METALLURGISTS and mill operators appreciate, in a general way, .the economic or commercial relationship between recovery and grade of product but few have correlated in detail fluctuating metal prices with the metallurgy. They know that many factors such as metal price, dedusiions for returning charge, transportation, percentage of metal in head ore, etc.; all affect the commercial relationship between recovery and grade of product. In practically every mill some one at some ' time has calculated the amount of recovery that can be sacrificed for each percentage increase in grade of concentrate and from this calculated ratio the commercial or ., economic tail has been established. Such a ratio finally becomes a well-entrenched rule by which the progress of the metallurgy is judged.. When once established, these-, ratios are but seldom corrected to changes of metal prices for each possible grade of concentrate that may be produced. The calculation is tedious when often repeated. Other methods have been suggested and used to correlate the commercial with the metallurgical phase. A factor .derived ,by multiplying the grade of concentrate by recovery is often used, but is of little importance because it does not possess a single commercial quantity. The percentage monetary recovery calculated by dividing the gross value of the ore into the net smelter return gives a good economic index and, is to be commended, but it is difficult to correlate exactly and quickly the work of each day on a commercial basis.

Conquista, the uranium mining and milling complex owned jointly by Continental Oil Co. and Pioneer Nuclear, Inc., has begun operations in Falls City, Texas. The mill has been designed to produce 1.5 million lb of U3O, from 600,000 tpy of ore mined. Currently, the plant processes a maximum 2000 tpd of ore. Mine Planning Texas ore deposits are small and scattered in comparison to other uranium mining districts. Those to be mined at Conquista range from a few acres to more than 100 acres in size. Ore thickness ranges from a few inches to over 15 ft, and depth from less than 20 ft to more than 170 ft below ground surface. Distance from the mill ranges up to 35 mi.

A series of aluminum single crystals was subjected to axially symmetric flow by drawing through dies. The orientation dependence of the drawing stress, which indicates the resistance to this type of flow, compares reasonably with predictions of Taylor and of Bishop and Hill. Measured lattice rotations likewise are generally consistent with theory. The most successful analyses of the plastic behavior of polycrystalline metal and its relationship to single crystal behavior are those of Taylor1-3 and of Bishop and Hill.4-6 The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical test of some of the basic assumptions involved in these theories. Both treatments apply to fcc metals and assume the shape change of each grain in a polycrystal to be the same as that of the polycrystal as a whole. Thus for a randomly oriented polycrystal extended under uni-axial tension each grain is assumed to undergo axially symmetric flow. dey = dez = -1/2dex, deyZ = dezx = dexy = 0 [l] where x, y, and z are a set of orthogonal axes, x being the tensile axis. Although [011.] oriented grains in bcc and fcc metals may depart markedly from this ideal behavior,7,8 the assumption is probably quite reasonable for most grains. Under a uniaxial tensile stress, ox, the work dW per unit volume expended in producing an increment of axial strain dex is, dW=oxdex [21 Since this work is expended in slip, dw =STi dyi 131 where Ti and yi are the shear stress and shear strain on the active slip systems. In both analyses Ti is taken to be the same on all slip systems, and dependent only on the total prior shear strain on all systems, so dw = Tdy [41 where t is the shear stress required for slip and y is the sum of the shear strain yi on all slip systems. Combining 121 and [4] and defining M = oX/T The ratio M is a generalized Schmid factor. It relates the tensile stress required for axially symmetric flow, ox, to the basic shear stress, 7, and it also expresses the ratio of crystallographic strain, y, to the tensile strain, Ex It depends only on the orientation of the crystal. Taylor evaluated M for various orientations by finding the least value of dy/dEx which could satisfy the shape change. Bishop and Hill, on the other hand, found M by considering the relative work (1/T)dW/dEx expended by stress states which could activate enough slip systems to produce the shape changes. The results of both methods appear to be equivalent, although certain omissions were made in Taylor's original work. The orientation dependence of M, calculated by the second method,9 is shown in Fig. 1. Taylor used the average 2= 3.06 for all possible orientations to predict the tensile stress-strain curve (oxvs Ex) for a random polycrystal from the shear stress-strain curve (t vs y) of a single crystal. Changes in M from lattice rotation were neglected so points on the ox vs ex curve were simply taken at ox = 3.06t and e = y/3.06 from corresponding points on the t vs y curve. Recent extension of the analyses of Taylor and of Bishop and Hill to crystallographically textured metals has been used to relate plastic anisotropy to textures, and to predict the potential texture hardening that could result from texture control.9 Unfortunately there have been relatively few experimental tests of the underlying theory. Taylor found that the tensile stress-strain curve of polycrystalline aluminum did agree reasonably well with that predicted from a single-crystal T-y curve. The velocity and attenuation of elastic waves in sandstones were measured as a function of both pressure and fluid saturation. A large change occurs in these quantities if water is added and the rock is not compressed, but the change is small if the rock is subjected to a large overburden pressure. Measurements were made by vibrating cylindrical samples in both the extensional and torsional modes at frequencies up to 30,000 cycles/sec. Formulas were derived which enable the attenuation of dilatational waves in dry rocks to be deduced from the data. Similar experimental methods were used to investigate the properties of unconsolidated sands. Velocities were found to vary with the 1/4 power of the overburden pressure and attenuations to decrease with the 1/6 power. The effects of grain size, amplitude and fluid saturation were studied. Formulas by which the effects produced by a jacket around the sample may be calculated were derived. The practical application of these results to formation valuation is discussed. INTRODUCTION The attenuation of elastic waves in the earth has been of interest to the seismologist and geophysicist for many years, but only recently to the petroleum engineer. Engineering interest has been brought about by the success of velocity logging devices, for it is possible by modification of these instruments to measure the attenuation of sound waves in addition to their velocity and, hence, deduce the mobility of formation fluids as well as the porosities of the rocks which contain them. The main problem is to decide whether field measurements can be made with sufficient accuracy to be of practical use. This problem can only be solved after we know the magnitude of the attenuations which are typical of the earth at various depths. The logarithmic decrement of a fluid-saturated rock is the sum of a "sloshing" decrement and a "jostling" decrement, the former caused by the mobility of the fluid contained within the rock and the latter by the granular framework of the rock. Sloshing decrements can be calculated' using Biot's theory, but the jostling losses are less well understood. The present paper reports an experimental investigation of jostling losses in consolidated and uncon- solidated sands, particularly with respect to the effect of overburden pressure and fluid saturation. Born' showed that the decrement of a sandstone may increase dramatically when only a few per cent by weight of distilled water is added, and that the additional loss is proportional to the frequency of vibration. His measurements were made with no compressive stress on the framework of the rock. M. Gondouin3 investigated similar phenomena for fluid-saturated plasters but also did not compress the samples. In the present paper it is shown that compression of the framework reduces this effect, so that at depth the jostling decrement of a sandstone may be expected to be almost independent of fluid saturation and frequency. Decrements for many sedimentary rocks have been given by Volarovich,4 but all for the state of zero overburden pressure. Anomalously low velocities have been logged in shallow unconsolidated gas sands. Results of the present investigation confirm that these velocities are not caused by correspondingly high attenuations, because the jostling decrement in a packing of sand grains is small and much less than in a consolidated sandstone at the same depth. Velocities in sands have been measured by Tsareva5 and by Hardin6 as a function of pressure, but the corresponding decrements do not appear to have been measured previously. The widely used "resonant bar method" of measuring velocities and decrements was employed. Comments on variations of this technique have recently been published by McSkimmin.7 The main novelty of the present technique was the application of pressure to the samples. It was found possible to do this by placing the apparatus inside a pressure vessel, provided the conditions leading to large additional losses were avoided. These conditions are discussed below. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Cylindrical samples were caused to vibrate in both the extensional and torsional mode of vibration and the amplitude of vibration was measured as a function of frequency in the neighborhood of a resonant frequency. The resonant frequency, fr, is related to the corresponding elastic modulus by the formulas where E and N are Young's modulus and the modulus of rigidity, p is the density of the sample, and A the wavelength of the vibration.

Conditions in the oil and gas industry in Indiana were about the same in 1935 as in 1934. This is especially true of the old Trenton area and the Harrison County area where production was steady and almost no exploration and development took place. The past year has seen an increase in drilling activity and a decrease in oil and gas output in southwestern Indiana. In the state, 224 wells were completed in 1935, of which 48 were oil wells, 61 gas wells, and 115 dry holes. A few of these were old gas wells deepened to oil horizons. Twenty-six wells started during 1935 were not completed by Dec. 31. Approximately one-half the wells drilled were within proven areas. A relatively large number of wildcats, especially in Daviess, Pike and Gibson Counties, were in search of new gas supplies to supplant the diminishing resources in those counties. The decreased production of gas was due largely to the fact that existing supplies declined more rapidly than new fields could be brought on. The Alford field, in Pike County, which produced the bulk of the supply in 1934, was called on to do likewise in 1935, but was unable to respond sufficiently to keep up the yearly production for southwestern Indiana. During the last half of the year, the Oaktown field, Knox County, was connected with one of the principal pipe lines of the state, which helped to keep gas production above an unusual low. The decline in oil production was due almost entirely to proration during the first eight months of the year. The proration affected Daviess, Pike, Gibson, Sullivan and Vigo counties, which produce about three-fourths of the total for the state. After proration was lifted, the wells never quite reached the conditions existing before proration. The average daily production per well in Indiana is less than two barrels. The outstanding development in Indiana in 1935 was the drilling in the Oaktown field immediately before and after the laying of the 6-in. pipe line to the field. Almost without exception the wells came in with an open flow of two to four million cubic feet. At the end of the year, 26 wells were connected to the pipe line. Development of this field will

IN January last I published in the Engineering and Mining Journal a table giving, with a considerable degree of accuracy, the production of anthracite coal for the year 1874. At that time it was impossible to give any correct estimate of the production of bituminous coal, for the returns I had been able to secure from such distant and scattered districts were not always forwarded punctually, and the work of -obtaining anything like a true estimate of the coal mined in districts from which I was unable to obtain official returns was both laborious and tedious. As will be seen from the detailed reports furnished herewith, I have succeeded in obtaining tolerably accurate returns of 20,093,704 tons; and upon careful revision by numerous well-informed local authorities, my first estimate of the amount of coal not officially returned to me has grown very considerably; indeed, as I get more information on the subject I find that our bituminous coal production greatly exceeds the amount we have been accustomed to hear it placed at, aggregating as it does, 26,465,704 tons. Mr. Andrew Roy, State Inspector of Mines for Ohio, has reported the production of Ohio at 4,168,445 tons, while his first estimates were but 3,820,000 tons; and similarly, in other cases, the more full the returns direct from the mines the more incorrect do I find all previous reports. I am able now to furnish, not an accurate statement, indeed, but by far the most full and reliable one that has yet been published of our coal production. The amount of labor involved in obtaining this admittedly imperfect report has been simply enormous. In the following tabular statement it will be perceived that Pennsylvania produces nearly one-half of all the bituminous coal mined * Since this paper was read fuller reports from some of the States whose production had been "estimated" have modified the figures given. The most serious error is in California, which produces probably 200,000 tons less than these figures. Oregon and Washington territories also yield smaller amounts than here reported; but these reductions are probably fully compensated by fuller reports from other States that were here underestimated. The correct aggregate amount will not vary much from that here given. Early in 1876 I will be able to give a fuller and more accurate report for the year 1875.

IT is customary for the president of an engineering society, in his annual address, to describe either some engineering problem with which he has beer connected or to review the work of the society during his administration. My first thought, this being the sesquicentennial year of our nation, was to review the advance in coal mining for the past fifty years, during which period I have been more or less intimately con-nected with the bituminous coal industry, and have personally witnessed most of the great changes which have occurred in methods and machinery used in the production of coal, but preparation of the requisite address would take more time than could be spared to prepare it, and its presentation would consume so much time that it .would not be suitable. The new arrangement providing for giving the presi-dent's address at the business meeting makes it more .appropriate to review the work of the Institute during the past year, together with some suggestions which appeal to me as being of advantage to the future wel-fare of the Institute, which I will try to do briefly. The work of the business office has been reviewed in the Secretary's report and it will not be necessary for me to dwell on it. Suffice it to say, it seems to be going along very well. Additional work could be done which would be to the advantage of the Institute, if we had the money with which to defray the necessary ex-pense incident to it, but I will refer to this again later. I would be derelict if I did not refer to the splendid work of the Secretary and the Assistant Secretary. Keeping in touch with all the sections, which number now about 26, and affiliated student societies which number 40, besides special committees, and represent-ing the Institute on various boards, provides work enough to occupy the Secretary's time almost exclu-sively. In addition to this the Secretary and the As-sistant Secretary have the work of editing and publishing the TRANSACTIONS of the Institute; the issuing of the magazine, MINING AND METALLURGY, in the splendid manner in which it goes out to the mem-bership is no light task and I think they should receive the commendation of the membership for this work.

THE Butte, Anaconda & Pacific electrification is of peculiar interest, in an incidental way, to the entire mining fraternity, and especially the engineering branch, not only in this great Northwest country but throughout the entire Western mining country, which is rich in minerals and water power. It is probably fair to say that the prime object of mining and smelting engineering is to reduce the cost of production, and in the case in hand the relative location of mines and smelter brings the cost of transportation of ore to the front. While some might assign this item to the railway people, it is inseparably a part and parcel of the general scheme of the production of metal from the ore. In considering the electrification of the B., A. &. P. railway the mining and smelting engineer, above all, wants to know what saving will be effected by the change in motive power. Unfortunately the new power has been in use during a very limited period and on the Smelter Hill section of the road only, and no reliable data, from actual service conditions, can be obtained until the entire electrified section has been in service for a reasonable length of time. Any remarks on this subject at the present time, therefore, must of necessity be general in nature and more or less descriptive. The railway, electrical and mining worlds and the country in general are indebted to the B., A. & P. railway for the pioneer work it is now doing, as it undoubtedly marks the beginning of the electrification, within the comparatively near future, of all transcontinental roads between the Missouri river and the Pacific coast. Together with this goes the development of an untold wealth in water power and all natural resources within the same territory. For the first time in the history of electric railway work, in this country, direct current at a potential of 2,400 volts is being used. With this potential there is a great saving in transmission of energy to the locomotives and there are only two substations, one at. either end and 26 miles apart, for supplying the power for the movement of trains of heavy tonnage over the main line and for switching movements at terminal and intermediate yards, and comparatively little feeder copper is required.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) IN the copper-mining district of northern Michigan a fair-sized mine usually operates two or more shafts along the strike of the lode, these shafts being usually at least 1,000 ft. apart. The tonnage to be hoisted from each shaft is large-from 13,000 to 25,000 tons per month. The hoisting-engines used are generally steam-driven, non-condensing, duplex engines with Corliss valves, supplied by steam from separate boiler-plants where the distance between shafts is great. In an attempt to centralize power-plants and secure central-station economies, the Winona Copper Co. installed an electric hoist of the Ilgner type, with Ward Leonard control. A brief description of this plant has already been published.1 The only point of variation from the simple Ilgner set lies in the connection of two generators to a single induction-motor by flexible couplings. These generators serve motors which operate hoisting-drums at separate shafts, viz., No. 4 shaft, Winona, and No. 1 shaft, King Philip. , The hoist for No. 4 shaft, is about 1,700 ft. from the power-plant, and in this building the motor-generator set is placed. No. 1 King Philip hoist is 1,500 ft. from the motor-generator set. The equipment of the motor-generator set is as follows: In the middle of the set is a 12-pole, 450-h-p., 600-rev. per min., 2,080-volt, three-phase, 60-cycle, variable-speed induction-motor, connected on each side to a 20-ton fly-wheel which is 10 ft. in diameter, and to a 6-pole, 170-kw, 575-volt, interpole, direct-current generator. On each side of the shaft is placed a separate exciter, which delivers current at 125 volts. It has been stated, by Sir James M. Barrie, that "the man of science appears to be the only man who has something to say, just now-and the only man who does not know how to say it". The friendly jibe of the novelist contains enough exaggeration to make it humorous to the followers of Huxley and Spencer; but could any litterateur poke similar fun at the exponents of the avowedly utilitarian branches of science-the men of technology-without suggesting an unpleasant truth? Indeed the engineer does bungle language deplorably. He makes a fetish of efficiency, yet he shows no regard for the effective use of one of his most important tools-the pen; he believes devoutly in accuracy, yet he employs an instrument of precision as carelessly as a small boy handles a gun. This inconsistency may be due to causes such as were indicated by the Academic Senate when it undertook to explain the defective writing of the; students in this university.* The Senate suggested that the student is "constantly subjected by his environment to the unedifying influence of myriad examples of poor English", and that he is also affected by "a certain public prejudice against correctness of expression ". With these statements most of us will agree. Our local newspapers, for instance, tend to spoil the student's taste for good English; later in life, as an engineer, his daily contact with illiterate men inclines him to careless speech and slovenly writing. IT IS proper that there should be a brief accounting of the stewardship which was entrusted to the Joint Conference Committee by resolution adopted by the. Organizing Conference on June 4, 1920, in part as follows: RESOLVED, that it is the sense of this Organizing Conference that the Joint Conference Committee should be entrusted with making provision for putting the conclusions of this Conference of engineers into effect, etc. Pursuant to this authority, the Joint Conference, Committee has acted as an Ad-interim Committee has- prepared, a synopsis of the proceedings of the Organizing .Conference, has edited and published the Constitution and By-Laws adopted by this Conference, and. has issued an invitation to become Charter Members of The Federated, American Engineering Societies; to the list of organizations to whom invitations had been extended to attend 'the Organizing., Conference. The Committee in connection with this invitation offered to the extent of its ability, such assistance as might be-desired; and arranged in many cases for one or more of its members to be present when the matter of membership in The Federated American Engineering Societies was considered. . .

The internal friction of single-crystal LiF has been investigated as a function of crystal orientation, while simultaneously applying a static compressive load. Three different crystal orientations were used, these being samples with the (100), (110), and (111) directions along the sample length. Results show the internal friction measured to be similar in appearance but different in magnitude for the (100) and (110) samples. With both orientations, application of a static stress caused an increase in the amplitude-independent damping, which recovered with time. The amplitude-dependent damping was found to first decrease with load up to the yield stress and then increase rapidly. Samples of the (111) orientation were found to have no measurable internal friction even when loaded up to 3.0 kg per sq mm. These results are discussed in terms of current theories of internal friction in ionic crystals. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the dislocation mobility and dislocation motion in high-purity single-crystal LiF at applied stress levels up to the yield stress. Internal friction measurements of the dislocation damping while simultaneously applying a static compressive load was the experimental technique used. LiF crystals much prefer to slip on the (110) set of slip planes. However, with a suitable stress distribution they can be forced to slip on the {100} set of slip planes.' For both sets of slip planes the slip direction is the same, namely (110). The object of this investigation was to try and learn more about the dynamical properties of dislocations on the different slip systems in LiF crystals. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Dislocation damping was measured, in terms of the log decrement, using a five-component marx2 composite piezoelectric oscillator. The apparatus used allows one to measure the dislocation damping while simultaneously applying a static compressive load on the sample. A schematic of the apparatus used is shown in Fig. 1 and a complete discussion of its construction and operation is given elsewhere.3 All measurements were made at room temperature with a longitudinal resonant frequency of approximately 50 kc per sec. Damping measurements were made using longitudinal vibrations with strain amplitudes from up to 10. Static loads up to 3.0 kg per sq mm were applied to the sample while the damping was being measured. Samples used in this investigation were high-purity single crystals of LiF purchased from the Harshaw Chemical Co. All samples were approximately of an in. square and were hand-ground in length to one-half wavelength to match the resonant frequency of the driver and gage quartz crystals. Samples of three different crystallographic orientations were used, namely, crystals with the (loo), (110), and (111) direction parallel to their length. The magnitude of the damping is a direct measure of the area on the slip planes swept out by dislocations during a complete oscillatory cycle. With a sample of the (100) orientation the maximum applied shear stress, due to longitudinal vibrations, is on the (110) slip planes with zero shear stress on the (100) slip planes. Thus, damping measured from a (100) sample is due entirely to dislocation motion taking place on the (110) set of slip planes. Similarly, for a sample of the (111) orientation there is zero shear stress on the (110) set of slip planes and the damping measured from a sample of this orientation is due entirely to dislocation motion on the (100) set of slip planes. The effect of small solute additions of Cu on the activation energies for creep A1 single crystals were determined over the range from 78° to 850° K. Below 240°K and above 800°K activation energies were unchanged. Between 240°K and 400°K strain aging causes the creep rate to become vanishingly small and the flow stress was independent of the temperature. Between 500° and 50°K the activation energy was increased to 41,000 cal per mole. NUMEROUS investigationsL have shown that solid solution alloying invariably increases the flow stress. A typical example is documented in Fig. 1. Such increases in flow stress can arise from two general effects: Alloying can increase the long-range stress fields through which dislocations must move by causing appropriate clustering; modification of dislocation densities, and so forth. Alloying can also modify the short-range stress fields that determine the activation energies for thermally stimulated migration of dislocations, such as occurs in some solute atom pinning processes, and so forth. Actually both long- and short-range stress-field effects can occur simultaneously. It was the purpose of this investigation to evaluate the effect of alloying on the short-range stress fields by determining the effect of alloying on the activation energies for creep. The resulting observations also shed some light on the effect of long-range stress fields on dislocation processes. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Single-crystal bars (6 in. long 3/8 in. wide and l/4 in. thick) of dilute solutions of Cu in A1 were seeded, so as to provide extensive single slip, with the pole of the tensile axis located in the standard stereographic projection as shown in Fig. 2. Each crystal was grown under an argon atmosphere in a graphite mold containing a large reservoir of molten alloy for the purpose of obtaining rather uniform composition of Cu along the length of the bar. The nominal compositions of the alloys which were produced from 99.99 pct Cu and high-purity A1 containing 0.001 pct Fe and 0.001 pct Si, are given in Table I. Strains, measured by linear variable transformers attached by quartz rods to a 3 in. gage section were sensitive to and the stresses were ap- plied by direct loading of the specimen. Temperatures were determined by thermocouples attached to the gage section of the specimens. Below 400°K the apparent activation energies for creep, Q, were determined by the effect of small, rapid changes in temperature of about + 10°K from T1 to T2 on the corresponding creep rates ?1 and ?2 during primary creep according to where R is the gas constant.' Above 400°K, Q was evaluated from Eq. [1] for the secondary creep rate using temperature changes of about ±20K. A typical set of results is shown in Fig. 3. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The previously obtained effect of temperature on the apparent activation energy for creep of single crystals of high-purity A12 is shown by the broken curve of Fig. 4. The datum points on the same graph illustrate the effect of dilute a solid solution alloying with Cu on the activation energy between 600" and 750°K. A study was made of the effects of small quantities of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of colum-bium. Tensile specimens, hydrogenated to concentrations of 20 to 200 ppm, were tested at temperatures of 300°, 191°, and 77°K. Although hydrogen was found to have little effect on the strength of columbium, the ductility of Cb-H alloys was found to be quite sensitive to both hydrogen concentration and temperature. At 300°K, an abrupt loss in ductility occurred at a critical hydrogen concentration, although some ductility was observed beyond the tolerance limit. A similar result was found at a lower hydrogen concentration at 191°K. At 77°K, however, a more gradual loss in ductility with increasing hydrogen concentration was observed. Hydrogenated columbium was thus observed to undergo a ductile-brittle-ductile transition. Metallographic examination of fractured specimens revealed extensive porosity at both 77° and300°K which was a distinct function of hydrogen content. At 191°K, although some secondary cracking was noted, the amount of observed porosity was minimal. These observations are interpreted in terms of hydrogen solubility and mobility as a function of temperature and in the role of hydrogen in promoting growth of microcracks. lHE effect of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of the refractory metals is not, at present, completely understood. A number of studies have shown these materials to be susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement. Roberts and Rogers1 have found that vanadium can be embrittled by hydrogen. It was further demonstrated that fracture undergoes a ductile-brittle-ductile transition as the temperature is lowered from 150° to -196°C; i.e., there is a ductility minimum observed at a certain temperature. The ductility is increased by either raising or lowering the temperature from this point. A more complete study by Eustice and Carlson2 on vanadium containing 10 to 800 ppm placed the ductility minimum at about -100°C with variations reportedly due to hydrogen content and strain rate. Ductility minima have also been found at certain temperatures for tantalum containing 7 ppm H3 and 140 ppm H.4 At hydrogen concentrations above 270 ppm, however, the ductility return at low temperatures was considerably reduced.4 In the case of columbium, some disagreement exists in the literature. Eustice and Carlson,5 Wilcox et al.,6 and Imgram et al.4 failed to find a ductility minimum although a composition-dependent ductile-brittle transition was observed. Hydrogen concentrations in these investigations were 20 ppm,5 1 to 30 ppm,6 and 200 to 390 ppm.4 However, Wood and Daniels7 observed a rather pronounced ductility minimum at hydrogen contents ranging from 19 to 252 ppm. Those theories of hydrogen embrittlement involving the precipitation of diatomic hydrogen which have been applies to ferrous metals8-12 do not seem to be applicable to the case of columbium and other exothermic occluders. Such theories propose that extensive crack formation and propagation occurs by the precipitation and expansion of diatomic hydrogen at internal voids and microcracks. However, photomicrographs of hydrogenated columbium do not show any evidence of damage introduced by the sorption and precipitation of diatomic hydrogen; rather, at high hydrogen concentrations, a hydrogen-rich second phase is precipitated.13'14 In addition, a number of these theories require the development of high hydrogen pressures at voids in the structure.8'10'12 This does not appear to be feasible in the concentration ranges discussed in the aforementioned paragraphs. The possible interaction of atomic hydrogen with microcracks resulting from dislocation pile-ups15,16 remains in doubt since pile-ups have not been observed in bcc metals17 including columbium.18 Wood and Daniels7 have put forth the possibility that a hydride precipitation could be responsible for crack nucleation in columbium. Work by Longson19 has shown that hydrogen embrittlement of columbium parallels the bulk solubility limit; i.e., as the solubility increases, for instance with temperature, the amount of hydrogen necessary to cause embrittlement also increases. Although a hydride precipitation appears attractive as a means of nucleating microcracks in columbium, what require more intensive study are the low-temperature anomalies which have been observed, i.e., the ductile-brittle-d'ictile transition characteristics. Also, the hydrogen concentrations where embrittlement occurs are often below the bulk solubility limits determined by Albrecht et al.13,14 and Walter and Chandler.20 This work is an attempt to determine more definitively the effects of concentration and temperature on the mechanical properties of dilute Cb-H alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Ultrahigh-purity columbium rods, obtained from the Wah Chang Corp., were cold-reduced by rotary swaging. A chemical analysis is given in Table I. The material was cut into cylindrical blanks 1.50 ±0.005 in. long. Individual specimens were either given a stress relief anneal at 750°C or recrystal-lized at 1200°C. Resulting microstructures were either a "bamboo" structure characteristic of a wrought material or a recrystallized structure with a grain diameter of approximately 100 n. All heat treatments were carried out in a vacuum of 10-5 Torr or less.

Measurements of the temperature dependence of the elastic moduli in single crystals of hep ruthenium, rhenium, cobalt, dysprosium, and erbium were carried out for various temperature ranges so as to investigate the correlation, suggested by prior work, between the shear anisotropy ratio, A = C44/C66, and the occurrence of the hcp — bee phase transformation. These measurements confirm the suggestion that A has a positive temperature dependence in that group of hcp metals that undergo thermally induced transfornzations to the bee structure and a negative or zero temperature dependence in the other hcp metals. It appears, from indirect evidence, that the hcp -fee transformation in cobalt is preceded by a highly negative temperature dependence of A. These results indicate that elastic anisotropy is an important factor in determining the temperatures at which martensitic phase transformations occur. Two possible roles for elastic anisotropy are proposed: 1) the shear-modulus ratio within the habit planes must be nearly similar for the two phases and 2) a large anisotropy decreases the stress necessary for the movement of the transfornzation dislocations. FUCHS' calculations of the elastic moduli in the alkali metals have shown that the high shear-anisotropy ratios, c/c', in certain bee metals and alloys are the result of large negative contributions to c' = (c11 - c12)/2 arising from the nearest-neighbor repulsive forces.' On this basis, and following Zener,2 the association between high c/c' ratios and the martensitic phase transformations that occur upon cooling certain bee metals is explained as a unique characteristic of the bee structure. Recent measurements of the elastic moduli in hcp titanium and zirconium show, however, that a high elastic anisotropy also exists in these hcp structures at the temperatures at which they transform to bee upon heating3. If there exists a direct and consistent correlation between the elastic anisotropy in close-packed structures and the occurrence of transformations to the bee phases then there is evidently a need to re-examine the conclusions of Zener theory. Elastic anisotropy may also be the result of the effects of temperature on the stability of the low-temperature close-packed structures or it may play an important role in the mech- anism of the martensitic transformations. The present measurements were aimed at establishing the phenomenological correlation between elastic shear anisotropy in hcp structures and the thermally induced hcp —bee transformations that occur in the majority of the twenty-three hcp metals, as shown in Table I. Prior to the present work the temperature dependence of the anisotropy ratio, A = c44/c66, was known at various temperatures for nine of the metals listed. The data showed a negative temperature dependence of A for cadmium, zinc, magnesium, and cobalt, which do not transform to bee, and a positive temperature dependence of A for thallium, zirconium, titanium, hafnium, and yttrium. The correlation was, however, ambiguous in that these two groups of metals are also separated with respect to the c/a ratios as noted in Table I. There remained the possibility that the temperature dependence of A is a function of c/a and not consistently associated with the transformation. The measurements of the elastic moduli in rhenium and ruthenium, in which hcp —bee transformations do not occur, were needed to help decide this question. The studies of dysprosium and erbium were undertaken to determine whether the correlation holds for the heavy rare earth metals.

OUTOKUMPU, a large copper mine in eastern Finland, has the distinction of being one of the few important mines in the world discovered by a geologist the late Otto Triistedt, of the Geological Sur- vey of Finland, having found the out- clop in 1910 by tracing glacial ore boulders, some of which had been carried as far as fifty kilometres. As the mine had no connection with either railways or waterways and the possibilities of transport were poor, the owners first tried the Hybinette hydrometallurgical process to extract the copper. The raw ore was finely crushed, treated by a sulphatizing roast. and then leached. The resulting solution was electrolyzed, using lead anodes. This experimental plant, having a capacity of 10,000 tons (all Ions are metric tons in this paper) of raw ore and producing 300 to LEO0 tons of electrolytic copper annually, was built in 1913 and run until dis-

A fundamental goal of the Plowshare Program is to predict crater dimensions when an explosive of known yield is buried at a given depth in a given medium. In this paper a technique is presented that seems to calculate adequately, from first principles, the mound and cavity growth that occur during nuclear and high-explosive cratering events. The technique features a standard, numerical approach to high- intensity stress-wave propagation coupled with a unique model of material behavior in brittle failure. A schematic of stress-wave propagation is presented in Fig. 1. The equation of motion provides a functional relation between the applied stress field and the resulting acceleration of each point in the medium. Accelerations, when allowed to act over a small time increment [A]t, produce new velocities, velocities produce displacements, displacements produce strains, and strains produce a new stress field. Time is incremented by [A]t, and the cycle is repeated. The time increment [A]t is determined by an independent stability condition which requires the increment to be smaller than the time necessary far a compressional wave to travel across the smallest zone. We assume that failure occurs in a brittle material when either the tensile strength or the maximum allowable strain energy of distortion is exceeded. When either of these two conditions is violated, the code uses the cracked equation of state to determine the stress. A preshot testing program is used to determine the consolidated and cracked equations of state. The present state of knowledge of three-dimensional rock properties does not provide an adequate basis for evaluating the safety of under- ground structures in situ. Most of the triaxial studies reported in the past have dealt with crushing strength, but have failed to consider the intergranular behavior and triaxial strain state of rocks. Without this information, the structural competence of rocks cannot be accurately assessed. The absolute three-dimensional testing method (ATT) was conceived for the purpose of analyzing the three-dimensional states of stresses and strains in aggregate rocks under conditions commonly encountered in underground structures. In-situ stress-strain states are not simple, even in the simplest possible form of opening, excavated in a homogeneous and isotropic rock medium. In general, there are four basic stress-strain states which are present in underground openings, regardless of the complexity of their geological conditions. They are the yielded, brittle-fractured, stress-relieved, stress-concentrated states, as illustrated in the schematic diagram, Fig. 1. The ATT machine was designed to create and study all these states in the laboratory. A theory describing the aggregate behavior of rocks under these diversified states is essential to evaluate the safety of underground structures. The Griffith theory is limited to tensile failure of ductile materials and therefore does not apply to behavior of aggregate rocks under compression. The Griffith theory also fails to consider the grain boundary characteristics of aggregates, which is the determining factor of rock behavior. The Mohr-Coulomb theory of failure ignores the importance of the intergranular behavior of rocks. An application of the continuum theory to
