Following a detailed assessment of concen trator performance at Broken Hill South Limited which was reported in a previous paper, the fine grinding section was changed from a parallel arrangement of the two grinding circuits to a series arrangement, and the concentrator per- formance re-assessed. The change to series grinding had virtually no effect on the actual or potential capacity of the circuit to make a final product with 80% passing 100 mesh. However, the fresh flotation feed contained significantly less +150 mesh lead and +65 mesh zinc (material which was shown to float poorly), without an increase in the quantity of poor-floating ultra-fine lead and zinc. From the size-by-size flotation recovery data, it was shown that overall recoveries of both lead and zinc were approximately 1% higher than they would have been without this change in size distribution and it was concluded that this was a direct result of the change in grind- ing procedure.

The Western Mining Corporation mining lease on the Bendigo Goldfield measures 5krri x 18km with more than 20 anticlinal folds parallelling th long north-south boundaries. Numerous closely spaced shafts and extensive underground workings on the reef lines along the folds flooded with groundwater following the progressive abandonment of the field. Preliminary water sampling and assessment demonstrated that a major dewatering programme and acceptable disposal methods were necessary to dewater interconnected old workings in areas of interest prior to any underground work taking place. A field wide geohydolic investigation was undertaken to establish geohydraulic parameters, groundwater recharge rates and water qualities. Data from the field investigation together with estimates of the volume geometry of the submerged workings as obtained from old mine plans, production history, and limited pump testing results were used with an appropriate analytical model to obtain estimates of water discharge rates required to reach various dewatering targets. Water disposal options were limited by relatively high salinities, arsenic levels, contained hydrogen sulphide, and the mine locations within the urban areas surrounding Bendigo. Direct disposal to the surface drainage system could not be considered, treatment to acceptable discharge standards was not economically feasible, and it was necessary to adopt a strategy of collection, containment, and evaporation.

The Hishikari gold deposit, discovered by the Metal Mining Agency of Japan, has become a giant class epithermal gold deposit with the highest grade of gold yet recorded in the world through detailed exploration and development by the Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. The exploration strategy involved a regional approach combining geological and gravity surveys over a 900 km2 area which had historically produced over 120 t of gold. These surveys were carried out to grasp the common geologic features of epithermal gold deposits in the survey area. A genetic model for epithermal gold deposits in the area under regional survey was also considered based on detailed research of the Kushikino epithermal gold deposit which was in operation at that time. This model was applied to the targeted areas, and important relationships between mineralization, host lithology, intensive propylitic alteration and gravity highs became apparent. The Hishikari block was selected in this way and bonanza gold was discovered during drilling. Since the development of the Hishikari mine, information useful for further exploration for the same type of deposit has been accumulated.

The geostatistical Discrete Gaussian (DG) model is demonstrated to be capable of providing an effective means of implementing change of support for Enterprise-style mineralisation and thus providing reliable global recoverable resource estimates. At Enterprise, sample grade distribution proves to be highly positively skewed, therefore significant deskewing of the histogram and reduction of variance occurs when going from sample to block support. The DG model was experimentally tested in'the Southern Primary Zone (SPZ) at Enterprise, where high anisotropy ratios and pronounced short range structures are observed in variograms. The experimental test was run for a change of support for which the variance reduction was. approximately 60 per cent. This reduction is similar to that predicted by Krige's Relationship ('the volume-variance relationship') for the practical situation of a change of support from 5 m vertical blasthole samples to 3 m x 8 m x 5 m selective mining unit (SMU) blocks. The DG model was found to correctly predict the grade tonnage relationships for a wide range of cut off grades. The experimental test indicated that, given a representative histogram and variogram, the DG change of support provides a computationally efficient and practical means of reliably assessing global mineable resources at the early stages of a mining project. Further, it allows a range of selectivity strategies to be meaningfully and comparatively considered prior to mining.

As mining and extraction processes improve and lower grade ores become economic, mining for most ores have extended to depths beneath the zone of weathering oxidation created over geological history. These deeper openings expose sulphidic formations and reduced mineral species as either primary ore or simply as accessory or gangue minerals in the country rock. This is not new, underground mining for primary base metal and gold have long been familiar with these problems, as have coal and uranium miners. The change is simply that the number of mines exposing sulphidic waste rocks, tailings to the atmosphere and/or leaving behind dewatered sulphidic rock surrounding the mine void has increased the number of sites from where acid mine drainage (AMD) may emanate with consequential problems for the hydrological environment including downstream catchments (Miller et al, 1996). The principles of ecologically sustainable development (Brundtland, 1987) have been more or less ratified by all the developed nations of the world and this has led, amongst other things, to an expansion unprecedented in the research and documentation of means for achieving long-term environmentally acceptable stabilisation of solid wastes of all sorts. These have revealed that AMD problems can be minimised and even reversed in many cases by the integration or co-disposal of biodegradable organic wastes with oxidising sulphidic wastes (Elliott et al, 1996). This paper considers how this might be achieved at mine sites in Australia and the results encountered at some relevant sites.

The evaluation of historical goldfields is currently topical, reflecting a high gold price, improvements in knowledge and technology. and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold; variable geometry and architecture; and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. The historic Engineer Mine property is located 32 km west of Atlin, British Columbia on the east side of Tagish Lake. The economically important Engineer and Double Decker veins belong to a NNE-SSW vein set. These are narrow, commonly <2 m dilational veins with a minor sinistral strike component and of an epithermal type. Documented ore production between 1910 - 1952 is recorded as approximately 14 263 t at 39.4 g/t Au and 19.5 g/t Ag (for 18 000 oz Au and 8950 oz Ag). The underground workings consist of about 5500 m of tunnels, shafts, raises and stopes over eight levels. The mine is currently being re-evaluated. In 2011, an Inferred Mineral Resource of 41 000 t at 19 g/t Au for 25 000 oz Au (at a 5 g/t Au cut-off) was defined from historical data supported by modern drilling into the Engineer and Double Decker veins. Process variables in flotation circuits are outlined with a view to producing mathematical models of circuits. The nature of the kinetics of flotation are discussed and the effect of process variables on the kinetics considered. An approach for a possible model is briefly outlined.

Gas problems, largely instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas, arose in the early days of coal mining in Australia, leading to attempts at predrainage often including destressing. With deeper mining and new gassy areas being mined, gas problems have increased. This has led to more research, such as into coal-gas relationships, and more practical trials into seam gas drainage in both the Sydney and Bowen basins. Predrainage techniques have been devised to suit the special Australian geological conditions and to take into account the erratic occurrence of CO, (nearly 100 per cent in some cases) in the seam gas. Better mining methods and other improvements are continuing. The introduction of post-drainage has been simplified by the adaptation of long established overseas techniques and equipment.Utilisation of seam gases in Australia is complicated by the presence of CO, but even with pure CH. little has been done.Seam gas drainage has some disadvantages such as the need for, and the dangers of, complex and rigorously controlled plant. Also drained coal becomes harder and dustier.

Autogenous and Semi-Autogenous grinding has become an accepted method of reducing primary crusher product to micron sizes in a single or a two-stage grinding circuit. The elimination of secondary and tertiary crusher circuits and sometimes rod mills helps to lower overall operating costs and, in many instances, can make uneconomical projects viable. Selecting AG/SAG Mills have been rather a "hit and miss" affair over the years, but now with the many different types of tests available, accurate mill size predictions can be made, provided the test data is evaluated correctly. This paper endeavours to simplify the process of evaluating test data and sets down some guidelines for designers to follow when selecting AG/SAG Mills.

The pilot scale testing of Australian coals for their NO, emissions was carried out at the ACTC to investigate the influence of coal properties, furnace conditions and different NO,, control strategies on NO,, emissions. The NOx emissions for the Australian coals tested were found to vary over a wide range and primarily depended on combustion temperature and excess oxygen conditions. These coals did not exhibit any fundamental difference in NOx levels to other world coals. Under similar combustion conditions, the conversion of coal nitrogen to NO. was found to be best correlated with coal rank parameter, R, max per centage. The use of staged combustion as a control strategy was shown to reduce their NOx levels by 56 - 77 per cent.

This paper serves to outline the circumstances and causes of the air-blast that occurred at Northparkes Mines in November 1999. It describes the design of the mine, the geotechnical issues surrounding cave propagation and the cave monitoring systems that were in place prior to the event. A short description of the air-blast that followed a sudden collapse is given. Details of the risk assessment process that evolved during the rectification process are provided with their subsequent modification to form the core of a major hazard monitoring process. The system is in line with the recommendations given by the Coroner resulting from the inquest into the deaths of the four people who lost their lives during the air-blast.

Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) as a seam gas has occurred in several locations in the German Creek seam at Southern Colliery. This paper overviews the techniques developed to quantify the H2S content of the seam, overviews research into controlling and reducing H2S emissions from the seam, and details the procedures used to mine through the HZS zone in 702 longwall panel. Learning points from research and mining experience are reviewed for application in the next longwall block.

Following the preparation of tantalum oxide and carbide (1) an investigation of the details relating to the production of tantalum metal powder was planned. From the literature (2) it was evident that tantalum could be produced either by reduction of potassium tantalum fluoride with an alkali metal or by electrolysis of a fused salt mixture containing a tantalum compound. The latter method appeared to be the more suitable and, as there was considerable divergence of opinion in the literature as to the nature of the reactions involved, it was decided to study the electrolytic process. The ultimate aim in any case was to produce tantalum pOWder for use in an investigation of the problems relating to the preparation of consolidated tantalum.FACTORS GOVERNING ELECTROLYSISAfter a few preliminary exploratory electrolyses several factors which needed amplification were revealed. These will be mentioned before the details of the electrolysis experiments are given.COMPOSITION OF THE BATHWithout the knowledge gained in the preliminary experiments it would be thought that the best material for the bath would be that one which underwent electrolytic decomposition. Consider what at first appeared the most likely - namely - potassium tantalum fluoride. The melting point of K2TaF7 was determined to be 630°C with volatilization and decomposition taking place at that temperature so that it would not have been very satisfactory.

The use of stationary calciners in the processing of aluminium hydroxide has emphas- ized the importance of Bayer hydrate properties with respect to particle breakdown during calcination and subsequent treatment. Test results from calcination of several Bayer hydrates to sandy alumina in the FLS Gas Suspension Calciner (GSC) were obtained in a 250 kg/h pilot plant unit. Particle breakdown during calcination was influenced by content of solid sodium oxalate, trapped in the hydrate particles and operating gas velocities. Owing to the design and operational principles of the GSC it is possible to reduce particle breakdown to at least the same as what is found in long rotary kilns. Other major advantages reviewed are obtained through simplifications in plant design and operation, pointing to low specific power and heat consumption, and generally low production costs, thereby providing an attractive alternative to fluid-bed calciners.

A Joint Venture between Union Oil Development Corporation and Geoscan Proprietary Limited carried out an Airborne Multispectral Scanner Survey over approximately 15,000 square kilometres in the Charters towers area of northeastern Queensland during late 1985 and in September, 1986. The survey, using the Geoscan Mark I scanner, consisted of 50 runs each having a swath width of 5 kilometres. Twelve or thirteen spectral bands were recorded, 5 in the VNIR, 4 in the SWIR and 3 or 4 in the TIR. The results of the survey were interpreted by interactive image processing with the aim of identifying those minerals or their weathering products which are characteristically associated with hydrothermally emplaced gold mineralisation in this part of Queensland. Spectral bands in the VNIR were used to identify and discriminate the iron hydroxides, whilst the SWIR bands were used to outline the clay and carbonate rich areas. The TIR aided in identifying areas of silicification.

The Australian Coal Combustion Testing and Research Facility has been operating commercially for one year and during that period coal product evaluations have been conducted on behalf of four coal companies and one electricity commission. The facility is equipped to assess the behaviour of steaming coal in milling, combustion (including flame stability, burnout and heat transfer), ash deposition and erosion, fly ash collection and gaseous emissions. The relevance of the results of the pilot testing to industrial practice was demonstrated during the calibration of the facility using four coals burnt in Australian power stations. The calibration coals were from the Tarong and Gladstone Power Stations in Queensland, tluja Power Station in Western Australia and Bayswater Power Station in New South Wales. Also an opportunity arose to visit an overseas power station to observe a full scale test burn using one of the early coals tested on a commercial basis in the combustion test facility. The calibration trials showed excellent agreement with industrial coal performance in t:orms of flame stability, turndown, carbon burnout and gaseous emissions. Encouraging correlations were also found in the case of furnace radiation, boiler deposits (slagging and fouling) and electrostatic precipitation. In the case of the last group the only real reservations about the correlations are due to the non-availability or qualitative nature of results collected around the power stations. In all cases there is a high degree of confidence in the facility's ability to predict the relative performance of different coals and in some cases direct numerical predictions can be Made.

The Mons Cupri Cu-Pb-Zn deposit is situated within a complex Archaean volcanic sequence dominated by rhyolitic fragmental rocks. This sequence is underlain by a 150 m group of rhyolitic ash flow tuffs with minor conglomerate and sandstone, and is overlain by approximately 180 m of dacite and andesite flows. The Mons Cupri sequence itself consists of several elongate or circular rhyolite domes, flanked by rhyolitic fragmental rocks ranging up to 400 m in thickness away from the domes. The lithology of clasts (typically 1 cm to 1.5 m in size) provides strong evidence that the flanking fragmental unit was derived by explosive eruptions associated with the rhyolite domes. An approximately 15 m thick shale horizon, bleached and silicified at its base, overlies both the rhyolite domes and the frag- mental unit. A south-dipping chloritic pipe-like body, with near-surface dimensions of 1,000 by 250 m and narrowing at depth to produce a cone-shaped cross section, lies within the rhyolitic frag- mental rocks about 250 m north of the largest rhyolite'dome in the Mons Cupri vicinity. Its east west elongation parallels that of the rhyolite dome. Ghost fragments indicate that the material in this fissure is a severely chloritized derivative of the rhyolitic frag- mental unit. Tertiary laterite is extensively developed in the Darling Range area, but there is doubt that. the high relief areas along the Darling Scarp have been peneplaned. Three distinct laterite types are distinguished which are termed transported, introduced and residual laterites to avoid ambiguity. Transported laterites are recemented (primarily) lateritic materials and introduced laterites are chemical deposits of bog iron type. Residual laterites are formed in situ from the host material which can be either decomposed bedrock or detrital' clay, and the two varieties formed from these sources are termed residual A and residual B laterites. The genetic requirements for residual laterite formation are (1) host material, (2) porosity and permeability, (3) rainfall, (4) temperature, (5) relief and drainage, (6) vege- tation and (7) time. Previous theories on the origin of laterite appear to be inadequate and incompatible with field observations. Field investigations and drilling in the Darling Range area disclosed lenticular section and thickest laterite development on slopes and thin or oc- casionally no laterite development on crests. Lateritisation is considered a surface feature and the end product of the chemical weathering cycle. Field trials at three New South Wales and one Queensland coal mines were carried out to gather data on oxygen "run out" times of Self-Contained Self Rescuers (SCSRs), time taken to escape from the mine, distances travelled and the average heart rate of subjects wearing SCSRs. The study has led to a method of predicting the duration of oxygen supply from a SCSR as a function of the wearer's body weight, physical fitness and the prevailing environmental conditions. Escapeway design, planning for emergencies, familiarity with SCSRs and experiential escape training are critical to control panic and maximise the likelihood of survival of a person attempting to escape in an emergency involving fire or explosion.
