A YEAR ago, ,at the Institute's dinner, I closed my A remarks with the words: "The scientist devotes his life to the advancement of learning; the engineer gives his to the advancement of living." May 1 begin tonight where I left off then and speak first of the distinction between science and engineering? This difference is a difference both in purpose and in method: it is the sharp contrast between theory and practice; it marks the broad gap between dream and attainment. Sometimes it happens that the investigator is also the builder and applies what he discovers, yet the distinction between science and engineering serves to point out the broad dependence of the engineer upon his brother the scientist. You remember .the old - saying that "where there is no vision the people perish" translate this into modern experience and we may say that "where there is no science, the engineer fails."

Attempts have been made to predict the volumetric and phase behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mix-turesl-6 but these methods have not been extended to the higher pressures and tem-peratures that are currently encountered in some producing formations. Furthermore, the methods of prediction at present avail-able have not been tested in a sufficient number of cases to ensure their applica-bility to all naturally occurring hydrocar-bon mixtures, even at the lower pressures and temperatures. For these reasons the behavior of a number of hydrocarbon mix-tures from a field in which the subsurface pressures are above 4500 lb. per sq. in.t and the temperatures are in the neighbor-hood of 250°F. was investigated. Method The objective of this program was to determine the volumetric behavior of ma-terial as it existed in the reservoir as a function of pressure, temperature and com-position. Strictly speaking, this cannot be accomplished in any simple fashion. How- ever, the variations in composition that are encountered within a producing reservoir may be approximated roughly by means of mixtures made up of two arbitrarily chosen constituents. Experience indicates that the liquid and gas phases from a high-pressure gas trap afford a simple source of material for this purpose. Throughout this discus-sion the samples of the gas phase and liquid phase from the production trap will be called the "trap-gas sample" and the "trap-liquid sample," respectively. The volumetric behavior of both of the trap samples was determined throughout the temperature interval between 100" and 250°F. at pressures up to 5000 lb. per sq. in. In addition, the behavior of eight different mixtures containing varying proportions of the two trap samples was studied throughout the same temperature and pressure intervals. The experimental results yielded information concerning the specific volume of the material as a function of pressure, temperature and the relative quantity of the trap samples. The relative amount of each of the paraffin hydrocarbons of lower molecular weight than n-hexane was determined for each of the trap samples. In addition, the specific weight, viscosity and average molecular weight of the hexanes-and-heavier fraction of the trap-liquid sample were determined as well as similar information for each of five fractions separated from this material by distillation. From these data the weight fractions of each of the components from methane through pentane were determined for the trap samples and eight systematically chosen mixtures. ROTARY kiln operators will agree that some of the most severe conditions a refractory must stand occur in the hot zone of a kiln burning Portland cement, dead burn dolomite, magnesite, peri-clase, and similar materials. Frequently the operator is faced with factors beyond his control which drastically shorten the life of refractories. Shutdown due to mechanical failure can be serious if the period is of sufficiently long duration to cause the dropping of coating or the loosening of the lining. A change in slurry can affect the coating and cause ring buildup. A change in type of fuel and its effect upon the flame can cause a shift in location of the hottest zone. Weekend shutdowns or any other interruption can cause the operator trouble and may damage the refractories, since stopping and starting a rotary kiln is certainly more difficult than stopping and starting a motor. Some operators have tried to set an estimate of damage for each shutdown in equivalent days of running time. Conditions affecting the refractory may be roughly grouped in four classes: chemical attack, mechanical stress, thermal shock, and abrasion. Chemical Attack: The drive to obtain maximum production through a kiln demands maximum operating temperatures, temperatures which are limited more by the ringing up or melting of the clinker. This can cause interface temperatures at the junction of coating and refractory which require the use of a basic kiln block to withstand the chemical attack. Chemical changes take place within the refractory itself, especially in chemically bonded or unburned kiln blocks. These changes cause the formation of the ceramic or burned bond. Migrating liquids or fluxes from the kiln charge have an effect within the refractory and lead to mineral or glass formation. The alkalies, sodium and potassium, migrate into the refractory as silicates, chlorides, sulphates or other salts. They may move under capillary action or may be caused to move by volatilization with condensation in the cooler portion. Mechanical Stress: Concentrated stress may be caused by several factors or combinations thereof. I—The rings of refractories must be kept tight and rigid within the kiln, and this alone demands considerable force to hold the blocks in place. So that the force will not be concentrated, the blocks should fit the circle as perfectly as possible, with the faces in contact overall. 2—As the kiln is heated, thermal expansion takes place at the hot end of the kiln block. Since this disturbs the plane face it too can cause a concentrated stress at the two ends of the block, and shearing stress can be set up within the brick itself because of the difference in expansion between the two ends. 3—If a lining becomes loose and moves in the shell very severe stress can be set up, and as the kiln rotates this load changes and gives the effect of repeated loading. Permanent expansion of the refractory can also cause severe loading. 4—Not least important, flexing of the kiln is frequently the cause of concentrated stresses. Thermal Shock: Thermal shock, the result of heating and cooling too rapidly, occurs on starting and stopping or when a large patch of coating drops, exposing the bricks. Again, its destructive effect is often the result of phase change, liquid to solid or the reverse; dense refractories loaded with glass-forming impurities are particularly susceptible. Thermal shock is a. problem with refractories set in the wall or roof of a stationary furnace, and becomes even more serious in a rotary kiln, the tendency to spa11 being magnified with movement and concentration of stress. Uniform rate of feed and loading insures both better coating and a more uniform stress. Abrasion: If the refractories do not take a coating, abrasion can become a most destructive factor. W. L. SaundeRs, New York City (communication to the Secretary*):—Notwithstanding the sweeping statements made by Mr. Clarke in this paper, the friends of compressed air are not dismayed. There is no war between electricity and compressed air. Each one has its field of usefulness, and in that field each is supreme. In spite of commercial interests, in spite of prejudices and the enthusiasm of the inventor, the thing that is best will survive and flourish. At least ten years ago, our engineering papers contained large advertisements and pages of reading-matter about the application of electricity to mines, recording the introduction of numerous rock-drilling plants, and claiming that the problem had been solved, greatly to the advantage of the miner and with promise of large profits to the manufacturers of electrical apparatus. Edison and Thomson labored to apply electricity to mines, and each believed that the probabilities of success were great. This was the period of the solelloid rock-drill, which mas admirably suited, theoretically, to the percussive principle and in the development of which hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent without satisfactory result. I have searched in vain for a standard mining equipment where electric rock-drills are in constant, commercial operation. During a recent trip made from New York to California, I visited most of the important mines of the West and failed to discover a single electric equipment, so far as this class of mining-work is concerned. If any one will inform me where there exists today an electric-drilling equipment in constant service in mines in the United States, I shall be glad to receive the information. The double-porosity model of Warren and Root7 for examining pressure drawdown and buildup phenomena in naturally fractured reservoirs has been extended to intetpret interference test results. Both analytical and numerical solutions are presented. The practicality of some of the assumptions in the Warren-Root model was also investigated. The standard procedure for interpreting interference tests in naturally fractured reservoirs beretofore employed an equivalent homogeneous reservoir model. A comparison of our results with the equivalent homogeneous model indicates the latter is inadequate for early time responses. For late time responses, however, the simpler equivalent homogeneous model yields favorable results. Finally, the effects of well spacing and the magnitude of the interporosity flow parameter are briefly cited. INTRODUCTION Interference tests can be used to provide reservoir information not obtainable from conventional pressure drawdown and buildup tests. The technique involves measuring the response in one or more wells arising from a pressure perturbation introduced into another well. It has been. successfully applied to single-layer, homogeneous, unfractured, isotropic and anisotropic formations to arrive at values of well storage capacity and a measure of directional permeability.l The techniques of interference testing usually can be extended to heterogeneous systems, provided the permeability contrast between any existing rock layers is not excessive.9 In such cases, the practical interference effects in an observation well of an interconnecting heterogeneous reservoir can be predicted using an equivalent homogeneous model. The calculated properties are then average values. Russell and Prats2 have demonstrated the utility of this approach for a single-phase, two-layer system. For naturally fractured reservoirs, some different approaches usually are necessary. The major departure from homogeneous or nearly homogeneous reservoir treatment is to characterize the fractured system as an entity having "double-porosity"; namely, we suppose the existence of both primary and secondary porosity, where the former is contained within a systematic array of identical rectangular matrix blocks and the latter is contained within an orthogonal system of continuous, uniform fractures (see Fig. 1). It is sufficient to assume that the permeability of the rock matrix is so small that movement of reservoir fluids to the producing wells is entirely through the fracture network. This assumption has been validated by Barenblatt3 and .employed by others?-7 Warren and Root7 used the double-porosity model to develop an interpretation of pressure drawdown and pressure buildup tests in naturally fractured

Hematite-magnetite ore bodies at Iron Mountain, Missouri, have produced nearly 9 million tons of iron ore concentrates since 1844. The ore minerals occur principally as open-space filling in fractured and brecciated andesite porphyry with very minor replacement of the wall rocks. The enclosing rocks are Precambrian in age and consist of a series of dacite, rhyolite, and andesite flows aggregating about 2000 feet in thickness. All of the ore is in andesite and the mineralization is Precambrian in age. The shape of the ore bodies, the breccia character of the ore, and the gangue mineralogy are believed to be unique. One of the two main ore bodies is crudely dome-shaped with a tendency for development of concentric mineralized shells; the other is an elongated lense in plan but hook-shaped in cross section. Both have strong linear elements striking northeast, east-west, or northwest. Various modes of origin for the structures and for the tension breccias have been suggested, but none is completely satisfactory. Hematite is the main ore mineral; magnetite is subordinate. Important gangue minerals are andradite, quartz, calcite, actinolite, apatite, epidote, and chlorite. Although some evidence favors injection of an iron-rich melt, other evidence suggests ore formation by a high temperature, water-rich solution.

Laboratory and pilot plant studies showed that supergrade iron ore concentrates (containing less than 2% SiO2) can be made from standard grade magnetic iron ore products by cationic silica flotation. Continuous tests were run using various flowsheet arrangements. whereby (1) super and standard grade products were made simultaneously or (2) only a superconcentrate was produced. After a caustic scrub and desliming pretreatment, the silica in a magnetic taconite concentrate was reduced to 1.8% SiO2 by amine flotation. Approximately 75% of the iron was recovered in the single flotation stage, and by additional beneficiation 95% of the total iron was ultimately recovered,

IT is customary to regard the stress-strain relation as consisting of two parts, the elastic region and the plastic region. The essential attribute of the plastic region is the presence of a permanent set, which remains upon removal of all stresses. The essential attribute of the elastic region is the absence of such a permanent set. Absence of a permanent set does not imply a linear relation between stress and strain, nor even a single valued relation. In fact, in no real metal is stress a single valued function of strain in the elastic region. The property of a solid in virtue of which stress and strain are not uniquely related in the elastic range will be called "anelasticity." The purpose of the present article is to review and correlate the past work upon the anelasticity of metals. The following paper by W. A. West124 describes investigations upon anelastic properties of iron. Many manifestations of anelasticity have been observed, the first as early as 1835 by Weber.1,2 In his experiments Weber subjected a specimen to a constant load (or deformation) for a given time, and then suddenly removed the load. He observed that most of the deformation suddenly disappeared, but that there remained a residual deformation, which disappeared only gradually with time, as is illustrated in Fig. I. The occurrence of a residual deformation which only gradually disappeared, Weber called the elastic after-effect (Elastische Nackwirkung). An extensive review of the early work upon elastic after-effects has been given by Auerbach.3 Another manifestation of anelasticity is the dependence of the elastic constants-e.g., Young's modulus upon the method of measurement. Thus, if dynamic methods are used, the measured value will depend upon the frequency of oscillation. Still another manifestation is dissipation of energy attending vibration, called damping or internal friction. One objective of metallurgical science is the understanding of the plastic and fracture properties of metals in terms of their microstructure. Through such an understanding will come the ability to design microstructure to give the desired mechanical properties. A study of an elasticity will furnish an invaluable aid in the attainment of this objective. Such studies, when properly guided, yield information regarding the relation between stress and strain in the individual components of the microstructure. In order, however, that this type of information may be obtained, it is necessary that the experimental studies of anelasticity be interpreted by the appropriate mathematical analysis. This article, therefore, starts with the mathematical formulation of anelasticity.

This paper describes the development of a generalized integral-Wofile method for the analysis of heat transfer dwing solidification. The method is extremely flexible, and can be applied to a wide range of situations. This flexibility has been achieved by characterizing the solid metal layer in terms of two parameters, and by developing two simultaneous nonlinear differential equations for these parameters in terms of the heat fluxes crossing the boundaries of the solid layer. The use of these equations is illustrated in a series of examples which involve the solidification of pure metals at zero superheat cooling under different conditions. The simplicity with which the method can be extended to treat more complicated jwoblems is illustrated in a further example which involves natwal convection effects in the liquid metal. ThE rate at which molten metal solidifies in an industrial casting process, and the structure of the cast product, are both controlled by the rate at which heat can be removed from the casting. A knowledge of heat transfer rates is thus essential to the control of the process and to the control of the structure and soundness of the final casting. Heat transfer rates during real solidification processes cannot be predicted by formal mathematical techniques, however, because nonlinear boundary conditions are involved. Approximate methods are normally used, and these have included electrical and hydraulic analogue techniques, finite difference methods, and the integral-profile method. Considerable effort has been devoted to the development of the first two techniques, but the integral-profile method has been used very little so far. This is unfortunate because the method is capable of providing relatively accurate solutions for the heat transfer equation during solidification without involving large amounts of computer time. A further advantage of the method is its flexibility, although this is not apparent from the integral-profile solutions that have been developed to date. These solutions have been derived for the solidification of molten metal at zero super-heat under cooling conditions involving either a constant heat flux from the cooled surface;' a constant heat transfer coefficient at the surface,'-3 or a specified variation in the surface temperature.4,5 A generalized integral-profile method is presented in this paper which can be used to predict unidirectional solidification rates under a very wide range of more realistic cooling conditions. The use of the method is illustrated in a series of problems involving pure metals, or skin forming alloys, solidifying at zero super-heat. However, the principal advantage that this method has over the previous integral-profile methods is the ease with which it can be extended to treat more complicated solidification problems. This is illustrated by considering a problem in which super-heat is liberated from the liquid metal by natural convection during the solidification process. In the final section of the paper the generalized method is compared with previous methods used to predict solidification rates and its extension to more complicated solidification problems is briefly discussed.

THOUGH the flotation of gold ores has come into the lime- light largely in recent years, it is not a product of recent economic conditions but rather as old as flotation itself. It could hardly be other- wise, since gold, when in the right state of comminution and surface condition, is one of the more readily floated of minerals. In early practice it was not generally recognized that gold was floated as well; it was - thought that the gold was bound up with sulphide minerals that floated, but now we know that free gold must have been floated as well.

LABOR disputes caused considerable turbulence in the coal mining industry during 1946. As an outcome of these disputes, a definitely fundamental change in safety procedure was instituted: establishment of safety regultions for coal mines through the agency of agreements between the miners' union and the agency or agencies operating the coal mines. Although a temporary plan at present, the future will determine the. extent to which it may become permanent. Notwithstanding the turmoil in the industry extending through much of the year, the safety record for the first eleven months of 1946 was the best in the history of the industry for that period. The fatality rate for 1946 is lower than in any other year in the history of coal mining in the United States. This follows a pattern inasmuch as new low coal-mine fatality records were also made in 1945, 1944, and 1943. The five-year period 1942 to 1946 inclusive has a coal-mining fatality rate far lower than any other five-year period in the history of the industry. It is significant that this period exactly coincides with the operation of Federal coal mine inspection which got under way early in 1942.

Approximately 400 attended the former event, compared with 570 a year ago, and about 250, people were attracted to the dance.

Changes in the ultrasonic attenuation in steel specimens have been observed during tensile tests. Samples of AISI 1020, 1045, and 1095 steel quenched and tempered to a spheroidized condition have been used. Both attenuation and microstrain measurements fail to reveal preyield dislocation motion in the as-tempered specimens. Upon reapplication of the load to samples in the strain-aged condition there is a large preyield attenuation increase but no observable micvostrain up to 90 pct of the flow stress. These and other observed changes can be related to changes in the free disloca-tion density and the average dislocation segment length. The results show that the increase inflow stress in the strain-aged condition is caused by increased fric-tional stresses rather than by dislocation pinning. Strain aging is found to proceed through three distinct stages. The second of these follows the t2,3 law and is characterized by an activation energy of 20 kcal per mole. RECENT years have seen substantial progress in the understanding of the sharp yield-point phenomenon in metals; the influence of solute atom pinning of dislocations, of dislocation multiplication, and of the stress dependence of dislocation velocity on the stress-strain curve has been investigated. Evaluation of the relative importance of these factors in the various metals and alloys is not complete, however, because observation of the stress-strain curve alone is not sufficient to determine the yield mechanism. In the experimental study of the sharp yield point it would be desirable to be able to directly observe the dislocations in a bulk specimen. Ideally, the observations should be made during deformation because of the rapidity of recovery processes in lightly strained metals. While direct observation of dislocations under these conditions is not possible, certain physical properties sensitive to the dislocation structure can be observed while a test specimen is undergoing deformation. Of these properties, one of the most useful is the ultrasonic attenuation. The total observed attenuation, a, is due to a number of causes: acoustic diffraction, scattering by inhomogeneities in the structure, heat flow, magnetostriction, and dislocation damping. Satisfactory measurements of the absolute a are difficult to make because all of these factors cannot be evaluated in any given specimen, but changes in a due to changes in the dislocation contribution alone can be reliably observed by appropriate technique. Because dislocation damping is sensitive to small concentrations of long, free dislocation segments, observation of acoustic attenuation due to dislocations is particularly useful in the study of the early stages of plastic deformation. In the experiments to be described, acoustic-attenuation measurements have been made on steel samples as these were pulled through their yield in tension. While many details of dislocation-damping phenomena in the bee metals remain obscure, the main characteristics of this type of internal friction are established. At low strain amplitudes and at frequencies well below that of dislocation resonance (the conditions of these experiments) the dislocation contribution to a is given by1 where A is the density of freely oscillating dislocation segments, L is the average segment length, B is the damping constant for a moving dislocation, w is the frequency, O is an orientation factor, C is the dislocation line tension, and t is a numerical factor relating average segment length to the distribution of lengths. Because of its fourth-power dependence on L, a is highly sensitive to changes in dislocation free segment length such as might arise from unpinning, recovery, jog formation, or dislocation intersection. The above equation is not valid near the resonant frequency of dislocations, but the segment length in steel is believed to be much too short to cause over-damped resonance near 10 Mc; this will be discussed later. In the present experiments plastic-strain measurements with a sensitivity of 2 x 10-5 were also made during the early stages of loading in order to detect preyield strain.
