G. Derge—With the development of this last weapon, there is not much of a chance for hydrogen. It is certainly a very interesting paper, and it gives us more confidence in sampling liquid steel for hydrogen than we have ever had before. This satisfactory work gives considerable confidence to all of the chilled methods of sampling which should be more or less successful depending upon the degree of chilling obtained. J. T. MacKenzie—How do you handle a nonmagnetic specimen in that device? D. J. Carney (authors' reply)—I left that out in going over the analytical procedure. For the 18-8 steel, what was done was to get some iron wire which was degassed. One turn of wire was made around the sample; it was inserted into the analytical apparatus, and that was enough to allow the magnet to pull the sample and drop it in the furnace. Other methods could be devised for this apparatus to do the same thing. This was just a quick method. C. E. Sims—This method of sampling and analysis is very ingenious, and the results obtained attest to a satisfactory degree of accuracy. It was noted in the paper that the samples are satisfactory only when there is a complete absence of pipe. This should be empha- sized, particularly in view of the fact that they are cut off under water. Some reservations are held in regard to the adequacy of the method of sample storage prior to analysis. Cooling on dry ice undoubtedly slows down the rate of diffusion to a marked degree, and it obviously suffices when the analysis is made within a few hours. All of the samples, except some of high-nickel steels, were analyzed within 12 hr. It is still unknown how long this method would be safe. In the work at Battelle Institute, it was impracticable always to start analysis within 12 hr for various reasons. Some samples did not reach the laboratory for several days, and some were held as long as a month before analysis. During this period, they were held over mercury, and the gas evolved at room temperature was collected and analyzed. It should be mentioned that both the mercury and the container must be kept very clean.

. E. P. MATHEWSON, New York, N. Y.-I would like to call attention to the excellent plan for protecting the lining of the tanks from rough handling by the excavator. Many engineers, when considering mechanical excavators for lead-lined tanks, have been afraid that the machinery might get out' of order and rip out the lining. This difficulty seems to have been entirely overcome in this installation, and those who have been responsible for its success deserve a great deal of credit. A. F. CASE,* Cleveland, Ohio. (written discussion t).-The application of the automatic unloader to the copper leaching process at Ajo was a very radical departure from the common use of this machine, inasmuch as the only previous use of this device has been in connection with the unloading of coal and ore from vessels on the Great Lakes. There are many phases in connection with the unloading of ore from lake vessels that are not presented in the extraction of ore tailings from leaching vats. For instance, in unloading from boats, it is necessary to provide means to reach under the hatches to parts of the cargo hold which do not lie directly under the hatches, and to work in inaccessible places that do not exist in a leaching vat. These necessities require complications that could be very easily dispensed with in this new application. On this account the unloader, is applied to the New Cornelia, plant, represents what is probably the simplest development of the machine that has ever been produced, and, manifestly, in its simplest form it could he expected to show results corresponding to its performances when installed with all of its complications. One of the requirements of vessel unloading is extreme vertical travel, when the bucket is required to reach the bottom of the, cargo hold, often 12 or 13 ft. below water-level, and discharge into a receptacle 30 ft. above-the water. This was materially simplified at Ajo for the reason that the vertical travel was never more than 20 ft. This condition immediately resulted in the possibility of shortening the walking beam which carries the bucket leg, and, in fact, in entirely reducing the size of all the working, parts of the trolley, walking beam, and bucket leg, as far as reaches were concerned.

Discussion of the paper of DWIGHT T. FARNHAM, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 93, September, 1914, pp. 2357 to 2364. DAVID T. DAY, Washington, D. C.-Do you know anything about the character of that clay as to organic matter? H. RIES, Ithaca, N. Y.-No; it is a dark brownish clay, sandy in its nature. The brownish coloring is probably due to organic matter. Some lignite is also present. DONALD W. Ross.*-I have worked at the plant under consideration. I have not seen Mr. Farnham's paper; but in answering the question as to the organic matter, I might say there is practically no organic material scattered through the shale. There are, however, several layers of carbonaceous shale and rather low-grade coal interbedded with the formation. There are two very serious drawbacks-one which threatens to shut down the plant and another which merely means the expenditure of money. The first is taking care of the sediment from the washing away of the overburden. The government is doing extensive work at different points about Lake Washington with a view to creating a fresh-water harbor for Seattle. I understand that they keep at the Denny-Renton people to keep the channel of Cedar River clear. The Denny-Renton Co. can hardly help filling up the channel so long as they continue their hydraulic work, so this is probably one of their most serious problems. The other is this: There is a large percentage of what I should call micaceous shale or sandstone-a sandstone which contains a large amount of light-colored mica. Of course only a limited amount of this can be used in the manufacture of paving brick. As they shoot down the bank after the overburden of gravel and loam is washed away, these large boulders of micaceous sandstone come down. The strata have apparently been crushed where the clay pit is located so that the exact formation cannot be readily determined. These pieces of sandstone, 5 or 6 ft. in diameter, have to be blasted and removed from the shale. They bother both in the open pit and in the tunnel mining. In the tunnel mining of the shale blocks frequently cover the holes in the roof of the tunnel through which the shale is loaded into cars.

CHARLES F. WILLIS,* Bisbee, Ariz. (written discussion ?).-There are few mine officials who will not say that there is, great need of vocational schools in mining communities, but the absence of success of so many of these ventures makes them wary about establishing such schools. They have neither the time nor the facilities to study the systems and to analyze the factors that have made certain schools a success and others a failure. In the first place, it is difficult to secure the proper instructors. Educators cannot make the appeal to the workmen, because of their lack of experience, and experienced men who are capable of the appeal are not usually educators, knowing nothing about the presentation of the subject. Then, too, there is ordinarily no objective in a mine school. The workman is not reached by a school that makes him merely a more valuable man to his employer, unless he can participate in the gain. An objective, as promotion or financial gain, would appeal to the man and would make for regular attendance. Usually vocational schools are run like all others-a number of subjects at a time, continued from one day to another. This is impractical for the workman, whose mind cannot work like the mind of a school boy. The school boy is spending most of his time in school work, while the man is doing it as a side issue, and he cannot be expected to pick up tonight's lesson where last night's left off. The workman is accustomed to the idea of completing a job and doing one thing at a time; his mind is trained that way, and for this reason a school that works on the principal that each lesson is a complete job, with no reference to the previous or following lesson, will go a long way toward removing one of the things that has caused many failures. The usual vocational schools .in mining communities are either very elementary, or are run by the engineering staff and, consequently, are too advanced. There is no plan between. It is believed that there is a possibility of a halfway type, but this is a subject that is large enough for a paper by itself and is entirely, too broad to be presented as a discussion.

I HAVE been asked to discuss "What Can be Done to Revive the Mining Industry," particularly from the standpoint of the copper industry. It is impossible to consider this problem, if in fact there can be one, from an isolated position. The mining industry is but a part, although a very important one, of that exceedingly complicated machine characterized as commerce, which comprises within its operation and functions the-multitudinous activities that, combined, make up the sum total of the production, manufacture, distribution, sale and utilization of goods and products resulting from the agrarian, industrial and commercial effort of mankind. We survey a world today with its disturbed mass of humanity permeated with discontent, passions loosened by brutal combat not yet brought under control, class hatreds aroused, national prejudices in a state of stimu-lated excitement, governments for the most part enfeebled, some destroyed to their foundations, with fragile structures raised in place of those that seemed enduring, and which have disappeared. A burden of indebtedness incurred in defiance of all economic law exists, to meet the exactions of which, levies of taxation that constitute a grievous burden upon effort and industry are exacted by the needs of those nations that are most favored, while printing presses are busy manufacturing currency that either has, or approaches, a negative value among those less favored. This picture, while not pleasant, is one that should be looked at squarely and carefully appraised in estimating the immediate future. For four years the world marshalled, and exerted without stint, its combined endurance, vitality and resource in an effort of destruction, which violated no less the orderly working of physical and economic laws than it did the conventions of social and civic relations. To have imagined that without travail the orderly processes that governed the relations of mankind could at once be reestablished and begin functioning, was, as has been demonstrated, fallacious; perhaps no more so than the error that is committed today by those opportunists who fail to take cogni-zance of basic conditions which must be remedied be-fore the world can resume its progress to a universally prosperous and satisfactory condition. Please do not gather from this somewhat unpleasant recital that I regard the future with gloomy foreboding or entertain pessimistic doubts, for, emphatically, I do not.

BY the courtesy of Mr. Charles W. Jenks, of Boston, one of the owners of this interesting mine, I am enabled to lay before the Institute a suite of specimens, illustrating its peculiar formation and the paragenesis of mineral species which it presents; and a recent brief visit and rapid reconnoissance of the locality permit me to supplement this exhibition with a general description, based upon personal observation. The mine is situated upon the Culsagee Fork of the Tennessee River, in Macon County, North Carolina, a few miles from Franklin. The most practicable route by which it can at present be visited is by wagon (or preferably on horseback) from Seneca City, S. C., a station on the Charlotte and Atlanta Air Line Railroad. The itinerary is as follows: to Walhalla,* nine miles; Walhalla to Highlands, twenty-nine miles; Highlands to the Culsagee, fourteen miles. By passing the night at or near Highlands, the mine can be reached and examined and the return to Highlands made on the second day; and the round trip, if performed in the saddle, can be completed in three days from Seneca City. It is not easy, with due regard to steed and rider, to do it in less time. The rough and precipitous mountain roads do not permit rapid travel ; and the journey is at best a fatiguing one. But its slight hardships are overpaid by the stimulating effect of the climate and the great beauty of the scenery, both of which are destined to become more widely known than at present, to seekers for health and pleasure. Indeed the town of Highlands, already named, is almost entirely made up of northern immigrants, attracted by these advantages and by the inducement of cheap land for agriculture and stock-raising. The Culsagee or Sugartown fork of the Tennessee traverses the belt of ancient crystalline schists on the west flank of the Blue Ridge. This belt abounds in valuable minerals. Among those of the nonmetallic class may be mentioned graphite, soapstone, serpentine, ashes- * A branch or cross railroad is in operation as far as Walhalla ; but the single daily train runs at an hour not convenient for this expedition ; and Seneca City is probably the best starting-point. At all events, I obtained there an excellent mount for the trip.

In 1900, Elmore found that if an acidulated pulp was stirred up with an oil which was relatively insoluble in and lighter than water, and the mixture was allowed to stratify, much of the sulfide would be found hanging to the lower surface of the floating body of oil and could be skimmed off or overflowed with it. The action of the flotation agent here is twofold, first to select the sulfide from the gangue—what today is called collection—and second, to buoy the collected sulfide away from the gangue. The action in collecting is illustrated by Fig. 1: which contrasts the behavior of drops of oil brought, under water, to the surfaces of gangue and sulfide particles, respectively. The oil displaces water from the surface of the sulfide; the water displaces oil from the gangue surface. If, instead of considering the solid particles the fixed parts of the system of oil, water and solids. we consider the oil and water fixed and the solids presented to the surface of contact, the condition will be as shown in Fig. 2; the sulfide tends to be drawn into the interface and the gangue to be excluded. The sulfide particles are held in the oil-water surface by the tension of this surface. The buoyant effect is supplied by the oil droplets in bringing the sulfides to the water surface, but not in holding them there. Gas as Buoyant Medium of Flotation In 1906 Sulman. Picard and Ballot discovered a practical and substantially fool-proof method of doing what Everson, in 1886, and Fro-nlcnt. DeBavay Bessel and Elmore had been doing in the intervening years, viz.: using gas in place of oil as the buoyant medium for flotation, but retaining oil as the agent. To all of these inventors "oil," with no qualification as to its kind and no true understanding of its function, was the important thing. Hut they placed on the oil an additional burden viz.: froth-making, and it soon became apparent that not all oils were suitable for the dual purpose. As a matter of fact, it is probable that each of these inventors knew only one suitable oil at the time he wrote his patent, but used the generic term in the patent with the usual idea

E. G. WOODRUFF, Houston, Tex. (communication to the Secretary*). -Mr. Matteson has presented to us an idea worthy of our careful consideration. We have real troubles in the petroleum industry and as the supply of crude is exhausted our problems become more complicated and more numerous. Therefore, we who are engaged in field work are forced to consider all possible means which promise assistance in the location of prospective pools and the economic development of pools already located. In our country we are accustomed to turn to the. Government for relief in all our troubles. Do we want an Oil and Gas Bureau doctoring us? Will such a bureau do us practical good? The principal point Mr. Matteson suggests is that such a bureau should he authorized to receive and file all well logs. In analyzing such function, I am led to the following conclusions: If well logs are simply to be filed they would be useless. If they are to be filed and the files opened to the public, what benefit will be derived and can such action be taken justly? There is no doubt that if the record of all wells drilled in the United States were available the petroleum industry would be saved an immense amount of needless expense. Accumulating conditions would be better understood and prospecting more intelligently directed. Our other consideration is: can the oil companies be required to open well records to the public justly? I think all will agree that if any one should have the advantage of a well record it should be the company that drilled the well. If the oil companies are forced to file such record and open the files to the public, the company drilling the well cannot derive the exclusive benefit from the money expended. Would it be just for a small company to be compelled to reveal its records of a well it had recently completed, to its strong competitor who holds near or even adjacent leases? Would it have been just to the successful companies, in the Gulf Coast country to have been forced to display their hard-earned knowledge of 15 years to the host of younger competitors who have recently flocked to the Gulf Coast attracted by the success of those who have labored so long and learned of the conditions controlling the fields through the hazards of the industry.

In adding one more to the list of papers that have been presented on the subject of steel rails, I wish to explain at the beginning that in enumerating the steps in the manufacture which, I think, have an all-important effect on the wearing-qualities of the rail produced, I do so with no little hesitation. As a student in the field, I am anxious for the opinions of others, and have finally decided to ask for it in this way. I have not stated everything which I think affects, in one way or another, the life of rails, but have confined myself to those steps in the manufacture which I felt most sure did do so. Recognizing the danger of being carried away by enthusiasm, I have endeavored to make my assertions with caution, and to understate my case rather than to overstate it; but if I have succeeded in throwing a ray of light on this vexed question and placed it in the eyes of some railroad men in an aspect which they have not fully considered, my boldness will be more than justified. I. Uniformity in the quality of the material charged into the converter assists the attainment of uniformity in the steel produced.— This is the argument which is used by the champions of the cupolamelting or indirect process, and has considerable weight. It takes vastly more skill to make good steel if there is a great irregularity in the iron charged into the vessel than if there is not this irregularity ; but on the other hand, there are certain advantages in the direct method, such as a lower sulphur-percentage from the same furnace-iron, while it is possible to get as great uniformity in the iron charged by having the furnace-capacity enough in excess of the demands from the converting department, to allow for occasional " slips " in the furnaces, and permit the mixing of the iron from two furnaces which are respectively too " hot" and too "cold." 11. Care in pouring ingots at the proper temperature into warm moulds, and the treatment of ingots before rolling, have important effects on the rails made from them. RAW bituminous coal has been in general use as a blast-furnace fuel in Scotland for the last century, and although its use has now been largely abandoned and it has been replaced by coke in the majority of the few furnaces which are at, present in blast in this country, coal-smelted pig iron is not yet a thing of the past; it is still being produced and mar-keted in competition with the more cheaply smelted product of the coke-fired furnace. Various factors have influenced this change in practice; the once plentiful deposits of coal of a suitable nature for the blast furnace are now not so easily obtainable; native blackband and clayband ironstones which are easily smelted in the coal-fired blast furnace, although still far from being exhausted, are not available except at a. cost that is somewhat higher than that of imported ores, making them unattractive to the ironmaster that is compelled by circumstances to smelt his iron at the lowest possible cost. Within the last 15 years overproduction of synthetic nitrogen has led to progressive reductions in the price of sulphate of ammonia, the recovery of which together with the other by-products before that time materially assisted in reducing the working costs of the coal-fired furnace. Now the sale of the by-products recovered yields a diminished profit. When the cost of the product is the only consideration the small, slow-smelting, coal-fired blast furnace cannot compare with its large, modern, coke-fired competitor. Other `considerations do not by any means all support the same side of the argument. In the smelting of pig iron to be used in the manufacture of steel where the quality of the final product depends so largely upon the control of the conversion process and so much less upon the physical quality of the pig iron used, the physical properties of the pig iron do not exert any appreciable influence upon the quality of the steel produced, therefore the methods employed in the smelting of the pig iron matter but little so long as the requisite chemical composi-tion is reached. On the other hand, in ironfounding where the simple melting of the pig iron, which is the only treatment it receives before being cast into its final form, does little or nothing to modify its original charac-

As this is the age of reform, a uniform mining law for North America is a moot subject for discussion at this meeting of the Institute. The question is one of peculiarly technical and, in many respects, local character. We all appreciate the value of the metal-producing industries and recognize the necessity and importance of a well-considered and evenly balanced mining law as a branch of our jurisprudence either for the Provinces or the Dominion as a whole. Mining has taken its place as a foremost industry and legislation that seeks to control and govern it is the concern of not only the active miner but the citizens of the state. A law that, through its charitable measures brings into being the prospector, the pathfinder and superstructure of all mining activity and industry, protects his interests, safeguards invested capital, and encourages and enforces development, possesses at least the salient requirements of a businesslike Act. The manner of doing so is, I think, one of local and internal concern. May I be permitted to say without presumption that of the five mining codes, or Acts, that we have in the Dominion of Canada born and bred within the Provinces of British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, some of them could be materially improved. In many respects they do not measure up to the times; they were no doubt creations of merit at the date of their birth but they have not been clothed in seasonable raiment as the years passed by. It is a stern fundamental principle that all natural resources are the inalienable property of the crown. If it is mineral land, then it follows for the protection of the state and the direct advancement of the occupant that the land should be developed as such. The method or machinery by which this must be accomplished is a matter of detail, not of principle. If the right to possession as a licensee depends on discovery, it is not inconsistent with the duty the crown owes to, the state that a grant in fee should pass to the discoverer if there is imposed, after patent issues, a requirement of continuous work or the alternative of an acreage tax sufficiently burdensome to make it unprofitable that the land should be held in an undeveloped state. If, this requirement is recognized, the mental distinction between a grant and lease ceases to exist. A

MAY began with a general strike of the bituminous and anthracite coal miners in the United States in progress, while in Great Britain about three quarters of a million workers became idle by a lockout, caused by a dispute respecting the question of the rights of management in their shops. The employers opened their shops on May 3 to men wishing to resume work, but few availed themselves of the opportunity. Up to this time the statistics had been showing a little increase in the rate of employment in Great Britain and business conditions were considered to be improving. From Russia came reports that the results of the famine had not been so bad as had been prophesied, which is not to say that they were not grievous. In prognostications such things are habitually overesti-mated. Seeding for the new crop has now begun in Russia, with hopes for better results than last year. However, the general economic situation in Russia steadily becomes worse. We had advices during May to the effect that the Soviet Government had decided to abolish the gold ruble even as a theoretical calculating unit and substitute a "goods index." This idea would be somewhat on the lines of Professor Fisher for stablizing the dollar, and there may be a chance to see how it will work in practice. There was a contradictory report from Russia, however, that it had been decided to revert to the gold basis. This is the more plausible report, for if there be anything to be deduced from economic theory and history the present paper rubles will completely collapse and return to gold basis will ensue simply because the people will refuse to sell their goods on anything else. The civil war in China came to a head during the first week in May when General Wu-Pei-fu crushed the forces of General Chang Tso-lin around Pekin. The victor declared his intention to be to reunite the North and the South and in course of time to arrange for a constitutional convention. We probably do not under-stand the conditions in China, but recent events do not appear to have solved the grave difficulties there, though they may be a step toward it. However, the immediate outlook does not appear good, General Chang having retired to the north and declared the secession of Manchuria and Mongolia.

J. Wysor.-Pig iron; we have not made any ferro alloys; or spiegel at Bethlehem in the last 3 years. J. S. UNGER.-DO you use domestic or foreign ores? R. J. WYSOR.-In regular practice, largely foreign ores. J. S. UNGER.-How much per unit does it cost to produce that? R. J. WYSOR.-You might say it does not cost anything; we do not change our blast-furnace practice at all to obtain the dust. Although it has been a profitable byproduct, I would rather not have it unless we could reclaim it on a large scale, as we would have better working stoves. J. S. UNGER.-Does the trade take it as readily as natural salts? W. J. WYSOR.-The fertilizer dealers have been anxious to get it. This did not happen, however, until the war started. J. S., UNGER.-They have been willing to take anything since the war started. R. J. WYSOR.-Yes. However, we could have sold the material before the war; in fact, about 4 years ago, we had a contract ready to sign, but we did not think it would pay us to bother with it then. W. H. Ross, Washington, D. C.-We of the Fertilizer Division of the Bureau of Soils have been particularly interested in Mr. Wysor's investigations on the possibilities of recovering potash from the blast furnace, and we look upon the results he obtained as among the-most important that have yet appeared on the subject of finding new sources of .American potash. About 5 years ago we undertook a corresponding investigation on the recovery of potash in the cement industry. Representative samples of raw mix and ground clinker were collected from the different cement plants in this country with a view to analyzing each sample for potash. With the data thus obtained and knowing the ratio between the raw mix and the cement produced and the output of the latter, we thought it possible to calculate approximately for each plant the quantity of potash that escapes daily from the kilns. In these days, when detailed investigations of stratigraphy, structure, and sand conditions so frequently result in the discovery of new oil fields, and applause from oil companies and the public, geologists do well to walk humbly, and punctiliously to admit that the geologic principles controlling the distribution of oil and gas have as yet been discovered only in part, and that what remains yet to be learned is probably vastly more than what is already known. The few experiments already attempted have been fragmentary, and somewhat desultory, and however positive each of us may be with respect to certain theoretical conclusions, many of the fundamental questions as to the origin and mode of occurrence of petroleum are subject to radical disagreement. Of the chemical changes attending the generation of petroleum from organic matter, little is actually known. Most of the postulated formulas are liable to be misleading, through ignorance of essential factors. Open-minded-ness is therefore a prime essential at the present stage of our science. Nevertheless, adopting the hypothesis that oil originates in some manner fundamentally connected with the organic theory, and in possible departure from such open-mindedness, the writer will pay no attention to the so-called inorganic theory, since every attempt to apply this theory to the study of old oil fields, or to the discovery of new ones, affords cumulative evidence of its inadequacy. In this paper, some of the factors affecting the occurrence of petroleum that the writer believes worthy of consideration by the prospector for oil in any new region will be discussed. Some of these, which arc less generaLly understood, will be considercd somewhat in detail. Other points, the significance of which cannot now be determined, require more field study, and for that reason are here brought to the attention of the field geologist. On the other hand, certain theoretical points which do not bear especially on the oil possibilities of a new region will be given little or no attention. The main topics that will be discussed are: (1) sufficiency of carbonaceous detritus and residues in the oil-forming rocks; (2) stage of carbonization of the organic matter in the oil-bearing formations; (3) folding of the strata; (4) thickness of sedimentary formations; (5) conditions of deposition.

This article demonstrates that the Gilvarry and Klimpel-Austin equations for the random fracture of solids are incorrect by deriving intuitively correct expressions for simple cases and showing that the foregoing equations do not reduce to right answers. It is the purpose of this article to point out serious errors in some existing treatments of the random fracture of solids. Gilvarry ' gives the equation where B(y,x) is the cumulative fraction by weight of particles which fall below size y when particles of size x are broken. The constants i, j, k contain shape factors and densities of flaws leading to propagating fracture surfaces. The authors believe this equation to be incorrect. Klimpel and usttin' give where r~ is the number of fracture planes originating from edge flaws (per L where L is the edge length of the original particle), rs is the number of fracture planes originating from flaws on the particle surface (per S where S is the surface of the original particle) and rv is the number of fracture planes originating from flaws within the particle volume. This equation is also incorrect. The failures of these equations will be demonstrated by deriving intuitively correct expressions for simple cases and showing that the Eqs. 1 and 2 do not reduce to the correct answer. In this process, the flaws in statistical reasoning inherent in the derivations of Eqs. 1 and 2 become apparent. THE KLIMPEL-AUSTIN EQUATION Eq. 2 was derived by considering a set number of fracture planes occurring spatially at random within a given particle. This case will be treated here in its simplest form: a line with 1, 2, 3, etc., fractures occurring at random. This is illustrated in Fig. 1, with the original length of the line as Vo. The breakage of a long, thin, brittle fiber is a corresponding physical case, with the volume of a fragment proportional to its length. Assuming independence of the occurrence of the fractures, the probability of any one fracture occurring in length dV is dV/V0. IN 1945-1946, the author measured temper brittle-ness in ingots of varying composition prepared by remelting SAE 3135 bar stock under vacuum. Since other investigators1-" have been referring to this hitherto unpublished work, belated publication seems worthwhile. Steel in 7 lb batches&apos; was induction melted with nickel additions in a magnesia crucible under a pressure of 10 microns of Hg or less and cast into a 2 in. diam chill mold. The compositions of ingots A, B, and C prepared in this way are shown in Table I; the vacuum melting lowered carbon, manganese, sulphur, and nitrogen content. Ingot B was homogenized 24 hr at 1095°C; ingots A and C were not homogenized. Blanks, M in. square, were cut from each ingot, austenitized 1 hr at 870°C, water quenched, tempered 1 hr at 595"C, and water quenched. Half the blanks from each ingot were given an embrittling treatment of 50 hr at 455°C and water quenched. A few specimens, embrittled and unembrittled, were finally heated 1 hr at 580°C and water quenched. Charpy specimens machined from the blanks were V-notched on the side closest to ingot mid-radius and paired as to radial position in the ingot, one of each pair having received the embrittling treatment and the other not. Specimens were broken in a standard impact machine at various temperatures, the same temperature, in general, being used for both bars of a pair. Fig. 1 shows the results. It is evident that temper brittleness, as measured by the increase in temperature of transition from brittle to tough failure introduced by the 455°C treatment, was decreased but not eliminated by reducing carbon to 0.006 pct, manganese to < 0.004 pct, and nitrogen to 0.001 pct. In another study," temper brittleness was apparently eliminated by -reducing carbon to 0.003 pct, with 0.80 pct Mn and 0.0015 pct N (ingot D)." • Analyses given for carbon below 0.02 pct were made by Jensen method; for nitrogen, by Kjehldahl method. Values quoted else-where&apos;-&apos;." for carbon content of ingot C and for nitrogen content of ingot D were obtained by conventional combustlon and by vacuum fusion methods, respectively, and are considered much less accurate. The 580°C final treatment removed previous em-brittlement (ingot B particularly), indicating that this was "reversible embrittlement."" Metallographic examination of ingot C with 1 pct nital etch revealed only ferrite; ingot A had carbide spheroids uniformly distributed in a ferrite matrix. With ethereal picric acid plus zephiran chloride etchant.&apos; no differences between embrittled and un- embrittled specimens of ingots A, B, or C were noted. Fracture of C and D below the transition temperature was predominantly transcrystalline, with traces of intercrystalline, in both embrittled and unembrittled conditions. The corresponding fracture of unembrittled B was mixed transcrystalline and intercrystalline; of embrittled B, predominantly intercrystalline with some transcrystalline areas. . . . A combination of two factors in addition to the current Federal drilling and price regulations reduced by 120 from I942 the number of new wells completed in southwestern Pennsylvania during the year. No new prospective area was found comparable to the Armbrust gas pool, Westmoreland Co., which accounted for a seventh of the last year&apos;s drilling, and it is considered doubtful whether, even if such a field had been discovered, the drilling contractors, who have been seriously affected by the manpower shortage, could have drilled many more wells than they did during the year. New wells totaling 445 were completed for a combined footage of over 1,250,000 Dry holes numbered 131 and had a footage of nearly 400,000. Old wells drilled deeper total 55, of which 17 were found nonproductive. Shallow Development Oil Oil completions yielded an initial of only slightly over one hundred barrels from 21 wells for about the same per well average as that of a year ago. However, 65 bbl. of this total came from two wells in two new strikes. The footage drilled of nearly 33,000 gives an average of nearly I00 ft. less per well than a year ago. Two old wells drilled deeper had a combined initial of only 4 bbl. The largest oil well of the year, 40 bbl., was found in the Speechley (U. Dev.) sand at a depth of 3492 ft. in German township, Fayette County. The location is several miles east of the nearest oil production hut as the area that could be occupied by a pool is fairly well delimited by drilling, the extent of this production would not appear to be large. The other notable oil production was found in the Dunkard (Penna.) sand, Cumberland township, Greene County, at a depth of 1065 ft. Here the first well had an initial of g bbl. and the second 25 bbl. However, a third proved dry, and as this area is also delimited by drilling, the pool doubtless will be of small area. Gas Gas completions yielded an initial of slightly over one hundred million cubic feet per day and new wells, totaling 303, account for all but four million of this volume. Old wells drilled deeper, numbering 35, found gas. The per well average in new drilling of approximately 320 M cu. ft. is nearly 165 M cu. ft. less than a year ago and the total footage is slightly over 830,000, which is about a quarter of a million feet less than in 1942. Average rock pressure of new completions is approximately 365 lb. per sq. in. The entire volume of new production is from the Upper Devonian or higher stratigraphic horizons. In Allegheny County, the grestest activity was in Forward and Plum townships. Wells there account for more than one half the completions. One large well was drilled in Forward township and an open flow of 3.623 million cubic feet was found in an old Gantz (U. Dev.) sand area. The top of the sand was encountered

During 1942, production of oil in Kentucky reached a total of 4,169,163 bbl. of which 1,807,809 bbl. came from eastern Kentucky. This was more than a million barrels less than in 1941, owing partly to the low price of crude oil, which almost eliminated wildcatting, and partly to spacing regulations, which limited the number of wells drilled in small, shallow pools where the pressures are not sufficient to maintain maximum recovery in widely spaced wells. In eastern Kentucky much of the oil was produced from outliers of the Mauch Chunk series at the disconformable contact of the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian. Although wells producing from this horizon, known as the Maxon, are sprinkled over the entire area, the greatest concentrations are in Martin, Floyd, Knott and Pike Counties. A new 30 to 40-bbl. well has been completed in this formation in ,Pike County, where the carbon ratio is so high that ordinarily oil would not be expected. Pike County is one of the largest producers of Maxon gas, and the offset well to this oil well produced gas. Of the 412 gas wells drilled in Pike County, 12.2 per cent produced gas from the Maxon horizon. During 1942, the old Menifee " Cornif-erous" field, the Mariba-Denniston field, was redrilled between old wells, and although it did not produce any large amount of oil it did contribute 2018 bbl. In the oldest oil field in eastern Kentucky, the Ragland pool, operators are cleaning out abandoned wells and are using this oil for fuel oil. There is a possibility that some of this may be used in the future as distilled fuel oil. Eight wells were completed in 1942 in the Jackson County gas field. The development of Jackson County, which was started in 1934 and in which commercial quantities of gas were encountered at a depth of 1100 to 1200 ft., has become of importance in 1942 with the completion of eight wells, making a total of 24 commercial producing wells with an average rock pressure of 140 lb. At this time the gas is not being marketed. In the last year it has been found that these wells, which produce from the Niagaran dolomite ("Cornif-erous"), respond to acidizing and the production has been thus greatly increased. There has been less development in Estill and Lee Counties than for several years. Two wells were drilled in Greenup County, one of which had a show of oil in the Berea sandstone. One deep test, drilled by the Owens-Libbey-Owens Co. in Lawrence County, was dry. This well was drilled to a depth of 4975 ft. into the top of the Clinton shale sequence. Of the 202 wells completed in Floyd, Martin, Knott and Pike Counties, 187 were gas wells, 3 oil wells and 12 dry holes. In Floyd County 66 per cent of the gas production was from the Devonian-Mis-sissippian black shales, 53 per cent in Martin, 79 per cent in Knott and 65 per cent in Pike. This is probably the largest continuous gas field east of the Mississippi

The Circuitron herein described applies current from the classifier motor circuit and energy from the sound of grinding media to move an oscillating disc. The disc through a photoelectric cell controls the speed of the ore feeder and consequently the amount of ore delivered to the mill. THE Telluride Mines, Inc. at Telluride, Colo., is operating a flotation concentrator recovering lead, zinc, and copper with some gold and silver. The nominal capacity is 500 tons per 24 hr. The ore, which comes from several different mines, is characteristic of the district, changing from extremely tough rhodonite to soft gouge. The ore is crushed and washed, recrushed, and delivered to the mill bin at about % in. to serve as ball mill feed. Details of Grinding Circuit The material from the fine-ore bin is carried over a belt feeder driven by a Reeves vari-speed device. The belt discharges to a No. 86 Marcy ball mill, which operates in closed circuit, with jigs and a 6-ft Dorr classifier. A Massco density controller holds the density of the classifier overflow at a predetermined point. The overflow, which contains about 5 pct + 48 mesh, goes to the flotation section. Manual Operation Before the adoption of automatic control for the grinding circuit, this work was all done manually by the operator. The bin gate was set to deliver 40 to 50 lb of ore per lineal foot of belt, and the speed of the belt was adjusted by the operator to deliver at the rate of about 500 tons per 24 hr. As the ore changed in hardness, specific gravity, or in the amount of moisture, or, as the size of the feed changed due to bin segregation, crusher setting, or other causes, the operator made corresponding changes in the rate of feed by manipulation of the Reeves control. Sometimes these changes occurred so rapidly that they caused sharp, pronounced surges, which created very considerable unbalance from normal conditions in the grinding circuit and, more critically, in the flotation section. Since it is not possible for the operator to anticipate or follow such changes closely, a very considerable unbalance from normal conditions may occur, which will require a drastic change in the rate of feed. These surges upset the fineness of grind and interfere radically with the balance between tonnage and reagent control. All of this tends to reduce the grade of concentrates, increase the loss in the tailing, and thus decrease the recovery of values. The Circuitron Some years ago, The Mine and Smelter Supply Co., in conjunction with the operators at the Telluride Mill, undertook to build a device that would give close control of the rate of feed from the ore bin and to coordinate with this a related device that would regulate the amount of sand load on the classifier rakes. Emphasis was strongly laid on the fact that such a control must apply to the entire grinding circuit and must include the feed to the ball mill, the classifier sand return, and the density of the classifier overflow. If this could be done successfully, we felt that the circuit could be operated under best possible conditions, with compensations
