Geological problems are approached from a geometrical (space relations) viewpoint, a kinematical (time sequence) viewpoint, or a dynamical viewpoint. The first two require sound training in conventional geology and in field methods. The third approach requires a solid foundation of chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Modern training for geologists should include close integrltion of basic sciences with geological principles. Introduction Our knowledge of the earth has increased tremendously during the last half century. We know more about its surface configuration, the distribution of its natural resources, the proccssion of living forms that inhabited it in the past, the chemical composition of its oceans, the areal distribution of its surface rocks, the movements of its atmosphere, and so on. Not only do we know more facts about the earth, but we have a better understanding of the processes that take place on and within it, such as the nature of earthquakes, the thermodynamics of the atmosphere, the chemical equilibria involved in the formation of igneous rocks, the mechanics of stream flow, the dynamics of the earth's origin, and so on. Many sciences contributed to the sum total of this knowledge, including such established disciplines as geology, geography, physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology. Out of this accumulation of new knowledge grew also a group of new sciences, such as seismology, oceanography, meteorology, volcanology, hydrology. Collectively these latter are known as the geophysical and geochemical sciences, and to a large extent they began as branches of geology. Until the turn of the century, for example, the study of earthquakes (seismology) was a part of geology, although as early as 1846 Mallet, a physicist, had suggested that the subject could be investigated by elastic-wave theory. Comparatively little progress was made along these lines until the seismograph was developed near the turn of the century; since then, additional earthquake data have accurnul~ted rapidly, but more important, the interpretation of these data essentially has kept pace with their accumulation. In similar fashion, meteorology was generally considered a branch of geology as recently as one or two decades ago. Considerable progress had been made in such aspects as weather forecasting, but the science dates its recent rapid rise from the year 1911, when Bjerknes first applied the principles of dynamics to the analysis of air masses. The rapid development of such disciplines as oceanography, volcanology and hydrology was due in part to the application of principles of chemical equilibrium, of dynamics, and of thermodynamics to earth problems, by men who were essentially physicists or chemists by training. The last half century, therefore, and particularly the last two decades, saw the influx of numerous chemists and physicists into the realm of the earth sciences. The composition of the coexisting phases in the methane-ethane-n-pentane system was determined at 100°F. This was accomplished by withdrawing samples of the coexisting phases under isobaric-isothermal conditions. The relative amount of each of the components present in the liquid and gas phases was determined by conventional analytical fractionation methods. The phase behavior of this system approximates that estimated from generalized correlations which take into account the influence of the nature and amount of each of the components present upon the equilibrium. It was found that for particular pressures and temperatures the equilibrium constant of each of the components was influenced significantly by the composition of the system and this effect was more pronounced at the lower pressures for methane than for the components of greater molecular weight. However, at the higher pressures approaching the maximum two-phase pressure for the system at this temperature the composition markedly influences the equilibrium constants of all the components at a particular pressure and temperature. The results of this study are presented in graphical and tabular form. However, these results do not establish the influence of the nature and amount of the other substances making up a multi-component system upon the gas-liquid equilibrium constant of any one component. A preliminary correlation on the basis of values for binary systems was made2 utilizing such experimental information as was available. However, there is need for much additional information regarding behavior in systems containing more than two components. Study of the phase behavior of ternary systems offers a feasible attack upon the determination of the influence of composition as well as of pressure and temperature upon the several equilibrium constants concerned. An investigation of the phase behavior of the methane-propane-n-pentane system at 100°, 160°, and 220°F was reported.".' This work served to illustrate the marked influence of concentration of the other components upon the equilibrium constants. Variations of as much as 50 pct in the equilibrium constants for methane for fixed temperature and pressure were observed in regions remote from the critical state. Likewise there was a marked variation in the equilibrium constants of propane and n-pentane as a result of changes in the composition. These results indicated the desirability of investigating additional ternary systems. The present paper deals with a study of the methane-ethane-n- pen-tane system at 100°F, which is similar in many respects to the work upon the meth-ane-propane-n-pentane system cited above.

In quantitative interpretation of electrical logs the presence of clay minerals introduces an additional variable which further complicates an already complex problern. Although recognizing the difficulties introduced as a result of the heterogeneity of natural sediments and despite the present incomplete state of knowledge regarding electrochemical behavior of shales, dissemirzated clay minerals and concentrated electrolytes, it was felt that useful empirical correlations might be obtained from experimental investigation. Six typical sandstone formations, having a wide variety of petrophysical properties, were selected for the study. Approximately 45 samples from each formation were selected to satisfactorily represent the range of pore size distribution within the particular formation, As a matter of general interest, four limestone formations were also included in the investigation. Previously proposed equations relating to resistivity, SP and interrelationship of the two phenomena have, where possible, been tested with data obtained in this investigation. These equations do not satisfactorily describe experimental behavior of samples through all degrees of shaliness or throughout the range of brine solution resistivities normally encountered in logging practice. An empirical equation has been developed which quantitatively relates formation resistivity factor to satirrnting solution resistivity, porosity, and "effective clay content." This relation is indicated to be uniformly applicable to clean or shaly reservoir rocks. It is shown that both the SP and resistivity phenomena of shaly samples are related to the sample cation exchange capacity per unit pore volume. The independent chemical determination of this parameter is thus a means of determining the "effective clay content" of samples. Some implications regarding theory and electric log interpretation of shaly sands are discussed. INTRODUCTION The use of electrical resistivity logs as a means for estimating formation porosity is based upon the original work of Archie1. It was shown by empirical methods that the resistivity of a rock, when 100 per cent saturated with brine solution, could be related to rock porosity through the equation, F = Ro/ RW = f-m.......(1) where F, the formation resistivity factor, is defined as the ratio of the resistivity of the 100 per cent water saturated rock, Ro, to the saturating solution resistivity, Rw; f is the ratio of pore volume to bulk volume; and m is the slope of the average line when the data are plotted on log-log paper. This relation was established for relatively shale-free formations containing water having high salt concentrations, and under these conditions F may be considered constant for a given rock sample. Applications of Eq. 1 to interpretation of logs of shale-free formations has been quite successful when satisfactory formation water resistivity data could be obtained. The most readily available means of estimating formation water resistivity is the self-potential log. Conventional methods of SP log interpretation involve correct.

A new approach to the measurement of the size distribution of particulate structures imbedded in opaque bodies is developed. The method is based upon the assumption of a general two-parameter distribution curve, and the estimation of these two parameters from three well-known counting measurements made upon metallogvaphic sections. The total number of particles in the system is also a product of the analysis. Application of the method with the assumption of the logarithmiconorma1 disfribution function is developed in detail. A complete description of the geometry of a particulate structure requires the determination of the size distribution of particles. The problem of estimating the size distribution of particles of a particular phase in a multiphase system, or the grain-size distribution in a homogeneous system, has been approached by many investigators.'-'0 All of the solutions proposed by these investigators share the following characteristics. a) A minimum of several hundred particle sections in the microstructure must be examined, and some characteristic dimension recorded, such as area,3'5 intercept length,6"9 or diameter.1'2'4'10 b) The resulting data must undergo a series of fairly complex calculations to generate the empirical histogram which describes the size distribution in three dimensions. c) In order to manipulate the result, the histogram must be fitted to some assumed mathematical formula, using the attendant statistical procedures. d) With two notable exceptions,8,10 the particles must be spherical. The measurements and calculations involved are in general very tedious and time-consuming, with the logical result that much effort has been expended in the development of equipment which will perform these tasks automatically and semiautomati-cally.9,11-15 considerable success has been achieved in this area, but the equipment is in general expensive, and usually places stringent requirements On the quality of microstructure which can be reliably analyzed. In laboratories which do not possess such equip- ment, the analysis of geometry is usually limited to measuring total properties of the microstructures, such as volume fraction and interfacial area, because the measurements required are much simpler to make. The determination of size distributions rarely is undertaken. The development which is presented in this paper permits the estimation of size distributions of three-dimensional structures from the same simple counting measurements which are required to determine the surface area and volume fraction of the particulate structure, and one other counting measurement. The basic approach that is used is to assume a general mathematical form for the distribution, which is described by two parameters (as the normal distribution is described by assigning values to the mean and the standard deviation), and then estimate these two parameters from the results of the counting measurements. The introduction of a third counting measurement also permits the evaluation of the number of particles per unit volume, Nv.

THE present program of increased production of armament and lend-lease material for mechanized war has created a problem for the shops that must do the machining. They have naturally turned to the steel producers to provide them with a steel that can be accurately machined with the greatest possible speed. The adding of sulphur to steel as an aid to machinability has long been practiced; however, it may cause red shortness in rolling and may result in billets with seams and cracks, which must be removed before rolling can be continued. This conditioning of billets slows down production and adds to the cost of making steel. Experience with various grades of sulphur steel made to different specifications has shown that Bessemer sulphur steels roll better than similar grades made in the open hearth, and also that low-carbon steels that are open or semi-killed as tapped roll better than completely deoxidized or killed steels. This has led to the belief that oxygen plays an important part in the rolling qualities of sulphur-bearing steels. It is generally held that the red shortness of sulphur steels is due to the low melting point of the sulphide compounds that separate out at the grain boundaries when the steel solidifies. At the rolling temperature of steel these sulphide compounds melt and cause cracking. ADDING SULPHUR AS A SULPHITE These difficulties can be avoided if sulphur is introduced into the steel by means of an anhydrous sulphite, such as sodium sulphite or sodium bisulphite, which-upon decomposition-forms sulphur dioxide. It is assumed that, in this case, the oxygen of the sulphur dioxide forms part of the sulphide inclusions in the steel, and raises their solidification temperature enough so that the formation in the steel of a low-melting eutectic is prevented. The result is the prevention of hot shortness and a more uniform distribution of inclusions. Fig, I shows photomicrographs of steels made with sulphur, while Fig, 2 illustrates the structure of steels made with sodium bisulphite. These samples were cut from the steels as cast-that is, before rolling and were polished and lightly etched to bring out the grain boundaries. Fig. I shows that sulphide inclusions segregate more or less at the grain boundaries, and it can be seen how the continuity of these low-melting inclusions would cause red shortness. Fig. 2 shows that the sulphide inclusions are more or less uniformly distributed throughout the matrix. This arrangement of inclusions has no apparent effect on the rolling qualities of a steel. This statement has been substantiated by the observation of the rolling of over 6000 tons of steel made with a sulphite addition. The I phase was discovered by Bardos, Malik, Spiegel, and Beck1 in the V-Ni-Si system at 1100°C and in the Mn-Co-Si and Mn-Ni-Si systems at 1000°C. Kuzma and Hladyshevskii2 and Kuzma, Hladyshevskii, and cherkashin3 have reported a new phase, which they named the S phase, in the Mn-Co-Si and the Mn-Ni-Si systems at 800°C at approximately the I phase compositions. The powder diffraction diagrams of the I and S phases, compared by Bardos el al.,1 are related but show distinct differences in relative intensities. Professor Paul A. Beck kindly sent us a specimen of the (v-Ni-Si) I phase for single-crystal study. Precession and Weissenberg diagrams taken with a tiny single-crystal fragment showed that the structure is monoclinic with a large unit cell. The cell dimensions were refined from a powder diffraction diagram taken with CrKa radiation in a 57.3-mm camera with our computer program LSCELP4 using only the indices of those reflections that were observed on Weissenberg diagrams (hnl, with n = 0 through 9 and n = 12) and precession diagrams (Okl, lkl, Izk0, hkl, hk2). Table I shows the agreement obtained between the l/d values calculated with the final values for the cell dimensions and the l/d values observed by Bardos et al .1 for I(V42Ni33Si25), by US for I(V41Ni36Si23), and by Kuzma and Hladyshevskii2 for S(MnpCoSi). The powder patterns contain many broad and diffuse lines. In fact practically all powder lines observed are near-superpositions of several reflections. The refinement program is not set up to handle several reflections contributing to one observed line: the position of each line is refined with the aid of one set of indices only. The final values for the cell dimensions were obtained from the lines of strong or medium intensity with the indices indicated by asterisks in Table I: a0 = 13.403(6), bo = 23.336(15), co = 9.129(6)A ß = 99.11(6) deg The standard deviations (given in parentheses) are those calculated by the refinement program from least-squares theory and do not take into account that the lines included in the refinement may not have been correctly indexed in every case or that the position of a line may also be partly determined by the overlapping reflections. The agreement between the calculated and observed I phase patterns is fairly good, although some discrepancies occur. Not all observed lines could be indexed with the incomplete set of sin-

THE opinion has been widely held that the corrosion of alpha brass occurs by the selective solution of zinc. As late as 1939, Fink1 and Evans2 suggested that in the initial stage of the corrosion the selective solution of zinc produces copper-rich areas, which subsequently act as cathodes that facilitate the deposition of copper. Previously Abrams3 had shown that most of the copper found on corroded brass was redeposited and not residual, although he did not consider the nature of the initiation of the corrosion process. Enough data exist to indicate that any metal surface is sufliciently heterogeneous to provide the anodes and cathodes necessary for the initiation of corrosion .4,5 Thus, for alpha brass we need postulate not an initial selective solution of zinc, but only the existence of local differences in electrochemical potential. The heterogeneity responsible for potential differences may arise from oxide and other films as well as from alloy concentration gradients. Even though selective corrosion may be possible in some alloy systems, previous data on alpha brass as well as the experimental work reported in this paper do not require this supposition. Bengough and May,6 in a discussion of Abrams' paper, first suggested the addition of small amounts of arsenic (0.03 per cent) to alpha brass to prevent the redeposition of copper (dezincification). This suggestion was later substantiated by Nixon.7 In their studies of the inhibiting influence of arsenic, Evans and Fink were led to the selective-solution hypothesis in order to explain the initial corrosion of such alloys. "I hey believed that an arsenic film covered anode areas and prevented the formation of copper-rich spots capable of acting as cathodes for the deposition of copper. They (lid not consider, however, the mechanism by which the arsenical film was formed. Bengough and May,8 in another publication, suggested that the commonly found gray or black arsenical film may act to: (1) carry oxygen to the brass surface, (2) increase the discharge potential of copper on brass, (3) precipitate cuprous chloride from colloidal suspension in chloride solutions. Masing9 assumed that the film found upon arsenical brass was metallic arsenic. His measurements of hydrogen overvoltage of bulk arsenic led hint to believe that the inhibition of dezincification occurs because the overvoltage of a brass surface is lowered by the arsenic film. He reasoned that this film would permit the more rapid reduction of hydrogen at the cathode, which would prevent the redeposition of copper. In a recent paper,10 we have pointed out that the film formed (luring the corrosion of arsenical brass and copper in stagnant solutions is essentially arsenious oxide (AS208)

Since the foregoing paper (see p. 387) was printed, I have received the decision of Judge William E. Church, of the first District Court of Dakotah, in the case of Michael Duggan et al. v. John H. and Frank J. Dnvey (Silva Terra—Sitting Bull case), published in full in the Black Hills Weekly Pioneer of August 9th, 1584. The journal mentioned gives also several interlocutory decisions rendered in earlier stages of the case; but I shall quote here only so much of the final decision as bears upon the .construction of the Revised Statutes concerning the apex, the end-lines, and the extra-lateral mining right, together with a sufficient statement of the facts of the case to explain the scope of the decision. " This is an action in equity, brought in the first instance to restrain a threatened trespass by the defendants upon certain mining property in the possession of the plaintiffs, known as the ' Silver Terra' claim ; the allegation being that the defendants were about to enter, through underground workings, the ground of the plaintiffs, and remove therefrom valuable bodies of silver ore. " The answer of the defendants, admitting the acts constituting the alleged threatened trespass, further averred that they had, in fact, at the time complained of, reached and passed, in their underground workings, throngh and beyond the vertical side-line of the Silver Terra claim, and therenpon justified the acts complained of, and claimed the right to pursue their workings into and through the Silver Terra ground, by virtue of their alleged proprietorship of a vein, lode, or ledge of rock in place, hearing silver, having its top or apex within the lines of a certain other mining claim called the ' Sitting Bull,' of which they claim to be the owners, which vein, lode, or ledge extended in a continnons body of mineral-bearing rock from such top or apex to the ground in controversy, and constituted the body of ore in dispute; and that it was in the pursuit of this vein, lode, or ledge in its downward course that they had passed beyond the vertical side-lines of the Sitting Bull claim, and for some hundreds of feet beyond, into the ,ground in controversy " Subsequently, a supplemental complaint was filed, setting up the entry into plaintiffs' ground by the defendants, and their claim of right to do so, and asking fnrther relief by a decree restraining the assertion of such claim, and quieting the title of plaintiffs. "The case was tried before the court without a jnry..... " Custer hill, upon which these claims are located, is situated in the village of Galena, in Bare Butte mining district, in this county. THE first paper1 of this series described a technique of careful surface preparation by means of which reproducible results may be obtained from potential measurements of the behavior of tin in carbonate solutions with a pH range from 8.4 to 11.2. It then went on to establish the behavior of pure tin electrodes under these conditions and showed that the metal remains active at all times, though the steady potential attained after several hours decreases from I.I2[t] volts at a pH of 12.6 to 0.6 volts at a pH of 8.4. This behavior may serve as a norm with which all other data can be compared. In the second paper,2 small amounts of other anions were added to the carbonate solutions and the conclusion was reached that the common impurities encountered in alkaline materials packaged in tin do not increase corrosion. In fact, in some cases these anions may actually promote the formation of protective films. The present paper rounds out this survey by presenting data on the influence of cations added to the carbonate solutions, as well as the effect of alloy additions to the tin. In many cases the potential data are supplemented with weight-loss measurements. Information is also presented on the effects of some additional anions, the influence of gases above the electrolyte, the behavior of high-purity tin, and the effect of atmospheric oxidation on the corrosion resistance of the above-named alloys. Analysis of the entire body of data discloses some general rules applicable to corrosion in carbonate solutions. The experimental methods used are the same as those previously described. EXPERIMENTAL DATA Cations.-The carbonates of the cations K+, Li+, NH4+, which are soluble, were studied in the same way as the anions, by adding 0.01 mol of the metal carbonate to one liter of 0.2 M sodium carbonate solution, pH 11.2, or to 0.1 M sodium bicarbonate, pH 8.4. The other metallic carbonates are only slightly soluble, of the order of 0 7-3 mols per liter or less, and the sodium carbonate solutions were saturated by adding excess reagent several days before the experiment, shaking frequently, and filtering just before use. The chemicals were c.p. grade in each case except the indium salt. This salt was prepared by solution of the metal in hydrochloric acid and precipitation by addition of Na2CO3. These cations may be divided into two classes, according to their effect on the potential behavior of the tin: (I) normal, (2) passive. To offer a basis of comparison, curves I of Figs. SYSTEMATIC investigations of the Fe-Ga system have been reported only very recently."' The maximum solid solubility of gallium in a-Fe is nearly 50 at. pet at 900°C. However, from Ref. 1, it was not evident that the a-Fe solid solution could be retained successfully beyond 17.38 at. pet Ga by solid-state quenching. The present investigation reports the retention of a-Fe solid solution at 50 at. pet Ga by quenching from the liquid. An ordered phase of CsC1-type B2) structure was observed between 34 - 50 at. pet Ga. Since it was considered very probable that the CsCl structure would occur at high temperatures, alloy filings were also quenched by the conventional quenching technique. In addition to the CsCl phase, a second ordered phase of BiF3-type (DO3) structure was found in the range 25 - 30 at. pet Ga. Alloys were prepared from elements of 99.99 pet purity or better, induction-melted in alumina crucibles under hydrogen. After reweighing, the alloy ingots were cast into wires under argon. From the weight losses and the reproducibility of the lattice parameters, compositions were estimated to be within ± 0.3 at. pet. The techniques of quenching from the liquid state were reported before.3-5 Prior to quenching, a small section of cast alloy wire (30 - 50 mg) was melted in an alumina insert under an argon flow. The quenched specimens were in the form of flakes, typically 1 sq mm in area. For solid-state quenching, alloy filings passing 200 mesh were sealed under a reduced helium atmosphere in a thin-bottom silica tube. After heating for -30 min at the desired temperature in a vertical furnace, the sealed tube was rapidly dropped into ice water so that the thin bottom of the tube broke on impact. The quenched alloy filings were always ferromagnetic and could be collected by a magnet. X-ray diffraction patterns were taken with iron-filtered cobalt radiation in a 114.6-mm-diam Debye-Scherrer camera. High-angle lines were always resolved and spacings were computed relative to ? (CoKa1) = 1.78890Å. Lattice parameters were obtained from extrapolation against the Nelson-Riley function. The variation of lattice parameter with composition is shown in Fig. 1, together with the data of Dasarathy and Hume-Rothery.1 Uncertainties in the present measurements are within the dimensions of the symbols or indicated by error bars. X-ray diffraction lines indicative of CsC1-type ordering could be clearly identified for alloys of 34 - 50 at. pet Ga quenched from the liquid and alloys of 35 - 41 at. pet Ga quenched from -975°C. Y.-I do not care to discuss Mr. Taggart's paper in the light of theory, as that has been very well done by Prof. Bell,1 but I should like to criticize some of his conclusions, in the light of actual operating practice at plants all over the country. 1. Mr. Taggart's first conclusion is that in crushing average ore, the character of the gangue has little effect on the efficiency of the mill. This, I believe, is not in accordance with the usual practice, since in crushing a hard ore the capacity will be much reduced below what it would be with a softer ore, while the power consumed will be practically independent of the character of the ore, being proportional only, to the load of ore and balls in the mill. 2. Mr. Taggart's second criticism is that the Hardinge mill is not suitable for grinding soft, tough material. In answer to this I might mention that the mill is being used for grinding tough, dnctile material, such as metallic aluminum, and also for grinding licorice root. 3. He says that the ball-mill works more efficiently on material of intermediate size, say 1/2 to 3/4 in., than on either coarser or finer feed.. This is true as to coarser feed. For the most efficient work, I believe that a ball-mill should be fed with material not coarser than 1 1/2 in.; it' will handle material up to 3 and even 4 in., but the reduction from 3 or 4 in. to 1 1/2 in. can be done much more cheaply and efficiently by rolls or disk crushers than in the ball-mill. 4. As to Mr. Taggart's fourth conclusion, that a greater ratio of reduction can be expected with feed of an intermediate size than with a coarse feed, I have not enough information to express an opinion. 5. His next conclusion is that steel balls are much more efficient crushing media than pebbles. Steel balls are undoubtedly more efficient for crushing coarse feed. On fine material they are also more efficient as to tons per horsepower crushed to 10-mesh, but on fine material I think it will be found that flint pebbles are cheaper than cast-iron balls, per ton of ore, although there will be a saving in power per ton by using cast iron instead of flint. The increased cost of crushing with cast iron will be due to the higher cost of iron at the present time. 6. Mr. Taggart's sixth conclusion coincides with present practice, that steel balls will grind as fine or finer than pebbles when working on the same feed.

Various methods have been proposed in the literature to calculate the pressure losses in drill-pipe and bit-nozzles, i.e., those parts of the mud-circuit where the largest pressure-losses occur. Very few data, however, are available to check the validity of these proposals. Presented in this paper are the results of pumping experiments with clay-water drilling fluids of different specific gravities and different laminar flow-properties (differential viscosity and Bingham yield value), using pipes of different diameters. In addition, a series of measurements on bit-nozzles is discussed. Two main conclusions may be drawn from this work for the flow through pipes. 1. In the laminar flow region pressure losses can be calculated from the differential viscosity and Bingham yield value of the mud. 2. In the turbulent flow region pressure losses can be calculated with good approximation from a viscosity term which is determined by the volume fraction of the dispersed phase. Calculations making use of laminar flow properties may lead to erroneous results. The effect of temperature on the pressure losses in the case of turbulent flow can be calculated from the change in viscosity of the dispersing medium, i.e., water. The main conclusions determined for the flow through bit-nozzles are that for flow conditions prevailing in the field, the pressure-drops in bit-nozzles are independent of the laminar flow properties of the mud. They are solely determined by the density of the mud and the geometry of the nozzle. INTRODUCTION The last decades have witnessed a steady increase in the depth of oil wells. This is illustrated by the increase in the drilling depth record in the USA from 8,046 ft in 1927 to 21,482 ft in 1953. This increasing depth, together with the experience that high rates of mud circulation and high fluid velocities in the bit-nozzles enhance the rate of drilling, has emphasized the importance of selecting suitable mud-pumps when starting the drilling of a deep borehole. For such a selection it is necessary to be able to calculate the pumping pressures necessary to obtain the required circulation rates. The main part of the pressure-losses in the mud circuit occur in the drill pipe and the bit-nozzles. Various methods have been proposed in the literature to calculate the pressure-losses in the drill pipe1,2,3,4. These methods do not all lead to the same results, and at the time this investigation was started insufficient basic data were available to check their validity. Moreover, to our knowledge, no data are available at all on the effect, if any, of the flow-properties of the mud on the pressure-losses in bit-nozzles.

IN spite of the great amount of operating experience and of studies directed toward elucidation of the interrelation of the several processes going on in the blast furnace, the present picture of its operation is based largely on indirect evidence and on speculation. The reason for this unsatisfactory situation is the extreme difficulty of making direct observations and significant measurements while the furnace is operating, and of translating laboratory experience to the conditions obtaining in the smelting process. Yet there are questions that can be investigated with some promise of a definitive answer; and it is the purpose of the present paper to set forth some of these questions, as a basis for discussion, which may, it is hoped, lead to active work on some of them. In order to provide a starting point for this discussion, some views held tentatively by the writer are outlined, along with a certain amount of evidence gathered from operating records and interpreted on the basis of the ideas expressed. These opinions may prove not to be pertinent, and may well not be in accord with the opinions of others; they have been included to encourage others to do likewise and on purpose to provoke informal discussion. In this way it should be possible to transcend the limitations of formal papers; to bring forth suggestions of new hypotheses or new methods of investigation; and to promote better understanding between investigators and operators in this difficult field. The statements made express the present views of one physical chemist who is not too familiar with all the difficulties of maintaining these enormous reaction vessels in reasonably smooth and economical operation; who, however, is persuaded that some of these difficulties would be less formidable if surer knowledge of the several interrelated and concurrent processes were available and made use of. For these difficulties arise largely, it is believed, from variation in conditions which the operator must meet as best be can, and should lessen as these conditions can be brought under control so that they are either made substantially constant or the variations are neutralized by compensating methods. A. VARIATION IN BURDEN AND IN MIXING OF CHARGE To the scientific investigator, who aims to control the conditions of experiment and to limit the number of variable factors, the most perplexing aspect of the blast-furnace process is that nothing seems to remain constant for long. Variations of burden seem to be unnecessarily frequent; and, even if the charge were constant from hour to hour, its constituents usually are not mixed as intimately as they might well be. THIS paper reviews the industrial trends and changes in educational concepts that have led to the development of the modern petroleum engineering curriculum. A trend toward emphasis on engineering fundamentals is noted. While most universities are committed to the traditional four-year engineering program, it is agreed that more than four years is necessary for academic preparation of the petroleum engineer in all phases of his profession. The author proposes a coordinated program of undergraduate and graduate training that will permit of adherence to the general pattern of the present four-year engineering course, with provision for extension of the program into specialized graduate courses of professional character. In the latter, emphasis may vary with the interests and objectives of the individual student. A specific undergraduate curriculum is proposed in which upward of 80 per cent of the available time is devoted to engineering fundamentals. A broad survey of the professional field is afforded in courses grouped in the third and fourth undergraduate years, but detailed treatment of the professional aspects of petroleum engineering is reserved for the graduate program. INTRODUCTION Of necessity, engineering curricula must ever be changing to reflect the new techniques, the changing concepts that are presented as the engineering industries develop and unfold. Particularly is this true of the younger engineering curricula representing comparatively new and rapidly changing industries such as the petroleum industry. Institutions that planned their petroleum engineering curricula a decade or two ago now find that the petroleum industry has become vastly more technical in its requirements. Entirely new methods and techniques have come into vogue and must be given place in the curriculum, and some of these are of a character that demands changing emphasis in the fundamental preparatory subjects. College and university faculties cannot complacently assume that curricula in this field that were considered appropriate 10 or 20 years ago still reflect the needs of the industry that they are designed to serve. If they do, their graduates will be poorly equipped to meet the requirements imposed upon them by a rapidly changing industry. Perhaps it is not too much to expect academic authorities to anticipate the trends of industry and equip their graduates with what they will need to attain leadership 10 or 20 years after graduation. Whether or not this desirable objective is possible, there is no excuse for allowing curricula to fall behind the current needs of industry. DURATION OF CURRICULUM The majority of our engineering schools and colleges still adhere to the four-year curricula and there appears to be a definite - sentiment among many engineers engaged in industry that work should be so planned that the engineering student may secure the essential academic preparation for his profession in a terminal four-year program. THIS is the second in a trilogy of investigations carried out in order to understand the solid state transformations and their accompanying effects on the deformation behavior of near-equiatomic Ni-Ti alloys. The first stage of this effort has dealt with the strictly martensitic structures obtainable in these alloys, i.e., those in which diffusion processes were not involved.1,2 These martensites could be produced either by rapid quenching or by plastic deformation of the originally B2 type phase. The present investigation, on the other hand, will deal with those transformations in Ni-Ti which do involve diffusion. A majority of investigators3-10 have shown that the B2 modification of TiNi, which is stable at elevated temperatures, decomposes into one or both of the intermetallic compounds NiTi2 and Ni3Ti below about 650°C. On the other hand, this has been disputed by several Workers was undertaken in order to resolve this discrepancy, as well as to shed more light on the nonmar-tensitic decomposition of B2 NiTi. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Sample preparation, fabrication, and examination were the same as those described previously in Ref. 2. In addition to the 50 at. pct Ni (55.06 wt pct) hypoeu-tectoid alloy used previously, a second hypereutectoid alloy containing 54.4 at. pct Ni (60 wt pct) was also prepared for this study. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The equilibrium diagram for the Ni-Ti alloy system in the vicinity of Ni-Ti is shown in Fig. 1. The solid lines have been established by the work of Poole and ~ume-Ftothery4 whereas the dotted lines are based on findings obtained in the present investigation as described below. Structure and Morphology. Fig. 2(a) shows a bright field transmission electron micrograph of a two-phase structure obtained in a polycrystalline Ni-Ti alloy that was furnace cooled (approx 200°C per hr) from 1050' to about 300°C. Large plate-shaped precipitates can be observed in a matrix which was found by electron diffraction to possess the high temperature B2 structure. A selected area diffraction pattern of the region covered by Fig. 2(a) is shown in Fig. 2(b), while Fig. 2(c) is a detailed schematic interpretation of Fig. 2(b). The B2 matrix reflections are illustrated by squares while those of the precipitate are shown as circles. The d values associated with the precipitate reflections could be determined quite accurately since the reflections from the B2 matrix, for which the lattice constant is known precisely, were simultaneously present in the diffraction patterns. THE present program of increased production of armament and lend-lease material for mechanized war has created a problem for the shops that must do the machining. They have naturally turned to the steel producers to provide them with a steel that can be accurately machined with the greatest possible speed. The adding of sulphur to steel as an aid to machinability has long been practiced; however, it may cause red shortness in rolling and may result in billets with seams and cracks, which must be removed before rolling can be continued. This conditioning of billets slows down production and' adds to the cost of making steel. Experience with various grades of sulphur steel made to different specifications has shown that Bessemer sulphur steels roll better than similar grades made in the open hearth, and also that low-carbon steels that are open or semikilled .as tapped roll better than completely deoxidized or killed steels. This has led to the belief that oxygen plays an important part in the rolling qualities of sulphur-bearing steels. It is generally held that the red shortness of sulphur steels is due to the low melting point of the sulphide compounds that separate out at the grain boundaries when the steel solidifies. At the rolling temperature of steel these sulphide compounds melt and cause cracking. ADDING SULPHUR AS A SULPHITE These difficulties can be avoided if sulphur is introduced into the steel by means of an anhydrous sulphite, such as sodium sulphite or sodium bisulphite, which-upon decomposition-forms sulphur dioxide. It is assumed that, in this case, the oxygen of the sulphur dioxide forms part of the sulphide inclusions in the steel, and raises their solidification temperature enough so that the formation in the steel of a low-melting eutectic is prevented. The result is the prevention of hot shortness and a more uniform distribution of inclusions. Fig. I shows photomicrographs of steels made with sulphur, while Fig. 2 illustrates the structure of steels made with sodium . bisulphite. These samples were cut from the steels as cast-that is, before rollingand were polished and lightly etched to bring out the grain boundaries. Fig. I shows that sulphide -inclusions segregate more or less at the grain boundaries, and it can be seen how the continuity of these low-melting inclusions would cause red shortness. Fig. z shows that the sulphide inclusions are more or less uniformly distributed throughout the matrix. This arrangement of inclusions has no apparent effect on the rolling qualities of a steel. This statement has been substantiated by the observation of the rolling of over 6000 tons of steel made with a sulphite addition. GEOLOGICAL problems are approached from a geometrical (space relations) viewpoint, a kinematical (time sequence) viewpoint, or a dynamical viewpoint. The first two require sound training in conventional geology and in field methods. The third approach requires a solid foundation of chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Modern training for geologists should include close integration of basic sciences with geological principles. INTRODUCTION Our knowledge of the earth has increased tremendously during the last half century. We know more about its surface configuration, the distribution of its natural resources, the procession of living forms that inhabited it in the past, the chemical composition of its oceans, the areal distribution of its surface rocks, the movements of its atmosphere, and so on. Not only do we know more facts about the earth, but we have a better understanding of the processes that take place on and within it, such as the nature of earthquakes, the thermodynamics of the atmosphere, the chemical equilibria involved in the formation of igneous rocks, the mechanics of stream flow, the dynamics of the earth's origin, and so on. Many sciences contributed to the sum total of this knowledge, including such established disciplines as geology, geography, physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology. Out of this accumulation of new knowledge grew also a group of new sciences, such as seismology, oceanography, meteorology, volcanology, hydrology. Collectively these latter are known as the geophysical and geochemical sciences, and to a large extent they began as branches of geology. Until the turn of the century, for example, the study of earthquakes (seismology) was a part of geology, although as early as 1846 Mallet, a physicist, had suggested that the subject could be investigated by elastic-wave theory. Comparatively little progress was made along these lines until the seismograph was developed near the turn of the century; since then, additional earthquake data have accumulated rapidly, but more important, the interpretation of these data essentially has kept pace with their accumulation. In similar fashion, meteorology, was generally considered a branch of geology as recently as one or two decades ago. Considerable progress had been made in such aspects as weather forecasting, but the science dates its recent rapid rise from the year 1911, when Bjerknes first applied the principles of dynamics to the analysis of air masses. The rapid development of such disciplines as oceanography, volcanology and hydrology was due in part to the application of principles of chemical equilibrium, of dynamics, and of thermodynamics to earth problems, by men who were essentially physicists or chemists by training. The last half century, therefore, and particularly the last two decades, saw the influx of numerous chemists and physicists into the realm of the earth sciences.
