The boiler from which these stay-bolts have just been obtained was that of the locomotive Catasauqtia, Lehigh Valley Railroad, built at the company's shops, South Easton, Pa., in 1864. The iron is Lowmoor, and has been in use nearly ten years. The stay-bolts have become highly crystallized from some cause, and are very brittle, only requiring three blows of an ordinary machinist's hammer to break them. On the other hand, when annealed they are remarkably tough, as shown by the doubled sample. The majority of the broken bolts were found to be along the curve of the shell from a to c, Fig. 6. All of them were broken just inside the shell, and in no case next the fire-box. The fractures seem to have been of slow procedure, beginning at the top of the bolt, gradually working deeper and deeper until the pressure of steam overcame the tenacity of the remaining parts. Unequal contraction and expansion of the parts of the boiler seems in this case to be the only existing cause for a fracture. We cannot, from the data obtained, prove to an absolute certainty the manner in which the combined forces generated by the unequal contraction and expansion of the parts have arrived at their resultant work ; but we can, from these data and from existing circumstances, arrive at what seems to be a fair supposition, and thus at least anticipate the truth. The contraction and expansion in locomotive boilers has a large range between its extremes, and is very variable, both with reference to time and to their component parts. The shell and fire-box do not, perhaps, at any time, contract and expand at the same rate, nor proportionally; but, on the contrary, owing to the great changes in temperature that take place both in the atmosphere around the shell, and in the fire in the fire-box, their condition is often changed suddenly, and widely from that which they just previously had. THE Au-Ni alloy system is one of many binary systems in which the supersaturated solid solutions may exhibit a multistaged precipitation behavior during aging. In addition to the equilibrium phase separation, which was studied extensively years ago in the range 400" to 600",' there exists at least one earlier stage of precipitation, i.e., preprecipitation, which occurs below 300°C in quenched alls.-This note reports on some effects of composition on the preprecipitation in Au-Ni alloys as determined from resistivity measurements. The kinetics of the preprecipitation were studied in alloys of 15 to 85 at. pct Ni which were water- were found in alloys which after various quenching-and-aging treatments were slowly heated and cooled (1Z"C per hr) between room temperature and about 300°C. Two such heating-cooling curves for a 40 pct Ni alloy are shown in Fig. 2. Similar effects were observed in other 15 to 50 pct Ni alloys. These curves are characterized upon heating by two changes in slope indicated by A and B in the figure and upon cooling by a resistivity hysteresis of approximately the size of the original decrease in resistivity after the aging treatment. The inflection at B generally falls at about the same temperature for all heating curves for a given alloy and appears to be a critical temperature (T,) for the preprecipitation for that alloy. The values of T, for most of the 15 to 50 pct Ni alloys fall in the range 200" to 220°C. The position of the inflection at A depends upon the heat treatment prior to the heating-cooling run and perhaps the heating rate, which was held constant in these runs. The preprecipitates grown in by the appropriate aging treatments seem to decrease in size as the alloys are heated from A to T,, dissolve at T,, and do not reappear after cooling below T,. When similar heating-cooling treatments were performed on 60 to 85 pct Ni alloys, an entirely different behavior was observed. Typical results are shown in Fig. 3 for an 85 pct Ni alloy. In these

IT is customary to plot crystallographic planes or axes on a Wulff stereographic net which is ruled with parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude. If a single crystal is placed at the center of a sphere, the coordinates of a crystallographic plane or axis are the coordinates of the point where the axis intersects the sphere. The standard (HKL) projection is the projection for which the sphere is rotated so that the (HKL) pole is at the center of the projection. Schiebold and Sachs' and many others have published standard projections for the more important planes of a cubic crystal. With Tables I and 11, it is possible to plot any plane (HKL) of a cubic crystal on a standard (001) projection if the absolute values of the individual H, K, and L are nine or less, which is almost always the case. Using the methods outlined by Barrett,' the standard (001) projection can be rotated so that any arbitrary plane is at the center of the projection. The tables are believed to be important for two reasons: 1—The heretofore published standard projections usually are not of the proper size to fit the stereographic nets available. With these tables a standard projection can be made which will be of exactly the proper size for the available stereographic net. 2—With the tables, planes that do not appear on the previously published standard projections can be easily plotted. For these reasons, the tables are especially useful in the study of optical reflections from etched surfaces and can also be used to make a standard projection for the axis which is normal to the macroscopic surface. (This axis can be found by X-ray or optical methods.) Then if the crystal is etched, the effect of the etchant can readily be determined by comparing the latitude and longitude of the reflecting planes (as determined with an optical goniometer) with the standard projection that has been prepared. Having worked some rather lorn--grade gravel during the past season at a small profit, I give the actual figures, in the hope that other mining engineers interested in this line of work may be thereby induced to do the same, in order that we may all get more data on this little-ventilated subject. The property here referred to is situated in one of the northern counties of California, where hydraulic mining is still permitted by the courts. The water-right belonging to the mine is a good one, furnishing water during about nine months, whenever there is an average rain-fall, and a fair proportion of the precipitation is in the form of snow. The ditch, about 11 miles in length, is cared for during the rainy months by two men, and during the rest of the year by one; and the water cost last season, delivered at the mine, 0.69 cent per miners' inch. The season commenced in November, 1899, and ended the last of July, 1900. During this time, 655,657 miners' inches (an inch equals 1728 cu. ft. in 24 hours) of water were used for piping, and for sweeping the bed-rock at the end of the season. From actual surveys, this amount of water washed down 1,251,399 cu. yds. of material, consisting of pay-gravel lying on the bed-rock, and varying in thickness from a few inches to 8 ft., and practically barren top-material, consisting of mountain slide, carrying considerable broken rock, clay, and soil. The banks varied in height from 50 to 130 ft., the average height being 63 ft. The grade of the sluices was 7 in. to 12 ft., the boxes being paved with block-riffles 12 in. deep. Long bed-rock cuts extended from the heads of the sluices to within a few feet of the banks, and were kept practically to grade as the work advanced. They let the whole world know again that not only could we do it, but we make it look easy. The great crews before Scott, Irwin and Worden of Apollo 15 have all blended warm humor, informality and dexterity to put on a good show: but it keeps getting better and the last one was the best. Scott's rendition of Galileo's experiment using a hammer and a feather--not just any feather, but a falcon feather after the name of the LEM-was priceless. One generation of school kids will never forget that lesson. The final touch was in the "would-you-believe''" category, Now if English astronauts had been performing the mission, the sign-off would have been typically low key. Something like; "well its tea time, chaps; we'll have to toddle along." Apollo 15 surprised and thrilled spectators by blasting off to the Air Force song "Off we go into the wild blue yonder" and leaving a camera behind to photograph their own ascent. Now that is what we call showmanship. There is another aspect to our space show and that is that it cost billions of dollars to put on. With that kind of backing, the world for an audience and in the face of grave personal risk, one would expect the space explorers to be all business. Instead they did their jobs with limpid buoyancy. Our older readers will recall and contrast a movie of the thirties and the tense atmosphere when they had to talk that kid up there (Franchot Tone) down through the zero ceiling. A feat of considerably less difficulty than docking LEM. but nevertheless the gut tightening drama was absent in the latter event. In another example, few of us can visualize reporting back after a business mission to one of the old barons such as J. P. Morgan in any but the most sedate and business-like terms. In fact we don't have to go that far back, as we can think of a few pepper-pot bosses we have had to whom one always played it straight.

THE second operation in the art of casting, and one of the greatest importance, is that of melting and thoroughly liquefying the materials of which you wish to make your casting. On this operation depends the whole outcome of your intentions and the perfection of your work. Without it, even though you had a great abundance of moulds and vast quantities of bronze, your desires, labor, and expense would all be in vain. In this operation I find on consideration that, in addition to experience, there are three necessities-perhaps indeed four-that must be provided without fail. The first is the furnace or other agent which contains the fire and the metal brought together. The second is the wood or charcoal which is the necessary and proper nutriment of the fire, from whose virtues are derived the greater or lesser forces which, according to their kind, are ready to effect what is required. The third is to have the materials disposed to easy fusion by means of corruption, alloying, or by their own nature. The fourth, as the motivating cause of the whole, could perhaps be listed as the first-this is the ingenuity and good judgment of the worker, together with the bodily exertions not only of himself but also of his helpers in addition. For, besides a certain ordinary caution, it is necessary to pay particular attention, first, to see that the furnaces, machines, ladles, hearths, refineries, and other kinds of instruments or similar vessels be made so as to dispose the metals for melting, and, when melted, that they easily maintain them so. These should also be prepared in such a way that they cannot be injured by the fire, for if they should be damaged the operation would fail. In order to do this, it is first necessary that you arrange the instruments with forethought and action so that the power of the fire can operate. Fire operates on things only when brought together with them in long-continued operation, or when driven by a great force of wind. It burns many things and softens others, but it makes the metals as liquid as water.

The active mines in the Park City district at the present time are the Silver King Coalition, Daly-Judge, Daly West, and Silver King Consolidated. Several other companies, such as the Daly, American Flag, Ontario, etc., are doing considerable development work. In the Silver King Coalition mines the ore is a replacement of a dark siliceous limestone bed, varying in .thickness from 18 in. to several feet. In places the ore has reached a thickness of 25 ft. This limestone bed lies within 100 ft. of the underlying Weber quartzite. There are other lime beds, similar in appearance to this one, in the Park City formation, which is approximately 700 ft. thick; but not one of them has been found to contain any traces of ore. Directly under and in contact with the ore-bearing bed is another, composed of gray lime well studded with dark concretionary nodules; and this one is an unfailing indication of the proximity of the ore-bearing bed. These ore deposits make out from or have connection with some one of the ore-bearing fissures, which were undoubtedly the channels for the circulation of mineral-bearing solutions. It is therefore proper to run prospecting drifts in the fissures, although they seldom contain much ore. As a general rule, drifting in the fissures is not costly. Mining and mucking cost from $2.50 to $4 per foot, and very little timber is required. There are instances, as in the Daly fissure in the Daly-Judge mine, where the expense of keeping drifts open in the fissure is so great that it has proved economical to make the drifts in the foot-wall rock and run crosscuts into the fissure at short intervals. In the Park City mines it is not easy to determine beforehand the best method fir extracting the ore from a newly discovered ore shoot in the bedded deposits. While we may get one dimension from the drift run in the fissure, that will not give us a correct idea as to the other dimensions of the orebody. The fissures here referred to have a N. 35" E.

The concepts of nucleation and of growth have adequately described the isothermal phase transformations to which they have been applied.ls2 However, these concepts have not yet been used successfully to describe the kinetics of a number of transformations that are not observed to take place isothermally. A typical reaction of this type is the austenite to martensite transformation in steels, for which the new phase appears only during cooling of the parent phase. If the cooling is interrupted, transformation ceases; yet had the cooling continued, transformation would also have continued. Nuclei of a new phase do not leap into existence all at once by the simultaneous cooperation of a large number of atoms or molecules of the parent phase; rather they are formed at finite rates by gaining or losing atoms one at a time from the surrounding materiaL3,4 Further thermo-dynamic considerations require a finite concentration of small transitory nuclei of all unstable phases to exist at equilibrium in a stable phase.= For steel in particular, nuclei of ferrite (a iron) exist at equilibrium in austenite (y iron) at temperatures where austenite is the stable phase. If a high-temperature phase a be cooled sufficiently rapidly from temperature TI above the a-ß equilibrium temperature To, to temperature T-1 below To where ß is the stable phase, the equilibrium distribution of ß nuclei corresponding to the high temperature will be retained. There are two limiting possibilities of particular interest: I. The steady state rate of nucleation of ß may be appreciable at T_1, and may require a concentration of sub-critical nuclei exceeding that retained from the high temperature. Time will be required then for the concentration of nuclei to build up to the steady state value, and an induction period will be observed during which the rate of nucleation will increase to the steady state value. 2. The steady state rate of nucleation of ß may be negligible at T-l, while the critical size for continuous growth of ß nuclei, which decreases with increased subcooling of the a phase, may reach a value so small that some. of the retained high-temperature nu-

Va.-How near the size of the sand can the coal to be treated be brought? Do you use an 8-mesh coal on that cleaner? J. J. RUTLEDGE, Baltimore, Md.-From the little I have seen of the apparatus in operation, I should say 8-mesh. In my experience in metalmine concentration work, trying to separate different minerals on one jig, sometimes I have succeeded and sometimes not. This apparatus has appealed to me; something of this kind should be useful with the silicates and carbonates of zinc. I think this apparatus has possibilities in metal mining. Recently in our coal field a screen has been introduced for cleaning coal; it is giving excellent service. When I asked the inventor why he did not take it to the metal mines, he said there was a good and sufficient reason, in a patent way. There may be reasons why it would not be applicable for metal mining; but the simplicity of it appeals to me and I cannot see why it could not be so used. T. FRASER (written discussion).-We feel that 8-mesh would be about -the minimum size of coal practicable to treat by the air-sand process. This would depend partly upon the friability of the coal. The more nearly the lower size limits of the coal- approaches the size of the sand, the more .time will be required in screening the sand out of the cleaned coal, which would mean a little more chance of breakage. In regard to the treatment of ores; this would necessitate the use of some heavier mediums than ordinary silica sand, or some other means of making the separation at a higher specific gravity than is required for coal. We are now working on a method of obtaining this effect for the preparation of anthracite coal without resorting to the use of heavier and more expensive material than common sand.

The Round Table Discussion on Petroleum Engineering Research was planned for two purposes. First, to review the work that has been done by petroleum engineers during the past few years on problems that have confronted the industry and, second, to suggest new studies that should be made either on the problems that have been the subject of research during the past or on problems that have arisen only recently. It was believed that by holding an informal discussion of the problems in which the petroleum engineer is vitally interested it would be possible to bring out new ideas as to the relative importance of the different problems that should be studied and to suggest new methods for attacking some of the problems that have resisted the energies of research workers throughout the industry. It was also believed that by arranging for an exchange of experiences between the different engineers it would be possible to prevent a large amount of duplication of effort in conducting research work. Those engaged in petroleum engineering research realize that there is a broad field for study and by coordinating the work it will be possible to obtain the maximum amount of information in the shortest possible time. In planning the program on Petroleum Engineering Research, nine subjects were selected for discussion and each was assigned to a man who is doing work on that subject. These men were asked to lead the discussion on the problem assigned to each one. An effort was made to choose problems of a practical nature and upon which considerable work is being conducted at the present time. Some of the men who were asked to lead the discussion were unable to attend the meeting but most of them submitted a written discussion- of the subject assigned, with the result that there was a discussion of eight of the nine problems. Professor Uren, who was asked to lead the discussion on the subject of Recent Developments in Methods for Reducing Gas-oil Ratios, was unable to attend the meeting and advised that he did not have any new ideas to contribute.

The difficulties encountered in the preparation of the lead smelter charge for the blast furnace and in the roasting and sintering of the ores, and the expert means taken for the preparation of these materials since the introduction of flotation concentrates into the lead smelter charge, have been described by W. H. Eardleyl and R. A. Wagstaff.² Function of Roasters and Blast Furnaces The lead smelter has first its roasters and its sintering devices, of which the primary object is the removal of sulfur from the ore or from the charge. The blast furnace follows; its function being the elimination of the gangue material left in the charge—the elimination of the insoluble, the iron, the zinc and the lime from the metallic lead. The secondary object is the separation of copper from the lead. A lead blast furnace is a sensitive apparatus. The materials composing the charge must be marshalled in certain proportions before they will make a fluid slag which will separate from the metallic lead. The silica, iron, lime and zinc must be put together in proportions that usually do not mist naturally in the ores, therefore fluxes are necessary. Function of the Flotation Cell The flotation cell—-speaking from the standpoint of a lead concentrate—has taken over part of the work hitherto performed entirely by either gravity concentration or the lead blast furnace. It has eliminated gangue from the concentrate and separated waste products from the lead. In so far as it has done that, it has usurped some of the function of the lead blast furnace; and it is much cheaper to run a flotation cell than a lead blast furnace. The effect in Utah, and it will be similar to effects in other districts. has been to remove a great deal of the gangue by means of flotation, whereas in the old clays it was eliminated by means of sme1ting. In this district, as in others, the insoluble content of the ores has been greatly out of proportion to the iron and lime content to make a proper slag

F. JOHNSON,* Birmingham, England (written discussion t).--. Mr. Skowronski's first melting experiments tend to show that ingots with a "level set" may be obtained without oxygen. Now it is characteristic of all metals which occupy a smaller volume when solid than they do when molten to "pipe." In vertical-cast ingots, this pipe resembles a horn-shaped cavity, with the wide mouth uppermost. In horizontal-cast ingots, the pipe is a longitudinal furrow along the center-line of the ingot surface. If copper be successfully deoxidized and degasified, this furrow will inevitably be produced. In the author's oxygen-free ingots, it is. clear that gases were occluded and these gases effectively opposed the formation of a pipe or furrow by shrinkage (fluid contraction). It is riot a special property of any particular gas which produces this effect. Hence it is not surprising that the author has succeeded in producing level and overpoled ingots through the agency of sulphur. dioxide gas. That he has counteracted the overpoling influence of sulphur by means of oxygen is somewhat difficult to explain, since the well known reaction between cuprous sulphide and cuprous oxide should result in the production of sulphur dioxide gas. Why the presence of excess cuprous oxide should neutralize the overpoling influence of this gas without eliminating sulphur is not at all clear. It is to be regretted that the oxygen was not determined in the bars given in Tables 3 and 4. It is by no means established that sulphur is responsible for the over, poling of ingots given in Table 4, since carbon was used for overpoling. If, however, the same kind of poling treatment was given as that applied in the case of ingots in Table 1, the responsibility of sulphur assumes more definite shape. The author rightly points out that Mr. Johnson's theory of the equilibrium between gases and cuprous oxide does not explain why a simple addition of cuprous oxide does not correct an overpoled charge. Such a charge must be re-worked to "set" copper. This re-working (rabbling) undoubtedly forcibly removes the excess gases, which are not removable by cuprous oxide.

By definition the word "grout" means a thin mortar, or a kind of plaster or cement, and "grouting" means to fill up or finish with grout. The words "cement," "plaster" and "mortar" mean a substance that is used in a soft state which subsequently hardens. Thus, grouting is the filling of void space with a substance that hardens. Construction cements are the most common substances used, either by themselves or in mixtures, but the term grouting is applied quite correctly when other substances such as plastics and certain chemicals are used. Also, the use of the term grouting to cover the filling of voids with materials that do not actually become hard, such as the flotation tailings used in grouting in the southeast Missouri lead district, should be considered correct, as some stiffening does take place and, anyway, it is a better descriptive term than any substitute. Engineers are interested in grouting because some of the materials with which they must work contain voids, and certain conditions can be improved if these voids can be filled with something solid and permanent. Grouting is done to accomplish several purposes: I. To stop the passage of fluids and gases, 2. To cement materials together to make them stronger, and 3. To prevent consolidation of materials by filling void space with something solid as a replacement for the air and water that could be forced out under load. The construction industry uses grouting extensively for all three purposes. Grouting is used to stop water percolation under and around dams. It is used to control water flow in tunnel driving and in shaft sinking. It is used to improve foundation conditions under civil engineering structures by permanently filling void space and thereby reducing settlement, or by cementing broken rock together and increasing its supporting strength. The oil and gas industry does a lot of grouting, primarily to stop the passage of gases and fluids. The search for oil at increasingly greater depths has meant greater investment per well, and the oil industry has spent large sums on development of improved drilling methods. This

the hammering effect acts only to a point 3 in. back from the cutting edge, and the hardening heat extends back only 1 in. from the cutting edge. Then, as a steel is taken from the fire, the grain condition is as shown in Fig. I. After the forging operation has been performed the condition shown by Fig. 2 exists. The heating operation to harden the cutting edge produces the effect shown in Fig. 3. The questions that naturally arise are: Will the cost of the extra heat treatment necessary to change this condition (annealing) be more than the saving that may be effected in the drill steel or will the extra heating be an economical as well as a wise thing to do? Is this condition necessarily detrimental to the maximum service of the drill steel? Can this annealing action be obtained in the hardening heat by heating more of the bit, say at least 5 in., to the hardening temperature but quenching only the end of the bit by a shallow immersion? Short Rock-drill Steels Reclaimed by Welding By W. T. Ober, Lynn, Mass. Experimental tests by the Thompson Company have shown that short lengths of rock-drill steels may be reclaimed by electric butt welding. The drills used in the experiments were hollow drills l1/4-in. in diametcr containing 0.95 per cent. to 1.05 per cent. carbon. The ends to be joined must first be ground off fairly square and the greater part of the rust, scale, etc. removed for 3 or 4 in. back in order to insure good electrical contact with the dies of the welder and countersunk, with an 80° countersink, approximately 1/4 in. The steels are then clamped in the copper dies of the welder, so that a length projects from the inside edge of each pair of dies equivalent to from one-half to three-quarters the diameter of the drill. The drills should also be brought into accurate alignment. The first step is to bring the ends into close proximity and then close the primary circuit of the transformer, slowly bringing the steels together until their ends lightly touch, when they will "flash," that is, minute

Production of crude oil in Tennessee during 1935 approximated 20,000 bbl., an increase of about 5000 bbl. over 1934. The total production for the state is an estimate, since the only definite figures available are those for Scott and Morgan counties, where 12,377 bbl. were marketed during 1935, an increase of 4305 bbl. over the preceding year. The oil fields of Scott and Morgan counties are near the eastern margin of the Cumberland Plateau where Pennsylvanian sediments rest uncon-formably upon the Mississippian. Near Glenmary, in Scott County, the production is from the middle Mississippian, probably near the top of the St. Louis limestone. Accumulation is due to a low, east-west anticline which has been cut by a fault. This field is now 20 years old and only a few wells are pumped at present. Oil was Struck along Boone Camp Creek in Morgan County in 1924 and there has been small production since that time. The oil comes from the middle of the Fort Payne formation of lower Mississippian age at a depth of 1400 ft. Geologic work in the area has shown that a terrace and porosity conditions in the Fort Payne formation account for the accumulation. The production figures on a number of small producing wells in Clay and Overton counties are not available. As pointed out by Glenn1, the installation of small local skimming or topping plants in the fields has curtailed the shipment of crude oil out of the state and as a result it has been impossible to secure accurate production figures in these counties. The operators, in most cases, are reluctant to give information, and there is no state law requiring them to do so. Based upon information available to the writers, it is believed that between 7000 and 8000 bbl. is a fair estimate of the production in Clay and Overton counties during 1935. More than 500 wells have been drilled in Clay County, the majority of which were drilled east of Cumberland River. The arrangement of a flow of cyanide-pulp through Pachuca tanks in agitation, so as to permit a continuous process, instead of alternate filling, agitation, and emptying, has been proposed by various writers within the last two years, and more particularly by A. T. Grothe, agent for the Brown patents on Pachuca tanks in Mexico. It was first put into practice, I believe, by M. H. Kuryla at the Esperanza mine in El Oro, Mexico. The starting of agitation in Pachuca tanks after filling may offer no serious difficulties with ores which do not settle rapidly in such tall tanks; and the adaptation of the tanks to continuous agitation under such conditions may give simply a somewhat more convenient method of treatment and greater agitation-capacity for a given number of tanks, because of the saving of time lost in filling and discharging. But in the treatment of pulp which tends to settle rapidly, as in the cyaniding of concentrates or of the whole pulp of ores containing heavy sulphides, the packing of the slime at the bottom may cause much trouble. The use of the radial air-pipe attachments near the top of the cone and of the air-valve outside of the air-lift tube at the bottom may obviate the difficulty to some extent; but the action of the radial air-pipes on the cone-sides is that of a sand-blast, and their continuous use cuts through the tanks. Moreover, even when these pipes are used, some pulps will pack tightly below them in the cones. Under such conditions the use of Pachuca tanks with intermittent filling and discharging becomes a troublesome process. Time is lost in starting agitation; large quantities of compressed air are wasted; pulp is blown over the tank-tops; and not infrequently it may be necessary to dig out the bottoms of tanks by hand. This trouble is the only important one occurring in the use of Pachuca tanks; and, since it is caused by intermittent filling, the arrangement of a continuous flow of pulp from tank to tank,

Mine models are of great value to the student and to the layman in visualizing underground conditions, and, in a measure, should be just as much a part of the equipment of a mining school as sets of ore specimens, catalogs, or drawings. The chief drawback, as Professor Stock has indicated, is the time and cost of making them. The greatest good in the development of the model comes to the person who makes it, and I have often wondered whether it might not be possible to have each student make one model during his undergraduate career. At the University of Washington we have been collecting sets of mine timbers, made of 6 by 6-in. lumber, illustrating shaft, level, and stope timbering. This work has been done by freshmen. Perhaps each educational institution could specialize in the creation of a certain type of model and exchange its product for that of another school, just as we now do with ore collections. In this way we could build up good museums at a relatively low cost. JOHN R. CHAMBERLIN, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary?).-The type of model described by Professor Stoek is admirably suited to exhibits of coal mining in horizontal veins, and fulfills perfectly the three purposes mentioned. As an educational illustration in colleges, especially when the students themselves build the model under the direction of their instructors, it is of the highest value; and as each condition in mining requires special methods to depict properly in a model, the student is compelled to exercise considerable inventive resource to construct a true representation, stimulating the imagination and interest in his subject. Models built for exhibits in lawsuits are usually constructed to show prominently some particular feature of vein formation or geology, or the relation of underground workings to surface property lines, and as such their use is invaluable to the successful litigant. When the litigation is ended, it is natural that the model should be relegated to the basement and frequently destroyed, as data on underground workings are often considered of a private character by the operators; and it is

W. C. MATTESON (communication to the Secretary*).-The criticism and question raised by Arthur Knapp regarding the standardization of nomenclature is most important. Faulty rock classification-is generally the result of carelessness or ignorance on the part of the driller. Two remedies might be suggested. In a field where several large companies are operating on an extensive scale, a geologist from each concern might be assigned to superintend the gathering of well-log data and the classification of samples. The geologists from the several operating companies might then combine their data, which would doubtless give valuable information to all interested parties. At present, coordination is not a big factor, unfortunately, but the time will come when conservation will demand such systematic coordination on the part of competing companies. The second remedy lies in instructing and educating the driller to a thorough understanding of the importance of an accurate log and correct classification of the various formations. The writer does not agree with the statement that "90 per cent. of the logs as taken today are absolutely worthless to any one but the one who has taken the log." While mistakes in nomenclature often occur, the driller is generally able to classify the important water-, oil-, and gas-bearing formations with a fair degree of accuracy. Such information is often sufficient to permit accurate correlation and also constitutes valuable data for projection purposes. It must be borne in mind that to attempt to use well-log data in a strict scientific sense of accuracy is impracticable and impossible. A broad interpretation and a comprehensive knowledge of the practical limits of such' information are essential in applying it successfully. Even experienced geologists do not always agree on rock classification. The question as to what constitutes correct nomenclature should receive the earnest and immediate attention of geologists, operators, and producers. Although standard textbooks on geology give correct definitions and descriptions of the general rock species, such textbooks fail to develop the subject in sufficient detail for the work under consideration. The finding of Wojciechowski and Chalmers that columnar crystal growth can be stopped by an already existing network of equiaxed crystals is supported by other recently reported work on both static and mechanically stirred ingots.27,28 Support for the dendrite arm fragmentation mechanism, too, can be obtained by comparing the effects of spinning on ingots cast in a material which has a dendritic solid/liquid interface during solidification with one which has a cellular interface, since no evidence of change at the interface, other than a change in growth direction, can be found in the cellular material. But there are alternative ways of producing an equiaxed zone in materials which characteristically solidify with a cellular interface. For example, interrupted spinning of a normally cast ingot can do it. In this case it has been shown28 that the equiaxed zone is caused by the showing of dendritic particles from the top surface of the ingot to nucleate a network of equiaxed crystals which forms a barrier to the continued growth of the columnar grains. This showering has also been shown to be a major effect in materials solidifying with dendritic interfaces. It has also been proposed28,29 that, for an equiaxed zone to form, not only must nuclei be present ahead of the interface but also these nuclei must grow to sufficient size to be a barrier to the further growth of the columnar grains. A further requirement is that a network of these grains continually be produced ahead of the growing interface; otherwise there is a reversion to columnar growth as found by Wojciechowski and Chalmers. In normally cast ingots it is possible for nuclei ahead of the interface to grow since during a large portion of the solidification time there is no temperature gradient ahead of the interface,30 and, in fact, the liquid may be slightly undercooled.29 This then is the major difference between the work under discussion and normal industrial solidification conditions, since Wojciechowski and Chalmers imposed a considerable temperature gradient in the liquid. DIAMOND drilling has become a very important factor in mining. It is the most satisfactory method of obtaining proof of the existence of an orebody and of determining the character and extent of the body, in measures where a core can be made. Large investments are based on the information obtained. The method of development, the mine and reduction plants, and subsidiary essentials as railways are often built without other information. The Mond Nickel Co. has drilled about 50,000 ft. (15,240 m.) per yr. for several years and has given considerable study to the question of improving the methods and of overcoming the limitations of this means of securing information. One of the main limitations of the diamond drill has been its inability to drill a straight hole. To depths of 1000 ft. (304 in.) the deflection is often not large but all holes tend to curve and take somewhat erratic courses. A hole running at a small angle to a fissure plane tends to run, along the fissure. If the hole is at a large angle, the tendency is to penetrate the fissure plane at right angles. The face of the bit having one side in solid formation beyond the fissure, the other in the selvage of the fissure tends to turn, the rods curving to the extent of their clearance in the hole. Usually rock measures have somewhat regular fissuring or strata and holes take somewhat similar courses, usually at right angles to the fissuring or strata. Excessive pressure or short or worn core barrels increase curvature. Slow speeds, correct feeds, sharp hits, and core barrels the full size of the hit, tend to decrease curvature but do not prevent it Curvature once started increases rapidly. The disappointments from crooked holes have been numerous. Discoveries have later been found to be on the properties of others. One Canadian company had a hole, supposedly discovering ore 300 ft. (91 m.) from old workings, unexpectedly turn in 8 ft. (2.4 m.) of wooden core from a timber in the old workings.
