Russia is one of the largest manufacturers of potash fertilizers in the world. Processing of potash ores basically is carried out by a flotation way. Potash ores of the Verhnekamsky potash deposit contain sylvite (KCl), halite (NaCl) and water insoluble impurity (up to 8 %), presented silicate- carbonate minerals, easily slimed by ore crushing in rod mills. Ore of some deposit sites, developed by ?Uralkali? Co, contains a significant amount of a carnal-lite (KCl.MgCl2.6H2O). Work practice of flotation potash plants has shown, that increase of car-nallite content in ore leads to increase magnesium ion content in a circulated plant brine (saturated salt solution of potassium and sodium chlorides-sylvite brine) and to deterioration of indicators of ore processing. In the Paper we present results of researches of floatability of various size sylvite and influences silicate-carbonate slimes on sylvite flotation in brines with the various magnesium chloride content. It is established, that with increase magnesium chloride content in the brine mainly decreases the flotation of coarse sylvite and amplifies adverse effect of silicate-carbonate slimes on sylvite flotation. In this connection deterioration of potash ore flotation is caused not only decrease sylvite floatability but also strengthening adverse action of water insoluble impurity on potash flotation. It is shown that the application of frothing agents, which render the stronger dispersive action on the colloidal-micellar structures of amine in the salt solution increases the absorption of collector on the sylvite and improves the flotation of sylvite into magnesium the containing salt solutions. The application of an organic depressor to the greatest degree of decreasing the absorption amine on the slimes and to the smallest degree possessing anionic properties proves to be most effective with the flotation carnallite of the containing potassium ores. It is offered the application the frother on a basis of glycol ethers and organic depressor on a basis of urea-formaldehyde resin. Results of industrial tests developed reagent modes for flotation treatment of ores with the raised carnallite content (to 6 %) on ?Uralkali? Co plant have shown that their application has allowed to receive equivalent indicators potash flotations at change of magnesium chloride content in the brine from 0.7 % up to 2.4 % .

Tanzania is a country with a variety of mineral deposits, including metallic minerals, gemstones, mineral fuels, industrial minerals, and critical minerals. This study provides an overview of mining legal framework, mineral occurrence and production, challenges in the mining sector, and government initiatives. The aim is to demonstrate the development of the mining sector in Tanzania and explore the potential for further mining investment in the country. The mineral production data showed generally increasing trends over the years, for example, gold production increased from 42 tonnes in 2018/2019 to around 50 tonnes in 2023/2024. Despite the growth, the mining sector encounters several challenges, including a lack of detailed geological information on mineral deposits, inadequate infrastructures in some remote mining sites, the existence of informal artisanal miners, and mineral smuggling. The Tanzanian government has introduced several initiatives to address these challenges, including carrying out the highresolution airborne geophysical survey to increase geological information in some areas, the formalisation of artisanal and small-scale mining, establishing mineral markets to combat mineral smuggling, and encouraging mineral value addition within the country.

An approach of geological mapping and descriptive criteria has been used to identify hydrothermal eruption breccias, named the Onemana Breccia. These in part mantle a gold bearing fossil hydrothermal system located on the eastern side of the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand. Whilst eruption breccias are documented from active and recent geothermal centres within the Taupo Volcanic Zone and in Northland their recognition at Onemana is the first confirmed discovery for this lithotype within ancient hydrothermal systems of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone. At Onemana the widespread occurrence of silicification, sinters, volcanic lake sediments, eruption breccias and advanced argillic alteration allows classic hot spring epithermal modelling. The geological setting, distribution, lithological characteristics, hydrothermal alteration and trace element geochemistry of the Onemana eruption breccias are described. These breccias are closely comparable with hydrothermal eruption deposits elsewhere, particularly those in active ore forming hydrothermal systems. Consideration is given specifically to the role of the Onemana Breccia in an exploration strategy for discovering epithermal gold-silver deposits.

The objective of this research was to investigate the interaction phenomena of rock and types of rock bolts to develop design principals for using grouted roof bolts. The investigation was to determine the effectiveness of grouted bolts in resisting lateral displacement and axial separation along fracture planes, and also to determine if grouted bolts eliminate the axial tensile stress near the anchor and the resulting rock fracture. The first year's effort involved defining the post-tensioning response of grouted bars and determining the amount of shear resistance generated by conventional and resin-grouted bolts. A finite-element analysis showed that if the rock and resin grout behave in an elastic manner, the post tensioning of a grouted bar will affect mine roof stability only if movement occurs near the collar. An experimental shear test program revealed that both conventional bolts and resin-grouted reinforcing bars significantly increase shear resistance along fracture or bedding plane when the average normal compressive stress on that plane is low (in the order of 25 psi) and when the bolt is oriented so that the shear displacement tends to lengthen the bolt. An increase in shear resistance is also noted at the higher normal pressure of 250 psi; however, the increase is small compared to the corresponding shear resistance without a bolt. Conventional bolts oriented so that they tended to loosen with shear displacement added no significant shear resistance.

Two different techniques were used to make measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise in an operating coal mine, Robena No.4, located near Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. One technique measures noise over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief time periods. With present instrumentation, the spectrum can be covered from 40 Hz to 400 kHz. It is recorded using broad-band analog magnetic tape, and the noise data are later transformed to give spectral plots. The other technique records noise envelopes at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of tine to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and amplitude probability distribution plots. The general results are that at frequencies below 10 kHz, power line noise within the mine is severe. Impulsive noise is severe near arcing trolleys, and at lower frequencies near any transmission line. Carrier trolley phone signals and harmonics are strong throughout the mine whenever the trolley phone is in operation. Additional information beyond that included in this report may be obtained from the authors, who are with the Electromagnetics Division of the National Bureau of Standards.

The bending strength and flexural stiffness of a micropile at its threaded connection is less than its intact strength and may fail due to thread slippage or by fracture through the pin (reduced cross-sectional area of male threads in the threaded zone of the casing). The mode of failure depends on the reduction in cross-section necessary for machining the threads, and details of the threaded connection such as the length of threaded connection, size and shape of threads, and the thread density (threads per inch). Based on data from bending tests conducted on 9-5/8 inch diameter micropile casing, a method has been developed to predict the ultimate moment capacity and initial bending stiffness of round threaded micropile connections. Two modes of failure were observed from four-point bending tests conducted at the University of Illinois on 9-5/8 inch casing with round threads. Threaded micropile casing connections with an effective thread length of 1.35 inches typically failed by slippage at the threads (jump out), while connections using an effective thread length of 1.89 inches failed by fracture of the pin. These two failure modes were described by W.O. Clinedinst in his report to the American Petroleum Institute on tension tests of threaded pipe casing. Clinedinst developed an empirical formula to determine the tensile strength of threaded connections. A method to predict moment capacity for threaded micropile connections by modeling the micropile cross-section and applying Clinedinst?s equation to determine the max tensile stress along the threaded connection while satisfying force equilibrium is proposed. The predicted moment capacity for threaded connections using this approach is within ten percent of measured for both modes of failure observed from the bending tests.

Over the course of Dr. Robertson’s career, the ferrous and non-ferrous plants have seen enormous changes in technology and increases in plant capacity, essentially amounting to a “technological revolution”. In iron and steel, the “mega” blast furnace of some 6,000 m3 working volume is now standard (~10,000 tonnes (mt) of pig iron/day). Similar huge changes in process technology and plant size have occurred in the non-ferrous industry. As an example, the fuelfired reverberatory furnace, once the mainstay of the copper industry, has disappeared - replaced by large capacity flash and bath smelting technologies. The energy consumption per unit mass of metal produced has also been reduced considerably. Our understanding of the thermodynamics and mechanisms of metallurgical reactions, a field to which Dr. Robertson has significantly contributed, has made great strides. This paper reviews these changes with particular reference to the copper smelting industry, providing also comments on expected future trends.

Straw charcoal was used as a novel reductant in the co-reduction roasting of laterite ore and red mud. The influence of the reductant dosages, co-reduction temperature, and co-reduction time were investigated. Results showed that a powdered ferronickel product of 1.81wt.% nickel and 81.40wt.% iron was obtained under straw charcoal dosage of 15wt.% and roasted at 1250 °C for 80 min. The corresponding recovery of nickel and total iron were 97.21wt.% and 98.87wt.%, respectively. The performance of straw charcoal was also compared to that by the conventional coke reductant. Results showed that ferronickel particles using straw charcoal were larger in size than coke, mainly due to the lower S (0.14wt.%) and ash content (3.80wt.%), which could not hinder the agglomeration of the ferronickel grains, and lower melting point that producing liquid phase and promoting ferronickel particles growth. In addition, the gasification reactivity of straw charcoal is better than that of coke, which is beneficial to the iron oxide reduction and the recovery of iron. To conclude, straw charcoal is a promising reductant for the co-reduction of laterite ore and red mud in coal-deficient areas.

Fundamental theoretical models can now be used to make a significant next step towards the development and implementation of computerised models describing real industrial processes—Virtual Reactors, and computer-aided smart-decision-making systems that may be called Pyro-GPS by analogy to GPS; these developments can facilitate knowledge-based improvement and optimisation strategies. The implementation of these improvements require ongoing collaboration between researchers, industry and government.

Porous and permeable rocks deeply buried in sedimentary basins contain immense volumes of hot water with the potential to supply low-grade heat energy. A part of Canada with sizeable potential for low-grade geothermal energy is the northern Williston Basin of southern Saskatchewan. In this region, the University of Regina has conducted a geological study investigating the feasibility of producing large quantities of warm water suitable for space heating in the Regina - Moose Jaw area. The study has shown that the most favourable geothermal reservoirs are in the Basal Clastic Unit (Cambrian Ordovician), which, at an approximate depth of 2,000 metres has predicted temperatures of 71°C to 74°C. We anticipate sustainable flow rates from these reservoirs of 100 to 300 ms/hr. The water contains about 150,000ppm of total dissolved solids, mostly sodium chloride. It is anticipated that the sulphate content will be 3,000 to 6,000 ppm, that the dissolved oxygen and hydrogen sulphide content will be small, and that the waters will be neutral to slightly alkaline. It is anticipated that the piezometric level will be 46 m below the ground surface for reservoirs in the upper part of the Basal Clastic Unit and 141m below the ground surface for the lower reservoirs of the unit. Plans are to build a low-grade geothermal research, testing and demonstration facility at the University of Regina. To be a practical demonstration, the facility will have to handle very large volumes of water. Because of high salinity, the water will be re injected into a subsurface reservoir. We do not anticipate insurmountable problems because of salinities or as a result of corrosion provided that the waters are not aerated during handling

"The number of persons fatally injured in the petroleum industry in California in 1930 was 50, a decrease of 20.6 per cent from 1929, when 63 men accidentally lost their lives. The decrease in the number of fatalities for 1930 has caused the first downward trend in the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry since 1927 and is coincident with a period of little active development in new fields, the shutting in of many wells, and reduced activity in the older fields of the State. That a direct relationship exists between the number of accidental deaths and the rapidity of new field development is particularly emphasized by the fact that in 1929, a year of intensive field development in California, 48 men were killed in the drilling and producing division, whereas in 1930, a year of less development work, only 25 men were killed in this division,The figures for the average number of drilling and producing wells in 1930 decreased appreciably from comparable figures for 1929 and a greater percentage of producing wells were shut—in in 1930 than in 1929."

This report presents the results of a joint Bureau of Mines-U.S. Department of Energy project that evaluated a newly developed low-coal mining system: the 4M miniminer system. The evaluation took place from April through October 1981 and determined potential health, safety, and productivity factors for the mining system using the surface test facilities at Bruceton, PA. The planning, testing, results of testing, and a summary evaluation of the 4M miniminer system are included in the report. The miniminer system was found to be a very good concept with future potential for safe, healthful, and economic production in thin-seam mining. The mining system was also judged to have considerable potential for use in some coal seams that are presently considered unminable by other existing mining equipment. The preproduction, prototype version of the miniminer system that was tested suffered from several safety and production problems. These problems are also described, along with suggested remedies.

The solubility of nitrogen in liquid cobalt and a number of dilute cobalt alloys Was measured in the temperature range 1550" to 1700°C at nitrogen pressures to 1 atm. At 1600°C and 1 atm nitrogen pressure, the solubility in pure cobalt is 0.0047 wt pct [3.8 cu cm (stp) per 100 g Co]. The standard free- energy change for the solution reaction 1/2 N,(g) = gout pct in Co) is iF - 10,000 + 5.24 T cal per g atom N. The alloying elements Cv, Cu, Mo, Nb, Tu, W, and V increase the nitrogen solubility, while Al, Fe, Ni, and Si decrease the nitrogen solubility. THE solubility of nitrogen in cobalt was studied previously by Sieverts, Busch and Dodd,2 and Schenck, Frohberg, and Graf.3 Sieverts investigated the solution below the melting point of cobalt, and Busch and Dodd worked with the liquid metal; however, neither study found any solubility for nitrogen in cobalt. Schenck et al, reported a solubility of 0.005 wt pct N in cobalt at 1600°C. Seagle et al. 4 reported residual nitrogen in cobalt after electron-beam melting, although no reasons were ventured for the presence of this interstitial impurity. This investigation was undertaken to clarify these inconsistencies, and to provide additional data on atomic interactions in dilute metallic solution. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE This study was well-suited to the Sieverts' method, which has not changed significantly since its introduction by Sieverts. 5 The apparatus was of the same design as that described by Humbert and Elliott, 6 with a reaction bulb similar to that reported by Weinstein and Elliott. 7 The buret was not water-jacketed, but the measured gas volumes were corrected for small changes in room temperature. The melt temperature was measured by a disappear ing-filament optical pyrometer sighted through a prism onto the melt surface. Temperature calibration was made based on a measurement of the melting point of pure cobalt taken as 1495°C. The difference between the reciprocal of the observed and the true temperatures was assumed to be a constant, neglecting the changes in emissivity with small additions of alloying elements. The total error in gas-volume measurement caused by accuracy limitations in reading the mercury level in the buret, variation in ambient temperature, and variation in melt temperature was about 0.5 cu cm. This represents approximately 10 pct of the total solubility, and is a larger relative error than in previous studies6-' because of the small nitrogen solubilities encountered in the present investigation. The source and purity of the materials used are listed in Table IA. Recrystallized alumina crucibles were used throughout the investigation. Examination of the crucibles after solidification of the melts showed no reaction or penetration. Alloying of the cobalt melt was accomplished with the dropping technique described by Humbert. 6 The investigation was started using cobalt from African Metals Corp. in shot form, but this material was not of sufficient purity and did not yield consistent solubility results. Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. cobalt was then used throughout the investigation. In experiments involving alloying elements which could react with oxygen dissolved in the melt, the cobalt was further refined by annealing at 1400°C in a dry-hydrogen atmosphere. This treatment, described by Woolley and Pehlke, 8 markedly reduced the oxygen content. The oxygen and nitrogen analyses of the cobalt used in this study are presented in Table IB. RESULTS Hot Volume. The hot volume was measured prior to each run and was 50 to 55 cu cm (stp) at 1600°C. It increased linearly with increasing pressure and decreasing melt temperature. Pure Cobalt. The distribution coefficient, k, of interest in zone refining is generally defined as the ratio of the solid to the liquid solubilities of one element in another at the normal melting point of the solvent. In practice, distribution coefficients are frequently calculated from solubilities at temperatures well below the melting point of the solvent, e.g., at a eutectic temperature. This is done because of the general lack of accurate data on the liquidus and solidus curves in most phase diagrams. The practice is equivalent to assuming that the liquidus and solidus curves are straight lines in the temperature range between the melting point of the solvent and the temperature at which data for the solubilities are known. It is recognized that the k values so derived may be in serious error; we have found evidence in recent zone-refining operations that a case in point is silicon in aluminum. The phase diagram found in the literature for silicon in aluminum indicates a eutectic on the aluminum-rich side at 12.5 at. pct Si and at 577°C,1 and a solid solubility of silicon in aluminum at this temperature of 1.59 pct.2 It also shows the liquidus and solidus as nearly straight lines from 577°C to the melting point of aluminum (660°C)1,2 The k value obtained from this data is 0.13. This is almost exactly the same as the k value (about 0.14)' obtained in a similar way for copper in aluminum. Yet we have found by mass-spectrograph analyses* of three bars of zone-refined aluminum that copper is efficiently removed from aluminum by zone refining but silicon is not. Two of the three bars of aluminum were zone-refined in our laboratories, the other in the laboratories of AIAG Metals, Inc. The former two bars, designated bars PG2 and PG3, were 30 in. long by 1 in. in diameter during refining; each was processed in a high-purity graphite boat* and kept under refining stage of the process consisted of thirty unidirectional zone traverses at rates of about 1 to 2 in. per hr, with a zone length of 1 to 2 in. At approximately the middle of the refining period a 6-in. piece of the impurity-laden finishing end of the bar* was cut off and replaced with new start- ing material. Following refining, the purest 20-in. section of the bar (obtained by discarding approximately 2 in. of the starting end and 8 in. of the finishing end of the bar) was leveled and then analyzed. The AIAG bar was 16 in. long and about 1.2 in. in diameter; it was purified by eight passes of a 2-in. zone at a rate of 1.6 in. per hr, the bar being contained in a sintered alumina boat lined with loose alumina powder of the highest purity. Data for the silicon and copper contents of the three refined bars are given in Table I. Derived data for the efficiencies of the zone-refining operations are listed in Table 11. It is clear from these two tables that the copper is removed much more efficiently—by a factor of 10 to 50 times—from aluminum during zone refining than is silicon. For example, in bar PG3 the thirty zone passes reduced the copper content from 10 to 0.02 ppm, i.e., by 500 times, whereas the same treatment lowered the silicon content by only a factor of about 16. It seem virtually certain, therefore, that the distribution co efficient, k, for silicon in aluminum is well above that for copper and is very likely not much below unity. This also implies that the solidus line on the aluminum-rich side of the A1-Si phase diagram is very probably appreciably curved near the aluminum melting point since the phase-diagram data indicate such curvature is unlikely in the liquidus.

In this paper, geostatistical techniques are applied to forecast the annual copper price in the short and medium terms (from one to five years ahead). These techniques allow the incorporation of monthly and multivariate information in the analysis and provide more accurate results than traditional approaches, especially as far as the one-year forecast is concerned. A second advantage of geostatistics stems from its ability to assess the uncertainty associated with the unknown future prices, thanks to estimation variances or confidence intervals, depending on the technique used. Such an assessment has a crucial importance in decision-making, from both macroeconomic and microeconomic points of view

"Considerable research has been conducted on the anodic oxidation of methanol in fuel cells. The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide in aqueous solutions to form methanol is the same reaction in reverse, i.e. CO2 + 6 H+ + 6 e- ? CH3OH + H2O. The same catalysts and conditions may operate for both reaction directions. This carbon dioxide reduction reaction, however, must be able to compete with the electrochemical reduction of water to form hydrogen gas. Thermodynamically, the reduction of CO2 to form CH3OH is slightly more favorable than the reduction of water. The use of nearly neutral electrolytes rather than acidic electrolytes makes the reduction of CO2 kinetically more favorable. The thermodynamics of various reaction steps are presented. Similarities exist with the electrochemical reduction of CO2 and the green-plant photosynthesis process that converts CO2 to carbohydrates.IntroductionVirtually all of the oxygen in the earth’s atmosphere is of biological origin having been generated by green-plant photosynthesis from water and carbon dioxide [1]. The net reaction can be represented byCO2 + H2O ? O2 + [CH2O] (carbohydrates, etc.) (1)Chlorophyll and enzymes promote this reaction, and the energy required comes from sunlight. The actual photosynthesis process is a complex multistage reaction and requires 469 kJ mol-1 of energy supplied by the sun. Isotope tracer experiments using 18O have shown that both the oxygen atoms in the O2 molecule originate from H2O, whereas oxygen atoms in the carbohydrates come from CO2 [1]. The total amount of water on the earth is split by photosynthesis and reconstituted by respiration and combustion once every 2 million years or so. The photosynthetically generated oxygen gas temporarily enters the atmosphere and is recycled about once every 2000 years [1]. The carbon dioxide is partly recycled in the atmosphere and oceans after an average residence time of 300 years and is partly fixed by precipitation of CaCO3 and other carbonate minerals [1]."
