PROJECT 8411 of the U. S. Bureau of Standards, sponsored by the Iron and Steel Division of the A.I.M.E., is an attempt to define more concisely than has been possible heretofore the accuracy and the Limits ' of usefulness of the ' various methods now in use for the determination of oxygen as it exists in ferrous materials. It originated in correspondence between John Johnston and other metallurgists, and was brought to the attention of the Iron and Steel Division of the Institute at the Annual Meeting in February, 1933. As reported in MINING AND MET,ALLURGY, Vol. 14, page 152, March, 1933, "Dr. Johnston introduced, and those present adopted, a resolution that the Iron and Steel Division of the A.I.M.E., believing that a careful comparison of the several methods now in use for the analysis of steel for nonmetallic elements such as oxygen is highly desirable, heartily endorses the proposal that the U. S. Bureau of Standards act as a clearing house " in this matter, undertaking the final preparation and allocation of identical samples to those laboratories willing to collaborate in this important question, and collate the results re- ported back to the Bureau.'"

it is well known1 that racemic mixtures of optical isomers can be separated by passing their solutions through a column packed with r- or 1-quartz powder so that one of the isomers becomes adsorbed selectively on the asymmetric quartz surfaces. Although the natural occurrence of r- and 1-quartz is more or less equally distributed, some localities show enough deviations toward a higher proportion of l-quartz2 to suggest that optical isomerism might influence quartz flotation. Beta-amines have an asymmetric carbon atom, and therefore optical activity may be expected. Beta-amines are reported to behave quite differently from alpha-amines in the flotation upgrading of certain oxidized iron ores.3 It is of interest, for both practical and theoretical reasons, to determine whether or not optical isomerism plays a role in the amine flotation of quartz. In this article the results of Hallimond tube flotation tests and of adsorption measurements using d-beta-phenylisopropylamine on both r- and 1-quartz are compared. D-beta-phenylisopropylamine was chosen for the tests because it is commercially available in optical isomers. MATERIALS AND METHODS Brazilian quartz crystals were hand-sorted according to the difference in trigonal trapezohedral faces, and each crystal was further checked by the Airy's spiral.4 The respective crystals were then crushed, and the -150 + 200-mesh fractions were screened out for the Hallimond tube tests. The samples were cleaned by brief leaching with warm, dilute hydrochloric acid, and then by repeated rinsing with distilled water. In preparation for the adsorption measurements, they were then dry-ground in a pebble mill for several hours, washed a few times with distilled water, and finally dried in a vacuum desiccator. By means of the Krypton gas adsorption method, the specific surfaces of r- and 1-quartz samples were determined to be 27,700 and 19,800 sq cm per gm respectively, the difference being due mainly to the decantation procedure rather than to the inherent difference in their grindability. D-beta-phenylisopropylamine was the only collector used in the study. It was solubilized by neutralizing with 110% of the stoichiometric requirement of 0.1 N hydrochloric acid. The specific rotation of the d-beta-phenylisopropylamine was determined with a polari-meter using sodium D line to be, Although the d-beta-phenylis~prop~lamine showed absorption maxima in the wave length region of 250 to 270 millimicrons, due presumably to the phenyl group, these peaks were too sensitive to be used for colorimetric determination of the residual concentration in the adsorption measurements. The amine-picrate method, used in the colorimetric analysis of dodecylammonium chloride,' was found to work satisfactorily for the d-beta-phenylisopropylamine. The adsorption densities were thus determined after equilibrating 40 gm of the ground quartz sample with 300 ml of solution by tumbling in separate glass-stoppered Erlenmeyer flasks for one hour. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 presents the adsorption densities of d-beta-phenylisopropylamine on the r- and 1-quarts in the pH range of 6 to 7.5. In agreement with data reported in the literature, the adsorption density of d-beta-phenylisopropylamine was slightly higher on the r-quartz than on the 1-quartz, although the difference was not as pronounced as one might expect from the capacity of r-quartz and 1-quartz to separate racemic

A theoretical and experimental laboratory study has shown that the rate of breaking of oversized particles in a ball mill is proportional to 1) the concentration of such particles, and 2) the area of the balls, provided that the balls are larger than a certain size relative to the particles. If all undersized material were removed as formed, the rate of breaking would be almost independent of the quantity in the mill. Rate equations are given which are similar to those for zero, first, and second order reactions. Deviations of small balls from the equation for a second order phenomena are quantified by a factor called "nipping efficiency." Some data are correlated by a dimension-less equation, which is used to estimate nipping efficiencies from data not in the correlation. The investigation described here was undertaken after a literature survey revealed that little was known concerning the mechanism of breaking of particles within a ball mill and the effect of this mechanism upon grinding rates. One paper, by Roberts1 , offered a theory concerning the mechanism of breaking, and a rate equation for the breaking of particles larger than some size to particles smaller than that size. That paper provided the starting point for a theoretical and experimental investigation of grinding under carefully controlled conditions. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS In his paper on the probability theory of ball mill grinding, Roberts theorized that "... a given expenditure of power leads either to a certain number of point to point blows per bp-hr or to a certain distance of line contact per hp-hr ..." He assumed that the balls touch each other during each blow or during moving contact. Then he said that a volume of pulp, dependent upon the size being considered, would be covered per minute within which all oversized particles would be crushed to particles smaller than that size. Naturally, the higher the concentration of oversized particles in the pulp, the higher the rate of which they would be broken. From this reasoning Roberts obtained the differential equation -dC/dt = k hp/ton C (1) where k is a constant for any size of particle, density of particle, and moisture content of pulp. C is the percentage of oversize in the material to be ground, t is the time, and hp/ton is the power input per ton of material in the mill. He then integrated the equation to log Co/Ct = k/2.3 hp/ton t , where Co and Ct are the percentage of oversize at time zero and t respectively. By always using the same quantity of material in a mill and assuming that it required constant power to run the mill, he was able to combine the horsepower per ton factor with the other constants to give an equation for a first order rate.

We have studied the simple case of repeated stress, without considering impact, which might bring in other factors. This investigation has shown that steel under repeated applications of stress, reversed from positive to negative, will not fail below some fairly clearly defined limiting stress that, so far we can see, does not bear any definite relation to the ordinary elastic limit, being as large as the elastic limit in some cases and about one-half the elastic limit in others. According to one theory, fatigue is the result of changes in crystalline structure by repeated stress. I do not know of any evidence in favor of this theory. The crystals are broken under repeated stress. According to Bauschinger, under repeated stress some inherent property of the material changes its elastic limit; possibly some property of the amorphous cement between the crystals. A third theory is that all fatigue of metals is the result of the spread of damage from little localized overstresses. While I do not feel justified in accepting the last theory rather than the second, I have yet to run across a case of failure of steel or other metal, either in the laboratory or in service, that could not be explained by the gradual spread of damage from some nucleus. We have found, for example, that it is possible to subject a homogeneous steel, like Armco iron or a 0.90 per cent. carbon steel, that has been thoroughly annealed, to one hundred million reversals of stress as high as the elastic limit of the steel with no sign of failure. On the other hand, a complex structured steel, like a chrome-nickel steel that has been hardened with very little drawing, will fail at a stress about 58 per cent. of its elastic limit. Between these two we get a variety of results. In the steel work of any building, there are undoubtedly many thousands of places where structural damage was done—where riveted members were bent into place cold and where the rivets were fitted with drift pins, etc. Locally the steel in the building was stressed beyond its yield point in many places. These little localized overstresses do no damage at all; the building is entirely safe. But if this building were subjected eight or ten times a day to a mild earthquake, these little localized overstresses might be nuclei from which damage would spread

ACCURATE ore-sizing with screens is drawing attention to certain details that now, more than ever before, require attention. There are many tests that must be preceded by careful sizing. The assayer often could profit by a more careful selection of screens. In milling, more attention is given the slimes produced. Cement-manufacturers are pulverizing and screening finer than they formerly did, and others are reducing materials to fine sizes at high cost, with screens used to govern the fine¬ness of the pulverized product. Fine screens are expensive, easily injured by mis-use, are carried in stock sparingly by most dealers, and are handled often by those who know little about them except their designated number. More attention, on the whole, needs be given the actual size of the mesh-openings, and less emphasis placed upon any custom or conventionality in numbering. An effort to classify wire screens, in this respect, leads at once into computations, where one is confronted with details of sizes and standards, of different wires, different gauges, and different customs. There is always uncertainty about the exact working-size of a screen until one gives the matter special attention, and devotes more time to it than its simplicity seems to demand. To know only the number is not sufficient for all uses. Often, in sets, superfluous sizes are used; and sizes are omitted that are of critical importance. In wire screens, the use of different standard sizes of wire makes important differences in dimensions that must be taken into account. The dealer usually grades screens by the number of openings per linear dimensions, regardless of the size of the openings or of the wire. Certain 100-mesh screens in use are found, by measurement, to he actually coarser than others of 90-mesh, a result which is due, of course, to the use of larger

A potentiometric model study has been made of the effect of vertical fractures existing in the matrix of the reservoir on the flooding or cycling performance. Fractures can have unusual flow characteristics. Fluid entering one side of a fracture can emerge on either the same or opposite side of the fracture, depending on the particular streamline. Fracture orientation has a great influence on the sweep efficiency. However, sustained fluid injection may still permit large areas to be swept. INTRODUCTION One can find considerable information available in the literature on the effect of fractures originating at the wellbore on sweep efficiencies of water-flooding or gas cycling programs.1-5 However, there arc few, if any, quantitative data reported in the literature on the effect of vertical or horizontal fractures existing out in the reservoir matrix on secondary recovery performance. Several papers have been presented on the effect of vertical and horizontal fractures on the productivity or conductivity of waterflood and gas injection patterns, but in all cases the fractures initiated at the well and simulated commercial fractures.6,7 It is believed that natural fractures may exist out in the reservoir matrix and would effect the displacement performance. The purpose of this report was to study the effect of a few isolated vertical fractures existing out in the reservoir matrix on the performance of waterflood or gas injection patterns. DESCRIPTION AND EQUIPMENT Since the potentiometric model was described by Lee8 it has been widely used to study numerous types of fluid displacement problems. The potentio- metric model can be used for fluid displacement studies when the following assumptions are valid: (a) steady-state conditions exist; (b) the mobilicy ratio is one; and (c) the capillary and gravitational effects can be neglected. Five-spot and direct line drive square patterns were studied using a copper strip of the desired length and orientation to simulate a vertical fracture in the reservoir matrix. The 20 x 20-in. model was considered to represent only one element of an infinite array of similar patterns. DISCUSSION AND RESULTS FIVE-SPOT PATTERN — ONE FRACTURE BETWEEN INJECTION AND PRODUCING WELLS Fig. 1 shows a quadrant of a five-spot pattem with the vertical fracture existing out in the matrix along a line connecting the injection and producing wells. Length of the fracture was equal to 35.4 per cent of the distance between injection and producing wells. In this particular pattern it is noted that fluid breaks through from the injection well to the producing well when the dimensionless time is equivalent to 26.9. INTRODUCTION IN a series of papers, the authors and their associates have shown that the resistance of a metal to fracture is a function of all three principal stresses. 10-18,20,21,23,[1] Consequently since a technical cohesion limit is defined as the technically determinable resistance to fracture, under a specific stress system, the technical cohesive strength comprises an infinite number of technical cohesion limits corresponding to the infinite number of possible combinations of the principal stresses. As shown in the previous papers, the technical cohesive strength increases with plastic deformation, with decrease in temperature, and with increase in the strain rate. The technical cohesion limit, therefore, is affected by the same factors that affect the flow stress,§ namely, the stress system, plastic deformation, temperature, and the strain rate. The effect of each of these factors on the fracture stress is qualitatively the same as its effect on the flow stress. The effect of any of the factors may be represented by a curve of cohesion limits, although only one point on the curve may represent actual fracture. Since the term "fracture stress" has come into general use with the same significance as technical cohesion limit; the authors are here using the' shorter term with the understanding that it, does not always refer to actual fracture. In the general investigation described. in the previously-mentioned papers,10-18,20,21,23 the influence of the stress 'system on the fracture stress was studied by means, of tension tests of notched specimens. When a circumferentially notched cylindrical' specimen is subjected to longitudinal ten-, sion, the minimum cross section is under " transverse radial tension. The mean radial stress increases with the depth and sharpness of the notch, but is always less than the longitudinal stress. The greatest principal stress (S,), therefore, is longitudinal, and since the radial stress is effectively equal to the circumferential stress, the transverse principal stresses are equiaxial in that plane (S2 = S3). By the use of notched specimens in tension tests it was shown that the fracture stress increases with increase in the radial stress ratio (S3/SI). The evidence is based not only on the results of tests to fracture at various constant temperatures, but also on. results of two-stage tests, in which each specimen was plastically deformed a predetermined

AN appraisal of the activities of the mining geologists during 1936 clearly indicates the ever in- creasing utilization of geology in the search for ore. Few men with geo- logic training are idle at present; this is particularly true regarding recent graduates. Many have accepted employment in distant fields, such as the Philippines and South America, and greatly increased mineral production from these places reflects their activities. In North America, regions of intense mineralization formerly important are being restudied in greater de- tail and with better understanding; as a result, new mineral wealth is being found in many such districts. Much is being done by private companies and individuals, and it is to be hoped that mining companies will increasingly make available the purely scientific results of such studies by permitting their geologists to publish. On such generosity to a large extent will future advances in ore finding depend.

THE Iron and Steel Division, A.I.M.E., is unique in this country in that it serves all phases of the iron and steel industries. Through its publications, its meetings, and its sponsorship of new technical developments in the industries, it has proved of great value. The various technical committees of the Division are the nucleus around which this service can be developed. The Blast Furnace and Raw Materials Committee has done excellent work. The need for beneficiation of iron ores is increasing and the economics of this operation are developing more and more in favor of increased activities. Ores that are slightly undergrade should be concentrated up to grade to supplant the present practice of mixing with higher-grade ores to bring up the average composition. Marginal ores that are not now being mined, or that are being mined and piled for future use, should be concentrated. The development of the use of sinter in the blast furnace, because of the elimination of fines, the advantage of better sizing of the charge, the resulting reduction of coke consumption, and increased output of pig iron per furnace, will make concentration and sintering become practical ahead of its natural time.

One of the least known geologic regions in the U.S. is the area now called the Basin and Range Province. It is paradoxical that so little geologic information has been compiled for a province that has yielded billions of dollars worth of metals and is currently producing a small amount of oil. Regional stratigraphic studies of parts of this large territory have been published only recently, and regional structural interpretations of even parts of the province are rare in the literature. This, of course, does great injustice to the earliest workers: Gilbert,1,2 Russell,9 Le Conte,4 Spurr,5 Louderback,8 and others, who recognized the area as distinctively different from the rest of North America. Their simplified picture of the structure of the ranges and the province as a whole is the groundwork for present understanding and has never been superseded. Since their early works, however, geologic data from the province has consisted largely of detailed reports of widely scattered mining districts. Each district has been described as though it were an island in an unknown sea. More recent syntheses of the geologic history have been prepared by Lindgren,7 Ransome,8 Nolan,9 Bill-ingsley and Locke,30 Longwell,11 and Eardley.12 The tentative nature of the present interpretation, which treats the structural evolution of the Utah and Nevada area, must be considered in light of the scarcity of geologic information from the province as a whole. The methods of interpreting tectonic history from stratigraphy are based largely on the concepts of Marshal Kay.23 Discussions with Hoover Mackin also have aided in organizing the Tertiary history. TECTONIC AND STRATIGRAPHIC SETTING Two approaches to the subject of the tectonic history are possible; they correspond to looking through opposite ends of a pair of binoculars. One involves an expansion and extension of detailed work and the other an interpretation based on regional geological relationships. It is believed that the second approach, used here, is not in disagreement with detailed observations. The area of the Basin and Range Province is shown in Fig. 1. Within this area middle Tertiary to Recent high-angle faulting has controlled development of mountain ranges and valleys. Only the part of the area north of Las Vegas, Nev., and south of the Snake River in Idaho will be considered in this article. Within this part of the province most of the ranges trend north-south. Approximately two thirds of the area is covered by late Tertiary to Recent valley fill and lake deposits.

Three rocks of highly varied physical properties are selected for the first reported experimental study concerning microseismic activity of rock under tension to determine the effects of static fatigue, loading rate, repeated loading and rock anistropy compared to compression and bending loads. The microseismic method of detecting rock under deformation may be a great potential tool in surveillance and location in situ of dangerously stressed strata, as well as predicting rock failures. Noises emitted under load or the rate of energy (energy of noise pulses generated per unit time) are computed for varying conditions. The tests are conducted at constant load on a dead weight loading machine to eliminate all possible extraneous noises — an indispensable precaution — at various load levels. Experimental results are reported including the relation of total energy emitted to tensile strength of rock and the possibility of simulating a phenomenological model for microseismic activity. Plots of some of the experiments are included. INTRODUCTION Rock failure, whether on a large scale faulting in the earth's crust and rock bursts in mines, or on small scale ruptures of laboratory test specimens, generates transient vibrations in the rock mass. Mechanisms of intermittent deformation, such as twinning and cracking through and between mineral grains, also produce similar vibrations, but of very small amplitude. Such vibrations from both deformation and failure are referred to as microseismic activity, rock noise, or occasionally seismo-acoustical activity. An individual rock noise is sometimes

The radial shrinkage during sintering of cylindrical compacts and loose aggregates of copper powder was measured. It was found to be nonuni-form from top to bottom of the samples and to depend upon the method of supporting them. The non-uniformity is due to the effect of gravity forces during sintering. Since gravity has an effect in sintering without externally applied stresses, no sharp dividing line can be drawn between conventional sintering and hot pressing. RECENT investigations of the sintering behavior of compacts1 and of loose powder aggregates2 have indicated that forces, other than those arising from surface tension effects, may play a role in shrinkage. In compacts it was shown that residual stresses from the pressing operation influence shrinkage behavior. In loose powder aggregates gravity forces due to the weight of the powder affect the ratio of shrinkage in the vertical and the horizontal direction. The main effort in the work reported here was to show that gravity plays a role also in the sintering of compacts. A few additional experiments were made confirming the effect of gravity in the sintering of loose powder aggregates. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Compacts and loose powder aggregates were prepared from irregularly shaped, electrolytic copper powder. Prior to use the powders were reduced 30 min at 400°C in dry hydrogen to remove surface oxides. Then the -325 mesh size fraction was separated from the -100 + 325 mesh fraction. The compacts were pressed at a pressure of 10,000 psi from 50 g of powder in a hardened steel die, 1 in. in diam. The height of the compacts was 0.725 i 0.005 in. An effort was made to get as uniform a green density distribution in the compacts as possible. The walls of the die were lubricated with a suspension of 3 pct of zinc stearate in acetone and the compacts were pressed using double action by first pressing the powder at 1200 psi with the die barrel supported, then removing the sup- ports and pressing to final pressure of 10,000 psi with the die barrel floating. The pressure was maintained for 10 sec. The compacts were sintered at a temperature of 925°C, generally for 1 hr. In order to maintain uniform temperature they were sintered in boats made from cylindrical copper blocks. The blocks were 2 in. in diam, either 2 or 2 1/2 in. long and, split to form the body of the boat and a lid. The body of the boat contained a cavity 1 3/8 in. wide, 1 in. deep and either 2 1/8 or 1 3/8 in. long. The longer cavity accomodated two samples, the shorter one only one sample. The uniformity of temperature distribution within the boats was checked with thermocouples welded to the top and bottom of the samples. The maximum variation between top and bottom temperatures was i 1/2°C. The actual sintering temperature was held constant within ±2°C. In order to determine the effect of gravity forces, i.e., the weight of the compacts, upon shrinkage, they were supported in the following ways during sintering: a) Full Bottom Support. The compacts rested either on a flat alundum disk or on alundum powders. b) Partial Bottom Support. The compacts rested on a graphite cylinder, 0.3 in. in diam which formed a projection on a larger graphite disk. It is difficult to balance the compact on the small projection. To avoid having the compact tip, a small hole was drilled through the compact and through the graphite disk and its projection. The graphite disk was then suspended from the lid of the boat by a thin iron wire which passed through the holes in the disk and the compact. c) Top Support, first type. A hole 3/32 in. in diam was drilled diametrically through the green compact 3/16 in. from the top of the compact. The compact was sintered suspended from an alundum rod (thermocouple protection sleeve) inserted into the hole. d) Top Support, second type. A hole was drilled axially through the center of the compact. The upper part of the hole from the top surface of the compact one fourth of the way down was 1/16 in. in diam; the lower part of the hole from the bottom surface three fourth of the way up was 3/32 in. in diam. The compact was suspended from the lid of the boat by an iron wire passing through the upper part of the hole and then tied into a knot. The loose powder aggregates were made by filling l in. deep, l in. diam cylindrical graphite molds with -325 mesh powder. The deformation mechanisms operating in Ti-5Al-2.5Sn at 20°K under uniaxial and biaxial stress fields were determined by using both optical and electron microscopy. In the uniaxially stressed specimens, de-fu~rnation twins were found only in the immediate vicinity of the fracture. Twinning was, however, established as a deformation mechanism under biaxial stress conditions. The same slip systems were opera-tiz,e under both uniaxial and biaxial stress. Prismatic slip was identified as the major slip syslem; however, basal and first-order pyramidal slip also occurred, but to a lesser degree. The interaction of moving dis-locations on intersecting slip planes resulted in the formation of jogs and dipoles. Hexagonal dislocation networks were formed only under biaxial stress conditions. A discussion is given on the formation of hexagonal dislocation networks. IT has been shown that titanium alloys can exhibit unusually high strengths when tested in a biaxial stress field.'-" The high biaxial strengths are a consequence of a strong basal plane sheet texture which results in distinctly anisotropic flow properties. This texture strengthening appears to decrease with decreasing temperature2 and would seem to indicate a change in deformation modes. For example, in a uniaxial tensile test, Ti-5A1-2.5Sn yields isotropically at 20°K but is strongly anisotropic at room temperature. The increase in biaxial ultimate over uniaxial strength at 20°K is also much less than at room temperature. It is known that titanium car] form deformation twins more readily at cryogenic temperatures than at room temperature.4 Since the formation of deformation twins will reduce the degree of basal texture in sheet material,' an accompanying decrease in texture strengthening would be expected. To investigate more fully the nature of texture strengthening at cryogenic temperatures, the deformation modes of Ti-5A1-2.5Sn tested in uniaxial and 1:1 biaxial tension at 20°K were studied by optical and electron transmission microscopy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The uniaxial and biaxial stress test specimens were prepared from 0.020-in. thick sheets of Ti-5A1-2.5Sn ELI having the composition shown in Table I. Uniaxial stress conditions were obtained by using flat tensile specimens machined from the sheet material. The longitudinal axis of the tensile specimens was aligned perpendicular to the rolling direction of the sheet. Tile biaxial test specimens were prepared by rolling precut, 19-in.-lengths of sheet into 4-in.-diam cyl- inders. Following longitudinal butt welding, the cylinders were stress relieved at 1000°F for 4 hr. A 9-in. sq "window" was then chemically milled into each cylinder's surface reducing the wall thickness in the milled area to approximately 0.006 in. The testing procedure consisted of pressurizing the cylinders while simultaneously applying a tensile load. Using this technique, a 1:l axial to hoop stress was obtained. Complete details of the specimen and testing procedures are given in Refs. 1 and 2. The biaxial and uniaxial stress specimens were all tested in liquid hydrogen. Specimens for electron transmission microscopy were prepared by first chemically milling to a thickness of about 0.001 in. followed by electrolytic polishing to electron transmission thickness. When a hole is made in a stressed solid, such as rock pierced by mine openings, equilibrium of the solid is destroyed. To restablish that equilibrium the stress condition in the rock surrounding the opening becomes rearranged. This rearrangement may or may not develop local stresses in the vicinity of the opening which exceed the elastic strength of the rock. Since stability of the opening depends, therefore, on the strength of the naturally occurring rock surrounding the opening, this rock is an engineering material of construction, and all rock affected by the associated opening or system of openings may be considered a structure. The term invert is chosen to describe the formation of the structure built from the inside, as it were, and a consequence of mining rather than an entity built for a purpose. By definition, an invert structure is formed when openings are made underground and is com- posed of that material on the solid side of a rock-air interface wherein the stress condition is affected by the associated opening or system of openings. The shape of an invert structure is never clearly defined; the skin of the structure may be mapped, and even described, but the boundary of the structure within the solid rock mass must be arbitrarily set.

IN reviewing the field of mineral industry education last year reference was made to recent assertions, mostly emanating from sources not in a position to know the facts, that mining engineers as a class are disappearing. Attention might also then have been called to a statement that appeared in Engineering News, August 11, 1892 (p. 130), ". . . the great absolute decline in number of mining graduates, which last amounts almost to a complete abandonment of mining engineering as a distinct branch of study." As predicted, during 1937 South Louisiana witnessed one of the most active drilling campaigns in the history of the area, resulting in the discovery .of 14 new fields. The economic importance of 10,000-ft. production was far-reaching and the objective depths placed on some wildcats was 12,000 feet. Most of the important discoveries and deep tests were in the delta area between the Atchafalaya and Mississippi Rivers, where the upper Miocene sands were found productive between 10,000 and 11,000 ft. The casing program on these wells usually called for a protection string of 95/8-in. casing at approximately 9500 ft. Drilling barges with the heaviest equipment were used where water transportation was available. The oil production for South Louisiana during 1937 was 62,147,690 bbl., as compared with 51,968,727 bbl. during 1936, an increase of 19.5 per cent. There were 281 oil and gas wells and 172 dry holes completed during 1937 as compared with 262 oil and gas wells and 135 dry holes during the previous period. New Fields Gibson.—The first discovery for the year was in the Gibson area, where Shell Petroleum Corporation's Realty Operators No. 1, sec. 18, 17 S., 15 E., Terrebonne Parish, was completed flowing 780 bbl. of 38° A.P.I. oil daily through a 14/64-in. choke with a tubing pressure of 1700 lb. Production is from upper Miocene sand found from 9461 to 9483 feet. Abbevil1e.—The discovery well for the Abbeville field was Continental Oil Company's Hebert No. 1, sec. 20, 12 S., 3 E., Vermilion Parish, completed flowing 50 bbl. of distillate and 2 million cubic feet of gas through a 3/16-in. choke with a tubing pressure of 2550 lb. The well was plugged back from 12,216 ft. in the Chickisawhay, and is producing through perforations from upper Miocene sand found from 7668 to 7682 ft. Later in the year, the same operators completed Brookshire No. 1, sec. 66, 12 S., 3 E., flowing 366 bbl. of 42° A.P.I. oil per day through a 3/16-in. choke with a tubing pressure of 1800 lb. FLOTATION practice in Idaho is now about 13 years old. The advance has been steady during these 13 years. The operators have been alert to take advantage of the newest developments and they have themselves made a constant effort to improve their work. The metallurgical improvements are due to the development of (1) better equipment, (2) better reagents, and (3) better understanding and control of the process. During the eight years the writer has been in this district, there has been continuous experimentation by several companies to improve the ore dressing by flotation methods. Gravity concentration has fought hard to hold its place, and although it is true that gravity processes have been improved during this period, nevertheless, in several of the important mills of the district the few tables that managed to hang on have finally given way. On the straight-lead ores, tables and jigs are still used; and, due to better classification, their hold on this job has been strengthened. ORES OF THE DISTRICT The ores of the district are of two general classes: (1) clean lead ores, such as those from the Bunker Hill and Hecla mines, and (2) complex lead-zinc ores. The general impression prevails that the clean lead ores, class 1, are simple and that it is easy to obtain high recoveries and good grade products. This, in a way, is a false impression; there is quite a high percentage of locked middling in these ores at 100 and 150-mesh sizes. Improved classification preparatory to table treatment of this type of ore has made it possible to segregate effectively a high-grade middling which is further comminuted and floated. The complex lead-zinc ores of the district, of which the ore from the Morning mine of the Federal Mining & Smelting Co. is a typical example, always have presented a difficult problem. It always has been comparatively easy to make a clean lead concentrate, but it never has been possible to concentrate sphalerite with a-specific gravity of 4.10 from siderite of gravity 3.88. Also, a large percentage of the galena and sphalerite of this class of ore refuses to separate out until the crushing has been carried

DURING the last ten years, in the effort to save manpower and costs, methods of drilling and blasting in Sweden have changed and developed in a revolutionary manner. These developments have been accompanied by extensive alterations in methods of tunneling and in mining technique. Since the end of the 1940's there has been a 100 pct change-over in Sweden to the use of tungsten carbide tipped drill steel. Both investigations and practical results have shown clearly that a tungsten carbide chisel bit fastened directly on the drill steel is the most economical for Swedish conditions. This applies to drill steel up to the longest size it is practical to handle. In terms of drilling footage, durability of the drill steel and the tungsten carbide bit is generally the same. In this respect, therefore, a detachable bit offers no advantage over integral steel. Transportation of integral steel to the grinding plant, instead of detachable bits only, involves heavier work, but this is counteracted by placing grinding plants closer together or by grinding at the working place itself. The drilling rate with integral steel is higher, the trouble of changing bits is avoided, and the difficulties which always arise with joints are eliminated. At present steel dimensions are usually 7/8 in. with a shank 41/4 in. long, whereas the international standard shank was formerly 31/4 in. The longer shank renders possible a better guide control of the steel and consequently longer life for the rotation chuck and the water-flushing pipe. After extensive experiments and investigations, agreement has been reached in Sweden on certain series of standards, shown in Table I. Other steel dimensions are, of course, available for special purposes. The standard drill-steel set begins with a 34-mm diam and has a length interval of 2 2/3 ft. On the other hand, for ordinary drifting it has been proved more economical to use greater length intervals on the steel, so only one steel change is required for a 61/2-ft round. Moreover, owing to the relatively close hole spacing necessary in a drift round, it has been possible to reduce the diameters of the tungsten carbide bits. This results in faster and cheaper drilling. As shown by the table, the lengths of drill steels for normal drifting are 33/4 ft and 71/2 ft, with 29 and 28-mm diam bits. During the last few years operators have begun to use 3/4-in. drill steel in place of the 7/8-in. drill steel chiefly employed earlier. DURING the past 15 years in this country there have been few additions to the literature of lead smelting. After the consolidation of the principal smelting companies at the beginning of this period it became the policy of the larger company not to permit the publication of details in regard to many of its metallurgical processes. This led to similar action on the part of some of its competitors. The result, of course, was a decided decrease in the number of papers written upon the practical side of the subject. Even upon the theoretical side the contributions have been few. It would seem that the industry as a whole has suffered from this general unwillingness to exchange information. While it is true that a given company is entitled to the reward that may come from its own development of a new process, it is also true that a still greater reward might be the result of a free exchange of ideas with other plants. This principle has been recognized for a long time in other metallurgical industries, notably those engaged in the smelting of iron and the manufacture of steel. It is pleasing to note that the leading lead-smelting company has very recently decided to modify its policy of secrecy, and to permit the publication of papers covering some details of its metallurgical methods. The statement has been made that there has been but little progress in lead smelting during the period just referred to. This impression is due in part to the scarcity of papers written on the subject. There has been, it is true, some discussion of the new sintering processes, but with little reference to detail, and to the effect that blast roasting has had upon the industry as a whole. In spite of the prevailing belief, it may be said that lead smelting, in common with other metallurgical industries, has made steady and substantial progress. It is the purpose of the present paper to discuss briefly some features of the industry as it is now conducted, with special reference to the blast-furnace practice in the larger silver-lead smelting plants of the United States and Mexico.
