I. INTRODUCTION. AMONG the industrial enterprises which have, from time to time, been undertaken in our Dominion, few have been more uniformly unsuccessful than those which have had for their object the development of our mineral resources. These resources have not been regarded as insignificant. On the contrary, it is supposed that we possess in our ore deposits something more than mere points of mineralogical interest. Some people are enthusiastic enough to believe that our mineral wealth will yet occasion the establishment in our backwoods of happy and industrious communities, causing, in fact, our wilderness to blossom as the rose. These enthusiasts do not shut their eyes to the serious obstacles which at every stage interfere with the carrying out of mining enterprises in this country, and which tempt one to believe that no such enterprise can ever be conducted to a desirable end, but they entertain the conviction that as our capitalists, miners, and technologists reach the years of discretion, and handle our mines in an economical, vigorous, and judicious manner, and as our statesmen become alive to the necessity of fostering, without extremely protecting, our metallurgical industries, mines and furnaces will gradually prosper, and so develop as to become a tower of strength to our agricultural, manufacturing, and mercantile interests. The fact that our past experience does not generally justify such glowing anticipations makes one all the more anxious to put on record the history of a successful mine, such as the Silver Islet has, on the whole, been. My connection with its discovery and early development was a very intimate one, and I propose in this paper to sketch its history and character, and sum up the amount of silver it has so far yielded. An additional reason for the appearance of this paper is that the Transactions of the Institute contain only a few references to the Silver Islet Mine. The phenomenon of diffusion, according to the most prevalent conceptions at the present time, undoubtedly played an important part in the formation and distribution of metals and minerals in the earth's crust. Apparently there is good evidence that in the geological rate of cooling diffusion caused numerous materials to separate into individual masses or into duplex structures. As is well known, the early steels were made by cementation; that is, by heating wrought ferrous metal in contact with carburizing materials so as to produce a relatively high carbon content on the surface. If the process was continued long enough, the carbon diffused throughout the piece. A more homogeneous product depended upon further heating and forging, so that the carbon diffused to a fairly uniform concentration throughout the metal. In the modern metallurgical industry, diffusion is the basis for many operations; for example, the production of hard surfaces on steels by carburizing, nitriding, cementing with chromium, silicon, boron and beryllium. Castings or ingots as they solidify do not have homogeneous structures, but these structures are made largely homogeneous by suitable process of heat-treating and the resulting diffusion. It is in modern physical metallurgy, however, that we become greatly concerned about the mechanism of the phenomenon of diffusion. The rates of diffusion, effect of temperature and time on diffusion, and the relation of diffusion to the many properties of the parent metal and the diffusing metal have become important; also, we are concerned with the diffusion of a single metal into a complex alloy. For example, what is the mechanism whereby carbon and nitrogen travel into steel? What is the effect of alloying elements in the ferrous material on the rates of diffusions? What is the effect of simultaneous diffusion of carbon and nitrogen? How does chromium, beryllium, boron, or the like, diffuse into the steel, and what are the effects of alloying elements in the steel previous to the cementation process? THE primary interest in the subject of this chapter lies in the fact that various heats of steel made to the same chemical specification do not always-have the same properties. The properties considered here, of course, are those inherent in the ingot immediately after solidification and not qualities imparted by variations in subsequent mechanical or thermal treatment. The expression "made to the same chemical specification" is used because some of the variations in properties are due to variations in chemical analysis within the specified ranges of those elements commonly specified and determined. Other variations in properties are due to variations in those constituents of steel (elements or compounds) that are not ordinarily included among the elements specified, thus not a part of the specified "composition." The term "constitution" is used to include not only the specified composition but also the nature and distribution of every element or compound contained in the steel entering the ingot mold; also included are items such as aluminum oxides and nitrides, presence of soluble gases, and dispersion of nonmetallic particles. When it is considered that the constitution of steel is determined by the addition or absorption into the bath of all such constituents from whatever source, it follows that constitution is of necessity the final result of steelmaking practice. It is the agency through which steelmaking practice operates to control the properties of the steel. The term steelmaking practice is here used in the broad sense, meaning the control of all the materials entering the steel and of the conditions under which the process is carried out. Steelmaking practice, thus defined, establishes the chemical system within which the reactions between components must proceed in obedience to the laws of chemistry. Thus the chemical constitution of the steel is established and, through constitution, the properties of the metal are established. In the preceding chapters it has been shown how the constitu-

The increasing use of mechanization at the face of the workings in coal mining and the consequent necessity of special supports of the roof has led, in several countries, to considerable scientific investigation, including physical tests in mines as well as on specimens of roof rocks to obtain data on the behavior of the immediate roof strata and on the effect of its pressure on supports while the coal is being mined. The investigations discussed in this paper do not include studies of the ultimate effect of subsidence and movement of the roof rock over the mine excavation, upon higher strata and the surface, but are confined to the immediate underground effects in the workings. The more recent principal investigations which have been brought to the attention of the writer are as follows: Germany.—The trial of strip packing, the usual method employed in Great Britain in longwall workings, as compared with complete packing heretofore used in Germany and in France to minimize subsidence; the behavior and strength of metal props under load; the testing of the strength of coal measure rocks, in the laboratory of the Technical High School of Breslau; and an investigation, by a special commission, concerning "bumps" as a possible cause of instantaneous outbursts of gas in coal mines of Lower Silesia. France.—The cause of instantaneous outbursts of gas in the Gard mines and tests by the official French experimental organization of the "electrical resistivity" of coal as a possible means of detecting a condition preceding an instantaneous outburst. Great Britain.—The subsidence of the roof and rise of the floor preceding and during excavation of the coal, in longwall and in room-and-pillar or bord-and-pillar workings; the compression and lateral movement of the road packs in longwall back from the face; the extent of separation of the immediate roof layers from the higher strata following mining excavation;

The correct sampling of coal and coke is becoming important to an ever increasing number of producers and consumers. This, therefore, may be an opportune moment to examine where we stand with regard to existing and proposed methods. In this paper an attempt will be made to review, as briefly as possible, some of the considerable amount of painstaking research which has been done in the last 10 years, and which has unquestionably led to a much better understanding of the subject. In so doing we shall try, on the one hand, to make clear where substantial progress has been made, and on the other hand, to draw attention to points that require further investigation. The paper is divided into sections in order to emphasize the major divisions of the subject; further, in order to retain this emphasis, detailed consideration of some of the points has been relegated to appendixes. No attempt has been made to give a complete survey of the literature, as this has already been done by L. A. Bushell.2 The following abbreviations will be used: A.E., average error; P.E., probable error; S.W.R., size-weight ratio; B.S.I., British Standards Institution. Section 1.—Cost It has often been stated that the cost of sampling should bear some relationship to the value of the product, and since coal is a relatively cheap raw material it would be a major error to specify, for ordinary commercial purposes, elaborate and costly methods of sampling which nobody would adopt. Specifications must be of such a nature that they will be used. We believe that one of the achievements of the last 10 years has been to reduce the cost of sampling. There is, however, another point to be considered; via., that the cost of sampling should bear some relationship to the value of the investigation. The late Alexander Holley said, on returning from a careful study of the relative merits of the Bessemer and the open-hearth processes, as shown in the best European practice, that, in this country, the open-hearth process would live to attend the funeral of the Bessemer ; and he said this several years ago, when in this country the Bessemer plant and practice had been developed to far outstrip that abroad, and when, proportionately, it had reached an advancement much beyond the improvements in open-hearth plants and practice. At the same time, the prevailing idea in the metallurgical world, a few years ago, seemed to be in favor of the substitution of Bessemer for open-hearth steel for most of the higher qualities, and Bessemer enthusiasts loudly proclaimed, that as good steel for all purposes could be obtained by their favorite process as by the open-hearth. It was, in fact, confidently prophesied that very soon tool-steel and similar grades, which consumers had learned to specify, in ordering, to be made by the crucible process, would by common consent be made by the Bessemer, as best adapted to give the desired results. But these expectations have failed to materialize; not only do the crucible people keep on in the even tenor of their way and talk with pride of their comparatively large outputs of " hundreds " of tons per month, as usual, but the open-hearth people have kept fast hold of their original domain of nearly the entire amount of sheared plates, of locomotive tires, of large forgings, spring-steel, agricultural steel, steel castings and the like. Further, owing largely to one of the great advantages of the Bessemer process, which is also one of its inherent dangers, namely, its large output, it has also fallen into considerable disrepute for structural purposes. Not a few experienced engineers are now stipulating in their specifications that Bessemer steel will not be allowed to be used, especially for tension-members.

Use of the discretized batch-grinding model for the simulation of locked-cycle grinding tests from batch-grinding data is illustrated. The simulated results were compared with actual locked-cycle experimental data for the dry grinding of dolomite. To illustrate the utility of this simulation method, a number of relationships between operating and performance parameters were generated, including relations between batch grinding and the Bond test, the production rate and the circulating load, and the production rate and the product size. A large amount of testing is done each year in the mineral industry for use with grinding unit cperations, and much of the experimental test data is obtained by the tedious locked-cycle testing procedure. In addition to being experimentally complex and requiring large amounts of sample, the very nature of the locked-cycle experiment yields results that cannot readily be interpreted. The attempts that have been made to model comminution systems during the last few years may provide a better and simpler way to obtain and analyze grinding test data; these models involve elements of both fitting to "model equations" and deterministic representations.1-1 The traditional engineering design techniques for comminution systems have relied mainly upon large amounts of industrial operating data that have been correlated with locked-cycle grinding data.',' Bond's empirical mill-design procedure involving locked cycle testing remains the most generally available method to this day. The purpose of the present paper is to show how much more useful data can be obtained from a simple batch-grinding experiment that provides information which subsequently can be utilized with population balance models of the grinding process to simulate locked-cycle behavior. These simulation results can, of course, be used in Bond's general design scheme. However, the combination of batch-grinding tests and the population balance model allows many more conditions to be considered than do single laboratory tests under specific locked-cycle conditions. The use of these simulation techniques for prediction of locked-cycle behavior represents one of the first practical applications for the simulation method in comminution.

NonmEtallic inclusions in steel have received much attention by metallurgists during the past few years. Many investigators have been emphatic in stating their belief that these impurities are the chief causes of steel failures, while others think that their effects are negligible. One of the main reasons that definite information on the effects of these impurities is lacking is that no reliable method has been developed for the exact determination of the amounts of these different impurities in steel. Some valuable new information has been brought out by a reliable method for nonmetallic inclusions which has been developed at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the Metallurgical Advisory Board. This procedure satisfactorily extracts some of the more common inclusions from steels, thus enabling the investigator to correlate steel failures with inclusion content. Although the data given herein are the first to be published on the subject of the electrolytic extraction method, the interest in the subject is evidenced by the fact that it is already being used by some 20 to 30 steel companies for their various purposes. Some of the comments received from these laboratories indicate that the method is highly satisfactory: the unfavorable comments, when traced to their sources, have been found to be based on some small mistake made in either installation or operation. The chief discrepancy seems to have occurred in attempts to apply the method to the extraction of inclusions from alloy steels. The procedure can be used only for the plain carbon steels and for such low alloy steels as those containing the usual amount of copper (0.2 to 0.3 per cent). Steels containing the carbide-forming alloys such as chromium, tungsten, etc., present far too many difficulties for the accurate determination of inclusions. Luckily, the iron and manganese carbides do not offer any difficulties and no contamination of the oxide-sulfide residue results, It is highly probable that some modification of the following

The electrolytic plant at Trail, B. C., was erected by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Ltd., for the treatment of zinc ores and concentrates, particularly those of the Sullivan mine at Kimberley, B. C. It began operations in 1916 at a rated capacity of 60 tons of cathodes per day, which has been steadily increased to the present production of 400 tons per day. The Sullivan has furnished the greater part of the zinc so far produced, although notable tonnages of customs zinc concentrates have been treated. The maximum yearly tonnage of customs concentrates, 25,000 tons, was treated in 1926. Practically no customs concentrates hale been treated since 1929. The total bar zinc production to the close of 1935 was 1,092,782 tons. The zinc mineral in the Sullivan ore is marmatite of somewhat variable composition, ranging between 6ZnS.FeS and 8 ZnS.FeS. Practically all the zinc ores tributary to this plant are marmatites; and the iron content of the zinc mineral varies considerably. The formation of zinc ferrite during roasting is now a matter of common knowledge, so the possible extraction from any zinc concentrate is largely a function of the iron content; the progress made in concentration is reflected directly in zinc-plant recovery. The Trail plant operafes on the low-acid system, as do all the other major plants on this continent at present operating, except the electrolytic plant of the Sullivan Mining Co. at Kellogg, Idaho. The new Magdeburg plant, in Germany, occupies an intermediate position between high and low acid. Plant operation at Trail will be treated in this paper under five main sections: roasting, leaching and purification, electrolysis, cadmium recovery and melting. The oxide section of the plant, treating zinc fume from re-treatment of lead blast-furnace slag, is practically a separate zinc plant; this is necessary because of the presence of fluorine in the smelter zinc fume. Cadmium is recovered electrolytically from the purification residues of both the sulphide and oxide leaching plants.

FLOTATION of ores is a practical utilization of the energy that resides in the surfaces of solids and liquids. The best known manifestation of this energy is called surface tension; an equally important, though less apparent, phenomenon is adsorption. This paper reviews some of the recent investigations of these phenomena, and gives the results of certain experiments performed by the authors. Surface tension is a manifestation of energy having its seat at the bounding surface between the adjacent phases of a multiphase system. Thus, at the interface between a liquid and a gas, or between two immiscible liquids, or between a solid and a gas or a liquid, there are forces capable of doing work, their magnitude depending on the nature of the adjacent phases and the extent of the bounding area. These surface forces are inappreciable when the ratio of surface to volume of the adjacent phases is small, but they become powerful when this ratio becomes large, as it does when one of the phases is highly dispersed. Froth flotation, which consists in buoying solids heavier than water to the surface of water by means of gas bubbles, utilizes the force of surface tension to attach the solid particles to the gas bubbles and again to maintain the floating mass of bubbles as a more or less persistent froth at the surface of a pulp for a sufficiently long time to allow its removal. It follows from the second law of thermodynamics that the potential energy of a system in equilibrium is a minimum. Therefore a multiphase system, tending toward equilibrium, will arrange itself in such a way that the total energy of the interfaces will be the least possible. This investigation of low copper-nickel silvers was untiertaken to check the work of Lèon Guillet on special brasses and to determine, more accurately, the effect of the addition of nickel on the mierostructure of the binary alloys of copper arid zinc. It was hoped that the results could be successfully applied to the practical production of low copper-nickel silvers. To explain the results of his investigations on special brasses, Lèon Guillet evolved his conception of "fictitious compositions." He states,' in his general conclusions, that on the introduction of a small amount of a third metal to a copper-zinc alloy, it enters into solid solution with the normal constituents up to saturation, but by so doing it brings the ternary alloy into a state microscopically equivalent to a binary copper-zinc alloy of fictitious composition, and physically more nearly like the latter than the brass containing copper-zinc in the ratio actually present. The physical properties of the ternary alloy, when compared to the same properties of an actual brass of the fictitious composition, are modified by the natural properties of the third element. Beyond the point of saturation, a special constituent appears and the above generalization no longer holds. For example, if a 60:40 brass has 4 per cent. of tin substituted for 4 per cent. of zinc, the actual composition would analyze 60:36:4. Assuming that 1 per cent. of tin plays the same part as 2 per cent. of zinc, the proportions of copper and equivalent zinc may be stated as 60 parts of copper and 44 parts of zinc, which, figured to 100 per cent., gives an analysis of 57.7 per cent. of copper and 42.3 per cent. of zinc, the fictitious composition for a 60:36:4 tin brass. The relation between ternary alloys containing copper and zinc together with a third metal, and the microscopically equivalent binary alloy of copper and zinc, may be expressed mathematically.

Perhaps no other mineral commodity in this volume has as many uses as limestone and dolomite. These carbonate rocks are the basic building blocks of the construction industry, the material from which aggregate, cement, lime, and building stone are made. Carbonate rocks, and their derived products, are used as fluxes, glass raw material, refractories, fillers, abrasives, soil conditioners, ingredients in a host of chemical processes, and much more. Although the use of limestone and dolomite goes back before recorded history, new uses and products are continually being found. Carbonate rocks form about 15% of the earth's sedimentary crust and are widely available for exploitation. Found extensively on all continents, they are quarried and mined from formations that range in age from Precambrian to Recent. Reserves of carbonate rock are large and will last indefinitely, although high-purity deposits may be absent or have limited avail- ability in certain areas. Limestone and dolomite are so useful and so abundant that in 1972 more than 690 million tons were produced in the United States. In fact, about 75% of all stone quarried or mined in the United States was carbonate rock. Sand and gravel was the only mineral commodity produced in greater quantity. In this chapter we have sought to provide the general reader an overview of carbonate rocks, their composition, distribution, production, and uses, with emphasis on developments since 1960. In doing so we borrowed extensively from our recent report on the applied geology of limestone and dolomite (Rooney and Carr, 1971). The literature on the limestone and dolomite resources of the United States and Canada is so vast and diverse that one can easily become mired down in print. We tried to list those references that are easily accessible and that provide the economic geologist with a starting point for more intensive study. The table listing selected references on limestone and dolomite resources in Canada and the United States reflects our attempt to be selective rather than exhaustive and to direct the reader to the best sources of detailed information.

Stripping is the name given to the process of removing clay, rock, or other cover from deposits of coal or ore. In this paper it is intended to cover the methods used in carrying on this operation in the anthracite coal regions of Pennsylvania. In doing this, attention will be chiefly devoted to those methods wherein practice in different sections of the region differs, or is susceptible to change or improvement, though it is intended to give as complete data as possible concerning all stages of the operation. The data from which this paper has been prepared have been collected and submitted by a committee† representing the larger users of stripping methods, of which committee the writer has acted as chairman. Data and assistance have also been obtained from various mining men, engineers, contractors and manufacturers of stripping equipment, to all of whom our appreciation is due. Early History and Statistics The earliest mining operation on a commercial scale in the anthracite region was a stripping operation. This was the famous Quarry mine at Summit Hill, where this method was used only because no other method of mining a deposit of the nature found there seemed feasible to the early operators. A description of this stripping from a report published in 1821 is as follows: "The coal mine at present worked by the company lies on the top of a mountain, and appears to extend over some hundred acres of land covered by about 12 ft,. of loose black dirt resembling moist gunpowder, which can be removed by cattle with scrapers, and thrown into the valley below so as never to impede the work. The thickness of the coal is not known, but a shaft has been sunk in it 35 ft. without penetrating through. More than an acre of mine has been uncovered and presents a huge rock of coal, which is easily quarried without blasting."

IN a recent study1 of the deformation of metastable beta copper-zinc and beta copper-tin crystals, it was established that the parallel markings that appear on the surface of these crystals after slight deformation represent lattice transformations. Stereographic analysis showed that in beta copper-tin, the poles of these markings deviated one or two degrees from poles of the form { 133 } . In beta copper-zinc the plane delineated by the markings corresponded to no one crystallographic plane of the matrix lattice; the marking poles deviated from 5° to 11° from poles of the form {110}, and were displaced only a few degrees from (110) zones. Inasmuch as the new transition lattices produced as the result of the deformation are different for each alloy, it was thought at first that the habits of the markings might be the result of a cooperation between matrix lattice and transformed lattice. (Both matrix lattices are body-centered cubic.) Such a cooperative effect is thought to obtain in the formation of Widmanstätten figures, for it is well known that the matrix lattice alone does not determine the habit assumed by a segregate phase. On the other hand, it is not inconceivable that the dissimilarity in mark-ing habit might be due to differences in deformation characteristics of beta brass and beta bronze. Barrett and co-workers2 have shown that slip-line habits in pure iron are markedly different from those in high-silicon ferrite; and although it has been repeatedly demonstrated that plates of a segregate phase do not necessarily form on the slip planes of the matrix lattice, deformation characteristics may be more intimately allied with plate formation when a transformation is made to occur as a result of plastic deformation. However, there is the fact that the orienta-tion of markings in metastable beta copper-zinc is the same whether the markings be produced by quenching, deformation, or liquid-air cooling; likewise, quenching and deformation markings in metastable beta copper-tin are oriented in the same way with respect to the beta matrix.

Petroleum engineers generally are of the opinion that the flow conditions and, therefore, the formulas that apply to the flow of oil and gas in long pipe lines differ in many ways from flow conditions in oil wells. One of the reasons why the formulas in common use for pipe-line flow do not correctly apply to oil wells is that the flow lines are vertical and not horizontal. Another factor to be considered is that the fluid is a mixture of oil and gas and that the physical characteristics of these two components are affected differently by changing conditions of pressure and temperature during upward flour. Realizing the need for accurate data on flow in vertical pipes under conditions caused both by natural flow and the gas-lift, the U. S: Bureau of Mines has installed equipment at the Petroleum Experiment Station, Bartlesville, Okla., for the purpose of studying this problem. In additon a study will be made of the comparative effects of different natural-flow and gas-lift methods of producing oil on ultimate production from reservoir sands. Experimental Equipment The experimental equipment consists of a regular oil-field steel derrick, a large pressure tank installed in a concrete pit beneath the derrick floor, compressors and pumps, gas separators and absorbers, metering and control devices, and the necessary pipe connections. The crown-block level represents the derrick floor at an oil well, and the "producing sand" is the pressure tank below the derrick floor. The difference in elevation between the crown-block level and the tank is 90 ft. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show the construction and exterior arrangement of the equipment. The success of the experiment will of course depend largely upon the accuracy of the oil and gas measurements and the temperature and pressure determinations. Studies of the eyuilibrzum between ferrite and austenite with gas mixtures (CO + CO2 and H2 + CHe) have been used as a means of deducing the energy and vibrational entropy of carbon atoms in dilute interstitial Fe-C solutions. A simple model for dilute interstitial solutions is given which enables a solubility equation for the equilibrium between the gas mixtures and the solid to be deduced. This solubility equation is used to estimate the partial In this work measurements of the equilibrium between dilute solid solutions of carbon in iron and gaseous mixtures of CO2 + CO and CH4 + Hp have been analyzed using theoretical solubility equations deduced from a knowledge of the thermodynamic parameters of the gas mixtures and an appropriate model for the solid solution. The solubility equations are deduced by equating the chemical potential of carbon atoms in the gas thermodynamic functions of dilute Fe-C solutions from the measured equilibrium between the solid and the gas mixtures. It is shown that the vibra-tional entropy of a carbon atom in a and y iron is smaller than the corresponding entropy 01. a nitrogen atom in solid solution inferrite or austenite and that there is little difference between the vibrational entropies of both nitrogen and carbon atoms in ferrite and austenite. and solid phases. The chemical potential of carbon in the gas is found from a simple statistical mechanical analysis of the gas mixtures utilizing spec-troscopic data while that for carbon in the interstitial solution is found from a model in which the carbon atoms act as bound oscillators distributed in a random fashion in the solution. The work of Leon Guillet concerning the effect of nickel on the structural properties of brass is checked. The best value for the coefficient of equivalence t, that is, the amount of zinc replaced by 1 per cent. of nickel, is shown to be-1.1 per cent. The best hot- and cold-working nickel silvers, varying in nickel content between the limits of 4 and 18 per cent., are tabulated and plotted diagrammatically. Also, some data are given showing a comparison between the physical properties of a hot- and cold-working low copper-nickel silver, and a commercial cold-working nickel silver containing approximately 8 per cent. more copper. THIS investigation of low copper-nickel silvers was undertaken to check the work of Leon Guillet on special brasses and to determine, more accurately, the effect of the addition of nickel on the microstructure of the binary alloys of copper and zinc. It was hoped that the results could be successfully applied to the practical production of low copper-nickel silvers. To explain the results of his investigations on special brasses, Leon Guillet evolved his conception of "fictitious compositions." He states,1 in his general conclusions, that on the introduction of a small amount of a third metal to a copper-zinc alloy, it enters into solid solution with the normal constituents up to saturation, but by so doing it brings the ternary alloy into a state microscopically equivalent to a binary copper-zinc alloy of fictitious composition, and physically more nearly like the latter than the brass containing copper-zinc in the ratio actually present. The physical properties of the ternary alloy, when compared to the same properties of an actual brass of the fictitious composition, are modified by the natural properties of the third element. Beyond the point of saturation, a special constituent appears and the above generalization no longer holds.

KEYES, Des Moines, Iowa (communication to the Secretary*):-It is with pleasure that I acknowledge the value and interest of the historical notes on early mining at Lake Valley, contributed by Messrs. MacDonald and Courtis. In my own paper there was no attempt to enter into this phase of the subject; partly for reason that the intention was to take up this in detail in another connection, partly because there was not space enough to. devote to it in a brief geologic paper, and partly on account of the fact that the strictly mining features are quite distinct from the purely geologic characteristics. As may be inferred from its perusal, the brief historical paragraph prefacing my paper was in reality geologic in its bearing. The events referred to therein relate to the published information concerning the geologic structure. The personages principally mentioned were noted merely to show how the names of several of our most distinguished scientists came to be closely associated with that of Lake Valley. Far from my intentions was it to slight the memory of any , of that brave band who, with lives in their hands, took so active a part in the early development of the mines. The value of their records is perhaps much greater than that of any published notes. The narratives of Messrs. MacDonald and Courtis are as thrilling as many other experiences related of that time and place. Few of us at the present time can appreciate the dangers of that early day, when the fierce Apache all but swept the. white man from that part of the country, when renegades from Texas overran the land, and when the outlaws of the nations took their last stand before advancing civilization.
