The present program of increased production of armament and lend-lease material for mechanized war has created a problem for the shops that must do the machining. They have naturally turned to the steel producers to provide them with a steel that can be accurately machined with the greatest possible speed. The adding of sulphur to steel as an aid to machinability has long been practiced; however, it may cause red shortness in rolling and may result in billets with seams and cracks, which must be removed before rolling can be continued. This conditioning of billets slows down production and adds to the cost of making steel. Experience with various grades of sulphur steel made to different specifications has shown that Bessemer sulphur steels roll better than similar grades made in the open hearth, and also that low-carbon steels that are open or semikilled as tapped roll better than completely deoxidized or killed steels. This has led to the belief that oxygen plays an important part in the rolling qualities of sulphur-bearing steels. It is generally held that the red shortness of sulphur steels is due to the low melting point of the sulphide compounds that separate out at the grain boundaries when the steel solidifies. At the rolling temperature of steel these sulphide compounds melt and cause cracking. Adding Sulphur as a Sulphite These difficulties can be avoided if sulphur is introduced into the stecl by means of an anhydrous sulphite, such as sodium sulphite or sodium bisulphite, which—upon decomposition—forms sulphur dioxide. It is assumed that, in this case, the oxygen of the sulphur dioxide forms part of the sulphide inclusions in the steel, and raises their solidification temperature enough so that the formation in the steel of a low-melting eutectic is prevented. The result is the prevention of hot shortness and a more uniform distribution of inclusions. Fig. I shows photomicrographs of steels made with sulphur, while Fig. 2 illustrates the structure of steels made with sodium bisulphite. These samples were cut from the steels as cast—that is, before rolling— and were polished and lightly etched to bring out the grain boundaries. Fig. I shows that sulphide inclusions segregate more or less at the grain boundaries, and it can be seen how the continuity of these low-melting inclusions would cause red shortness. Fig. 2 shows that the sulphide inclusions arc more or less uniformly distributed throughout the matrix. This arrangement of inclusions has no apparent effect on the rolling qualities of a steel. This statement has been substantiated by the observation of the rolling of over 6000 tons of steel made with a sulphite addition. TEe method of R. W. Moore' for determining subsurface interfacial depths by means of integrated curves of apparent resistivity has been analyzed theoretically. It is found that the only unique tangents that can be drawn to such curves are the asymptotes at infinite electrode spacing and the tangents through the origin at vanishing electrode spacing. Explicit expressions have been derived for the relationship between the electrode spacing at the points of intersection of these tangents and the thickness of the surface strata as a function of the conductivity parameters for the two-layer and three-layer earths. It is found that in all cases the electrode spacing at the points of intersection will exceed % of the thickness of the surface layer, and may even become indefinitely large as the resistivity of the deepest layers increases as compared with that of the surface layer. These results do not agree with the empirical findings of Moore that the intersection of the tangent lines fall at an electrode spacing very approxirnately equal to the thickness of the surface layer. Introduction In a recent paper, R. W. Moore1 proposed a new method for the analysis and interpretation of earth-resistivity measurements. This consists essentially in plotting against the electrode separation of a Gish-Rooney system the integral of the apparent resistivity with respect to the electrode spacing, and observing the breaks in the integral curves. Specifically, tangents are drawn to the various segments of the integral curves, which show appreciably different slopes, and the intersections of these tangents are used as indications of the depths of the various underlying strata. By numerous examples Moore has shown that the electrode separation at the first intersection so found agrees very closely with the depth of the bottom of the surface layer. Moreover, in a number of instances the intersections for greater electrode spacings seemed to correspond to the depths of deeper beds. From a strictly empirical point of view, the procedure proposed and demonstrated by Moore appears to be particularly interesting because of its simplicity as well as its apparent accuracy, Moreover, such a simple method would be especially valuable in view of the well-known difliculties heretofore encountered in the quantitative interpretation of resistivity data. It therefore seems appropriate to attempt a mathematical analysis of the problem to see whether the integral method of Moore has a sound basis. Such an analysis is presented here. Even on cursory consideration, it is clear that the remarkable successes observed by Moore in the application of his method are indeed surprising. For it depends upon the determination and choice of the slopes of smooth and continuous curves, which by their nature must show even more gradual- variations than the original apparent-resistivity plots that are already so difficult to interpret quantitatively. This symposium is designed to lay the basis for a general discussion of the place of geophysics in the training of geologists. As there is danger that in the ensuing debate individual interests may be given emphasis out of proportion to their place, we shall do well to view the whole field of geological inquiry in order to see the problem in true perspective. The Nature of Geological Inquiry "Basic" and "Complex" Sciences It is convenient to divide all science into two major divisions, the basic and the complex sciences. The basic sciences separate out from reality such entities as "substances" and "movements," describe their behavior in terms of arbitrary units of measurement and derive from them by progressive abstractions concepts and patterns of behavior that exist between them, so-called general "laws" and "properties" of nature. The complex sciences, on the other hand, deal, with little or no abstraction, with those objects of reality that are accessible to man in the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, the lithosphere and the biosphere. Their work comprises two types of inquiry. One is concerned with abstractions to the extent of dealing with types rather than individuals—that is, with such things as plants, animals, protoplasm; clouds, streams, gla- ciers; volcanoes and mountain ranges. It comprises the search for general properties and patterns of behavior or "laws" that characterize the objects and their reactions to each other. These properties and laws apply always, everywhere. They are independent of the stream of time. We may call the results of this sort of inquiry timeless knowledge. The other type of inquiry is concerned with the objects themselves—that is, with this animal and that plant; this river system and that mountain chain; this glacier and that valley. Like all concrete objects in nature, they are subject to change with the passage of time, especially when it is measured in years, centuries, eons. The characteristics by which we recognize them —indeed, their very existence—are dependent on their position at this point in the stream of time. This we may call time-bound kntowledge. The so-called descriptive sciences are all bound to the past of which the objects of their study are the product and through which alone their present properties call be understood. They are historical sciences. This obvious fact is easily overlooked, which leads to serious misunderstanding, as we shall see later. Dynamic Geology With this broad picture in mind, let us now examine the nature of geological inquiry, defining, for the purposes of this discussion, geology as the science of rocks. The place of geophysics in the curriculum of a college or an engineering school has been much discussed. There is uncertainty as to whether the graduate may be called a "geological geophysicist" or a "geophysical geologist." Some have used the term "geophysical engineer." The question of the specialized undergraduate curriculum versus a general undergraduate training in the parent sciences with the addition of cultural electives has been and is still being argued. The literature during the past Io years shows that there are two rather definite schools of thought on this subject. The prospective employer, engaged in active geophysical exploration, visualizes the graduate in terms of the routine work he will do in the field. The school administrator, grounded in many years of tradition in the cultural type of education, visualizes the graduate in terms of his position in a political and cultural society as well as in his work as a professional geophysicist. Both are right and both wrong. A third school of thought, that of the student himself, has been almost totally ignored. It would seem best, for the purpose of this paper, to treat these various points and allied material separately, and then to integrate the conclusions as a set of conditions that should be fulfilled as far as possible in the ideal curriculum. At the end the relationship of our findings to the curriculum that has been tentatively adopted at the University of Pittsburgh will be considered. Divisions in Definition or Field of Geophysics Geophysics is that field of science in which geological and earth problems are solved with the use of physical and chemical techniques. Altogether too much attention has been paid to the artificial separation in this science of the commercial applications from the so-called "pure" or academic geophysics. The only real difference in the two types of work is one of scale of operations. In the commercial field the scale is large in terms of fmancial backing, immediate economic importance, and speed of operations. In the academic field the scale is large in terms of breadth of interests, in eventual economic importance, and length of time allowable for theoretical investigations. In exploration work the scale is small in terms of dimensions, since the methods are applicable only to the outer 20,000 ft. or SO of the earth's crust. In academic work, the student is not pressed for results of immediate economic importance, and therefore can afford to spend more time on problems that seem unimportant at the time. In the sense of background knowledge of the parent sciences necessary to the geophysicist, no essential difference can be found. Physics, chemistry, geology, and mathematics together, and in their proper proportionate amounts, form the matrix from which geophysical ideas and methods may spring.

As this paper is written, the only method for the commercial production of lithium metal is by the fusion electrolysis of LiCl-KCl mixtures, as first proposed by Guntz.2 The details of the industrial process have not been made public but Osborg8 stated that an efficiency of more than go pct is obtained with a lithium metal recovery above 95 pct and that the metal is 99.5 pct pure. Pletenev9 gave a power consumption of 66 kw-hr per kilogram of lithium metal produced with a salt consumption of 9 kg of LiCl and 0.4 kg of KCI. Pletenev's figures indicate a somewhat lower recovery than that given by Osborg. In a recent report on German lithium plants, Motock7 gives figures that are also less favorable than those reported by Osborg. At the German plants the lithium recovery in electrolysis was only 83.4 pct, with a power consumption of too kw-hr per kilogram of lithium. The metal averaged only 97 pct pure, with sodium and potassium as the chief impurities. The presence of SO2, SO3, Si02, Ba, Ca, and appreciable amounts of Na and Fe2O3 were especially disturbing in the electrolysis, and it was necessary to run the cell for some time to eliminate most of these impurities and condition the bath. It may be noted here that most of these impurities do not interfere with a thermal reduction process. These facts show that the present method of producing lithium is fairly efficient and would suggest that other methods could not compete. However, fusion electrolysis has certain drawbacks, such as the necessity of supplying costly, low-voltage direct current and of collecting and processing the anodic chlorine if it is not to be wasted. An even greater disadvantage is that lithium chloride must be used for an electrolyte. It is one of the most expensive salts of lithium, since it cannot be produced in anhydrous form by precipitation from aqueous solution, as is done with LiF or Li2CO3. The reduction of lithium by a vacuum process similar to the ferrosilicon method for the production of magnesium would have certain advantages. Small units, such as Pidgeon retorts, would give flexibility of production to meet demand, and a small plant would require moderate capital outlay. There is a possibility of using idle Government-owned magnesium plants for such purposes. The raw materials needed for vacuum thermal reduction would not have to be extremely pure, especially with respect to the iron and calcium content. The mining district of Sao Fidelis, in the northern part of the State of Rio de Janeiro, is situated on the Paraiba River, where it crosses the Serra do Mar (Mountain of the Sea), in the center of a mountainous country having numerous graphitic outcrops. For a long time, these outcrops were irregularly explored by local people, who had little means and no technical advice. A few years ago, the Cia. Brasileira de Minerasgo de Grafite took over the control of some of the more important outcrops and entrusted to me the task of studying the ores and establishing a flowsheet for a pilot plant to be situated in São Fidelis—the ore to be concentrated being mostly of a very high grade. Mineralization and Ores The rocks of the district are mostly gneiss and crystalline schists, with occasional interstratification of dolomitic limestone belonging to the Archean Brazilian Fundamental Complex. The general direction of the beds is roughly between 60" and 80°E., with variable dip, generally nearly vertical. Mostly, direction and dip of the graphitic outcrops is concordant with the embanking gneisses or schists. These outcrops seem to be aligned in two or three parallel zones (Pádua, São Fidelis, Mac- abu), the Sao Fidelis zone being the best known and the most important to date. Two outcrops of the São Fidelis zone, Saudade and Sao Benedito, are now being exploited. Mining has been carried out, so far, on a small scale. The mineralization consists of a vein of nearly massive graphite in a very compact, partially granitized gneiss, with vertical dip. The vein is most irregular, with nests and lenses irregularly distributed along the fracture plane. The ore consists chiefly (particularly in Sao Benedito) of massive graphite appearing and disappearing along the main direction of the vein, forming a succession of irregular lenses in a sort of rosary design. The average width is more or less one foot, with variations from zero to 6 feet. The lode minerals are quartz, a little feldspar and garnet (the latter having its origin perhaps in the embedding gneisses), with rare ferruginous clays on the outcrops. In Saudade a little pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite is found occasionally, as well as a carbonaceous mineral, very light, black and shiny, with conchoidal fracture, looking like a sort of jet. The composition of this mineral has not yet been established, but it seems to be very complex. The mineralization seems to be hydro-thermal at a rather low temperature, perhaps mesothermal. The paragenesis, according to samples from Saudade, seems to be as follows, the earlier minerals being listed first: pyrrhotite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, with quartz concomitant to the three and graphite formed later. The question is often pondered whether the flotation process is still an art or has become a science. The fact is that flotation is a science in so many variables that only art can blend them. It is demonstrable that no less than one hundred variables are involved in any flotation operation, most of them immeasurable on a routine basis. The behavior of every one of them is always governed by orderly and unchanging law, as no man can doubt. There is nothing truly indefinite about that behavior; the only indefiniteness is in our knowledge of it, either in general or from hour to hour in the circuit. In dealing with a simultaneous equation in, say, one hundred variables, all not only affecting the outcome to some degree but many influencing each other as well, it is small wonder that the mineral-dressing profession presents a case history of debate and controversial opinion. The statement of the subject of this symposium—a symposium on flotation machines—seems to delimit and define the matters to be considered and at least the general nature of the conclusions sought. Nevertheless, in such a meeting it is not possible to meditate upon all the variables that do in one way or another affect performance of flotation machines. To attempt it would be much like trying to operate a hundred-ring circus. Perverse variables being what they are, one could expect the elephant in ring 36 to squirt a trunkful of water at the tightrope performer in ring 37 to ruin that artist's act, just as our learning to depress pyrite in the early 1920's ruined the act of the formerly faithful old Callows. Honest Disagreements Selective flotation dates from 1922 or 1923, when several plants established their regular flotation operations on a selective basis. Since then, two decades of efforr have gone into the development of better and better flotation machines. Many have come and gone. The competition has simmered down to perhaps a dozen machines, each one of which is staunchly defended by some operators as being the best for their particular jobs, and as scornfully dismissed by at least a few others elsewhere as being positively the poorest for theirs. These disagreements are honest disagreements, honestly arrived at after plenty of sweat. In many a flotation plant, one machine has been tried out against another under conditions as fair as they could possibly be made. Sometimes the results are on a par but more often one machine shows a consistent and unmistakable margin of superiority over the other. In equally honest and enlightened tests, machine A may win over machine B in one place, and machine B over machine A by as great a margin in another. This paper purposes to identify some of the more prominent reasons why this is so,

TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS Gentlemen -The Institute was founded 54 years ago "with the object of promoting the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals and the welfare of those employed in these industries by means of meetings for social intercourse and the reading and discussion of professional papers, and to circulate by means of publications among its members and associates the information thus obtained" At least once a year it is well to take stock of our assets, review our performance and determine how well we are now carrying out the purposes of our Founders There can be no question as to the work the Institute has done and is doing in promoting the arts and sciences in the fields of mining and metallurgy One needs only to contiast the methods, the labor and the costs of a half century ago with those now to visualize how far we have gone in the development of accurate technology and sound economics in mineral and metal production The great mines, mills and smelters of the present, handling individually thousands of tons per day, would have been impossible except for the accumulation of knowledge, the development of theory, and the improvement in practice that has charac¬terized the period since the foundation of the Institute The United States has prospered in the last half century greatly, and this has been due not merely to the possession of great natural resources, but to these resources being reduced to possession and put to work The absence of customs barriers and the freedom of trade across the whole width of this great continent has been an important factor in the growth of our wealth Unrestricted interchange of goods has permitted each citizen to draw on the resources of the whole country However, these are but subsidiary causes of prosperity The free interchange of scientific and technical data, by making the whole body of facts and theory available to each worker, has made this quick and unrivaled development possible In promoting this free trade in knowledge the Institute may claim a large place without fear of denial The 72 volumes of TRANSACTIONS, the special volumes, the bulletins and the other pub¬lications that have been issued, include a store of knowledge of the arts and sciences related to the pioduction and use of metals and minerals not duplicated elsewhere The large list of foreign members-1746 in number-few of whom ever have opportunity to attend meetings and all of whom derive their main benefits from membership through the pub-

SILICON bronzes containing iron are used to a considerable extent in industry, under the trade name of P.M.G. alloys. Various classes of wrought alloys fall in the composition range 1.5 to 3.5 per cent silicon, and 0.5 to 2.5 per cent iron. Castings may contain as much as 6 per cent silicon and 3 per cent iron at present. The constitutional diagrams of these alloys are thus of considerable practical importance. Copper-silicon-binary alloys have been thoroughly investigated by a number of workers, the latest reports being those of C. S. Smith' and of A. G. H. Andersen .2 Although much work has been done on iron-copper alloys,3 recorded investigations on the copper-rich copper-iron binary constitutional diagram are not numerous. Tammann and Oelsen4 determined the solubility limits of iron in copper by means of magnetic measurements, and found that the solubility of iron in copper amounts to a fraction of one per cent at 400°C., increasing slowly to one per cent at 800°C. From 800°C., the solubility increases rapidly and attains 4 per cent at 1100°C. Hanson and Ford," using electrical resistivity measurements and the microscope, determined a somewhat different solubility limit. Of earlier X-ray works on the copper-iron system, very little has been published. The work by Bradley and Goldschmidt6 on copper-iron-aluminum alloys includes some information on the copper-iron binary. These investigators conclude that substitution of iron in the copper lattice decreases the spacings, which is contrary to the evidence of the present work. Hanson and West7 have investigated the ternary alloys of copper with iron and silicon. Although their diagrams are valuable contributions to the understanding of these alloys, they did not recognize the kappa phase,1,2,7,8 and their diagrams do not everywhere conform to the phase rule. The present work contains a check by means of X-rays of the solid solubility limit of iron in copper, and an X-ray investigation of the ternary-phase diagram, which, owing to present conditions, it became necessary to curtail considerably. PREPARATION OF SAMPLES Castings weighing about 75 grams were melted under vacuum. The charges were made up of ingot iron, copper cathodes from Laurel Hill, and refined silicon supplied by the Electrometallurgical Co. Alundum crucibles were generally used. The exceptions were alloys 77 and 78, which were melted in graphite crucibles. The ingots were annealed at 800°C. for one week, then samples were cut for chemical analysis. INTRODUCTION OVERGRINDING, or the breaking of ore particles into sizes smaller than required for liberation, is a first-magnitude problem in grinding for concentration processes. The conventional ball mill-classifier circuit used in commercial grinding produces mineral particles that are all ground to pass an upper size limit, while the proportion of very fine sizes, or slimes, is uncontrolled. Calculations based on measurements made in commercial plants which were grinding ore for flotation concentration indicate that about 90 pct of the energy used in grinding is consumed in useless overgrinding.1 In addition to accounting for the consumption of a large amount of energy, overgrinding is detrimental to the flotation process. Overground slime coats larger particles and inhibits selective action by the flotation reagents on particles which by themselves could be separated very well. A further difficulty is that extremely finely ground minerals do not respond satisfactorily to flotation-collecting reagents, and both selection and recovery decrease markedly with particles finer than 5 to 10 microns.2 Conventional classifier-ball mill circuits inherently tend to overgrind the valuable minerals more than the gangue minerals because most valuable minerals are of higher density and are softer and more friable than the gangue minerals. The remedy to this situation would seem to be a separating mechanism which would separate free valuable mineral particles regardless of size and density considerations and a mechanism which would operate in the grinding mill so that valuable mineral grains would be removed from the grinding machine as soon as they are freed. A consideration of these ideas led the authors to the conception of a simultaneous grinding and flotation mechanism. So far as the authors are aware, such a machine has never been tried, even on a laboratory scale. DEVELOPMENT OF APPARATUS AND EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Apparatus development went through several stages before a really workable machine was devised. Work was started with a large cast-iron mortar 7 ½ in. in diameter and 8 in. deep. A cast-iron disk was mounted on the end of a vertical shaft so that it fitted loosely into the bottom of the mortar. On top of the disk four radial cleats ¼ in. high were bolted to agitate the ball charge as the disk, or impeller, rotated. The vertical shaft was driven at 100 rpm by a mechanism improvised from an old coffeemill type of grinder. A hole was drilled into the bottom of the mortar through which compressed air was introduced for frothing. In operation, weighed charges of ore which had been crushed to pass an 8-mesh screen were placed in the bowl along with water and suitable reagents. ANYONE who wishes to make the patterns for statues in order to cast them later in bronze, even though he himself is the artificer who made them, must take many things into consideration: first, whether they are large or small, and whether they are wholly round or only in part; then of what material they are made, for the way that can be followed if they are of wax cannot be used if they are of clay, wood, marble, or even of plaster; likewise he must consider whether or not it has irons inside to support it. There is also a great difference in facility if the support is placed more in. one way than in another. Great consideration should be given to whether it is to be made hollow or solid. If you have not been the workman yourself, you must at least have been an active helper in this and in every other part in order to be able to observe everything without a fault. For if they are large it is necessary to make their moulds in pieces, with marks and measurements so that you can replace them-at will exactly in the same order and in the same places after they have been taken out. But if you are the artificer [as well as sculptor] the process is made easier. Taking the ordinary way and, over an iron, make out of well beaten moulding clay, compounded with cloth clippings a core exactly as the statue is to be or however large you wish the hollow to be. Dry and bake it. On top of this work the wax, thickening it all over as much as you wish the bronze to be and finish it completely, remembering to arrange that the base may come out solid with bronze so as to support the whole work. Then take some rods of hammered bronze one dito thick and one palmo long. Pass these throughs the thickness of the wax and fasten them in several places in the core of clay that you made. [81] Do it so that they, project out of the wax a good three or four dita. These are, put in so that when the wax is removed the core is held in the middle of the mould that forms the outer part, and this outer part is held by the inner part, namely the core, so that the mould may not move in any part from its place even when it is handled. IT is only in recent years that substantial progress has been made in developing a physico-chemical picture of the solid state. The molecular concept, so useful in dealing with gases, was naturally carried over to the field of crystalline solids; it has resulted in the firm implanting of erroneous concepts that only now are being eradicated successfully. Two simply written and effective books on the subject are Crystal Chemistry by Stillwell1 and An Introduction to Crystal Chemistry by Evans.' A more complete treatment of the subject is available in a book by Wells.' The monograph by Hückel4 also touches on a subject most easily perceived by reference to the brief introduction by Bragg,5 that master of the field. These texts make it clear that while some solids are built of molecules, many are built of ions, others of atoms connected in the form of giant molecules, and still others of cations and electrons. The various lattices in which these entities are systematically arranged, the joint use of several of these entities, and the transitional character of some of the bonds make for the great variety of crystalline solids. The purpose of this paper is to point out a most important corollary of present views on the structure of solids. In this connection the classification of solids in Table I is helpful. Atomic crystals are those formed by the noble gases, e.g., helium and argon. They are soft, sublime at very low temperature, of very low specific gravities, and not encountered in ores. Molecular crystals are uncommon among inorganic materials, common among organic materials. Typical examples from both inorganic and organic fields are sulphur, iodine, naphthalene, benzene, and carbon tetrachloride. These crystals are soft and have low specific gravities; where the molecules are small, the sublimation temperature is low. Filament and sheet crystals are rare. They are typified by elemental selenium and elemental arsenic, respectively. Graphite and molybdenite come near being sheet crystals. These crystals are soft in some directions, tough in others, sublime at various temperatures. Diamantine crystals, typified by diamond, are very few in number, stable at high temperatures, and extremely hard. Ionic crystals are common. Most salts, acids, and alkalies belong in the two classes of ionic crystals; examples are rock salt, fluorite, calcite, and angle-site. The salts, acids, and alkalies that do not belong in these classes are more properly regarded as transitional between ionic crystals, framework crystals, and diamantine crystals, e.g., ice and quartz. Fiber crystals are relatively uncommon mineral-ogically speaking, but common in the fields of living processes. Examples are asbestos, silk, cellulose, and wool. Many fiber crystals are so little known even now that their crystallinity may be doubted. Layer crystals, among the more interesting and useful of solids, include a wide variety of substances

Many thousands of years ago when our earliest ancestor first swung out of a tree, picked up a rock, and threw it at what he hoped might be his lunch, the minerals industry, in a manner of speaking, was born. It was then a very long step indeed to the primitive metal industry of our early civilizations, for we know that precious metals were accumulated and some metal objects were produced several thousand years ago. Prospecting, or "exploration" to use the modern euphemism, consisted of little more than outcrop examination and the use of a gold pan, and it probably did not change much from our earliest civilizations until relatively recent times. In a general sense, all the early explorers of North America were also prospectors, for mineral wealth was certainly one of the goals of the first pioneers and settlers. The earliest pioneers didn't do too badly either, for they discovered copper and iron in various places in the Appalachians and Michigan, gold in the Southeast Piedmont and many mineralized areas in the Southwest. In most places these were outcropping ores or gossans, and the prospecting was incidental to the arduous task of ekeing out a living in a new land. It was the explosive discovery of rich placer gold deposits at Sutter's Mill in California that caught the public fancy and precipitated the establishment of prospecting as a full-time occupation. After the end of the Civil War in 1865, full-time prospecting became an important occupation and continued as such for almost three generations. Prospectors equipped with picks, shovels, gold pans and four-footed transportation swarmed all over what are now our Western States, discovering thousands upon thousands of mineral showings-and certainly most of today's large mining districts. Our vigorous western mining industry is a tribute to the courage and persistence of these men. The techniques of these picturesque prospectors, however, were essentially the same as those of their predecessors-examination of every outcrop and assiduous use of the gold pan. The great increase in discovery at this time was therefore due to increased activity rather than to different techniques. An important result of this in- creased prospecting was the growth of interest in geology. It was during this period that the U.S. Geological Survey began to grow. Many of the major mining districts were mapped, and geological studies and projections began to have an impact on further ore discovery. Ore search and development gradually became more geologically oriented and the geologist became a fixture in most mining camps by the 20th century. The development of mass-mining techniques in the early part of the century also changed exploration concepts.

THE place of geophysics in the curriculum of a college or an engineering school has been much discussed. There is uncertainty as to whether the graduate may be called a "geological geophysicist" or a "geophysical geologist." Some have used the term "geophysical engineer." The question of the specialized undergraduate curriculum versus a general undergraduate training in the parent sciences with the addition of cultural electives has been and is still being argued. The literature during the past 10 years shows that there are two rather definite schools of thought on this subject. The prospective employer, engaged in active geophysical exploration, visualizes the graduate in terms of the routine work he will do in the field. The school administrator, grounded in many years of tradition in the cultural type of education, visualizes the graduate in terms of his position in a political and cultural society as well as in his work as a professional geophysicist. Both are right and both wrong. A third school of thought, that of the student himself, has been almost totally ignored. It would seem best, for the purpose of this paper, to treat these various points and allied material separately, and then to integrate the conclusions as a set of conditions that should be fulfilled as far as possible in the ideal curriculum. At the end the relationship of our findings to the curriculum that has been tentatively adopted at the University of Pittsburgh will be considered. DIVISIONS IN DEFINITION OF FIELD OF GEOPHYSICS Geophysics is that field of science in which geological and earth problems are solved with the use of physical and chemical techniques. Altogether too much attention has been paid to the artificial separation in this science of the commercial applications from the so-called "pure" or academic geophysics. The only real difference in the two types of work is one of scale of operations. In the commercial field the scale is large in terms of financial backing, immediate economic importance, and speed of operations. In the academic field the scale is large in terms of breadth of interests, in eventual economic importance, and length of time allowable for theoretical investigations. In exploration work the scale is small in terms of dimensions, since the methods are applicable only to the outer 20,000 ft. or so of the earth's. crust. In academic work, the student is not pressed for results of immediate economic importance, and therefore can afford to spend more time on problems that seem unimportant at the time. In the sense of background knowledge of the parent sciences necessary to the geophysicist, no essential difference can be found. Physics, chemistry, geology, and mathematics together, and in their proper proportionate amounts, form the matrix from which geophysical ideas and methods may spring.

Maximum furnace efficiency and close control of final steel composition demand that the steel melter be able to follow closely the variations in the carbon content of the bath. For many years, the fracture test has been used by melters for estimating carbon, because it requires only a very short time to pour a sample into a chill mold, cool it in water, break it with a sledge hammer, and observe the fracture. After long experience gained from the observation of such fractures, most melters are able to estimate the carbon content of steel with amazing accuracy, particularly in the lower carbon ranges. Notwithstanding the utility of the fracture test, there has been widespread interest in other methods for rapid carbon determination to supplement it and to ensure against possible errors in human judgment. Several methods, based upon measurement of magnetic properties as functions of carbon content, have been described in the literature1-6 and have been found to give reasonably reliable results in plant practice when scrap composition is known and controlled. A difficulty encountered in the use of analyzers of the magnetic type is that alloying elements do change the relationship between carbon content and magnetic properties and it becomes necessary to establish calibration curves for all the expected combinations of alloy residuals that are not oxidized in the bath. The work reported here is of an investigation of a method that is independent of alloying elements normally present in constructional steels, being based upon the relatively well-known fact that in plain carbon and low-alloy steels martensitic hardness is a function of carbon content alone. Work oF Other Investigators In I938, Burns, Moore and Archer published & curve? that showed that the hardness of martensite is a function of carbon from 0.10 to 0.50 per cent and is independent of grain size or alloy content, at least within the rallge found in construc-tional S.A.E. compositions. Some of the deeper hardening types investigated, however, contained carbon to a maximum of only o.2o per cent. Using this principle, Kern8 developed a method of rapid carbon determination for S.A.E 43xx steels, His procedure consisted of chill-casting a test bar that was large enough to give a a that could be prepared for Brinell indentations. The test piece was quenched immediately after solidi fication was complete and hardness readings were taken, so that the carbon content could he read from an experimentally determined curve giving the relationship between as-quenched hardness and carbon. INTRODUCTION The equilibrium constants for methane and for water, and for ethane and water have been calculated from experimental data for the two binary systems.2,3,11,12 These constants are for the two-phase systems for the temperature range of 100" to 340°F and the pressure range of 200 to 10,000 psia. The constants for ethane are greater than those for methane. Equilibrium constants for a natural gas from a natural gas-water system6 are about the same as those for methane. Equilibrium constants for water in all three systems are very nearly the same over the greater part of the range of temperatures and pressures studied. In ideal solutions, the vapor-liquid equilibrium constants for a component should be the same in all such solutions at a given temperature and pressure.5 Few solutions are ideal, and consequently the use of generalized constants often leads to error in situations where they do not actually apply. In decidedly non-ideal systems, it is desirable to have equilibrium constant data for the specific system. Vaporization equilibrium constants may be calculated either by thermodynamic methods or from experimental vapor-liquid equilibrium data. In the thermodynamic calculation. the equilibrium constant K may be shown to be" K = fP,/fl'..........(1) where fPi is the fugacity of the pure component i at the given temperature and at the vapor pressure of the pure component, and fp is the fugacity of pure i in the gaseous state at the temperature and total pressure of the system. At best the thermodynamic calculation results in a K applicable to ideal solutions. Equilibrium constants calculated from Equation (1) have been found to have only limited agreement with experimental values, even though the solutions for which they were calculated approached ideality."'" If the more volatile component is at a temperature above its critical, the accuracy of the equilibrium constant for the component is made more doubtful by the use of the vapor pressure term under such conditions. In order to make the thermodynamic calculation on a component above its critical temperature, one must resort to one of the empirical methods of extrapolation of the vapor pressure to conditions above its critical point.13 Application of the thermodynamic equilibrium constant then to the methane-water or the ethane-water systems would be risky since the systems are non-ideal, and the methane and ethane are above their critical in most petroleum operations. The expression "unit process " comes up with increasing frequency in discussions among metallurgists and mineral engineers, especially among those concerned with training the next generation. The unit process approach characterizes a significant advance along the road from metallurgy as an empirical art to metallurgy as a branch of engineering. The purposes of this paper are to define and list the unit processes in specific terms, to indicate the scientific and engineering principles basic to all the unit processes, and finally to show how these ideas have been applied to a reorganization of instruction in chemical metallurgy. Unit Operations and Unit Processes Metals are extracted from ores and other raw materials by stepwise procedures. In general, each metallic element is extracted by a different procedure. For many of the metals there is a choice of several flowsheets. However, the procedures all have steps in common. In fact, the many different flowsheets are all made up of a relatively small number of steps which are combined in different groups and sequences. For example, crushing, screening, roasting, sintering, melting, and gaseous reduction are steps which each appear in the Bowsheets for extracting the majority of the metals. The individual steps or flowsheet units can be designated as unit operations or unit processes. These terms are well established in the field of chemical engineering, as the American Institute of Chemical Engineers' definition of chemical engineering shows: " Chemical engineering is that branch of engineering concerned with the development and application of manufacturing processes in which chemical or certain physical changes of materials are involved. These processes may usually be resolved into a coordinated series of unit physical operations and unit chemical processes. The work of the chemical engineer is concerned primarily with the design, construction, and operation of equipment and plants in which these unit operations and processes are applied. Chemistry, physics, and mathematics are the underlying sciences of chemical engineering, and economics its guide in practice."'1a In this definition, the distinction between unit operations and unit processes is that the unit operations are physical while the unit processes are chemical. Table I gives a list of the principal unit operations and unit processes of chemical engineering, taken from Shreve.1b Table 2 lists the principal unit operations and unit processes used for metal extraction. The division between unit operations and unit processes is similar to the chemical engineers' distinction and also correspollds approximately to the division of labor bctween mineral dressing and chemical metallurgy which has been customary in the past. Furthermore, it will be noted that in the proposed classification the unit processes primarily involve chemical reactions and/or changes in state of aggregation; the unit operations primarily do not involve either bulk

Since the equation of continuity governing transient flow of gases through porous media cannot be integrated mathematically into a simple usable expression free from series terms, empirical and approximate equations have been advanced relating cumulative production and future production rates from gas reservoirs with time. In order to check the accuracy of these empirical equations and to obtain an insight into the initial conditions pertinent to the solution of the fundamental equation of continuity, experimental work has been conducted on a vertical 2-in. tube, 91.6 ft. high, packed with unconsolidated Wilcox sand. The results presented in graphical form show the accuracy of the approximate relations. Data from unsteady-flow runs on the 2-in. experimental tube are presented graphically, and are applied to obtain an equation for this specific case, and are offered as an aid in future investigations of this basic equation. The close agreement between equations calculated for steady-state flow and the experiments indicates that the decline of actual gas reservoirs may be treated by an application of these equations without serious error. Introduction The steady-state flow of gas through a porous material—that is, flow wherein the boundary conditions do not vary with time—is subject to analytical solution. Muskat1 has shown that the general differential equation is simply the La Place equation in P2. Direct solutions may be at once obtained. The unsteady state, on the other hand, is not analytically reducible. Since nearly all phenomena of practical interest in gas production involve flow in the unsteady rather than in the steady state, it has been necessary to derive approximate Solutions to the general equation. The validity of such approximations has not hitherto been adequately tested. In the experiments to be described a simple, closed, linear system is substituted for the real complex gas field. The general results, however, are independent of the geometry Of the system' The problem studied is the rate of production, and the accompanying variations in pressure, when one end of a linear porous system is opened to the atmosphere and permitted to produce to exhaustion. An approximate solution to the general differential equation, based upon the assumption of an "infinite series of steady states," is then applied to the results to determine the validity of this method of dealing with actual reservoirs. Theoretical Considerations The fundamental differential equation governing the flow of a gas through a Porous medium can be derived easily from the equation of continuity, Darcy's law, Boyle's law and a statement of the thermo-dynamic nature of the flow.
