalfaces with increased levels of emission of gaseous and particulate contaminants in the workings. Consequently, the fresh air streams from the main ventilation systems reaching distant workings are often insufficient, ineffective or inadequate and have to be supplemented by auxiliary ventilation systems to create and maintain the required working environments underground. The efficiencies of auxiliary ventilation systems are largely affected by drivers of the system such as the type and capacity of the fan; the type, length, diameter and condition of the ventilation ducting and the distance from the discharge end of the intake ducting to the face. Traditionally, single point measurements of methane gas concentrations using either flame safety lamps or hand-held measuring instruments have been used to assess how safe underground coal workings were. Unfortunately, such occasional measurements of methane gas concentrations do not give an accurate picture of the real gas concentration in the working as they are often taken from the easily accessible locations in working. Continuous monitoring of the methane gas concentration in development headings enables a better assessment of the environmental conditions prevailing there. All variations in the methane concentrations are more easily captured on a continuous monitoring basis than by instantaneous single point measurements. The approach adopted in this work was to continuously monitor the concentration of methane very close to the face and about 60 m outbye in development headings, observe the types of auxiliary ventilation equipment and their sizes being used in the working as well as noting the lengths from the discharge ends of the forcing and exhaust ductings to the face.In this paper, empirical methods are used to calculate the mean efficiencies of the auxiliary ventilation systems in selected development headings in coal mines in North America. This enables the assessment of the effectiveness of the auxiliary ventilation systems and the identification of the system drivers in them. The results show that the efficiencies of the forcing systems ranged from 17.02% to 96.81% while the efficiencies of the overall systems varied from 6.04% to 54.16%. The distance from the discharge end of the intake ducting to the face appeared to be the strongest driver in the performance of the auxiliary ventilation systems studied. It was also noted that when the discharge end of the intake ducting to the face does not exceed 7 m, there were faster purging rates of methane at the face and the efficiencies of the overall auxiliary ventilation system were greater than 50%. These findings are very important in underground coal mining in North America as they will assist to avert calamities, such as the Westray coal mine disaster in 1992 which resulted from the explosion of methane gas, by identifying which components of the ventilation system need special attention to create safe working conditions underground."
