As part of its program to provide technology for reducing undesirable environmental impacts of mineral processing operations, the Bureau of Mines developed the citrate process for desulfurizing industrial stack gases that contain from 0.1 to 2 vol pet S02. In this regenerable flue gas desulfurization (FGD) process, S02 is absorbed from cleaned and cooled industrial flue gas with a citric acid-sodium citrate solution. The absorbed S02 is subsequently reacted with H2S to precipitate marketable elemental sulfur and regenerate the solution for recycle. Laboratory investigations of process parameters provided information for designing larger scale continuous operations. Information gathered from operation of two pilot plants, one at a copper smelter and one at a lead smelter, confirmed the laboratory results. Data were obtained for design and construction of a commercial-sized demonstration plant at the George F. Weaton Power Station, Monaca, PA. A preliminary operation of the plant was demonstrated, under a cost-sharing Bureau-industry contract. This bulletin describes the citrate process and gives results of the laboratory, pilot plant, and demonstration plant studies, as well as corrosion investigations.

A remote heat-activated stench gas/tracer gas mine alarm system was developed to reduce the time between fire detection and personnel notification. The stench gas/ tracer gas system contains ethyl mercaptan for personnel warning and a fluorocarbon for tracer gas detection by instrumentation. A system was also developed which can be interfaced with multiplex mine phones. In-mine tests were conducted and several systems are presently installed in a hard rock mine.

This paper concerns measurements of low-velocity air currents and investigations on mine ventilation by means of chemical smoke. The chemical smoke used is produced without flame and at ordinary mine temperatures, and therefore presents no ignition hazard in gaseous mines. Mining men who have worked in open-light mines are familiar with the use of tobacco smoke in determining the direction of air travel and approximately measuring low-velocity air currents. The use of chemical smoke is merely a refinement on the use of tobacco smoke and the flameless low-temperature source of chemical smoke has the additional advantage that it can be used in gaseous mines. Ventilation smoke apparatus, Fig I, is a simple device for producing dense white smoke. The apparatus as shown consists of a rubber aspirator bulb which is used to force air through a glass "smoke tube" containing a chemical substance that produces a dense white smoke on contact with air. The apparatus was developed by engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Mines.' It is inexpensive, weighs less than 3 oz, is easily carried in a pocket, and requires no skill to operate. Smoke apparatus is invaluable in practical mine ventilation work for: (I) measuring low-velocity air currents, (2) detecting air leakage, (3) observing airflow characteristics. This paper is written to show the merits of the apparatus, and is based upon findings through its extensive use, during the past six years, in mines operated by the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co. Inc. The Apparatus Certain chemicals, such as stannic chloride (SnCl4) and pyrosulphuric acid (H2S2O7) produce "white smoke" when exposed to air. Stannic chloride gives off vapors which on contact with moist air cause the formation of solid hydrates, of which SnCl4.5H20 is the most important. Pyrosulphuric acid decomposes when exposed to air with the evolution of sulphur trioxide (SO3) fumes, which become white upon contacting moisture in the air. A chemical, such as one of the above, is the active substance in a smoke tube. The glass tubes are hermetically sealed during manufacture, and are made ready for use by merely breaking off the tips at the conveniently located file cuts. When the smoke tube is connected to the aspirator, depressing the aspirator bulb forces air into contact with the chemical, and smoke discharges from the open end of the tube. A white solid (a hydrate if stannic chloride is used, or sulphur trioxide if pyrosulphuric acid is used) may occasionally form a cake in the outlet opening of a smoke tube. The Argentine pyroclastic loess arevulcanogenic deposits, which have their sources in the circumnpacific rim. The object of this work is to realize a de-tailed mineralogical characterization of this sediments, to use it like a geo logic outline which regiters discordance or similarity in them, The sampling zone extend from 714N-4125 to 622W-339S. The descriptions of these sediments was considered like basic, mesobasic or acid rocks. The basic sediments, looking like andesite-basaltic composition, are fill-ing the andean valley. The mesobasic one have a similar composition with a pyro-clastic dacite rock, and have been found in marshy pleistocene sediments in the intermountain valley and in the pampeana prairies. The acid ashed conform rhyoda-cite-rhyolite sediments which form the pampeana loess covers in the prairie.

In this work, structural and electronic properties of smithsonite (ZnCO3) and cerussite (PbCO3) as the typical lead-zinc oxide minerals is simulated by means of DFT. The calculated results could be concluded as: (1) The density of states (DOS) of Zn atom in ZnCO3 is nearer to the Fermi level than that of Pb atom in PbCO3, suggesting that the Zn atom of ZnCO3 is more active and easier to interact with water molecules and hydroxyl ions. Smithsonite, therefore, could be more readily depressed in the flotation process. (2) The bond population value of Zn-O (0.23) and C-O (0.92) in ZnCO3 is obviously larger than that of Pb-O (-0.01) and C-O (0.85) in PbCO3, indicating that the covalent characteristic of ZnCO3 is stronger than that of PbCO3. (3) It is shown that the charge of Pb (+1.32e) in PbCO3 is more positive than that of Zn (+1.22e) in ZnCO3, suggesting that cerussite is easier to interacting with HS- compared with smithsonite in the flotation process. In summary, the structural and electronic property of smithsonite is completely different with cerussite, leading to the difference of their flotation behaviour.

Mining activity in a number of metal ores has been running quite high over the last few years. In particular, those metals that employ acid functional extraction processes such as copper, nickel, cobalt and uranium have been particularly active. The world?s largest nickel mine ? the massive $4.76 billion Ambatovy nickel mine on the African island nation of Madagascar is nearing completion. When it reaches its full production capacity in 2013, the mine will produce 60,000 MT/yr of nickel and 5600 MT/yr of cobalt. Coming on the heels of the Ambatovy project is the Long Harbour Processing Plant in Newfoundland, Canada which will process the ore from Vale?s Voisey Bay mine in Labrador. Voisey?s Bay is expected to generate more than 50,000 MT/yr of nickel ore when it starts up in 2013. Next up will be the Boleo project in Mexico on the Baja peninsula. When commissioned in 2013, the $1.4 Billion Boleo project is expected to produce 60,000 MT/yr copper, 3100 MT/yr cobalt, 36,000 MT/yr zinc and 100,000 ? 250,000 MT/yr manganese carbonate.

The investigations carried on at the fuel-testing plant of the United States Geological Survey at St. Louis in 1904-1907 included tests of the steaming and gas-producing qualities of many coals and of the possibilif3 of their improvement by briquetting, together with washing and coking tests and tests of some of the resulting coke in the cupola. These tests were part of a general inquiry into the manner of utilizing most efficiently each of the coals under investigation. The equipment used in the cupola tests of coke, the manner of conducting the tests, and the essential results have been described in publications of the Geological Survey," and only the more important conclusions to be drawn from the tests are mentioned in the following pages. The tests were made to show the fitness of the cokes for foundry purposes, but an incidentlll result was to show foundry men and the coke producers the advisability of studying the conditions of foundry practice. The present bulletin, published by the Bureau of Mines because the analyzing and testing of fuels have been transferred from the Gilological Survey to the Bureau of Mines, briefly reviews the status of the coke industry, some features of practice in the use of coke in the foundry, the probable happenings of a cupola heat, and the reasons for modifying charging practice so that a particular coke can be used to best advantage.

La influencia de los estudios de adsorción para el beneficio de los minerales, se relaciona con la flotabilidad de las especies minerales, y la perspectiva que se ofrece para el progreso de la metalurgia de concentración. Por ello, el objeto de la investigación se basa en la realización de tales experimentos como búsqueda del dominio de la clase de fenómenos fisico-químicos. Dentro de los métodos usuales de determinación de xantatos por yodo, se buscó hallar la concentración por medio del descenso de la adsorción, para determinar la máxima cantidad de reactivo y encontrar el más adecuado para el mineral. Empero, se reparó que a mayor concentración de colector, se genera mayor adsorción. Asímismo cuando se añade el xantato sobre el mineral con poca agua, la cantidad de reactivo adsorbida es superior, justificándose la ventaja que en procesos industriales significaría acondicionar después del espesamiento. En cuanto a la adsorción de galena oxidada, se observa que mezclando este mineral con un sulfuro de zinc, disminuye la adsorción. Posteriormente se ve cómo la superficie oxidada de la galena, puede alterarse por medio de reactivos, variando el grado de adsorción para los diferentes reactivos colectores de flotación. Finalmente se infiere que la realización de las pruebas pretenden determinar principalmente cuál es el reactivo más adecuado más adecuado para una galena determinada.

Regulatory processes associated with development of major mining operations in Alaska and British columbia were evaluated using specific case studies. Included were one hard rock mine in Alaska (Red Dog Mine), one hard rock mine In British Columbia (Snip Mine), and one offshore gold dredging project in Alaska (WestGold SIMA). Based on a comparison of the three case studies, it became clear that the primary incentives for cost effective permitting are: 1) early and continuing coordination of proposed project plans, designs and schedules with key regulatory agencies and local area residents and 2) development of a sufficient level of baseline information on air quality, water quality, wetlands, endangered species, fish and wildlife, and socia-cultural conditions to support the required permit application. The U.S. permitting process worked in much the same way as the Canadian permitting process. Disincentives of mine permitting include high initial costs for baseline data gathering. However, a relatively high early investment resulted in more efficient permit acquisition and reduced long-term monitoring requirements. A common problem Identified was the inadequate supply of trained agency personnel with the requisite technical and permitting experience. This sometimes resulted in poor decisions and unnecessary changes in project plans and schedules.

"In-pit crushing and conveyor (IPCC) systems have become increasingly popular in the mining industry as an alternative to truck-and-shovel systems. Deciding whether to haul waste rock by truck or IPCC represents an important gap to be investigated in semi-mobile IPCC systems. A cost analysis is presented to evaluate the feasibility of crushing and conveying waste material in IPCC systems, along with sensitivity and risk assessments through Monte Carlo simulation. Although the capital expenditure is higher, results showed waste crushing will be feasible in deep pits and over long mine life and haul distances.RÉSUMÉ La popularité des systèmes de concassage et de transport dans la fosse minière (IPCC, de l’anglais In-pit crushing and conveyor) n’a cessé de croître dans l’industrie minière ; ils constituent en effet une option intéressante de remplacement des systèmes par camions et pelles mécaniques. Le choix entre le transport des stériles par camions ou par IPCC est encore difficile à faire et devra faire l’objet d’une étude approfondie au niveau des systèmes d’IPCC semi-mobiles. Une analyse des coûts est présentée pour évaluer la faisabilité du concassage et du transport des stériles par les systèmes d’IPCC, de même que des évaluations de la sensibilité et des risques par le biais de la simulation de Monte Carlo. Si les dépenses en immobilisations s’avèrent être plus élevées, les résultats ont cependant montré que le concassage des stériles sera envisageable dans des fosses profondes ainsi que sur une longue durée de vie et de longues distances de transport. INTRODUCTIONThe mining industry is currently facing many challenges such as low commodity prices, increasing environmental concerns and regulations, lower grades, deeper mines, and greater waste-rock quantities. As a result, the profitability of mining operations has decreased, with many mines stopping or suspending operations, and many new projects being postponed. Mining companies have therefore focused on improvements and innovations to increase the cost effectiveness of operations, for example, increasing production capacity to take advantage of the economies of scale (Crowson, 2003) and decreasing the unit operation cost. Changes in production capacity force mining companies to evaluate alternative material handling systems.During the past few decades and within material handling systems, significant improvements have been made to truck performance and capacity. Consequently, operating expenditures (OPEX) associated with fuel and maintenance have risen swiftly. In a mining operation, truck hauling systems now represent 40–50% of the capital cost and approximately 45% of the OPEX (Tutton & Streck, 2009). Additionally, material transportation costs are expected to increase due to longer haul distances arising from deeper and larger mines (Fleet et al., 2015). Finally, large fluctuations in fuel prices result in high risks associated with truck OPEX. According to the United States Energy Information Administration (2015), the cost of crude oil—the largest component of the retail price of diesel fuel—increased from US$24.31/barrel in 1986 to US$46.92/barrel in 2016, peaking at US$151.72/barrel in 2008 (Macrotrends, 2016)."

These data are presented in tabular form under the following headings: General Injury Experience Tables 1 to 6: Current data on number of injuries, degree of injury, frequency and severity rates, average severity, and related employment and production data by work location.

The development by the U. S. Bureau of Mines of a process for purifying manganese by electrolysis has stimulated interest in manganese alloys. While recent publications have shown some alloys of manganese and copper to possess rather unusual properties, none have included information on tensile properties, which have an important bearing on the usefulness of the alloys. Manganese-copper alloys can be heat-treated, since the single phases that exist at high temperatures may be retained by quenching. According to Persson,1 when quenched alloys containing from about 30 to nearly IOO per cent manganese are reheated, alpha manganese is precipitated (Fig. I). Calculations based on Persson's X-ray data indicate that this decomposi-tion is accompanied by a change in volume of as much as ; per cent. The reason that this large volume change has not been noted probably is the slow rate at which equilibrium is reached by these alloys. In an investigation on hardening by cold-work and heat-treatment, Dean and Anderson3 found that quenched alloys increase in hardness with manganese content and that high-manganese alloys harden very slowly with cold-work, while high-copper alloys harden much more rapidly. Heat-treatment has little effect on manganese-copper alloys containing less than 40 per cent Mn, and affects those alloys containing more than 40 per cent in accordance with their manganese content and heat-treating temperature. Dean and Anderson4 also found that cold-work increased electrical resistance of alloys containing from 50 to 80 per cent Mn, and that heat-treatment of alloys containing from 40 to 96 per cent Mn altered the electrical resistance considerably. Dean, Anderson and Potter6 have shown that the high vibration damping capacity that characterizes manganese-copper alloys containing 40 to go per cent Mn is affected by cold-work and heat-treatments. Highest vibration damping capacity at low stresses was obtained by heating for 2 hr. at 450°C. (842°F.) after quenching from solution temperatures. Preparalion of Alloys.—The alloys for these tests were melted in a 17-lb. basic-lined high-frequency induction furnace using electrolytic manganese, grade A ingot copper and a 70-30 CU-Mn master alloy (69.80 per cent Cu, 0.12 Fe, 0.04 Si, 0.006 S, 0.07 C, balance Mn). The manganese was heated slowly to expel excess dissolved gases and melted before the addition of copper. No fluxes or covers were used. The melts were cast in tapered iron molds and the ingots were reduced go per cent when forged to 1/2-in. rounds. Rare earth elements are essential for modern life products and green technologies. Recent supply constraints have boosted the development of rare earth projects after the price peak of 2011. The feasibility of a project depends on the definition of a processing route, which in turn depends primarily on the rare earth mineral, with monazite and bastnaesite representing the two most relevant minerals. Monazite-type ores usually contain high acid consumption impurities, such as iron, aluminum, calcium, magnesium, and phosphates, and may also contain prohibitive levels of radioactive thorium in its composition. This work presents a thermodynamic analysis of a monazite system and discusses the fundamentals of a selective process route for rare earth extraction from monazite ores with high iron content. This process involves sulfation by means of concentrated sulfuric acid and roasting at a high temperature. The route yields high rare earth extraction with low iron and thorium extractions and low acid consumption. Rare earth extractions as high as 80% were achieved, while iron and thorium extractions were lower than 1%, and acid consumption was lower than 0.34 kg of sulfuric acid per kg of ore. The operational window was compared to the one predicted by thermodynamic modeling, with 700 °C representing the optimal roasting temperature

A two-dimensional finite element program has been modified and extended to account for some of the rock mechanics complexities associated with single entry development of longwall coal mine panels. Program capability includes arbitrary assignment of element properties without regard to element ordering, anisotropic elastic, plastic and brittle rock properties that may be time dependent (aging), arbitrary mining sequences and provision for the effects of artificial support on the adjacent strata. Failure is according to an extended von Mises criterion that may be linear or quadratic in form; flow rules are obtained from the yield function taken as the plastic potential, but brittle behavior is treated as a discontinuous process of material properties change with deformation. In either case the extent of failure is calculated from the external boundary conditions. Application of the program to essentially two-dimensional problems resulted in lose agreement between calculated displacements and field measurements in the double entry system. Bleeder entries were stable in one locality and not in another. Artificial support had little influence on stability.

What will this deal do to the company’s stock price? This question arises when a publicly traded mining company is presented with a new mine project, or business combination. The standard tool for addressing this question is to use discounted cash flow analysis, or net asset value(NAV), which is discounted cash flow net of liabilities. Cash flow-based analysis is invaluable for assessing project costs and other impacts on debt service capacity and internal rates of return. But cash flow analysis and NAV do not work very well for stock price analysis.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted an overcore stress measurement on the 5300 level of the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID, to investigate the stress regime around an experimental stope in a rock-burst-prone mine. The result indicated a stress field with unexpected magnitude and orientation [s 1 ?135 MPa (19,600 psi) oriented S 80° W). An unusual amount of rock-burst activity was encountered during subsequent excavation. A careful review of the overcore data suggested the overcore strain measurements were valid. Moreover, concentrated rock-burst activity suggested that the measured stress field did exist, but was localized and therefore did not represent the far-field in situ stress field.

The Bureau of Mines Helium Activity has developed a computer program for use in the reduction of pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) data obtained with a Burnett compressibility apparatus. This program includes important modifications and extensions of some of the methods currently used for treating these types of data and yields statistical information that cannot be obtained from any other published work. The methods of calculation make use of a general nonlinear least-squares technique developed at the Helium Research Center. Because of a need to investigate different functional forms for representing the compressibility factor isotherm, 2, the computer program has been written in such a way that the only additional coding required is the so-called compressibility function subroutine. This subroutine defines the analytical form of Z and certain of its partial derivatives. The program described herein is believed to be the most advantageous for use in treating isothermal Burnett compressibility data.

INTRODUCTION For various reasons I have not specified the locality where the research indicated in the following pages was undertaken. It will suffice to say that it was on the grounds of a villa once remote from, but now completely surrounded by, its neighboring city, and in close proximity to an industrial establishment of great extent and importance manufacturing many kinds of steel articles and employing upwards of thirty chimney-stacks for power and process work. The problem was to discover the cause or causes of the mortality to trees and plants on the place, and to trace these causes to their origin. Before undertaking this experimental work, the bibliography accompanying this paper was compiled and studied. It appears from an examination of the careful scientific work performed by the ablest French, German, and English chemists during the last 25 years that they are unanimous in assigning the principal-in fact, the overwhelmingly predominant-cause of the destruction of vegetation to sulphur oxides, resulting either from direct- oxidation of sulphur in oil of vitriol works, etc., or from the oxidation of the sulphur from the minerals associated with commercial coal. Schröder and Schertel showed in 1884 that the sulphates deposited upon the leaves are not injurious to the plants; and Freytag proved that free sulphuric acid could not be found
