The influence of an external stress and plastic deformation on the allotropic transformation of single crystals of a Co-30.5 pct Ni alloy was investigated. Experimental results were obtained from dilatometry, X-ray diffraction, and optical and electron microscopy. The effects of stresses could be conveniently divided into three stress ranges. In range I, from 0 to about 400 g per sq mm, the specimens exhibited a multi-variant phase change on cooling and a considerable amount of retained cubic phase. In range II, from 400 g per sq mm to the elastic limit, hexagonal regions of a given orientation grew in size and the cubic phase disappeared with increasing stress level. In range III, just above the elastic limit, specimens transformed into hexagonal single crystals. It was found that plastic deformation, not applied stress, was the factor which determined whether a single-crystal product was formed. The observed macroscopic shear directions were mainly (112) on cooling, but the behavior was more complicated on heating under stress. To explain these properties of the phase change, a model based on the nucleation of partial dislocations is proposed. IT is well-known1 that, on heating, hcp cobalt transforms into an fcc arrangement by shearing on close-packed planes. The crystallographic orientation relationship of the phases is as follows: the habit plane is (OOO1)hcp ?{lll}fcc and a (1010)hcp direction is parallel to a (112)fcc direction. The temperature at which the transformation occurs in pure cobalt is around 420.C 1,2This temperature decreases with increasing nickel concentration: and at about 30 pct Ni it reaches room temperature. However, many of the transformation characteristics remain essentially the same, particularly the crystallographic features.495 A convenient way of studying the transformation is to alloy cobalt with nickel, thus avoiding the difficulties of doing experiments at the high temperatures needed to transform pure cobalt. Due to the hysteresis of the transformation it is possible to choose a Co-Ni alloy with an Ms temperature below room temperature and an A, temperature above room temperature. Either structure of such an alloy could then be studied at room temperature, depending on whether it had just been heated or cooled to room temperature. The choice of nickel is further favored by the small difference in lattice parameters between cubic cobalt and nickel and the similarity of their physical, chemical, and electronic properties. Co-Ni alloys are reported to have neither long- nor short-range order.6 The main purpose of this work was to investigate the influence of an external stress on the transformation characteristics of Co-Ni single crystals. It may be expected that slip, twinning, and transformation should have many features in common in cobalt, because the (111) planes of the cubic phase operate as slip planes when plastic deformation by slip occurs, they are the twinning planes, and they are the habit planes for the transformation. Many previous investigators7-&apos;6 have concluded that dislocations must play an important role in the nucleation and propagation of the transformation, just as they do for slip and twinning propagation. An external stress will affect their motion, and a study of its influence should yield further information about the atomic mechanism of transformation. The present work extends that of Gaunt and christian17 and Nelson and Altstette18 in both qualitative and quantitative effects of stress. The basic concept underlying all the present theories of the transformation of cobalt and Co-Ni alloys is the motion of a/6<112> partial dislocations over {1ll} planes of the cubic lattice. The ABCABC... stacking of the close-packed planes of the cubic phase can be changed into the hexagonal ABABAB... stacking by the sweeping of an a/6 <112> partial on every second plane. Twinning, on the other hand, requires a shear of a/6 <112> on each close-packed plane. The reverse transformation can be effected in a similar way by a/3 (1010) dislocations moving over every other basal plane of the hexagonal phase. Transformation theories2, 7- 12,14 differ in the details of the nucleation of the transformation and the propagation of the partial dislocations from plane to plane. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Nickel and cobalt rods supplied as 99.999 pct pure were induct ion-melted together under a vacuum of about 10-5 torr in a 97 pct alumina crucible. An alloy containing 30.5 pct Ni was found to have the desired transformation range, with an Ms near -10°C and an j4s in the vicinity of +10O°C. The ingots were swaged to &--in. rod and electron beam zone-leveled in a 10-6 torr vacuum. This procedure resulted in 12-in.-long single fcc crystal rods (designated I to VII) from each of which several tensile specimens of identical orientation were made. Chemical analysis of the bar ends indicated no contamination or gross segregation and no micro segregation was seen in electron micro-probe scans. Tensile specimens with a 9/32-in.-sq by 1-in.-long gage section were spark-machined from the rods and then electropolished or chemically polished to remove the machining damage and to provide a flat surface

The isothermal shrinkage rates of copper-powder compacts were determined in the temperature range from 760o to 1060oC. The rates for compacts fabricated from a pure spherical copper powder were compared, on the one hand, with those fabricated from a spherical powder containing a dispersion of aluminum oxide in the copper matrix and, on the other hand, with those fabricated from a pure copper powder having irregularly shaped particles. The irregular copper-powder compacts shrank much faster than the spherical copper-powder compacts and these, in turn, shrank faster than dispersion -strengthened copper -powder compacts. The experiments were run under a small external load. By varying this load, the stress dependence of the isothermal shrinkage rate could be measured for compacts from spherical-copper powders. This stress dependence was found to be approximately proportional to the 4th (dispersion-strengthened alloys) or 4.5th (pure metals) power of the stress. It is concluded that the material-trans port mechanism is due to dislocation climb rather than to Herring-Naharro creep. In this investigation the isothermal shrinkage rates of compacts made of copper powder with an average particle size of 70 g in the temperature range from 780o to 1060°C were studied. The aim of the investigation was to determine the mechanism of material transport responsible for the shrinkage of these compacts. Since the phenomenon observed in this investigation was shrinkage of compacts at high temperatures, it will be necessary to consider all the material-transport mechanisms possible in sintering. It is unlikely that evaporation and condensation, surface diffusion, or even volume diffusion of vacancies, in which surfaces of small radius of curvature are vacancy sources and those of larger radius of curvature vacancy sinks, will materially contribute to a sintering process involving shrinkage, i.e., one in which the centers of adjacent particles move towards each other. The two principal mechanisms which were considered were the so-called Nabarro-Herring mechanism and a plastic deformation mechanism by dislocation movement. Both of these mechanisms were originally conceived to explain creep, i.e., the plastic deformation of metals at elevated temperatures under a constant applied stress. The shrinking of metal-powder compacts which was studied in this investigation can be readily treated as a creep process. This means that the shrinkage rates observed are considered as creep rates under the influence of an applied stress. It is true that the stresses in sintering experiments are generally not constant but decrease continually with time, but, by considering creep rates or shrinkage rates over a relatively short time interval, the small changes in stress during this time interval can generally be neglected. Nabarro-Herring microcreep is a high-temperature deformation mechanism which is caused by a diffusional flow of vacancies from boundaries under a tensile stress towards those under a compres-sive stress. Herring1 has shown that in this type of microcreep the strain rate e is proportional to the applied stress and follows an equation of the form ma, aexp(-Q/RT) [l| where <j is applied stress, Q is the activation energy for self-diffusion, R is the gas constant, and T is the absolute temperature This type of creep can explain the shrinkage of a porous compact. The surface of the pores are subjected to the tensile stress of surface tension, while the grain boundaries are under a compressive stress also due to surface tension. Vacancies diffuse from the pore surface through the lattice to the grain boundaries, where they are eliminated. In order to maintain vacancy equilibrium at the pore surface the vacancies leaving the region of the pore surface are replenished from the volume of the pore, which means that the pores shrink.

ONE year ago, that is in January, 1923, there had not been constructed a single oil-storage tank of 55,000-bbl. or more capacity with a completely electric welded roof and bottom. Today, there are at least fifty 80,000-bbl. storage tanks completed, or nearing completion, on which both the roofs and the bottoms are electric welded. All of the following data and conclusions were obtained from observations made during the welding of tanks by the Welding Engineering Co. at Texas City, Tex., and Tonkawa and Burbank, Okla. As far as can be determined, the first electric welding on large tankage was completed in May, 1922. At that time the Empire Companies of Bartlesville, Okla., discovered a badly leaking bottom in a 55,000-bbl. tank at El Dorado, Kans. They had considered concreting this bottom, but because of the much smaller cost, decided to try electric welding; so a- contract was given the Welding Engineering Co. of Bartlesville, Okla. In this instance, no new sheets were added, the bottom being repaired by electric welding of all seams and rivets, Fig. 1. In some places where the original rivets were missing, the holes were filled by welding; patch plates were also added at certain badly worn spots. Pebble grinding was used at Lake Shore Mines in 1949. A full description of experimental evidence and test plant results was published in 1952 1 and further operating details in 1954.2 In more recent years the term autogenous grinding has been coined and is now frequently seen in the technical literature. Autogenous crushing and/or grinding covers any grinding mill in which the larger of ore are made to grind the fine pieces; the crushing and grinding may be either dry or wet. This discussion deals only with wet autogenous grinding, and only in the fine grinding part of the circuit, i.e., from 6 mesh to 92 pct -325 mesh. The term pebble milling could apply to fine autogenous grinding in which the pebbles are made from the ore itself, or it could also refer to grinding with pebbles, such as flint pebbles, from a source outside the mine.

In the last several decades, techniques of data collection have been rapidly evolving. Automated spectroscopic techniques in the chemical analysis of rocks for example have advanced to the point that we can analyze samples faster than we can grind them. Remote sensors of LANDSAT give us intensity measurements in four color bands of every acre of the U.S. every 19 days. Common depth point seismic instrumentation systems used at sea for surveying and networks of seismometers arrayed around the country for earthquake studies likewise are generating vast amounts of data. These along with many other earth science data generating systems have caused a veritable data explosion. How do we deal with these enormous amounts of geologic data presently being produced as well as those produced in the past, and to be produced in the future? There is an immediate need to acquire and utilize past and present basic data in order to address today&apos;s national earth science problems. Also data being collected and stored now must be compatible with future data in order for us to be able to undertake the wide spectrum of analysis that must be made in the future. This is a big order! In order to organize and to be able to analyze these data, the USGS has embarked on a wide ranging program of compatible data base construction and the development of computer technology, based on interactive computing, to facilitate resource assessments and analyses. These activities are analogous to two sides of a coin. One side deals with the logic, philosophy, and mechanics of information storage and retrieval; and the other side deals with the sensible application of computer technology to the treatment of data. Review of equipment, performance, and shaft design plans including head-frames for sinking and forms for lining are given. Also included are comparative data for shafts of 11 x20 ft and 193/4 x 30 ft with 756 and 666-ft depths, respectively. Advantage from curtain wall installation with "slip forms" which warrant consideration for normal lining are outlined. A preliminary review is also made of "chemical grouting" to stop water inflow leakage with Halliburton equipment and service. Two coal mine shafts recently completed in Franklin County, Ill., afford experience and accomplishment to warrant review. These shafts provide access to a tract with a potential recovery of one hundred million tons. This work provided the initial sinking by other than a contractor&apos;s organization since 1918. Four additional shafts required during the interim were sunk under contract arrangement with others. Supervisory contact and inspection afforded experience to govern planning and conduct of the recent work. TEST DRILLING Core test holes were drilled within each of the two shaft locations. Four additional cable tool holes were drilled on a radius of 700 ft from the shaft bottom to determine the coal seam elevations and govern the underground layout plans for each shaft. A graphic log of the hoist shaft test drillhole is shown by Fig. 1. A very soft sandstone was found at a depth of 16 ft. Cored recovery of the sandstone proved much weaker than the overlying compacted sand secured with coring facilities for soil recovery. Gradation from the very soft sandstone to fairly hard material occurred with the next 14 ft, extending to a depth of 30 ft. The weak character within the upper portion entailed need of adequate protection when sinking as described later. A part of the sandstone provided sufficient porosity and permeability to warrant further investigation. Adjacent cable tool drilling for temporary water supply disclosed inflow was limited to 2 gpm with a depth of 40 ft. It was increased to 12 gpm during the next 50 ft of drilling and occasioned subsequent precaution when sinking. General arrangement of facilities for sinking the hoist shaft is shown by Fig. 2. An available steel frame building was used to accommodate the hoist, compressor, shop, and shower or change room. The stiff leg derrick with 90-ft length of boom permitted removal of forms from the wood shop to the storage area or delivery within the shaft. Reinforcing steel and other needs were similarly handled, in addition to headframe erection. The headframe was placed over one end of the shaft to enable passage of forms for lining through the adjacent half next to the stiff leg derrick. IN spite of the fact that in 1944 Canada experienced a decline in production of all her leading base metals-nickel, zinc, lead, and copper; despite uncured headaches in the coal-mining industry; and cheerfully ignoring a still further drop in gold, the most valuable product of her mines, which had the lowest output of any year since 1931, the Canadian miner retains the traditional optimism of miners everywhere as he looks forward to the postwar period. Some factors should keep the Canadian mining industry from being too optimistic of the coming era of peace, but the fraternity generally holds that its confident attitude towards the future is based on sound reasons. The decline in production in the Canadian mining industry last year can be almost wholly attributed to the serious shortage of labor and the difficulty in obtaining transport and supplies in remote areas. Some falling off occurred in the demand for certain strategic metals, but the diversion of gold miners, especially, without replacements being obtainable, to direct war work or allied pursuits, was certainly the principal cause of the reduced output in 1944. But that is a situation which will right itself at the close of the conflict.

This paper presents three general approaches towards the solution of the stress distribution and the behavior of tubular connections as used in offshore well drilling structures. First, the possibilities of using plastic models and photoelasticity techniques in evaluating the stress distribution in gusset plate connections are analyzed. The results of photoelastic studies on the stress distribution in the in-plane gusset plate of two-dimensional joints are presented. The influence of the configuration of the gusset plate (with and without cut-outs) is discussed. Second, the paper deals with recent developments and applications of computer programs to analyze connections with directly inter-welded tubes and with gusset plates. The possibilities and limitations of these programs are discussed. Stress patterns analyzed with these programs are presented for different joint configurations. Finally, the basic test procedures and results of a test on a tubular joint under static and alternating loads are discussed. INTRODUCTION The effective design of tubular connections as encountered in offshore well drilling towers or floating platforms has been complicated basically by the radial flexibility of the tube walls. This flexibility is a source of severe stress concentrations which can initiate an early failure of these joints. In an attempt to reduce the influence of the wall flexibility of the column tube, certain joints are presently designed by inter-welding the incoming branch members. In those designs, the force acting normal to the chord tube can be reduced considerably. A second group of joints incorporate gusset plates or stiffening rings to stiffen the column wall and to distribute the incoming branch member forces over a larger part of this wall. A third approach to improve the stress distribution in a tubular joint is to increase the wall thickness of the column member. This can be achieved by simply applying a thicker wall section in the vicinity of the joint. A fourth possibility to restrain the radial flexibility of the tube wall is to fill the column member with concrete. Also, a single, cast steel seat welded to the column tube can be used to improve the stress distribution in this wall. Although all these designs improve, in general, the state of stress in the column wall, the altered stiffness often causes the development of critically stressed areas in the web members. At the same time the actual design in most instances is decisively influenced by the site which governs the depth and controls the forces produced by waves, earthquakes and ice flow. Also, the towing, erection and foundation requirements of offshore structures can affect the actual design selection. Because of the complexity of the structural configuration of tubular joints, the stress analysis of these connections has necessarily been based on simplified and often crude assumptions. For the earlier and smaller type of connections with about 4-ft diameter column sections, the primary problem was to evaluate the relative stiffness of the column wall section and the load transfer between joint members. Due to the recent developments of offshore drilling structures with increasingly larger connections (e.g., column diameter. 32 ft; web members, 8.5 ft) this problem has become even more critical. One design philosophy for such large joints follows a member-to-member connection with radially heavy reinforced column sections. This radial stiffness can be attained by closely spaced and intensively stiffened horizontal diaphrams together with vertical stiffeners. A second solution incorporates a concrete-filled section between the outer and inner walls of the column tube. Another philosophy considers large gusset-plated joints. The problem in these joints is to develop an effective load transfer between the branch tubes and the gusset plate and to minimize the stress concentrations in the member walls as effectively as possible. Several concepts are followed to achieve this gradual transfer between web-member walls and gusset plates. Because the number of joints in these huge platforms is limited compared to the over-all size, a proper design of these joints is even more important than was the case for the many joints in the smaller, but multi-legged towers. A failure of one of those ultra-large joints could well cause the complete collapse of such a structure. Under these circumstances an accurate analysis of the large joints is of the greatest importance, together with information regarding the expected behavior of such joints under critical alternating load conditions. Recent applications of photoelastic model techniques have proved to be quite effective in evaluating the elastic behavior of such joints. Although a complete study of such connections is quite well possible with present-day photoelastic techniques, it might often be feasible and necessary to limit the objectives and to restrict these investigations to the study of a specific aspect of the joint. Another very promising avenue of approach to solve the complex stress pattern in these connections seems to be the recent development of digital computer programs. A method is described whereby the behavior of the front is approximated when gas is injected into a thick reservoir having reasonably homogeneous properties. The method is applied to the Abqaiq field of Saudi Arabia. The producing member is the Arab-D, a high-permeability calcarenite which has no continuous betlding planes. Field performance indicates the injected gas to be partially miscible with the reservoir oil because gas volume factors experienced are lower than those predicted by the gas law. Eqlrilibril~m calculations confirnz ihis and also show that the volume factor may vary appreciably, depending on the relative quantities of oil and gas in contact in the reservoir; consequently, volutnetric balances are made for the purpose of determining the behavior of the gas volume factor during injection history. The effect of gravity segregation on position and shape of the gas front is approximated by dividing the producing section into three zones vertically and tracing the movement of the average interface in each zone, with counterflow of oil and gas taking place betweell zones behind the front. This results in a gas front that advances more rapidly along the top of [he formation than along the base, producing an "umbrella" effect in cross section that becomes more pronounced as the front progresses. The calculations cover the gas-injection period of Abqaiq field history through 1958, and the position of the gas front is plotted at one-year intervals. Finally, some comparisotls between the calcrlated fronial position and the gas-oil contact as Measured by neutron logs are made. INTRODUCTION Fig. 1 is a structure contour map of the Abqaiq field. For analytical purpcses, the field has been divided into two areas designated A and B, as shown on the map. Gas injection into Area A was begun in early 1954 into two wells located near the crest of the structure on the north-south axis of the anticline. During the period covered by this paper, the average injection rate has been 122 MMscf/D with a maximum sustained rate of 160 MMscf/D. The reservoir pressure has been maintained at 2,450 psig since start of gas injection. The reservoir originally was undersaturated but, prior to pressure maintenance, the pressure was drawn below the bubble point in most of the Area A section, creating an in-place free-gas saturation of 8 per cent at the crest of the structure. The average critical gas saturation is 13 per cent established by laboratcry core tests. That the entire reservoir remained below critical gas saturation prior to gas injection is borne out by the fact that none of the crestal wells have exhibited high gas-oil ratios during production history. The Area A reservoir is a carbonate section about 200-ft thick having average porosity and permeability of the order of 22 per cent and 500 md, respectively. Some large blocks of acreage were leased in Marion and Clay counties near the central part of the Illinois structural basin. Production of oil in the state totaled 4,305,000 bbl., a decrease of 4 per cent from that of 1934 There was some curtailment of production in the early part of 1935 but none after April 30 as shown in the following table. In certain areas of the New Cornelia pit, considerable secondary blasting is necessary to reduce oversized boulders, formed from primary blasting, to pieces which will pass the 41/2-cu yd dippers on the shovels. Some of the boulders are &apos;dobied, but when time permits they are blockholed and blasted. In most instances one hole drilled to a depth of 2 to 3 ft and blasted with 1/3 to 1/2 of a stick of powder will break a boulder satisfactorily. Blockholing is normally done by using a jackhammer of the 55-lb class, 1-in. round drill steel, and detachable steel bits, 2-in. gauge when new. A bit change is usually made after the completion of each hole. The use of light drilling equipment in blockholing is desirable, both from the standpoint of safety and ease of doing the work, and when it was seen there was a possibility of using a lighter jackhammer through the use of tungsten-carbide bits and at the same time get at least the same drilling efficiency as with the standard equipment, it was decided to test tungsten-carbide bits. The claims for long life of the bits and footage drilled before resharpening gave hopes of eliminating much of the delay time in changing bits which is unavoidable with the use of steel bits. and thus gain in actual drilling time.

CAPTAIN JOHN H. BALLAMY John H. Ballamy, Captain on the Regimental Staff of the 103d Engineers, was killed near Fismes, on August 9, 1918. Captain Ballamy was born at Plymouth, Pa., in 1886 and graduated from the High School of that town in 1903. In the following year he began work as a coal miner, and at the same time began the study of mining engineering in the evening and any other spare time. He continued this diligent and energetic practice for many years. For sixteen years he continued in the employment of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad Company&apos;s coal mining department, first as a practical miner, next as rodman on the survey corps, of which he soon became chief, then draftsman and mining engineer in the company&apos;s office. In January, 1916, he was promoted to the position of district engineer in charge of mining engineering work. He became a member of this Institute in September, 1917. CAPTAIN JOHN H BALLAMY. Captain Ballamy&apos;s military experience began at the same time as his engineering practice. He was a charter member of Company A, Engineers, N. G. P., which was organized ten years ago. He saw service on the Mexican border as First Lieutenant of this Company, and remained in that position until November, 1916. In July, 1917, he was again called into service and was sent to Camp Hancock, Ga., with the 103d Regiment of Engineers. Before joining this regiment he attended a school for officers at Fort Sill, Okla., where he received special training in field fortifications. In December, 1917, he was commissioned Topographical Captain on the Regimental Staff, and in April, 1918, preceded his regiment by about six weeks to France, where he again attended an officers&apos; training school. He rejoined his regiment on July 15, near Chateau Thierry and was killed near Fismes on August 9, 1918.

The fundamental problem concerning the fracture of both crystalline and noncrystalline solids is the divergence between the actua1 and the theorcticallY computed fracture stresses; the stress required for fracture, computed from the forces between atoms, is many times that actually observed with commcrcinlly available materials. Computatiolls have been made,,2 indicating that the theoretical fracture stress should be from 100 to 1000 times that actually observed. There are other incidental problems that have arisen, perhaps the most importallt of which is the problem of size effect often observed in the measurement of the fracture stress of non-metallic solids, such as glass. Another effect conccrns the relation between deformation and the stress required for fracture, Experiments recently made with pearlitic steels indicate that the tensile fracture stress increases with increasing tensile deformation and decreases with increasing prior com-pressive deformation, This marked ani-sotropy of the effect of deformation on the fracture stress is in contrast with the essential isotropy of the flow stress. Early experiments on rock salt crystals by Joffe, et al.3 have illustrated the effect of tensile strain in increasing the tensile stress required for fracture. A consistent theory must be constructed that will explain not only the divergence, of the measured fracture stress from the theoretical value, the size effect, and the ergence of deformation; but will also explain and predict the effects of combined stress, of temperature, of strain rate, and of metallurgical structure. With respect to this last variable, it has now been relatively well established that the carbide particle is the clement of structure controlling the fracture of steels. In steels carbide particles vary in shape from plates to spheroids. It has been found that not only docs the magnitude Of the Fracture stress depend upon the size and shape of these particles. but also its dcpendencc upon strain is affected by changes in &apos;hap&apos; an&apos; size Or the particles. The precipitate resulting from the age hardening Of duralumin also modifies the fracture stress of this alloy. Nonmetallic inclusions greatly lower the fracture stress of all metals. The magnitude of the lowering depends 0&apos; the size and shape of the included particles. In glass, the major source of the low fracture stress has been fairly conclusively demonstrate&apos; by Griffith4 &apos;0 arise from real flaws or cracks present in the material. He showed that the stress concentration at the end of a defect was of suficient magnitude to raise the stress at this location to a value comparable with the theoretical strength Of the material. If the cracks were reduced in size, Griffith showed that the observed fracture slrength the by virtue Of the decrease in stress concentration. He also pointed out that cracks disposed perpendicularly to the applied tensile stress would be more effective in lowering the fracture

In a survey of the effects of heat treatment on the comminution of various rocks, it was found that unusual size distributions often characterize the broken products, and that this is related to a great increase in intergranular fracture1. It is the purpose of the present paper to contribute to an understanding of this effect. In a thesis by one of use, critical consideration was given to many mechanisms which could conceivably be responsible for the increased intergran-ular fracture. It was shown that neither gross chemical changes nor intergranular corrosion are required. Among non-chemical mechanisms the most likely appeared to be (1) Uneven expansion due to thermal gradients, giving spalling (2) In a manner similar to that prevailing in metals, the appearance at high temperature of intergranular weakness. (3) Unequal thermal expansion of adjacent grains. Experiments were designed and conducted to permit a choice among the many alternative mechanisms and in particular among the three listed here. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS Tests were made on the materials listed in Table 1. Of each material, only lumps similar in composition and grain size were used. The three marbles listed in Table 1 were analyzed to assure that their chemical compositions did not differ greatly (Table 2). On the basis of the chemical analyses, of differential thermal analyses, and of X-ray powder diffraction patterns, it appeared that the marbles were very similar except for their grain sizes.

A detailed numerical analysis has been made of the equilibrium configuration of partial dislocations in a blocked deformation twin under an externally applied stress. Twins made up of both pure screw and pure edge partials have been considered. The components of stress in the vicinity of the twin tip associated with each of these configurations have been plotted. It has been found that at some critical degree of oblateness the shear stress fields of the blocked screw or edge twin can both sPontaneously nucleate slip, whereas only the component of stress oxx about the edge twin can nucleate and propagate cracks. TWINNING becomes a predominant mode of plastic deformation at low temperatures and/or high strain rates. Fig. l(a) shows what must be the first step in the formation of a deformation twin, namely the formation of a loop of imperfect dislocation bounding a stacking fault. In an fcc crystal the partial dislocations have Burgers vectors of the type 1/6 a,(112) and the fault is of the intrinsic type while in the bcc crystal the partials have Burgers vectors of the type ao(lll). The stacking sequence of (111) planes in a perfect fcc crystal is given by ABC ABC, and so forth, and in one which contains a twin by ABCABACBA, and so forth. It is apparent that the stacking fault and twin give rise to no mistakes associated with adjacent close-packed planes; however, with respect to second-neighbor close-packed planes the faulted crystal has twice as many mistakes as the twin. The energy of the twin boundary may thus be taken to be one-half that of the intrinsic fault boundary. In the case of the bcc crystal the stacking sequence of (112) planes is given by ABCDEFABCD, and so forth, in a perfect crystal, by ABCDCDEFA, and so forth, in a crystal which contains a fault, and by ABCDCBAF, and so forth, in one which contains a twin. An analysis similar to that applied in the fcc crystal shows that both the fault as well as the twin involve no neighbor violations across adjacent planes. However, there are twice as many violations across second-neighbor (112) planes associated with the fault as compared to that of the twin. Thus once again the energy of the twin boundary may be taken as one-half that of the fault. It is important to note that, unlike the fcc, the faults in the bcc crystal involve first nearest-neighbor violations and are thus expected to be of much higher energy than those in fcc crystals. A more detailed analysis of the material discussed above can be found in Ref. 1. To a good approximation then, the lenticular twin shown in Fig. l(b) can be generated by adding partial dislocation loops on successive (111) planes for fcc crystals or (112) planes for bcc crystals in the manner shown, with no additional expenditure of chemical energy other than that required for the fault shown in Fig. l(a). In practice, deformation twins are much more extended than that shown in Fig. l(b) and more closely resemble one shown schematically in Fig. l(c). It is readily apparent that the free energy of the twin and matrix are identical. In those cases where the partials lead to a structural change, the free energy of the material contained within the dislocation array is lower than that of the matrix and we have the so-called martensite transformation. The present investigation is the first in a series of five major theoretical-experimental efforts which will deal with the static and dynamic behavior of twin nucleation and growth. INTRODUCTION What is automation? Why automate? Webster&apos;s New Collegiate Dictionary defines automation as "the automatically controlled operation of an apparatus, process, or system by mechanical or electronic devices that take the place of human organs of observation, effort, and decision." This definition gives an implied answer to the second question, "Why automate?" Automation, automatic control devices, and process control equipment receive their justification in supplementing or replacing manpower, which results in decreased operating costs. In the past, processes were operated with the minimum amount of instruments needed merely to guide operators. Processes were manually con- trolled by the operator on the basis of simple temperature, pressure, flow, and level indications on a panel. Today the tendency is to design a new plant to operate in a fully automatic manner according to a preset pro- gram utilizing a minimum of manpower. In addition to this direct cost reduction in manual labor, increased equipment capacity results from uniformity of flow and uniform control of process variables. This control eliminates or minimizes surges and permits equipment to be operated at or near its ultimate capacity and, for a given material throughput, permits the use of smaller process equipment. Automatic control, therefore, be it in the field of coal processing or in any industrial field, is simply a problem of economics. Control equipment is justified in terms of its contribution toward increasing productivity, increasing profit margins, or producing a new and salable product at a profit. Instruments and control devices can be divided into two general groups: (1) units which measure and (2) units which both measure and control a process variable.

AT its meeting on May 21, the Board of Directors approved the recommendations submitted by President Lovejoy and named a nominating committee for the year that is especially well distributed as to major technical interest and as to geography. As may be seen from the list published herewith, two come from the East, two from the Midwest, and three from the far West. Mr. Linton, the chairman, has been a valued member of the Institute for 36 years. A memorandum drawn up by Paul D. Merica, representing the A.I.M.E., and W. R. Barclay, representing The Institute of Metals of Great Britain, setting forth a reciprocal plan for special memberships in each Institute for members of the other, was discussed. Both societies already have formally approved the plan in principle and Dr. Merica was clothed with full authority to agree on a few small details that have not been settled, and conclude the arrangement in behalf of the Institute.
