Underground excavations are subjected to complex stress changes caused by nearby mining, but may also be affected by repeated dynamic loading from blasting and seismic events. In some cases, the combined, cumulative effects can lead to unforeseen damage, displacement and instability. Simulating dynamic loading of an underground excavation is a very complex task. The state of rock mass stress, damage and deformation must first be simulated sufficiently requiring small-scale structures to be explicitly modelled. Supporting elements must be represented with high similitude and then the dynamic event must be applied to the system in the case of blasts, or evolve as a consequence of rock mass instability for seismic events. A special case is for the effect of pit blasting on underground excavations - discontinuous rock phenomena at scales from mine, to bench, to pillar, to tunnel need to be captured and this represents one of the most computationally intensive tasks in mine simulation. Recent advances in computer power allow these tasks to be completed at a mine scale, incorporating discontinuities and geological detail matching the best practice for static Finite Element analyses. The results are a worthwhile contribution to mine decision-making, but require careful interpretation and thoughtful inputs - even more so than quasi-static analysis - as the cumulative effects of unfavourable modeling practices are greater. Some learnings from experiences with mine scale, discontinuum dynamic simulation are summarised, including a discussion of considerations of scale and similitude for this type of analysis.

Alluvial gold was found in the Terawhiti area, West of Wellington, in the 1850s. This led to the discovery of reef gold. Periods of minor 'gold fever', company flotations, and mining activity occured between 1869 - 1973, 1881 - 1986, and in the late 1880s, with one final company active in 1911 - 1914. 1n the early 1980s, further field work was carried out. No viable mining operations resulted from any of this activity.

This paper present a modification of selected strength criteria for coal and rocks containing weakness planes. The three strength criteria, namely, Murrell (1965), Bieniawski (1974a, 1983) and Hoek and Brown (1980) have been assessed for coal (containing weakness planes) by using triaxial strength tests. Triaxial test results indicated that the strength of coal specimens depends on the weakness plane inclination with respect to the principal stress direction. However it is shown that with increasing confining pressure, the effect of weakness planes inclination on the strength of coal specimens is reduced. The constant parameters in the three failure criteria for coal are determined for each weakness plane inclination by using the Datafit computer program (nonlinear regression analysis) and the results are compared with other rock types.

The Pajingo gold operation in Queensland is approximately 50 kilometres south of Charters Towers and 134km south-west of Townsville. The resource was discovered in 1983 and first open pit gold production began in 1986. The mine traditionally employed a bottom-up sequence – a combination of modified and traditional Avoca methods with run-of-mine waste backfill. This practice caused many high-grade crown pillars to be left in place, yet accessible. In recent years, these crown pillars have been extracted by injection grouting of rockfill. This process facilitated blind up-hole open stoping. To date, thirteen separate injection campaigns have been completed, of which ten were deemed successful. In general, the two key technical difficulties in this mining technique are: maintaining a consistent high-quality ground consolidation of the rock fill material; and controlling the drill and blast practices during stoping. Here, effective drill-and-blast control was found to be essential to achieve the dual aims of 100% extraction, and maximum sill pillar stability to minimise dilution. During stoping, the technical performance of the consolidated rock-fill was recorded; both to verify the design, and to identify operational improvements. The results showed that Pajingo has realised both reduced production down-time through use of early strength gain grout, and more rapid and thorough grout consolidation through changes to the emplacement method. The optimisation of consolidated rock fill has led to several quantifiable benefits to the mine, including: profitable extraction of previously sterilised crown pillars resulting in both increased ore reserves and production profile; improvements to the stability of grouted stope crowns, thereby reducing safety and production related; risks associated with open up-hole stopes; reduction in cost and time constraints, with respect to the grouting of loose fill; and reduction in grout curing time – from 14 days to 8 days – thereby minimising production down-time. This paper is a case study of the evolution and optimisation of the up-hole open stoping mining method at Pajingo. The challenges and successes are discussed in terms of their key mining outcomes. In 2005, Solid Energy New Zealand Limited obtained non-notified consent for the disposal of 1Mt of coal ash at the Rotowaro minesite, forming part of a coal supply agreement with the Huntly Power Station. The consenting of major mine site activities has historically required wide consultation and involves notification of the application.   The risk and cost associated with consultation can be significantly reduced via a non-notified process. A non-notified consenting process necessitates environmental effects to be shown to be æless than minorÆ, which requires the combination of robust science and a pragmatic approach to design, assessment of environmental effects, and consenting issues.   Key issues examined included consideration of how to practically operate a significant disposal project within the confines of an operating mine, minimising the costs, civil and geotechnical design and practical issues associated with traditional disposal. Environmental issues specifically related to the coal ash, led to a site specific performance driven approach to management rather than relying on conventional prescriptive approaches. Environmental issues of concern include the leaching of boron and aluminium from ash into groundwater and mine water management systems where both boron and aluminium can occur at elevated levels.   Coal ash exhibits unusual geochemical characteristics reflecting the primary coal composition and the combustion process. The dominant coal type combusted at the Huntly Power Station is derived from Rotowaro and the resulting ash is cementitious and has a high alkalinity. As a result the disposal design is based on the characteristics of the ash itself rather than the material into, or onto which the ash is disposed. Non-notified status was able to be achieved through consideration of these key characteristics of the ash, ensuring that the dimensions of the disposal site and each location was designed to minimise the flow of groundwater through the ash and demonstrating that the physical ash disposal effects are less than minor compared to the consented mining operation.

Early-Archaean (3.26 Ga) volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits located within the low strain and sub-prehnite-pumpellyite metamorphic-grade Strelley greenstone belt, East Pilbara, Western Australia, contain exceptionally well preserved sulphide textures which are directly analogous to those of sulphide chimneys formed by black smokers at present day submarine hydrothermal vents. The VMS deposits are associated with seafloor alteration zones in and below silica-carbonate laminites, at the top of tholeiitic to calc-alkaline intermediate and felsic rocks. VMS mineralisation comprises stratabound Zn-rich sulphide lenses with significant Cu and barite, and variable Pb and Ag, above Cu-rich stringer zones, all of which are similar to Phanerozoic polymetallic or Kuroko VMS deposits. Sulphide-sulphate mineralisation implicates hydrothermal discharge into sulphate-bearing ocean waters, ruling out a globally anoxic Archaean hydrosphere. The volcanic rocks and co-magmatic sub-volcanic intrusion hosting the VMS deposits are characterised by the conjunction of LILE>LREE>HREE, and Phanerozoic La/Yb with negative normalised anomalies of Nb, P and Ti, consistent with derivation via subduction zone hydrous metasomatism fusing the mantle lithosphere.

The classical metal-slag-gas equilibrium technique was used to study the thermodynamic activity of cobalt, iron and their oxides in iron silicate based slags containing under controlled oxygen potential (3.70 x 10-8 to 2.95 x 10-7 atm) at 1573 K. The measured activity of cobalt oxide in FeOx-25 wt per cent SiO2 slags showed positive deviation from ideal behaviour for melts with up to ten wt per cent CoO. At higher silica contents, the behaviour became closer to ideal and in accord with previous studies on silica saturated slags. The activity coefficient of FeO in these slags had virtually no dependence on the CoO content. Partial substitution of silica by lime resulted in an increase of the activities and activity coefficients of CoO, FeO, Fe2O3 and Fe3O4. The results indicate that saturation of the slag with a magnetite phase occurs at CaO contents of five wt per cent and higher. Phase equilibria studies SiO2-FeO-Fe2O3-CaO slags containing cobalt were also carried out using the drop-quench technique. Results from these experiments confirmed the formation of a magnetite solid solution containing about three wt per cent CoO at lime contents of five wt per cent and higher at 1573 K and 2.9 x 10-7 atm of oxygen.

The in-pipe treatment of slurries with polymer addition shortly prior to deposition is a noteworthy emerging technology of increasing popularity. Although polymer treatment has been shown to substantially modify and improve depositional and dewatering behaviour in a significant number of cases, the impacts of polymer treatment on geotechnical performance of tailings are less well understood. For example, certain combinations of polymer and slurry type have been shown to result in lower final densities at a given vertical effective stress. Despite these lower densities, polymer-treated tailings often exhibit peak undrained shear strengths consistent with untreated material. However, the sensitivity and/or brittleness of the material may be negatively influenced by the looser state created. Although these changes have been studied, most testing available in the literature was undertaken on relatively ‘fresh’ samples of polymer-treated material. However, significant shear may occur following treatment and prior to the commencement of settling and self-weight consolidation as the material moves down the beach.To study the effects of shearing on the subsequent performance of polymer-treated tailings, a test program consisting of consolidation, triaxial and direct simple shear tests was undertaken on presheared polymer-treated material. Materials used were identical to those used in previously published studies on the impacts of polymer treatment in a ‘fresh’ condition. Shearing of the polymer-treated material generally appeared to lessen the impacts of the polymer treatment process. However, the behaviour of the material when sheared indicated that the polymer was still impacting the behaviour of the material in some respects. The results indicate the importance of the consideration of shearing on material behaviour when planning and designing a tailings deposit where polymer treatment is to be implemented.CITATION:Reid, D and Fourie, A, 2015. The gold salting fraud at Busang on the island of Kalimantan, Indonesia was exposed in early 1997 and resulted from the independent drilling, sampling and assaying of PT Freeport Indonesia which reported assays from the South East Zone with negligible concentrations of gold. Since then, a number of legal actions directed at former Bre-X directors, consulting firms and financial or broking institutions are at various stages and are based on numerous allegations surrounding the supposed existence of obvious and numerous warning signs or æred flagsÆ. These include: the absence of references to visible gold in the drill logs; the alluvial nature of the gold grains; the high gravity recoveries; the invalid comparison with Kelian; the absence of outside scrutiny and the lack of external review/audit and surface depletion of gold. The focus on the red flags has been at the expense of the numerous positive indications or ægreen flagsÆ. These include the morphology and chemistry of the gold grains, the gravity testwork, the amalgamation results, the role of external consultants, the results of a review by one of North AmericaÆs leading minerals auditing groups, the behaviour of the gold at surface and the presence of references to visible gold in the drill logs. The flawed nature of the discussion of the technical facts surrounding Busang has prevented a meaningful and informed discussion about what actually happened and has, therefore, prevented the formulation of meaningful remedies for the future.

Grinding media is a major consumable in mineral processing and therefore decreasing costs associated with its consumption is regularly considered a key goal for the minerals processing industry. Grinding media manufacturers have historically developed steels with improved wear life for their products as a way of delivering incremental media quality improvement. This has included increasing carbon levels from low-to-medium carbon steels up to the eutectoid carbon composition of 0.77% where the relationship between higher carbon and better wear performance is well understood. Producers today will regularly use grades in excess of 0.8% to further improve wear performance particularly for rolled grinding media.This paper first introduces the demonstrated relationship between this increased carbon content and improved wear resistance along with metallurgical rationale behind the high carbon production process and limitations. To test the performance improvement associated with the higher carbon steel grade, a series of Marked Ball Wear Tests (MBWT) were carried out. This paper also explores the relationship between ball properties, test methodology and wear performance and concludes by correlating increased carbon grade with a reduced consumption rate of between 3.1% and 6.1% in the tests conducted.CITATION:Bovell, M, Bose, R and Cheong, G, 2018. The 115-year history of the Hall-Heroult process for production of aluminium has been characterised by a sustained technology-driven improvement in costs and productivity. In the past decade the industry has effectively transferred best practice into older technology with improvements through computer control of the process, and redesign of cell linings using computer modelling . Incremental development is now at the point where diminishing returns will apply for further technical improvement effort however, until the gap between technical limits and current best practice is addressed through major process redesign. The process remains a long way short of its technical limits in energy consumption, carbon anode consumption, cell life and product purity. Investment cost in new capacity is very high, supporting the retention of older and less efficient technology and hence limiting the application of best practice in environmental performance and occupational health exposure. The industry is a major emitter of greenhouse gases yet the process has the potential to release oxygen as the primary waste. All of the above issues will be addressed in the new century, but only through commitment to the necessary long-term research and development that is required to achieve a redesign of the process.

The gravity-induced stirred mill such as the TowerMill is an energy-efficient grinding solution used in secondary, tertiary, and regrinding duties in the mineral processing concentrator. The interest in this technology is emerging, with more than 300 mills installed globally in various grinding duties and commodities for the last 30 years. Although the technology is matured, there are still opportunities for improvement and the development of new knowledge to improve its circuit energy efficiency and reduce water consumption. Recent studies show that a combination of stress intensity, ore hardness, slurry density, and mill feed configuration can be used to evaluate the performance of the grinding circuit. A recent pilot-scale TowerMill test work at various stress intensities shows that a lower operating work index and size-specific energy were achieved at higher agitator tip speed and using medium size grinding media. These outcomes were confirmed through several site trials. A smaller 17 mm grinding media has reduced the operating work index and size-specific energy by 18 per cent and 11 per cent, respectively, compared to the 20 mm in a magnetite concentrator. Moreover, the conversion from top feed to bottom feed configuration has reduced the operating work index and size-specific energy by 13 per cent and 37 per cent, respectively. The circulating load was reduced by 34–38 per cent, leading to a reduction in the dilution water consumption in the hydrocyclone feed sump by 20 per cent. A variable frequency drive offers flexibility to change the stress intensities on the TowerMill, where a 35 per cent reduction in specific energy was achieved when the ore became soft. This paper explores the potential design and operating strategies that can be implemented to enhance the energy efficiency, reduce water consumption and reduce CO2 emissions in the circuit and finally evaluate its impact on the total cost of ownership.

This paper is a step in the direction of developing a computer model of the near source dispersal of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in planetary boundary layer (PBL). Since Surface Mine blasting is done during daytime, study of daytime dispersion in convective boundary layer (CBL) is relevant to the mining engineers. The scope of this paper covers dispersal after the blast in any type of PBL ie stable, convective and neutral but only under weak wind condition. Mathematical analysis of the dispersion of vertical dust column has been carried out during weak wind conditions in a tropical meteorological environment. It is noted that dust concentration reaches its maximum value some distance away from the point of blast, immediately after the blast (t*=1) and thereafter rapidly decreases. After a short interval from the time of blast at t*=11 the dust concentration shows linear decrease in concentration with distance. Dust concentration also rapidly drops during the interval t*=1 to t*=11, thereafter, rate of drop is nearly the same at any distance from the point of blast.

Three principal features of the ore at Captain's Flat, New South Wales, tend to complicate concentration of the valuable minerals, these being:1. The ore occurs in three more or less separate bodies which vary in texture and mineral ratios. Mining of constant proportions of the three sections, or adequate blending of the ore, is not fully effective, and consequently the flotation section is subjected to feedof varying texture.2. The mineral association in the heavily pyritic ore is extremely intimate. Composite particles exist even at 20 micron sizeI, and probably finer.3. The copper content of the ore averages_about 0,6%, which is high enough to justify recovery of the chalcopyrite in a separate concentrate. A review of the metallurgical history of the mine shows that this feature has been the cause of the several major changes in flowsheet of the flotation section since the commencement of milling.METALLURGICAL HISTORYThe mine started production in January 1939, at the rate of 250 tons per day of sulphide ore, assaying 0·68% Cu, 6·52% Pb, 10·8% Zn, and about 1 dwt. Au and 2 oz. Ag per ton.
