The Small Pebble Process for Reducing Ball and Power Consumption in Secondary Grinding Ball mills are used widely for secondary grinding. A mixture of ball sizes can be used to optimise grinding efficiency, but the use of balls smaller than about 30 mm in diameter is not normally viable, particularly when alloy steel is required. Preliminary testing of the grinding efficiency of various combinations of 40 mm steel balls and crushed stone in the size range 7 to 25 mm was carried out in a 300 mm diameter mill, which has accurate power measurement.The primary interest was to assess the potential benefit of adding small pebbles (from a primary circuit crusher or mill) to a secondary ball mill, to reduce ball consumption and to improve grinding efficiency. The optimum proportion of pebbles was found to be about 25 per cent by volume. This mixture produced about the same amount of fines as balls alone, but with lower power consumption, due to the lower density of the pebbles. The net result was a 12 per cent saving in power and a 25 per cent saving in ball consumption. The production of fines was partly due to pebble wear. The use of portions of 15 mm balls, (ceramic and steel), was also tested for comparison. A few batch pilot-scale tests were conducted in a 1.2 m diameter, 0.31 m long mill to test the viability of the pebbles at a larger scale. The pilot-scale tests confirmed the reduction in power and that the rate of production of fines was the same as that obtained with balls. The same residence time was used and this implies that pebbles can be added to an existing full-scale ball mill, with no loss in capacity. Samples of secondary mill feed and pebbles were obtained from a copper mine and the steady-state consumption of pebbles was determined by locked-cycle laboratory-scale tests. These tests demonstrated that mill power could be reduced by up 13 per cent and that the consumption of 40 mm balls could be reduced by up to 38 per cent, while maintaining the same throughput and product size. The rate of pebble addition was about 4 per cent of the primary circuit feed rate. Application has been made for patent protection.

Systems such as Davey Bickford’s Daveytronic® SP blast initiation system and electronic detonators have been an integral part of drill and blast activities in Australia for over a decade, with the significant benefits of electronic blasting well documented. Since 2010 the Multiblast feature has been commercially available, which enables eight individual blast patterns (up to 1500 detonators each) to be blasted in the same firing window. Synchroblast has been in active operation since 2012, which allows a blast of up to 4500 detonators – either as a single blast pattern, or several smaller adjacent blast patterns – to be reliably initiated.Multiblast manages blasts separately but concurrently, allowing all blasts to conduct prefiring checks simultaneously from the firing point utilising only one remote blasting unit. Each blast can be selected and fired individually, in a sequence determined by the operator by scrolling through the colour display. Synchroblast automatically detects the blasting configuration, and manages all detonators as a single blast pattern. This simplifies the design and blasting processes for the mining operation.Multiblast and Synchroblast are routinely employed throughout Australia and globally in both open cut and underground operations, enabling optimal productivity due to increased blast volume and reduced operational downtime associated with blasting events.A number of case studies will be presented in this paper, detailing various mining operations that are consistently blasting in excess of 2500 detonators per blasting event as a part of standard drill and blast operations. This paper reports on an innovative professional development program for school science teachers run collaboratively between the Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing and Murdoch University. Ultimately the initiative aims at increasing the pool of school students with strong science and mathematics backgrounds while highlighting the challenging careers available in the mineral resource sector including the gold industry. The program is unique in that it seeks to develop a network of science teachers who may participate in a series of workshops, short courses and tours over several years. The objective is to raise secondary school studentsÆ awareness of potential careers within the minerals sector by exposing teachers to a real life, hands-on look into the mining and minerals resource industry. Though the program includes the breadth of the resource processing sector, the potential value to gold processing is in developing a greater pool of potential employees. The initiative allows teachers to develop a better insight into the practical applications of the theoretical sciences they are required to teach. The evolution of the program from the first trials with Western Australian teachers to the introduction of the initiative to Queensland teachers are reported on. Additionally, the results of a pilot study involving 40 participating teachers are described. This study used a questionnaire and follow-up interviews to gain quantitative and qualitative feedback from teachers. There is evidence that the professional development program has resulted in teachers acquiring a new found appreciation for the application of the fundamental chemistry and physics they teach within the school curriculum. Also reported are associations between teacher participation in this professional development program and changing attitudes towards the industry in a positive way. Finally, there is some indication that these positive teacher attitudes may result in their students developing a better understanding of the diversity and availability of career paths within this industry.

New Developments in Spirals and Spiral Plant Operations Records indicate that spiral separators have been utilised in mineral separation for over 100 years. The Spiral's predecessor, the sluice, has been in use for centuries in different forms and a spiral can be thought of as a sluice wound around a column. The spiral separator is distinguished from the straight sluice, and other flowing film separators, in uniquely introducing centrifugal motion. The elegance of the spiral concept was embraced due to significantly improved separation efficiencies, ease of operation and tolerance of variation in feed conditions. Advances in spiral technology have improved the metallurgical performance, modernised the materials of construction, increased unit capacities and simplified operation. These advances have ensured that spirals continue to play a major industry role amidst other advancing and competing technologies. Recent developments in spiral and spiral plant technology include: the launch of the VHG spiral model, specifically aimed at feeds with very high levels of high-density mineral particles; the introduction of a high capacity wash water spiral model; and innovations in feed stabilisation and control. Details of these developments are presented together with the resultant operational benefits including feed stabilisation, product control and improved metallurgical performances.

Kinetic Study on the Leaching of Vanadium from LD Converter Slag Using Sulfuric Acid In order to reduce the environmental impact due to land disposal of LD (Linz-Donawitz) converter slag from steelmaking plant and to valorise this waste material, an acid leaching study was carried out to assess the effect of several parameters on the kinetics of vanadium dissolution. The characterisation and morphology of the feed investigated using XRD, XRF. The factors influencing leaching vanadium such as particle size, temperature, slurry density and the concentration of sulfuric acid were investigated and optimised. The maximum vanadium recovery about 95 per cent achieved at 70¦C, S/L: 1/15, acid concentration: 3M and for 150 minutes of leaching time. The dissolution of vanadium in sulfuric acid shows that there are two stages in the kinetics of leaching. At the first 15 minutes, there is a sharp increase in the amount of vanadium extracted and at longer leaching time, the extraction increase slightly. In the present work, the shrinking core model (SCM) was used to describe the acid leaching of vanadium compounds. A summary of the controlling regimes in the SCM are examined below for short time (less than 12 min.) and long time (more than 30 min.) stages. So, it was found that the kinetics of leaching in both stages is controlled by solid product diffusion regime.

Gravity methods of recovering alluvial gold are not very efficient at particle sizes below about 0.l mm. Whereas such gold may not have been economic to recover in the past, the same may not be true today. Centrifugal concentrators, like the Knudsen and Knelson bowls, are showing promise after an inauspicious start, at least in New Zealand. The large proportion of heavy mineral in many auriferous beach sands and the natural hydrophobicity of fine gold should make flotation an attractive contender for its recovery. The conventional mechanical flotation cell is effective, but roughing, scavenging and cleaning are necessary to achieve both high recovery and low mass Yield. More problematic is the difficulty of maintaining coarse and dense sands in suspension. The air sparged hydrocyclone is effective at recovering fine gold from a fine Colarado River sand, but is not effective for the coarse and dense beach sands of New Zealand. The flotation column shows much promise for these sands, when recoveries of over 80 per cent and mass yields of less than one per cent can be achieved in a single pass. The froth separator of the USSR and flash flotation could also be worthy contenders. It is felt that flotation could be limited to naturally and artificially de-slimed concentrates.

What do all iron ore mines have in common? Perfect production days! Yes, those harmonious 24-hour periods when the stars align and the daily output number rockets past the long-term average to hit new heights. While perfect days are always welcome, the focusing question iswas that just a ‘flash in the pan’ (due to a special cause) or an indication of the process’s capability (with clues to the common causes) which, if addressed, could make every day perfect? In the context of today’s operating environment, with the need to maximise productivity at minimum cost, it’s an important question.Investigations reveal that the throughput difference between a perfect production day and the average is often in the order of 40 per cent, and that bulk solids handling (BSH) system deficiencies are the largest (>50 per cent) class of lost opportunity. Root causes for underperformance of elements in BSH systems can often be traced back to the detailed design and even study-stage oversights. Essentially baked into the fabricated plant, operations are effectively forced to accept them at the point of practical completion and then deal with the consequences for the life of the mine. Subsequent normalisation of these defects in the planning process reduces visibility and hence the impetus for long-term solutions in favour of lower targets and quick fixes to keep the show on the road. On an industry wide basis the design processes and assumptions responsible for BSH system underperformance become enshrined as common practice and hence repeated across sites and organisations.In addition to making the case for action, practical steps that can be taken to help realise the significant productivity prize and avoid the problems in first place are provided.CITATION:Wellwood, G A, 2017. The optimization of metallurgical processes requires knowledge of the heterogeneity carried by constituents of interest. The common scenario, almost an industry standard, is to rely on the engineering firm who in turn relies on favorite manufacturers of sampling equipment to provide the appropriate sampling systems in the plant to perform accurate metallurgical accounting. This sequence is flawed from the beginning to the end because everything should be based on a careful understanding of the Theory of Sampling (TOS) by the company project team and their expert who invariably would suggest various approaches and different sampling systems.The necessary progressive and iterative approach should be that the company’s project team (mining or other industries) would do its home work to have a good understanding of the geometallurgy, mineralogy and texture of the ore in each geological unit so consultants and engineers would have the best information to start with. Then a reputable sampling expert would recommend which sampling systems are needed, so the company would require engineering firms to follow pre-established, non-negotiable requirements, and finally select the sampling equipment existing on the market today that is most likely to lead to accurate and precise enough metallurgical accounting.It is the author’s experience that when this necessary progressive and iterative approach is bypassed, sampling systems installed in the plant are likely to transgress the most elementary rules of sampling correctness. Invariably the argument is that the company cannot afford correct sampling systems for metallurgical accounting as suggested in the Theory of Sampling. There is nothing that is farther from the truth when later problems will develop and inevitable reconciliation difficulties with miners and geologists become daily routine with impossible answers; as a last resource the sampling expert may be called to perform a post-mortem analysis.The progressive and iterative approach suggested in this paper should be a due diligence requirement for any bank providing a loan for an important new mining project; anything less is most likely to generate unpleasant financial losses; historical, well-known examples are referred to.CITATION:Pitard, F F, 2015. Cretaceous to Cenozoic sedimentary basins in Western Southland include a wide range of non-marine and marine sediments, in a structurally complex setting dominated by major fault systems. A reassessment of their mineral potential confirms large quantities of nonmetallic minerals (limestone, aggregate, marl), and smaller reserves of bituminous coal, lignite, clays, and oil shale. Hydrocarbon potential is largely untested. Metallic minerals are present in trace amounts, apart from platinum group minerals and some detrital gold. In the offshore area, seismic data suggest the hydrocarbon potential is significant. The Orepuki area has the most interest onshore.

The Julius Kruttschnitt semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill model was developed by Leung in the 1980s and extensively updated to the variable rates model by Morrell and Morrison in 1996. Since then only minor upgrades have been incorporated in the version distributed in the JKSimMet simulator. A number of improvements, developed over the course of the AMIRA P9 project and in recent independent work, have now been incorporated. These improvements are based on a power-based model that directly relates the degree of breakage with energy consumption. The new size-dependent breakage function has been incorporated. The upgrades include more accurate predictions for a wide range of mill fillings (ten - 40 per cent), slurry hold-up in the mill, pebble discharge rate and the influence of changes in feed size and ball load.The paper presents the status of progress in the model development. This paper discusses the processes of planning a new operation, with particular emphasis on block caving and its Northparkes adaptation. As well as applying advanced technologies, here also is the opportunity to develop the art and science of block caving for its application to a wider range of geotechnical conditions than previously Envisaged.

Situated in north-west Queensland, Australia, the Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) has been producing copper and gold since 1996. Owned and operated by Glencore Xstrata, ore is currently sourced from a newly developed underground sublevel cave (SLC) mine below the old EHM open pit (the pit). Ore feed to the concentrator is supplemented by satellite open pits comprising the Mount Margaret operation.The transition from open pit to a producing underground mine involved a complex extraction sequence for the first two production sublevels on RL1650 and RL1625. Underground mining during cave initiation was further complicated when south wall instability prevented completion of the final open pit shell. The transition mining phase included mass firing of an inclined crown pillar between the initial SLC void and the pit followed by a combination of transverse and longitudinal SLC mining.The inclined crown pillar mass firing was the first significant milestone in the extraction of the transition ore block. Comprising approximately 890 000 t of in situ material; 70 000 m of drilling was charged with 351 t of emulsion and 6026 electronic detonators to initiate the single mass firing. The firing contained five direction changes over 19 seconds making it one of the largest and most complex underground blasts ever conducted in Australia.Risk management was integrated into every facet of the technical and operational planning and execution of the transition mining phase, whilst maintaining daily mine construction and production commitments. On the first of October 1991 two significant pieces of legislation came into force. Both of these are relevant to the allocation and use of minerals in New Zealand . They are the Crown Minerals Act 1991 and the Resource Management Act 1991.   The full legal implications of these is not fully known because the Planning Tribunal and the superior courts have not as yet had to deal with them in any detail. However, the thrust of the legislation is clear and it is appropriate to give an overview of how the statutes will operate in tandem if you are seeking to pursue or oppose any prospect, exploration or mining of Crown Minerals in New Zealand.

This paper summarises the process taken to simplify 35 ground support standards accounting for the multiple development profiles, dynamic geotechnical environment and the practical safety implications of a large-scale change in the ground control standards. This reduction was required after an incident involving incorrect standards being issued. The subsequent investigation identified that: • Selection of ground support standard for a mining instruction (MI) is not straightforward due to multiple standards, standards not reflecting current reinforcement used and complex geotechnical environment being encountered. Instead, site-specific ground control instructions were being issued. • Ground support standards were hard to follow and confusing, errors were present and not all standards to scale. • Ground support standards being used did not reflect what was being installed, ie bolt type incorrect and mesh orientation different. • No process or tier action response plan (TARP) for operators to follow for ground control standard noncompliance. • No justification for ground support standards being used in the current geotechnical environment. • No process for ground support standard selection and thereby no paper trail to document and assess adequacy of performance. A project was undertaken to reduce and simplify the ground support standards, produce a justification document to support ground support design and develop a process for site practitioners to identify the type of ground support standard required for the mining instruction. The exercise of rationalising the ground support was met with some challenges, including: • Technical aspects to determine the level of demand and the capacity for each ground support scheme. • Training the geotechnical engineers how to determine the level of risk for each area. • Winning over other technical services staff and the underground mining contractor of the new approach and then implementation. One of the major successes was the acceptance by the underground operators who found the system simplified their work and gave them increased confidence in management of seismicity. The rationalised ground support standards have now been successfully in place for over two years.

At Sams Creek a gold-bearing, peralkaline granite pophyry dike intrudes Ordovician-Silurian metapelite and quartzite. These metasedimentary rocks have undergone three phases of folding: a first phase of recumbent folds (F1), a second phase (F2) of northerly-trending inclined folds with a prominent crenulation cleavage, and a third phase (F3) of steeply plunging folds. The granite porphyry dike has a thickness of up to 40 m and intrudes thin lamprophyre dikes along its contacts. Deflection of the crenulation cleavage around the granite dike, shearing within the dike and its sinuous outcrop pattern indicate that the granite dike has been deformed during F2 and F3. The granite has been hydrothermally altered, with a first stage of magnetite-ankerite alteration. This first stage is cut by a second stage of quartz-pyrite veins and a third stage of sulphide, quartz and ankerite veins, accompanied by pervasive silicification represented by quartz-perthite-albite-rutile¦pyrite-ankerite-sericite assemblages. Lamprophyre is altered to an ankerite-chlorite-sericite assemblage. The sulphide veins are composed of arsenopyrite + pyrite ¦ gold ¦ galena ¦ sphalerite ¦ chalcopyrite ¦ pyrrhotite. The altered granite and the veins have been deformed and recrystallised. The competent sulphide minerals pyrite and arsenopyrite are fractured and brecciated, with fractures locally filled by galena, a ductile sulphide mineral. Vein quartz shows local cataclastic and mortar textures and develops pressure shadows around arsenopyrite. Alteration and mineralisation are confined to the granite porphyry and adjacent lamprophyre. These features together with the style of veining and the sulphide mineralogy indicate that the mineralisation was formed from a magmatichydrothermal fluid that was sourced from the granite. Oxygen, carbon and sulphur isotope values of the vein minerals (quartz, ankerite and sulphides) are also consistent with a magmatic source.

Moist Adiabatic Benchmark (MAB) and R70 testing have been applied to core samples of a multiple seam sequence from a borehole at the Doyles Creek Project. The coal samples range in rank from high volatile B bituminous to high volatile A bituminous, with a general increase in coal rank as depth increases in the borehole. The intrinsic coal reactivity to oxygen decreases with coal rank as indicated by the R70 values. The time taken to reach thermal runaway shown by the MAB testing however is strongly modified by the interaction between the intrinsic coal reactivity, the moisture content of the coal and the retained gas content of the coal. This is clearly demonstrated by the lowermost seam of the sequence. The MAB test for coal from the Whynot Seam took 20 days to go to thermal runaway, which projects to heating issues taking between eight to 12 months to occur for loosely piled coal found in coal roof falls or a longwall goaf and uncompacted stockpiles, assuming sufficient air is available for coal oxidation. The Omineca Belt of the Canadian Cordillera straddles the western boundary of the North American paleocontinental margin and accreted oceanic and island arc terranes. Crustal thickening of the orogenic belt was initiated in the Jurassic and culminated in latest Cretaceous and Paleocene times.Thin-skinned shortening of the Rocky Mountain Foreland Thrust and Fold Belt was balanced by basement-involved crustal imbrication within the Omineca (hinterland) Belt. Middle and upper crustal rocks of the hinterland (Selkirk allochthon) were thrust eastward and ramped onto basement of the North American continental margin. By latest Paleocene the southern Omineca Belt formed an elevated crustal welt that was at least 60 km thick.Within less than 3 Ma of the culmination of crustal thickening the belt was rapidly uplifted and tectonically denuded. The southern Omineca Belt was extended by as much as 80% as upper crustal rocks were displaced on moderate to low angle normal sense shear zones and brittle normal faults. This oro-genic collapse is interpreted to be a gravitational response to crustal thickening and thermal soft-ening, facilitated by reduction in plate-boundary-induced far field stresses.

Study on Desulfurisation and Deashing for Medium-High Sulfur Coal Using Shaking Table As important coal resources, medium- high sulfur accounts for a significant part of the coal reserve in China. The environmental regulations and fuel standard requires sulfur and ash to be removed before it is used, so as to save energy and decrease the emission. Therefore, the effective desulfurisation and deashing technologies are urgent needed. However, due to the local characteristics of the coal, specific technology with optimum operation parameters is required to develop for different local coal. Qinglong is a district of Guizhou Province, which has large medium to high sulfur contained coal reserve. In this paper, medium-high sulfur coal is sampled from Qinglong, Guizhou province. Some basic characteristics such as the mineralogical composition of the coal rock, the monomer existing state and the granulometric composition are determined by X-ray diffraction quantitative analysis and polarisation microscope analysis respectively. Adopting the classified feed method, shaking table tests show that the feed pulp concentration is 20 per cent, the stroke is 13mm, the frequency of the stroke is 380 per min, the cross slope is 3¦ and the volume of wash water is 5.2 L per min. Under such condition, aggregate processed coal yield is 72.87 per cent and sulfur content decrease to 1.31 per cent With shaking table technology of 'First stage rough and intermediate further fine benefication', the yield of concentrate coal increased from 72.87 per cent to 81.21 per cent, while the sulfur content reduced to 1.35 per cent.

The Mesozoic iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) mineralisation in southern Perú and the northern Chile coastal IOCG belt have emerged as two of the major exploration targets in the Central Andes in the last two decades. These Mesozoic Andean IOCG deposits formed in two mineralisation epochs, the Middle-Late Jurassic (170–150 Ma) and Early Cretaceous (130–110 Ma), with the major Cu-rich IOCG deposits located in the Early Cretaceous mineralisation belt. The early studies in some IOCG centres support a magmtic-hydrothermal model for both Cu-rich IOCG deposits and broadly contemporaneous Cu-poor ‘Kiruna-type’ magnetite deposits. However, recent evidence from field, geochronology, fluid inclusions and stable isotopes show that in the major Central Andean deposits (eg Raúl-Condestable, Mina Justa in southern Perú, La Candelaria-Punta del Cobre and Mantoverde in northern Chile), the incursion of evaporite-sourced basinal brines or sea water may be a prerequisite for economic Cu mineralisation. Moreover, the Cu-poor massive magnetite deposits could be interpreted as a product from iron oxide melt, with minimal intervention by non-magmatic fluids. Therefore, they could represent two contrasted deposit types and contain little genetic relationships. The different roles of magmatism during the Mesozoic are responsible for the variable mineralisation in the Central Andes, including IOCG, magnetite and ‘manto-type’ deposits. The ore modelling for both the Middle-Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous metallogenic epochs in the Central Andes are reconstructed.CITATION:Chen, H, 2015.
