Desulphurization of liquid iron by reducing slags of the electric-furnace type was studied from 65 heats. Variations were made in basicity over a wide range and in FeO up to about 5 pct for their effects on desulphurization. The role of FeO in desulphurization from the blast furnace, to the electric furnace, to the oxidizing conditions of the open hearth is shown to fit a relatively simple pattern of behavior. THE mechanism which controls the desulphurization of molten iron by basic slags has been the object of several investigations. In particular, equilibrium determinations have been made both in the field of basic open-hearth slags, which have a high iron-oxide concentration, and in the field of blast-furnace slags which have a very low iron-oxide concentration. In both cases the desulphurization ratio has been found to increase with increasing basicity of the slags; however, the mechanism of desulphurization differs in the two cases. In basic open-hearth slags desulphurization occurs mainly as a partition of iron sulphide:&apos; FeS * (FeS) and the desulphurization ratio is approximately independent of iron-oxide concentration in the slag. In blast-furnace slags the concentration of iron oxide is very low as a result of the highly reducing conditions in which they are formed. The controlling reaction for desulphurization is then:2,3 FeS + (CaO) <=* (CaS) + (FeO) The slags of the reducing stage in the electric furnace have an iron-oxide concentration which is intermediate between blast-furnace and open-hearth slags. The study of the mechanism of desulphurization for these slags has been the object of this investigation. The importance of low (FeO) in the slag for desulphurization was first verified by Bardenheuer and Geller,& who found that high desulphurization ratios were obtained in highly reduced slags. It was recognized" hat iron oxide in the slag becomes a controlling factor in desulphurization only at FeO concentrations approximately under 5 pct. A recent investigation conducted by Buehl,7 upon the suggestion of one of the authors, confirmed this opinion from the results obtained from a heat conducted in a small arc furnace. In the present investigation, slags of very high basicity, such as often are encountered in the basic electric furnace, could not be studied, but equilibrium data have been obtained for slags in a wide basicity range. The iron-oxide concentration in these slags ranged from 0.08 to 15 pct and was controlled by the addition of silicon to the metal. Other constituents of the slags were mainly CaO, MgO, SiO2, A120,, and CaF,. The experimental technique was essentially the same as that of previous investigations.1 8-lo In an open magnesia-lined induction furnace, 65 lb of Armco ingot iron was melted. An atmosphere of hydrogen was maintained over the melt for 1 hr to bring the carbon content down to approximately 0.010 pct maximum. The bath then was exposed to air for 25 min to remove hydrogen. The electrodes were put in place, and the furnace was operated from this point on in an atmosphere of nitrogen. A synthetic slag was added to which additions of silicon and iron sulphide were made. IN processing magnetic taconites several steps of crushing, grinding, classification, and magnetic separation are required to produce a 60&apos; pct Fe concentrate. Usually the final concentrate is in a slurry form of 55 to 70 pct solids by weight and is further characterized by a particle size of 60+ pct —325 mesh. In taconite plants already completed or under construction the conventional method used to obtain pellets suitable for blast furnaces is to filter the concentrate slurry, ball the filter cake, and then harden the green pellets in a traveling grate or in a vertical shaft furnace. Large tonnages must be handled in minimum floor space, with reduced maintenance and lowest possible operating cost. Filtration must therefore achieve two objectives: I) high filtration rate—in terms of pounds of dry solids per hour per square foot of filtration area—at a low filtrate solids concentration, and 2) a filter cake moisture that will always permit efficient balling within the normal fluctuations of &apos; plant operating conditions. If moisture contents are too high, balling may be impossible or result in a mushy ball .without enough green strength for the firing operation. Development work has met these objectives. At low investment and operating costs, filtration rates of 250 to 600 dry lb per hr per ft2 have been attained for concentrates of 60&apos; pct —325 mesh. By combining the disk-type continuous filter with proper agitation, the Agidisc filter produces a homogeneous filter cake, easily discharged from the disk sectors. This application provides the lowest initial cost per square foot of filtration area, minimizes floor space, reduces down time for changing filter media to a negligible factor, and simplifies process control and maintenance for the operator. It is now possible to predict very closely the taconite concentrate filtration rates for a wide variety of conditions—either by experience or with a few simple leaf tests. When balling and pelletizing operations began on a continuous basis, it became apparent that moisture content of the filter cake was a critical factor and must always be controlled by the filter operator below some maximum allowable value. Accordingly the Reserve Mining Co. and the Eimco Corp. joined in a study of the many variables affecting filter cake moisture content. The study was conducted at the Reserve Mining Co. taconite plant at Babbitt, Minn. To process plant tonnage the Babbitt plant utilizes a 6-ft diam Agidisc filter with six disks and an 8-ft diam drum filter with 10-ft face. However, most of the plant filter investigations were made on the Agidisc because of its superior performance. A considerable amount of small-scale test work was first carried out to study more closely the individual variables and ascertain their effect on filter cake moisture content. A general correlation method was then developed which allowed reasonable prediction of moisture content at any operating conditions. This step was made necessary by the fact that in full-scale filtering, operating variables usually interact to produce a combined rather than a singular effect. Studies were then made on the full-scale filters to prove the validity of the correlations developed, and past operating records were examined to ascertain whether or not significant variations could be traced to any single factor or to a combination of factors.

The activity of nickel in liquid Pb-iVi alloys which are rich in lead was measured in the temperature region of 700° to 1100°C by means of the galvanic cell: The electrolyte used was stabilized zirconia. The work of Kuikkola and wagnerl and Schmalz-reid2 has shown that the stabilized zirconia electrolyte is essentially an ionic conductor at the oxygen levels encountered in the experimental arrangement of the work, i .e., PG > 10-l7 atm. THE EXPERIMENTS The advantage of this type of reversible cell over those using a liquid electrolyte is the simplicity arising because the electrolyte also functions as one of the containing crucibles. A further simplification was the choice of the Ni (sat.)-NiO electrode as the standard. This permitted a ready check on the behavior of the electrolyte, as the potential of the cell must become zero when the right electrode becomes saturated with nickel, either because of a change of temperature or because of the addition of nickel to the electrode. It also permitted the potentials being measured to lie in the most satisfactory experimental range of 0 to 100 mv. Although it was not theoretically necessary, lead was included in the standard electrode as it assured good contact between the electrode and electrolyte. Cell Design. The general arrangement of the experimental cell assembly is shown in Fig. l(a) and the details of the cell itself are contained in Fig. l(b). The anode lead wire on the interior of the cell was connected to a coil of perforated sheet nickel. Within this coil were nickel oxide pellets which were held beneath the surface of the liquid Pb-Ni alloy. A disc of nickel oxide was held at the bottom of the external crucible (alumina) by means of the thermocouple protection tube. The nickel oxide disc and pellets were compressed dry at 10,000 psi and sintered at approximately 1000°C for an hour in air. The production of oil and gas from wells is often seriously hindered by the compaction of solids in the perforations during the perforating process. To realize the full productive capacity of a well, it is necessary either to remove the plugging material from the perforations or to perforate in a manner which does not cause plugging of the perforations. The latter method can be accomplished by having a non-plugging fluid in the casing at the time the well is perforated. This paper describes the results of laboratory tests, perforating tests, and experimental field tests which demonstrate that certain emulsions serve effectively as non-plugging perforating fluids. The principal components of these emulsions are two liquids: an aqueous phase consisting of a solution of either sodium chloride or calcium chloride, and an oil phase consisting of diesel oil, tetrachloroethylene, or a combination of both. Small amounts of other agents which serve to stubilize the emulsions, to reduce the fluid loss, and to inhibit corrosion are also present. The density of the emulsions is controllable within the range of 7.5 to 12.5 lb/gal; no insoluble solids are present, the filtration rate is low, and the thermal stability is satisfactory at temperatures as high as 200°F. The corrosion of steel by these emulsions is negligible. Tests conducted under conditions which simulate the temperature and the pressure in an actual well demonstrate that these emulsions fulfill the requirements of a non-plugging perforating fluid. In addition, lirnited field experience furnishes evidence that these emulsions remain in position after they are spotted, that they are retained in the casing after the perforations are made, and that they are easily removed from the perforations when the well is opened for production. When the pressure in the borehole is greater than the formation pressure at the time a well is perforated, plugging of the perforations can be avoided by spotting an emulsion adjacent the interval to be perforated. This procedure should eliminate low well productivity caused by plugging the perforations. INTRODUCTION Nature of Problem The most widely used method for the completion of oil and gas wells is to set and cement casing through productive horizons, and then to obtain production by gun-perforating the section of casing opposite the desired interval. This method is gen- erally successful and it was thought at one time that those failures which did occur were due to insufficient penetration by the perforator. Despite recent improvements in perforators which assure ample penetration, unsatisfactory fluid production continues to be a problem. Evidently, the trouble comes from some other source. Recent results obtained by Allen and Worzel1 demonstrated that low fluid productivity may be caused by the perforating process and/or by the fluid in the wellbore at the time of shooting. They found that perforations are often completely plugged by debris from the perforator, pulverized sand from the formation, and compacted solids from the drilling mud when the pressure in the wellbore is greater than the pressure in the formation at the time of perforation. In some cases a differential pressure in excess of 400 psi was required to initiate flow into the well through these plugged perforations. The plugging of perforations by solids not only causes low productivity from wells, but it creates simultaneously other problems in the production of oil and gas. For example, when most of the perforations are plugged, high rates of flow must occur through the few perforations that are open. The resulting high pressure drop may cause production

The industry has been canvassed for information on methods of handling grinding steel at milling plants, an important subject overlooked in most descriptive articles on milling plant arrangements. The data collected are offered in this paper as a guide to designers and planners who have loading and storage problems to solve. WITH capacities of milling plants expanding from a few hundred tons per day to many thousand, replenishment of grinding media is an important phase of mill operation. Information on this aspect of milling procedure, solicited from several mining companies, is summarized here. At International Nickel&apos;s Copper Cliff concentrator the normally strenuous job of changing rods is considerably simplified by the use of the Garrow rod charging machine, Fig. 1. The overhead crane, Fig. 2, brings a bundle of rods, weighing four to a ton, to the loading platform of the machine, positioned in front of the mill. The rods roll one by one down the slight incline of the platform onto a conveyor which sends them into the mill. A modified version of the Garrow machine, Fig. 3, is used at the Federal mill of St. Joseph Lead Co. An overhead crane places the portable steel structure in position in front of the discharge end of any one of the five 9x12-ft rod mills. It then raises a bundle of about twenty 3-in. rods to the discharge platform of the charging machine. The rods are 11 ft 7 in. long and weigh about 278 lb. By tripping a lever the operator allows one rod at a time to roll onto the inclined rollers. A slight push by the operator sends the rod smoothly into the mill. The Union Miniére du Haut Katanga rod charging machine, Fig. 4, is mounted on a pair of wheels at the forward end with swiveling castors at the back for steering it to position for use or storage. Wheels are equipped with locking brakes to maintain the machine in position while it delivers rods to the mill. The device is made in two parts. The first consists of the base, which carries the supporting wheels, grooved rollers, and drive. The other part serves as the rod deck, which can carry up to six 3-in. x 12-ft rods. A short boom built integral with the base reaches through the mill trunnion and delivers the rods into the mill barrel. Three grooved guide rollers ,are provided to receive the rods from the sloping charging deck. One rod at a time is fed to the rollers and thus delivered into the mill. Two of the rollers are driven by 11/2-hp motor through a V-belt drive. The third roller is driven off the first by a single V belt in a groove below the rod groove and on the same center line. Rods are delivered to the charger by an overhead crane in bundles of three to six as needed. The power is supplied by cables plugged into power outlets, suitably located near the rod mill discharge end. The Oliver Iron Mining Co. uses a rod charger, Fig. 5, suspended from a monorail by cables. It is constructed .of structural steel and has two decks, each capable of carrying five rods of 4-in. maximum diameter. The rods ride in grooved free-turning rollers. Sodium carbonate or soda ash is one of the two principal alkalis of commerce, the other being sodium hydroxide. The use of sodium carbonate is recorded in ancient Egypt, where naturally occurring brines or solid salts were the source of impure soda for glass manufacture. In early modern times until the 19th century, soda ash, as well as potash, was recovered mainly by leaching the ashes of plants. In Europe, during the 18th century, a brown lye for laundering was produced by pouring hot water over burned seaweed. One of the better grades of this kind of material was a product from Spain termed "barilla," which analyzed 24 to 30% Na2CO3 (Hou, 1942). The birth of the modern chemical industry may be said to start with the LeBlanc process for making sodium carbonate from salt, sulfuric acid, and lime. Although invented in France in 1691, England made the most extensive use of it. In 1863 Ernst Solvay devised the ammonia-soda or Solvay process, and by 1874 the first of many Solvay plants was built. These were to supplant the LeBlanc method and dominate soda-ash production until the present time. Although of lesser importance, natural sodium carbonate deposits continued to support operations in various parts of the world. Shortages during World War II stimulated production of "natural" soda ash, particularly at Searles Lake, Calif., and at Lake Magadi, Kenya. Within the last ten years in the United States, a notable surge in production has occurred based on the vast trona deposits in Wyoming. Table 1 lists some principal producers of natural soda ash and the character of the source deposits. Uses and Specifications Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) is a white, crystalline hygroscopic powder, an aqueous solution of which is strongly alkaline. Most commercial soda ash is a product that must meet high standards of purity and uniformity. Two forms are commonly sold: a fine, powdery material called light ash, and a more coarsely crystalline dense ash; these weigh 32 to 39 and 60 to 66 lb per cu ft, respectively. Dense ash may be produced by adding a little calcium chloride to the sodium carbonate solution to control crystal size and prevent agglomeration. Specifications and typical analyses of light and dense ash in the United States are shown in [Table 2]. Sizing generally achieves about 75% of light ash and 90% of dense ash between +30 and -100 U.S. screen mesh. World use of sodium carbonate now exceeds 24 million tpy, of which the United States produces more than 7 million tons. The market for soda ash is dominated by the glass industry, which uses almost half the supply. Inorganic chemicals, including phosphates and silicates, consume about 30%. Other principal uses include the manufacture of soaps and detergents, petroleum, caustic soda, organic chemicals, and paper; and nonferrous and ferrous metallurgy. [Fig. 1] shows the percent consumption by use of soda ash in Europe, Japan, and the United States. The price of soda ash in the United States remained relatively stable during the 1960s at about $33 per ton; in 1972 it reached $35 per ton. The price in 1975 was $42 per ton. Geology Mineralogy [Table 3] is a list of the more common sodium carbonate-bearing minerals. Anhydrous sodium carbonate is almost never found in nature; only natron, thermonatrite, and trona have been used directly as sources of sodium carbonate. ORDERING reactions of Fe-Si compositions in the a region have been mentioned in a number of review articles.7-8 However, little is known in regard to the critical temperature, T at which this transformation takes place. Greiner and Stoughton,&apos; in a study of the constitution of iron-rich Fe-Si alloys below 800°C, placed the onset of order at a composition of about 4 to 5 wt pct (7.5 to 9.5 atomic pct) Si. They observed that at this composition the ductility and strength begin to decrease sharply and brittleness develops. During X-ray studies they observed only the appearance of superlattice lines for compositions containing 12.5 atomic pct Si. More recent X-ray diffraction studies- etected the appearance of superstructure lines (corresponding to the calculated positions of [Ill] and [ZOO] reflections) for alloys containing 9.5 atomic pct. This fact confirms Greiner and Stoughton&apos;s original hypothesis in regard to the onset of order at compositions containing about 7.5 to 9.5 atomic pct Si. The physical properties.of Fe-Si alloys containing more than 10 atomic pct Si have been studied only to a limited extent. Their extreme brittleness and difficulties of sample preparation render them of little industrial use in comparison with alloys in the 0 to 10 atomic pct Si range. The properties of Fe-Si alloys reported to date are mostly properties measured at room temperature on ordered compositions It appears that because of experimental difficulties fully disordered alloys could not be produced in the critical composition ranges and their properties could therefore not be reported. In Figs. la, lb, and lc, a summary of physical properties of Fe-Si alloys, measured during recent investigations of the influence of silicon additions to iron, is presented. No mention of determination of the critical temperature, T for disorder could be found in the literature. The following is an account of work done in an attempt to: 1) produce the disordered state of various Fe-Si alloys and establish the critical temperature, T for disordering, and 2) compare the electrical and thermal conductivity characteristics of the ordered and disordered phases as functions of composition. Materials, Preparation of Test Samples, and Testing Methods Fe-Si alloys with high silicon contents (about 10 atomic pct) are usually prepared using powder metallurgy techniques. This method insures accurate compositions and high purity through the use of protective atmospheres during solid state diffusion alloying of the mixed powders."" Iron and silicon powders were mixed in the desired proportions, cold or hot pressed, and then homogenized at 1150°C for periods ranging from 6 to 12 hr under a protective getter and in a hydrogen atmosphere. Fully homogenized samples were quenched in water from various and successively higher temperatures to establish the critical temperature for disorder. Temperatures were determined using Pt—Pt-Rh thermocouples in contact with the test samples. Test bars were approximately 0.6x1.25x7.5 cm. Electrical measurements were made at room temperature by determining the potential drop over a 1.5 cm span for a current of 10 amp. Densities of the samples were determined by immersion. High temperature electrical resistivities were measured using previously described techniques.&apos;" Specific heat conductivity up to 200°C was measured by heating one end of the test bar and water-cooling the other; heat conductivity was then obtained by subtracting the rate at which heat entered the water from the

THE ENGINEERS have placed this great country of ours in a preeminent position with everything pertaining to manufacture, metallurgy, and the kindred arts. We are second to none in the world. We have a country which, another speaker has said, God has endowed with such riches in coal and natural resources as no other country in the world. But rich as these are, there is one thing greater; the sturdy character, energy, and integrity of its people, which will make these great resources an influence in the world&apos;s developments. Great as are these resources and the energy and integrity of our people, there is one problem of our .engineering, which I term human engineering, that is of far more importance than the creation of machines and methods, with which you have been so successful in the past. Of what value is the skillfully devised machinery, the complex process, unless manned and operated by people whose heart and soul are in sympathy with the work they are doing and who have before them the giving of a complete day&apos;s work for a day&apos;s pay?

In an interesting article on evaluation of the water problem at Eureka, Nev., W. T. Stuart describes how a difficult water problem, or one phase of it, may be evaluated by means of a small scale test. Test data are plotted by a method rendering, under certain conditions, a straight-line graph that can be projected to show how much the water table will be lowered by pumping at any specified rate for a given time. A formula is then used to determine the size of opening, or extent of workings, necessary to provide sufficient inflow to enable pumping to be maintained at that rate. At first glance this might seem the answer to a miner&apos;s prayer, but a word of caution is in order. It may not be the whole answer. Moreover, results obtained by the method described are reliable only for conditions approximating those assumed. Even where conditions do not meet this requirement, however, it may be possible to draw helpful inferences from the results, perhaps enough to facilitate another approach to evaluation of a problem.

THE Woman&apos;s Auxiliary now has its own publica-tion, a monthly news letter that is mailed direct to all its members. It is a lively and readable sheet. Any member of the Auxiliary failing to receive it should communicate with Mrs. J. E. Johnson, Jr., 49 Church Lane, Scarsdale, N. Y., and get on the mailing list. The detailed reports of the meetings will hereafter ap-pear in the News Letter rather than in MINING AND METALLURGY. The regular Board meeting held on March 3, with Mrs. Barron presiding, was well attended and the re-ports of the committees, and from local sections, showed a keen interest in the work. of the organization. Steps are being taken to endow a "Mary Young Westervelt Scholarship," libraries are being built up in mining towns, and interesting reunions .are being held by the members in the various local sections. The Auxiliary is filling an important place and doing it well. Women of the families of Institute members not already affili-ated with it would find it pleasant to get in touch.

Some years ago it was my good fortune to inspect some coal properties in Germany, and the most striking impression I received on my trip was that in that country every one in the coal industry, miners and operators, was proud of the fact-not apologetic about it-and that industrially coal was looked upon as a King. The explanation, of course, was that at least 90 per cent of the entire mineral value produced in Germany was from coal, and that it was the very foundation of the nation&apos;s industrial life. The feeling was so different from that existing in the United States among those engaged in producing coal that it made a profound impression on me, and many times since then I have speculated about the reasons for the difference in opinion in the two countries. Here, of course, our units are much smaller and more numerous, there is not so large a proportion of technically trained men, and we have the American trait of depreciating the things we do at home; but among those not actively

W. R. CHEDSEY first saw the light of day in Boulder, Colo., in 1887, and will celebrate his birthday on Feb. 11. Mining early attracted him, so he went to the Colorado School of Mines, from which he received his E.M. in 1908, and an honorary doctor&apos;s degree thirty years later. The next three years he spent at the University of Idaho, doing special work in mechanical and electrical engineering and serving as associate professor of mining engineering. Leaving Idaho in 1911 he went to Central America as chief engineer and general superintendent of the Central American Development Co. The next year he jumped several thousand miles to the north to become chief engineer and assistant general manager of the Alaska Exploration Co. But teaching was Chedsey&apos;s choice so he returned to his alma mater, serving on the faculty at Golden from 1913 to 1916. Then to Penn State where he was professor of mining for 21 years, until going to Rolla to become director of the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1937.

THE object of all classification is to group together things which are alike, and separate those which are unlike. This object is essentially a practical one, enabling us to apply past experience to new conditions: Many costly large-scale experiments lose half their importance for want of proper description of the coal used, and the consequent impossibility of predicting other coals will behave in the same way. I do not, therefore, make a fundamental distinction between "scientific" and "use" classifications, except in so far as use depends on conditions, such as size or impurities which are not related to the nature of the coal substance itself. The characters chosen to define the classes of coal must be such as are accompanied by as many other properties as possible. It is not to be expected that any system of classification will enable us to predict every property of coal, since all specimens have an individuality of their own. But specimens can be grouped by a number of resemblances into species. Further, species which resemble each other can be grouped into genera.

Alaska requires an adequate fuel supply for its development, and has large potential coal reserves ranging from lignite to subbituminous and anthracite. Coal production in the Territory now is less than the requirements. In 1947, production was 361,000 tons, divided about equally between bituminous coal from the Matanuska field and subbituminous coal from the Nenana field. There is need for development of modern mechanized mines, which should produce the required output with a minimum of workers. These mines should not be thought of in the light of large potential capacity, as in the States. However, these new mines should be developed by modern methods, which should result in lower costs than at present. Because of the diverse physical conditions in the coal fields, intensive investigation by diamond drilling is necessary to properly plan the development and equipment of mine sites at minimum cost. The Bureau of Mines is doing this now in the Wishbone Hill area of the Matanuska field. All coal land in Alaska is government-owned and subject to the Coal Leasing Act.

The University of Illinois, by Prof. H. H. Stock, professor of mining engineering, sent out to its mining students a long letter urging them to attend a Chicago meeting of the Institute. It stated that the University Council authorized the remission of the registration fee for sophomore, junior and senior mining engineers who would attend the meetings and present a written account of the sessions and excursions attended. Young engineers are rarely flushed at the beginning of their careers but if they ever expect to amount to anything at the end of 10-years-they are going to regret that they have not long been a member of the Insti-tute. So that the slogan "Do it now" is snore than particularly appli-cable in their cases and nothing will better indicate to them the scope of the Institute&apos;s work and the advantages which they are to get from mem-bership than attendance at one of the big meetings of the Institute and the preparation of a written report on the sessions and excursions attended to be returned to the University.

Mr. Shaw&apos;s work showed the dodecyl mercaptan as a very good collector compared with other collectors on Cu-Mo ores, Mo ores, and for Au and Au-Ag ores plus Pt ores. However, as one who has had extensive experience on Cu-Mo ores, the work is not complete in making only a rougher concentrate with a collector; the work must be carried on in making a Cu-Mo separation. Did Mr. Shaw do any of this work? Before trying the dodecyl mercaptan as a Cu-Mo collector for the Cu-Mo ore it would be well to have any new work conducted knowing how the reagent acts on the Mo. Will it allow a good separation? The use of the collector at Palabora was also mentioned. From some earlier literature I thought that the reagent has been used as an oxide Cu collector after the sulfide mineral was floated out. I thought the pH at this point was about 1.5-3.0. I would like to have this point clarified.

To know the rate of decline of oil wells is very important, yet ordinarily we are prevented from getting this rate because the oil from several wells is put into one or a few tanks as soon as the wells have been connected to the power. The object of doing this is economy of tanks, pipes, labor and accounting. FIG. 1. But we are making a great sacrifice for this small economy. The advantages of the individual records are that we would know better: 1. When the well has ceased to be profitable. 2. When a well has gotten into bad condition. 3. The real record of the yield per acre and the rate of decline of the wells. The lease total is too mixed as to age of the wells for existing records to have much significance. To obtain such individual well records and more accurate logs are the great desiderata of satisfactory management of oil properties. 4. Which wells show the slowest decline-information which is valuable in locating new wells or purchasing adjoining leases.

Report of the Americanization Society, New York Section During the past two months the Americanization Committee has held social meetings of various kinds for foreign-born women, as a preliminary to future effort along the lines of Americanization work. At the same time, a thorough investigation was made as to the work being done in New York by organizations devoted to this interest. The committee will be very glad to help any other committees being formed, in mining centers, with advice and information that has been gathered together as to classes and meetings of all kinds best suited to the needs of a foreign-born population. The work has been so extensively taken up in New York that for the present it would seem to be, for this committee, the most profitable and interesting work to continue the social meetings and to undertake the care of one or more immigrant families, to be friend and adviser in joy and sorrow, work and play, and in this way do some fundamental Americanization work. IT is often desirable to obtain one or more accurate horizontal sections of a blast furnace after blowing out. Wishing to do this, last April, in the case of No. 4 furnace at Glendon, which had worn in a very remarkable manner, the method described below was employed, with very good results. A scaffold was fixed in the furnace, and on it was placed a drawing- board, covered with paper, the top of which was made level at exactly the height at which the section was to he taken. (Fig. 8.) The centre of the furnace (which had previously been found, and marked on a plank across the top) was laid off on it by dropping a plumb-bob from above, and a strong needle was driven into the board in the centre. By means of a straight-edge and two plumb- bobs, the line passing through the centres of the front and back arches was also drawn on the board.
