PIP is regularly engaged in businesses where Greenfield Capital Projects are under- delivering on the expected business case. In most of these projects, we can identify that rigorous review has been carried out on the design and financial cost elements and substantial reporting is maintained to Boards on progress versus plan of project completion and cost. However, in all sites of this nature that we have worked at, the planning, design and execution of the operational elements or æwiringÆ of the organisation have fallen short and resulted in significant extra cost or opportunity cost (lost tonnage or quality) during start-up. When compared to the amount of planning and resources that have been poured into the capital side, the ledger on the æwiringÆ side is typically fairly sparse. This presentation outlines the importance of running a disciplined, rigorous process to prepare the human and wiring side of a start-up to ensure rapid start-ups and put the site on the pathway to high performance. It gives an outline of the rigorous process PIP has used with projects to ensure excellent start-ups.

The Mont Reed iron ore deposit, owned by ArcelorMittal, is situated approximately 140 km southwest of the Mont-Wright mine in the southern region of the Labrador Trough, Canada. Acquired by Québec Cartier Mining (QCM) in the 1960s, the Mont Reed mining property has remained unexploited due to the complex nature of the ore in the area. However, during the last years ArcelorMittal’s R&D team has been dedicated to developing a process to beneficiate the Mont Reed ore and produce high-quality pellet feed suitable for direct reduction furnaces. Extensive research revealed that achieving a good liberation degree of particles required grinding the material below 75 μm (P80 of 53 μm). To find the most effective technology for this task, a detailed comparison between ball mill and vertical stirred mill grinding was conducted. Both grinding technologies underwent detailed testing in bench-scale experiments. The ground products were comprehensively characterised, including size distribution analysis and chemical analysis per size fraction. Additionally, liberation analysis was performed using an automated scanning electron microscope (SEM). To determine the grinding specific energy, a method previously developed at Samarco (Brazil) for fine grinding of iron ores was employed. Furthermore, magnetic separation and flotation tests were conducted on the ground products. After a thorough evaluation of all the results, it was observed that both ball mill and vertical stirred mill grinding produced samples with similar physical characteristics. However, the vertical mill demonstrated higher efficiency in grinding the material. To conclude the study, an economic evaluation was conducted for both options considering various factors. Overall, ArcelorMittal’s R&D team’s dedicated efforts have brought them closer to unlocking the potential of the Mont Reed ore deposit and paving the way for its future utilisation to the production of high-quality pellet feed.

PT FreeportÆs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) Mine is the latest block cave mine within the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS).Issues with undercutting and stress concentrations at the extraction level were experienced, leading to reduced pillar strength.The extraction level-related issues became more pronounced, leading to local panel drift collapse, in an area that was over 100 per cent extraction. A review of ground conditions, panel collapse descriptions, and factors contributing to panel collapse are presented in this paper.

From modest beginnings in 1996, research into the mineral potential of New ZealandÆs Exclusive Economic Zone has progressed into a major multidisciplinary component of GNSÆs recently funded 6-year æMineral Wealth of NZ and its EEZÆ Programme. In excess of $7.5 M of research funding has been expended, plus $10 M leveraged via collaborations with NIWA (NZ), NOAA (USA), JAMSTEC (Japan), U. Kiel (Germany) and ANU (Australia), whose scientists have contributed hugely to research cruises, as well as subsequent analysis and publication. The 1999 NZAPLUME I cruise was the first research expedition to systematically locate, and chemically characterise, submarine hydrothermal venting associated with arc volcanoes of the southern part the Kermadec intra oceanic arc system. This was followed by the 2002 NZAPLUME II and 2004 NZAPLUME III cruises to the mid- and northern-sections of the Kermadec arc, respectively. Combined, these cruises have surveyed 1300 km of the volcanic chain (from Whakatane to Monowai), including 34 major volcanic centres. Together with concurrent surveys in the Tonga arc, this is now the longest continuous stretch of intra oceanic arc to be surveyed for hydrothermal emissions. Most of the volcanic centres are characterised by simple cones although 30 per cent contain caldera complexes, and compositions range from basalt through to rhyolite. Massive sulphide mineralisation has been recovered from several volcanic centres in the southern Kermadecs (Clark, Rumble II West and Brothers), suggesting the existence of significant Au and base metal bearing deposits along the arc front.

On a worldwide basis trackbound transportation is on the decline. As mining operations progress from open cast operations to underground operations, most utilise mechanised equipment. However, in South Africa hard rock mines, only a small percentage (¦10 per cent) of the production can be generated by mechanised methods and therefore trackbound mining methods will remain the dominant means to transport ore. In the Australian context there may be occasions where the nature of the orebody would dictate the use of rail transportation with the ore being transported from drawpoints by means of locomotives and hoppers. This paper focuses on horizontal rail haulage systems from the stope loading boxes to the shaft station area and will be largely based on South African experience. It is intended that this document will provide a practical guideline for mine designers and planners during the design process. The paper looks at trackbound transport systems and evaluates such items as construction and management of an underground rail haulage system. Current transportation systems for personnel, material and rock transportation are evaluated, gaps in technology highlighted, and recommendations made.

The Australian glass sand industry produces some 2.8 million tonnes per annum of silica sand, of which about 2.0 million tonnes are exported and the rest is for the domestic market. Approximate production rates for each Australian state are listed. The variety of processing methods used in the currently exploited deposits reflects the size, location, and characteristics of the various deposits and the requirement of the end market/s. The industry uses to a large extent equipment developed for the separation of mineral sands, particularly as it applies to low grade heavy mineral deposits, where low cost, high capacity and metallurgically efficient equipment has proved eminently suitable for the production of the low value glass sands. The requirements of the domestic market, as well as those of the present and potential export markets are discussed covering quality requirements, distribution channels and other factors critical to success.

Airborne geophysics and geomatics is at a crossroads as to whether it remains a viable mapping tool, both technically and commercially, and broadens its potential for new applications (eg environmental monitoring, civil engineering and precision farming). The use of small and stable multisensor aerial platforms to conduct highly flexible surveys flown at a low/reasonable cost of operation is a recurrent wish of many stakeholders in the natural resources exploration and mining industry. Through its Fly Light Airborne Geophysics research program, EXIGE and partners have pushed the development and testing of two new airborne carriers with unique capabilities for geo-surveys: GyroLAG’s gyrocopter and Infotron’s unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). These carriers are the next generation of versatile and innovative aerial vehicles for remote sensing and monitoring. They are rotary, smart tailored, ultra-high resolution manned (gyrocopter) or autonomous (UAV) airborne platforms that combine the merits of dense data sampling, accurate position location, very low clearance above ground or sea level, slow speed, interchangeable and combined multiple geo-sensors, automatic data quality control and real-time quality assurance. They also have the benefits of being highly efficient, cost-effective, commercially attractive, safe, reliable and easy to deploy and operate. Their technical specifications and multiple advantages compared to traditional aircraft and/or ground crews are presented in this paper. In North-West Nelson the Riwaka Complex, a linear basic intrusive complex, is exposed for approximately 45 km. Some 500 km south, across the Alpine Fault, a linear zone of similar but less well known basic intrusives that may be correlatives of the Riwaka Complex is exposed discontinuously for about 80 km. The Complex was emplaced at several centres along a major tensional fracture zone that developed in upper Carboniferous to Lower Permian time. This fracture zone probably formed in response to the development of a west dipping subduction zone that gave rise to the Permian volcanic arcs in east Nelson and western Southland. The Riwaka Complex contains three rock suites. The Fractionation Suite, characterized by cyclic mineral layering and small scale cumulus banding is the largest and is divided into the Ultramafic, Hornblende and Plagioclase Series, each of which is subdivided into several units. The Cumulus Gabbros represent a restricted but important suite of unusual composition, while the third suite is the late phase Diorite Suite. Except in the lower units of the Ultramafic Series sulfide mineralisation is widespread. Pyrrhotite is the dominant sulfide with lesser chalcopyrite pentlandite and pyrite. Four significant zones of sulfide accumulation are recognised and discussed in some detail. Evidence suggests that the primary magma from which the Riwaka Complex was derived was sulfur deficient. It is concluded that the sulfur content of the Riwaka Complex was derived from assimilation of sulfur rich wall rocks during intrusive processes.

Ferruginous manganese deposits have been known at Ripon Hills since the late 1950s. The main group of deposits occur in an area 6 km by 5 km and these were extensively investigated by Longreach Metals N.L. during1971 and 1972 for possible commercial exploitation.Ripon Hills is a dissectcd fault plateau 350 m above sea level formed by the uplift of a block of gently dipping Proterozoic shales, cherts, and dolomite. The plateau consists of chert breccia which is underlain by massive dolomite. The shales which are ferruginous and manganiferous overlie the chert breccia but are now only preserved, in places, in the broad depression and valleys of the plateau.The ore deposits occur as supergene replacement of the shales and were investigated by geological mapping, grid percussion and diamond drilling, and bulk beneficiation testing. Iron and manganese oxides erraticallyreplace Shale accompanied by the leaching of other minerals. The ore is composed of fine grained pyrolusite intergrown with fine grained hematite and locally containing extensively altered bixbyite and braunite. Thegangue mineral is mainly kaolin.The average grade, using a 15 per cent Mn cutoff, was 19 4 per cent Mn and 25·9 per cent Fe for a combined drill-proven, indicated, and inferred tonnage of 56,000,000 tonnes. The average depth of this mineralization from the surface is 11 m. Using a cutoff grade of 20 per cent Mn the average grade was 24·6 per cent Mn and 23·0 per cent Fe for a combined tonnage of 12,000,000 tonnes to an average depth of 8 m.The substantial drop in reserves occurs because a high proportion of the mineralized material contains less than 20 per cent Mn.It was shown that whereas the lower grade ore, despite erratic fluctuations in grade, could be beneficiated to specification grade by crushing, screening, and conductivity ore sorting, the higher grade ore could be beneficiatedto specification grade by crushing and screening only. The utilization of the higher grade ore was considered to constitute a more viable operation.There is potential for high grade manganese ore to be discovered in the Ripon Hills area at the contact of chert breccia and underlying dolomite.

Winzes are usually sunk 9 ft. 6 in. long by 6 ft. 0 in. wide and are divided into two compartments, 4 ft. 0 in. by 5 ft. 0 in. inside the timbers. The general practice is to sink the winze to a depth of from 9 to 12 ft., put in bearers and three or four rings of timber, and then erect a sinking headframe before continuing sinking operations.GENERALThe main feature governing the design of the headframe was that all parts could be transported on timber trolleys in No. 2 Shaft. Except for some minor details the structural members consist of steam pipe. Joints are sections of steam pipe welded to one member and into which the other member fits and is held in place by a 1-in. bolt. The headframe consists essentially of two bedpieces to carry the winch and to form a seat for the four legs. The legs support the sheave bearers, the tipping door and the brace.Except during tipping operations the door is in a nearly vertical position. For tipping it is lowered to an inclined position and a hook suspended from one of the bracing members of the headframe is attached to a "D" welded to the bottom of the kibble. This causes the kibble to tip when it is lowered on to the tipping door. The capacity of the kibble is 4 cubic feet.THE HEADFRAMEThe dimensions of the headframe are:Height to top of sheave .. .. 14 ft. 10 in.Distance centre to centre of legs 4 ft. 4 in.Length of bedpieces .. .. .. .. 8 ft. 9 in.The weight is approximately 2,000 lb., the tipping door and bedpieces being the heaviest members. They weigh 240 lb. and 170 lb. respectively.One compartment of the winze is decked over, and the bedpieces, which are 8 ft. 9 in. lengths of 6 in. pipe with three short lengths of plate welded to the underside, are placed over the sinking compartment, either transversely or parallel to the winze. Three 3 inch pipes act as spreaders between them.Welded to the top of each bedpiece is a 6-in. by iHn. plate 3 ft. 0 in. long with four 4-in. by 1.5-in. slots cut longitudinally at 10 in. centres. Two 10 in. by 4-in. timbers are bolted to these plates, the distance between them being adjusted to suit the holes in the winch bedplate, which is bolted to the 10-in. by 4-in. timbers.Two short lengths of 3 in. pipe are welded to each bedpiece at 4 ft. 4 in. centres. Recovery of Fine Gold Particles from Philippine Gold Deposits by Enhanced Gravity Concentration and Flotation The objective of the study is to determine the applicability of enhanced gravity concentration (EGC) and flotation for gold recovery. While gravity concentration methods have long been applied to gold ores, especially to free-milling types that requires minimal beneficiation, flotation for gold recovery has not yet taken hold as a major operation in the Philippine setting. In this study, the application of EGC and flotation for gold is applied and compared to the existing methods for gold recovery. Two samples, with assays of 7.315 and 5.333 g Au/MT (samples 1 and 2, respectively) are used for this study. These samples are subjected to mineralogical studies and is found to have a gold-particle size ranging 10 to 200 microns. To verify the separation size, the mesh-of-grind (MOG) is used as the primary parameter for experimentation. Initially, the samples are stage-crushed, ground, and subjected to EGC using a Falcon SB40 Concentrator. Based on the results, the two samples showed that recovery increases with a finer MOG. The ratio of concentration (K) decreases with a finer MOG. This shows that there should be sufficient liberation of the gold values for EGC to be effective. The effect of the enhancement is to pronounce the difference in specific gravity of the minerals, promoting better separation. This is validated by the high recovery values of 86.97 per cent and 98.73 per cent exhibited respectively for samples 1 and 2 (at 54 microns). For the flotation runs, sample 2 with an average particle size of 80 per cent passing 74 microns is examined using thiocarbamate-based collectors for roughing and subsequently exhibited a recovery of 96.32 per cent. At this point, the concentration ratio (K) is noted as an important efficiency indicator for flotation process since it yielded a very low-mass and high-metal content concentrate.

The record for autonomous haulage systems in underground mining over the past 15 years is patchy, marked by many trials and attempts, with few examples of sustained operation until relatively recently. The drivers for the introduction of this technology are variously listed as the occupational health and safety of people working in underground mines, reductions in direct operating costs and increases in productivity.This paper reviews the trends for operation of semi-autonomous and autonomous haulage achieved by underground mines and the defining features of the technology currently available. The inclusion of autonomous haulage as part of mining studies and the fundamental conditions for its successful application is discussed in the paper. The components required for an autonomous underground haulage system are outlined and the key aspects that need to support its effective implementation are examined together with their associated opportunities and risks. Special note is made of the critical role people, including executive leadership, have in ensuring the successful introduction of this technology.The paper draws on published case study material, equipment supplier information and research findings. New Zealand has been a significant producer of gold for over a century. Total recorded production is over 850 tonnes. There were three major periods of production: the first and biggest was between 1860 and 1880, the second was between 1895 and 1920 and the third was between 1930 and 1945. After 1945 gold production fell continually until 1980 when the major upward adjustment in gold price led to renewed interest. There have been important new developments in each of the known gold-rich areas: Westland, Otago and Coromandel and exploration for gold in these areas and in previously unprospected regions has reached unprecedented levels.

A unique sluicing process for recovering tailing impounded in a valley was developed by Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd., West Coast Mines, Rosebery, Tasmania.Earthmoving equipment could not be used as most of the material to be recovered was semi-fluid. A conventional sluking method was also impracticable as there was no suitable working face from which the process could be commenced.Operations started from a flat surface, using special techniques for sinking through the tailing and establishing producing working faces as the sinking process continued.After about 2 years the bottom of the dam was reached and conventional sluicing methods could be used.

Deposit-10/11A is situated in the iron rich Bailadila region of India comprising haematite ore of average grade 65 per cent Fe. The deposit production line was commissioned in the year 2002 having a capacity of 5 Mt/a. The plant has the state of the art mineral processing equipments.The ore is transported from mines to crushing plant by means of dumpers. The ore is comminuted in two stages to get 150 mm top size product and this product is transported through conveyor system and is stored in silos as feed stock for beneficiation plant. In the beneficiation plant this crushed product is wet screened in two stages to produce a product of lump (-150 + 10 mm) and fines (-10 + 3.15 mm). The product of -3.15 mm top size is fed to primary classifier for a size separation at 150 µm. The resultant product (-3.15 mm + 150 µm) is dewatered and transported to fi ne ore product stock yard through conveyor system. The minus 150 µm material from classifier overflow is fed to cyclones (508 mm cyclone battery with an apex of 65 mm) for desliming at 45 µm and to recover ultrafi nes (-150 + 45 µm). The cyclone overfl ow slimes (-45 µm) along with water is treated in lamella thickeners to recover process water. The thickener underflow material is transported to tailing pond (discharge rate is 300 m3/h at a specific gravity of 1.4) by pumping through HDPE (high density poly ethylene) pipeline and the over flow water is being recirculated. The water requirement for beneficiation is approx 1.5 m3 per ton of ore.This paper aims at identifying and quantifying the factors that affect the overall plant performance (grade and recovery) during the different seasonal variations especially in the rainy season (mid-June to end October). The effect of seasonal variations on unit operations such as milling, classification, thickening and filtration are discussed. Specific cases are presented as examples and recommendations are formulated.

In a previous paper the writer dealt -with the jasper bar formations and their relationship to the structural geology of older pre-Cambrian rocks in the goldfields districts of Western Australia (24). He has pointed out in this ahd other papers that jasper bars, or banded iron formations, banded hematite or ,magnetite quartzites, jaspilites and related banded ferruginous or non-ferruginous cherts, occur in abundan'ce in the Older Greenstone Series of Western Australia (22), (24), (26). They are considered to represent special forms of banded ferruginous sediments, and are usually fpund in the field interbedded with more or less metamorphosed pasaltic 01' andesitic lavas and tuffs, now amphibolites, together with occasional thin bands of normal pelitic sediments, which go to make up a large proportion of the Older Greenstones in thfs State (26).Great thicknesses of fiat-bedded ]:landed ferruginous cherts are also found associated with cherty' carbonate rocks; quartzites, shales and thin-bedded dolomite whicIi constit'ute the Nullagine (Pl'oterozoic) system in the northwest of Western Australia. In the Hamersley Range district these banded ferruginous chert beds are the hosts of important deposits of blue amphibole asbestos.In the paper mentioned above brief reference was> made to the importance, of geological structure in relation to economic geology, particularly in the goldfields regions of Western Australia, and it was shown that jasper bars may have an important role in the study of 'the structural geology of many of these regions. Of possibly more immediate economic importance is the part that these rocks play, both directly and indirectly, as host rocks for mineral deposits-the chief of Which are gold, iron ores, blue asbestos, and manganese ores. The blue asbestos bearing banded iron formations mentioned above are confined to the younger pre-Cambrian Nullagine formations. They have been described in detail elsewhere (23). In this paper it is proposed to discuss the economic geology of the jasper bars found in the older pre-Cambrian series.The jasper 'bars have in themselves little or no intrinsic value except perhaps some of the more highly coloured and banded varieties which may be utilised for ornamental and decorative purposes. Probably the best known of such varieties is the so-called "marble bar;" a belt of, strikingly coloured banded chert occurring just south and west of the famous town of that name (see Fig. 1t). This consists of a hard, very fine, even-grained rock with alternate individual stripes varying from the thickness of a sheet of paper up to an inch or more in width, and ranging in colour from clear white to yellow, from various shades of pink to brilliant...
