In November, 1975, Aberdare North colliery was sealed at the surface to extinguish an open fire underground.The fire had developed from a spontaneous heating in one of the open goaf areas of the mine.The mine was re-entered with normal ventilation methods following the isolation of the working district containing the fire. The isolation was accomplished by remotely sealing the open roadways with lly ash emplaced through boreholes from the surface. A subsequent re-entry operation similarly closed the roadways close to the fire and enabled the re-opening of the sealed district.Most of the mine and the underground equipment was recovered after clearing of numerous falls and production recommenced on 25th October, 1976.

Blackwater Mine is in the central-southern Bowen Basin, immediately south of the township of Blackwater on the Capricorn Highway. The current open cut operation extracts coal from three main seams, designated Top, Middle and Lower, in the Late Permian Rangal Coal Measures cropping out on the eastern flank of the Comet Ridge. Complex geological structures, dominated by E-W normal faults and N-S reverse faults, have significant detrimental effects on coal mining operations. Historical exploration before 2010 involved several types of drilling only to understand structure, coal quality and washability. Hence, although drilling data was combined with limited pit mapping and observation, unknown structures were still often encountered during excavations and led to mining surprises. In 2010 BHP completed 200-line km of closely spaced 2D seismic survey to capture gross and detailed structures followed by fit for purpose structural drilling to confirm major structures in the northern part of the mine. In 2018 a high density 9.2 km2 3D seismic survey was completed in the southern part of the mine. Subsequently, a 17.2 km2 survey was completed in 2020 to cover the northern active mining area. It allowed geoscientists to successfully map previously unknown major faults and seam splits, which could potentially impact the mineability of the area. It is important to note, that faults interpreted using modern high-density 3D data can be interpreted with dramatically higher confidence in the fault dip and azimuth orientation in comparison to the legacy 2D data. Along with targeted drilling, pit mapping and structural interpretation, the outcome adds value to mine planning and operations. This paper outlines recent successful seismic 3D data acquisition and interpretation. In detail, the paper presents case studies on how the data can be incorporated into a structural model to improve geological knowledge, enable geotechnical assessment, and support safe and efficient coal mining in a large and structurally complex mine.

Mining project developers are committed to taking on all the challenges and obligations of financial risk management. It is interesting that our current models of project finance have not changed markedly in principle for some 700 years, yet the rules which prepare the way for effective project assessment and subsequent loan management still do not seem to be well understood by project or corporate developers. Probability and gravity fill the opposing trays of the golden balance of financial risk. Understanding the relationship between these opposing, but intimately related elements is critically important for successful risk management. It is important to move beyond the qualitative approach and use quantitative methodologies to measure the financial impact of the occurrence of each major risk. We live in a world where the only constant is change and thus it is not surprising that a bankerÆs life is still governed by assessing, measuring and pricing risk. Banks are attracted to funding well managed companies with strong cash flow projects. But we are more risk averse compared with the credit appetites of late last century. This attitudinal shift has resulted in tougher term sheets for the early 21st century, encompassing more conditions, warranties, undertakings and stronger cash sweep provisions. Banks require well balanced portfolios to achieve an acceptable spread of risk, thus there is a more restricted market for small company lending than that available to large multi-project corporate entities with less concentrated risk profiles. Because of this focus, junior company debt finance remains comparatively expensive and especially so for more challenging geographical and political environments.

Under the Town and Country Planning Act 1977 the Ministry of Works and Development has a responsibility for providing information to local and regional planning authorities on public works and matters of national development and importance, for the exercise of their responsibilities under this Act. One such matter which has recently become a source of concern is the development of South Island lignite. In 1979 the Ministry of' Energy produced a position statement outlining a programme of' research leading to the possible extraction of lignite in Southland or Central Otago for conversion into about 50 per cent of New Zealand's liquid fuel requirements by 1995. Understandably this possibility has caused considerable concern at the local level, expressed particularly by bodies such as Federated Farmers and the local authorities. In the absence of any factual knowledge short of mere conjecture been able to recommend to local authorities is that they limit their planning period to ten years. After this time more information regarding the size, nature, location and certainty of the proposal will permit a more accurate assessment of the implications of the York. While on holiday earlier this year I took the opportunity to visit opencast mining areas in Germany and England to gain an appreciation of the scale of impacts involved and discuss with those concerned the procedures used in planning for such operations. What follows is a brief description of these operations, a comparison with the likely development in this country and the extraction of what may be some relevant principles of' operation for the planning of an environmentally acceptable project. Major falls of ground, strainbursts, airblast and mudrush events are the major hazards in block caving environments, resulting in both safety and financial consequences and losses. Rio Tinto mines have developed strategies to reduce the likelihood of these events occurring. However, until recently, there have been no tools available to monitor and manage these hazards in real time.Mira Geoscience and Rio Tinto have collaborated to develop real-time geohazmaps to monitor and manage major cave hazards. These geohazmaps are used by mine planners to integrate multiple hazard parameters that contribute to form a combined hazard rating.The benefits of implementing geohazmaps include safety and cost improvements through the early identification of potential locations for major events. These cost savings are realised in the design phase, where development and critical infrastructure is located in areas of lower hazard rating. Additional improvements can be achieved by taking the hazard level into consideration when planning the production and development schedules and ground support design.CITATION:Talu, S, Savage, E and Howe, S, 2016. Mining-induced seismicity at Junction Gold Mine became a serious operational problem in the late-1990s. Assessing the local seismic hazard is an important step in assessing the risk associated with potential rockbursting. This paper discusses the qualitative and quantitative means of assessing seismic hazard used at Junction. In qualitative hazard assessment, the role of the primary factors contributing to mining-induced seismicity and rockbursting are identified. These factors include: rock mass properties, geological structures, mine development, and stoping. A qualitative seismic hazard map has been developed considering these factors. In quantitative hazard assessment, seismic source parameters from an Integrated Seismic System are used to assess seismic hazard. The seismic source parameters found to be relevant to seismic hazard assessment at Junction are discussed.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. More than 11 Moz of Au and 50 Moz of Ag have been produced from epithermal deposits in New Zealand, almost entirely from 50 deposits in the Hauraki goldfield. Since the 1980s, new deposits have been discovered at Waihi (Favona, Trio, Correnso) and nearby at Golden Cross. Feasibility studies into reopening the Talisman mine at Karangahake are continuing, and advanced projects with preliminary inferred resource estimates are reported at Wharekirauponga, Neavesville and Muirs. In the Taupo Volcanic Zone, 11 prospects have been drilled, resulting in the definition of large but low-grade Au-Ag resources at Ohakuri. In Northland, several Au, Ag and/or Hg prospects are known, and small quantities of Ag and Hg have been mined. Six prospects have had some drilling, with the most advanced exploration at Puhipuhi. The application of Taupo Volcanic Zone geothermal systems research to the modelling of former hydrothermal mineralising processes in some epithermal prospects has enabled better targeting of exploration.CITATION:Christie, A B and Barker, R G, 2015. The ultrabasic body contains small included masses of melanocratic and leucocratic rocks, together with chromium, copper, zinc, and nickel mineralization.

The in situ rock mass rating system û IRMR - leading to the mining rock mass rating system - MRMR - for jointed rock masses has been used (and abused) in mining operations around the world for the past 27 years. Despite the recent development of elaborate design procedures and computer-aided design packages, MRMR remains one of the most versatile and practical mine design systems available. It is important to realise that the rock mass classification system should not be replaced but rather complemented by more sophisticated and detailed design procedures. The classification system is not only the æcrudeÆ method used for initial assessment (as described in some geotechnical literature) but also in many respects a very effective and practical engineering tool. MRMR could, and should be used during the entire stage of mine life as an integral part of the design process. The objectives of this paper are to illustrate using practical case histories from the past decade, some of the pitfalls of the MRMR classification system, to clarify certain misconceptions in its application and update its mining application.

Over the past few years developments in heavy minerals processing have concentrated on the mineral separation portion of the business. The best example of this would include new developments in rare-earth magnetic separators and associated flowsheet modifications. Except for some minor modifications in spirals, the æwetÆ side of the separation business has lagged behind the ædryÆ side. Basic concentrator design has not changed in 20 years. Recent pilot trials by Outokumpu Technology have shown the benefits of a new gravity flowsheet that combines density separation and spiral concentration on a variety of heavy mineral deposits. This concept is already well utilised within the iron ore industry. The synergistic combination of these two technologies allows smaller, simpler, and controllable gravity concentrators to be built while providing equivalent or better grade and recoveries of valuable heavy mineral. This is contrasted to the all spiral flowsheet characterised by the diminishing returns of multiple stages of spirals and associated recirculating loads. Examples of the flowsheets and associated benefits will be presented from a variety of cases.

Extraction of copper from a chalcopyrite concentrate by means of a cupric chloride leach is described. Initially the concentrate is mixed with sulphur in a 9: 1 ratio, and heated to 350-400°C. This converts the chalcopyrite into more readily soluble sulphides, while the iron rejected from the chalcopyrite is transformed to pyrite, which is insoluble in the leach solution employed. A two-stage countercurrent leach using a leach solution of 1 M cupric chloride, 3.5 M sodium chloride, and 1 M hydrochloric acid extracts 98 per cent of the copper, if conducted at 105°C. Iron extraction is relatively low, the mole ratio of iron to copper extracted being 0.17, compared to 1.0 for unreacted chalcopyrite. After dissolution, copper can be recovered by electrolysis, cupric chloride leach solution being regenerated at the anode.Electrolytic power requirement is low, being approximately 0.5 kWh per kg of copper. The sulphur and, most of the iron entering as feed are rejected from the process in the form of pyrite, which remains in the leach residue.

Many people are familiar with the use of marine echo sounders which are used by fishermen to monitor water depth and locate schools of fish. Similar technology has recently been used in some West Australian mines to provide detailed maps of ore contacts and other geological structures. Whilst drillhole intersections provide details of the location of a contact at a point, echo sounding can be used to obtain a continuous profile of the contact. A series of profiles together with drillhole intersection data can be used to build a more accurate geological model than can be inferred from drillhole intersections alone. The benefits of this are more complete ore extraction, less dilution and the ability to make more informed financial decisions. This paper presents a case history which demonstrates the successful application of the technology.

"Understanding controls on groundwater and surface water flow and quality at mine sites throughout all mine stages is critical to effectively manage environmental impacts over the entire mine life. Monitoring forms is an essential component of this proof of understanding. Typically, monitoring programs at mine sites have been developed in the framework of existing conditions. However; recognition of the challenges of climate change and the performance of mines during recent extreme events in Australia has highlighted the need to develop monitoring programs that are resilient and responsive to changing environmental conditions. Water monitoring programs need to be effective under a range of environmental conditions, potentially not historically experienced.This emerging challenge requires cross-disciplinary teams to work together to understand issues including: representativeness of background conditions to longer-term conditions at the mine site sensitivity of mine and closure designs to changing climate and hydrologic conditions methods of performance (eg water quality or quantity) failure during extreme climate events such as flood or extended drought.These understandings come together in a detailed conceptual and, in many cases, numerical hydrologic model that considers the mine-water environment under a range of conditions. The groundwater, surface water and water quality monitoring programs that are developed from the conceptual model need to be sufficiently responsive to be effective in the face of such changing conditions, with results in turn informing the conceptual model. Extended drought, major floods and changing weather patterns can alter recharge and discharge areas, oxidation profiles and ultimately, the contaminant flux estimates that would have contributed to mine design parameters and performance. Unless these effects are considered in the spatial and temporal design of the monitoring program and within the parameters monitored, the resultant program may fail to capture data that are critical to evaluating environmental impacts from mine sites.Developing and implementing a water monitoring program that considers these issues can build confidence in mine performance under a range of conditions, leading to increased confidence by all stakeholders in long-term mine performance during and after closure.CITATION:Weaver, T R, Price, A D, Patterson, O and Germs, W J, 2013. "AustraliaÆs mining sector faces challenges to its competitiveness; operating costs are being adversely affected as a result of volatile commodity prices and growing international market pressures.Diesel fuel-generated power used in typical remote mining projects is generally reliable and quick-to-deploy; however it is ongoing expensive operating cost.Many mines and communities in remote locations source electricity from diesel generation, and often pay over $300/MWh in fuel and carbon only (i.e. excluding CAPEX). These costs are expected to rise over time and are vulnerable to price shock events or supply chain interruptions in international markets.Solar photovoltaic (PV) and other renewables can be integrated with existing diesel units to provide a highly reliable power supply. Such renewables now provide a cheaper source of electricity while maintaining the mining industryÆs stringent reliability requirements; some renewables are now cheaper than diesel power ù supplying electricity at approximately $226/MWh.Also, significant funding and concessional rate financing have recently become available to support the development of remote solar-diesel (or solar-wind-diesel) hybrid systems, including: up to $2.2 billion of as-yet uncommitted grants through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and is now seeking mining industry partners, up to $10 billion of concessional financing for emerging renewable technologies through the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) and this commences July 2013, ongoing revenue support through the Renewable Energy Target scheme, and other regional support programs administered by various governments.This paper explores: the business case for renewables - what applications and when to consider them, the potential operating cost savings if solar was integrated, the technical challenges and common pitfalls, and how to overcome them, and the upfront investment costs and whether the site is eligible for Government subsidy programs.CITATION:Chambers, C, 2013. Sphalerites from Devonian cassiterite-sulphide deposits and Pb-Zn-Ag fissure veins have similar ranges of Cd contents, but the average Cd and Fe contents could indicate a small initial difference in availability of Cd between the Zeehan-Renison Bell district and the Mt. Bischoff-Waratah district. Sphalerites from banded Pb-Zn deposits (Rosebery and Hercules) are characterized by low Cd content which is a world-wide feature of such deposits in exIrusive rocks, and may indicaIe a genetic relationship between ore deposition and vulcanism.

The legislative operating environment, or the mineral regime, that a country has to offer is one of the key determinants that a company wanting to invest in an area takes into account in formulating its investment decision.   The New Zealand Government recognises this and the importance of getting the regime right in order to provide for continuing investment in mineral exploration and mining in New Zealand . In recent years, the Government has given considerable attention to developing legislation which provides for investment to take place; for those making the investments to have a stable, fair and open investment environment with government intervention only when considered absolutely necessary because other approaches are not working; and for the people of New Zealand to know that investment must meet acceptable health and safety standards and have acceptable impact on the environment. Also of key importance is having a clearly defined mining regime which includes rules on how to obtain a permit and rules in respect of ongoing permit compliance, rights to develop a mineral resource and permit conditions (in particular, the royalty regime). In New Zealand , these matters will all be addressed in what are referred to as 'minerals programmes'.   The Crown Minerals Act 1991, which is the legislation governing the allocation and management of permits for Crown owned minerals, requires that the Minister of Energy prepare minerals programmes. Minerals programmes establish the policies, procedures and provisions that the Minister shall follow in exercising his or her functions and powers under the Crown Minerals Act. Minerals programmes set out the principal reasons for and against adopting these policies, procedures and provisions and also restrictions on prospecting, exploration and mining for Crown owned minerals. Essentially minerals programmes define the mining regime for the minerals to which they apply, other than the taxation regime, environmental and health, safety provisions, land access matters and general matters concerning the investment climate.

A zinc-lead-iron sulphide concentrate from McArthur River can be leached at atmospheric pressure in aqueous solutions with HCI, FeCl3, CuCI2, HCl/02 HC1/02/ CuCI2, Cl2, and CI2/CuCI2 to extract >98 per cent zinc, >90 per cent silver, and <15 per cent iron in 1-7 h at 95°. Galena is more reactive than sphalerite and is converted to lead chloride. Except for leaching with HCI, elemental sulphur is the the main by-product of the leach with little or no sulphate ion detected. The rates and products of these reactions are compared. It is recommended that aqueous slurries of the concentrate (50 per cent w/v) are leached at atmospheric pressure with Cl2 in the presence of copper(II) chloride, which accelerates the extraction of zinc. Hydrochloric acid is a by-product which is consumed bYJeaction with fresh concentrate in air at 60°. Copper is subsequently stripped from the leach solution and recycled by reaction with fresh concentrate at 100°. The separation, recovery, and electrolysis of zinc and lead chloride is outlined since this process would produce Cl2 gas which can be recycled and used directly in the leaching stage.

The metallurgical has been discussed sufficiently for the reader to follow the course of the experiments but the actual plant has only been described in so far as it effected metallurgical treatment, since the arrangement of such a smelter is a matter of common knowledge.The lead-roasting plant consisted of Godfrey roaster, Dwight-Lloyd maehines and Huntingdon-Heberlein pots. The usual treatment was in the Godfrey furnaces, followed by sintering in the Huntingdon- Heberlein pots. The paper is divided into two parts in the Godfrey furnaces and Huntingdon-Heberlein pots.
