The Hidden Valley process plant has recently undertaken a program to relieve process flow bottlenecks and improve process automation. An environment of cost reduction and restrained capital necessitated solutions that primarily utilised existing equipment and internal resources. Removing bottlenecks relieved pressure from a strained circuit that was unable to maintain consistent performance. Improved process automation firstly stabilised the process, then allowed the circuit to sustainably operate at the expanded capacity limits. These allowed implementation of an operating approach that focused process operators towards identifying and resolving process disturbances in advance. Electro-Slag Remelting (ESR) is a process capable of producing ingots with much lower centre-line segregation and better internal soundness than conventional ingot casting processes, as well as lower inclusion and sulfur concentrations. This process is commonly used for alloyed steels intended for critical applications like components of marine turbines, supercritical powerplants and rocket motor casings. It involves melting a metal electrode using electrical resistive heating in a slag pool and re-solidification of the resulting metal droplets beneath the slag layer, forming an ingot. Conventional ESR fluxes consist primarily of CaF2, Al2O3 and CaO, along with minor concentrations of SiO2, MgO etc. The emission of fluoride vapour from the molten slag causes several environmental and health problems, triggering a need to develop and reduce the fluoride content in the ESR flux. The present study aims to develop low-CaF2 alternatives to commercial ESR fluxes without compromising on productivity and the surface quality of the refined ingot. Thus, the modification in chemical composition needs to satisfy properties like electrical resistivity, viscosity and liquidus temperature, essential for efficient ESR operation. Since electrical resistivity and viscosity are highly dependent on the ionic structure of the molten slag, it is important to understand the effect of compositional modification on the structure of the flux. The present study employs Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopy to investigate the structural variations in the modified fluxes, especially the effect of changing SiO2 concentration, in comparison with conventional CaF2-rich fluxes. Additionally, thermal analysis (Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)) has been carried out to characterise the melting behaviour of the fluxes. The findings are compared with simulations carried out using the FactSage™ software, ver 8.3 (GTT Technologies, Aachen, Germany). Simultaneous analysis of liquidus temperature and the structure is expected to help in identifying the practical suitability of modified ESR flux compositions for industrial implementation.

One means of this evaluation is by examining Case Studies in the strategies and difficulties of developing contract and entrepreneurial research.

Mining cycles have come and gone and with them there have been dramatic swings in the levels of interest and student entry into minerals-related education programs, hence graduate supply to the industry. So what is the problem? These trends will keep happening and the industry will keep on keeping on – or will it?This paper discusses recent trends in Australian minerals education programs and some international examples, together with some of the more recent initiatives taken by both the minerals education sector and the industry, such as the Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC) and MEA. The real problem is that things will not just keep going the way they have over recent decades – there will come a time when there is no longer a supply of minerals academics available to provide the educational programs; and universities will simply shut down subcritical mass mining programs and invest in the much more lucrative programs such as commerce, law, medicine, etc. By the time this starts to happen it will be at least ten years too late for any last-minute reactive response by industry, if they were to try and avert such a consequence. International experience with mining programs bears out this scenario quite clearly.It is therefore timely for industry individual mines and mine management to take a much more strategic look at their role in the education sector. Sustainable mining also means sustainable minerals education – without one, the other will not function over the long-term. There is a pressing need for long-term strategic buy-in by industry into the education sector – not just for the good times, but also through the tough times. This means much more than a scholarship here or there, but includes such commitments as major industry-university research partnerships; collaborative recruitment initiatives and much more. The paper will discuss a range of such issues, problems and opportunities to address these important issues through strategic, comprehensive, long-term commitments by industry and equally significant and appropriate responses by the education sector. A number of standards and guidance materials currently exist to assist equipment designers. The ISO process, however, is a formal process and change often lags behind technology development. In some cases, this may result in weak or ineffective standards that need to be written in general terms to accommodate future technology developments, meaning some standards may only establish minimum requirements and not be overly helpful to equipment designers, in particular when designing for workforce diversity and inclusivity. By contrast, advisory information as issued by various mining regulatory bodies is able to respond more quickly to changes in technology. Standards do however have a safety and productivity focus providing design consistency between equipment manufacturers, a basis for auditing purposes, assistance in mining regulation and compliance, and in the development and application of safety management systems. As an example of challenges facing equipment designers, ISO3411 (2020) provides data approximating the 5th, 50th and 95th percentile of the ‘earth-moving machinery operator population’ for numerous static dimensions relevant to the design of earth-moving equipment. These data are then utilised in ISO6682 (2020) to provide recommendations regarding the location of controls. Attempting to utilise the data provided in ISO3411 (or other sources of static anthropometric data) creates further challenges for equipment designers, in that reference percentiles is problematic for design purposes. There is no ‘5th or 95th percentile operator’ as individuals vary along each dimension (Robinette and Hudson, 2006). Although dimensions have some degrees of correlation, when multiple dimensions are considered, the range of individuals which fall within a given range on all dimensions reduces substantially. For example, only about 82 per cent of individuals in a population will fall within the 5th to 95th percentile ranges for both height and weight. The more dimensions are considered, the smaller the range of people who actually ‘fit’ the description.

"A personal account of my journey from a student from suburban Melbourne in the 1970s through 40 odd years in and around the mining industry including the important events that have moulded my thinking and, as result, have formed the guiding principles of the mining contracting business and related entities that make up the Byrnecut Group. On reflection the game of chance has played a big part in the journey, from the selection of initial study based on my parents financial capability and the one and only offer of early employment by Western Mining Corporation where the formative phase of my career took place in what was the vibrant can do environment that existed in Kambalda in the 1970s and early 1980s. Subsequently the unplanned meeting with Frank Lubbock drawing me back to Kalgoorlie from Fiji in 1987 and the resultant formation of a private mining contracting business, the excitement of the mid 1980s Kalgoorlie mining environment followed by the turmoil of the 1987 stock market crash where business survival was the game, resulting in a relationship with the German based Thyssen Group.Thereafter the development of a large privately owned international multifaceted mining services group and the principles behind that growth. These include: development of strategic personnel and retention of those personnel cashflow management and debt within a private company scenario recognising opportunity for synergetic growth but insisting on market forces driving those business elements, as opposed to internal divisions group-wide sustainable business systems, particularly in relation to leading safety and training processes innovation and renewal to provide the elusive advantage in a competitive market the role of entrepreneurial small businesses in development of technology.The above principles combine to make a margin in a cut throat contracting environment, competing on the world stage against other contractors and owner mining options.CITATION:Coughlan, S, 2014. Two methods of calibrating the parameters K and Alpha for use in Gy’s formula for the fundamental sampling error were investigated. Approximately 480 kg of broken ore from Harmony’s Target gold mine in South Africa was used to compile the replicate samples for two experiments. The duplicate series analysis (DSA) and segregation free analysis (SFA) methods differ in terms of their approach to recovering the sized materials required for the calibration procedure. In this experiment the DSA method split off six more-or-less equal masses of material from a 75 kg lot that was successively crushed to finer and finer fragment sizes. The sublots so formed were split into 32 samples and fire assayed for gold. The SFA method used approximately 250 kg of broken ore crushed to 95 per cent passing 2.50 cm, which was then passed through successively finer screens until a sublot of less than 0.0075 cm was obtained. Each of the 15 sublots obtained in this way were split using a riffle splitter into 32 samples that were fire assayed. A total of 672 fire assays were used in these experiments. The sampling parameters K and Alpha were used for the compilation of a nomogram and to calculate the gold liberation size of the ores. While there are no definitive results in terms of the actual gold grain sizes against which the calculated sizes can be compared, it appears that the DSA method produces more acceptable results.CITATION:Minnitt, R, 2014. Intrusion related ore deposits are widespread in the Central Peruvian Cordillera Occidental and adjacent high-plains to the east and include porphyry Cu (-Au, Mo; eg Morococha), Cu-Zn (Pb-) skarn (eg Antamina), Pb-Zn-Ag carbonate hosted vein deposits (eg Uchucchacua), cordilleran base metal (eg Cerro de Pasco) and epithermal deposits (eg Quicay). Geochronology and petrochemistry of intrusive rocks associated with mineralisation reveals that: most ore deposits were emplaced in the late middle to early late Miocene; and are related to calc-alkaline granodioritic igneous rocks with Sm/Yb >3, Sr/Y >40 and Y/Th <1.5. The largest deposits, including Antamina, Colquijirca and Cerro de Pasco are associated with intrusions with Sm/Yb >4 and which, as indicated by Pb and Sr isotopic data, have undergone relatively moderate middle and upper crustal assimilation. The chemical signature of igneous rocks related to mineralisation likely reflects melt equilibration in the lower crust at a crustal thickness of more than 45 km. Mineralisation was favoured by a change from normal to flat subduction, resulting in increased compression, crustal thickening and subsequent cessation of the magmatic arc. Premiocene ore deposits do occur, but are restricted to a broad E-W corridor between Uchucchacua and Milpo and probably were controlled by a crustal-scale structural discontinuity across the strike of theAndes. Not all igneous rocks with high Sm/Yb and Sr/Y ratios did acquire their trace element signature in the lower crust. Petrographic and Pb isotopic evidence indicates shallow crustal hornblende fractionation or assimilation of pelitic material as possible causes for high trace element ratios in some rocks. These are apparently unrelated to polymetallic mineralisation. Thus, critical evaluation of petrographic and geochemical data in metallogenetic studies, especially in areas with complex basement architecture such as Central Peru is critical and should not be reduced to simple trace element ratios. The spatial distribution of ore with similar processing properties or domains within an orebody may be identified early in the assessment of an orebody to provide a sound basis for later development of the orebody. The assignment of domains in the primary sulfide portion of an orebody is often more difficult than recognition of the oxidised, supergene and related domains usually located towards the top of the mineralised volume. This paper will discuss some approaches to assigning domains within the primary sulfide portion of an orebody. The processing properties of each mining block will be known if the contained domain(s) and their proportions are known. The use of both physical and chemical ore properties to assign the domains is discussed. The domains based on similar processing properties do not necessarily coincide with geological zones assigned by geoscientists. As part of assessing the physical properties of ore, the modal analysis of the ore with respect to the valuable sulfide minerals and the sulfide and non sulfide gangue minerals has to be known, along with the traditionally used elemental assays for valuable and penalty elements. Two scales for determining other physical ore properties will be considered: the mesoscopic scale (examined by human eye) and the microscopic scale (examined via a microscope under high magnification). The strengths and weaknesses of the data obtained at the two scales are discussed in the paper. Broadly, data collected at the mesoscopic scale are much less expensive but the types of data available are more limited. Methods for evaluation of chemical ore properties are also discussed. After establishing a basis for establishing the spatial distribution of domains, variability testing is required to verify the integrity of the designated domains. In contrast, each block of ore in some orebodies has been assessed principally via the results of a laboratory separation on a number of drill core samples or composites from throughout the block, with minimal or no attention to the concept of domains.

THE reduction of iron from the ferric to the ferrous state prior to its titration by permanganate or dichromate may give erroneous results in the presence of other reducible metals such as titanium. Stannous chloride and metallic zinc both reduce tetravalent titanium to a lower form, and so increase the consumption of the oxidizing standard: solution. Sulphuretted hydrogen and sulphurous acid do not reduce titanium, but are slow in action and troublesome to manipulate.Sulphuretted hydrogen is considered to be the best reducing agent for iron in the presence of titanium.* In the method to be described the advantages of the H 2S reduction are retained without the disadvantages of using the gas. The reduction is carried out by the action of a metallic sulphide having a solubility product of such a value that the sulphide iom, are utilized as fast as they are formed, and but little free sulphuretted hydrogen is given off.Cadmium sulphide was the first to be tried, but its solubility product (3.6 x 10 - 2~)t was apparently too low. The reduction was satisfactory, but the excess was very difficult to remove. Zinc sulphide (S.P. = 1.2 x 10 - 23) was found to be quite satisfactoryin both respects. The zinc sulphide is preferably used in the form of an emulsion prepared from pure zinc sulphate as follows: About 100 grm. of ZnS047H20 is dissolved in 2 litres of water. H2S is passed until no further precipitate is obtained, the acid formed being barely neutralized from time to time by the addition of ammonia. The precipitation of the sulphide in a slightly acid solution gives a finer emulsion than that prepared in an alkaline solution, and any iron present remains dissolved. The precipitate is allowed to settle and the clear liquid decanted. The precipitate is then shaken up with more water, acidified with a little sulphuric acid, allowed to...

Gross at the First Ordinary Meeting of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, August 18th, 1952.Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen:Confronted with the task of reviewing the progress of Mount Isa Mines Limited, since the inception of the Company 28 years ago, I soon found that effective coverage was a task beyohd me, if I were to confine the address within the limits of time allowable. Faced with the alternative, a summary, that could only fail to -do justice to the subject, I turned elsewherl? for inspiration and found it in Chester Wilmot's book "The Struggle for Europe". Those of you who have read this masterly contribution to the literature of World War II will recall that he takes us, most dramatically, behind the scenes and we learn of the thoughts and ideas that were uppermost in the minds of both allied and enemy leaders at times when decision's that profoundly influenced the course of the war were taken. I felt I could safely follow this rather novel approach to my own problem. Strengthened by the realisation that the technical achievements of the Company have largely been covered over the years, and that the results of our labours are mainly here before you, I have attempted to liven up my modest canvas by going behind the scenes, and have sought to deal with ideas and the reasons for important decisions, rather. than to embark upon a purely descriptive essay.If then, you will bear with me, we shall skip back through the years to the days of struggle that our President's address has so aptly covered, and find that one man's ideas and faith stand out beyond all others. W. H. Corbould must always be credited with having founded the enterprise, for he correctly appraised the potential of the struggling prospect and foresaw what could be done, despite the handicaps of geography, climate and need for heavy expenditure.

THE object of this note is to set forth some particulars of the effect of light on cinnabar occurring in a deposit of this mineral at Puhipubi, in the North Auckland peninsula of New Zealand. This deposit is contained within a gently-inclined sheet of siliceous sinter forminga hillock called Mount Mitchell, and is particularly notable in that it is an instance of the simultaneous deposition of cinnabar and silica on a large scale. The mercury-bearing material varies in character from semi-porous sinter to dense translucent cbalcedony, of which the former is stained to various shades of pink, the latter to brilliant reds and vermilion. On exposure to daylight-and particularly to sunlight - these colours change to corresponding shades of translucent bluish-grey. As a direct result of this change the Mount Mitchell deposit remained unknown until some ten years ago, for, while prospectors early discovered cinnabar in the adjacent city and in a neighbouring stream bed, none of them recognized this mineral in the bluish chalcedony strewing portions of the surface of the Mount. The writer has carried out a series of experiments designed to indicate the cause and nature of this change, and to form a basis for the elaboration of more delicate experiments which would yield positive information. Circumstances, however, have so far combined to prevent the continuation of the research, and, as there seems little prospect of the writer being able to do more work on the subject, it seems well to publish the data so far obtained. Prior to describing this colour change, the writer would point out the desirability of restricting the meaning of the term cinnabar to the naturally occurring red sulphide of mercury; this would eliminate the ambiguities which arise from its indiscriminate application, in chemical literature, to both natural and artificial sulphides. Further the term cinnabarite having long since fallen into disuse, there appears to be no good reason for retaining the companionterm "metacinnabarite" when reduction to "metacinnabar" would preserve the meaning in a less clumsy word.

The earliest suggestions that some metallic ore deposits might have resulted from seafloor volcanic exhalation seem to have been those of Elie de Beaumont in 1847 and Henry de la Beche in 1851. In 1885 Tinoco, and Bouglise and Cumenge, independently investigating-.the manto copper deposits of the Boleo district of Baja California, proposed that these had formed on the seafloor by precipitation from "hydrothermal submarine emanations". Some twenty years later the Japanese geologists Kukuchi and Tsujimoto (1904) put forward the idea that the Kuroko ore- bodies were seafloor volcanic sinter deposits and in 1919 this was re-affirmed by Ohashi. In 1909 the English geologists Thomas and MacAllister postulated a similar origin for some of the gold deposits of Mount Morgan in Queensland. Between the wars the great European economic geologists Niggli and Schneiderhohn both clearly recognized a class of seafloor hydrothermal deposits. The idea rose again immediately after the Second World War in a very clear statement by Hegeman in 1948, which was followed by contributions by Ehrenberg and Kraume and their co-workers on the submarine volcanic origin of the Meggen and Rammelsberg orebodies in 1954 and 1955 respectively. In 1955 the present writer, quite unaware of early or contemporary work on volcanic exhalative ore deposits, proposed a volcanic sedimentary/diagenetic origin for the stratiform base metal ores of SE Australia. In doing so the writer emphasized the probable importance of island arc volcanism, suggested that some "metallogenetic regions" of ancient terrains were in fact old island arc systems, that the composition of the ores might be related to the composition of the associated volcanic rocks and that such ores would be tied to volcanic stratigraphy. Ideas on relations between volcanism and stratiform ore genesis have thus been evolving over.a period of some 140 years and, beginning with the observations on Baja California in 1882, work round the rim of the Pacific has made an important contribution over a period of more than 100 years.

In recent years, computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling of mechanically stirred flotation cells has been used to study the complexity of the flow within the cells. In CFD modelling, the flotation cell is discretised into individual finite volumes where local values of flow properties are calculated. The flotation effect is studied as three subprocesses including collision, attachment and detachment. In the present work, these subprocesses are modelled in a laboratory flotation cell. The flotation kinetics involving a population balance for particles in a semi-batch process has been developed. From turbulent collision models, the local rates of bubble-particle encounters have been estimated from the local turbulent velocities. The probabilities of collision, adhesion and stabilisation have been calculated at each location in the flotation cell. The net rate of attachment, after accounting for detachments, has been used in the kinetic model involving transient CFD simulations with removal of bubble-particle aggregates to the froth layer. Comparison of the predicted fraction of particles remaining in the cell and the fraction of free particles to the total number of particles remaining in the cell indicates that the particle recovery rate to the pulp-froth interface is much slower than the net attachment rates. For the case studied, the results indicate that the bubbles are loaded with particles quite quickly, and that the bubble surface area flux is the limiting factor in the recovery rate at the froth interface. This explains why the relationship between flotation rate and bubble surface area flux is generally used as a criterion for designing flotation cells. The predicted flotation rate constants also indicate that fine and large particles do not float as well as intermediate sized particles of 120 - 240 ¦m range. This is consistent with the flotation recovery generally observed in flotation practice. The magnitude of the flotation rate constants obtained by CFD modelling indicates that transport rates of the bubble-particle aggregates to the froth layer contribute quite significantly to the overall flotation rate and this is likely to be the case especially in plant-scale equipment.

In the early ages man contented himself with the use of such tools and appliances as would assist him in the enlightenment of his labours. With the advancement of science, numerous motives, with modifications and adaptations, have been introduced to enlighten labours, and in many cases have taken the place of man, but it can hardly be said that this applies to shovels, although one of the oldest implements of labour; certainly, with the introduction of the steam shovel the labours of man have been considerably reduced, but the hand shovel of today is used similarly to that of years ago.If the principle of the hand shovel has not been improved upon, it must not be suggested that the manufacturers of this article are not endeavouring to improve its quality, and the main point with which the manufacturers have to contend is the production of an article which will give a maximum of durability combined with a minimum of lightness. In order to accomplish this they must select suitable material, and subject it to such heat treatment process that will produce a shovel having a maximum of hardness and toughness without being unduly brittle, and which will withstand the excessive wear to which it is subjected.In this article an endeavour will be made to explain (a) the manufacture of shovels; (b) the defects commonly met with-the cause of same and measures which are necessary to remedy them.Before doing so a brief description will be given of the class of steel used for shovels; this is an important factor, and a steel which is admirably suitable is a plain carbon one containing approximately 55 - 70% C., and closely resembles that used for the manufacture of railway rails. This plain carbon steel is very extensively used, although at present alloy steels are being utilised to a certain extent for shovel manufacture, and with suitable heat-treatment.

This is the second of a series of papers dealing with Geology in Exploration. The first, published by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Proceedings Nos. 143-144, 1946, was written as an introduction to the subject and employed the exploration geology of the Cobar field to illustrate the prospect thinking. This paper will be concerned with the problem of ore repetition in depth and borrow its- example from the Mount Lyell copper field. The writing will be taken up altogether by the example. Nevertheless the intention remains to develop the subject in terms of its wide interest and application.The Mount Lyell field possesses large actual and prospective resources within, and in the vicinity of, the known deposits. This paper does not bear at all on these accessible ore reserves and tangible prospects. There is also in this area evidence of deep ore. The possibility is of little practical interest at present. But the picture of ore repetition, exemplified by the Mount Lyell field, does matter now to the outlook on exploration in this country. For once this essential feature of ore occurrence is widely understood there may develop, on the scale warranted, the search for major deposits which do not outcrop but which are still at shallow depths because of the part erosion plays in this story of concealment and exposure of ore. Also there is the chance in some fields (including Mount Lyell) of a second harvest of orebodies within mineable depths. This exploration goal, introduced in the first paper, will appear more clearly as the Geology in Exploration series is written up. Here the concern is to show the character of the geological evidence which points to the occurrence and recurrence of ore in the earth's crust, the picture at the foundation of this exploration scheme. The samples studied in this paper were derived from the iron oxide facies of iron formations (IFs) of the Quadrilßtero Ferrffero, south-eastern Brazil. The rich-iron oxide varieties of the IFs can be regarded as Fe-O systems because they consist predominantly of aggregates of haematite and magnetite crystals. The study was based on carefully selected samples in which magnetite crystals occur as isolated large crystals set in a matrix of haematite grains. Optical microscopy and an electron microscope equipped with an electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) system were used to investigate the microstructural and crystallographic relationships involved in the phase transformation between magnetite and haematite. The magnetite crystals in the IF samples are partially transformed to haematite and this process is also known as martitisation. This transformation occurs along the crystallographic planes {111} of the magnetite producing a characteristic triangular pattern of interlocking lamellae of transformed haematite crystals that are oriented parallel to octahedral plane {111}. This new generation of haematite is referred to martite because of the martitisation process. EBSD analyses show that the magnetite and the new haematite crystals, martite, share crystallographic planes of highest atomic density, eg {111} and (0001), respectively, possibly due to the ccp and hcp atomic arrangement of the two crystals. Stereographic projections of these two planes therefore coincide when the maxima of their poles are plotted. However, the crystallographic orientation of the haematite crystals in the matrix shows maxima of (0001) poles that do not coincide with those of {111} planes of magnetite. Consequently, it is concluded that the direct transformation to haematite crystals retains the crystallographic orientation memory of the former magnetite crystals, possibly due to the similar manner whereby their atoms are packed together in the crystal structures. On the other hand, no such relationships are observed between magnetite and haematite crystal in matrix. This suggests that haematite grains in the matrix may have been formed by other processes rather than those involved in the iron oxide transformation observed within the magnetite grains.

While water represents a major proportion of the mineral pulp processed in flotation circuits, relatively little research effort has been committed to understanding and controlling the influence of water quality on this process. Historically, this probably stems from the perception of water as an inert transport medium. However, the changing attitude towards water as a valuable resource, has given impetus to increasing requirements to use relatively impure make-up water supplies such as treated effluents and a high proportion of internally recycled water. In turn, this has resulted in the need for a more detailed focus on process water quality and its control to minimise adverse effects on sulfide flotation. Along these lines, prior to commissioning of a new concentrator at their Cadia Hill Gold Mine, Newcrest Mining was proactive in examining potential water sources and the influence of water quality on flotation of their copper/gold bearing ore. An extensive water quality survey of all major potential water supplies to the concentrator was undertaken. The flotation performance of the Cadia ore in each of these waters was investigated on a laboratory scale. The results of these studies identified that water quality could indeed have a significant influence on the flotation process. Since operations at the Cadia Hill concentrator began, water quality surveys of both make-up water sources and recycled flotation circuit waters have been carried out on a regular basis. By doing this, a database of water quality has been established which can be compared with plant performance. In parallel with the water quality surveys, a series of laboratory flotation tests have been conducted using a standard ore and waters from various streams to monitor changes in flotation performance as a function of water quality. These tests have indicated that certain water types may have a significant influence on plant performance. More research is required to better understand the impact of water quality on sulfide flotation. This understanding will help operators to minimise adverse effects, while maintaining the best utilisation of available water resources.

The ocean floor, often called the last frontier, is increasingly discussed in terms of its resource potential û from near shore building aggregate and placer deposits to massive sulfide orebodies in the deeper ocean. Consequently there is an increasing incentive to mine the seafloor. But, do we have the social license to explore and mine the seafloor? Does this nascent industry have support amongst the wider community? If not, why not? And what should be done? To answer some of these questions, the Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship has explored the social viability of an expanded seafloor exploration and mining (SEM) industry inAustralia. The results show that there are significant geological and environmental data gaps and that, in the absence of sufficient information, stakeholder reaction to the prospect of an SEM industry expansion may be reactionary and negative. This uncertainty means that the perception of risk from the industry is variable and often dependent on individual values. The acceptability of an expansion to the SEM industry is currently precarious, in particular due to the high levels of uncertainty regarding the environmental impacts of seafloor activity. While there are existing federal regulatory frameworks and government processes for the licensing of seafloor mineral exploration and extraction, there is little precedent in the application and implementation of these regulations. The future viability of the industry will be highly dependant on AustraliaÆs ability to improve the knowledge-base underpinning its regulatory regime and also to generate open and transparent communication channels between stakeholders. It will also be dependent on the SEM industryÆs ability to communicate an acceptable value proposition to society. This proposition will need to include the relative impacts of terrestrial and marine mining, the alternative potential uses of the ocean and the multi-use conflict that SEM might engender. This Is not a highly technical paper, but rather an attempt to give a general outline of coal mining for the benefit of those present who may have little or no experience in the industry, and is intended to give some general knowledge which may help to a better understanding of the problems of the industry. A knowledge of the disposition of workable material is necessary to give a comparison with other mining practices. Coal Is usually found in comparatively fiat seams of varying thickness, whereas other minerals are generally found in highly inclined lodes of variable width. However, even in comparatively flat seams unaffected by faulting, grades can, and do, vary greatly over short distances.This variation causes many local problems in working the small area affected. Even very steep seams, and some are much steeper than 1 in 1, vary considerably not only in grade, but also in direction of grade and level course. This is probably caused by folding during alteration of the shape and form of the basins after deposition.These swellies are common to most coal seams and vary only in extent. This type of variation in grade and direction of grade, while common to most ore bodies, is a matter of great importance in coal mining when it is considered that roadways are driven in the seam itself and have to be graded and made suitable for haulage purposes.The area of ground involved in an individual coal mining operation is often very large; many times larger than most metal mining propositions, and often comprises many thousands of acres.When it is considered that the specific gravity of coal may be only one-fifth of that of some ores mined, and the coal seam may be five or six feet in thickness, the vastness of the area necessary for continuous mining operations over many years will be realised.To achieve comparable outputs, with about five times the bulk of material to handle, much more ground and working places must...
