IF you do not make the disc at the same time as the core and as part of it, it is necessary to make it by itself. This is done by spreading on a board or other flat surface a layer of clay as thick and wide as [88] the disc that you made at the feeding head of the first pattern of the gun. When it is dry, mark it exactly with compasses and then, cutting with a chisel or rasp, make it fit exactly into the empty space at the head. Likewise, make a hole just as wide as the thickness of the core exactly in the middle of this clay disc. When you have put the disc in its place in the mould and then pass the core through this hole, it passes exactly through the center of the mould in such a way that it meets the iron ring that you put at the foot of the mould for this purpose. THE other day, I fell into conversation with two gentlemen who desired to improve the condition of the people; so that the talk was semi-political. They seemed to agree that I was inclined to be "con-servative," "reactionary," perhaps an "evolutionist," looking upon "reform" with suspicion. Finally I rejoined somewhat in this manner: "You attach to me phrases that I have heard all my life but which convey no meaning to me. It is quite true that I do not make a fetish of terms like reform, liberty, democracy and so forth; neither do I worship the idea that `things are good enough as they are,' `leave well enough. alone' and so forth. There is more satisfaction in building something up than in tearing something down, or in just maintaining something that is already built. Progress is a popular word; but what is progress? In my opinion it is comprised, so far as public welfare is concerned, of two elements: Improvements in production of goods and knowledge; improvements in keeping order." This substitute for politics, economics, reform, pro-gress, conservatism, radicalism, democracy, socialism, monarchism and all the phrases of public welfare may seem over-simple; perhaps it is, but at least it defines something. It seems to me to be at least worth attention.

(written discussion *).-The writer's conclusions with reference to the possibility of finding commercial deposits of petroleum in Brazil were published in 1908 in the Final Report of the Coal Commission of Brazil.1 Since this volume is not generally accessible, and the author has nothing to acid thereto, the following quotation found on pages 243-7 may prove of interest: The Possibility of Petroleum Deposits in Brazil "The writer has often been asked to express an opinion as to the possibility of finding petroleum in commercial quantity in Brazil. "The question is one that does not admit of an adequate answer except for the regions visited by the writer, which as already stated, include only, a portion of that great territory, and only the southern portion of Brazil; namely, the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catharina, Paraná, and a few rapid excursions across São Paulo, and Minas Geraes, as well as the brief visit to Marahú in Bahia. "That the sedimentary beds of the Brazilian Permian once held some petroleum is attested by the evidence of the Iraty black shale which gives off the characteristic odor of this substance from São Paulo to Rio Grande do Sul.

What do you think are the major problems that the mining industry is facing? While I don't have any intensive knowledge of the various problems that plague our industry, I know that they are all part and parcel of a more complex and fundamental question: What must we do to make mineral extraction successful, safe, and profitable? Obviously, as mining people, we must continue to expand our technical know-how and to make better use of it. In today's context, however, that is not enough. We must also improve the "public image" of the mining industry. Why? Because the key word in the term "public image" is: the public. Many people in our country and in Congress, for instance, are against strip mining-and some are even against underground mining. Pressures from the public, from voters, have affected past, present, and new legislation. And government controls can be a major problem in any industry, let alone mining. At first, people ask government to intervene, act, or resolve problems, even in management and labor contract negotiations. But later, after Washington gets involved, there are clashes between departments and personalities, and eventually there is resentment against the interference with mining operations or our daily lives.

Mining is both exciting and rewarding-although at times somewhat frustrating-and we all can have real pride in our industry, in its people, and in its accomplishments. It is, however, with concern that I have noted a deterioration in this Country in what might be called mining's stature and in the growth of a belief in many quarters that our mineral reserves are rapidly approaching exhaustion. In other words, there is a popular image that we are fast becoming a "have not" nation in many respects and that the domestic mining industry can no longer be considered, in the vernacular of Wall Street, to offer much in the way of "growth potential." I do not subscribe to this hypothesis, nor do I believe that the record of the mining industry bears this out. However, let me add that we can, in time, talk ourselves into this frame of mind and we can hasten the day when this very well might come about by unnecessary and unwise legislation or regulation. My remarks today are basically designed to give my reasons for refuting this negative philosophy and to review our record. With your help, I know we can improve our image, and the public's recognition of our industry's peculiar problems.

GEOLOGICAL studies have revealed the occurrence of hundreds of pegmatite dikes in north- east Brazil, Fig. 1, in the three states of Rio Grande do Norte, Paraiba, and Ceara. Heretofore data have not been available on the possible production of lithium minerals from these areas, and in March, April, and May 1953 the author undertook a reconnaissance survey covering a cross-section of the pegmatites. Sixty-one pegmatites were examined. The pegmatites of Rio Grande do Norte and Paraiba are located in an arid region (Seratao), and except in the most southerly portion there is a mini- mum of vegetation and overburden. The region is easily prospected and relatively accessible by jeep or truck. The pegmatites examined in Ceara are in an area of lush vegetation along the flanks of the Jaqueribe River valley. It is therefore more difficult to prospect, and the dirt roads, as a means of access, leave much to be desired. For all practical purposes rail transportation, except in Ceara, is not available. The rocks of the area1-4 are composed of Pre-Cambrian schist, gneiss, quartzite, and marbles. They have been intruded by granites, monzonites, and diorites and cut by quartz veins and pegmatites.

The Y-Al- C ternary phase diagram for the com -position range from 55 to 100 at. pct Y and for a temperature of 950°C has been constructed from metallographic and X-ray diffraction data. The significant features of the isothermal section which is presented are the small solubility of aluminum in the binary Y3C phase and the presence of a ternary carbide phase with a small homogeneity range around the composition Y3AlC. The similarity in structure and composition between these two carbide phases is discussed in the light of the misci-bility gap which exists between room temperature and 1300°C, which was the temperature range studied. THE occurrence and stability criteria of ternary T3BC, carbide phases having the L'12 structure and the general formula T3BCx have been discussed in detail by stadelmaier1 and more recently by the present authors., Stadelmaier found many representatives of these phases formed between the T metals Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni and the B metals Mg, Al, Zn, Ca, Ge, Cd, In, Sn, Hg, T1, and Pb. The present authors reported on a new series of iso-structural carbide phases formed between the T metals of the Sc group and the B metal, aluminum. These new phases are unique in that many of the Sc group elements form stable binary carbide phases which occur about the composition T3C and which crystallize with a structure similar to that of the T9BCx ternary carbide phases. Furthermore, these binary and ternary phases are found to coexist in equilibrium with each other. The similarity in structure and composition between, for example, Y3C and Y3AlC in the light of the mis-cibility gap which had been found to exist between these two phases indicated a need for a more thorough knowledge of the phase relations which occur in alloys based upon these compositions. Consequently, an investigation of the phase equilibria in the yttrium-rich portion of the Y-A1-C phase diagram was undertaken. The limiting Y-A1 binary diagram determined by Lundin and Klodt3 and the results of Spedding et al.4 governing the Y3C phase were used as guides in , constructing the diagram. EXPERIMENTAL Alloys weighing about 10 g were prepared by arc-melting powder compacts made from the various components on a water-cooled copper hearth using a tungsten electrode in a gettered argon atmosphere. Good homogeneity was obtained by melting the alloys three times. The purity of the yttrium used was 99.9 pct (0.07 pct rare earths). The purity of the aluminum and the carbon was 99.99 pct. The results of chemical analysis on five representative alloys showed that losses during the alloying process were predominantly carbon losses and that in no instance did the measured concentration of this component differ by more than 3 at. pct from the intended composition. For this reason the alloy compositions which are reported are those of the charges prepared for melting. Three alloys which were analyzed for copper, tungsten, nitrogen, and oxygen compositions showed that no contamination had occurred either during casting or during the subsequent annealing treatments. LouisiaNa ranks fifth among the oil-producing states. In 1941 the state-wide production was slightly in excess of 118,000,000 bbl. of crude oil and conden-sate—an increase of 15,000,000 bbl. over the total production for the year 1940. During 1941, south Louisiana produced approximately 90,900,000 bbl. of oil, while north Louisiana produced approximately 27,000,000. South Louisiana, therefore, produced about 3¼ times more oil than north Louisiana. During the past year, 574,800,000 M cu. ft. of natural and casinghead gas were produced in Louisiana; thus 1941 gas production exceeded the 1940 production by 104,900,000 M cu. feet. Completion records for the year 1941 show that 1512 wells were completed in or adjoining producing fields. These wells, which were drilled to extend known producing areas or were located within producing areas, are not considered as wildcat wells. Of the total number of field wells drilled, 1152 wells found production; the remaining 360 were junked or dry and abandoned. This means that 76 per cent of the wells drilled were successful. Considering the precarious nature of oil-field development, this percentage of new producing wells is exceedingly satisfactory. Of the total number of field welis com-pleted as producers, approximately 86 wells found new and distinct producing sands. During the past year, 30 new fields were found. Four parishes—namely, Caldwell, Catahoula, Orleans, and Natchitoches— entered the ranks of oil-and-gas-producing parishes in the state during that period. This brings the total number of oil-and-gas-producing parishes in the state up to 48. Thus, 75 per cent of the parishes in Louisiana now contain one or more oil and/or gas fields. Although sufficient data are not available to list the addition reserves found in Louisiana during 1941, it is felt that such reserves undoubtedly exceed twice the total production for that year, or at least 200 million barrels. In reserves, therefore, Louisiana ranks third among the various oil-producing states. South Louisiana Although 16 new fields were found in south Louisiana, the outstanding developments in that part of the state were not limited to new discoveries. In fact, most of the increase in reserve in that area has been most consistently accumulated through extensions of known producing sands and through the finding of new sands in already productive fields, especially at depths below the presently producing sands. Since data concerning most of the new extensions and sands are too extensive for discussion here, the more important developments arc briefly outlined below: Abbeville, Vermilion Parish.—Production extended ½ mile to the west. Anse La Butte, St. Martin Parish.—New oil sand discovered at 9400 ft., thus extending production to east flank. West flank defined by dry holes. THE liquidus line on the phase diagram for temperature versus composition of a binary alloy system, representing the boundary between the homogeneous melt and the heterogeneous melt plus solid, besides showing the minimum casting temperature, is useful in determining eutectic compositions and the presence of phase changes such as peritectic transformations and intermetallic compound formation. The liquidus often is determined by the cooling curves of thermal analysis, but supercooling frequently occurs, so that the temperature values are low. An alternative method, the one employed here, consists of determining the com- position of samples of the melts from heterogeneous alloys that are at equilibrium. With meticulous attention to fundamentals, this method is capable of yielding values limited in precision only by the temperature control and measurement and analyses. APPARATUS By starting, on the one hand, with a supersaturated solution and allowing the excess solute to precipitate, and on the other hand with an undersaturated solution and allowing more of the solute to be dissolved, both processes being carried out at the same temperature, equilibrium may be said to have been approached from both directions; that is, from above and from below. If the analyses show the solutions to contain the same fraction of solute when equilibrium has been approached from above and from below, one is assured that equilibrium has been reached in both determinations. In order to carry out such determinations, it is necessary to have equipment for obtaining and maintaining the proper temperatures; for holding the melt, measuring its temperature, and stirring, sampling and analyzing it. The present work required temperatures from 420° to 900°C. The equipment consisted of: A furnace, which was a vertical alundum tube, 1 ¾ in. diameter inside and 18 in. long, wound with Nichrome resistance wire, surrounded by a 3-in. i.d. alundum tube wound for 5 in. of length near each end, for compensation of end losses. This muffle was contained in an iron shell with Transite end plates, the intervening space being packed with Sil-O-Cel. The outside dimensions of the furnace were 12 in. in diameter by 18 ½ in. in height. Heating current was supplied by three independent variable-voltage transformers (Variac), one connected to each end compensator winding and manually controlled, and one connected to the main winding through a series resistance of 5 ohms. The mechanical properties of magnesium-alloy castings are greatly improved by grain refinement, and at present considerable attention is being paid to methods of obtaining fine-grained castings. One method of achieving this end is the use of proper melting and superheating techniques. These have been employed com-rnercially to a great extent, but no comprehensive study of the subject appears to have been published at present. Numerous investigations found in the literature include some reference to superheating techniques,1"4 and Achenbach, Nippcr and Piwowarsky,% ased principally on thermal analysis, ascribe the grain-refilling action of superheating to the influence of solid foreign particles or dissolved gases present in the melt upon the course of crystallization. The primary purpose of this paper is to present the principal facts concerning the cffect of superheating on grain size of magilesium alloys. .ittempts are also made to explain the experimental results in terms of a general hypothesis. The investigations are limited chiefly to common commercial casting alloys. In order to carry on this work, it was necessary to determine the factors influencing grain size and to develop a proper technique for the preparation of samples. Thc preliminary tests made by the author indicated that the grain size of magnesium alloys resulting from the solidification of a melt is determined by alloy composition, presence of impurities, rate of cooling during solidification, thermal history of the melt and to some extent the structure of the charge used. The rate of cooling is in turn dependent upon the mass of the melt, pouring temperature, and dimensions, properties and temperature of the mold into which the melt is poured. The final grain size of the alloys is still further modified by heat-treatment subsequent to casting. It is not within the scope of the present paper to discuss all of these factors, and it would suffice to note here that when equal amounts of magnesium alloys are prepared from the same alloying materials, melted in graphite crucibles under the same thermal conditions, then cast into graphite molds at a constant temperature, the resultant solids have the same grain size. By maintaining all other factors constant, it is thus possible to vary thermal conditions of a melt and to examine the grain size of resultant castings. For a number of years European investigators have used laboratory methods of predicting the probable strength of coke made from coal, and recently several investigators in the United States have reported the use of various tests for this purpose. There is at present no method accepted as standard, however, nor is there even agreement as to the general type of test that should be used. Furthermore, because the details of most of the tests have not been worked out carefully, one investigator can not hope to duplicate the work of another. The extension of coke manufacture to new localities in the United States, and the increasing need for cokes of exceptional qualities made from the most economical mixtures, made it desirable to have some simple laboratory test which will determine whether given coals, alone or blended with other coals, are more satisfactory from the standpoint of coke strenpth- than others of different cost. The work described herein has resulted in the development of a simple laboratory test which, it is believed, can be generally adopted in coal laborat,ories, and which will give concordant results even though performed by different investigators in different laboratories. The general method of predicting whether a coal or a mixture of coals will produce a strong coke, resistant to crushing and shattering, has been to correlate the known strengths of the cokes produced in commercial ovens with some measurable constituent or with some property of the coals, and then to use the relationship so found for forming an estimate of the coking strengths of coals unknown. Several such correlations have utilized the percentages of the various ultimate constituents of coal, such as the oxygen content and the hydrogen-oxygen ratio;(39)§ other correlations have involved the proportion of a, B and r com-pounds, (17,21,30c) or of "oil and solid bitumens."(16,30) Also a relationship has been traced between the coking properties of coal and the rate of change of the resistance offered to the flow of an inert gas by fine particles of the coal while being slowly heated. It has been said that "the command of nature has been put into the hands of man before he knows how to command himself," and what we see about us gives particular emphasis to this observation. If this condition be granted, the vaunted boast of school and college, of the institution that had the training of this generation, and of its fathers, and of its grandfathers, the boast that education is a "preparation for life," stands exposed as a hollow claim, or as a ghastly, cynical conception of life, or else education has fallen far short of its intentions. It has been evident for some time that education was not meeting the fullest expectations of society. In recent years there has been a deal of speculation indulged in by both laity and faculty in regard to American education and American civilization, and some few and sporadic changes have been effected. Today, however, there is no longer time for mere hypothetical considerations; we are faced with certain definite facts and confronted with obvious conditions that will not wait for fine-spun theories. If educators do not put their house in order, someone else will do it for them. The trends in mineral industries education must be in harmony with this general realignment that is today visible on the educational horizon, and only as these trends are in conformity with this movement can they be called sound. Two questions, then, confront mineral industries educators: (1) What are the trends in mineral industries education, and (2) how do these trends correlate with the major educational movements of the day? Scope or Mineral Industries Education Before launching into these particulars, it might be well to define the scope of mineral industries education and to consider its present position. Mineral industries education embraces three main types of work: 1. Earth Sciences and Geography.—Geology, mineralogy, geography— courses basic to all mineral industries and to the humanities. 2. Mineral Engineering.—Mining, petroleum and natural gas—dealing with mineral producing industries. Application of earth sciences and all types of engineering to exploitation of natural mineral resources.

As THE years go by, names of distinguished metallurgists will be added to the list of Henry Marion Howe lecturers, and now and then an illustrious one, for to be chosen to deliver the Howe lecture will be, I do not hesitate to predict, a highly coveted honor. I pray, therefore, your indulgence, if I confess to a feeling of gratification in having been appointed the first of these lecturers. It does not follow, however, that I am losing all sense of proportion and that I have an exaggerated idea of the little I have been able to contribute to our knowledge of iron and steel. Indeed, I fully realize how small were my claims to so great a distinction. I realize, also, that those entrusted with the task of selecting a lecturer were actuated, in coming to a decision, by their knowledge of the long and intimate friendship that had existed between the leader we have lost and myself. For their generous impulse, I thank them from the bottom of my heart; and with becoming modesty, I take up my task as the first Henry Marion Howe lecturer. It would be pleasant and indeed most appropriate to devote this entire lecture to a eulogy of Henry Marion Howe and his work, but how short the time for so large an undertaking and how inadequate my qualifications! On Aug. 28, Sept. 4, 11, and 18, 1875, a series of articles appeared in the Engineering & Mining Journal entitled "What is Steel?" With one exception, these constitute the first professional paper of Henry Marion Howe. That was nearly fifty years ago, three years after graduating from Harvard University. He was then but twenty-seven years old and already his keenly inquisitive mind was actively at work. There is a touch of romance in this young metallurgist who, on entering his. scientific career, destined to be so brilliant and so fruitful, on the very threshold of it, seems to have selected as his motto "What is Steel?" Like a knight-errant of science, he started on his quest for an answer to that question, a quest which was to last forty-seven years and which death only brought to an end. And while thus engaged how many wonderful messages we received from him, each one bringing us nearer to the goal! How illuminating, inspiring and encouraging were those messages! The time is no longer when a man can act as an independent unit; the appreciation of the interdependence of one man upon another has emphasized the importance of the social unit. Epidemics have made us recognize that even a man's health is not distinctly his own to control as he pleases. The physical examination of workmen previous to employment started with an effort to prevent the spread of tuberculosis, for tuberculosis may be detected in its early stages and cured. But it was soon found that many other diseases were detected and the saving of lives made possible. The physical examination does not mean the elimination of the unfit—on that basis it would utterly fail—but rather the measuring of a man's physical fitness and placing the man where he can do the best for himself, his fellow worker, and the company. Industry as a whole cannot expect to live up to the standard of physical examination set for the army, nor should it expect to do so, for in all branches of industry there are types of work that do not require the same amount of endurance as does army work, and the lacing of men with physical limitations in the work for which they are capable permits a higher average of physical fitness for the work requiring physical excellence. Objects of Physical Examination The objects of physical examination are: The early detection of illness, particularly at a time when a full restoration of health is possible; the protection of employees from infection caused by working in contact with contagious diseases; the discovery of a man's physical limitations, in so far as his possibility for rendering good service is concerned; assistance to the safety movement by eliminating association in hazardous occupations with men whose physical condition renders them likely to accident to themselves and others; and the lessening of time lost by sickness. Statistics issued by the United States Department of Labor show that 22.54 per cent. of idleness is caused by sickness, with an average number of 7.71 weeks idle; whereas only 1.66 per cent. is caused by acci-

Today, a dozen or more universities and colleges in the United States are offering curricula designed for the specialized training of engineering students who plan to enter the petroleum industry. Many hundreds of students are following these curricula in their academic preparation, with the expectation that by so doing they will be better equipped to enter the petroleum industry in an engineering capacity than their competitors that seek to do likewise with training of less specialized character. Those who have helped plan and develop these curricula believe that such specialization should and does afford the student a superior preparation for his task. Others have questioned this and urge a broad preparation in fundamentals without specialization. Still others are suggesting even greater specialization than present petroleum engineering curricula afford. Some would have the student first prepare himself in one of the more general divisions of engineering, such as civil, mechanical or electrical engineering, and then seek some degree of specialized preparation in a graduate program. Which of these views is correct; or, if there is merit in each, which plan offers the greater advantage to the student? It is time that we paused to take stock of our objectives and of our way of attaining them. Is the training received by our petroleum engineering students what it should be? To what extent is the product of our petroleum engineering schools meeting the requirements of the industry? How may graduates be better equipped for the work they are called upon to do? These are questions that educators interested in the training of petroleum engineering students are ever asking. They must depend upon engineers and executives engaged directly in the industry for advice and helpful suggestions in better planning the training to be offered to our future engineers. This paper will have served its purpose if it is successful in focusing attention of men active in the industry on some of these educational problems, to the end that the ideas of men close to the needs of the industry may be made known to those who have responsibility in the control of our educational programs.
