"Underground structures are an integral part of the infrastructure of modern society and are used for a wide range of applications, including subways and railways, highways, not at least nuclear facilities. When the wider area is subject to earthquake activity, underground constructions should be analyzed on seismic and static loading. Observations showed that the underground structures have significantly less seismic risk than surface structures. Available methods allowed analyzing the magnitude of risk for different input parameters of seismic loads in different ground environment. Simulation of earthquake loading on underground structures, in the present paper is given the various aspects of analyzing the potential damage and instability of underground facilities. INTRODUCTIONThe development of methods and computing resources used for para-seismic engineering has finetuned the evaluation of the seismic strength of buildings and equipment. Reinforcements may therefore be decided, not simply on the basis of a reassessment of the hazard, which constitutes input data for the calculation of structures and equipment, but also on the basis of developments in para-seismic engineering. Underground facilities are an integral part of the infrastructure of modern society and are used for a wide range of applications, including subways and railways, highways, material storage, and sewage and water transport and not at least nuclear facilities. Although in the past showed that the underground structures are significantly less seismic risk than on the surface, the professional researches and their results are accessible. Seismic resistance of underground structures is analyzed from several aspects. The currently available methods allowed analyzing the magnitude of risk for different input parameters of seismic loads in different ground environment. For better interpretation of earthquake loading on underground structures, are given below the various aspects of analyzing the potential damage and instability of underground facilities in rock. One of the early studies which covered this are of investigation were prepared by Dowding and Rozen (1978). They grouped damages due to earthquakes in underground structures into three main categories:- damage from ground shaking- damage from fault dislocation- damage by earthquake-induced ground failures (e.g. liquefaction and landslides)."

"High tonnage, low grade gold mines such as Omai’s afford economies of scale that are unto their own insufficient to sustain profitability at today’s depressed gold price. Complimenting profitability objectives is the perpetual challenge to reduce operating costs and optimize unit operating efficiencies while being ever vigilant of issues such as environmental control.Key to achieving these objectives at Omai are throughput and availability gains, gold recovery improvements, cost cutting, a skilled workforce and reliable power generation.This paper attempts a cursory review of startup-to-date plant performance advances and future performance-driven objectives.INTRODUCTIONCommercial gold production at Omai commenced in January 1993 with annual output climbing to 250,000 opy by the end of 1994. A mill expansion completed in August 1996 increased gold production to 340,000 opy by the end of 1997. Current milling capacity is 20,000 in tpd (nom.) with actual capacity exceeding 24,000 mtpd on occasion depending on ore size and competency. Mill feed consists of hardrock (andesite, quartz diorite and rhyolite) and softrock (saprolite, laterite) at a nominal ratio of 70:30, respectively. Present day average weighted grade of the feed is 1.4 g/t gold.PROCESS DESCRIPTIONPrimary crushing, ore handling and the original 12,000 mtpd hard and soft rock SABC mill, hereafter referred to as Mill ‘A’, remains essentially as documented by Konigsmann (1 994) complete with poststartup modifications. The mill expansion, hereafter referred to as Mill ‘B’, features an 8000 mtpd hard rock SABC grinding circuit similar in configuration to Mill ‘A’ and differing only in equipment size. Mill ‘B’ includes a 9000 H.P.,reversible variable speed , single pinion drive, 32 ft. x 15 ft. SAG inill , a 7 ft. short head pebble crusher and two parallel 5400 H.P., 16.5 ft. x 30 ft. ball mills with dedicated cyclone packs consisting of D26 hydrocyclones."

Field tests have been conducted to investigate the characteristics of flow and physical chemistry of acid mine drainage(AMD) in the Hwangji-Yuchang settling pond in south Korea. pH and ferrous concentration of AMD flowed in the settling pond is 6.79 and 25.5 mg/l, respectively. As a results, we found that the ferrous oxidation reacted strongly around the inlet of the pond and the distributions of physicochemical properties is depended on flow characteristics and ferrous oxidation rate of AMD.

Based on fundamental process performance objectives, a standard system for base-level control of most ball mill installations is presented. This system is simple, inexpensive, and provides the major economic benefits available from contemporary automatic control technology.Value Analysis of Grinding OperationsValue analysis (or engineering, or management), originally developed by Lawrence D. Miles of the General Electric Company (1), focuses on the identification of value (product or process worth versus cost) and provides a systematic procedure for its improvement. A recent research and development project involving the application of the principles of value engineering to grinding operations has provided a basic technoeconomic model of grinding processes (2). The functional objectives of the ball milling process and the means to achieve value based grinding circuit control originate from this study.The Need for Grinding Circuit ControlThe economic effectiveness of a process is determined by the quality or value of the product and the related processing costs. If the inputs (both the raw feed and the applied processing work) are absolutely constant, the product characteristics and the process efficiency will be determined only by the engineering design. The need for and degree of process control is therefore determined by the nature of variations or upsets in the process inputs, and the extent to which these effect product value and operating costs."

This paper briefly describes the characteristics and induced factors of coal mining bumps based on the investigation of recent bumps accidents occurred in China. According to the theory of non-equilibrium thermodynamic and dissipate structure, the process of strain energy accumulation and dissipation in the ?Coal-Surrounding Rock? system (CSRS) is discussed during the preparation of coal bumps. In addition, a series of experiments are conducted to analyze the relationship between bump-prone property and micro-structural characteristics of coal. The process of coal bumps induced by propagation of fractures and deterioration of coal mass properties are also analyzed systematically.

"The chemistry of electrolyte systems containing iron remains generally poorly understood despite their prevalence in many natural and industrial processes, particularly in hydrometallurgy. These systems are typically challenging to study and model due to their affinity for complex formation and precipitation even at low pH. Recent developments in the hydrometallurgical processing of nickel laterites at Anglo American have called for a deeper understanding of the fundamental chemistry of the Fe2(SO4)3–FeSO4–H2SO4–H2O system. This paper details the development of an internally consistent, Pitzer ion-interaction model of this system, with explicit recognition of important contact ion pairs (CIPs). The primary application of this model is a thermodynamic framework for the interpretation of kinetic processes occurring during iron(III) reduction with SO2. Adopting a rigorous thermodynamic basis for the system chemistry facilitates the formulation of simple rate expressions that are capable of inherently capturing complex effects. While the iron(III) reduction case study remains the focus of this work, the developments have more universal applications and the thermodynamic speciation model can be extended into other systems containing acidic ferric sulfate.INTRODUCTIONIron is present in nearly all hydrometallurgical refining circuits typically as both a necessary and unwanted impurity and needs to be removed and disposed in a safe and efficient manner. This is generally performed by precipitation to form a range of solids such as hematite, goethite or jarosite. Numerous studies in the open literature have focussed on the removal of iron from refractory gold sulfide ore (Berezowsky & Weir, 1989; Berezowsky et al., 1991) and zinc pressure leaching (Buban, 1999; Ismael, 2003), and PGM matte sulfide circuits (Dutrizac & Monhemius, 1986). Moreover, since ferric iron is a strong oxidizing agent, it has been used extensively as a leaching agent for sulfide minerals (Dreisinger, 2006). Given the outlook of challenging economic conditions, declining ore grades and increasing levels of impurities, effective iron management is going to become increasingly critical to all hydrometallurgical processes.Against this background, and considering the widespread importance of acidic iron sulfate systems throughout natural and industrial processes, it is unexpected that the knowledge of the fundamental solution chemistry of these systems contains such significant gaps, particularly at the conditions typically found in hydrometallurgical applications. Existing literature describing the measurement and modelling of solution speciation in these systems have highlighted their significant chemical complexity (Magini & Caminiti, 1977; Magini, 1979; Lee & Tavlarides, 1985; Stipp, 1990; Papangelakis et al., 1994; Gil et al., 1995; Majzlan & Myneni, 2005; Kormanyos et al., 2008; Yue et al., 2014). Partially responsible for the lack of quantitative speciation measurements is the strong tendency of ferric to hydrolyse at even low pH (Flynn, 1984), complicating the laboratory study of such systems. Moreover, the large number of aqueous species that may co-exist simultaneously makes the study of individual species and the modelling of the numerous interactions between these species extremely difficult (Dry & Bryson, 1988; Stipp, 1990; Majzlan & Myeni, 2005; Kobylin et al., 2007)."

"Placer Dome - Campbell Mine is a gold mine located at Balmertown in the Red Lake District of North Western Ontario. During the last 50 years, the mine has produced over ten million ounces of gold.A change in ball mill grinding media was made in August 1998 from 1.5” diameter forged balls to 1.5” diameter, 18% chrome balls. This was done to reduce grinding media consumption and to potentially help flotation performance.A marked ball test done in September-October 1999 showed that, of the alloys tested, 18% chrome was the optimum for the ore at Campbell Mine. The test showed that consumption of chrome balls should be 3 times less than forged balls.In December 1999, the ball size was increased from 1.5” to 2” in an effort to reduce the amount of oversize rock discharging from the ball mill. This change in size was successful.Grinding media consumption for the ball mill decreased 73% from 1.20 kg/tonne before the use of chrome balls to 0.327 kg/tonne after the use of chrome balls. This clearly indicates that, for the ore at Campbell Mine, there is significant savings in grinding media by using chrome.Grinding ball costs were reduced by 59% from $O.88/tonne of ore milled to $0.36/tonne of ore milled representing a saving of $298,000 per year. This also clearly indicates that using chrome balls is a benefit at Campbell Mine.Test work to show that chrome grinding media is beneficial to flotation has been inconclusive so far but is still ongoing.No tests have been done to see if there would be a benefit with an even higher chrome percentage in the grinding media. Test work in this area is also planned for the future"

"Three main types of base metal sulphide mineralization are present in the Timmins area:(1) -Massive and stringer-type copper-zinc deposits occurring mainly in pyroclastic rocks, as typified by the mines of Kam-Kotia, Jameland and Canadian Jamieson, or within or close to possible breccia pipes as shown by the Genex and Kidd Creek mines. With the exception of the Kidd Creek mine, all of these orebodies occur northwest of Timmins (Kamiskotia area) and appear to lie within or close to a major center of volcanic activity characterized by a thick accumulation of felsic pyroclastic rocks and subordinate epizonal intrusions. The margins of the rhyolitic pile are interfingered with mafic volcanics; overlying sedi-ments mark the termination of a vol-canic cycle. The copper-zinc deposits in the Kamiskotia area are confined to a particular stratigraphic unit. Ore-bearing solutions were probably derived from the intrusive complex of the volcanic pile.(2) -Porphyry copper deposit of the Mcintyre mine. The deposit occurs in a quarz porphyry intrusion related to the volcanism in the area (Hurst, 1936). Mineralization was probably introduced at the time of intrusion, and subsequently redistributed within the porphyry during deformation. (3) -Massive and disseminated nickel mineralization, associated with serpentinized alpine-type ultramafic intrusions, as shown by the Alexo, McWatters, Hart, Inco and Texmont deposits. The nickel mineralization occurs at or near contacts of the serpentinites with felsic or mafic volcanics, or sulphide-bearing iron formations. The nickel deposits south of Timmins are confined to a particular stratigraphic unit along the margins of domical-shaped structures which appear to outline former volcanic centers. Sulphurization as pro-posed by Naldrett (1966) appears to be a workable hypothesis for the formation of some of the deposits."

"A bulk mining method is employed at the Lockerby mine resulting in the formation of large muck-piles. If these muckpiles remain in the stopes for some time they may agglomerate to the extent that the muck cannot be removed by a scooptram. A laboratory investigation was undertaken with sulphide material from the mine in order to detemine the time that oxidation begins and the flowability of the material as a f unction of several factors. The laboratory results are applied to the conditions in the muck-piles.The time of the beginning of oxidation of the material decreases as the sulphide composition, water content and availability of air increases. Oxidation is retarded by the addition of a copper sulphate solution instead of water. The unconfined yield force (strength} of the material increases with an increase in the sulphide composition, water content and time. The material ceases to be free-flowing before there is visible evidence of oxidation and this suggests that oxidation actually begins earlier and that agglomeration is also due to the capillary action of water.Broken ore should be removed from the stope prior to the time a muck-pile ceases to be free -flowing-perhaps as early as two days f or high-grade ore and 5 days f or low-grade ore. In order to control dust, 1.4 weight per cent of a 5 per cent solution of copper sulphate should be added 10 the muck-pile rather than water. This inhibits oxidation and increases the time that a muck-pile remains free-flowing."

Aluminum was hot worked at 400 - 500°C and strain rates (e ) of 0.004 -0.1s-1, under reversing strains (c) of 0.5 to 0.2 or 0.5 to 0 and also advancing from 0.5 to 1 or 0.5 to 5. Under similar test conditions for different parts of the strain paths, the average measured flow stresses are found to agree with each other. In the forward and backward strain path tests, the almost identical steady state plateaus affirm the occurrence of dynamic recovery (DRV). On reversal of strain direction at constant e , there was generally negligible Bauschinger effect. In specimens annealed at 400°C, static recrystallisation (SRX) was followed microstructurally. mainly by disappearance of elongated grains with serrated boundaries because the new grains were only little a finer than the old due to low strain energy. The only influence of reversing strain path observed was the effect of change of grain boundary area as grains elongated or returned towards equiaxed. In optical microscopy, elongated grains with serrations and deformation bands confirmed DRV in forward path specimens. In reverse path specimens, equiaxed grains were gradually restored with retention of serrations and bands. In low magnification polarized optical microscopy, grain alignment increased with strain for forward path specimens; whereas it decreased in reverse path ones, supporting DRV. Orientation imaging microscopy (OIM/SEM) revealed that elongated grains are broken up as deformation bands rotate during the forward path and that grains return to equiaxed appearance on backward straining. Comparative studies using optical microscopy in polarized light (POM), OIM/SEM and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that while subgrains remain equiaxed and constant in size and character during the forward and backward paths, the fraction of low angle facets decreased while that of high angle grain facets increased with increasing strain; these are coupled with a fairly low fraction of medium angle boundaries. The results contribute to the understanding that dynamic recovery in aluminum maintains sub-boundaries with low misorientation but as grains elongate and more subgrain become adjacent to grain boundaries the fraction of high angle boundaries rises (with backward straining it was vice versa).

"I ASSUME that any effort on my part to deal with the question of the importance of the mining industry is going to be largely an exercise in preaching to the converted, but there are one or two aspects that I'd like to particularly mention.The first is that, in terms of almost all factors, the mining industry is a very important industry in Canada. It is important in terms of employment in relation to the gross national product of Canada and it is particularly important in the international trade of Canada. So far from being insignificant domestically, it is also an extremely important factor in the international picture. That's an important point to bear in mind, because as we talk about all the other matters we never can lose sight of the fact that mining management always has to be conscious of its international competitive position. It is something that one forgets at one's peril, and to a somewhat greater extent than is true of many other industries, those managements have to compete in an international context for their markets, to some extent for their people for specialized skills and of course for finance. In the evolution of domestic policies it is a very, very perilous step to take to impair that competitive ability of the domestic mining industry."

More than 700,000 feet of diamond drilling was completed in the Blind River area between 1953 and 1958. Much of this drilling was at depths which are still not usual in North America. However, as the tendency is to deeper holes, factual data from the Blind River operation may well provide information of value in future programs. Rates of drilling decreased with in-creasing depth, but uncommonly good rates (an average of over 50 feet per day over more than 4,000 feet of hole) were achieved with proper engineering and care. Costs varied as contractors and geologists became familiar with the area Hole deviation in the Blind River area was locally severe and control of the hole trace became a major problem. Careful surveying was necessary and found to be highly re-liable. It was found that control of the hole trace above 1,500 feet was much more difficult than at depths below 1,500 feet. This paper presents a brief picture of the quality of coal produced in Eastern Canada for use in thermal generating stations. It describes, in particular, the characteristics of coals burned in six power plants -two in New Brunswick and four in Nova Scotia. Each station is dis-cussed in turn, and comments are made on the coals used therein with regards to origin and physical and chemical properties affecting station operation. A table of coal data shows, at a glance, the wide variation in the quality of coals received by these stations from producers in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. "The promotion of improved coal quality for thermal generation can benefit our national economy." T HIS is the opening statement in a paper which was presented by Mr. D. A. Pirttinen at the Coal Division's Toronto meeting in April, 1960. In bringing the power engineer's viewpoint to the coal producers' attention, Mr. Pirttinen made a survey of utility steam plants operating in Canada, and the results of this survey formed the basis for his paper, which he titled: "Generating Station Coal Quality.

"Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V. (Peñoles) in Mexico, is a major silver producer. The Peñoles Mining Division has eight Mining Operations and in seven of them, flotation is used to concentrate the metal and mineral values. Common metals and minerals values are: metallic gold and silver, gold-silver alloys, silver sulphide minerals (acantite, pyrargirite, argentite, proustite); lead sulphide mineral, galena; zinc sulphide mineral, sphalerite; and copper sulphide minerals (chalcopyrite and bornite).In the last years, a special emphasis has been given to using modal analysis to identify ore mineralogical limitations, in order to direct efforts into key areas where opportunities exist to improve the metallurgical results.This work aims to share Peñoles mineralogical and metallurgical results, through presenting, discussing and drawing conclusions on these results; as well as pointing out areas where more work is needed to improve the Concentrator´ performance.PEÑOLES BACKGROUNDPeñoles´s mission is to add value to non-renewable natural resources on a sustainable manner. Introduction The greater portion of the information presented in this paper was obtained in the course of an investigation on clay gathering and its cost in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario (1). For assistance in the preparation of the paper, the writer wishes to record his thanks to Mr. Howells Fréchette, Chief of the Ceramics and Road Materials Division of the Mines Branch. Clays are mineral substances consisting essentially of hydrous aluminium silicate which become plastic when wet, fairly hard when dry, and stony masses when burned to a sufficiently high temperature and re-cooled. Shales are clays which have been indurated by the processes of nature. Millions of tons of clays and shales are won yearly for the production of brick, tile, sewer pipe, drain tile, roofing tile, fire-brick, china-ware, wall and floor tile, cement, and a host of other products. There are certain types of clay which, due to their particular qualities and limited distribution, are mined entirely or in part for sale to manufacturers, and are even exported from one country to another, as for example china-clays or kaolins, utilized in the manufacture of white-wares and in the paper industry, due to their consistent whiteness; ball-clays, utilized in the white-ware industry, due to their bonding power and whiteness; slip-clays, used in the stone-ware industry because of their glazing properties, and in the grinding-wheel industry for their burned bonding properties; and suspension-clays, such as are used in the enamelling industry. However, the great bulk of clays and shales won are used in the production of heavy clay products, and the manufacturer of these generally owns and operates his own deposit of raw material.

ABSTRACT The Redwater pool, in north-central Alberta, was discovered in October, 1948, and at the end of 1950 was about 85 per cent developed. Production is from a Devonian coral limestone reef and is found at an average depth of 3,150 feet. The pool has an estimated .productive area of 37,000 acres, and a maximum oil zone thickness of slightly over 200 feet. Wide variations exist in both type and values of porosity, with the average value determined for the reservoir being 6.16 per cent. The total stock tank oil in place is about 1.24 billion barrels. The crude has a saturation pressure of 485 psig, com-pared to the original value of 1,050 psig for the reservoir, and the principal recovery mechanism so far has been the natural water drive. Cumulative production to January 1st, 1951, has been about 15.5 million barrels. These withdrawals resulted in a reservoir pressure decline of slightly over 100 psi. Predictions of future behaviour indicate that the water drive will not be of sufficient magnitude to maintain the reservoir above saturation pressure past 1953, and that, with natural depletion, the pool will be produced largely by a solution gas drive. Pressure maintenance by water injection has been considered and the possibility of raising the pressure to the original value of 1,050 psig is also discussed. INTRODUCTION WITH the discovery of the Lewduc pool, early in 1947, the Devonian limestone became the major geological formation contributing to Western Canada's rapidly growing petroleum reserves. Redwater, discovered in October, 1948, is now the largest known Devonian pool in Canada, with a recoverable reserve estimated at approximately 500 million barrels. Until recent years, the knowledge of the nature and characteristics of this type of limestone reservoir has been comparatively limited.

The campaign life of an industrial metallurgical vessels strongly relies on the quality and quantity of the refractory lining. An operating furnace or converter refractory lining can be assessed either by thermal modeling or by acousto ultrasonic-echo (AU-E) technique or a combination. AU-E is a Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) stress wave propagation technique that has been utilized on a wide variety of smelting vessels for over 12 years with good success. AU-E can determine the thickness of remaining refractory lining, estimate the thickness of build-up or accretion, detect and locate metal penetration and impregnation into the lining, and identify hydrated or cracked areas of refractory. This paper details the AU-E principles, equipment and recent improvements to the data analysis to further improve speed and accuracy. In addition, the paper discusses the AU-E accuracy and limitations through a diverse and vast array of practical examples including a comparison with thermal modeling and physical measurements.

"Locked cycle testing has become more common practice in the last 10 years. Reasons vary from a desire to avoid pilot plant testing, demand for more variability testing within deposits, and perhaps most importantly, a request from the financial institutions who invariably finance many of the projects. Surprisingly, many people don’t understand locked cycle testing, analysis and balancing. This paper provides a brief overview of locked cycle testing, and then progresses into a more detailed discussion on the analysis and balancing of locked cycle test data. The paper endeavors to educate CMP personnel on how to determine if the test was good and if a reasonable metallurgical projection was made. The paper uses case studies to illustrate the key points.INTRODUCTIONA locked cycle test is a repetitive batch used to simulate a continuous circuit. The basic procedure has a complete batch test performed in the first cycle which is then followed by similar batch tests which have “intermediate” material from the previous cycle added to the appropriate location in the current cycle. These batch tests, or cycles, are continued in this iterative manner for an arbitrary number of cycles. The final products from each cycle, i.e. final concentrate and final tailings, are filtered and thus removed from further processing. At the end of the test, all the products, final and intermediate, are dried, weighed and subjected to chemical analysis. The test is balanced and a metallurgical projection is made.This description can be found in many of our classical textbooks for the mineral engineer 1, 2, 3,4. Unfortunately, none of these textbooks provide any discussion beyond the basic procedure. Often, they provide comments such as in Taggart’ where he states; “It is questionable whether in any case it approximates mill results any more closely than the standard batch test”. It is truly surprising that our classic textbooks promote that locked cycle tests are more art than science, and suggest that they can be of dubious value. None of the textbooks provide meaningful insight or discussion in how to assess:"

The combination of the corrosion resistant membrane, acid resistant brick, mortar and steel shell is a composite system that requires a sophisticated stress analysis. In order to obtain meaningful results both the model and physical properties of the materials must be carefully selected. Evaluation of the calculated results requires an understanding of both the failure mechanisms of ceramics and experience with the performance of existing lining systems.INTRODUCTIONAcid brick lining systems are used in pressure oxidation autoclaves and related vessels to provide thermal and mechanical protection for corrosion resistant membranes that are applied directly to the interior of the vessel shell. The acid brick and mortar must be resistant to the process conditions and must provide a mechanically reliable structure.The construction of lined vessels incorporates a wide range of materials that can include the carbon steel vessel, austenitic weld overlay, lead lining, organic membrane, ceramic brick, mortars and other alloy components. The physical properties of the materials can vary by orders of magnitude and when combined in the construction of the lined vessel create a complex composite structure. The materials may be bonded together or act independently of each other. Stresses are induced into the lined vessel include pressure, thermal expansion, chemical expansion and mechanical loads.The complexity of these systems makes it is very difficult to account for all of the variables in the structural analysis of lined vessels. Historically calculations were simplified and designers primarily relied on experience with previous applications.The greatly improved tools for Finite Element Analysis (FEA) available today allow for detailed calculation of the stresses imposed on the vessel shell and lining. Koning & Lauzon (2004) presented a paper on design fundamentals including a discussion on the application of FEA methods at Pressure Hydrometallurgy 2004 in Banff. When a designer carefully constructs a model and selects the correct materials properties for the calculations, meaningful and useful results can be achieved."
