Introduction In October, 1945, the Coal Division of the Institute appointed a Committee on The Use of Electricity in Coal Mines, with the following terms of reference: ?To study under which conditions in each deposit the use of electricity can be brought closer to the coal face and which types of electrical machinery can be recommended?. It was not until the beginning of this year (1946) that the Committee had a chance to convene and .discuss the conclusions which are embodied in this report. Mr. McLeod, as Chief Electrician of the Dominion Coal Company, is intimately concerned with that Company's installations, and Mr. McIsaac, as Electrical Inspector of Coal Mines for Nova Scotia, is well acquainted with installations in all coal mines in the Province. The knowledge of both has been very valuable in helping to draft this report.

In the province of Alberta the coal measures dip at so many different angles, between the horizontal and the vertical, that many different systems of haulage are in use. I will, however, only touch briefly upon the general -systems in use, and devote the major portion of this paper to a discussion of endless-rope haulage and its adaptibility to various conditions in coal mines; dealing in particular with the endless-rope haulage that was installed at Brule during the month of August 1923. In coal seams that are approximately level, and newly opened, hand-putting or tramming from the face is the cheapest, but when the mine is further developed tramming is out of the question, and the use of ponies is the next consideration. The time arrives, however, when mining reaches a point where the economical haulage of coal by horses cannot be done profitably, and then some system of mechanical haulage must be installed. The installation of any system should be carefully considered before any particular type of haulage is adopted, because a great deal depends upon the grade or dip of the seam. Motor haulage is impossible to operate profitably on a grade of over 6 per cent and, while it is possible to use ponies, on short runs, up to 9 per cent, some other means of main and secondary haulage must be installed when a 9 per cent grade, is exceeded. I will, therefore, deal first with secondary haulage, because even though a main haulage is established, secondary haulage can be used to feed the main haulage.

A new hot rolled high strength steel consisting of ferrite matrix and nanometer¬sized precipitates was developed. The ultra fine precipitates were identified as TiMoC2, and the strengthening by the precipitates was evaluated more than 300MPa in case of TS/800MPa grade steel. Due to the strengthening effect of the ultra fine precipitates, alloy elements for solid solution hardening can be reduced. It is notable that the steel shows very high yield strength (730MPa in case of TS/800MPa) and very high local elongation leading to excellent stretch flange formability at the same time. The mechanical properties of the steel are attractive for chassis parts and structural parts of auto body. The steel has been produced commercially, and applied to the parts successfully.

"This paper examines typical visual inspections of operational soft rock mine shafts and discusses some of the challenges involved, many of which are associated with inconsistent inspection practices. The paper presents the development of a more standardized approach to periodic shaft inspections that supplement the more frequent inspections performed by shaft crews at the mine. This approach helps to keep an accurate record of changing conditions, compare conditions between multiple mine sites, as well as prioritize and plan potential remedial work. INTRODUCTION Shaft inspections, whether they are performed daily or weekly by members of the shaft crew at the mine, or periodically by consultants, traditionally involve a visual inspection undertaken with personnel traveling on an inspection deck on the conveyance, taking notes and photos. Inspections are typically required by mining regulations and carried out to identify and address hazards before a safety incident occurs that could cause harm to people or damage to property, as well as to help plan required maintenance work. Depending on the site, there can be many challenges associated with inspections in the shaft, especially compared to a typical inspection at surface. Some of these challenges are associated with the shaft environment itself, while others are related to the subjectivity of inspections and a lack of standardization, particularly between multiple sites within the same operating company. Recognizing these challenges, a more consistent and repeatable approach to shaft inspections in soft rock mines is evolving. This approach involves reviewing available historical data, comparing sites with similar conditions, establishing survey control, documenting observations and measurements with locations, and updating as-built or condition drawings. Part of this standardized approach is the implementation of an innovative 360-degree camera with a high-power lighting system that can be used either remotely or alongside personnel completing a traditional visual inspection. The system uses six cameras to take photos at a rate of 15 frames per second, with the image data subsequently processed and stitched, then joined into a high-resolution video. This tool improves time-efficiency, objectivity, and repeatability of inspections."

AT the present time we hear a great deal about organization of labour, collective bargaining, workmen's councils, and company unions; about C.1.0. with its principle of vertical unions and A.F.L., largely based on craft unions; and about provincial and federal laws for protection of labour's right to collective bargaining. What we perhaps hear too little about is corresponding organization of the employers, although it recently is mentioned more frequently. I will only mention W. H. Davis, Chairman of the United States War Labour Board, who has had and is having plenty of experience in this field and has also studied labour conditions in Europe-in Sweden for instance. He has repeatedly expressed the opinion that where employer-employee problems are involved, a thing badly needed in America is organization of employers as well as employees to get some order in the present chaos. With this I agree. I believe a strong organization on one side necessitates a correspondingly strong organization on the other side; that has at least been the experience in the industrialized countries in Europe. I happen to be fairly familiar with conditions in Norway, where they have struggled with these problems for fifty years, and a talk on the history, development, and present state of employer-employee relations in that country might perhaps be of interest as giving a general picture of the development of such relations in the northwestern European countries as a whole. The talk was originally given to the Fourth Year students in Mining and Metallurgy at the University of Toronto. I have changed it somewhat to fit a different audience, but I hope you will make allowances if you now and then are reminded of the school auditorium. I will try to be as objective and factual as possible, but it is probably unavoidable that some of what is said is coloured by personal opinion.

"AbstractThis paper describes the geological procedures used to evaluate two mineable high-volatile C bituminous coal seams at Coal Valley , located in the outer foothills belt of the Rocky Mountain Eastern Slopes in west-central Alberta. Lexco Testing Ltd., the exploration arm of Luscos: Ltd., owns and operates an all -weather geophysical logging system which provides gamma, focused density , single-point resistance and caliper logs in a single pass. A mathematical analysis for a theoretical interpretation of the single-point resistance log confirms empirical research that bed boundaries are located at a point 10% from the bottom of the curve. A unique and efficient triple-tube, wireline rotary coring system cuts an undisturbed 0.076m- diameter core in a plastic liner at recoveries exceeding 90% . Although only 10% of the total footage is cored, it provides vital analytical and geotechnical data, and, when integrated with the geophysical logs, improves the quality and extends the usefulness of interpreting both sets of data. All data are programmed to produce computerized structure contour, isopach, isoratio and isoquality maps, and volume calculations.General IntroductionTHE COAL VALLEY AREA is located in the outer foothills belt of the Rocky Mountain Eastern Slopes, 60 miles (96 km) by road southwest of Edson, Alberta. Luscar Ltd. holds leases which total 49,000 acres (19,830 ha) , of which 18,300 acres (7,410 ha) have been assigned to the Coal Valley mine area (Fig. 1 ) . There are two Paleocene high-volatile C bituminous coal seams initially developed for mining within a total stratigraphic interval of 750 feet (230 m ) (Fig. 2 ). These seams strike generally NW, and in the undisturbed areas generally dip westerly from 10 to 30 degrees."

Introduction The writer was instructed to visit the Chibougamau region during the field season of 1927 and report on the mineral discoveries that had been made there since 1911. lt was deemed advisable to obtain detailed information regarding the rocks underlying the area in the vicinity of these recent discoveries. Accordingly an area 60 square miles in extent was mapped. The outcrops were studied along the water courses and along bush traverses spaced at half-mile intervals between these water courses. The completion of the rest of the summer's programme allowed only three weeks for this work. lt is from this small, mapped area, and this necessarily cursory survey, that the material for this paper was obtained. Location And Means Of Access The name Chibougamau district is applied loosely to an ill-defined area of about 1,000 square miles lying mostly north and west of Chibougamau lake in the Province of Quebec. The lake is approximately half way between lake St. John and James bay. It lies 150 miles north of the Canadian National railway and 40 miles south of Mistassini?lake.

The petroleum industry has not attempted to operate in a harsher area. The Labrador coastline is exposed to North Atlantic storms and icebergs year’round, Arctic pack ice occurs up to six months of each year. However, there is no doubt that, if sufficient hydrocarbon potential is outlined, development will proceed."

A few studies have suggested that the rate of adsorption of hydrogen fluoride on smelter grade alumina is determined by kinetic factors. However, no performance equation for dry scrubbers has appeared in the literature so far. Experimental data from a pilot dry scrubber with co-current flow were compared with results of kinetic models of adsorption, film diffusion and pore diffusion. The pore diffusion model was deemed the most appropriate. It was transformed into a performance equation for steady-state operations of dry scrubbers by the inclusion of the alumina recirculation. Operating results of industrial dry scrubbers with co-current flow were successfully evaluated by means of the performance equation. The average fluoride content of the alumina was also estimated by using the pore diffusion model.

OZ Minerals owns and operates the Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator in South Australia, built in 2008 and commissioned in early 2009. The concentrator operates via semi autogenous grinding in a thirty four foot ThyssenKrupp Polysius mill followed by a twenty four foot Polysius ball mill in closed circuit with hydro cyclones, designed for an ore throughput of eight million tonnes per annum. The main aspects of designing the circuit are discussed along with the issues faced in the early stages of operation. A review of the optimization strategy applied to the milling circuit such as cyclone optimization, advanced process control strategy implementation and reline management to improve availability is then discussed highlighting areas of significant process improvement that have seen the plant exceed nameplate throughputs above nine million tonnes per annum.

For many years, it has been known that certain loud noises may, with prolonged exposure, temporarily or permanently damage a person's hearing ability. Pneumatic rock drills, al-though among the offenders, have, until recently, remained unaltered and unrestricted as to noise output. Now, there are drills available with higher rates of penetration and yet with noise levels reduced to those of previous models or less. Use of such drills, when proved to be superior in noise attenuation and of acceptable performance, should be encouraged in order to reduce future hearing losses to a minimum. People Have the Right to Hear P ERHAPS the earliest recognized indication of hearing loss due to industrial noise was the deaf-ness developed by the workmen in boiler factories. Here, the vibration set up in the shells by the riveting hammers gradually deteriorated the workmen's hearing, especially those whose job it was to hold the dollies inside the drum, where the sound is greatly intensified by reflection

"The Strathcona Mine is located in Levack Township on the North Range ofthe Sudbury Basin. The main orebody consists of pyrrhotite-pentlandite-chalcopyrite mineralization associated with an embayment of the footwall of the Sudbury Irruptive. A zone of massive chalcopyrite-cubanite-pentlandite mineralization occurs in a complex vein system in a series of mixed gneisses and breccias in the footwall. Vein widths vary from a few millimetres to 6 metres. In December 1979, this zone was estimated to contain 976,000 metric tonnes, with a grade of 9.31% Cu and 0.46% Ni. The vein system has a general strike of N 68°W at an angle of 60 degrees to the average strike of the footwall contact of the Irruptive. The dip of the vein system is 45 degrees sw. The strike and dip of individual veins in the system coincide with the directions that would result if a compressive stress had acted in a direction normal to the footwall of the Sudbury Irruptive, producing a conjugate set of fractures. The strike of the Irruptive at the Strathcona Mine is parallel to the long axis of the basin.IntroductionThe Strathcona Mine, owned and operated by Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited, is located in Levack Township on the northwest rim of the Sudbury basin (Fig. I) . It is one of a group of nickel-copper sulphide ore deposits present along an 8.2-km section of the North Range of the Sudbury Irruptive. In the mines of the North Range, subunits of the Irruptive, going from hanging wall to footwall , include felsic norite, dark norite and dark norite breccia. The footwall complex at Strathcona includes the late granite breccia, which hosts a large proportion of the nickel-copper ores, and a compositionally variable group of brecciated and migmatized rocks, herein referred to as the feldspathic gneiss complex. It is within this latter group of rocks that the vein system of the Copper Zone occurs."

"This paper discusses the project history, process design and layout of the Rainy River Gold Project mill. The circuit consists of a 55 x 83 primary crusher, 15 MW SAG mill and 15 MW ball mill. Both mills are twin pinion with LSS and VFD drives. A pebble crusher is located in the process plant with bypass and stockpile options. Gravity concentration followed by 30 hours of leach residence, carousel CIP, carbon recovery, cyanide destruction and tails disposal in a 1,428 hectare tailings management area (TMA).The Rainy River Gold Project is located approximately 65 km northwest of Fort Frances in north western Ontario. The project is scheduled to be commissioned and reach commercial production in mid-2017. Expected cost is $US877M and is comprised of an open pit mine, process plant, tailings management area and supporting infrastructure. "All mineral processing facilities that use girth gear driven mills need to inspect the gear teeth on a routine basis, whether it be every six months to every three years. The inspection frequency depends on gear tooth condition, and the objective is to ensure the operational integrity of the gear teeth. Conventional methods such as magnetic particle testing, visual inspection or dye penetrant examinations rely heavily on operator interpretation. At best, these techniques can determine whether a defect exists, but are unable to provide information on defect severity. This paper describes the use of combining combined eddy current array (eca) and alternating current field measurement (acfm) to provide a complete survey of all surface breaking indications on the whole gear tooth depth. This method accurately determines the size, length and depth of any cracks found on the surface.INTRODUCTION In order to gain a fundamental understanding of the evolving operational and production behavior of a piece of machinery over a specified time period as part of an effective condition monitoring program, a robust data collection process must be firmly established and adhered to. To be effectively implemented within an organization, a condition monitoring program must have support of not only the maintenance, production and engineering staffs, but also executive management support to ensure successful roll out to realize the maximum productivity of the machinery and subsequent cost-savings. One of the key elements of a mineral processing facility that use gear driven SAG Mills as a primary stage for grinding solution, is the integrity of the critical gear unit that drive the mill. For the maintenance team, condition monitoring on the gear unit is crucial for preventative maintenance. A catastrophic failure in the critical gear unit would require a minimum of ten days to replace the gear set, depending on the damage occurred. This, of course, would only be applicable if the client had a spare critical gear set in inventory. If a gear set had to be ordered, it could take from four months to two years to receive a new gear set. For example, in 2007, there was a global backlog of these types of gears sets resulting in a two year delivery. The maintenance costs associated with a catastrophic failure of this type would easily cost in the millions."

"Boliden Metal Corporation has developed a technique to treat complex copper concentrates containing large amounts of lead, zinc, arsenic, antimony and bismuth which cannot be treated in conventional smelters due to the impurities.Tests were carried out to treat such complex copper concentrates in the TBRC. They were performed in a pilot-plant TBRC with charges of 5 tons. These tests resulted in a new method to treat complex copper raw materials and produce a blister copper low in impurities. The background and data from the test work are presented as well as a flowsheet for a full-scale process.IntroductionThe Ronnskar Works is situated on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia, 40 miles east of the Boliden Mine. Smelting began at Ronnskar in 1930 to process the complex ore extracted from the Boliden Mine. The Ronnskar Works has subsequently developed into a relatively integrated smelting plant.Copper and lead sulphide concentrates from Boliden's own mines as well as purchased copper raw materials are processed. The main products are refined copper and lead, but full utilization of the raw material also yields other metals and some metallurgical and chemical by-products. The products include gold, silver, zinc clinker, white arsenic, arsenic salts and arsenic metal , selenium and selenium compounds, nickel sulphates, sulphuric acid and liquid sulphur dioxide."

"The Antamina orebody is a geologically complex, polymetallic skarn located in the Peruvian Andes. A range of copper and copperzinc ores are campaigned separately through the concentrator producing copper and zinc concentrates as well as lead and molybdenum by-products.Ore type classification at Antamina is based on chemical assays; geological or lithological variations are not considered. Consequently, each ore type demonstrates a wide range of concentrator performance.Antamina is currently implementing a system to track ore movements from the shovel face to the concentrator. Relatively sophisticated models of run-of-mine and coarse ore stockpiles ahead of the mill will be used to account for the variable delay between mining and milling.One of the numerous benefits of ore tracking is the ability to directly associate the measured concentrator performance with a physical location in the orebody. Using existing mine planning software, three-dimensional models can be created of such performance measures as metal recovery, concentrate quality, operating cost, and reagent consumption.Such a database of information allows the true value of different ore sources to be determined. The value of an ore source is conventionally measured as metal content (individual or combined ‘equivalent’) with a cut-off grade applied to indicate some base level operating cost. However, the true value of an ore source should include dynamic factors like haulage cost, reagent use, smelter penalties, and even prevailing metal prices. If an ore source is considered from all perspectives rather than simply its potential to deliver value, the concept of ore becomes more flexible. Any ore source that reveals itself to be unprofitable can be eliminated from the mine plan or possibly blended with others to improve its value. The ability to predict mill performance, and thereby profitability, is a powerful tool.In an operation such as Antamina, where managing ore sources, campaigns, and the delivery of a variety of concentrates in a narrow timeline to customers is a daily challenge, prediction is the key to success and improved efficiency."

Until a fire occurs, insurance and prevention work are often looked on as unavoidable necessities, but as insurance is back of all business credit, it is essential to know that in case of damage money will be available to cover the loss; while the interruption of production, often caused by a fire, brings home the realization that if prevention work avoids such an interruption, it is well worth while. Fire insurance is a legal contract guaranteeing the payment of large amounts to an owner, but it is possible there is no other important contract that receives so little consideration. Although previously carried on elsewhere, it is only of recent years that insurance engineering has been actively followed up in Canada, with inspections of an owner's property carried out for his benefit. Now inspections of this kind are made, advice on fire prevention and protection work ?is available, reports with recommendations with regard to the above are furnished periodically, and with this method applied the owner receives the broadest possible cover and security at the lowest cost. Rates are set by the underwriters by rating schedules which charge for defects in a building and allow credits for protection and other favourable features . These schedules are based on the past record of loss of mining properties as a class, so that a fire in another mining property indirectly affects you, but the amount paid is reduced in proportion as your property is improved. The writer feels, from personal experience, that there is no industry where fire prevention receives more attention than the mining industry, and it is a pleasure to advise that, due to this co-operation, some reduction in the basis rates for mining risks is now being made by the underwriters.

Historical In the course of a paper which is necessarily limited in length, such as the present one, it is obviously impossible to describe in detail the history, development, and present position of coal preparation in Western Europe. Great Britain has been blessed with large deposits of excellent coal of nearly every type, ranging from the high-grade anthracites of South Wales, which are characterised by their very low ash and volatile con-tents, to the superb coking coals of South Wales and Durham -probably the finest in the world -with their low ash and sulphur contents, the latter constituent often well be-low l per cent. Gas coals abound in Lancashire and Yorkshire, while coals from the East Midlands, Northumberland, and Scotland are excellent for steam-raising and other industrial purposes. The excellent quality of these various coals has, in years gone by, ensured ready .sales abroad and it is not surprising, therefore; that methods of coal preparation were largely developed on the Continent in an endeavour to upgrade the inferior fuels found there, so that the prepared product could compete with British coals on the European market.

"In this study, laboratory flow tests were conducted on 2-D artificial rock fracture network models containing a single intersection constituted by two inlet and two outlet branches. Three models with different intersecting angles of 60°, 90° and 120° were tested using both dye solution and distilled water. Constant flow rates were imposed on one inlet, and the flow patterns in the fracture intersections were captured by using a CCD camera. The test results were compared with the predictions made by numerical simulations that solved the Navier-Stokes equations. The results revealed that when Reynolds number (Re) is as low as less than 1, the intersecting angle has negligible influence on the flow rate of each branch and the flow patterns within a fracture intersection. As the interesting angle ? and Re (e.g., from 10 to 200) change, the normalized flow rates of different outlet branches change significantly, due to the inertial effect of fluid flow. These changes could be represented by a series of mathematical expressions involving Re and ?, which could be applied to fracture network models to improve their prediction accuracy on hydraulic properties (e.g., permeability and breakthrough curves of particles) of rock masses. INTRODUCTIONCoupled stress, flow, heat and mass transport are the corner stone subjects for many geoscience and geo-engineering disciplines, such as geological disposal of radioactive waste and geothermal energy exploitation. Many outstanding issues need to be investigated to enhance the knowledge on these subjects, and specifically more in-depth research in testing and modeling of the fluid flow in fractured rock masses is needed. In recent years, discrete fracture network (DFN) models have been extensively used to study the fluid flow and mass transport behaviors of fractured rock masses (e.g., Min et al., 2004; Zhao et al., 2011). In these models, each fracture is usually represented by a parallel-plate model, in which fluid flow exactly follows the cubic law. Therefore, comparative flow rate in each outlet branch of an intersection in these models only depends on its aperture. In reality, due to the surface roughness of fractures, the magnitude of mechanical aperture is usually larger than that of the hydraulic aperture of each fracture (Li et al., 2008; Xiong et al., 2011), and abundant flow patterns could exist in an intersection, influenced by its geometry, varying with changing Reynolds number (Re) (Kosakoswski & Berkowitz, 1999). Recent studies have also revealed that different mixing patterns might exist at a fracture intersection, bounded between streamline routing model and complete mixing model, that determine the final distribution of solutes in fractured rock masses (Johnson and Brown, 2001; Park et al., 2001). Numerical simulation has been the principal method adopted in previous studies, and the studies conducting flow tests on intersected fractures are less reported (Wilson & Witherspoon, 1976; Johnson and Brown, 2001). In this study, laboratory flow tests and numerical simulations by solving the Navier-Stokes equations were conducted on 2-D models containing a single intersection constituted by two inlet and two outlet branches, intersected at different angles. The main objective is to study the influence of intersecting angle on the flow behavior of the intersected fractures and the variations of flow patterns and fluid redistribution in each model along with the changes of the Re and the intersecting angle ?.
