THE quantitative study of grain shape in three dimensions has been a difficult one from the practical standpoint. Experiments on grain shape have usually been based on indirect observations of two-dimensional metallographic samples or on grains separated by intergranular corrosion or fracture. The latter method was used in particular by Deschl in 1919 in observing the shapes of ß-brass grains which had been separated with mercury. The similarity in detail of shape and packing that exists between bubbles in a soap froth and metal grains was noted by Desch who remarks that: "Surface tension has an. important share in determining the form of the crystal grains in a solidifying metal and such grains have a tendency to assume the shape of foam cells." More recently the relation between grain shape and grain growth has been studied by Harker and Parker.' The importance of surface tension forces in determining microstructure has been discussed by Smith," and an analysis of the topologi-cal rules that apply to such structures has been made by the same author.' Biologists have made valuable contributions to the general problem of shape and form in an assembly of space-filling cells subject to surface tension forces. Particular mention must be made of the extensive researches of Lewis5,8 on botanical and anatomical tissues, and Matzke and Nestler,7,8 who have made painstaking studies of bubble shapes in different kinds of foam. The present paper introduces a new method of studying individual grains in particular alloys—a method which may well find use in other metallurgical researches, and which seems also to be applicable in biological problems. Metal Grains in Three Dimensions The individual grains in a piece of metal or the bubbles in a soap froth must satisfy two conditions —they must be in juxtaposition so as to fill space and their interfaces must conform to the laws of surface tension. If a further restriction is imposed, namely, that only one type of polyhedron be used, then the sole possibility is an assembly of "minimal" tetrakaidecahedra," each polyhedron having eight doubly-curved hexagonal faces and six plane quadrilateral faces, the angles between adjacent faces being 120". Such cells could be stacked on a body-centered cubic lattice and would be quite stable. For many years it was believed that soap bubbles actually possessed the shape of this ideal body, and the hypothesis was the starting point for several investigations on the shapes of soap bubbles, biological cells, and metal grains. These investigations have shown, what might have been obvious in the beginning, that if the condition of symmetry is relaxed the tetrakaidecahedron is almost never found. If we retain only the rule that all contacts should be in local surface tension equilibrium and that the assembly should fill space, metal grains may then take a nearly infinite variety of shapes and no single one may be regarded as an archetype. These two conditions, which are fully discussed in one of the previously mentioned papers,' lead us to think of a typical grain in an annealed metal as having the following characteristics: 1—A grain may have any number of faces, but usually between nine and eighteen. The faces (each of which is, of course, shared by two grains in the assembly) may have any number of edges, but usually between four and six. Pentagons are by far the most frequent. 2—In the assembly of grains each edge is shared by three faces and by three grains. Each vertex is a point shared by four grains, six faces, and four

The effecl of preferred orienlation on X-vay dzffvaction measurements of retained austenzte was investigated for four precipitation-hardening staznless steels in sheet form. A method is preserzted for estimating the ervor in measurement associated with a given samplirig direction. The method was used to select an "optimum" sampling direclion in order to minimize errors in measurement due to preferred orientation. hleasuremenls of retained austenite content employing lhe proposed sampling direction are conzpaved to measuretnents enzploying the more commonly used normal direclion for a series of sawzples. THE first application of X-ray diffraction to the measurement of retained austenite in steels is due to Sekito, 1 who employed a photographic technique in which the (111) reflection from a thin strip of gold affixed to a cylindrical sample was employed as a standard. Averbach 2 introduced the "direct comparison" method in which the ratios of observed to calculated random intensity are assumed proportional to the austenite and/or martensite contents. Averbach's work forms the basis of most subsequent X-ray diffraction methods for the determination of retained austenite. Subsequent improvements are due to: Averbach and Cohen,3 who employed a sodium chloride crystal to monochromate cobalt radiation; Averbach et a1.,4 who introduced a bent sodium chloride monochromator; Mager,' who used a bent quartz crystal to monochromate chromium radiation ; Littmam, who first used a geiger counter diffractometer for this purpose; Beu and Beu and Koistinen, 11,12 who studied effects of absorption factor, surface preparation, sample geometry, integrated intensity vs peak height, choice of radiation, monochromator, and filter. The possibility of errors in measured values due to orientation effects was noted by Miller,13 who suggested examination of a surface other than the plane of rolling. Lopata and Kula 14 have developed an experimental technique in which the preferred orientation is measured in each sample. They illustrated the method for a sample containing 42 pct retained austenite. Application of their technique to the 1 to 15 pct range typical for the precipitation-hardening stainless steels does not appear feasible. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The nominal compositions of the precipitation-hardening stainless steels investigated are listed in Table I. Ingots were solution-treated, hot-rolled to approximately 0.2 in., and reduced to 0.050 in. by a suc- cession of cold rolling and annealing operations. After this treatment the 17-4PH sample was in the marten-sitic condition, while the 17-7PH, PH 14-8Mo, and PH 15-7Mo samples were in the austenitic condition. Samples of 17-7PH and PH 15-7Mo steels in the mar-tensitic condition were obtained by heating to 1750'F for 10 min and holding at -100°F for 8 hr. A sample of PH 14-8Mo steel in the martensitic condition was obtained by heating to 1700°F for 1 hr and holding at -100°F for 8 hr, followed by aging at 950" for 1 hr. POLE FIGURE DETERMINATIONS Samples were thinned to 0.003 to 0.005 in. by etching in a solution containing 250 ml reagent-grade phosphoric acid (85 to 87 pct H3PO4), 250 ml technical-grade hydrogen peroxide (30 to 35 pct H 2 O 2), and 50 to 100 ml reagent-grade hydrochloric acid (37 to 38 pct HCl). The specimens were placed in an "integrating" sample holder which provided a 1-in. oscillation in the plane of the sample. The diffractometer was aligned to measure the intensity diffracted by planes of the particular {hkl} type being studied. The sample was Set for a given latitude angle, a, measured from the plane of the sheet, and diffracted intensity recorded as the longitude angle, 0, measured in the plane of the sheet from the rolling direction, was increased from 0 to 360 deg. After a 360-deg scan of B, a was incremented by 5 deg, and the process repeated. Random standards obtained by spraying suspensions of powdered iron (bcc structure) and nickel (fcc structure) in lacquer were used to correct observed intensities for absorption and geometrical effects. Zirconium-filtered molybdenum radiation was used to determine the transmission regions of the (111) (0to 45 deg), (200) (0 to 60 deg), and (220) (0 to 45 deg) austenite and (110) (0 to 45 deg), (200) (0 to 50 deg), and (211) (0 to 35 deg) martensite pole figures. The magnetic powder method, long used for roughly mapping magnetic fields, has recently been refined1, "or investigating the microscopic variations in the surface magnetization of ferromagnetic crystals. Bitter2 first discovered regular powder patterns connected with the crystal structure of such specimens. Several other investigators:' have used Bitter's original technique, with slight modifications, to study the variation of the patterns with variations in the magnetizing field applied parallel to the surface, and their dependence upon the state of strain, of polish and of crystal cut. All of the explanations of these patterns on metallic ferromagnetics have been couched in general terms. In a preliminary report we have described an improvement ill the powder technique which led us to the discovery of a new effect throwing considerable light on the magnetic secondary structure of alpha iron4 and of nickel5 single crystals. We now report additional evidence confirming the existence and stability of a magnetic block secondary structure. Specimens The following list describes the specimens used in the present investigation. Designation Description A1 Silicon ferrite furnished to us by Dr. W. E. Ruder, of the General Electric Co., for which lie gave the following typical analysis: C, 0.05; P, 0.038; S, 0.026; Mn, 0.15; Si, 3.24. Disk, 0.60 cm. diameter, about 0.05 cm. thick. The adsorption mechanism of corn starch and its derivatives at mineral-solution interfaces was investigated by the adsorption of cationic starch, unmodified corn starch, British Gum 9084, and anionic starch on quartz and hematite. The adsorption of these starches, which decreases in the order mentioned, is dependent on the balance between the magnitude of the electrostatic interaction and the magnitude of the hydrogen bonding. There exists a critical starch concentration for both optimum flotation and flocculation conditions of iron ores, which corresponds to a point where the starch adsorption reaches a saturation coverage. Flocculation occurs due to the adsorption of starch via electrostatic and hydrogen-bonding forces and by interparticle bridging as a result of the conformation of starch molecules at the interface. The depressant property of starches and starch derivatives in flotation' and their flocculation char: acteristics in clarification and filtration2.3 have long been recognized on a wide variety of ores. The effectiveness of a starch as a depressant for iron minerals has been the subject of much investigation in recent years both in the amine flotation of siliceous gangue and in the anionic flotation of activated silica from iron ores. It has been reported that the depressant activity of starches and dextrins in the cationic flotation of quartz from hematite increases with molecular weight, branching, and number of hydroxyl groups, 1 and that the selectivity is affected by changing the configuration of starch molecules and the composition of its polar groups.4 ,5 The manner in which starches are solubilized was shown to exert a significant influence as a depressant in the anionic silica flotation, and a series of articles covering the practical aspects of flotation and flocculation have already been reported.618 Chemical modification of the starch structure, the pulp pH, the calcium ion, and the residual starch concentration were identified as some of the more important variables affecting the flotation behavior. In the flocculation of iron ores, it was noted that most starches flocculated suspensions of hematite in water but did not flocculate similar suspensions of quartz,9 and that an excessive use of starch restabilized the suspensions due presumably to protective action. 6 An admirable application of such an observation to practice may be cited in the selective flocculation and desliming in the anionic silica flotation of iron ores, which resulted in superior metallurgy and lower reagent cost. 10 From detailed adsorption measurements, Schulz'and Cooke4 established that the adsorption of starches and their derivatives depended on the types of minerals and of starches, pH, and electrolytes present. Their adsorption data and the foregoing flotation and flocculation observations suggested that an electrical interaction between starches and charged mineral surfaces might be playing a role in their adsorption process. Adsorption of organic polymers, particularly of synthetic origin, at solid-liquid interfaces has been extensively studied in recent years,' and it is realized that their adsorption mechanism is considerably more complex than that of simple ions or molecules. A polymer molecule possesses a number of functional groups, and the adsorption at a point may restrict the adsorbability of adjacent groups. The mechanism may be further complicated by the conformation of the polymer molecules which may exist as coiled spheres, helices, or extended chains as a result of intramolecular interactions among functional groups as well as intermolecular interactions with solvent molecules. The object of the present investigation was to examine the effect of the chemical modification on the adsorption characteristics of starches and starch products on quartz and hematite at several pH values, so that by correlating this information with flocculation and flotation results, adsorption mechanism of starches on mineral-solution interface may be elucidated. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS Quartz: St. Peter sand was screened at 35 mesh and the undersize was scrubbed and deslimed at a Fagergren cell. The deslimed sand was cleaned with 0.1 N hot hydrochloric acid and washed repeatedly with distilled water, For anuscript, measurementsl the -200-mesh fraction of the sand was ground dry in a porcelain mill for 3 hr. The purpose of this paper is to present a brief sketch of the development of this hindered-settling classifier, but primarily to show the actual results obtained in practice with the classifier working on the Butte copper ores at the Boston & Montana Concentrator at Great Falls and the Washoe Concentrator at Anaconda. The writer has endeavored to be as brief as possible, giving only the essential figures showing the efficiency of the classifier and leaving considerable interesting information to be derived by the reader from the statistics given. The paper deals with the practical work of the classifier under the following heads: 1. Desliming 4.0-mm. primary feed, overflow from 0.07 to 0.0 mm. 2. Desliming 1.25-mm. secondary feed, overflow from 0.07 to 0.0 mm. 3. Desliming Huntington Mill discharge, overflow from 0.07 to 0.0 mm. 4. Classifying 2.5-mm. deslimed secondary feed, overflow from 1.00 to 0.07 mm. 5. Classifying 2.5-mm. deslimed primary feed, overflow from 0.75 to 0.07 mm. 6. The S.P. log is shown to be a measurement of the potential drop along the drill hole, caused by ohmic effect in the mud. The notion of static S.P. is brought forward, and its relation to the S.P. log is discussed. Other factors influencing the shape and amplitude of the log are considered; attention is given to conditions encountered in practice. Numerous figures are given illustrating graphically the results; these figures are of particular interest for comparison with field examples. The S.P. log, although indicating permeability, is not an absolute measurement of permeability, nor of porosity, of the formations traversed by a drill hole. It is affected by several parameters, such as resistivity of formations and mud, thickness of formations, and others, which should be appraised carefully. Simple rules have been established for a better distinction of the boundaries of permeabl: sections, particularly in difficult cases, such as those encountered in highly resistive formations. A systematic application of the established principles will assist in obtaining more information from the S.P. log than was possible thus far; for instance, under favorable conditions, presence of oil may be detected, or amount of shale in sands may be estimated. Introduction The S.P. log, or spontaneous potential log, has been known and widely used during the last 15 years for the location of permeable beds traversed by drill holes.1,2 In electrical logging practice, the S.P. log is shown on the left hand side track of the record (as may be seen in later examples) where it can be easily correlated and interpreted with the resistivity curves located to the right. Usually, the S.P. log consists of a base line, more or less straight, having excursions or "peaks" to the left. The base line frequently has been found to correspond to impervious beds, while the peaks are usually found opposite permeable strata. Measurements which will indicate positively the presence of permeability in the formations, and which will give accurately the boundaries of the permeable zones, are of great importance in oil-field practice. Thus far, the S.P. log is the best approach to such determinations; unfortunately, its interpretation is not always evident. With respect to the base line of the S.P. log, it may be noticed that this line is not always at a definite location on the chart. Sometimes it may shift abruptly, while other times a gradual drift is apparent. As far as the peaks are concerned, their shape is not uniform; some are rounded while others are sharp. Also, from other data, it may be found that occasionally the peaks extend appreciably beyond the boundaries of permeable zones into zones which are not everywhere permeable. A comparison with permeability measurements made on cores has often confirmed that there was no definite correspondence between the magnitudes of the peaks and the permeability values. ALTHOUGH it was known some years ago at the- Utah Copper Co. mills that fine grinding improved flotation recoveries, no accurate data were available until recently as to just how far the grinding could be carried economically. In 1923 the ultimate degree of fineness for flotation feed was supposed to be about 10 per cent. on 65 mesh, with approximately 55 per cent. through 200 mesh, which meant that most of the mineral would pass 100 mesh. At this time Garfield and Wilfley tables were used ahead of flotation and a good deal of the coarse mineral removed prior to the ball mill regrind. Shortly afterwards, mill-scale tests developed the fact that on a feed containing not over 10 per cent. +65¬mesh material flotation alone would give a copper recovery equal to that obtained by the combination of tables and flotation, but that on much coarser feed the recovery with flotation alone was lowered. This was at a time when all the sulfide minerals were floated if possible, so that the only requisite was to grind fine enough to free the mineral from gangue. EARLIEST USE op MICROSCOPIC EXAMINATION OF TAILINGS As early as 1921, the writer had attempted to determine by chemical analysis the relative proportions of copper minerals in tailings from an ore that made extremely poor flotation results. Chemical analysis was not satisfactory or conclusive, and samples of these tailings were sent to the U. S. Bureau of Mines Station at the University of Utah for micro-scopic examination. The question at that time was to determine, if possible, which copper minerals had been lost and why, but R. E. Head, in his report, revealed other interesting data. He said in part: Briefly stated, the mineral particles or grains may be classified into separate groups as follows: 1. Free grains of pyrite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite, respectively, which contain no other included sulfides; 2. Grains in which all three of the copper sulfides are represented (the core may he of chalcopyrite, partially altered to bornite, these two minerals being entirely surrounded by a shell of chalcocite); 3. Grains composed of equal amounts of bornite and chalcocite or chalcopyrite and chalcocite.

This report presents developments of fundamental equations for describing the flow and thermodynamic behavior of two-phase single-component fluids moving under steady conditions through porous media. Many of the theoretical considerations upon which these equations are premised have received little or no attention in oil-reservoir fluid-flow research. The significance of the underlying flow theory in oil-producing operations is indicated. In particular, the theoretical analysis pertains to the steady, adiabatic, macroscopically linear, two-phase flow of a single-component fluid through a horizontal column of porous medium. It is considered that the test fluid enters the upstream end of the column while entirely in the liquid state, moves downstream an appreciable distance, begins to vaporize, and then moves through the remainder of the column as a gas-liquid mixture. The problem posed is to find the total weight rate of flow and the pressure distribution along the column for a given inlet pressure and temperature, a given exit pres5ure or temperature and given characteristics of the test fluid and porous medium. In developing the theory, gas-liquid interfacial phenomena are treated. phase equilibrium is assumed and previous theoretical work of other investigators of the problem is modified. Laboratory experiments performed with specially designed apparatus. in which propane is used as the test fluid, substantiate the theory. The apparatus. materials and experimental procedure are described. Comparative experimental and theoretical results are presented and discussed. It is believed that the research findings contributed in this * paper should not only lead to a better understanding of oil-reservoir behavior, but also should be suggective in regard to future research in this field of study. INTRODUCTION In recent years much time and effort has been consumed in both theoretical and experimental studies of the static and . dvnamic behavior of oil-reservoir fluids in porous rocks. Although lack of sufficient basic oil-field data, principally concerning the properties and characteristics of reservoir rocks and fluids, largely precludes quantitative application of research results to oil-field problems, qualitative application has become common practice. In effect. oil-reservoir engineering research is serving as a firm foundation for oil-field development and production practices leading to increased economic recoveries of petroleum. This province of research. however, still poses many perplexing problems. The thermodynamic behavior of two-phase fluids moving through porous media constitutes one facet of reservoir-fluid-flow research that has not received the attention it deserves. This report embodies a theoretical discussion of this subject and a description of a series of related laboratory experiments. The significance of the problem to oil field operations is indicated but in articular the report centers around a theory and method for analyzing the steady. macroscopically linear, two-phase flow of a fluid (a single molecular species) through a horizontal column of porous medium. For simplicity in showing how the thermodynamic behavior of two-phase fluids moving through porous media affects oil-reservoir performance problems, attention is focused temporarily on a particular well producing petroleum from an idealized water-free solution-gas drive reservoir, the reservoir rock being a horizontal, thin, fairly homogeneous sandstone of large areal extent confined between two impermeable strata. The flowing hydrocarbon fluid is considered to exist entirely as a Iiquid at points in the reservoir remote from the well; however. the decline in fluid pressure in the direction of the well causes vaporization of the hydrocarbon to begin at a radial distance r from the well. Upstream from r the fluid moves entirely as a liquid and downstream from r it moves either entirely as a gas or as a gas-liquid mixture depending on the properties of the hydrocarbon and on the thermodynamic process it follows during flow. The distance r would be variable under transient flow conditions. but for purposes of analysis the flow is considered to l~e steady at the particular instant of observation during the flowing life of the well of interest. If the flow were isothermal and the hydrocarbon a pure substance, the fluid would be entirely gaseous downstream from r. Thus, this isothermal flow process for a pure substance would require that the heat of vaporization be supplied at r. over zero length of porous medium, at the precise rate necessary to maintain the constant temperature. This means that the solid matrix of the porous medium (reservoir rock) and the surroundings (impermeable strata confining the reservoir rock) would have to serve as infinite heat sources. Heat-transfer requirements would be somewhat less severe for the isothermal flow of a multicorn-ponent hydrocarbon as bubble and dew points at the same temperature correspond to different pressures. In this instance isothermal conditions would be sustained without complete vaporization of the fluid over zero length of porous medium. Nevertheless. as the flow is in the direction of decreasing

Asbestos is the generic name given to a group of fibrous mineral silicates found in nature. They are all incombustible and can be separated by mechanical means into fibers of various lengths and cross sections, but each differs in chemical composition from the others. The commercial grades of asbestos consist of a spectrum of lengths and sizes and are not definitive as are most organic fibers. It is generally recognized that there are two main groups of asbestos. The first only contains the fibrous serpentine called chrysotile and comprises about 94% of the world production of asbestos. The second group contains five minerals in the amphibole series+rocidolite, amosite, anthophyllite, tremolite, and actinolite. The latter two have no commercial importance. Properties Physical The structures of asbestos fibers have been studied intensively over a number of years. X-ray diffraction patterns have been used as a means of identification and classification. Low angle X-ray scattering techniques have shown that chrysotile fibers are "hexagonally close packed" and parallel to each other, having cross-sectional diameters varying from 18014 to 300A units, while the amphibole fibers are many times larger in cross section. Electron micrographs of the more common types of as- bestos are shown in [Figs. 1-4]. [Fig. 1] illustrates the softness and flexibility of chrysotile which make it suitable for textile-type products. For a number of years there was considerable controversy over the exact nature of chrysotile fiber, but the photographic evidence in [Figs. 5-7] clearly show that it is tubular in structure. The curvature is the result of the mismatch in the dimensions of the silica [Si,O,l and brucite [Mg(OH),] layers which are on the inside and outside, respectively, of a double sheet. This curvature had been predicted by Pauling (1930) years ago based on the molecular dimensions of the two component structures.

The estimation of the magnitude of pressure changes which occur in mine ventilation circuits is of primary importance to the mining engineer in making changes in an existing mine or in projecting the ventilation requirements of a new mine. It is a formidable task in many cases, because no adequate theory is available and empirical data are unreliable or even lacking. The common practice of increasing one's estimate of the mine static pressure by an arbitrary "safety factor" to compensate for the unknown is a poor substitute for accuracy. Generally little difficulty is encountered in calculating friction losses in mine airways. As long as the friction factor can be reliably estimated, the well-known Atkinson formula gives accurate results. However, it is in the determination of shock losses that the ventilation engineer encounters difficulty and is apt to resort to an arbitrary allowance. Shock losses may constitute as little as five or as much as twenty-five percent or more of the overall pressure drop in the mine, and such allowances are generally completely unsatisfactory. Since other shock losses have been covered by McElroy (1), this paper deals with a long-neglected source of shock and pressure change in ventilation circuits, divergence and convergence of airflows, here referred to by their more common mining terms, splits and junctions. PREVIOUS WORK There is practically no fundamental information available in ventilation literature on the splitting and junction of airflows, either in mining or mechanical engineering periodicals or handbooks. Fluid mechanics textbooks seemingly avoid the subject of divergence and convergence, except for brief empirical treatment. The only investigation reported for mine ventilation systems was by Weeks, et a1 (21), in 1933. Although applicable to the case of line brattices in coal mines, it cannot be applied to the general case of mine splitting and junctions involving change of direction with little or no area change. In dealing briefly with the subject of shock losses at splits and junctions, McElroy (1) suggests only that they be considered comparable to bends, with losses at junctions being increased 50 pct to allow for interference of merging streams. He recognizes the importance of quantity ratio but concludes that exact quantitative data are lacking to compute losses at splits and junctions. A very capable summary and analysis of the state of knowledge in industrial ventilation and fluid mechanics regarding losses due to divergence has recently been reported by Gilman (3). In considering all earlier work dealing with both air and water as fluids, he compares results on a common basis and obtains good empirical agreement. For divergent flow, the controlling variable in each branch is the quantity ratio, although the deflection angle is of secondary importance. Empirical equations are presented for straight and 90-deg branches with varying velocity ratios, assuming branches smaller than the main duct. These formulas are modifications of the Borda equation for abrupt contraction and expansion. The only information available on shock losses in convergent flow are approximate experimental data presented by Alden (4) and the Manual of Recommended Practice for Industrial Ventilation of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. Alden considers the effects of both quantity ratio and deflection angle. The data indicate an effect opposite to that observed in divergence, the shock loss varying directly with quantity ratio. SHOCK LOSS THEORY Because pressure losses due to shock have been found to bear a constant relation to the mean velocity of flow in a given conduit, they are frequently expressed as a dimensionless function of the velocity head, termed the shock loss factor. AN incomplete phase diagram for the U-Ti systern was determined earlier 1 and more recently, a tentative diagram was presented for the uranium-rich end of the system.' In the present re-examination of the whole system of U-Ti alloys, high purity materials were used. Melting stock for the alloys was high purity uranium, containing about 0.09 pct C as the only appreciable impurity, and high purity iodide-process titanium purchased from New Jersey Zinc Co. Both metals were cold rolled to about 1/6 in. thickness, sheared to about I/' in. squares, and cleaned by pickling. The alloys were arc melted under a helium atmosphere in a water-cooled copper crucible. A thoriated-tungsten electrode was used. The furnace chamber was evacuated, then flushed with helium, prior to each melting. It was finally filled with stagnant helium at one atmosphere pressure. Each alloy was remelted three times after the original melting, to insure homogeneity. The alloy button was turned bottom side up before each re-melting operation. Some 22 alloys were examined. Their compositions were spaced at appropriate intervals between 100 pct Ti and 100 pct U. Analyses were made on chips taken after fabrication. The major contaminant was carbon, which varied from 0.03 to 0.08 pct. It appeared in the microstructure as titanium carbide. Alloy compositions were calculated to a carbon-free basis for consideration on the diagram. Tungsten and copper, possible contaminants from the melting operation, were generally less than 100 parts per million each. Fabrication All alloys were forged and rolled to bars approximately V8 in. square. They were clad either in SAE 1020 steel or in a 5 pct Cr-3 pct Al-Ti-base alloy, depending on the fabrication temperature. A temperature of 1800°F (980°C) was used for alloys near the compound composition. This necessitated using the titanium-base alloy, since iron reacts with titanium at this temperature, producing a low melting alloy. Other alloys were fabricated at 1450°F (790°C), using steel jackets. No iron-titanium reaction occurred at this temperature. The jackets were welded in place in an argon atmosphere. Those alloys sheathed in steel were declad and then reclad between rolling and forging operations. On the other hand, those clad with the titanium alloy were cut to a roughly rectangular shape prior to clading and were then carried through both the forging and rolling operations without opening. Those alloys near the compound composition were found to be cracked when the clading was removed. The cracked materials had been plastically deformed, however, and at least some of the cracking had OCcurred during cooling. Heat Treatment The rolled bars, after being declad and shaped to remove surface contamination, were all given an homogenizing treatment of 160 hr at 2000°F. (Samples were taken for analysis following the declading and shaping operations.) All were heat treated at the same time in one furnace, but each was sealed in a purified argon atmosphere in an individual Vycor glass tube. Argon pressure was such that it was approximately atmospheric at temperature. One end of each tube contained titanium chips and this end was heated to 1200°F (650°C) for 10 min prior to the heat treatment. This purged the atmosphere of residual reactive gases. The balance of the tube was warmed during the purge to liberate adsorbed moisture and gases, which also reacted with the hot chips. The bars were furnace cooled from the homogenization treatment. Specimens of each alloy were water quenched after 2 hr heating at 1000°, 1200°, 1400°, 1600°, 1800°, and 2000°F (540°, 650°, 760°, 870°, 980°, and 1095°C). In addition, some were treated at intermediate temperatures of 1300°, 1500°, and 1700°F (705", 815", and 925°C) and at 2150°F (1175°C). Specimens, about '/s in. cubes, were cut from the bars, sealed in individual Vycor tubes, and heat treated as described. All specimens heat treated at the same temperature were processed together. Samples were quenched by breaking the Vycor tube rapidly under water. Metallographic Examination Specimens were mounted in bakelite and ground wet on 180 grit paper held on a 1750 rpm disk. They were then ground wet by hand, using 240, 400, and 600 grit papers. The rough grinding was continued long enough to get well below the surface. Specimens were mounted separately because of the variation in the rate of etching between alloys. The specimens were polished with rouge on a 4 in., 1725 rpm wheel covered with Miracloth. Alloys on the titanium side of the compound composition were etched with a solution of 2 pct hydrofluoric acid in water saturated with oxalic acid. A few crystals of ferric nitrate were added as a bright -ener. Specimens were immersed 5 sec, polished to remove the etch, then re-etched. With the higher titanium alloys, it was often necessary to start the etch on the polishing wheel, because of the formation of a passive film. In some instances, a plain 2 pct hydrofluoric etch was satisfactory. For the alloys on the uranium side of the compound, a distinction between the compound and the uranium phase developed after standing a short time in air. This could be hastened by the application of heat, such as obtained by placing the specimen on a radiator. A deep etch was necessary to develop details in the uranium-rich phase, such as the Widmanstaetten pattern sometimes obtained by quenching y uranium. A 2 pct hydrofluoric acid solution was used for this deep etching.

Camp and sample-site methods useful for determining about 0.5 to 16 ppm of mercury in soils and rocks have been devised to complement the analytical methods already widely used in geochemical prospecting. In the camp-site procedure the sample solution is obtained by digesting the finely powdered sample with hot nine-molar sulfuric acid and bromine, the latter generated in place. The solution is buffered at a pH of 4 and the mercury is extracted into a relatively small volume of an organic solvent. Estimations are made by comparing the color of the mercuric dithizonate extracted from the sample with that extracted from a standard. In the sample-site method the mercury is volatilized as the iodide and the latter is dissolved in a buffer solution from which the mercury dithizonate is extracted as in the camp-site method. The estimation is made by a similar comparison with standards or by comparing the color of the mercuric dithizonate with artificial standards prepared from Orange II, an azo dye. Except for the establishment of standards, the time required by an experienced analyst seldom exceeds 10 min for a camp-site determination and 5 min for a sample-site determination. Camp-site determinations are useful for commodity studies and intensive exploration programs; sample-site determinations are applicable to extensive and reconnaissance-type geochemical prospecting programs. The results obtained on samples taken along traverses above known mercury ore deposits in the California Coast Range and western Nevada demonstrate the usefulness of both methods in geochemical prospecting. The increasing use of the mercury content of soils, rocks, plants, or water in geochemical prospecting emphasizes the need for analytical methods which are sensitive and at the same time require a minimum of readily available equipment. Sensitive methods based on the absorption of ultraviolet light by mercury vapor are common in the literature31 12. Although none of these methods have been used to analyze the large number of samples required in geochemical prospecting, they could be extremely useful except for the expensive instrumentation usually required to make the methods quantitative Also, such methods are perhaps too sensitive for field use, especially around areas of possible contamination. Other methods involve the distillation of mercury from a relatively large sample and subsequent collection of the vapors in nitric acid6. The mercury is then estimated by titration with a suitable reagent such as thiocyanate. These methods are not trace methods because the actual amount of mercury measured is often as great as 50 to 100 milligrams. Also, such methods are unsuitable for geochemical prospecting because of the amount of equipment necessary and the time required. Still other methods involve colorimetry, and the sensitive reaction between dithizone and mercury (11).. is the basis for a number of reports on the determination of mercury in biological materials 5,7. Moreover, by the judicious use of solvent extraction and suitable complexing agents, the dithiaone method can be made almost specific for mercury. The object of this investigation was to determine the distribution of chemical elements within a large, killed alloy-steel ingot, by sulphur printing and quantitative chemical analysis. With regard to segregation in steel ingots, the factors of melting practice, pouring temperatures, mold design, etc., and the mechanics of solidification and its attendant functions, have been the subject of intensive study over a period of years by many investigators. Notable among these is the Sub-committee of the No. 5 Committee of the British Iron and Steel Institute. For an exposition of the many problems awaiting the researcher on the heterogeneity of steel ingots, the methods of attacking these problems, together with some of the answers, the reader is referred to the nine reports and numerous papers of that committee and its membership. Steelmaking Data Melt.—The heat was made in a 70-ton direct arc-type basic electric furnace. Furnace charge consisted of nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel, most of it in the form of heavy mill scrap. All of the scrap was charged cold. The standard double-slag method was employed, the heat being finished under a strong carbide slag. Aluminum was used as the deoxidizing agent. Tapping tempera- ture, as observed with an optical pyrometer, was 3000°F. Detail of Mold and Ingot Size.—Details of the ingot mold and the ingot itself are given in Fig. I. Teeming.—Teeming temperature of the subject ingot as observed with an optical pyrometer was 2830°F. The ingot was top-poured directly through a 1 1/2-in. nozzle and required 7 min., 44 sec. to fill up to the hot top. An additional 2 min., 30 sec. were required to fill the hot top. The ingot was stripped hot and charged with the remainder of the heat into an annealing furnace. There it was given the standard annealing cycle used for these ingots. Subsequent heat-treatments are described elsewhere in this paper. Sectioning and Preparation for Sulphur Printing Because of previous favorable experience in sectioning ingots up to 21 1/2 in. square with an oxyacetylene torch, it was decided to use this method to section the subject ingot. The ingot was preheated to 900°F. for 12 hr. It was then placed on a steel bed in a horizontal position so that the longitudinal axis was level and parallel to the track of the motor-driven torch carrier. Two cuts were made, one 2 in. above the longitudinal axis and the other 2 in. below. The time required to make each cut was approximately 75 min. The cutting operation is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The 4-in. thick slab was mmediately charged into a furnace standing at 1200F.

In order to determine the usefulness of geochemical and biogeochemical prospecting for nickel, ten localities representing several types of nickel occurrences were selected as sites from which to collect plant and soil samples. This report covers the investigations in two of the areas. After a brief geologic description of the areas, the author presents details of the experimental tests and resulting data. Conclusions drawn from the studies led to several general guides for further prospecting. In a study of the usefulness of geochemical and biogeochemical prospecting for nickel made about three years ago, approximately ten localities, representing several different types of nickel occurrences, were sampled and about 1500 samples of plant and soil were collected. This report will cover briefly the data and results for two areas, and a summary of guides for prospecting. DESCRIPTION OF AREAS SAMPLED One locality is the Red Flats nickel prospect in Curry County, Ore., about six miles southeast of Goldbeach, and the other is the Little Rocky Creek prospect in Stillwater County, southcentral Montana, just southeast of the Benbow chromite mine. The Oregon area is a lateritic-type nickel deposit formed on a nickel-rich serpentinite peridotite complex, similar to the Josephine intrusion in southwestern Oregon. The Montana area is a nickel prospect in norite, peridotite, and related rocks of the Stillwater igneous complex. The Stillwater complex is a series of layered basic and ultrabasic rocks, with a layer of norite-gabbro at the base and a series of peridotites and gabbros above. The nickel in the Oregon deposit occurs in both the peridotite and the overlying soil. A deep lateritic soil is developed locally on the peridotite and serpentinite and constitutes the ore. The average nickel content of the lateritic soil is less than 1 pct, whereas the nickel content of the weathered peridotite is about 1 to 1.5 pct. The nickel occurs as garnierite (Mg, Fe, Ni, Mn)3 (OH)4 (SiA1)2O5 in the soil and in the olivine and pyroxene in the peridotite where it probably substitutes for Fe2+ or Mg2+ in the silicate lattices. Nickel is found in three distinct ways in the Still-water rocks: 1) it is in the olivine and pyroxene minerals in norite, harzburgite, etc.; 2) it occurs as widely disseminated grains of pentlandite-pyr-rhotite, which tend to be concentrated in the lower norite band; and 3) it occurs as discrete bodies of pentlandite-pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite which are localized in the norite zone, close to the contact with the underlying rocks. The nickel content of the norite is probably less than 1 pct, and the nickel content of the pods and lenses within the norite is about 1 pct. PROSPECTING APPROACH Although the areas are different geologically, the approach in prospecting them is fundamentally the same. The procedure is twofold: 1) a rapid reconnaissance survey to outline an area of high nickel content, and 2) a more detailed survey to outline zones of possible ore grade within the area of high nickel. The possible ore at Red Flats is concentrated in the lateritic soil, whereas at Little Rocky Creek it is in the sulfide pods. Both types are surrounded by an area of relatively high nickel content. CHEMICAL ANALYSIS Chemical analyses of nickel were made by a di-methylglyoxime colorimetric test, similar to the standard test for nickel, utilizing concentrated sul-furic acid for extraction. The lower limit of detection for nickel in soil by the method used was about 10 ppm and for nickel in plants about 5 ppm. The relative deviation was about 25 pct. SOIL PROSPECTING General Statements: A summary of the approximate average parts per million of nickel in soil, as compiled from the literature and from my study, is given in Table I. Selected references are given at the end of the paper. Few of the investigators reported the type of extraction or analysis, so the data given may not be strictly comparable to mine, which were made with a sulfuric acid extraction. Any nickel concentration greater than these average values might be considered anomalous, although each area must be studied in relation to the surrounding rocks. Method of Soil Sampling: The soil samples were taken in a zone from 1 in. to 1 ft below the humus layer, and within a 15-ft radius around a station.

The following is not offered as an extended paper on the subject of shaft sinking, but more as a description of the present practice of shaft sinking in the Butte district. The Anaconda company is sinking at present the following shafts: Badger State, Moose, Mountain Consolidated, Mountain View, Pennsylvania and Tropic. At the High Ore and Leonard mines the shafts are being deepened by sinking two compartments and will subsequently be enlarged to the full working size by raising alongside the compartments which are now being sunk. The following other companies are also sinking shafts: Butte-Alex Scott, Butte and Zenith City, Boston and Corbin, North Butte Mining Co. (at the Granite Mountain shaft), East Butte Co. (at the Pittsmont shaft), and the Rainbow Lode Development Co. Shaft Timbering. The shafts of the Butte district, generally speaking, are of three compartments arranged in a straight line, and the pump compartment is usually arranged for the use of an auxiliary hoisting cage, as well as for carrying pipe lines and electric wires. The Rainbow shaft is practically square, and of three compartments. The length of the shafts outside of timber will vary from 17 to 22 ft., and the width from 6 ft. 6 in. to 7 ft. Fir timber is used in all shaft work. This may be obtained from the Coast, when it is known as Coast fir, or from Idaho or Montana, when it is known as native fir. The native fir seems to be the tougher wood, but it is hard to obtain clear lumber in the lengths and sizes necessary for shaft work. Some of the shaft timber of the Anaconda company has been treated with creosote as a preservative, but this practice has not come into general use, as the ground of the camp is so heavy that the timbers usually crush before they rot. The size of timber most used for shaft work is 12 by 12 in., while 10 by 12 in., 10 by 14 in. and 12 by 14 in. are used for some of the special pieces around the shaft. The new Leonard shaft is timbered with 14 by 14 in. wall plates throughout.

The subject of Egypt, to use the words of perhaps the second of modern writers on the subject [Deodat. de Dolomieu, in Observations sur la Physique, etc., January, 1793, vol. xlii., pp. 41+, 108+; Abbe Rozier, J. A. Mongez, and J. C. Delametherie, Paris], is one which strongly excites our interest, and everything relating to it demands our respect. "Thus," he continues, "the Greeks appeared to the Romans," ..." thus Egypt appeared to the Greeks, and thus all three appear to us." This writer, in the three parts of the memoire given above, speaks of Norden as the modern pioneer of Egypt, and does not seem to have made original observations himself; nevertheless he seems to have rendered the same service to his authority that Playfair not very long afterward rendered Hutton. The limitations of a paper will permit little else than citations, but these are so numerous that, unless much compressed, they would supply a chapter of moderate size. Experiments were conducted to determine the quantity and purity of ultraclean anthracite that could be prepared in the laboratory, using conventional separating techniques. A low, a medium, and a high-volatile anthracite were studied. Specific gravity separation followed by grinding, screening, and refloating at lighter specific gravities yielded small quantities of material purified to 1.0% ash, as follows: from low-volatile anthracite, 0.7%; from medium-volatile coal, 1.0%; and from high-volatile coal, 2.3%. The reduction in ash had no appreciable effect on the volatile matter or sulfur content of the coal. The limited quantities of material containing 1.0% or less ash obtainable indicate that if ultraclean coal is desired, a practical approach should include the processing units as an integral part of a convc.ntiona1 dense-media washing plant. Anthracite preparation practices during much of the industry's history were geared to maximum recovery of the larger sizes, pea through egg, which were used in hand-fired, domestic furnaces. Those sizes were cleaned to meet trade requirements, and the smaller sizes were usually higher in ash content. The impression, thus, was that ash content of anthracite always increased as the sizes got smaller. It was presumed that it was impossible to wash the finer sizes to extremely low ash contents. Following World War 11, the classical domestic market began to decline and the finer sizes assumed an increasingly large share of the market. For example, in 1949l 61% of the production was still pea and larger. Fig. l2 shows that -by 1955 these sizes accounted for only 50%, and in 1965, they were only 39% of the total anthracite produced. With the reduction in the market, increased quality was demanded, especially in export markets, and an increasing number of dense-media magnetite washers were installed in new and existing cleaning plants. In 1965, the coarse coal prepared at 59 breakers in the anthracite fields was sampled by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM); approximately 50% of these plants were equipped with dense-media magnetite washers.3 Since 1950, more attention has been focused on the use of finer sizes for numerous industrial uses, including iron-ore sintering, pelletizing, foundry coke-making, cement manufacture, production of calcium carbide, and of carbon electrodes, etc. Most industrial uses require relatively clean anthracite, such as 10 to 11% ash for sintering and foundry coke, 7% for aluminum melting-pot cathode carbon, and 5% for carbide production. Hence, cleaning methods have been improved to the extent that dense-media washers, hydraulic cyclones, and flotation cells have been introduced as fine-coal-cleaning devices. It is now possible to wash the buckwheat, rice, and barley sizes (9116 X 3132-in.) to ash contents as low as 8 to 10% in dense-media devices, but washing the -3132-in. sizes to those limits presents more difficult problems, due mainly to the fineness of the material. This USBM investigation was conducted to determine the amount and purity of ultraclean anthracite that could be prepared in the laboratory, using conventional separating techniques. The goal was to reduce the ash content to a level acceptable for industrial carbon uses, including electrode manufacture, which generally requires an ash content of 1% or less. While low-ash content is of primary importance in selecting industrial carbons, the amounts of other constituents are also important, including iron, silicon, titanium, nickel, vanadium, and sulfur. They were not considered in this work, since their occurrence in deashed anthracite has been studied elsewhere.4 The results of the present investigation were used to design a flowsheet, suggesting a method for producing ultraclean anthracite as part of conventional preparation practice, using dense-media vessels, crushers, pulverizers,

Calculations are presented for the design of a silicon photodiode in which the incident light beam makes multiple passes between the detector surfaces. Total internal reflection is used for this "light-trapping" effect. By this means, the optical path length can be extended to several millimeters, while the electrode separation remains less than 102 cm, as required for nanosecond response time. Data are presented for a Schottky barrier photodiode constructed on a multiply reflecting silicon base wafer. It is shown that the long-wavelength response is considerably extended in such structures without a corresponding sacrifice in high-speed response. The development of efficient and powerful lasers at 1.06 p has stimulated interest in detectors which operate at this wavelength. In typical silicon photodiodes, for detecting 1.06 p radiation, the requirements for high speed and high sensitivity are mutually exclusive. Since the absorption coefficient is only 25 cm-', a lo-'-cm path length is required to absorb 92 pct of the incident 1.06 p radiation. If the electrode separation is greater than 10 cm, however, the carrier transit time will be greater than 1 nsec. This problem can be solved by allowing the incident light beam to make multiple passes between the electrodes. The optical path length can then be extended to several millimeters, as required for complete absorption, while the electrode separation remains less than 10' cm, as required for nanosecond response time. In a typical photodiode geometry, one ohmic contact and one rectifying contact are formed on the two opposite surfaces of a base wafer, and the wafer thickness determines the electrode separation. The objective of the multiple reflection design is to allow all 1.06 p radiation to enter the detector front surface and to form the back detector surface so that no 1.06 radiation can exit. Total internal reflection at the back detector surface is well-suited for light trapping of 1.06 p radiation because the relatively large dielectric constant of silicon leads to a critical angle of 16.5 deg for total internal reflection. LIGHT TRAPPING It is well-known that, as light passes from one medium such as air into another medium such as glass or silicon, the angle of refraction is always less than the angle of incidence. In the limiting case, where the incident rays approach an angle of 90 deg with the normal, the refracted rays approach a fixed angle +, beyond which no refraction is possible: this is called the critical angle. It follows from Snell's law that where = critical angle, n - index of refraction of air, n' - index of refraction of the medium. Applying the principle of reversibility of light rays, all internal angles of incidence greater than +, will produce total internal reflection and "light trapping". The index of refraction of silicon at 1.06 p is 3.5,' and the critical angle is thus 16.5 deg. Fig. 1 shows these relationships for silicon. This very small critical angle in silicon is significant because all incident angles between 16.5 and 90 deg will produce total internal reflection and "light trapping". This effect can be implemented with a "prismlike" geometry, so that incident light can be introduced into the sample without loss and "trapped". PHOTOSIGNALS A precise knowledge of the absorption coefficient at 1.06 in silicon is of critical importance to the design of fast and efficient silicon photodiodes for 1.06 radiation. Dash and newman2 show a value of 25 cm-l, and our measurements have corroborated this value. Assuming that the collection of photoinduced minority carriers is perfect, the quantum efficiency of a photodiode is dependent only on the absorption coefficient. It then follows from Lambert's law that where QE is the quantum efficiency in pct, a is the absorption coefficient, d is the optical path length, and the reflectivity at the surface is assumed to be completely suppressed by an optical interference layer. Fig. 2 gives the maximum quantum efficiency for 1.06p radiation of a silicon photodiode with optical path length d, using Eq. [2]. The ultimate response time of a fully depleted photodiode to an incident light pulse can be considered to be the arrival times of all photoinduced carriers at the contacts, i.e., the minority carriers at the junction interface and the majority carriers at the oppo-

Any city dweller who has walked alone along a remote mine passageway has to be impressed by the eerie silence-the total absence of noise except for one's own breathing and scuffing of boots on the bottom. An underpound mine can have tremendous contrasts, from complete silence to the ear piercing clatter of percussion drills working in the mine roof. Noise in underground mining machines is both useful and detrimental. Without characteristic noises that are recognizable to miners, operators would have a more difficult job operating their machines. Noise serves as a warning of approaching machinery, and changes in noise give indication that breakdowns may occur. But excessive noise is a health hazard. In recognition of this fact, our congress included noise exposure as a part of the "Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969." As [Fig. 1] indicates, allowable noise exposure is established by specifying a time duration permitted at different noise levels. This is the well known "Walsh-Healey" criteria which govern noise exposure in many industries. In most industries noise exposure is not a constant value. Noise emitted from coal mining machinery varies widely, and therefore interpretation of compliance is not a simple matter. Time, environment, instrumentation and machine productivity, as well as the designed machine characteristics affect the results. It is the purpose of this paper to present the underground coal face machinery noise problem from a manufacturer's point of view. Manufacturers are very much aware of their responsibility to alleviate the noise problem. Not infrequently, orders are received from coal operators that a given new machine must comply with "The Coal Mine Health & Safety Act" noise regulations. Such a request is indicative of the misunderstanding which exists with machine users, while indicating their desire to comply with the law. Obviously, if all machinery could be designed and used at some arbitrary low noise level, it would be possible to simplify the regulations. However, there still remains the pervasive problem of existing machines. Extensive investigation to create practical retrofit kits for existing machines, to substantially reduce noise have been only marginally successful. Certain machine mechanisms are inherent noise makers. The only really good solution is to substitute a quieter mechanism. Such overall new designs have been undertaken, and several examples are mentioned later in this paper. Before describing machine noise problems, it is necessary to define noise values. Noise levels are measured in decibels. The designation "DBA" is decibels measured on the "A" scale, or one in which the frequency sensitivity of the instrumentation is about the same as the human ear. The numbers are often misinterpreted because it is a logarithmic, rather than an arithmetic scale. In comprehending the numbers, it should be remembered that any increase of 3 dB doubles the sound power. In practical terms this means that two noises of equal power at the same distance away increases a dB reading by three.
