INVESTIGATIONS IN 1936In 1936 the Industrial Pulmonary Disease Committee of the Medical Research Council investigated both clinically and radiologically a group of fifty workers who had been exposed for a number of years to the inhalation of alumina in the reduction factory of the British Aluminium Company. The results are shown in Table 1.They also considered the sickness records of all the workers (Hill, 1936), as compared with those in other parts of the factory (Table 2).

Rehabilitation of mining sites helps to achieve the purpose 5(2c) of The Resource Management Act 1991 û æavoiding, remedying, or mitigating any adverse effects of activities on the environmentÆ. The environmental outcomes for recent and current mining operations on the West Coast are variable. There are some exemplary mining operations which are restoring or even improving land use and environmental factors in the region, particularly those operated by the larger mining companies. There are also examples of an exploitative mentality where the environment and land have been severely degraded by mining activities. Technology has been developed to prevent a repetition of the historical destruction of the environment through mining. Failure to rehabilitate mined land is no longer acceptable to the New Zealand public in the 1990s and damages the credibility of the mining industry. Examples of successful mine site rehabilitation to pastoral farming and to production or plantation forestry are illustrated from the alluvial gold mining industry. Planning, sequencing of operations, the utilization of sailor plant growth materials, and aftercare are key factors in successful land rehabilitation to these productive uses. There is also a recent focus on restoring indigenous forests and wetlands at both coal and gold mining sites, particularly for mines on or adjacent to the conservation estate. The results of scientific research and efforts by the industry on techniques for rehabilitating rainforest and pakihi wetland after mining are presented, particularly from the Giles Creek Dunoille Coal Mine. There is a need for further research and trials to apply and extend rehabilitation techniques to other geological and environmental situations, particularly to mines in mountainous areas and to difficult environments like the coal measures ecosystems of the plateaux above Westport.

'The politics of mining in New Zealand' is a topic I chose myself because of its importance in the future of the New Zealand mining industry. There are many people in the industry who are cynical about politics, cynical about politicians and definitely cynical and often critical of political decisions. In fact, many industry people say they don't want to get involved in politics, they just want to get on with the business of exploration or mining. The point of my address is that politics is important and the industry cannot afford not to participate in the political process.

Recent developments in geophysical borehole log analysis using the Geophysical Strata Rating (GSR) are now routinely used in a number Australian coal mining operations. This allows development of 3D geotechnical strata characterisation models for a range of purposes. The availability of this data provides a means to identify relationships between ground conditions and ground behaviour. As a result, several new design methods have been developed to assist in the strata management process such as roof support, longwall shield design and shaft stability assessment. The Isa Mine of Mount Isa Mines Limited produces 2.6 million tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore annually from sub level open stopes of which approximately 40% comes from the narrow Racecourse orebodies below 15 level.Geologically the stoping environment is complicated by highly fissile shale hangingwalls and below 17 level by a high stress regime.The realization that major hangingwall failures and generally poor ground conditions could lead to serious dilution problems, and ultimately production shortfalls, prompted investigations into the use of low strength explosives.

The object of this paper is to give a description of the new office and changehouse building and equipment at the Zinc Corporation Limited, the office section of which has now been in full use for approximately three years, and the changehouse section for approximately two years. As the expectations of the design have been fully realized, it is thought that this description will be of interest to members and possibly of some use to others faced with similar problems.GENERALIn the centralization of the surface plant around the new main shaft the combined office and changehouse building forms a prominent feature, being located between the shaft and the mill and facing the workshops on the northern side.The scheme for housing all employees in one building was proposed by the Manager, Mr. A. J. Keast, who was familiar with a similar successful structure built at the McIntyre Porcupine Mines Ltd. in Ontario, Canada.The principal features of this building were adopted as a basis for design, and the present layout evolved to suit the particular requirements of this mine.Some of the advantages of the design are:(a) Economy in first cost and space occupied when compared with plants having separate office and changehouse buildings.(b) Easier and more constant supervision of employees and of the plant by the senior staff members.(c) Close contact between officials of all departments.(d) Close covered connection between changehouse and shaft.(e) Avoidance of duplication of ,essential services such as electric power, water, heating plant, sewerage, etc.The Managing Director, Mr. W. S. Robinson, further instructed that the following requirements be adhered to in the new building:(a) Ample accommodation to be provided for office staff and other employees.(b) Special attention to be paid to lighting, both natural and artificial.(c) Working temperatures to be controlled to facilitate comfort and efficiency.(d) The buildings and equipment' to be of a permanent nature with furnishings and fittings of modern design.

Copper waste dump leaching is growing in importance because of the.large tonnages (up to 250,000 ton/day) of low grade waste rock available from open cut mining of copper deposits and proof that controlled leaching of copper from such dumps can be profitable.Overburden or waste rock, ranging in size from large boulders to fines, is dumped as cheaply as possible on sloping sites. Copper is leached from the dumps by applying up to 12,000 gal/min of leach solution (a combination of spent solution from cementation and make-up water) to the top of the dumps by various techniques.Efliuent from the dumps is sent to a cementation plant for copper recovery.Factors which may be controlled, either directly or indirectly, to give a controlled copper content in the dump efliuent (usually 1-2 g/l.) are the cycle of operations (i.e. the alternate wetting and drying periods), thevolume of solution applied to the dump, pH, Fe2+ and Fe3+ content or redox potential, oxygen content, bacteria and their necessary nutrients, and temperature.Dissolution of oxide copper minerals appears to be mainly a function of acid concentration. Copper sulphide minerals need oxidation for dissolution to occur and this is accomplished by a combination of oxygen,ferric ion, and bacteria. Oxidation of pyrite, oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3 +, and hydrolysis of Fe3+ are of some importance in leaching practice. The presence of gangue carbonate minerals is detrimental.Physical factors connected with penetration of solution into large rocks are important and the treatment of an individual dump usually extends over a period of many years. Recovery of copper from solution is usually achieved by cementation with iron (usually in the form of crumpled cans) but the use of sponge iron is becoming more important. Iron consumption varies from 1 to 4 lbiron per pound of copper. Preconcentration of the copper in the efliuent solution by solvent extraction followed by electrolysis may become a useful method.Application of dump leaching techniques to metals other than copper depends on finding an economic method of recovering the metal from solution...

The purpose of this paper is to list by tabulation and flow sheet, the operating equipment and installations in use at Rosebery, and to refer to particular items which may be of interest for purposes of comparison, or because they possess some unusual feature. The general perspective has been taken from the viewpoint of operating and maintenance experience.The sequence begins with ore breaking and transport and proceeds through milling operations. The paper is in two sections, first, mechanical equipment, second, electrical equipment. A brief outline of a scheme for using gravel wash for stope filling, which is in course of installation, has also been given.

Australia is the world's leading producer and exporter of mineral sands. Despite increased production from some other countries in recent years, Australia maintained its No.1 position in 1988 among world producers of mineral sands concentrates. Production of the titanium minerals -- ruffle, ilmenite and leucoxene, as well as synthetic ruffle -- by the seven companies currently comprising the Australian industry increased in 1988 in response to continuing strong demand for feedstock by the pigment industry. Production of co-product zircon remained at the 1987 level, reflecting declining zircon grades. Exports of mineral sands concentrates increased in 1988; export earnings exceeded $300million. Prices for mineral sands concentrates are now at a historical high and, assuming that the world economy remains strong, real prices should continue to trend upwards in the short term. Exploration in the Eneabba-Cooljarloo region and the Scott River area, both in WA, the Murray Basin, Vic, and the central Queensland coast area, has identified substantial resources of heavy mineral sands. These discoveries have reversed the trend of the early 1980s of falling resources of mineral sands. In 1988, BMR estimated that economic demonstrated resources (EDR) of ilmenite, rutile, zircon and monazite combined was about 72.8 million tonnes. However, a substantial portion of the resources on the east coast are frozen as a result of environmental considerations. The proportion of mineral sands concentrates processed in Australia increased with the commissioning of two new synthetic rutile plants; Australia is now the world's leading producer of synthetic rutile (total capacity 272000 tonnes), most of it for export. Australia's two TiO2 pigment producers have both increased capacity, lifting national capacity by some 70p ercent to over 120000 tonnes/yr. As part of the expansion one producer converted from the sulphate to the chloride process. Other new pigment plants are being proposed for the future.

Amongst those whose task it is to design tumbling mills and other comminution machines there is an almost religious divide between devotees of the Bond method and devotees of other methods developed in more recent times. For a decade or so the issue was between the Bond power-based methods and the JKMRC (JK) simulation based approach. The newest method to challenge the status quo is power-based and was developed by Steve Morrell. As the title suggests, this paper will take some liberty at concluding that Fred Bond and Steve Morrell may be separated by history, but not by their approaches to their individual contributions to the science of comminution. Another driver for the paper is that although it is good to have diversity of thought, the existing divisions are problematic for those of us signing public disclosure documents. If alternative design methods produce materially different outcomes for the mill duty, then at least one of them is wrong or being used incorrectly. At some point the unsustainable argument may need to be put in a court of law that we metallurgists have two or more materially different design methods, each of which is correct! Therefore, perhaps a resolution is needed before this occurs?The works of both Fred Bond and Steve Morrell are each directly related to their contemporary grinding mill design and operational environments. Both their approaches are empirical, borne of observing and measuring real world situations. Both worked with theories that preceded them, gathered their own data and then each saw shortfalls in the status quo.Fred Bond was an escapee from revolution, a victim of The Great Depression, and had several near death experiences during his early site-based career. Perhaps he was fortuitously rescued from himself when asked by Allis Chalmers (A-C) to set up its rock testing laboratory in Milwaukie in 1930. Fred’s testing led him to conclude that neither the Kick nor the Von Rittinger theories explained his measurements. His writings on the failings of these old theories caused a divide between devotees of the old and new methods at that time. After many years, and much thought and plotting of data (the old way!), he came up with his now-famous equations (and his Third Theory) which have stood the test of time, certainly in the world of Bond-era machines.Coming from England via several African diamond mines, Steve Morrell immersed himself into the comminution world of the JK in Brisbane about a decade after Fred passed on. The JK had developed its semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) simulation framework using its own pendulum breakage tester, itself a derivative of the twin pendulum impact device invented by Bond decades earlier. At the JK Steve developed his authoritative Tumbling Mill Power equations and was involved in real world analysis of comminution problems on the global stage. Steve’s JK experience coincided with the demise of the rod mill, the rise of autogenous grinding (AG) and SAG milling and a rapid expansion in concentrator capacity.Morrell left the JK to pursue his own interests, which included ongoing consulting work, now demanded by the comminution world. He then turned to investigating a growing list of discrepancies between the opinions of designers and theoreticians, and the factual outcomes. The Morrell Method of design arose from this re-examination of ore testing, real world operating data and these glaring and expensive discrepancies between design and outcome. The importance of the Broken Hill mining field may be gauged from the fact that since the discovery of the ore-body in 1883, till the end of 1931, approximately 43,000,000 tons of ore have been raised.The lode covers a length of 31 miles, and in places is upwards of 300 ft. in width. The ore, as at present mined, consists of an intimately blended mixture of lead and zinc sulphides with silver and gangue minerals.Structurally the lode conveys the impression of a huge longitudinal arch (when viewed from the east or west), having its apex or crown near the centre of the field, in the leases of the Broken, Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., where the lode outcropped at the surface.The minimum depth of the lode in the Proprietary mine was some 500 ft. from the surface, but huge undulations, having an average pitch of 45°, carry the extensions of the arch gradually deeper, to those places where active stoping operations are now in progress in the workings of the North mine at one extremity, and the South and Zinc Corporation mines at the other. The depth of the lode from the surface, as exposed at present, is approximately 1700 ft. at these extremities.The structure and physical character of the ore-body, and its containing walls, are so complex and varied that almost every type of mining problem is met with.

A great deal of technical and research effort has been applied to the development of models to predict fragmentation from rock blasting. A number of quite useful empirical or engineering models are currently available to blasting engineers and consultants, while more sophisticated approaches using mechanistic and numerical descriptions of rock breakage continue to be developed and applied by researchers and explosives companies.The fragmentation resulting from any blast will be heavily dependent on the properties of the rock mass being blasted; however, most empirical models rely on ‘rock factors’ generated from simple rock mass properties to describe the influence of the rock on the blasting outcome. In contrast, mechanistic models need explicit rock mass properties that require sophisticated laboratory measurements and detailed structural data if realistic outcomes are to be generated. The fragmentation modeller is caught between excessively simple rock mass descriptions for the empirical models and excessively complex data requirements for the mechanistic models.This paper briefly reviews the basis of a range of fragmentation models and the rock mass properties on which they rely. Shortcomings in the way that the mining industry tends to characterise the blasting properties of rock are discussed and some practical approaches are described to quantify these properties in both operating and greenfield mining environments. Tertiary volcanic rocks make up a significant proportion of the surficial cover rocks of New Zealand, especially in the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Industrial minerals that are associated with or derived from the volcanic rocks include: amorphous silica, allophane, bentonite, diatomite, ignimbrite building stone, illite clays, halloysite clay, obsidian, perlite, pumice, sulphur, titanomagnetite ironsand and zeolite. Of these: bentonite, ignimbrite building stone, perlite, pumice and titanomagnetite ironsand have been mined and processed for 20 to 30 years, but many of the others require further characterisation of the resource and/or development of markets.   We have compiled interim mineral deposit models for halloysite clays in rhyolite and for zeolites in altered vitric tuffs. These models include geological and mineralogical attributes, which are linked to the underlying volcanic and geothermal processes that have produced the minerals and their source volcanic rocks. Halloysite clay deposits at Matauri Bay (Northland) have formed from hydrothermal alteration and weathering of rhyolite. Clinoptilolite + mordenite zeolite deposits in the Ngakuru area (Rotorua district) have formed from hydrothermal alteration of volcanic glass in lacustrine sediments and ignimbrite. Further refinement and application of these models will result in a better understanding of the mineralogy, localisation and origin of the deposits, with consequent applications in exploration and resource assessments.

The success of smooth blasting essentially depends on geological condition of rock. Also, in the perimeter hole, borehole pressures with light, well-distributed explosive loads are important to minimise overbreak. In order to simulate perimeter holes with scaled model test, the borehole pressure was considered as a factor of scale. Hydraulic oil pressure is applied as borehole pressure instead of using explosives and detonators in order to remove the undesirable effects of detonators in an experimental set-up of just two perimeter holes in a tunnel blast. The borehole pressure on a perimeter hole is nearly reproduced with hydraulic pressure which is generated by non-electric detonators in the hermetical cylinder.

At the Red Dome and Mungana deposits in north Queensland, Australia, it is proposed that mineralisation and alteration developed as a 'telescoped' overprinting continuum, ranging in style from hypothermal to epithermal, reflecting the major changes that developed in the regional setting over the period circa 325 - 290 Ma. Regional assessment suggests that this also applies to many other precious and base metal deposits within a 40 km length of the host Siluro-Devonian Chillagoe Formation.   A ten stage paragenetic sequence of structural preparation, multi phase intrusion and associated mineralisation, alteration and brecciation is postulated for the Chillagoe district.

Steel wire weld mesh is a common industry standard surface support used in underground mining, traditionally installed with mining drills during the bolting cycle. As underground mining depth and stress increase, mining methods and their sequences at these depths place challenges on conventional surface support options. These challenges have provided a need for high capacity surface support options that improve development efficiency, reduce the need for secondary ground support installation and is easily installed with current mining equipment. A 5m2 mesh testing machine was built, suspending a 9500kg concrete slab, designed with multiple hold down points to test varying bolting patterns. Mesh load and displacement is accurately measured using a data acquisition system which pushes against the restrained mesh module with an available 200kN load and 1200mm displacement capacity. A testing program comparing conventional surface support, straps and combinations of both were tested for baseline results. New module designs incorporating existing mesh types and new design concepts were manufactured to allow for single pass installation during a bolting cycle. Nine mesh types, mesh/strap combinations and new mesh module designs were compared using the same test method. Based on these results, two high capacity mesh module types are produced. This paper will detail the test program, load and displacement results and underground mesh module performance, describing the two high capacity mesh modules function within the development cycle and manual handling. The Pilbara Block is a nucleus of Archaean rocks which lies in the North West Land Division of Western Australia, and it constitutes a mineral province that has been divided into two areas-the West Pilbara Goldfield and the Pilbara Goldfield.In the West Pilbara Goldfield two contemporaneous environments are represented by laterally equivalent volcanic and sedimentary successions which together comprise the Roebourne Group. The two successions are lithologically similar to the classical Warrawoona (volcanic) and Mosquito Creek (sedimentary) successions of the Pilbara Goldfield; but in the West Pilbara Goldfield there is no sign of the erosional break which separates the Warrawoona Succession from the Mosquito Creek succession. The Roebourne Group and the igneous rocks which have intruded it belong to the Archaean Pilbara System.Evidence of preconsolidation movement and igneous intrusion into unconsolidated sediment suggests that tectonism and igneous activity, localized along lines of fracture in an unidentified basement, beganbefore lithification was complete. Movement was primarily vertical, and persisted into the Lower Proterozoic.Vulcanicity and chemical sedimentation, accompanied by a diminution of detr:tal sedimentation, is thought to have caused a relative enrichment in the metal content of the middle part of the Roebourne Group; and the metal may have been remobilized during diagenesis and metamorphism, and localized in zones of dislocation formed both before and after consolidation of the sediments.INTRODUCTIONThe name "Pilbara" has been widely applied in the area under discussion, and to avoid confusion the various uses are summarized below.1. This modern plant was installed with the object of treating all oxide ore and payable dump material by the cyanide process.The plant is located on a ridge on the eastern side of Linda Gully. The mill -site has a slope to the south of 1 in 4.The new plant is of steel and concrete construction and was specially designed to suit the climatic conditions which exist at Mount Morgan.THE COARSE CRUSHING PLANTThe ore received from the, mine is dumped into a 600-ton steel bin which is commanded by a 3 ft. 6 in. gauge railway,The mine ore is conveyed by steam locomotives in rakes of five self-dumping 7-ton railroad cars. The dump material is mostly loaded by bull-dozers and conveyed to the binsin large motor lorries. Located on the top of the bin is a heavy railroad grizzly having 12-in openings through which all ore must pass.The flow of ore from this steel bin is controlled by a No. 7D 3-speed Ross chain feeder. It should be mentioned here that, although the bottom of the steel bin is inclined at an angle of 45°, it has been found, owing to the clayey nature of the oxide ore, that the live capacity of the bin is only about 50% of the total capacity.
