As we strive for a sustainable and resilient future, repurposing assets has become a top priority. In Australia alone, we have a significant number of mineral projects in the pipeline, extensive existing operations, and over 50 000 legacy sites. Collectively, this presents a unique opportunity to be a world leader in mine rehabilitation. Complex stakeholder landscapes, inflexible policies, aged regulatory frameworks, technical uncertainties and increasing liabilities are all barriers hindering effective transition of legacy assets. The impetus for change is further catalysed by shifting consumer preferences, workforces in flux and regional Australians questioning what the transition means for their local community. We need innovative approaches to take a leading role in the industry and support global efforts more broadly. Co-designing an ambitious, shared vision spanning projects, operations and legacy assets with all key parties is a fundamental step to unlock and realise maximum societal, environmental, economic and reputational value. Serious play and gamification can further enhance this visioning process.

Safe work Australia (SWA) has a number of proposed amendments to existing Workplace Exposure Standard (WES) values that may dramatically change how mining workplaces using personal gas monitoring instruments will operate. In consultation with leading gas monitor manufacturers and distributors, an assessment of common Australian alarm settings values and analysis of potential frequency of increased alarm likelihoods has been conducted. This assessment explores the relationships between current monitoring practices, using instruments as health and not just safety tools and identify what will be needed to minimise worker ‘alarm fatigue’ and for common tasks to continue safely. This paper provides the necessary information to aid industry and hygienists to be ‘future ready’ given the likely impact that order of magnitude reductions in time weighted average (TWA) values for NO2, SO2, H2S and other common gases will have on current working practices. Reductions to gas alarm values will provide significant challenges to existing work methods and will require, practical application of the pending future values. Improvements and awareness of instrument capabilities by safety and hygiene professionals will better utilise gas monitors real-time data monitoring capacity and no longer be just ‘safe or not-safe’ instruments. The presentation seeks to promote the practical steps required in setting alarms based on risk consequence and likelihood, increase general awareness of the tools and data available in modern instruments and will enable industry professionals to better manage the challenges of any potential future changes.

Rio Tinto has actively committed to progressive reclamation, concurrent with commercial operations, at its Diavik Diamond Mine. The most significant piece of progressive reclamation undertaken at Diavik to date has been the construction of an engineered thermal rock cover for the mine’s largest waste rock storage area. This 80-metre-tall and 2000-metre-long area is known as the Waste Rock Storage Area – North Country Rock Pile (WRSA-NCRP) and contains the operationally segregated potentially acid-generating waste rock mined over the last 20 years. As part of the mine plan, an opportunity was recognised where a limited 1.5 per cent of the WRSANCRP surface area was required for storage of the balance of life-of-mine generated waste rock and a decision was made to advance the closure design almost a decade ahead of final closure. With over 12 860 000 tonnes of material placed and 57 443 dozer hours logged since cover construction, progressive reclamation on the WRSA-NCRP is scheduled to be complete in mid-2023, three years before planned cessation of commercial operations in 2026. The progressive closure of the WRSA-NCRP demonstrates Rio Tinto’s commitment to not only closure, but modern best practices with integrated mine closure. Over the past seven years, Diavik has overcome multiple implementation hurdles for this project including the psychology of operational standby, the financial mechanisms required to support closure, working within the constraints of a mine plan and the associated operational organisational structures. This paper outlines the lessons learned to provide an example of successful integrated mine planning for closure. The North Country Rock Pile project had three major learnings which resulted in an effective organisational structure that allowed for the execution of an integrated planning model for progressive closure. The initial hurdle the project faced was adapting the psychology of an operational open pit mining team. The team was an experienced mining group who came in with the perspective to target the shortest haul possible resulting in the initial perception that the longer haul of material to the NCRP was an un-necessary task impacting operational performance metrics. After the installation of an improved dispatch tracking system and performance metrics, it was possible to demonstrate that the mine was shovel constrained. This showcased the short haul was generating an increase in queue time not production. With updated performance metrics, the team was aligned to target a decrease standby through haulage to the NCRP. These performance metrics had to be reinforced by financial mechanisms. The operations team was able to offset costs by charging time to the capital project set-up for the closure of the NCRP. This allowed the operations team to receive credit for time that would have otherwise likely been standby. As well, the progressive closure project was able to receive the benefit of not having to incur costs for the drill, blast and load as that was done as part of the operation. This was a significant benefit to the project and one of the primary drivers for the early approvals of the work as the project costs were limited to the incremental haulage distance and placement of the material. Life of Mine Conference 2023 | Brisbane, Australia | 2–4 August 2023 114 While the combined operational and progressive closure approach provided financial advantages, it did result in the project being constrained by the operational activities. A traditional capital project is managed through a linear execution plan where the deliverables within a project are within the realm of control of the project execution team. However, the NCRP project had to be continuously adapted to the outcomes of the pit operations. This included geotechnical constraints, ore delivery, and other operational delays. To adapt, the planning module had to be dynamic but not reactive to allow for adjustments on a shift-by-shift basis. Based on this requirement the Diavik Closure Projects structure adopted a mine planning format. The team executed a similar planning timeline and reporting structure as the mine operations team, allowing planning to be integrated into the operational planning structures on a daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly basis. This resulted in the Projects team as a core pillar of the mine planning team. The process of continuous improvement spanned six years and has resulted in the project being ahead of schedule and under budget for the project’s scheduled progressive closure completion date of June 2023. The North Country Rock Pile project supports the argument that bulk earthworks progressive closure projects should be integrated into the operational mine plan. If the project is aligned the mine plan it allows for dynamic adjustments which capitalise on evolving opportunities inevitable in an operating mine. These cultural and organisational alignments should be supported by appropriate performance metrics and financial mechanisms to ensure united priorities. The result of this alignment provides long-term financial savings for the business as well as delivery of closure objectives.

Over the decades, Redpath has undertaken a multitude of tunnelling and underground excavation projects for civil and mining clients both domestically and internationally. These projects have been undertaken through varying strata conditions with differing excavation methods in remote locations and in central business districts.With the recent turbulent nature of the global financial environment, project drivers have been challenged with the emphasis being placed on methods to gain early access to orebodies, rapid development techniques, lower capital costs and reduced labour requirements to name a few.A number of mining companies seeking to achieve these objectives have commenced the journey to better understand the operational constraints, challenges and opportunities that may be available with the use of alternative excavation methods.The development of safe and effective alternative excavation methods that comply with both domestic and international mining legislation and regulatory requirements is a challenge the industry needs to embrace. Given the current cost pressures being faced by the Australian mining industry, some alternative excavation methods offer the potential for longer term sustainability and rapid development of resources.More recently work has been undertaken on a project that challenged the norm and implemented an alternative excavation method with the use of an excavator with a rotating drum cutter head.This paper will review this recent project and provide technical and operational insight into some of the challenges faced in implementing an alternative excavation method in the metalliferous industry.CITATION:Donnelly, C, Ramage, G and Burke, R, 2014. Benchmark practices in the mining industry include the establishment of Quality Programs — Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC) — to monitor the correct execution of sampling protocols and control each stage of the ‘Sample Cycle’: Sample Collection, Preparation (comminution) and Analysis. QAQC reports commonly include statistical-numerical results that quantify performance of QAQC controls (field duplicates, preparation duplicates, blanks, standards etc). Graphics such as scatter plots, QQ plots, histograms and cumulative frequencies are used to represent the results. Statistical values including relative difference, absolute difference, relative variance, averages, T-test, and Zscores are used to quantitatively express the relationship between duplicate pairs ... but is an effective quality program just a statistical exercise? This paper aims to highlight the concept of ‘Quality Management’ (QM) as the precursor of continuous monitoring (ideally in real time) of QAQC results on Exploration, Production, Processing and Port samples, determined by trend analysis performed on a time and/or grades basis. Currently, there is a paradigm in the process of quality assurance that if individual data points fall within a predetermined acceptance limit then they are ‘acceptable’ and therefore suitable for informing operational and investment decisions. However, what is stated with respect to QM is that sometimes results found within the acceptance limits can indeed be internally biased, or show material deviations over a period of time, thereby impacting reconciliation results and/or potentially creating discrepancies with the final buyers. QM refers to the proactive detection of these ‘anomalous tendencies’, the approach and communication with the source of the information, the understanding of the reasons that cause the deficiencies, and the generation of agreed action plans to remediate the situation and ensure the consistency of results, in other words: continuous improvement on proactive manners.

The goal of this project has been to digitise and use drill parameter data from rotary drilling (measurement while drilling; MWD) for a more effective planning of the blasting process in surface mines. A more accurate and reliable digital drilling and automatic hardness identification technology was developed, which includes both a hardware and software system. In the aspect of hardware, we designed a positioning, navigation and hardness perception terminal system which consists of a global positioning system original equipment manufacturer board, programmable logic controller and sensors of measuring major parameters, and a wireless data transmission system which combines digital blasting platform and wireless transmission facilities. In the aspect of software, we developed the navigation software of locating blastholes using LabVIEW and C++, and the blasthole design software using AutoCAD ActiveX (C#) technologies. Cadia East Mining operations have employed geometallurgical techniques to advance the understanding of the in situ rock hardness variability across existing Panel Caves (PC). Geometallurgy advances the understanding of variability across an orebody through the integration of geology, mineralogy and processing response and therefore enhances spatial mapping of comminution or separation properties. Spatially extensive geometallurgical measurements are necessary so that continuous rock properties can be generated and used for the development of comminution and processing domains using geostatistical modelling. Standard testing protocol across geological and mineralogical domains is vital to understand the variability in deposit wide comminution and separation properties. The high cost and large sample requirements associated with metallurgical test work typically results in insufficient data density and distribution, making it difficult to model and map deposit scale variability. Quantitative hardness proxy tools are useful to measure in situ rock hardness, however this data is typically either sparse or missing within advanced mining operations. In recent years, mineralogy and multi-element assay data has often been collected as part of the standard geological data set and is generally coincident with metallurgical test work. In this paper relationships between mineralogy and comminution parameters have been applied to multi-element assay data with coincident measured Bond Work Index (BWi) data to generate a predicted BWi using linear regression. The predicted BWi is intended to supplement existing measured BWi data to enable better extrapolation across the deposit. Geostatistical Conditional Simulation methods have then used the predicted and measured BWi data to produce a BWi variable as a new input to the resource model. The simulated BWi can be used as an input for specific energy models to predict required grinding energy consumption across a deposit.

The Mabilo copper-gold-magnetite skarn deposit is located in southern Luzon in the Paracale mineral district, where iron has been produced historically from several skarn deposits. Mabilo occurs in the south-west of the district and is distinct and significant because of its high grades of copper and gold compared to historical mines.The Mabilo licence surrounds the Venida prospect, where past small-scale mining has exploited iron, copper and gold mineralisation in oxidised skarn. A ground magnetic survey in 2007 defined a number of strong anomalies under Quaternary volcanic cover south of Venida. The property was acquired by Sierra Mining Ltd in 2011, the magnetic data were remodelled and drilling commenced in September 2012. Diamond drill hole MDH001 targeted the strongest anomaly, which was 500 m south of Venida and under 20 m of volcanic cover. It intersected 94 m with an average grade of 2.2 per cent copper, 1.6 g/t gold and 36.6 per cent iron. Subsequent drilling was targeted by magnetic modelling, incorporating magnetic susceptibility data from drill core, which resulted in a high percentage of successful drill holes.The mineralised skarn preferentially replaces a dipping limestone unit within an Eocene sequence dominated by volcanic siltstone and sandstone, metamorphosed to marble and hornfels in the aureole of a Miocene quartz-diorite intrusion. Skarn occurs discontinuously along the eastern and southern diorite contact, controlled by primary sedimentary facies variation, structural geometry, fault offsets and intrusive contacts.Coarse magnetite skarn with garnet and minor wollastonite and clinopyroxene contains variably abundant chalcopyrite and minor molybdenite. Magnetite skarn occurs in sharp contact with unaltered marble or grades into garnet skarn with minor chalcopyrite. Structurally controlled retrograde skarn alteration is strong to intense and is characterised by bornite, clinozoisite, iron carbonate and chlorite. The retrograde skarn is weakly overprinted by late-stage pyrite veining and brecciation associated with clay-silica alteration with arsenopyrite and tetrahedrite-tennantite.The quartz-diorite stock is interpreted as the source of the prograde skarn-forming and mineralising fluids. Late-stage porphyritic intrusions in the contact zone indicate continuing magmatism during uplift, when telescoping led to a high-level, high-sulfidation overprint. The aim of a transportation system in an underground mine is to move the rock masses from one location to another in the most preferable manner by minimising the long and short-term operational costs. A continuous improvement of material transportation systems used in mines generates a need for continuous investigation of the current and new underground transportation systems. In an underground mine, an orepass is a common system used to transfer the material to the lower levels. If this system loses the ability to transport or store the necessary material capacities, it would result in production disturbances. In this paper, discrete event simulation (DES) was utilised to analyse the material inflow and outflow of the orepass systems when subjected to the different conditions. The study presented in this paper is based on the Malmberget mine, the second largest underground sublevel caving (SLC) iron ore operation in the world.

When an iron orebody nears its end of life, the extracted material can become increasingly problematic to handle. Higher moisture content occurs as larger portions of originally-below-water-table material is mined, which in some deposits is accompanied by further changes in physical and/or chemical properties present along the edges of the orebody. Plant delays related to problematic material have affected all of BHP’s mining hubs to various degrees. Following the recent successful work in Yandi, where the development of an index to quantify the handleability of channel iron ore deposits resulted in an increase in extracted volumes and an extension to the expected life-of-mine, the value of implementing similar indices for bedrock iron ore deposits has been recognised. A materials handling index has been developed by combining observed empirical relationships between material properties and processing plant performance. Indices for each deposit were further refined and optimised by implementing a back-testing strategy which facilitated an understanding of what weighting or scaling each of the contributing components should carry to yield the highest success rate of predicting actual delays at a given plant. Currently materials handling indices are deployed to all mine sites and are made available in block models as well as calculated for individual blasthole and production samples. Values in block models are obtained by predicting the required properties using machine learning models, whereas hyperspectral data is used to ‘measure’ some of those properties on a sample level. This paper discusses the work that has been undertaken to obtain materials handling indices, the testing that has been done to optimise them, and what processes have been developed to ensure the best metrics are being used in the different planning and scheduling horizons to optimise extraction.

TATA Steel’s R&D Division at Jamshedpur has developed a slime beneficiation process to recover iron values from iron ore slime. This process recovers iron ore concentrate containing 2.2 per cent alumina from a feed containing 7–10 per cent alumina. The reject generated from beneficiation of iron ore slime is treated as waste as the iron content in the reject is below 45 per cent. Effective utilisation of this waste is required for making the iron ore slime beneficiation process a zero-waste technology. In this connection several studies were made towards utilisation of slime waste. One of these studies revealed that slime waste can be used as a soil conditioner. Slime waste contains particles of size less than 10 micron and when these particles are mixed with soil in definite proportions, the porosity and the permeability of the mixture goes down. As a result, the water holding capacity (WHC) improves. This concept was evaluated through a series of tests at greenhouse level to optimise the soil to slime ratio. Finally, a pilot scale field trial was carried out over a period of three months using paddy rice as the crop. Three separate plots with compositions of: soil + organic matter comprising Farmyard Manure (FYM), (ii) soil and slime waste (2:1) + organic matter (FYM), and (iii) soil and slime waste (2:1) + organic matter (FYM) + Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium (NPK) fertiliser were used for the pilot trial. The results showed a 20 per cent increase in the productivity of paddy rice for plot (ii) as compared to plot (i). This was due to the beneficial effect of slime waste in the soil. The addition of inorganic fertiliser such as NPK in the ratio of (4:2:1) further enhanced the productivity of paddy rice.

Subsidence prediction methods can be divided into two basic types: empirical and analytical. Empirical methods are based largely on a combination of experience, intuition and observations from a large number of observed subsidence data. They are simple in their application, but they are not based on any principle of mechanics. Analytical methods are based on equivalent material modelling principles, where the ground surrounding the extraction is mathematically represented by idealised materials that deform according to the principles of continuum mechanics. Wide applicability and improved understanding are the principal advantages claimed for this approach. In NSW, significant progress has been achieved in the area of subsidence prediction during the last ten years. Empirical prediction curves are available in NSW for predicting the ground movement in the Southern and Newcastle Coalfields. A' comparison of subsidence values predicted from these curves with the actual monitored values indicates that the curves are adequate for use in conjunction with the existing damage assessment methods. Future research for improving the existing empirical prediction curves can only be justified if it is cost effective. There are several numerical models currently in use in NSW for predicting subsidence. The models do not appear to be superior in their ability to predict subsidence when compared with the empirical curves. the performance of these models will no doubt improve along with advances in defining strata properties and failure mechanisms.

"BHP Billiton (BHPB) West Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) conducts an extensive geometallurgy (geomet) program for its iron ore deposits in the Pilbara. The geomet program provides accurate information to infrastructure engineers, resource geologists, mine planning engineers and the technical marketing team on the performance characteristics of iron ores. Performance metrics include production planning, such as lump/fine splits, processing capability such as the level of ultra-fine iron ore and ironmaking blast furnace properties including tumble index (TI) and reduction disintegration index (RDI). Prior to the introduction of the current geomet program in WAIO, basic geometallurgical information was provided at the deposit level, such as deposit lump percentage and head grade chemistry. As the business value of geometallurgy was realised during the growth period of WAIO, the geomet process was reviewed and formalised into five steps: geomet drill planning laboratory measurement data management algorithm development block estimation.The geomet laboratory process produces simulated iron ore products from drill core, which are then subjected to physical geometallurgy test work. With the large amount of geometallurgy data collected, extensive databases are utilised to collate and organise the data to improve its usability within the business. Algorithms are created from the data to predict important geomet variables and a block estimation method is used to estimate geometallurgical properties into resource models. The predicted geometallurgy data is regularly reviewed at the different steps against plant and shipping data to allow refinement of the geometallurgy algorithms. It is also recognised that geomet data can be used to optimise the operations in existing processing hubs for improved production rate. The rapid industrialisation in China has consumed large amounts of various industrial raw materials, which has left behind large quantities of industrial solid wastes produced from the processes of mining, mineral processing and smelting. The storage of huge quantities of industrial solid wastes is an obvious risk to the environment and human well-being. As the first step to fully appreciate the scale of this risk, it is necessary to carry out research for developing a pollution source environmental risk assessment system (PSERAS), especially for the typical staple industrial solid waste (TSISW). This paper aims to discuss the frame of the PSERAS for TSISW for large scale production. This system consists of two aspects: predicted factors and accidental ones, which involve physical, chemical and biological risk assessments, on-site and during transportation process. Two analysis methods, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy logic assessment (FLA) were used to handle the complexity of environment and non-quantitative data. The risk assessment system for such a complex objective is difficult and the assessment of relative factors is problematic through the usual quantitative analysis. With the proposed PSERAS, it is possible to define the risk class of pollution sources. Furthermore, the risk assessment results will be helpful to the decision-maker, especially when facing unknown risks in the environmental management of industrial solid wastes. It is often said in business that if you donÆt have a customer you donÆt have a business. The same rule applies to project evaluation; if you donÆt have customers you really donÆt have a viable project. It is therefore essential that in the early stages of project evaluation the following fundamental questions are addressed: What products will this project produce? Who are the potential customers? What are the customersÆ requirements with respect to grade and impurities? Do they have adequate capacity to take the production from the proposed project? Will the products introduce adverse effects in the customerÆs process circuits? Will additional waste streams requiring disposal be produced? In the past the attitude has been along the lines of the customer will take whatever we produce at the mine site. Times have now changed with customers now operating under much tighter environmental regulation with waste disposal becoming increasingly difficult. It would therefore be prudent that the principles of product stewardship be used as a tool in project evaluation. This paper will provide a general discussion on customer requirements and provide detail on case studies of the impact of mine products on smelter process circuits. It will provide examples where there were synergies between the mine product and the smelter circuit and where the mine product had adverse impacts on smelter performance.

AustraliaÆs current interest in renewable energy is based on a desire to reduce the countryÆs greenhouse gas emissions. Wood from sustainable sources offers a unique opportunity to combine greenhouse gas benefits with other significant environmental and social benefits, including salinity mitigation, carbon sequestration, soil replenishment and rural industry. The challenge is to make renewable energy from wood in a cost competitive manner, so that this broad range of benefits may be best realised. Bioenergy and carbon products are of great interest as new, commercial forestry products that can drive large-scale environmental tree planting:In Western Australia, Enecon has worked with Western Power Corporation to build the first full-scale plant for integrated processing of mallee eucalypts, to produce activated carbon, renewable power and eucalyptus oil. It is intended that this plant is the first of a number of such plants to help catalyse environmental tree planting in Western Australia. New technologies being developed overseas may provide competitive bioenergy in areas where traditional markets for wood do not exist. For example, pyrolysis converts wood into a bio-oil that may be transported to remote sites for power generation in gas turbines. Pyrolysis also produces wood char. Pyrolysis and wood-to-ethanol technologies, coupled with short rotation coppicing trees, offer the long-term prospect of large-scale production of renewable fuels around the country.

I propose to speak today about our mineral heritage. In common usage "heritage" refers to the past. It means the discoveries, the developments, the mines and the processing plants, the benefits, the consequences, and the human experiences flowing from these. The history of the industry, inseparable from the history of the countries in which The Institute operates, is a rich background of which we can all be proud.But there is also a much wider meaning to mineral heritage. Our past has left us with the ab\lity to create and operate world scale enterprises generating wealth for the community, the ability to offer satisfying and challenging careers in a wide range of skills to our young people, and the willingness to follow adventurous and challenging vocations in remote areas, away from the big cities, at a time when the mentality of many is to get the most for the least effort and at the least inconvenience to themselves. The industry continues to be the repository of the pioneer spirit and a vital contributor to improving the life of the people in our countries.Thus, while our mineral heritage has much to do with the past, an essential part of it is how we use this rich past to build and shape our future. It is in this broader context that I am speaking today.

Corporate governance has never been more topical. A glance at any major newspaper or business publication will reveal a litany of corporate failures based upon the governance of the organisations involved (eg Byrne, 2002; Hayes, 2002; The Economist, 2002). The increased compliance requirements and speculative nature of our industry means that corporate governance systems are, if anything, more important than in the general business community (Arthur, 2001). Rather than focus exclusively on the contribution of governance to corporate failure within the mining industry, however, our objective in this paper is to examine how boards can add value to the corporations that they govern. In order to highlight how a board can add value to a company, we commence by outlining the role of the board in the modern corporation in general and the mining industry in particular. We then introduce the concept of shareholder value and identify the steps on which a board needs to focus to enhance shareholder value through value tracking processes. Our discussion pays particular attention to the importance of organisational culture to the companyÆs activities and utilises three case studies from the mining industry. We conclude with an overview of what mining boards can do to enhance their culture and drive performance changes for the benefit of the companies they govern.

Electrochemical polarisation techniques can be successively applied to maintain clean surfaces in process environments. The applications are the result of extensive knowledge of the electrochemical nature of process environments, an innovative approach to problem solving and shared æcan doÆ attitudes between the supplier and process owner. Initial identification of suitable applications is based on over 20 years of process and electrochemical experience. The technologies discussed in this paper include Electrochemical Anti-Scaling [EAS], Electrochemical Protection Systems with both anodic [EPSA] and cathodic [EPSC] protection and Electrochemical Flocculation [EF]. Examples of industrial applications are reviewed. Good examples of metallurgical processes which can benefit greatly from an advanced electrochemical treatment are the wet processes involving precipitation, crystallisation and evaporation. Eliminating corrosion and scaling which would otherwise cause process disruptions and quality problems can make a big difference in process profitability. Clear advantages in both cost efficiency and environment friendliness are easily demonstrated. Continuous processing with minimum downtime is one clear advantage. In comparison to the use of corrosion inhibitors, anti-scaling agents and flocculants, the electrochemical polarisation does not increase the environmental load from the process as no additives of any kind are used. In most cases the cost benefits from pro-actively keeping surfaces clean with the help of advanced electrochemistry are substantial when compared to traditional re-active methods and other active treatments.

Current classification of resources is entirely a subjective task. The various international reporting codes (such as the JORC Code) provide Competent Persons and practitioners with little specific guidance on the standard of work and levels of uncertainty required to classify resources into Measured, Indicated and Inferred. Furthermore, little guidance is given in the conversion of Resources to Reserves and the potential impacts on classification of uncertainties in the modifying factors. Working back from the intended use of the resource estimates, and in understanding the tolerance for uncertainty by the end user of such estimates, insights into the objective and requirements of classification can be determined. Following this approach a comprehensive set of (quantitative where possible) guidelines have been determined that will ensure resources meet the desired objective of each classification, and are consistent and comparable. The guidelines look at what is required for each step in the resource estimation process in order to ensure the final resource estimate meets the desired level of confidence. This approach provides a transparent, comprehensive, justifiable and largely objective method of classification. The implication of introducing such a guideline or approach is to highlight areas of a resource estimation that do not meet the requirements (ie drive the uncertainty beyond the objective) and then focus in on the risks that may flow on from that particular uncertainty, to mitigate or attempt to control those risks.
