Rio Tinto’s Argyle Diamond Mine has a history of underperformance with delivery of ore from the underground operation to the surface for processing with no real clarity in sources of loss and value. In order to increase underground production performance, the basic concepts of the Theory of Constraints model were applied to the Argyle underground production system. This prompted a revised view on bottlenecks and contributors to value loss and ultimately leading to record breaking mine performance. System loss reporting to demonstrate the best opportunity to drive value, departmental detail to develop tools to identify improvement opportunities and clarity across the team to ensure alignment and clear lines of communication were critical to the project success.

With the current focus in the mining industry on reducing costs, while simultaneously improving ore quality, infrared spectroscopy is a tool that can potentially assist companies to meet both challenges. Changes in the nature of infrared spectra are strongly influenced by changes in mineralogy, which is a key input variable for exploration (geology and orebody modelling and ore characterisation) and mining (pit design, mine scheduling and processing plant design/management).Infrared spectroscopic logging of drill holes has been embedded as a standard tool in BHP Billiton Iron Ore exploration, with a process set up to automatically deliver mineralogy and associated imagery to the end users (typically exploration geologists). The availability of consistent and automated mineralogy drill hole logs across a project is improving the output quality and reducing re-work.BHP Billiton Iron Ore is now looking into using the same infrared spectroscopic data for other applications, including improving predictions of geometallurgical and geotechnical parameters. Trials show that addition of infrared spectroscopic data to conventional data sets (element analysis and depth information) is significantly improving the accuracy of regression models to predict the lump-fine ratio.Further initiatives around infrared spectroscopic data in BHP Billiton Iron Ore include the installation of infrared spectroscopic sensors over conveyor belts, infrared spectroscopic mine face scanning and infrared spectroscopic blasthole logging. The ultimate vision is to have consistent, seamless mineralogical data from infrared spectroscopic sensing available throughout the mineral value chain (exploration/mining/processing). This seamless infrared spectroscopic data ‘bridge’ will allow the transfer of knowledge between the different sections of the value chain (exploration, mining and processing). For example, ore handle-ability could be predicted on exploration samples using regression models built from processing plant observations. In the opposite direction, information gathered about the buried stratigraphy by infrared spectroscopy utilised during exploration, could be used to predict the stratigraphy encountered during mining. This collaboration across BHP Billiton Iron Ore is expected to deliver significant savings, while improving the quality of the final product, thus helping to drive efficiency over the next decade.CITATION:Haest, M, Mittrup, D and Dominguez, O, 2015. Many projects fail because project performance in unfavourable economic conditions was not anticipated at the investment decision stage. This type of failure may have been avoided through the selection of a strategy that enables the project to perform well under a range of possible future economic conditions (a ærobustÆ strategy); rather than an æoptimalÆ strategy for expected future conditions that will never eventuate. This paper describes a method of rapidly generating mine plans for a number of project strategies, and then evaluating it against a representative range of equally likely economic conditions. The key performance indicators derived for each strategy are the mean value and the distribution of values (variance). A prudent investor will identify prospective strategies not only on the merit of highest mean values (as a proxy for economic reward), but also on the probability of not meeting specified investment hurdles (a proxy for risk). A robust strategy will achieve its financial objective even under adverse economic variations. This paper focuses on the effect of commodity price uncertainty; particularly around the choice of mining and processing capacity levels. Results from enumerating 2000 prices scenarios against 63 strategy combinations show how processing and mining capacity can be manipulated to manage the risk-reward trade-off.

Blast designs can have productive and non-productive impacts on downstream stages, mine productivity and operating costs. On the other hand, ground vibration, fragmentation, and back break caused by blasting impose damage and financial penalties and which must be controlled by blast design. One of the significant variables in blast design is the burden. In this study, the potentials of artificial neural network are investigated in prediction of burden in the Sungun copper open-pit mine. Input data were assembled through 18 blasting blocks according to different levels and experimental geomechanical investigation. To construct the model blastability index, uniaxial compression strength, hole diameter, specific weight of rock, rock quality designation and cohesion strength are taken as input parameters, whereas, burden is considered as an output parameter. Mean square error was used as the performance function and back propagation algorithm as the training function, containing four hidden layers and 14 data sets. Four sets of data were used to make sure that correct training had been carried out. This produced the coefficient correlation of 0.662.

Mining plants and infrastructure, and the decisions made by their designers, can have large impacts on their environmental and social context, commonly referred to as the site or plant footprint. They can also be the source of constructive contributions to sustainable development when designers are enabled via the information, systems and tools to incorporate sustainability in engineering processes. A facility’s footprint and the project’s contribution to sustainability – economic, environmental and social aspects – are now key considerations in regulatory approval processes and are the fundamental drivers of support, or opposition, from the project’s stakeholders.Historically, plant and infrastructure designers have not been well integrated with the environmental and social professionals who are engaged to pursue regulatory approvals. Despite this, many objectives central to technical and process engineering have in fact contributed positively to a facility’s footprint and indeed its contribution to sustainable development. Examples of these objectives include increasing process and energy efficiency, and minimising the quantities of waste requiring disposal. With the framework of sustainability, mining plant and infrastructure designers are indeed at the forefront of incorporating sustainability into resource industry projects and are central to the process of obtaining regulatory approvals and ongoing stakeholder support. The process of incorporation starts with a shared understanding of sustainability and sustainable development, and continues with project processes that facilitate information and knowledge exchange throughout the project life cycle.CITATION:Murphy, A, 2014. Record iron ore prices and a renaissance of infrastructure in the Pilbara have Flinders Mines poised to move from explorer/developer to an iron ore producer. The potential of the company’s Pilbara Iron Ore Project was first highlighted by the announcement of Rio Tinto’s Caliwingina North deposit to the north and the Fortescue Metals group’s Serenity deposit in the southeast. The success of Flinders Mines’ exploration has been based on incorporating landscape studies into an existing geological framework, and using this to understand the iron-rich materials that were emplaced during the Tertiary. The development of the Delta and Eagle deposit resource models highlights this process. There are three main mineralisation styles at the project; detrital iron, channel iron and bedded iron deposits. They have textural and mineralogical similarities with comparative deposits in the region. Gaining an insight into the geological processes unique to detrital iron deposits and more distal channel iron deposits has been important to understanding the geometallurgy of the mineralisation. The model sits comfortably with other regional oregenesis models and allows a contextual framework to be developed around the timing of deposition of the Fe-rich detritus and pisolitic nodules that dominate the deposits. The exploration model also allows Flinders to explore more effectively for bedded iron mineralisation developed prior to, and since the development of the Tertiary weathering landscape.

The enrichment of magnetite to haematite and haematite-goethite leads to a coincident magnetic low and gravity high within the banded iron formation. Palaeochannel deposits of pisolitic limonite can be expected to provide a relative magnetic high and gravity low in a sinuous geometry. Detrital iron deposits of conglomerate, scree or ‘canga’ might have indistinct magnetic response but will usually have a relative gravity high.These signatures provide clear discriminators detectable by a joint gravity and magnetic survey.The combination of airborne gravity gradiometry and magnetometry is particularly powerful in detecting and discriminating targets, as well as mapping lithologies and structure, across a wide variety of iron ore deposit styles. It provides detection capabilities in a platform capable of rapid, complete coverage with minimal access issues. This approach has been used in FALCON™ airborne surveys for iron ore exploration in the Great Lakes, USA; the Middleback Ranges, South Australia; and the Hamersley Basin, Western Australia.The complex magnetic properties of iron formations (particularly remanence, anisotropy and depth of weathering) prevent this approach from being simple. The use of vector residual magnetic intensity (VRMI), calculated from the measured total magnetic intensity (TMI), assists by reducing the complexity due to the different directions of the remanent and induced magnetic fields.Estimations of the density to magnetisation ratio via the pseudo-lithology calculated from the VRMI and gravity gradients provide a useful method of capturing the discriminatory power of joint magnetic and gravity gradient data.

The development of Western Australian magnetite deposits has lead to the design of some of the largest grinding mills and plants in the world. One of the projects demonstrates the efficiency gains possible by developing a simple yet thorough test program for circuit design. By drawing on the experience of current magnetite operations in Australia and the Mesabi and Marquette iron ranges in the United States, a basic flowsheet was developed. Through comprehensive testwork with AG, ball and stirred milling the flowsheet was optimized to take full advantage of each grinding mill’s strengths to reach the required final grind size. Laboratory work was verified in the pilot plant to optimize the energy efficiency of each grinding step while ensuring adequate liberation at each step for sufficient gangue rejection. By using three stages of grinding, the ball mill can best be employed in ensuring all top size gangue material is liberated and removed in the second magnetic separation step. The inclusion of the IsaMill, with its inherent steep product size distribution, as the tertiary grinding stage ensured that maximum grade was achieved and simplified the downstream process while giving further improvements in total grinding capital and operating costs. In this way the combination of the two technologies downstream from the AG mill is far more efficient than either would be on its own by reducing the total installed power by 1/3 and annual grinding media cost by 2/3.

The Ernest Henry Iron Oxide Copper Gold deposit is hosted in a large dilation between two moderately dipping shear zones found in the footwall and hanging wall of the deposit. These shears are controlled by a large diorite intrusion to the north-east and south-west of the deposit, formed ~1660 Ma. A shear zone dubbed the ‘Interlens’ uncovered through underground workings truncates the main orebody into two lenses, and is hypothesized to have formed in conjunction with the Hanging Wall Shear Zone and Footwall Shear Zone. All three shears dip moderately to the SSE (50–140) from open cut exposures through to the current mining horizon approximately 800 m below the surface. Routine geological work and a capital drilling campaign has identified a significant flexure in these sub parallel ore bounding shears with increasing depth. A shift in shear orientation in the Interlens over approximately 100 m vertically from ~50° to the SSE to a steep, easterly trend (~85° to the east) is observed in both drill core and exposures in the underground workings. It is hypothesized the diorite intrusive to the south-west of the deposit controls the shear zone geometries at depth. The geometry of the Interlens mirrors the surface expression of the Proterozoic package of the orebounding shears to the south-west of the deposit, suggesting the surface geometries of the shear zones are consistent with depth. Additional drilling to explore the validity of this hypothesis is planned for the near future to better understand the structural controls on the Ernest Henry mineralisation with increasing depth.

A major Ventilation Upgrade Project commenced at the Fosterville Gold Mine (FGM) in 2017 to service the ongoing ventilation requirements of the underground mining operation. The project consists of three large diameter ventilation raises totalling 1100 metres, and new axial primary ventilation fans to upgrade the mine ventilation system. With a mining depth of 1200 metres and a thermal gradient of approximately 2.7 °C per 100 metres of depth, the completion of the Ventilation Upgrade Project is key to the ongoing success at FGM. The Ventilation Upgrade Project will allow continued mining, including high-grade gold deposits, lower in the mine where heat is increasing. Figure 1 below illustrates the underground workings at FGM, and provides a general view of the ventilation upgrade works to establish the new exhaust system from the lower workings to surface. Whilst raisebore pilot drilling the H4760 Return Air Rise (RAR) from surface to 395 metres, the raisebore drill string became stuck in the raisebore pilot hole at approximately 300 metres down hole, presenting a significant technical problem and delays to the project. This Case Study provides an overview of the recovery process undertaken at FGM including the recovery of the stuck drill string. The value of the stuck in-hole equipment, the investment in the shaft site preparation, the collar stabilisation, the underground development to the base of the ventilation raise, the surface footprint prepared for the Primary Fans construction and the limited available space on the site were all motivations to recover the raisebore drill sting and ultimately recover the ventilation raise location. More importantly, the long lead-time required should a new shaft location be the final solution, and the delay this would incur to the ventilation upgrade was unacceptable. Recovery of the drill string was not possible using the capability of the Contractor’s Raise Drill. An alternative method for freeing the drill string was required. A significant amount of engagement with industry was undertaken to seek out potential solutions and draw from the experience of others. All methodologies available were considered and assessed. Ultimately, after several attempts at freeing the raisebore drill string using various methodologies, Adams Drillers and Clear Cut Interventions were engaged to provide a turnkey recovery solution.

In addition to volatile commodity prices influencing decision making, in recent years, social and environmental performance have become important decision drivers within the mining industry. There are increased demands from stakeholders, communities, and governments to ensure that raw materials are mined, processed and refined responsibly. The industry also faces the challenge of better managing its waste, which has led to severe consequences when not done properly. The high commodity prices of the late 90s and early 2000s encouraged larger economies of scale and drove mining companies to extract large volumes of rock for separation and concentration at the downstream processes. Over time, as ore grades dropped, the cost of mining escalated and tailings volumes grew. This arduous process also caused strains on recovery cost and performance. Scarcity of water and energy resources coupled with increased production demands and higher operating costs are putting pressure on companies to find innovative ways to increase mining intensities. Hatch’s value chain optimisation methodologies, specifically Grade Engineering® and early waste rejection of the mine, have been of interest to intensify operational performance and minimise waste generation. Enabling preconcentration of the plant throughput, the methodology has significant potential to improve overall metal production and reduce water and energy intensities, whilst minimising wet tailings. Using representative data from real world mines, this paper reports on a case study that evaluates the impact of preconcentration using sensor-based ore sorting on downstream process improvements as well as energy, water and tailings reduction. Financial and economic viability of this technique is presented for both brownfield and greenfield implementation cases. The results show that business case for preconcentration is best when: the distribution of metal in the run of mine ore is negatively skewed and left tailed; mining costs are low; energy, water and tailings management costs are high; and low cost methods of recovering pay metal from low grade material are available.

Processing of large volumes of ultrafine ores has long challenged mineral processing operators because of lower recoveries and increased tailings. This has led to many deposits, or parts of existing deposits, being viewed as uneconomic. As the mining industry can no longer afford to overlook resources that require finer sizes to achieve liberation or result in high tailings losses, the need for technologies to address these issues has increased. Mineral Technologies (MT) worked with a prominent Australian iron ore producer over five years to implement an innovative gravity separation technology for the beneficiation of ultrafine magnetite. The magnetite mineralisation requires a liberation size of <40 μm and selective rejection of ultrafine silica prior to magnetic separation. Through collaboration with the client, MT applied their Lyons Feed Control Unit (LFCU) technology for the beneficiation of finely grained magnetite. LFCUs are widely used in the mineral sands and iron ore gravity plants, and in tailings applications, to recover water and provide constant high density process streams. This project was an extension of knowledge gained from these applications. Test work was conducted on-site, using 1 t/h pilot and 300 kg/hr laboratory scale units. This test work showed that the LFCUs could reject 20 per cent of feed mass to tails whilst recovering >94 per cent of Fe to product. This upgraded the feed from 53.7 per cent Fe and 19.7 per cent SiO2 to 63.8 per cent Fe and 8.8 per cent SiO2. Recovery by size data showed a minimum 88 per cent Fe recovery to product for <8 μm material and up to 98 per cent Fe recovery for the -38+25 μm fraction. The LFCU rejected 70 per cent of <25 μm SiO2. The information obtained from the test work was utilised in the design of the full-scale units which are due for installation at the project site in 2021. This paper outlines the results of this laboratory and pilot scale test work and how the data obtained was used to design the full-sized units.

Gekko Systems Pty Ltd have developed the Python Underground Processing Plant for the concentration of gold and sulfide ores. The Python plant has an established flow sheet including fine crushing, screening, gravity separation and flotation which aims to concentrate the valuable minerals (gold/sulfides). The aim of the plant is to achieve high valuable recovery into a mass yield of 10 - 30 per cent to reduce the amount of material that is needed to be taken to downstream processing. This paper examines the test work protocol for testing an ore to assess its suitability for the Python flow sheet. This paper will discuss the test methods employed to determine crushing requirements, continuous gravity recovery and flotation performance and how the results relate to Python design for the comminution, gravity and flotation circuits. Results from past test work will be discussed.

In less than a year, Atlas Iron’s Corunna Downs Project has moved from a new discovery to a substantial resource of high quality in an underexplored greenstone belt. Located approximately 170 km south-east of Port Hedland and 40 km south-west of Marble Bar, in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia, Atlas Iron Ltd (Atlas) has conducted extensive exploration work at Split Rock, Razorback, Runway and Shark Gully, consisting of geophysical surveying, field mapping, 464 reverse circulation and 16 diamond drill holes resulting in a current resource of 51 Mt at 57.3 per cent Fe (Atlas, 2014b).The Corunna Downs Project is interpreted to be hosted within the Cleaverville Formation of the Archaean Gorge Creek Group. Within the project area these rocks outcrop as subvertically dipping banded iron-formations (BIFs) and jaspilites, cherts, minor shales and meta-sediments forming a north–south trending plateau.Primary hematite-martite iron mineralisation is overprinted in the near surface environment by supergene goethite, and frequently capped with a thin laterite cover. The strongest enrichment areas have been discovered within topographic lows, proximal to fault zones, which coincide with a geophysical anolmaly. These characteristics were targeted, and the subsequent areas mapped in greater detail, allowing for efficient resource definition.Although first explored for iron in the late 1960s, it wasn’t until Atlas’ acquisition of the project in October 2012, that major strides were made to defining an economic resource. At present, Corunna Downs is Atlas’ best greenfields exploration discovery, both in terms of the potential scale of the resource and its blending capacity.The Corunna Downs prospect is emerging as a major new iron ore province in the Pilbara and includes 80 km of potential host stratigraphy. Corunna Downs sits strategically between Atlas’ Mt Webber and McPhee Creek tenements, and can play an important part in Atlas’ growth strategy as iron ore market conditions become more volatile and challenging.CITATION:Mainwaring, J H, Howard, P J and Darvall, P, 2015. OneSteel Whyalla’s grate-kiln-cooler pelletising plant was commissioned in 1968 processing haematite feed from the local South Middleback Ranges mining area. The existence of a magnetite resource beneath the haematite ore at Iron Duke had been known for some time. In 2004, a decision was made to covert the primary iron source for the Whyalla steelworks from haematite to magnetite – known as project magnet. The intent of the project was to convert the feed to the steelworks from haematite to magnetite and to free up the remaining haematite resource for export. The pelletising plant was cut over to a magnetite feed in 2007.The thermochemical differences of magnetite compared to haematite are threefold:1. the introduction of an exothermic reaction during conversion of magnetite to haematite,2. the absence of bound water which existed within the haematite, and3. lower gangue content requiring lower fluxing levels and therefore lower calcination energy demand.The combination of these differences results in a significantly different induration requirement for magnetite as compared to haematite. The change therefore required extensive research and test work to design modifications to the furnace and to ensure appropriate risk mitigation for the Whyalla steelworks.Preliminary pot-grate test work was performed to define the pellet chemistry and confirm the suitability of the magnetite to produce pellets suitable for the OneSteel blast furnace. A heating curve was developed by use of computer-based heat and mass balance modelling. Extensive pilot scale grate-kiln-cooler test work was then performed to confirm the heating curve and to verify and fine-tune the pellet properties. Computation fluid dynamics was used to design the physical changes to the furnace required to achieve the proposed heating curve.Following installation of an additional preheat zone, including a wall and dilution air fans, into the preheating furnace, and installation of an additional wall into the cooler, the modified furnace was commissioning in December 2007. The plant performed as expected during commissioning with the actual heating curve matching the proposed curve and the produced pellets within blast furnace specifications.

The term geometallurgy (or geometallurgical) first appeared in the literature some 40 years ago and has a wide range of definitions and perspectives which increases the barriers of communication between practitioners and across functional groups and management levels within organisations. However the consistent theme running through the diversity of definitions and perspectives is the requirement for close collaboration between the relevant disciplines. This concept of geometallurgy arguably goes back to the earliest days of the exploitation of mineral deposits, through the mid-1500s to the beginning of the 20th century.This holistic and integrated view was diminished during the 20th century due to a number of factors which included the commencement and continuing upward trend of large-scale mining and the expansion in production, the rise of scientific and classical management theories and methodologies, increase in specialisation and the development of traditional project planning. The re-emergence of geometallurgy in the late 20th century required the relevant functional units and disciplines to collaborate as a team. This necessitates a common understanding that the geometallurgical program’s goals must be obtained, which requires clear and consistent communication, particularly with the modern trend of virtual teams.A multi-dimensional construct is proposed to assist in providing a consistent approach in the communication of the context and purpose of both general and specific geometallurgical programs, thus simplifying communication. This geometallurgical construct consists of the dimensions of process span, response knowledge, variability knowledge, spatial knowledge, application and project phase in relation to extraction process(es) applied to geological materials from a mineral deposit. These dimensions are then linked to the phase of mineral project development in which the geometallurgical program is being applied, which ranges from advanced exploration through to operational execution. This paper outlines the multi-dimensional construct with examples of how the context, purpose and scope of geometallurgical programs can be clearly delineated and communicated.

The Meekatharra mining district lies in the northern pan of the Murchison Province of the Archaean Ynlgam block of Western Australia. Since dis- covery of the Paddy&apos;s Flat belt in the district in 1897 total gold production has been 67 tonnes and a further 33 tonnes in resources have been defined by drilling. The Paddy&apos;s Flat gold deposits occur within the Gabanintha Formation, a basal formation of the Murchison greenstone sequence containing komatiitic basalts, ultramafics and minor banded iron formations. The regional control on the distribution of deposits is an anastomosing shear belt which extends over 350 km and incorporates the Mt Magnet, Reedys and Meekatharra deposits. The following gold deposit styles may be recognized based on lithological association and alteration: Albite porphyry hosted, Carbonate-fuchsite- quartz alteration hosted deposits, Banded Iron Formation hosted sulphide replacement gold deposits and quartz vein deposits. With the exception of the banded iron formation hosted deposits, the Paddy&apos;s Flat alteration zone shows strong similarities to the alteration styles at Kerr-Addison (Ontario).

The occurrence of fluorine in the copper/gold concentrates produced by Ok Tedi Mining Limited has provided a series of challenges to metallurgists since 1988. Although fluorine is distributed throughout the gangue minerals contained within Ok Tedi ores, itsÆ presence in talc and phlogopite (naturally floating fluorosilicates) has proven to be the predominate sources of fluorine in the final concentrate. Initial treatment for the fluorosilicates consisted of the use of a carboxy-methyl cellulose depressant added to the flotation cleaners. This was superceded in 1998 with the installation of a fluorine reverse flotation process for the removal of naturally floating fluorosilicates from the final concentrate when the fluorine content of the final concentrate exceeds smelter-defined trigger points. The fluorine reverse process is similar to by-product molybdenite concentrate production in that sodium hydrosulfide is used to depress copper/gold flotation whilst allowing the fluorosilicates to float. The process was installed in two parallel modules (to match the existing grinding/flotation modules at Ok Tedi), each consisting of a closed rougher/cleaner circuit configuration. Both rougher and cleaner cells are Jameson Cells from MIM Process Technologies, with the selection based on both processing characteristics and available construction space. This paper discusses both the nature of fluorine in-, and its removal from-, Ok Tedi copper/gold concentrates.

Prefabricated waterproofing sheet membranes are extremely complicated to install in underground sections with complex geometries and, despite being already subjected to quality tests in the factory, the installed membrane often exhibits leakages due to different reasons. Main sources of leaks are the required high amount of welding seams and damages caused during installation of reinforcement, as well as overstretching and poorly installed secondary concrete linings. Also the design of the tunnel lining is strongly influenced and limited by the use of prefabricated waterproofing sheet membranes. The use of sprayed waterproofing membranes for more than a decade has contributed to durability and serviceability, as well as to increasing sustainability of tunnel linings. The presented sprayed waterproofing membrane MasterSeal 345 is an advantageous alternative to prefabricated waterproofing sheet membranes under typical tunnelling conditions, especially in geometrically complex areas, such as in lay-by niches, cross passages and crossover caverns, where installation of conventional waterproofing membranes is inherently difficult, and locating leaks is challenging. This membrane has been successfully used in underground projects with different waterproofing design concepts and under diverse hydro-geological and environmental conditions for over a decade. It provides tunnel designers with different options and optimisation for the design of the tunnel concrete lining. Additional advantages to owners, contractors and designers from the use of the sprayed membrane include flexibility in the design, increased productivity and flexibility in working programming, as well as improved logistics, resulting in significant program and cost savings and reduced long-term maintenance costs. This paper describes the key features of this sprayed waterproofing membrane, its application range and limitations, the waterproofing concept, design options and related benefits. Redpath Australia is using a unique mining method for the Australian underground coal industry at Kestrel Mine Extension in the Bowen Basin, Central Queensland.The project involves completing two separate drifts from the surface for access to the German Creek Coal Seam located approximately 230 m below the existing surface. The scope of work is primarily the construction of two drifts; the first is 1577 m at 1 in 6 gradient and the second 1874 m at 1 in 8 gradient. Each drift has been developed by a Mitsui S200 roadheader with modifications to allow for a continuous tunnelling/mining cycle operation. A shotcrete boom has been fitted to the left hand side of the machine with the operators console located at ground level. Another operators console is elevated on the right hand side of the machine to allow operation of the rotary drill boom which is mounted on a slide rail to allow flexibility of positioning depending on the stage of the cycle. In support of the roadheader activities, an integrated conveyor system mounted on a sliding floor arrangement is able to be advanced as the mining face progresses. This sliding floor consists of four 1.5 m × 6 m sections that utilise hydraulic rams to ‘walk’ inbye, allowing room for installation of precast concrete floor panels for final floor completion. This method borrows from the tunnelling and construction industries to eliminate place-change delays in the mining cycle by enabling complete ground support installation without retreat of the primary development machine from the face. The aim is to reduce the project duration with the completion of final floor and services to within 30 m of the operating face as it advances.
