FINE IRON ORES, and concentrates such as those produced from taconite, must be converted to lump form by some process of agglomeration before they can be used effectively in the blast furnace or open hearth. At the present time, four major processes for agglomerating these materials are being used on a commercial scale: sintering, nodulizing, pelletizing and briquetting. IN 1945 U. S. Steel Corp. through its subsidiary the Oliver Iron Mining Div., drew up tentative plans for an agglomerating plant on the Mesabi Range which would include a nodulizing kiln and a sintering machine. The purpose of the plant was two- fold: during its initial operation it would provide data on agglomeration of high grade ore fines, and would help relieve the shortage of ore for open hearth charging. Subsequently, it would be available for agglomerating taconite concentrates. While operating on fines screened from direct ore, it was planned to develop techniques and personnel so that a workable plant would be ready to handle taconite concentrates when the time came.

The tensile behavior of copper foils prepared from rolled bulk material has been studied over the thickness range 2 to 53 , and for a range of pain sizes. For foils of comparable grain size, having the cube texture and tested along (100), yield strength increases with decreasing foil thickness t below -26p, with a corresponding decrease in ductility. Deformation occurs in the form of localized slip clusters distributed throughout the gage section. To the extent that the tensile strength (10 to 18 kg mm-) is unaffected by foil thickness, and that the foils possess fair ductility, the stress-strain behavior resembles that of bulk material rather than that of whiskers or evaporated films of comparable dimensions. The dependence of yield strength o on foil thickness t below -26p is of the form: oy = oo + kt-1/2. Possible explanations for the stress increase are considered based on 1) the dependence of active dislocation source length on foil dimensions, 2) the locking of surface sources, or the blocking of mobile sources at the surface due to surface film. It is now well-established that filamentary whiskers of many materials show exceptionally high strength compared with bulk crystals.'-11 As the diameter of the whiskers decreases to -1, the observed fracture strength approaches, and in certain cases exceeds, the calculated shear stress for the nucleation of slip in a perfect crystal.' In general, the stress-strain curve is entirely elastic, with strains at fracture approaching 1 pct. Similarly, thin films12-24 of evaporated or electrodeposi-ted material have been shown to possess tensile strengths three to seven times that of bulk material, with total strains at fracture -1 to 2 pct. In the present study, attention has been directed to the room-temperature tensile behavior of thin foils of copper over the thickness range 2 to 53, prepared from rolled bulk material. Yield stress, ultimate tensile strength, elongation to fracture, and work-hardening behavior are measured as a function of grain size and foil thickness. Structurally such foils are superior to either evaporated or electrodeposited films, and in the recrystallized condition exhibit considerable ductility. Apart from preliminary work by Sumino and Yamamoto25 on the work-hardening behavior of rolled and recrystallized copper foils, no systematic tensile studies have been carried out on material of this form. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Tensile specimens were prepared from 99.995 pct purity rolled copper foils of thickness 2, 6, 12, 26, and 53, obtained from the Hamilton Watch Co., Lancaster, Pa. Irrespective of specimen shape, it is necessary to use tensile foils with edges free from notches or tears. To this end, any form of cutting operation was excluded, and the tensile foils prepared using a photoengraving process, the details of which are described elsewhere.26 Since tensile data are required under conditions of uni-axial stress, the specimen shape is extremely important. Ideally, the foil should be infinitely long, allowing a gradual taper from the grip area to the gage section; however, from a practical standpoint, long foils are easily damaged during testing. A modified tensile specimen was therefore selected having a parallel gage section 1.25 by 0.20 in. with a tapered shoulder section increasing to 0.5 in. at the grips, and an over-all length between grips of 4 in., Fig. 1. In practically all tests, these foils fractured within the parallel gage section. THE use of magnesium as an alloying element in aluminum alloys has been limited, in general, to comparatively small quantities. In duralumin-type, strong-aluminum alloys, magnesium is present to the extent of ½ to ¾ per cent. and various grades of Magnalite and the "Y" alloy of the National Physical Laboratory of England contain up to 1 1/2 per cent. In this country small quantities of aluminum alloy sheet containing 4 per cent. magnesium are produced commercially. All commercial aluminum contains sufficient silicon to convert a portion of the magnesium added to the compound Mg2Si. It is well known that the solubility of both magnesium and magnesium-silicide decrease with decrease in temperature. It is, therefore, impossible to separate the age-hardening effect of the magnesium-silicide from that of magnesium, except by the use of aluminum of such high purity that the silicon content is negligible. The present paper is the fifth1, 2,3,4 of a series from the laboratories of the Aluminum Co. of America reporting the results of investigations of the equilibrium relations in aluminum-rich alloys made from the high purity aluminum manufactured by this company .5

THE manufacture of nickel-clad steel plate and the fabrication of articles from it has progressed far enough to permit a general description of the working methods used. The manufacture of sheets made up of layers of nickel and steel is not new as a sheet of this character was patented in Germany in 1893. Present development differs mainly in the size and finish of the product. The earlier light-gage highly finished products have been limited in their application due to their similarity, in certain respects, to electro-plated and highly finished alloy sheets. The new product is a relatively heavy plate 1/4 or 3/s in. thick and heavier, with one side coated with nickel, the weight of nickel being of the order of 10 per cent of the whole. The finish is that of hot-rolled steel plate.

Hydraulic fracturing methods for production stimulation have become a common procedure in the oil and gas industry. Fracturing treatments are performed on wells of various potentials to help increase the production rate. In addition to the desire for increased production is the need to predict what increase might be expected. This knowledge is useful in economical treatment planning to accomplish the desired production goals for the well. Theoretical production increases due to horizontal radial fractures may be calculated using equations developed from mathematical analyses and electrical models.1,2,6 It also is possible to predict theoretical production increases due to vertical fractures using curves developed from electrical3 and mathematical models.8 However, these studies assumed that the vertical fracture height and the formation height were equal, which may not be true." In addition, the final fracture height through which fluid is produced may not be equal to the created height. The development of vertical fracture proppant transport relationships has made unrealistic the assumption that propped fracture height is equal to created fracture height. Through the use of published proppant transport equations,4'12 it is possible to calculate the height of a bed of propping agent deposited in a fracture of a given height. Assuming that the fluid flowing in the fracture moves through only the propped portion of that fracture (i.e., that the un-propped part of the fracture heals) it becomes essential to know how production increase varies with the ratio of propped fracture height to formation height. It should be recognized that future investigation may determine that the fracture does not heal completely and that a highly permeable channel exists over the deposited bed of proppant. The effect of this channel was not considered for the present study. The following analysis of experimental data allowed development of curves to determine theoretical production increases considering fracture height as a variable. Discussion In designing a fracturing stimulation treatment a number of variables must be considered. The size of the treatment, type of proppant used, proppant concentration, treatment fluid properties and well conditions are all factors affecting the dimensions and permeability of the fracture. Production increase due to a vertical fracture is affected by propped length, height, width and permeability of the fracture for a given set of formation conditions. NOW that analytical chemistry has gone so far to debunk early misconceptions about minerals, the fact that the light of exact knowledge still fails to illuminate many dark corners is often overlooked. By combining the skills of the physicist with those of a chemist, the identification of minerals has become an exact science and the presence of even minute traces of impurities and extraneous elements is readily revealed by spectrographic means, Granted that we can learn all there is to know about the composition of a substance and even about its physical propertied (which latter assumption is somewhat far-reaching) it still does not follow that we clearly understood its commercial designation or utility.

The paper of Gifkins and Snowden considers the interesting but difficult problem of determining the stress dependence of secondary (steady-state) creep at low stresses. These authors have concluded that at stresses below 250 psi (2 x 107 dynes per sq cm) the secondary creep rate of lead is proportional to the stress (viscous creep) and is not proportional to the stress raised to about a fifth power. The experimental data considered by them were obtained on tests conducted at room temperature and at 50°C. The lowest stress employed was 50 psi (3.5 X 106 dynes per sq cm). The authors pointed out the main difficulty in determining the stress dependence of creep at low stresses. The creep tests must be run for very long lengths of time. However they made no estimates of when an experimental creep rate determination must be rejected because it does not represent a true steady-state or minimum creep rate. In order to be certain that a creep curve is within the steady-state region, the total creep strain should be of the order of 0.1 to 0.2. For a creep test of a year's duration this requirement implies that a secondary creep rate smaller than about 10-3 per hr cannot be measured reliably. The corresponding creep rate for a 10-year test is 10-6 per hr. The creep rates of the tests that were considered by the authors to prove the existence of viscous creep were of the order of or less than 10-6 per hr. One can conclude reasonably that this data does not prove unambiguously that large strain steady-state creep rate of lead is proportional to the stress in the stress range of 50 to 250 psi (3.5 x 106 to 2 X 107 dynes per sq cm). Another technique can be used to obtain the stress dependence at low stress levels. The creep rate is a very sensitive function of temperature. The creep rate can be increased by very large amounts merely by increasing the temperature. We carried out steady-state creep tests on lead single crystals25 at temperatures up to 320°C. We were able to obtain creep rate data down to stresses as low as 35 psi (2.5 x 10' dynes per sq cm). Our smallest creep rate was 8 x 10-5 per hr. Thus we obtained large strain, steady-state creep rates to even lower stresses than were considered by Gifkins and Snowden. No evidence was seen for viscous creep. The creep rate was proportional to the stress raised to about a 4.5 power down to the lowest stresses. Since there is no reason to believe that changing the temperature should change the stress dependence of steady-state creep, we feel that large strain viscous creep does not occur in the stress range quoted by the authors for lead single crystals or large-grain polycrystalline samples of lead. This conclusion does not imply that viscous creep may nat occur in a lower stress range or in the same stress range for fine grain material or at creep strains very much smaller than 0.1. Support by the U.S. Office of Naval Research is acknowledged. Authors' Reply R. C. Gifkins and K. U. Snowden We thank Dr. Weertman for his discussion and although, as we hope to show, we do not agree with his reservations, we do concur in stressing the importance of ensuring that creep rates are reliably obtained. Dr. Weertman appears to be content to accept n = 1 for low stresses with fine-grained material but not for single crystals. We believe our results show that the former result cannot be accepted without also accepting the latter. We will also show that the probable errors in our minimum creep rates are insufficient to alter our conclusions, that the criterion proposed by Dr. Weertman is arbitrarily restrictive and his alternative experimental approach possibly invalid. 1) A principal result of our Fig. 1(a) is that n = 1 for polycrystalline specimens at room temperature and 50°C for stresses below -250 psi. There was evidence that crystal slip and grain boundary sliding contributed approximately equaily to the overall strain in this low-stress regime. This implies that either a) grain boundary sliding controls slip within the grains or b) both grain boundary sliding and crystal slip independently occur according to mechanisms which give n = 1. Alternative a does not seem acceptable, so we were forced to consider b. This led us to reexamine work on bicrystals by Strutt and Gifkins and plot curves Fig. l(b). Previously Strutt et al. (loc. cit.), had merged these points with others using the Zener-Holloman parameter and thus, we now believe, had been led to overlook the behavior where n = 1. Curves C and D in Fig. l(b) did appear to confirm the hypotheses that n = 1 for crystal slip at these low stresses and the sliding curve F was similarly of the expected form. It was comparatively easy to find a quantitative theory to account for n = 1 for sliding and the similarity of curves C and D to curve F (all obtained from the same set of specimens) led us to feel that the single-crystal curves were valid. 2) We believe the secondary creep rates for both the polycrystalline and single-crystal specimens to be in error by factors c2. In Fig. 6 creep curves for polycrystalline specimens of lead(1) and lead(II) are reproduced as curves a and b, respectively, and curve c is for a single crystal at 100 psi. It is clear that, although the attainment of secondary creep rate takes 2 years for a and 150 days for b, thereafter the curve is linear for periods of 7 and -1 year, respectively. The single crystal has a linear portion commencing after 20 and extending to 90 days. MINING geology does not lend itself - very readily to a review embracing "improvements in methods," as perhaps do shop practices or laboratory procedures. The "methods" used in mining geology are simply the application of geology to mining; winning the ore, the handling of material, mechanical appliances, all belong strictly to mining proper, and have no place in a review of geology as applied to mining. A comprehensive review would necessarily cover a .very broad field, which could be subdivided into many -parts. Commercial purity aluminum was deformed by extrusion over the temperature range 320° to 616°C and the strain rate range 0.1 to 10 per sec. Flow stresses and strain rates were calculated from the experimenLa1 ram pressures and speeds. The stress-strain rate-lemperature relationship in extrusion was found to be similar to that in creep. Extrusion, torsion, compression, and creep data extending over ten orders of magnitude of strain rate and over two orders of magnitude of stress were correlated by a single creep equation. It was concluded that hot-working is a thermally activated process, in which the rate-controlling mechanism is either the climb of edge dislocations or [he motion of jogged screw dislocations. The microstructural changes observed during extrusion were consistent with the proposed deformation mechanisms. ALTHOUGH great progress has been made in understanding the technology of extrusion, very little is known about the actual deformation mechanisms operating during flow. Previous accounts describing extrusion have indicated that the relationship between ram speed (V), pressure (P), and temperature (T) can be given as follows:1 V = apb and P = A' exp(-AT). In these equations, a and b are constants which depend on temperature, A' is a constant which depends on ram speed, and A is a "coefficient" with a different value for each metal. Although these equations have fairly wide application, they do not contribute much to a fundamental understanding of the deformation. Furthermore, extrusion has not hitherto been considered as a thermally activated rate process. This lacuna is surprising because hot-working is similar to high-temperature creep in several respects. There is, in fact, a fair body of experimental evidence suggesting that the material response under hot-working conditions is similar to that occurring under creep conditions, in spite of the many orders of magnitude difference in strain rate.2"4 Since creep has been extensively analyzed in terms of dislocation mechanisms, the comparison of hot-working to creep is useful, for it can suggest the possible deformation mechanisms operating during hot-working. In this paper, the hot extrusion of aluminum will be examined from the point of view of thermally activated deformation mechanisms, such as operate during creep. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental procedure consisted of extruding commercial purity aluminum* over a range of ram velocities and temperatures at constant die reduction by the direct method. Details of the experimental equipment have been published elsewhere.5 Extrusion was carried out at each of the following billet temperatures: 320°, 376°, 445°, 490°, 555°, and 616°C at the following constant ram speeds: 0.002, 0.008, 0.02, 0.1, and 0.2 in. per sec.* All results were obtained using a square-shouldered die with an extrusion ratio of 40:1, giving a reduction in area of 97.5 pct. The ram force was the dependent variable, and was measured by means of strain gages on the ram and was plotted as a function of ram travel. The sequence of events before making an extrusion was duplicated before each run so as to minimize as much as possible variations in experimental conditions. For example, after the equipment had been assembled, the billet was allowed to heat up to temperature inside the insulated container. Once the container attained the desired temperature, a period of 1/2 hr was allowed to elapse before the extrusion was made. This time was found to be required to allow the billet to reach a steady-state temperature, as determined from previous tests. When all was ready, extrusion was carried out without interruption; that is, the billet was upset and extruded in one operation. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The two usual experimental approaches for investigating high-temperature deformation exhibit an important common feature. In the first approach, which corresponds to creep, a constant stress (or load) is applied to the material at constant temperature and the resultant strain is recorded against time. After an initial transient stage, a state of constant strain rate exists (secondary creep), in which a steady-state condition is established which is sensitive to variation in either applied stress or temperature. In the second approach, a constant strain rate is applied and the resultant flow stress is recorded. This corresponds to the situation in hot torsion or hot compression, where it is observed that, for a constant test temperature, there is an initial rise in stress to a steady value which is maintained up to very high strains. In tests of this type, a steady-state region is also established in which the stress is sensitive to variation in either the strain rate or the temperature.3,4,6-16 In both types of tests, therefore, a steady-state region is established after an initial transient. In the case of hot-working this region may be called steady-state hot-working, and it is analogous to steady-state creep with which it has many common features. Stress Dependence of the strain Rate in Extrusion. In order to assess the stress dependence of the strain rate under extrusion conditions, and to compare it to that of creep, as well as of hot torsion and hot compression, the extrusion data were analyzed according to power, exponential and hyperbolic sine creep equations.

THE field of rare metals is so broad that progress can be reported upon many important fronts. Not satisfied with the 92 elements that Mendeleeff and his followers have accepted as legitimate, scientists are trying now to complicate matters by making new elements. Enrico Fermi announced the fabrication of "Element 93". Uranium, instead of being allowed to disintegrate slowly according to its normal habit, was bombarded with neutrons until some of them seemed to have stuck in the nucleus. To understand just what is alleged to have happened all one has to do is to line up the elements in their usual order of ascending atomic weight and imagine, as physicists do, that each atom is a little solar orbit comprising a central mass or planet about which other masses revolve like satellites. Ordinary hydrogen, being very light, consists of only one positively charged proton center, with only one positively charged electron revolving about it. Other atones are progressively more complicated until we come to uranium, which has a relatively big center and 92 particles revolving around it.

Within a 30-mile radius of Sudbury, Ontario, the Ontario division of the International Nickel Co. of Canada, Ltd., operates nine underground mines and two open pits. Prior to 1966, ore removal from the underground workings was mainly by scraping, using 125-hp electric slushers in blasthole and caving mining, and 30-hp or less air-operated slushers for fill- method mining. The development and evaluation of low-profile, diesel-powered front-end loaders, designed specifically for underground operations, was followed with keen interest during the period 1964-1965.

In order that the reader may not be misled, I feel it necessary to comment upon the title of this paper. "Laws of Rock Behavior," one may take as being part of the all-embracing "Law of Nature" and this, according to the Oxford Dictionary, relates to the principles of conduct recognized as being pleasing to God. I feel it would be presumptuous to erect a code of rock behavior on this basis, so turn to a secondary definition, namely that a "Law" is that which is intrinsically reasonable. It is extremely unlikely that any group of geologists, or workers in rock mechanics would be in complete agreement about what could be taken to be "intrinsically reasonable." Therefore, this paper does not present any deified utterances, but rather deals with a few aspects of rock behavior which I consider to be intrinsically reasonable and with which I hope the reader will concur. The mode of behavior of rocks in the Earth's crust covers the range from wholly brittle to completely ductile ; with a deformation time scale which may be measured in milliseconds, for some events such as meteoritic impact, or in millions of years for the tectonic deformation involved in mountain building. A complete survey is, of course, outside the scope of an introductory paper, so I must be both brief and selective in my treatment. Any attempt to establish the mode of rock behavior in the Earth's crust should take into account data and relationships established in laboratory experiments and correlate these with field evidence. Consequently, the first section of this paper presents a brief discussion of the experimental aspects of rock mechanics which are pertinent to the subsequent discussion.

THE John Fritz Medal Board of Award, at its annual meeting on Jan. 21, 1921, awarded its gold medal and diploma to Sir Robert Hadfield for the invention of manganese steel. On June 1, announcement was made that the Board of Award had awarded its gold medal and diploma to Charles Prosper Eughe Schneider for "achievement in metallurgy of iron and steel; for development of ordnance, especially the 75-mm. gun, and for notable patriotic contribution ' to the winning of the war." The award to Sir Robert Hadfield is for the year 1921; the award to Mr. Schneider is for 1922. The latter was made at this time in order that the medal might be presented by the group of American engineers now visiting England and France.*

EXTENSIVE progress has been made in the metallurgy of alloys for die castings. Enthusiastic proponents of some alloys are inclined to make extravagant claims for their materials, which may be justified by physical tests on test bars made from the respective alloys but are seldom justified by the results obtained with commercial die castings made from those alloys. Chemical analysis of the test bars and castings fails to determine the cause of these variations, since they are due to other physical factors entering into the commercial production of die castings. In this paper, an attempt will be made to outline some of the factors in commercial die-casting practice to which these variable results may be attributed, in the hope that the manufacturer of die castings, recognizing the importance of these factors, will devote more attention to them in the design and construction of dies and equipment. In 1914,1 the author defined die castings as "metal castings made by forcing molten metal, underpressure, into metallic molds or dies." This definition was given in order to differentiate die castings from other molded metal products such as "permanent-mold" castings, "slush" castings and similar products that are sometimes erroneously termed die castings. The term "die casting" could be interpreted to include all castings made in metal molds or dies; but since this term, like most of our technical nomenclature, has been developed by commercial practice we must look to this practice for its proper definition. The Germans, with their usual devotion to descriptive names, have adopted the name of spritzguss (squirt cast) for die castings. Undoubtedly this name is more descriptive of the die-casting process, where the metal is literally squirted into the die and serves to differentiate this process from other metal mold processes, where the metal is poured into the die. COLONY (author's reply to discussion).-The work of Sosman and Merwin on the system lime-ferric oxide, mentioned by Mr. Rankin, was not overlooked. When studying portland cements and portland-cement clinkers petrographically, however, the lime-iron compound was difficult to correlate with the very definite dicalcium ferrite described by those investigators, which possesses such well-defined optical properties. In portland cements, the calcium ferrite (or ferrate?) is an indefinite, fuzzy, and generally amorphous, or apparently amorphous substance that is distributed interstitially with respect to the other grains, from which it was very difficult to derive any satisfactory results. For this reason, the writer, tentatively, chose to regard it as related to the aluminate, and assigned to it the composition 3CaO.Fe203, which may be incorrect, however, as Mr. Rankin suggests.

Extensive progress has been made in the metallurgy of alloys for die castings. Enthusiastic proponents of some alloys are inclined to make extravagant claims for their materials, which may be justified by physical tests on test bars made from the respective alloys but are seldom justified by the results obtained with commercial die castings made from those alloys. Chemical analysis of the test bars and castings fails to determine the cause of these variations, since they are due to other physical factors entering into the commercial production of die castings. In this paper, an attempt will be made to outline some of the factors in commercial die-casting practice to which these variable results may be attributed, in the hope that the manufacturer of die castings, recognizing the importance of these factors, will devote more attention to them in the design and construction of dies and equipment. In 1914,l the author defined die castings as "metal castings made by forcing molten metal, under pressure, into metallic molds or dies." This definition was given in order to differentiate die castings from other molded metal products such as "permanent-mold" castings, L'slush" castings and similar products that are sometimes erroneously termed die castings. The term "die casting" could be interpreted to include all castings made in metal molds or dies; but since this term, like most of our technical nomenclature, has been developed by commercial practice we must look to this practice for its proper definition. The Germans, with their usual devotion to desecriptive names, have adopted the name of sprilzguss (squirt cast) for die castings. Undoubtedly this name is more descriptive of the die-casting process, where the metal is literally squirted into the die and serves to differentiate this process from other metal mold processes, where the metal is poured into the die. Early in 1965 the Surface Combustion Division of the Midland-Ross Corporation was awarded the contract to engineer and construct a taconite pelletizing plant for the National Steel pellet plant, administered by the Hanna Mining Co., near Keewatin, Minn. This plant, which will have an annual capacity of 2,400,000 long tons, will produce pellets from magnetite concentrate using a new process developed through a joint research program by Midland-Ross, Hanna Mining, and the National Steel Corp. The work that culminated in the decision to construct this plant is the result of a research program for the development of the Midland-Ross heat fast process for the production of prereduced or metallized pellets. PELLETIZING PROCESS There are many acceptable methods for producing oxide pellets from ground iron ores and concentrates, and all of these give an acceptable product for blast furnace utilization. The vertical shaft furnace, the traveling grate, and the grate-kiln have been installed in many pelletizing plants in the northern hemisphere; therefore, the acceptance of these methods and the problems associated with them are well understood. However, this research project investigated a method for improving upon these processes to produce a high quality oxide pellet at a low operating cost.

G OLD MINING is enjoying a real revival in the West, and a considerable portion of the production is coming from small properties. The large mining companies of the world get most of the publicity, but in the last year the small gold property has often proved a more attractive field for the mining engineer looking for something to do. Old mines have been re- opened, prospects have been more closely examined, and many properties that were out of the running with the high commodity and labor costs of two or three years ago, have recently been making money for their operators. An interesting phase of this activity is the operation of so-called one-man mines. The west is dotted with these small properties, without the resources or reserves to warrant large-scale operation, but which return a living and often something over to one or two men who under- stand mining and simple methods of treatment.
