In the estimation of reserves the known values of the variables of interest from surrounding drill holes are used to compute or estimate the unknown value of the orebody over a given region or at a given point of interest. The classical means of doing this are: 1. The Polygonal Method û where the region is divided into polygons centred on bore holes, each variable is then assumed to have constant value over each polygon. 2. Inverse distance methods, where the variable is assumed to vary linearly with the distance between the known values of the drill holes. 3. Inverse distance squared method û a quadratic variation is assumed for the variables between the bore holes.

An Innovative Process for Comprehensive Utilisation of Clay-Vanadium Ores By adopting conventional processing technologies such as flotation, gravity concentration, and magnetic separation, it is difficult to enrich vanadium mineral effectively. At present, vanadium extraction process usually has not the mineral processing enrichment procedure, but rather uses direct hydrometallurgical process: roasting - leaching - precipitating vanadium for obtaining high quality V2O5 product. But it results in problems, for instance, high consume of auxiliary materials like acid and alkali, serious pollution and high cost of vanadium extraction. In the project study on the ore of a certain clay vanadium mineral, by adopting the test process: scrubbing raw ore with reagents added in - dispersing and segregating with reagents - grading enrichment, vanadium concentrate product with higher grade was made by virtue of reagent's selective inhibiting, and the purpose of upgrading the raw material used for vanadium extraction with hydrometallurgical process is achieved. The process technology obtained from project study features simple process structure, low equipment investment, low cost of mineral processing and pollution-free to environment. It provides high efficient and practical technology for the comprehensive utilisation of clay vanadium mineral, and has a prominent prospect for its popularisation and application.

In March 1990, Heritage Mining conducted a 2000 line km high resolution aeromagnetic survey of all its prospects in the Coromandel Peninsula. One of the areas covered was the Onemana Peninsula, situated about 5 km north of Whangamata. Details of location and geology are given by Robson and Stevens (this volume).   The detailed helicopter-borne magnetic and radiometric survey over the Onemana area consisted of 163 line kmÆs of flying, and was carried out in order to assist in the definition of hydrothermal alteration and pre- or post- mineralisation structures. The line spacing chosen was 100 m, flown east-west, with a mean sensor terrain clearance of 80 m. Tie lines were flown north-south every kilometre for levelling purposes. The sensor was a Geoinstruments G-813 proton precession magnetometer in a towed bird, with data recorded using a Geoinstruments G-2000 acquisition system.   The Onemana alteration system is at the northern end of a major north-north east trending structural corridor defined by regional aeromagnetic surveys performed by AMOCO in 1980 (Rabone, 1991). T his structure hosts a number of other extinct hydrothermal systems including Karangahake and Golden Cross. In the Onemana contour plot the predominant north-northeast structures form the boundaries of a large area of subdued magnetism in the southern part of the surveyed area that is caused by intense hydrothermal alteration. This area is about 3.5 km long by 1 km or more wide and contains outcropping sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccias, as described in Robson and Stevens. A number of other structures transect this alteration zone, with strike directions ranging from northwest to north. A northwest feature notably truncates the zone to the south, while the northern end seems to be simi1arly bounded; however as data coverage ends at the coast, this feature is less conclusive.    Two distinctive types of strongly magnetic rock were discernible the contoured data. The strong negative magnetic anomalies the north and west are caused by fresh negatively magnetised rhyolites. This was confirmed by ground follow-up work that showed the rocks to be fresh biotite rhyolites with high magnetic susceptibilities.

The Golden Cross mine is a Joint Venture between Coeur Gold New Zealand Limited, as Manager, and Viking Mining Limited. The mine is targeting Zero Lost Time Accidents as a goal.   The Golden Cross operation produces gold and silver from both underground and open pit. The mine is based on an epithermal gold-silver deposit. Treatment of ore is on a campaign basis for each ore type (i.e. underground or open pit). Milling is conventional SAG Mill and Ball Mill grinding circuit followed by carbon in pulp recovery of gold and silver. All tailing materials are treated through the Cyanisorb process to reduce cyanide levels prior to being discharged into the tailings dam.

Risk and dispute resolution are linked. Dispute resolution techniques are brought to bear on a dispute - which is an outcome of a risk being wholly or partially realised. There has been an increasing awareness by business of risk as a component of doing business. There is an accompanying awareness of the need to manage risk - including legal risk. Many companies have undertaken a systematic review of their potential risks and endeavoured to put in place systems to help to avoid or manage risks. A legal risk management program will not prevent disputes arising. However, such a program should prescribe how that dispute will be managed. The management of the dispute will involve consideration of the dispute resolution procedure to be adopted. The most appropriate processes will take into account the practical, personal and commercial considerations surrounding the dispute and be as efficient, cost-effective and user friendly as achievable in the circumstances for the benefit of all the parties. Carrying on business in South East Asia, whether as an explorer or a mining operator, brings additional considerations to bear in legal risk management and the dispute resolution process. A significantly different perspective is required due to the varying nature of the legal systems in many South East Asian jurisdictions. These jurisdictions often have relative uncertainty as to the law. This impacts on the dispute resolution processes and also raises further timing and cost issues. The authors contend that this is all the more reason to endeavour, as practically as possible, to adopt a legal risk management and dispute resolution profile which will provide business with the greatest prospects of maintaining control of the dispute resolution process. This presents a greater chance of a successful outcome to the dispute. In these times of increasing pressures on profitability because of low mineral prices, all costs of a minerals business are being reviewed. In such times, a significant legal dispute may have even greater potential to adversely impact on the companies concerned, together with the careers of the people involved. In this paper possible approaches to managing disputes and a case study a legal dispute in which Freehill Hollingdale and Page were involved are discussed. The dispute concerned an international mining company developing a gold mine in Indonesia and one of its contractors in Indonesia. Described is how that dispute was resolved. This achieved a very satisfactory result for the client - all things considered. Given the æadditionalÆ problems associated with ascertainment and enforcement of ærightsÆ in South East Asia, the longer the parties can retain control over their dispute the better off they will be. For this reason, the authors set out in this paper the main additional dispute resolution tools available - that are appropriate for use throughout South East Asia.

The Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) is the largest international geoscience project in the world, and the state-of-the-art drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution, is permanently at sea. Each year there are six scientific cruises (legs) which each last approximately two months. These legs are designed by geoscientists from the nineteen countries that subscribe to ODP.Australia and Canada presently share ODP membership under the banner of the AUSCAN Consortium. The benefits of Australia's involvement in ODP include internationalisation of Australian geoscience, advanced graduate training, and unique scientific investigations of the ocean floors in the Australasian region. In addition, visits to Australian ports by the ODP drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution, contribute up to $2 million per visit to the local economy. Amongst the many other aspects of ten years of scientific drilling, OOP has significantly contributed to our understanding of hydrothermal processes on the seafloor. To date, three hydrothermal sites have been drilled to date by the OOP, Snakepit (MAR), Middle Valley (Juan de Fuca Ridge) and TAG (MAR). Two more hydrothermal sites are scheduled for 1996.

The purpose of this paper is to outline current research on the Paparoa and, at the request of conference organisers, to present a general introduction to the geology of the Greymouth Coalfield as background to more specialised papers. Few results of my present work will be given; these can be presented at the next conference. Briefly, the research aims for an understanding of the controls which depositional environment has exerted on coal character, to be reached by a study of coal type and thickness, shape and extent of seams, integrated with a basinal analysis of the coal measures. An accurate description of the coalfield in these terms should facilitate prediction of subsurface trends, with possible application to the planning of drilling programs, and to mine development. Although study of Paparoa coal types is included here as only part of the research, coal type should be recognised as an important concept which has until revently been almost entirely neglected in New Zealand.

Western New Zealand can be regarded as a rifted continuation of eastern Australia. Detailed studies of units previously considered to have trans-Tasman correlations are being undertaken within the FRST Programme Mineral Wealth of NZ and its EEZ to test specific connections, and thus add to the exploration framework of NZ. Correlation of two major episodes of granitic magmatism are currently being investigated. These represent the oldest (mid Paleozoic) and youngest (Early Cretaceous) magmatic events that conjoined Australia and New Zealand are believed to have in common.

Brunswick Mine, one of the largest underground zinc mines in the world, is scheduled to close in 2010 after almost half a century of production. All mines eventually close; some suddenly as a result of unsustainable economic or technical conditions and others, as in our case, as a result of the depletion of the orebody. When the mine is the most significant employer and an economic driver in the region, it is key that the closure is handled in a planned, communicated, well-executed fashion. The following paper documents strategies, plans and activities that are currently taking place in order to ensure a seamless closure that satisfies all stakeholders including employees, management, regulatory bodies and the public. It is an important deliverable for the company that the good will, credibility and reputation that has been built up over the years is sustained throughout the closure process and beyond. A life of mine labour agreement with the unionised workforce, staff retention and recruiting programs, regulatory closure plans, communications and transition adjustment activities will be discussed. The use of a stage-gate style project management tool analysing the risks and key deliverables will be highlighted. It is hoped that the concepts and approaches discussed here may be of value to other operations that will be faced with closure, and its inherent challenges, in the not too distant future.

The prime objective of geometallurgy is to improve the profitability of mines through the use of spatial models of rock properties that have a significant impact on value. Although a key property is the grade of the component of interest, because it directly influences the revenue from saleable material, increasingly attention is being focused on other attributes. These 'non-grade' variables may have a less direct, but equally profound impact on value, either by reducing potential revenue (eg lowering recovery, deleterious elements, etc) or increasing mining or treatment costs (eg comminution, grindability, throughput, reagent use, etc). Collectively, these variables have been described as 'geometallurgical'. There are three main areas of activity required to realise the value of geometallurgy: 1. acquisition of appropriate data through sampling and measurement, 2. building spatial models of geometallurgical variables, and 3. using these models to optimise value. Each of these is built on the foundation of the preceding step. In building reliable spatial models, it is critical that the amount of error introduced to data by the sampling and measurement processes is understood and quantified, in order that the inherent variability of the component of interest can also be properly understood. Management of the quality of grade variables is now applied (with different levels of diligence and success) across nearly all sectors of the mining industry, not least because of the necessity to adhere to Codes of practice (eg JORC, 2004). The necessity for quality management and at least the broad framework of what to do in practice is reasonably understood by many relevant professionals. There are also a number of tools, including software products, statistical analyses and presentation formats, available for those managing grade data. It is also abundantly clear, that in many cases people have little understanding of why they are doing particular quality control activities, or how to sensibly interpret the results. The same is not true for many geometallurgical variables. In almost all instances the authors have seen, the magnitude of sampling and analytical/measurement error variance embedded in geometallurgical test data is untested and unknown. This is partly because until relatively recently, metallurgical data has mainly been collected for the purpose of process and mill design, with few, expensive tests carried out on 'average' samples of the orebody. Increasingly however, there is a move towards collection of much larger data sets from spatially distributed sampling, and thus a growing necessity to understand the errors inherent in both sampling and analysis of these types of variables, and how to manage them. In order to understand how the quality management practices applied to grade variables can be extended to geometallurgical variables, it is essential to understand the theoretical foundation that supports these practices. This requires an analysis of the concepts that underpin the 'principles of additivity' (Matheron, 1963), the 'theory of sampling' (Gy, 1982, Pitard, 1993), and 'statistical process control' (Shewhart, 1930). Relevant concepts are then integrated to form a foundation to develop methods to improve the quality management of geometallurgical variables. Application of this framework will significantly increase the integrity of geometallurgical data, the reliability of geometallurgical models and ultimately the value derived from implementing geometallurgy. An intensive safety campaign at Mount Isa Mines Limited from 1956 to 1966 saw the lost time accident frequency rate fall to half its original level. A review of the safety programme was carried out in 1967 and in 1968 the Five Point Safety System was introduced. The seven years since its introduction have been years of significant achievement both in production and safety. Improving safety is a fundamental part of Mount Isa Mines Limited's policy and this system has been a major tool in implementing that policy. To be successful personnel need to be prepared and trained for its introduction and subsequently counselled on its use. A carefully prepared programme is required to phase in various aspects of the system and to make use of complementary steps. The system has been a success and it is anticipated that the continued drive to improve the use of principles of the system will further improve safety. It is hoped that this paper will be of value to those personnel concerned with industrial safety in Australia.

The effect of liner wear on SAG mill performance has gained much attention in recent years. It is commonly observed that the three key performance criteria of SAG milling; throughput, power and product size all improve as the liner wears.The increase in throughput is generally ascribed to the increase in the grate apertures and the increase in mill volume due to the wear of these components. Whilst the decrease in product size is attributed to the reduction in lifter height and angle, resulting in more breakage by means of attrition and abrasion.Though it is widely acknowledged that the wearing of liner components such as Lifters, Plates and Grates have a significant impact on mill performance, their individual contribution to changes in mill performance has been unclear, and resultantly lead to questions like; what percentage of the throughput increase can be attributed to the increase in mill volume (plate wear)? and how much can be attributed to the increase in grate aperture (grate wear)?It has been found that through the use of grinding surveys, analysis of production data and JKSimMet it was possible to separate the effects of changing liner profile, increasing mill diameter and increasing grate aperture on the mill performance allowing for the quantification of each.The outlined methodology allows for both troubleshooting of problem liner components which reduce milling efficiency in their wear life as well as providing a basis for a more quantitative approach to liner design and reline scheduling.CITATION:Toor, P, Powell, M, Hilden, M and Weerasekara, N, 2015. The study of air-core dynamics in hydrocyclone operation is essential for predicting separation efficiency in mineral processing. Electrical resistance tomography (ERT) allows non-invasive measurements of hydrocyclone internal flow dynamics. Existing regularisation methods such as Gauss-Newton and TV norms rely on optimisation techniques which have very high computational cost for very fine meshes. In contrast, the monotonicity method has much lower computational cost as it does not solve such minimisation problems. In this paper, results from the monotonicity method, Gauss-Newton (GN) (Tikhonov) and Total-Variation (TV) norm-based minimisation methods for estimating the air-core diameter in hydrocyclones are compared. We study these methods on the laboratory hydrocyclone experimental two-phase flow data. The results obtained are validated against High-speed video (HSV) imaging and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) results. The results on different mesh sizes, in particular for very fine meshes with the number of cells ranging from 30 000 to above 100 000 are also investigated. The data used in this study is obtained from ITS Z8000 ERT system. This system does not measure the voltages on the current carrying electrodes. Since these voltage values are required for the monotonicity method, we implement an interpolation method to compute them. The results show that the monotonicity method provides a closer approximation of the interface between air and the water phases.

Equipment maintenance is 30 - 50 per cent of the operating costs for a typical mining company. While this is substantial, its importance is beyond its significance as a cost heading. Modern mining requires large amounts of investment in capital infrastructure and equipment to produce a product sold at a low unit cost. To stay competitive, such a business has to focus on full realisation of its capital investment, ie sustained production at high levels. Maintenance plays an essential role in achieving this goal. Mining companies typically use a mix of breakdown or corrective maintenance, planned maintenance, and some condition-based maintenance. The share of breakdown maintenance has been coming down through more effective planned maintenance and better condition monitoring tools. Planned or preventive maintenance (PM) is playing an increasingly important role in todayÆs mining maintenance. This is the suite of inspection and repair/replacement actions performed at scheduled time intervals as part of a preplanned activity. The activities are scheduled well in advance and, usually, the current wear-state of the machine is irrelevant. For example, the replacement of a major gear may have been planned 18 months in advance; replacement is carried out when the time comes regardless of the actual condition of the gear. The PM costs are significant and include direct cost of parts and labour as well as the opportunity cost of lost production while the machine is under maintenance. It is important to identify the optimum PM effort because over-maintenance should be avoided as much as under-maintenance. A new concept called severity-based maintenance is introduced in this paper. We have seen that measuring equipment ageing in mining merely by counting the engine hours is a very imprecise way of planning and scheduling maintenance because the damage accumulated in one hour varies enormously from operator to operator and with changing pit conditions. We recommend continuous monitoring of duty on all major equipment. This is feasible without having to fit out the machine with an army of sensors because most of the physical sensors required by dutymeters are already installed and maintained as part of the existing performance monitors. While the investment is modest, the potential benefits are huge and can be grouped under three headings:Immediate benefits will come from providing operators with direct feedback on the effect of their behaviour on machine health and training them to use this feedback to correct their operating style. The equipment can operate closer to the limits of capacity, producing more without unduly sacrificing the availability by monitoring and controlling the severity of the operation, ie the duty on the machine. Longer term benefits accrue from establishing correlations between actual time to failure data and measured equipment duty and using these correlations to optimise maintenance effort as well as planning new equipment purchases and warranty conditions.

The East West Link road tunnels are proposed to provide a connection between the CityLink toll road and the Eastern Freeway north of the Melbourne CBD. The alignment passes from Moonee Ponds valley beneath the Upfield Line railway cutting, Royal Park, the historic Melbourne Cemetery and beneath Alexander Parade rising to an eastern portal at Hoddle Street. The western (Royal Park) part of the alignment passes through the folded and faulted Silurian Melbourne Formation, which has been subjected to deep weathering since the Triassic.The Melbourne Formation in the Royal Park area is mainly characterised by interbedded sequences of siltstone and fine-grained sandstone. The beds are often graded and a clear boundary between the siltstone and fine-grained sandstone rock can be difficult to distinguish. Variation in lithology and the presence of structural geological features such as folds and faults have resulted in an irregular weathering profile within the Silurian rock; nonetheless the formation typically becomes less weathered with depth.Due to difficulties in obtaining reliable laboratory strength and stiffness relationships with weathering grade, in situ testing methods such as downhole shear wave velocity and high-quality pressuremeter testing are a useful aid to assessing appropriate geotechnical parameters for design.This paper presents an analysis of the variation in shear modulus of the Melbourne Formation, determined at small-strain (from downhole seismic data) and at ‘engineering scale’ strain (from pressuremeter tests) for extremely weathered (XW), highly weathered (HW) and moderately weathered (MW) rock. Estimates of small strain shear modulus (Go) obtained a range between 400 to 3400 MPa for these weathering grades. By comparison against the pressuremeter test data, reduction factors to be applied to these Go values to estimate shear moduli at engineering strain levels typically range between 0.10 and 0.35.The downhole geophysics undertaken in the Royal Park boreholes also suggests that there is an inversion in velocity between approximately 15 and 27?m depth below the top of the formation. This is thought to be related to the effects deep Plio-Pleistocene weathering, iron cementation of joints and increasing frequency of ‘non-healed’ joints in the transition from MW to slightly weathered (SW) rock.CITATION:Macklin, S, Schult, M, Terzic, Z and Chu, D, 2014.
