"The curtailment of imports of foreign potash during the World War directed attention to the necessity of establishing a domestic source of potash for fertilizer, and considerable study has been given to the subject by Government bureaus, research organizations, and private individuals. These studies have covered all known sources of potash, and among them the extensive greensand deposits of New Jersey in which the potash content is found in the mineral glauconite have been investigated.Several hundred patents have been obtained covering processes for the extraction of potash from siliceous minerals, but up to the present time none have proved successful on a large commercial scale.When the investigation of the potash deposits of Texas was started by the Federal Government, the laboratory study of the drill cores was assigned to the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station at New Brunswick, New Jersey, with the object of ascertaining a possible commercial method of utilization.The purpose of this preliminary study was to investigate existing literature and previous investigations to ascertain the extent and availability of the deposits, the extent of commercial success so far attained in potash extraction, the most promising known methods and by-products obtained from them, probable markets, and possibility of competition with foreign potash, and by a study of these data to determine whether further chemical engineering analysis and laboratory investigation were warranted.As the study advanced it became evident that adequate reserves of green-sand were available for many years supply. and that whereas many processes had been patented few had been tried commercially. "The gently-dipping Devonian dolomite beds south of Great Slave lake in northern Canada are nearly every-where concealed by a cover of glacial drift and muskeg. Nevertheless, in 1898 or earlier, four small outcropping areas of dolomite, richly mineralized with lead and zinc sulphides, were discovered. Exploration work performed here up to the end of 1930, included intensive trenching and drilling of the showings, together with mapping and wide-spaced drilling in the surrounding region. This work proved that the discoveries are isolated pockets of mineralization much too small to be commercially valuable by themselves. No evidence of orebodies elsewhere was reported.Meanwhile, mapping by the G.S.C. in the Shield far to the east disclosed major Precambrian faults, some of which can be projected southwesterly (under a cover of Paleozoic sediments) to the vicinity of Pine Point. During the period from 1940 to 1947, consideration was given, by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company Ltd., to evidence of a theoretical possibility that, although apparently dormant in Paleozoic times, these faults may have provided a structural control and a source of ore-bearing solutions in some post-Devonian period. From this, it was postulated that the breaks might have created, in the overlying dolomite, a linear array of orebodies concealed by overburden but lying in a belt of considerable length and in a position predictable within practical limits. A program of drilling designed to test and exploit this specific concept was conducted from 1948 to 1955.he drilling within the new, theoretically-defined search area resulted in the discovery of many lead-zinc ore-bodies, none of which was exposed at the surface. Some of these are large and (as indicated by 1965 production records) very rich. They are situated 1 to several miles distant from, and apparently not connected to, the earlier-known surface discoveries. The drilling also disclosed that the ore, which consists of disseminated sphalerite and galena replacements together with colloform sphalerite and coarse galena cavity fillings, occurs mainly at certain stratigraphic horizons within a large, coarsely-recrystallized dolomite barrier reef. Considerable fracturing and folding was found. It has been suggested that reef development was influenced by post-Precambrian tectonic movements associated with the old faults in the basement complex. The ore may have been deposited by solutions moving from distant sources to favourable structural and chemical environments in or related to the reef.In more recent exploration performed in the course of preparing for mining production, the rate of ore discovery within the same general geological context has been greatly accelerated by the use of new geophysical techniques and drilling equipment. Reserves of 21.5 million tons, averaging 4 per cent lead and 7.2 per cent zinc, were reported in 1965, and production from open pits at the rate of approximately 248,000 tons of concentrates per year is in progress"

During the World War Leadville was an important producer of manganese and maganiferous ores for then steel industry. Normally, the market for these ores is limited to the requirements of the local steel mill at Pueblo for low-grade ores used in making, basic pig iron containing 1 to 2 percent Mr and spiegoloison containing 20 percent Mn, but during the war and a brief period of postwar readjustment, a good deal of 25- to 40-percent manganese ore qua shipped to in-stern steel-manufacturing centers. Throughout the active life of the camp, manganiferous iron ore carrying a little silver and lead and sometimes as such as 35 percent Mn was chipped to load smelters for flux. The total reordered production is 936,024 tons of metallurgical ore shinned to steel mills and 2,576,514 tons of fluxing ore, much of it of metallurgical grade.

Os aços inoxidáveis duplex possuem uma microestrutura austeno-ferrítica com fração média de cada fase de cerca 50%. A microestrutura duplex é responsável por melhorar as propriedades mecânicas do material. A soldagem destes aços é frequentemente uma operação crítica. O objetivo desse trabalho é analisar a influência do aporte térmico sobre a microestrutura de juntas soldadas do aço duplex SAF2205. As chapas de aço duplex 2205 foram soldadas pelo processo de soldagem GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), variando apenas o aporte térmico. Após essa etapa, as chapas foram cortadas, preparadas para a análise metalográfica, difração de raio X (DRX) e ensaio de microdureza Vickers. As microestruturas do metal base (MB), da zona termicamente afetada (ZTA) e da zona fundida (ZF) foram caracterizadas nesse estudo. Foi verificado que quanto maior o aporte térmico menor a quantidade de ferrita e maior o crescimento de grão da austenita na região fundida. Os ensaios de microdureza mostraram que quanto maior o aporte térmico maior será a ZTA do material.

"Cold bonded briquetting of steel plant by-products has proven to be a viable recycling alternative concerning technology, economy and environment in both the traditional blast furnace route and the direct reduction process. A critical parameter in cold bonded briquettes is the type and amount of binder used during production. The binder material must meet certain quality requirements concerning low and high temperature strength, chemistry and economy. Currently, SSAB Tunnplåt uses ordinary Portland cement (OPC) as binder in their cold bonded briquettes. In order to improve binder quality and possibly decrease OPC dependency, a binder feasibility study has been conducted concerning an internal by-product, ladle slag, as a supplement and/or partial substitute for OPC. Several characterization techniques have been used to study the behaviour of ladle slag, these include: XRD, XRF, SEM, glass content analysis, calorimetric analysis, particle size distribution and thermochemical stability considerations concerning the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 system.IntroductionRecently, a project was initiated at SSAB Tunnplåt AB, in Sweden, which aimed at reducing the amount of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) as hydraulic binder in cold bonded briquettes by partly replacing it with ladle slag. OPC is traditionally used within civil engineering, and widely accepted as a hydraulic binder in a number of different applications. OPC consists of four major crystalline phases, i.e. C3S, C2S, C3A and C4AF. Tricalcium aluminate as well as the ferrite phase in OPC reacts very quickly with water, for this reason gypsum is added to the clinker in order to retard these reactions. The fact that gypsum is present in the system limits the recycling of briquettes to the BOF, since the presence of gypsum during steelmaking results in a significant amount of sulphur emissions. The latter along with the expense that follows, makes it worthwhile to consider alternatives for OPC as binder in cold bonded briquettes."

This report presents the comments of members of the Institute's Sub-committee on Physics of Mine Ventilation on the proposals of a special committee of the Institute of Mining Engineers (London). This report is as follows: THEORY OF MINE VENTILATION Abstract of a report submitted June 16, 1925, to the Council of The Institution of Mining Engineers by a Special Committee Laws of Flow of Aib The law of flow of air in mine galleries is, at present, expressed by two formulas differing slightly in shape but both derived from the original hydraulic formulas of Chezy and others. These formulas are: The Atlcinson Formula.—Pa = KsV2, which in transformation becomes a3 where P = pressure producing flow; K = coefficient of friction; s = surface of the mine galleries; V = velocity of flow; Q = rate of flow; a = area of mine galleries. This formula is especially applicable to mine galleries, but is unwieldy in application, as in many problems we are dealing with changes produced in the same set of airways when K, s, and a are assumed not to change, and the only variables are P and Q. Great uncertainty prevails as to the exact values to be assigned to the coefficient K in different types of airway, as different workers have given widely differing values. This formula assumes: (I) That resistance to flow is independent of the pressure within the gallery. (2) That changes in volume within the limits of pressure ordinarily met with may be neglected. (3) That changes in density and viscosity and mode of flow of the air may be neglected. (4) That the coefficient K is a constant. (5) That P is proportional to the square of the velocity. We cannot find any reliable experimental work leading us to conclude how far these assumptions are justifiable in mining practice. The Bureau of Mines studied airblast from surface mining to assess its damage and annoyance potential, and to determine safe levels and appropriate measurement techniques. Research results obtained from direct measurements of airblast-produced structure responses, damage, and analysis of instrument characteristics were combined with studies of sonic booms and human response to transient overpressures. Safe levels of airblast were found to be 134 dBL (0.1 Hz), 133 dBL (2 Hz), 129 dBL (6 Hz), and 105 dB C-slow. These four air-blast levels and measurement methods are equivalent in terms of structure response, and anyone could be used as a safe-level criterion. Of the four methods, only the 0.1-Hz high-pass linear method accurately measures the total airblast energy present; however, the other three were found to adequately quantify the structure response and also represent techniques that are readily available to industry. Where a single airblast measuring system must he used, the 2-Hz linear peak response is the best overall compromise. The human response and annoyance problem from airblast is probably caused primarily by wall rattling and the resulting secondary noises. Although these will not entirely be precluded by the recommended levels, they are low enough to preclude damage to residential structures and any possible human injury over the long term.

The owners of large infrastructure projects are challenged on how to implement sound engineering and construction contracting strategies that address their prime expectations: a quality job, on time and within budget. With the increasing number of large engineering and construction projects worldwide, owners continue to search for alternative contracting strategies to address their risk, quality, sustainability (operability and performance), schedule, and budget concerns. Coupled with the shortage of resources, delays, political pressures, and other obstacles in procurement and negotiation processes, engineers and contractors are also looking for creative ways to optimize contract packaging strategies for efficient and successful project delivery. This paper compiles an array of decision making criteria and suggests a balanced evaluation, ranking and selection strategy in procurement of both engineering and construction services for large tunneling and other infrastructure projects. A number of owners? general preferences and viewpoints are discussed on large tunnel programs encompassing water and wastewater conveyance systems, pump stations and treatment facility upgrades. Contract packaging strategies and project phasing and segmenting alternatives for preliminary engineering, final design, construction management, and actual construction of facilities are featured for several large water and wastewater infrastructure projects. While the selection (and the relevant selection process and criteria) and performance of service providers, whether for engineering or construction, have profound effects on the outcome of any given project, this paper only examines strategies for con-tract packaging. More specifically, the authors evaluated case studies and developed a range of recommendations for packaging of large water and wastewater infrastructure projects with multiple components.

Mining and metallurgical processing of gold and base metal ores often results in solid wastes and effluents containing high concentrations of arsenic. In addition, arsenic can be released to the atmosphere from gold roasters and base metal smelters. Speciation of arsenic in roaster products, in a stack sample from a copper smelter, in organic soils impacted by smelter emissions, and in an anaerobic effluent treatment system at a smelter site was determined in order to broaden our understanding of the nature and occurrence of arsenic in a wider range of metallurgical wastes. Micro-XANES spectra obtained from iron oxide particles forming in a gold roaster indicate preferential enrichment of As3+ species in maghemite-rich domains and microlayers. In comparison, haematite-rich iron oxide particles are dominated by As5+ species. It appears that maghemite is retarding oxidation of arsenic and its volatilisation during roasting. Arsenic occurs as both As3+ and As5+ species in a stack sample emitted from a Cu smelter, confined to fine-grained secondary product layers accumulated on the surfaces of spherical Cu particles. This is probably resulting from condensation of As species upon cooling following their volatilisation during the combustion process. Soil samples collected at various distances from the Cu smelter are dominated by As5+ species including monomethylarsonic acid and tetramethylarsonium iodide as the organic arsenic species. The presence of reduced As3+ species highlights the importance of organic material influencing the speciation of arsenic and mineralogical transformations taking place within the soil profile. The XANES spectra indicate that arsenic occurs predominantly as aqueous arsenite species in the anaerobic treatment system, contrary to the conventional thinking of As retention by the formation of secondary sulfides.

"The challenges encountered in the design and construction of mines and their process facilities today are becoming more intense and the engineering more competitive. The need to incorporate new techno1ogy to compensate for ever rising costs is always present, but its application in the harsh environment of Northern Canada increasingly requires the inclusion of new proven methods and innovative approaches to arrive at economically attractive projects.This paper deals with the development of the process design for the Cullaton Lake Gold Mine in the Northwest Territories. Particular emphasis is given to the interaction of the imposed construction and testwork schedules, and their effect on certain process decisions.The challenge that faced the project team may be defined by the following factors:1. A schedule which required that metallurgical testing, engineering, and procurement and delivery of all equipment and construction supplies should be complete within a period of ten months.2. Transportation of all personnel, equipment and supplies to the site by airlift, as no road was available or affordable.3. A six week period when transportation to the site was impossible.4. The extremes of temperature beyond the tree line in the Northwest Territories.5. A complete lack of infrastructure in the area."

"This paper describes the development of an innovative effluent treatment process for cyanide and heavy metal removal from tailings wastewaters at Hemlo Gold Mines Inc. Golden Giant operation.The importance of minimizing dissolution of contaminants in the gold leaching circuit is discussed, as well as using recycled water in milling circuits to the fullest extent possible. Finally, a brief description of the role of natural cyanide degradation in the tailings pond is provided.Emphasis is placed on the need for overall water quality management to ensure minimum effluent treatment process costs and complexity while producing excellent quality effluents.1.0 INTRODUCTIONHemlo Gold Mines Inc. owns and operates its Golden Giant Mine located forty kilometres east of Marathon, Ontario. The Golden Giant mine is one of three gold operations exploiting the large gold orebody located in the Hemlo area. The milling facilities include two stage secondary crushing, three stage, closed circuit ball mill grinding with no reagents, thickening, cyanide leaching and carbon in pulp gold recovery unit operations. The average throughput is 3000 tonnes per day of 10 grammes per tonne gold ore. Figure 1.1 shows a schematic flowsheet of the operation."

Prospects a new energy saving method for an efficient destruction of the sturdy and hard materials (rocks, ores, frozen soils, concrete blocks, etc) û the Electric Pulse Discharge (EPD) method of materials destruction for green processing in mining and processing of mineral raw materials are considered.The EPD-technologies give additional possibilities for solving ecological problems at the expense of increase of integrated approach of utilisation of minerals and industrial wastes. The scientific and technical level of executed development of EPD method is sufficient for organisation of design work to develop substantially new equipment. A number of plants have been developed and tested, including plants for processing raw material with minerals of jewels, plants for selection of mica from rocks, and plants for processing the merging of artificial mica.

This bulletin abstracts and reviews essential details of reports on 59 fires in different coal mines in the United States, describes the circumstances of origin and the methods of controlling or extinguishing the fires, and points out the lessons taught. all, the fires caused great damage to property and killed nearly 400 men. The data have been compiled from the records of the Bureau of Mines, which cover most of the major mine accidents in the United States since 1.908. The names of the mines concerned and of the persons connected with the management of those mines have been omitted in accordance with the usual policy of the bureau. The bureau hopes that this bulletin will be of service to all persons interested in lessening the fire hazard at coal mines and to all who may be called on to fight a mine fire.

"INTRODUCTION Mine operators have long realized the importance of providing a satisfactory and dependable means of giving prompt warning to underground mine workers at the occurrence of a mine fire or other threatened disaster.Most underground mines of the Lake Superior district are prepared to inject a stench liquid into the compressed-air system quickly to give such warning. The liquid evaporates quickly and gives off an intense and easily recognizable odor even when present in minute quantities in the mine air. Workers in the mines studied have been fairly generally familiarized with the odor and instructed as to evacuation procedure when the warning odor is detected.In some mines provided throughout with electric lighting, including working faces, a prearranged light-flashing signal is given as a warning supplementary to that received from the stench.In a few mines, workers have been instructed to evacuate the mine immediately in the event the compressed-air supply is cut off, regardless of whether mechanical failure may be involved.Information obtained in observing a number of stench-injection tests is compiled and presented in the hope-that it will serve as an incentive to provide means of making stench injections at mines not now so equipped and for making similar tests at other underground mines, so that in case unsatisfactory results are obtained rectifying adjustments or changes may be made in time. It is further hoped that this paper will bring out the real importance of repeating these tests from time to time, at least once a year on each operating shift, so that in the event of an actual emergency, underground employees will receive a prompt warning."

"In this study, H2SO4 and HCl leaching behaviour of an ore sample containing 1.87% of Ni, obtained from the Karaçam (Eskisehir-Turkey) lateritic deposit that started operation recently was investigated. Acid concentration, temperature and reaction time were investigated as variables by comparative leaching tests and the optimum leaching conditions were selected on teh basis of Ni, Fe, Co and Mg behaviour. For H2SO4 leaching, optimum leach parameters were 95°C, a 12 normal H2SO4 concentration and 90 minutes of reaction time, and under these conditions Ni and Fe dissolutions were 97.6% and 95.4% respectively. On the other hand, 70°C, an 8 normal HCl concentration and a reaction time of 90 minutes were found to be the optimum parameters for HCl leaching, and Ni and Fe dissolutions found were 97.1% and 97.8%, respectively.INTRODUCTION Today, nickel and various nickel compounds are obtained from sulphide and lateritic nickel ores (Moskalyk & Alfantazi, 2002). Even though about 72% of the world's nickel reserves constitute lateritic ores, only about 42% of nickel is produced from these ores. The decrease in production from sulphide deposits, on the other hand, and increases in the use of nickel in the iron and steel, and battery production sectors, and especially the production of nickel cast irons in recent years, have accelerated the importance of making use of lateritic deposits (Luo et. al., 2010; Chang et. al., 2010). In the beneficiation of sulphide nickel ores, mostly pyrometallurgical methods are used. On the other hand, about 39% of lateritic ores are beneficiated by pyrometallurgical, and 61% are beneficiated by hydrometallurgical methods (USGS, 2009). In laterite beneficiation, the ore properties are of significance; that is to say, limonitic ores are eneficiated by high pressure acid leaching or via the Caron process, nontronitic ores are beneficiated by high pressure acid leaching or heat treatment (smelting), and ores containing serpentine by pyrometallurgical methods (Berezowsky, 2004; McDonald & Whittington, 2008a; Dreisinger et. al., 2015)."

The Bureau of Mines developed and tested in the laboratory several innovative techniques for reclaiming used lubricating oil. These processes included percolation through both chemically treated clay and ion-exchange resins, distillation through batch and continuous wiped-wall vacuum apparatus, treatment with solvent extraction systems, and chemical removal of impurities with chelating agents. In each treatment, the criteria of evaluation was oil recovery and reduction of acidic and metallic components. Both vacuum distillation and solvent treatment ranked high in their abilities to remove acidic and metallic components of the used oil with good oil recoveries. A combination of the two techniques gave the best overall results in terms of quality evaluations made by established bench tests. The methods were not ranked according to economic practicablity.

Although secondary-recovery methods have not been applied widely in California, it is apparent that increasing attention and effort must be given to this phase of recovery if the State is to maintain its high rank as a petroleum producer. Steadily increasing demands for petroleum products and decreasing rates of discovery of new oil fields and rapid depletion of existing reserves emphasize the prospect of an adverse situation of supply and demand in the not-far-distant future. If the trend of discoveries becomes more favorable or if more complete economic recovery of the oil in place can be obtained by secondary recovery, this situation can be averted. Not only are these reserves of economic importance to the petroleum industry to meet increasing market demands, but economic reclamation of such reserves is an important conservation measure, which will prolong the productive life of many fields" Accordingly, progressive operators in California are alert to the possibilities of secondary recovery and have done much to implement such operations wherever feasible. Most of the operations are of the pressure-maintenance type} in which the reservoir pressure is maintained or partly maintained by injecting natural gas to increase oil recovery. The possibilities of recovering additional oil from stripper fields by gas drive and water flooding (including water disposal) also are being tested in experimental field projects. Table 1 summarizes gas and water-injection projects in California.
